Febuwhump 2023

Day 27. Survivor's guilt

Erik was helping with the construction of the new wing for Genosha's community center. The island had seen a steady increase of people and more space was greatly needed. They had been busy building new houses the last few weeks and after this, Erik could finally have a small break with work.

He was just finishing the roof, placing the last tiles there with his powers, when a timid voice called from down on the ground.

"Umm, Magneto?" Erik looked down and saw a group of four young adult mutants, barely out of their teens. They seemed worried about something and as the roof was as good as done, Erik yelled to the other workers that they would have a ten minute break, before he floated back down.

"Yes, what is it?" He asked the group and the girl with brightly coloured feathers pushed the blond boy forward.

"Well..." The boy started, before looking behind him at his friends, each of whom looked at him expectantly. The boy took a deep breath and continued. "We were supposed to go to the the Shark Trap beach, but as we were walking past your house- Because, you know, it's the fastest way to get there!" The boy hurried to explain, not that he had to, Erik didn't care if people walked past his house, but these kids seemed to be newcomers. He just hoped that the boy would get to the point. "But when we tried, we just couldn't." The boy finished and if that was the point, then Erik didn't get it.

"You just couldn't?" He repeated, trying to urge the boy to explain better and it seemed that his friends weren't too impressed with him either.

"You really suck at narrating, Halo." The boy with completely black eyes stated and the blond boy, Halo, turned to glare at his friend.

"Well why don't you speak, then!?" He hissed.

As the two boys were staring daggers at each other, the other girl with black hair sighed and spoke up.

"What we meant, Magneto, is that it felt like some kind of power was preventing us, making us feel... Terrible, both emotionally and then even physically." As the girl spoke, Erik could feel the worry grow in his chest.

"And then we remembered, that your friend is a telepath isn't he?" The feathered girl barely managed to end her sentence when Erik already hurried past them.

If Charles' powers were going rogue, the whole island might be in a lot of trouble. But Erik was more concerned about his friend. It had been clear to him, that Charles was still recovering fom everything that had happened with Mystique and that Jean girl months ago. When he had come to Genosha he had been exhausted and wary of everything and everyone around him. He had managed to open up more as the time went on, but he was still prone to withdrawing into himself when the memories and the pain became too much.

But this week, Charles had been doing well. Erik hadn't seen him much, busy as he had been with the construction work, but when he would return home, Charles had always been smiling and would talk to Erik about his own day and been curious about the progress with Erik's crew. It had seemed that Charles had been getting his old energy back. Until today.

Erik made it at the front of his house and could immediately understand the earlier group's words. The closer he got to the front door, the heavier the air felt. He could feel the shame and self-loathing come from the house in waves and it started to even manifest with pain in his chest and head. All his senses were telling him to turn around and get away, but Erik kept walking with heavy steps. Charles needed him.

"Charles?" Erik called out when he managed to get inside. Everything looked as it had when he had left that morning and somehow it only made the house seem more eerie. There was no answer, so Erik tried again, but this time with his mind. 'Charles?' But the result was the same.

It was only when Erik rounded to the kitchen that he found Charles. Or, he saw his wheelchair first, lying sideways on the floor while Charles was sitting on the floor, leaning against the cupboard doors in the corner. He didn't seem hurt in any way, but his eyes were bloodshot and looking at nothing and he was tightly hugging himself.

Erik was by his side immediately, kneeling on the floor. He put one of his hands on the telepath's shoulder and the other he used to cup his cheek and turn his head.

"Charles." Erik called his friend'd name, but there was no change, so he brought their foreheads gently together. 'Charles.'

There was a tidalwave of hurt and visions of fire, blood and death. So many dead, because of him. He should have worked harder! He should have seen what he was becoming! It should have been him!

'Charles!' Erik all but screamed in their minds that had been slammed and coiled together. He had to shake Charles out of this state, he had to wake him up from the nightmare he was stuck in.

And to Erik's relief, he could hear a gasp of breath and the telepathic pressure that had surrounded their home seemed to dissipate. Not completely, but mostly. Erik opened his eyes, not sure when he had closed them, and saw Charles' eyes looking back. He seemed shaky and thin, somehow, like a tiniest blow of wind would make him fall apart like an autumn leaf.

"Erik?" His voice was barely a whisper and had Erik been an inch further away, he couldn't have heard it.

"It's okay, Charles. I'm here." Erik comforted the man, running his hand up and down the telepath's arm, trying to steady him. "Can you tell me what happened?" He asked and Charles' eyes turned unfocused again.

"A nightmare." He muttered. "I tried to ignore it. I tried to keep moving but I couldn't." His voice broke with the last word and he closed his eyes.

Erik gathered him into his arms and pulled him to sit sideways on his lap, Charles' head resting against his shoulder. The telepath's hands gripped Erik's shirt tightly and he hid his face against his neck.

"It should have been me." He sobbed quietly and Erik held him little tighter.

"Shhhh. It will be okay." Erik murmured. "I got you."

Charles had been there for Erik, when he had felt the same after his family had been taken from him. He had helped him find a way back to light when he had thought there was nothing left for him. And now it was Erik's turn to do the same for him. He would not leave Charles alone to deal with this pain.

these mortal-enemies, two-sides-of-the-same-coin, you-are-my-only-equal ships drive me insane for many many reasons... but especially because of what they can turn into, given enough time.

you're the hero, you're supposed to be good, and it's been years and years of performing a balancing act. you've carried the world on your shoulders for so long and you thought that sacrificing yourself for others was the right thing to do, but it hasn't fed you. instead the abyss in you deepens and howls. why are you feeling this way, when you've tried to do everything right? and you own little else other than your own pain, but you also own this person who's been there for so long, orchestrating your destruction, getting to know you inside out so they can ruin you. they see you for who you are and they don't expect the things other people do from you. you pay for the freedom you feel when you're with the monster by skewering yourself with guilt. you'd feel utterly alone without this knife to turn inside yourself and you feel all the more broken for needing it. you refuse to let them die and you refuse to let them go, and it's the most selfish thing you've ever done because the monster keeps setting the world on fire. they cannot help who they are.

but can't you just have this one thing? it hurts, and it's mangled and it's scarred, but it's utterly yours and you want it. can't you keep this one thing for yourself? can't you just have the person that makes you feel alive?

one thing i love is when media whose central relationship is ambiguously gay has one Central Moment that shapes the relationship and changes its path and thus the entire canon universe forever and fandom gives that Pivotal Moment just some random romance plotpoint shorthand name. the beach divorce. the shark date. these men are about to confess their love and/or kill each other and we all decided this was going to be named after Meet-Ugly Bingo pinterest inspo board no. 246 and i love that actually :)

Resurrection of Magneto - Issue 2

For all Cherik lovers:

If you haven't been following / don't follow the comics - Magneto has been dead since 2022 after his battle with Uranos in AXE: Judgement Day and has stayed dead because he asked not to be resurrected (yes resurrections were/are a thing in the Krakoan era for mutants). The new mini RoM is about Storm going on a journey to... purgatory somewhere?... to bring Magneto back to the land of the living because she heard his 'call'/dreamt he was in pain and regretted his choice. When she finds him though, he is very determinedly NOT interested in coming back, wanting to atone for his sins and because he's just so TIRED y'all. But then:

Then Storm is like 'Bestie let me catch you up it's been a NO GOOD VERY BAD DAY for mutants':

As you can see, Mags is PISSED because he specifically told Storm with his dying breath he was worried about Charles being left alone and what he might do if pushed to his limits and that he needed (her) support...

It's a little hilarious that Mags is more upset with Storm for botching things ('YOU HAD ONE JOB, ORORO') than with Charles' (questionable? depends who you ask) decision-making and starts flinging metal name plates of his victims at her (i.e. people he's killed or were killed because of him and yes he's been tormenting himself, surrounded by walls and walls and walls of their names).

Then we get THIS panel of Erik remembering how he cradled his 'friend' in his arms and lamenting how Charles was the only one who saw that ERIK/MAX/MAGNUS/MAGNETO mattered too, and that HE (and not just his victims) also suffered from his actions....'WHAT DID I DO, CHARLES?'

'SO I CHOSE DEATH OVER THE DREAM I BUILT WITH MY FRIEND' - HE'S SO SORRY HE ABANDONED YOU, CHHHHHHARRRRRRLLLLLEESSSSS!!!!

But then Storm says 'but look at all the lives you've saved, that's important too. You need to come back and help us SAVE mutant kind and HE says:

BABE, WAIT FOR ME I'M COMING HOME!!!

"I know that you took the things that mean the most to me" and "Maybe you should have fought harder for them" like....that's not about Raven. That's just not how you talk about a sibling. That's about Erik. Charles very explicitly (and understandably) feels he was abandoned, like Erik was able to just up and leave his life and take away the greatest love Charles had ever known without caring how much it hurt. And for Erik it's always been about wanting Charles to join him, wanting Charles to fight with him, maybe even wanting Charles to love him enough to say "screw the world" the same way Erik does. Charles is pissed because Erik took himself out of Charles' life on that beach and Erik is pissed because Charles chose the other side over him and let him go.

Jean Grey erases Magneto's mind - or so she thinks. When Charles finds his body, he brings it back to the mansion, and begins the arduous task of putting Erik's mind together. Of course, when it comes to Erik and persevering, it's always a lot more effective than he expects.

To Breathe Again (Impossibilities Remix), by Unforgotten: Erik's pov from the original movies timeline. The old men are old!!! It's a 3,879 words oneshot and it's beautiful

After Liberty Island, you think you must have burned that bridge at last. After Alkali Lake, you're even more certain. What once seemed so easy is now an impossibility, and the dream that once plagued you no longer comes.

Then Charles dies and you know: Going home was never truly impossible until now.

The Cherik fans have been flooding my inbox lololol. Not that I mind. But fear not, I have come with a slightly suggestive in some areas yandere alphabet! Also I’ll make the full blown nsfw one at some point-

Affection: How do they show their love and affection? How intense would it get?

Erik respects his darlings space, but at the same time he can only hold off for so long before the need for physical contact with them becomes too overwhelming. Erik usually shows his love and affection through long, drawn out, hugs. If he’s really desperate for some loving though, Erik will try to coax you into giving him kisses. The minute you start to reciprocate his actions, Erik is practically attached to your hip, all of his free time being spent with you and vice versa.

Blood: How messy are they willing to get when it comes to their darling?

Erik is not afraid to kill, even if it “throws him off a bit” (his words), but I think his ideal way of dealing with problems in the opera house is carefully planned sabotage. Whether that be messing with the backdrop and curtains, or even kidnapping you mid show.

Cruelty: How would they treat their darling once abducted? Would they mock them?

Erik is actually incredibly gentle and sweet once he has you in his lair, he would never mock or throw angry words your way, even if you did something to upset him. He gives you the best of everything he ever gets his hands on, for example, he’ll always make sure you have the finest dresses, jewelry, hair products, anything you could ever ask for! Erik will even give you his entire bedroom if he thinks the guest chambers aren’t to your liking! If you tell him you can both just share his room, Erik is over the moon, shocked and blushing underneath his mask as he shyly agrees. I hope you’re prepared for being clung to like a teddy bear the entire night.

Darling: Aside from abduction, would they do anything against their darling’s will?

The only thing Erik would do against your will is hug and kiss you. He knows he should respect your space, he knows you probably need time alone after being kidnapped, but he’s so starved of affection that it overpowers his will to let you be on occasion. There are, however, very rare instances where Erik kissing you can turn heated. An example of this might be him opening his mouth into the kiss in the hopes you’ll slip your tongue into his mouth to take charge of him, (because yes, even though this particular version of Erik is pretty vanilla, he still falls on the more submissive side), or Erik pressing himself snug against you, desperate for your touch. Of course, Erik will never force you to do anything beyond that, and as soon as he realizes he’s getting ‘excited’ down there he runs off to his room out of embarrassment and to pleasure himself, it gets really awkward sometimes because Erik is really vocal, but all you can really do is try to find a different room, but he’s VERY vocal so it usually doesn’t work. However, that doesn’t mean he won’t beg for you on occasion in the hopes that you’ll change your mind.

Exposed: How much of their heart do they bare to their darling? How vulnerable are they when it comes to their darling?

Erik sees no reason to hide his emotions from you. You’re his darling, you deserve to see every side of him. In fact, the only thing he would ever try to hide from you is his face, but if you show him nothing but love and compassion once you see it, Erik will even go out of his way to avoid putting his mask on around you.

Fight: How would they feel if their darling fought back?

Erik hates it when you fight back, it makes him feel worse about kidnapping you than he already does.

Game: Is this a game to them? How much would they enjoy watching their darling try to escape?

This isn’t a game to Erik in the slightest, he just wants you to be happy down under the opera house with him. Every time you try to escape his heart shatters. :(

Hell: What would be their darling’s worst experience with them?

Probably the worst experience you have with Erik isn’t even physical on your end, if I had to guess. I feel like the two worst experiences for you with him are when uses his tears and your own empathy against you, or when he goes out and sabotages/kills your friends in the opera house.

Ideals: What kind of future do they have in mind for/with their darling?

Erik wants to marry you above all else, but once that happens, he wants to escape with you to the surface world and live out the rest of your lives in domestic bliss. I could also see Erik wanting a child or two, either adopted or through you giving birth, it’s up to you two to talk about.

Jealousy: Do they get jealous? Do they lash out or find a way to cope?

You would be a fool to think that Erik doesn’t get jealous, and when he does, it’s not pretty in the slightest. Of course he would never take out his jealousy on you! The only thing he would do is that he would ask for you to be extra loving and praise him more than usual in bed that night, if you’re to that point. Taking out his jealousy on others, however, is something he would take pleasure in, whether that be outright killing them or just setting them up to fail.

Kisses: How do they act around or with their darling?

Erik is very loving to you, to the point that it’s sickeningly sweet. There are certain ways you can fluster him or make him shy though, like hugging or kissing him of your own volition. Since dry humor and sarcastic quips are some of Erik’s key personality traits, if he finds you laughing over something he said, you’ll notice that he tends to try and say humorous things more often.

Love letters: How would they go about courting or approaching their darling?

Erik definitely starts off with writing you letters when you first peak his interest, and after that it escalates to you hearing his voice, to you seeing his physical appearance, to you two going on little outings together, to you seeing his face, and then finally Erik’s obsessive tendencies get the better of him and you find yourself kidnapped despite Gerard’s protests.

Mask: Are their true colors drastically different from the way they act around everyone else?

Erik doesn’t really act different around you versus others per se, you just get to see more of his personality and other traits that no one has ever been worthy of seeing before.

Naughty: How would they punish their darling?

Erik doesn’t really punish you, to be honest. I think the worst he’d ever do is lock you in a room for a spell until you calmed down.

Oppression: How many rights would they take away from their darling?

Erik would only take two of your rights away, and one isn’t even on purpose. The one he would take away without necessarily meaning to is your right to privacy, being that he follows you around like a lost puppy, much like his other counterparts. The one he would knowingly take away is your ability to travel to the surface world without his accompanyment.

Patience: How patient are they with their darling?

Erik’s patience is endless, I cannot stress this enough. He never loses his temper at you, or even around you!

Quit: If their darling dies, leaves, or successfully escapes, would they ever be able to move on?

In no way, shape, or form would Erik ever be able to move on, if anything he would try to hunt you down for as long as he lives if you escaped, and if you died he’s following right behind you.

Regret: Would they ever feel guilty about abducting their darling? Would they ever let their darling go?

Erik feels guilty everyday for kidnapping you, but he absolutely refuses to let you go, and once his mind is set almost nothing can change it.

Stigma: What brought about this side of them (childhood, curiosity, etc)?

Its a combination of his childhood, being rejected for appearances beyond his control, and such a strong desperation for love that he would have ended up this way regardless of the former two.

Tears: How do they feel about seeing their darling scream, cry, and/or isolate themselves?

Erik will probably cry with you, because like I said earlier, he feels very guilty for abducting you. With the way Erik hangs off you, though, I don’t really see you getting the chance to isolate yourself.

Unique: Would they do anything different from the classic yandere?

I’m kind of drawing a blank for this one, sorry.

Vice: What weakness can their darling exploit in order to escape?

One of your best chances of escaping is to pretend to be in a consensual relationship with Erik, and then escape when his back is turned, possibly with the help of Gerard.

Wit’s end: Would they ever hurt their darling?

NEVER, Erik would rather kill himself!

Xoanon: How much would they revere or worship their darling? To what length would they go to win their darling over?

Erik regards you as an angel amongst devils, himself included, and counts himself lucky to be able to be in your presence. There is no length Erik wouldn’t go to for the chance to win you over.

Yearn: How long do they pine after their darling before they snap?

I think the longest Erik could go is a month or two before he kidnaps you. What can I say? You’re his biggest weakness and his biggest strength.

Zenith: Would they ever break their darling?

I really don’t think it’s possible for Erik to break you, if he did, it would be a complete and utter accident, and nothing would stop him from trying to fix you!
