One thing I do when porting or composing music is to hide the PSG channels since I'd rather the FM take precedence, here's what this song sounds like when split between FM, PSG and the DAC & Noise tracks:
In my works, PSG is most useful for normalizing channel panning, since the YM2612 can only do full panning, no partials! It can also work as a good echo.
Sound Effects are also a big factoid so to avoid sudden stops in music channels, redundancy is necessary. In other words : despite the fact we have 5/6 FM and 2/3 PSG channels, in reality we only have about 3-4 channel polyphony.

Puyo Puyo Chronicle - Quest of Puyo Puyo for Game Gear (YM2612 + SN76489)
youtube
First post on Tumblr - I've uploaded a lot more stuff before this, so if you're interested, why not check it out? By the way, I don't just do music stuff. I have some plans regarding Puyo Puyo/Madou Monogatari book translations, so keep an eye out for that, wink wink nudge nudge.

You know what really grinds me to a stop when watching gameplay?
People still using old versions of Gens in this day and age I know what you're thinking : how can that possibly be a-
NO, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND
KEGA Fusion:
Old versions of Gens:
BOY do I have A LOT to complain a bout here
This is with all those "high quality" settings turned on, though even without em, the noise-mode bass would be off-pitch anyway and it makes a lot of gameplay videos of games and hacks thta use it sound absolutely terrible.
Bonus comparisons:
Regen:
PSG is slightly off-pitch which can sound nice but may make things sound weird
BlastEM:
Closest to real hardware although may sound muffled on the default settings.
Once I'm finished with this project, I will release a version of the soundtrack recorded directly from my Megadrive.

Snap the Sentinel is 2 years old today! If you've been waiting for a good excuse to buy the soundtrack, it's only $2.50 for the rest of the day. You'll get music from future updates for free!

What's wrong with the audio in Sonic Mega Collection? I'm not doubting you or anything. It's just that between my not being an audiophile and the decades since I actually played the Genesis versions of Sonic 2 and 3 (and possibly also my Genesis being a later model) I can't hear anything wrong with the GameCube version.
This is one case where I don't think you have to be an audiophile to tell the difference. Go back and listen to my original Sonic Origins video where I talk about sound emulation problems. It contains an example of why the old "Genesis Classics Collection" version of Sonic 2 sounds so bad, contrasted with what it sounded like on real hardware. It is so different that it's like a different sound effect entirely.
Here's that same sound in Mega Collection:
Note: They did not replace the sign spinner sound with a new sound. This is the emulation failing to reproduce the original, unmodified game data, and it sounds completely different.
In its defense, most of Sonic Mega Collection sounds okay. Some sounds are a little more hissy or have a bit of a strange warble to them. It's like listening to the game on an old cassette. But it's the few edge case sounds like this that when they are wrong, they are massively, deeply wrong.
Another good test case for good/bad Genesis sound emulation is the rotor sound that Tails makes in Sonic 3.
As long as you're using an official, 90's era Sega Genesis, these sounds are always going to sound correct. No official hardware has these sound bugs. The main difference in sound between different models of Genesis hardware is the application of a low-pass filter (which makes it so sharp sounds get muffled so they aren't so harsh).
The sound only changes like this when a software emulator can't replicate the nuanced effects of a real Sega Genesis Yamaha sound chip.
