Happy International Women’s Day, everyone! In honor of the day, we here at BtT are excited to celebrate some of our favorite women working in anime, manga, and light novels.
This is our second year marking the holiday in this way. When I started this project last year, I was under the impression that these industries were still pretty much a man’s game, with just a handful of women managing to rise to prominent roles. That’s the stereotype, right? And it’s true that these industries are not exactly winning any awards for basic things like representation, pay equity, or support for parental leave or childcare provision. The industry has a long way to go before these kinds of things become the standard. (Which is partly why studios like KyoAni stand out so much for how they flourish in these vital areas! Check out last year’s post for more on this!)
But you know what I’ve learned in the year since the inaugural IWD post? There are actually a lot of women in key roles, leading the creation and production of our favorite works of anime, manga and light novels. A LOT! We just don’t realize who they are. That’s why we’re excited to continue this series today, so that we at BtT can do our bit to shine a little light on these wonderful creatives and honor the hard work they’ve done for our entertainment and edification!
So here is a celebration of a few more women who, like last year’s line-up, have touched our hearts, tickled our funny bones, and dazzled our eyes with their work, and who have each, in her own way, made our lives just that little bit richer.

Toradora!: An Anime Review
Toradora!: An Anime Review
Appearances can be deceiving. That is a saying that we all hear from a young age. Most likely because it is a universal truth. It also is a truth that we forget. We make snap judgements about people based on how they look every day. The real shame of that is how much we miss out on. How many fascinating people do we miss out on knowing? One anime that really explores how layered people are is…

Author: Yuyuko Takemiya
Illustrator: Yasu
Label: Dengeki Bunko
Release Date: 10 August 2008
My Score: 4/5
English Release: Seven Seas Entertainment has published this series in English so please check it out if you are interested in the series.
Ryuuji is nursing his heartbreak after getting rejected by Minori at the end of last volume, Taiga plans to keep her distance because she is positive that Minori likes Ryuuji back and thinks that she is the reason Minori rejected him. Meanwhile, the upcoming school trip is changed from a beach resort to a ski trip at the last minute due to a hotel mix-up.
This volume is really interesting, as usual, but, again, I’ve already seen the anime so there’s not much that the light novel can add to the experience so I don’t want to rate this volume a full 5/5. I did really like seeing Ryuuji be comfortable talking with his friends because it’s such a nice contrast to what he was like at the start of the series where he was shunned due to his looks and didn’t have much confidence and I do think that this is a very well-written drama series. Like, this really isn’t my preferred genre but I’m still reading and enjoying it 8 volumes in so that’s quite impressive.
Adaptation Notes:
This volume is adapted in episodes 20 & 21 in the anime. The anime shortens a couple of scenes but it’s overall very faithful to the light novel. I really like the way that the anime does the fight scene between Ami and Minori. It’s very bloody and messy and very different from the kind of fights that you would usually see in this genre and it’s memorable and the same is true of the fight scene between Sumire and Taiga a couple of volumes ago.
I’ll be reading volume 9 soon.

maX’s Toradora: Episode 4 Review
This is probably the best episode so far, and in this episode, Taiga was probably at her funniest. She was already established a tiny ball condensed with raging hormones and insecurities, but this episode gave us a chance to see that in a different way. Not only does Taiga pout and lash out, but she also fumbles around and gets all giddy.
We also finally get introduced to Ami Kawashima from the intro. From what I've seen of her in this episode, I hope I will come to either like her, or dislike her in a way that I like. You know, like one of those character you "love to hate". Speaking of liking people, I found Kitamura surprising this episode for two reasons, one of which is that he's apparently popular with the girls. I would have never thought that of him, but it's cool that they're portraying a nerdy-looking character as popular. The other surprise, of course, is the big revelation of this episode, and I like both surprises.
I give this this episode a 4 out of 5.
