Monthly Fandom Faves: January 2023 (HP Edition)
I miss reccing and want to get back into it this year, but without the pressure I put on myself when I adhere to specific themes or categories. I'm going to experiment with unthemed recs of a few things I loved each month instead as a way to keep this lowkey and fun for myself. I'll do separate posts for each fandom so they're more useful for the rest of you. I've got Wolfstar and Jily fics for you in this first one for HP :)

Remus Lupin is a Welsh figure skater who hasn't quite been able to find his rhythm. Until world renowned Russian figure skater (and Remus' celebrity crush) Sirius Black shows up to coach him.
Imagine Yuri! On Ice, make it Wolfstar, and take away any need to appease television censors. That is this fic. (No previous YOI knowledge required.) Our resident queen of sexual tension has done it again. Maybe I'm biased because I had the honor to serve as Molly's technical beta for the figure skating specifics, but this fic is a romp from start to finish. Prepare yourself for some secondhand embarrassment, a need to scream at Remus Lupin for his obliviousness, and an overwhelming urge to give poor Sirius a hug when he's just out here trying his best to win over his crush. Pete is all of us with his complete exasperation with these two, and his snarky commentary is honestly my favorite part of the fic.
Pete held his hands up in surrender. “That’s the last I’ll say about it.”
“Thank you,” Remus exhaled heavily.
“Unless you need to gush about how hot he is.”
“Oh, I absolutely will need to do that.”
“But I will definitely not mention if he gushes about how hot you are.”
“Well, he won’t, but if he does, then, okay, I mean, you should tell me about that.”

Five times Lily walked away and one time she stayed. Canon compliant.
Jackie wrote this way back in October and gifted it to me, and I only just left a real comment on it this month because I'm the worst. It made me so happy to revisit it again though, because it's a melancholy, nuanced portrayal of Lily and her experience coming of age as a Muggleborn—of being of two worlds but belonging in neither. Jackie has a gift for saying a lot with very few words, and this story exemplifies that. Each cleverly chosen vignette is a bruising portrait of the character I've sought out in fanfiction from the very beginning—more than 15 years ago—and it's such an honor that she thought of me when writing this little beauty for MCD fest.
She should have turned around to give them one last wave.
Had they known that she hadn’t wanted to leave them behind—any of them?
She just hadn’t known how to bring them along.

I interpreted this not necessarily as my favorites so much as... kind of a where to start? Picking my favorites of my own works would have been way too hard. So this is more of a sampler platter, haha :P
1. The Opposite Of
This is my magnum opus, probably? 40k words dropped all at once in a single chapter. It’s an AU where Boyd follows Raylan out of Harlan and they build a life together. This fic was such a joy to write, and the justies have been such tremendous supporters. I loved the whole process of figuring out what exactly gets Boyd out of Harlan and then what changes and what stays the same. I loved making it a sorta-fusion with Vice Principals, and I loved that I was able to be introduced to the Bingo Boards this way! This fic wouldn’t have been nearly as hot or as horny without them.
2. Two Drakes in a Pond
This is the fic that had such a higher audience response than I had expected! I really was proud of this one, so that it was so loved makes me so happy! This is the hallmark of my tag “1989,” which is what I’ve started using for all of that year of Raylan and Boyd. It’s the fic that really helped shape those two as characters at that age.
3. Cherry Compote
Cannibalism! Yandere obsession! Mutually unhinged behavior! Truly, a representative tasting plate of all my favorite tropes. It’s number five in the series, so it’s reasonably the climax of the growing story. I have a lot of different tones and stories and tropes in my library, but this one is the one most people think of when they think “Willow” haha :D
4. Like an Incendiary Device
OKAY. SO. MY RAYLAN/ZACHARIAH FIC. This fic is wild to me for so many reasons. It’s a fic I wouldn’t have likely read, if I hadn’t written it myself. It’s a fic that I wrote exclusively in a beach chair while I was on vacation. It gripped my brain and wouldn’t let me go until I posted it. I sent it to tooks immediately, because tooks is the best bird on the internet. It’s a vehicle for RaylanBoyd angst and Willa headcanons.
5. Remembered What I Never Knew
A rare entry in my works of something close to canon. Honestly, this fic has such a special place in my heart, because it is one of the two fics I wrote for Harlan Roulette Remix, which was the first fandom event I’ve ever hosted. I was so lucky to get to write for both Thorn and emdop. I chose this one, because I had always wanted to write an amnesia fics, since it’s one of my favorite tropes, and Thorn’s fic was such an amazing fic in the first place. (I’m going to also fudge the rules and also link 5b. Something in Your Voice Tells Me We’ve Only Just Begun teehee).

Oh god, it's been ages since I've done one of these. I have about a dozen WIPs at the moment (at least one in every fandom I'm in, haha) and it's quite overwhelming to think about. But this last week or two, I wrote a lot of words for the third chapter of a YOI fic that still needs a title before I can start posting ☺️

So...this story originally began as an entry I wrote for the @smquickies2022 event a few months ago. The challenge was to write a sexy fic in a thousand words or less, which I managed to do...but I wasn’t particularly fond of the result, to be honest. The entry ended up focusing almost entirely on the sex to the exclusion of everything else, so I decided to expand the story for Smutember using the Day 16 prompt of “Something New” for the original @smutember event. It can also fit under the Week 3 prompts of “First Times” and “Friends With Benefits” of Sailor Moon Smutember, hosted by @floraone. (It wasn’t Setsuna’s first threesome, but it was Usagi’s and Mamoru’s.)
Anyway, I’ve also included the original smquickies entry (Theme: Lace) as a bonus chapter for posterity, but there’s really no reason to read it if you’ve already read this chapter...unless you really are just interested in reading the smut part. In that case...have fun!

Steve and Ghost head to Mexico to try and escape the memories of New Orleans for a little longer but end up in yet more trouble.
2. Waiting for Euphoria (Yuri!!! On Ice, Victuuri, 66.2k, rated Mature)
Yuuri Katsuki and his flatmate Phichit Chulanont are broke ex-students who are facing the retail hell of the holidays while trying to break into the competitive arenas of entertainment. After a mistake with a Wanted advert, Yuuri ends up auditioning for a style of dance that is most certainly not ballet and as it turns out...he's kinda good at it! However, trying to keep his night-work separate from the rest of his life becomes a damn near impossible task when the Mr. Perfect who comes to his store regularly starts showing up at the club and seems to take a shine to his stage persona!
3. Fearfully Longing (Yu-Gi-Oh!, Thief Queen Bakura/Isis Ishtar, 32.6k, rated Explicit)
In Ancient Egypt as the thief Bakura attacks with intent to steal the millennium items, she is distracted by the Priestess Isis and the two develop an interesting relationship. But what will happen when push comes to shove? (Started as a PWP, turned into a story)

YOU DID GOOD, KID!!! I'm honored to be your first ask, so lets get into it bc I made you wait long enough for this...
Ah Yuri Plisetsky… Yurio... my son… my boy… lets see, shall we…
1. My first impression of them
I knew about Yurio long before I even started watching YOI because I had fallen down the pipeline of “gnc long-haired blond anime characters with bangs” which started with Howl and, more importantly, Mello. And if I associate you with Mello you win.
As for when I actually started the show, (thx grace) once I saw the scene where Yurio is yelling at Yuuri in the bathroom early in ep 1, I knew he would be an interesting character. Once he was running from the Yuuri-on-a-hug-rampage later that’s the exact moment I knew this lil ball of anger needed to be protected at all costs.
2. When I think I truly started to like them
Because of the previous answer, lets just say I knew I was gonna like him right from the get go.
3. A song that reminds me of them
I have a couple for this but don’t read into them because BOTH were song recs from an AMAZING Otayuri fic I read half a year ago. Aynalayin is my fav of the two.
8. Your favorite outfit of them
WTTM – the classic, hands down, no questions asked
10. Describe the character in one sentence
A tiny but powerful blond skating prodigy that works himself to the bone all because he wants acknowledgement from his lifelong idol… and because he gets to wear “knife shoes”
23. Future Headcannon
I think Yurio is destined to have a long successful career that surpasses Viktor for sure. I like to think that its an injury that does him in. Only because I do not think Yuri would ever leave the ice willingly. But it happens when he officially becomes the oldest skater to ever win worlds. Oh and he’s the first to land a quad axel in competition… ever.
27. If they could meet a character from another show/movie/etc. who would be the most fun for them to meet?
Hmm…
Ok hear me out… I don’t know if HE would want this, but I really think it would be funny for him to meet Atsushi from Bungo Stray Dogs. A boy who can turn into a TIGER!?! I mean COME ON!!! Also because their personalities are so different I feel like that would be MAD entertaining.

Happy new year!
What's something new that you tried in a fic this year? How did it turn out and would you do it again?
I wasn't sure what to say here bc the things that came to mind weren't actually *new* this year, just something I'd improved on. But I did actually think of something!
I used an AO3 work skin & some super helpful tutorials to create a fictional tumblr dashboard for Unconventional Fanworks Ex! I liked how it turned out, and I might do it again in the future? It can definitely be used effectively even if it's not something that I'd want to use all the time. I just read a Yuri on Ice fic recently that used this format to great effect!

30. What's something you want to write in 2024?
I'm sure 2024 will be a lot like 2023 in that most of what I'll write will be for other people as part of exchanges. That's just how I manage to actually get things posted lol. And because of the way that works, I have no way of knowing what I might write this year! Which is kinda fun honestly!
But also, I do have a few specific things I'm looking forward to writing in the near future. (Aside from surprise plot bunnies and old drafts that may or may not be dusted off.)
1) Three Sentence Ficathon! This is one of my favorite events all year, I'm so excited that it starts up again this month! Also they're on tumblr now and y'all should check them out @three-sentence-ficathon
2) This post that I didn't plan on writing but I keep thinking about again since I've been watching Season 2 of TGCF... It still might not happen, but I've been thinking about it lol
3) Another Lang Qianqiu & Xie Lian canon-divergent plotbunny
4) Hualian Soulmate Fic
Those are the first things that come to mind! All TGCF, but I am sure I'll write a bunch of other fandoms as well!
