Yuri Isekai 'The Executioner and Her Way of Life' Audiobook Announced

On Saturday, Yen Press announced at its Anime Expo panel that it is producing an audiobook adaptation of Mato Sato's Yuri isekai light novel series The Executioner and Her Way of Life. Yen Audio, Yen Press' imprint from audiobooks, will release the first volume in December 2023.

Yen Press describes the series:

The Lost Ones are wanderers who come here from a distant world known as “Japan.” No one knows how or why they leave their homes. The only thing that is certain is that they bring disaster and calamity. The duty of exterminating them without remorse falls to Menou, a young Executioner. When she meets Akari, it seems like just another job…until she discovers it’s impossible to kill this girl! And when Menou begins to search for a way to defeat this immortality, Akari is more than happy to tag along! So begins a journey that will change Menou forever…

Eight volumes of the original light novels, which are illustrated by Nilitsu, are published by SB Creative's GA Bunko label in Japan. The series received praise for its play on isekai settings and tropes and its inclusion of Yuri elements, which was a relatively uncommon choice when the series first debuted in 2019.

A manga adaptation illustrated by Ryo Mitsuya began serialization in Young Gangan in 2020. Square Enix publishes five collective volumes of the manga in Japanese.

Yen Press licensed both the light novel and manga adaptations of The Executioner and Her Way of Life in English, publishing six volumes of the light novel and two of the manga as of the time of writing.

A television anime adaptation of the series aired from April until June of 2022. It is directed by Yoshiki Kawasaki at J.C. Staff and is licensed in English by Sentai Filmworks. The series is available to stream with English subtitles and dubbing on HIDIVE.

Well with that whole 1519 European man having encountered something resembling 'Hikaru's insides and also that Nounuki-sama might not be what we think it is, time to reveal my theory that there’s actually a ton of ‘Unukis’ around the world.

I think the Unuki as we know it is a piece of the world’s immune system. That when too many impurities are in one area or there’s a tear in the membrane allowing a spill-over, an Unuki develops/is made somehow to halt the infection and consume the impurities. That’s why ‘Hikaru’ is able to destroy them when normally they can’t be; it’s his whole purpose, and he has other mechanisms in under to draw impurities to him to make them easier to consume.

As we know, before Unuki worship, there was plague and famine in the village which caused a lot of deaths, and Kegare is created by contact with death, disease, childbirth, and menstruation... for some reason. Anyway, that’d explain why there’s just so many here and why something needed to come in to clean it all up.

(the true secret of the abortion pills. if you're not pregnant, you're menstruating, which means more Kegare. maybe they were relevant....)

This may also be why ‘Hikaru’ wants to eat Yoshiki’s soul so badly; he’s reading as an impurity (proven by the fact he’s being rejected by a barrier made to keep them out), and so ‘Hikaru’ wants to take him in and destroy him. ‘Hikaru’ may see him as ‘warm’ but it’s probably in the same way a meal is warm and filling— that’s his food, that’s what he wants to eat.

Only thing I don’t really understand is wish granting, but we only have two instances on record of the Unuki granting wishes, one in a storybook and the Hichi wish. All the rest never got granted no matter how many offerings they brought. However, at the same time, wish granting doesn’t seem specific to the Unuki; Kurebayashi’s husband was able to make Iori’s pokemon stronger so unless he had a GameShark in that closet, there’s something more going on.

Yeah, so I think the Nounuki is just a natural part of the world, kind of meant to keep the supernatural and mundane apart. The special thing about 'Hikaru' is that he's what he is now, not that he was once Nounuki-sama.

Will admit these might just all be inspirations for the Nounuki, and he's still Hell itself, but eh- I like it when things that appeared unexplainable at first turn out to be perfectly natural. what can I say lol? And like when you think of the world as a body and every living thing inside it as a cell, it makes even more sense how impurities infect things. It's not that they're lonely- they need hosts, but also cause those hosts to die. Those tears in the membrane are no different than tears in the skin, opening the body to outside pathogens. Makes you wonder what's naturally fixes them; it can't just be on people like Kurebayashi.

HIDE Inspiration Talk 50 (# 19 - 20) - Translation

Demo Tape

When I was still in my indie days myself, I collected demo tapes of Japanese indie bands. From Osaka’s Veil, to Anthem [metal band, founded 1981, disbanded during the 90 but reunited and is still active] to Sabbrabels [metal band, 1980 – 87, reunited in 2015 and again in 2019, still active], and also a lot of punk bands. I loved indie-tapes. There was an event called Music Seminar in New York where several bands were playing music at a livehouse for 24 hours, and having only just debuted, we went there as well. At that time, there was a really cool band, and I wanted their tape at all cost, so I went to their dressing room and managed to get it. Now, come to think of it, that band had been Biohazard [Punk/Metal band from New York, 1987 – 2005], when they were still completely unknown. I remember how there was no one else coming for them. But, I never made any demo tapes myself. Saver Tiger didn’t make any, nor did X after I joined. I collected tapes like that, but I didn’t create any.

Christmas

Christmas is a merry time when people want to be merry all over the world. My ideal Christmas comes with a meticulously planned date.
