chapter 1 / the unknown journey refracts

Zack fills the place a door would be, wiping at a cold-splashed face. Cloud can hear the scrape of stubble on his fingertips. Can see the exhaustion in the slump of his shoulders, this last job’s long travel and labor in the red knuckles, the dirty fingernails, Zack livens to see him awake, like he does not want Cloud to know he is still a human and can still be tired. He has always been this way. A smile plucks at his mouth, folds the highest part of the scar on his cheek into a dimple. Cloud inclines his chin. It’s like waving, except if he were really going to wave, he’d have to take his hand off Aerith. The morning is shedding its bruises, falling in a slant through the open balcony window. At the bedside, Zack leans down. Whiff of dog tag, cologne, sweat, leather, that lovers’ place behind the shell of the ear. They kiss Aerith good morning together.
