2023 Reading Summary
Tumblr media
I'm late...again... It's hardly a surprise. However, I've finally looked at my reading for 2023. The only stats I tracked this year was the genre, and even this was a simplified version because I decided I don't care. I spent most of my time this year recording what I thought about the books I read not the data surrounding them. And, if I'm honest, I don't think I'll even bother with the genre in 2024.
The Numbers
In total I read 84 books, which considering I've been working or training full time all year is surprising for me. On average I tend to read 60-70 books in a normal year, usually towards the lower end, so almost 20 books over that is a very pleasant surprise.
The biggest surprise has been my change in most read genre! I've only recorded 4 genres, classic, nonfiction, fantasy, and general fiction, these broke down to:
Classic 53%
Fantasy 31%
Nonfiction 12%
General fiction 4%
Fantasy is usually my top genre with over 50%, so this is a change (I don't think it will be permanent). However the largest shock is the nonfiction! I never read nonfiction for fun, but I guess this is a change from leaving university. I don't have to learn for work anymore, so I'm now looking into these things for fun as the mood takes me. I am disappointed these haven't been history books, however, I'm hoping to change that in 2024 and it has been nice learning more about literature in 2023.
Top Three Books
Tumblr media
I tried to do a top 5 but the gap between 3 and 4 was too large, so I've narrowed it down to a top 3.
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke
The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula K. Le Guin
Evelina by Fanny Burney
I loved all of these books in different ways, and I think I've done a mini review of each in the months I read them. However, if anyone wants detailed thoughts then I'm more than happy to talk about any of these books.
Biggest Surprises
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins
Silas Marner by George Eliot
Goblin Market and Other Poems by Christina Rossetti
Fugitive Prince by Janny Wurts
All of these were excellent, they just weren't quite in my top three.
Most Disappointing
Witches: James I and the English Witch-Hunts by Tracy Borman
The Fitz and the Fool Trilogy by Robin Hobb (I DNFed this series after Fool's Quest and I'm heartbroken, but I have major issues with this trilogy in a way I couldn't keep reading as it was destroying my love for Fitz.)
Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson (this is standing in for all of the secret project books)
Goals (Sort Of...)
To continue the surprises... I've only listened to 4 audiobooks, so most of those books were read physically or through an ebook. This is huge for me as I used to consume about a third of my books through audio, it's a massive improvement because I don't retain them very well. Listening to fewer audiobooks was a big part of my informal (in other words unwritten) reading goals and I'm very happy to have got it down this far. I do think it'll go up again next year because I've got a lengthy commute to work now, but I've also broken the habit of sitting at home listening when I could easily read the book myself and get more out of it.
I did as well with not worrying about numbers or data surrounding the books I'm reading. I deliberately retired my spreadsheet this year and only kept up with my reading journal. After a week or so I didn't miss it in the slightest. I'm not a hard data/stats kind of person, but I am easily persuaded to keep these sorts of records. I started keeping a spreadsheet in 2019 where I track genre, pages, author gender, and format in addition to the book information, by 2022 I was tracking book info, series, genre, format, author info (just too much to list), pages, month read, where I bought the book, if it was a tbr, new or library read, reread or new to me, and rating. It was too much! It was hard work, I was MISERABLE, and I didn't care. It was performing to the standards of what you see in the reading community online... So, I ditched the spreadsheet and I've been much happier. I've read better books because I haven't had my stats in mind, and I've read more. I had more time to actually read because I haven't been spending an inordinate amount of time researching books and entering data into a spreadsheet! I'm definitely making this a permanent change.
I've also used my ereader a lot more this year, I have no numbers to back this up but I've naturally been reaching for it regularly and it has done me good. I've not only read more frequently and for longer periods of time, but I've been more comfortable while reading (no more back, neck, or arm strain from 1000+ page fantasy tomes!) and I've tried books I was hesitant about buying physically because I could access a digital copy. I did have a massive problem with my ereader in November because my Kobo Libra 2 started to have battery changes that nothing resolved and then it died completely. Unfortunately I lost a lot of my reading data, including my notes, which has upset me. But I have saved my elibrary and bought a "new" device (it's a Boox Nova 3) so I can still read - I might discuss getting a Boox separately. However, I am much more cautious about note taking through a device and I'm sticking to recording everything in my physical journal.
This brings me nicely onto my reading journal. I wanted to overhaul my journal this year because my old journal format was growing stale and uninspiring to use. I was often leaving it for weeks at a time and often scrambling to write up 5 or 6 books in one go because I'd forgotten to do it as I was reading. So, I worked through several different styles of journal and found a new, more flexible, and engaging style that can fit my changing moods throughout the year. I'm definitely going to discuss this at a later date, so I won't say much here. But I am very happy to have a new journal system and I'm excited to get into it properly this year.

Worst of 2023 Music #2: Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice “Barbie World”
Certain properties always have certain ties to music.
The year’s second worst tune unfortunately has ties to one of them.
Tumblr media
26 Years Ago, the group known as Aqua ended up having their only major hit with the ode to plastic being fantastic.
Tumblr media
So when you have a live action version of the famous doll coming out but the group and director said no to direct inclusion of the song in the movie, you do the next best thing.
Remix city.
Only here with Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, the song ends up being a mere afterthought with a rap laced melody interspersed with the iconic chorus.
For not having the ability to directly have the song this falters on that ideal.
Just glad this was the soundtracks only real misstep.
SUM 22: Life in plastic may be fantastic, but when it comes to the iconic song, Nicki Minaj dilutes it down to a mess made all the worse.

THE AARONS 2023 - Worst Film
It’s a marvel this category isn’t filled up with superhero films after the year they’ve had. Here are The Aarons for Worst Film:
Tumblr media
#10. 65
Tumblr media
A Quiet Place screenwriters Scott Beck and Bryan Woods don’t knock it out of the (Jurassic) park with their subsequent Spielberg homage. 65 will have viewers counting down the seconds until they can go home. The science-fiction tale strands stars Adam Driver and Ariana Greenblatt in a B-movie bereft of a reason to see it. The fusion of futuristic tech and ferocious animals should have been easy fodder for frivolous entertainment. Instead, the sluggish pace of the film’s imminent extinction event suggests it wasn’t a meteor or da ice age that killed the dinosaurs; it was extreme boredom.
Tumblr media
#9. Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire
Tumblr media
Director Zack Snyder likes to paint himself as a rebel against a restrictive studio system while being constantly given new opportunities without cause. His latest big-budget misfire is a childish mash-up of Star Wars and Seven Samurai. Par for the course, the prosaic director copies his inspirations while completely misunderstanding their objectives. Already, the film’s awkward and abruptly-ended parade of thinly-sketched characters is being billed as another incomplete vision, requiring not just two parts but two cuts of each part to truly fulfill Snyder’s intentions. Maybe his hardcore fans will be pleased at the end of the prolonged journey; everyone else will be over the Moon long before then.
Tumblr media
#8. The Exorcist: Believer
Tumblr media
From the beginning, the involvement of David Gordon Green inspired little faith in Believer. Sure enough, the director of Halloween kills interest in his proposed trilogy one film sooner than his last. It’s unclear what exactly led the studio to release a sequel fifty years later that’s tamer than a TV edit of the original. It surely couldn’t have been the return of Ellen Burstyn in her Oscar-nominated role of Chris MacNeil given how quickly the film disfigures and discards the character. That said, it may be for the best that she could excise herself from the proceedings before its embarrassing ending. The franchise is no stranger to desecration but, even at its worst, it was never before this uncompelling.
Tumblr media
#7. Five Nights At Freddy’s
Tumblr media
Topping the box-office may have demonstrated audiences’ appetite for the haunted pizzeria franchise but, make no mistake, the film adaptation of Freddy’s is as run-down as its central establishment. The animatronic mascots at center stage only manage the most pedestrian of jump-scares; they’re far from the only ones just going through the motions. The script, written in part by franchise creator Scott Cawthon, stretches out its thin premise with banal characters and a bizarre child-custody B-plot. It might have been entertaining if it had been any more cheesy. Instead, Freddy’s only serves up an interminable runtime; five nights has never felt so long.
Tumblr media
#6. Hypnotic
Tumblr media
Hypnotic is aptly named; the thriller from Spy Kids director Robert Rodriguez certainly commands one’s attention. The plot, which revolves around Ben Affleck sleepwalking through a conspiracy involving dueling factions of psychics, is simply too inane to ignore. Rodriguez wrote his initial script back in 2002 but was clearly susceptible to outside influences; the film rips off several works that were released before and since, including the dream-like architecture of Inception. Although the director may pride himself on his low-budget prowess, even he can’t make those knock-off sequences look good (though they’re not the silliest instance of replicating elaborate scenery on a miniscule budget here). The film fulfills its intentions on one front: once it’s all over, audiences will have a hard time believing any of it was real.
Tumblr media
#5. Children of the Corn
Tumblr media
The latest offspring of the rotten franchise at least had a kernel of a good idea: the remake roots its characters’ motivations in righteous fury at environmental recklessness rather than strictly religious fervor. However, Children never develops this into any kind of sustenance. The horror here is as, ahem, corny as can be, particularly its stale translation of demonic entity He Who Walks Behind the Rows. Director Kurt Wimmer shows no growth as a director since his last film in 2006, the infamous Ultraviolet; the wooden child actors at least have their youth as an excuse. Sadly though, if ranked within the rest of the series, this one would still land in the middle of the row.
Tumblr media
#4. Haunted Mansion
Tumblr media
2023 was home to many failures for The Walt Disney Company, but none quite as ghastly as the new Haunted Mansion. It’s baffling how a film this overstuffed with actors (including Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, and Danny DeVito among many others) could end up this vacant. Indeed, the biggest throughline of the theme-park adaptation is not its attempted reflection on grief but its pervasive and perverse product placement (One character’s tearful monologue about his dead wife comes complete with a prominent Baskin Robbins namedrop). It’s definitely haunting, just not in the way they hoped for.
Tumblr media
#3. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3
Tumblr media
The Big Fat franchise became even more bloated last year with a picture that can most charitably be described as ‘an all-expenses paid trip to Greece for its cast’. There’s certainly no storytelling reason why audiences are still following the adventures of this extended family, which haphazardly include a last-minute wedding of two very minor characters to justify its title. Nia Vardalos finally receives the director’s chair in addition to her regular writing work just in time for there to be no fresh direction to take things in. If she tries to reunite everyone for a fourth go-round, they would be wise to divorce themselves from it as quickly as possible.
Tumblr media
#2. Pet Sematary: Bloodlines
Tumblr media
Bloodlines resurrects the series last seen in 2019; if this was how it was going to come back, it should have stayed buried. While Stephen King is an imaginative writer, trying to stretch a single chapter of any novel into a feature-length film is like getting blood from a stone. The zombie prequel stumbles its way from scene to scene in search of life, but Bloodlines has nothing for audiences to relate to. Even screen icons like David Duchovny and Pam Grier can’t rouse any interest. Exploiting known franchises may be easy, but, sometimes, making anything else instead is better.
Tumblr media
AND THE WORST FILM OF 2023 IS…
#1. Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey
Tumblr media
Disney slowly losing their stranglehold on intellectual property is a bit bittersweet; Honey is bad enough to sour anyone on the idea of a public domain. The shoddy slasher film, which blustered its way onto the marketplace as soon as the filmmakers could profit from it, is barely recognizable as Pooh but unmistakable as crap. Making the lovable animal into a feral murderer may be legal now, but writer/director Rhys Frake-Waterfield didn’t think, think, think up any other ideas beyond just stirring the pot. Winnie is hoping to prey on one’s curiosity with its premise alone. Word of advice? Don’t bother.

Top 5 Worst Films of 2023
Yep, it's that time of year again where you're all subjected to wordier opinions of the films I either disliked or were indifferent to! I'll post the best list later on, but for now, here are the worst...
5. Mercy Falls
Tumblr media
I appreciate British films being shown in cinemas. I appreciate this cost about £20 and a speck of dust to make. However, it’s incredibly dull and predictable. There isn’t much else to say about it.
4. The Flash
Tumblr media
Only this low because I expected it to be this bad. The literal ‘worlds collide’ montage at the end was a great idea, but the waxy CGI reconstructions of Superman actors, living or dead, left a bad taste in my mouth. Ezra Miller’s laugh was annoying, and Sasha Calle and Michael Shannon were absolutely wasted.
3. Five Nights At Freddy's
Tumblr media
How the fuck did Scott Cawthon fuck his own premise up? It should have been a simple bottle film that cost $10m at most. One guy. One room. Dodgy animatronics. Instead, we’ve got a protagonist who I wanted the animatronics to kill, sudden genre switches, subplots galore, and weird character decisions. The worst thing about it is that it didn’t even include the famous Toreador March. That would have improved the film somewhat.
2. Fast X
Tumblr media
I saw it for a charity drive and I wish I’d doubled the target. This was physically painful to sit through. This hasn’t lodged from the no. 2 spot since I saw it back in May. I fully believe Daniela Melchior was tricked into doing this – she probably thought she was auditioning for a legitimate film. Jason Momoa apparently chose this film to actually act, and carried it the whole way through. Good thing he’s built as all get-out.
Honourable Mentions
Love Again: The best bits were Nick Jonas’s cameo and the sweet and funny montage over the end credits. Everything else is naff.
Assassin Club: This not having a Wiki page was probably the best way to insult it – arguably the best way to insult any film. Daniela Melchior had a terrible year. Hope 2024 is better for her.
Unwelcome: Completely forgot this existed, to be honest. Should tell you all you need to know.
And finally, the worst thing I saw this year...
1. A Good Person
Tumblr media
This earned the great dishonour of not just being the worst thing I saw this year, but the worst thing I’ve seen in a long time. Old was bad, but it had the cave scene. Burning was terrible, but it had gorgeous cinematography. Shit, even the 365 Days films were bad, but they were at least easy to laugh at. Zach “Can’t Accept That Scrubs Ended Thirteen Years Ago” Braff’s latest effort A Good Person does not have a single redeeming thing about it. Not even the usually-reliable Florence Pugh could save it. Much like Fast X, this has not lodged from this spot since I saw it. It’s the first film to reach the “coveted” 0.25/5 rating on here, too. In East Asian languages such as Cantonese, the number four is closely associated with death. This is Braff’s fourth go at directing, and it bombed. I pray that it kills his career.
Thanks for reading! Best post coming soon.
~Mikey

Reshi’s worst gaming moments of 2023
Warning: This does contain some curse words and some mild ranting but is generally just for me expressing some of the worst fails that I find personally in the gaming industry this year. Tread carefully if you don’t want to read.
It’s that time of the year again folks, and you know what that means….
It’s time that many of us begin wrapping up this year, and in some cases, discussing some of what I feel are some of the worst gaming related moments of this year.
And while this year did have some wonderful game releases, there was also a lot of chaos, dumpster fires, and quite a few RIPs this year.
Please note: for this “list”, I will not be discussing drama regarding YouTubers, streamers, and/or gaming critics/reviewers unless it has a direct tie to a game or the industry itself/and or the drama was large enough to be considered problematic (IE: The Hogwarts Legacy harassment from certain less than stellar members of the internet community on streamers from last year which I did cover and shame in my last Worst of Gaming in 2022) so no Zero Punctuation.
But anyways, let’s get this dumpster fire a rolling shall we?
Two big Oofs, So long E3 and Volition. You will be missed.
We all know reboots and or remakes. Almost every major franchise gets them at some point… Aaaaand many of those tend to be a hit or a miss.
For one, you may have one that is a massive success such as the FF7 remake and or perhaps a middle-ground like that of Maverick Hunter X that really doesn’t do anything and just gets ignored. Or on the other and most likely hand, you have a reboot that absolutely ruins everything about what we all loved about the original, disembowel everything we loved about the original, and spit it back at us to less than positive reception.
It happened with DMC which thankfully recovered. But what happens when executive meddling that ends up killing a studio.
Then you’ve got the Saints Row “Remake” from last year which sadly ended up killing the studio all because Deep Silver decided to force the dev team to change things away from the original idea.
And in other news, it turns out that after nearly 20 years that E3 is finally kicking the bucket. There’s a number of reasons from the pandemic to the whole gaming companies following Nintendo with the Direct format and while I’m sad to see it go, I had a feeling that it wasn’t likely going to last long after 2020
RIP E3 and Voltion, you will be missed. And f*** you Deep Silver for ruining a franchise.
Oh blizzard…. Blizzard… blizzard… (And Microsoft. Keep your hands to yourself, we’re not here to make Xbox exclusive here.)
We all know about this and thank fuck it seems to be dying down after the big M bought them out. It was a mess.
But don’t think Microsoft is off the hook. Some documents did reveal that the company did show an interest in possibly trying to buy out a certain group of game studios from Japan which I doubt would go well with by fans of some of these company’s franchises. Capcom told them to screw off, Nintendo I highly doubt would let them, and Sega?
….
MS, as much as I love your computers because MACSrPOO, leave the little guys in the market alone. We don’t need any more franchises going exclusive to your console. You had your cookie with Activison-Blizzard, now keep your hand out of the cookie jar.
Kong and Gollum exist…
Runners up for worst games of the year since this wouldn’t be a list without them. They fit the bill, they’re buggy, they’re glitchy, they were rushed and look like a low budget PS3 game (and one killed its studio after release and LoTR fans were not happy)
Also strangely Gollum released recently on Switch in Japan of all places and world-wide is still TBA (I thought that was kinda funny)
Tumblr media
Starfield: “Dead” space filled with humans and pronoun dramas
Another we all saw coming. Starfield is a clusterfuck like a lot of Bethesda games but at least it’s playable unlike a certain fallout game a few years ago.
Most people find it boring and personally I’m only a tiny bit frustrated that I’m forced to play as a human and don’t have the option to play as another species as another space-sandbox allows you to do *cough cough* Starbound *cough cough*.
Also there was a whole drama over freaking pronouns and nexus removing a mod that got rid of them. Personally I don’t give a flip-flop and this whole drama since it was all stupid. I mean it’s fine if you don’t like pronouns or you do, and I'm fine with ppl modding a game and whatnot freely but please be civil about it.
Unity from unity’s redonculus fees
The indie scene is pissed and I understand why. Hey unity, spare the little guys and actually focus on the actual garbage *cough cough* asset flips using your engine
Insomniac got hacked: It was worse than the rockstar hack
Leaks happen all the time but hacks are a different thing which really sucks for companies as we saw only a few days of posting this.
Please do not go out looking for any content of this hack since this was done by a ransomeware group and out of respect for the devs.
Komani fracking up silent hill
Ah yes, the EA/Blizzard-Activison of the East and another fail. So we got a P2I (influence) television show and some more stuff I’m not sure off
EA officially bypasses Overwatch 2 (another disaster) with its annual sports release
Overwatch 2 is a big ripoff but it’s funny to see that it got bypassed by a buggy ass EA Sports game on Steam in terms of ratings

Worst of 2023 Music #1: Awkwafina and Daveed Diggs “The Scuttlebutt”
Oh Disney, when you go in on something you certainly know how to use the talent at your disposal.
Tumblr media
This year’s addition to the growing live action remake board involves the fabled mermaid from under the sea.
Which had the old classics, brought to life in new creative ways.
But we got three new ones in addition to this. Although losing the song with Odo as the chef going after Sebastian was a churner.
We had the ok, with Prince Eric wondering his place in his island kingdom and how he wants to see more.
We had the really good featuring the best addition that utilizes the vocal prowess of its star to show what Ariel was thinking while she couldn’t speak.
Tumblr media
And then this….
Scuttle the seagull was an unsung part of the original given personality by Buddy Hackett.
Here with the whole needing the underwater setting having to play a part. The bird was swapped for a northern gannet. And here we get Awkwafina a small doses comic that plays a larger part here.
But as her music taste was already not pleasant, here we get 2 full minutes of an eye gouging rap from Lin Manuel Miranda as her and Daveed Diggs mange to grind all momentum to a halt.
A scene in which scuttle lets Ariel know about Eric’s impending nuptials only took 12 seconds in the original. Gets stretched here for maximum Miranda usage.
The face close ups, with the uncanny valley of both Sebastian and Scuttle made all the worse.
I feel for the animators here, not pleasant having to salvage the worst song of the year. The comments on the audio only version made all the funnier.
SUM 22: Ariel did herself and the audience a favor by covering up the bird and the crab. Best way to save our eardrums.

THE AARONS 2023 - Worst TV Show
Last year I lost my dear network The CW. Sometimes, I can still hear its voice. Here are The Aarons for Worst TV Show:
Tumblr media
WINNER: Velma (Season 1) - Max
Tumblr media
Velma’s biggest mystery is who thought this adult-oriented spin on the Scooby-Doo mythos was a good idea. Mature subject matter can be and has been incorporated into the franchise before, but the new streaming series doesn’t have a clue what audience it wants to capture. The cringey self-deprecating humor suggests the makers aren’t fans of their own material, let alone the original. Its unlikeable overhaul of the gang has them spending more time simping and sniping with each other than scrounging up any narrative momentum. That’s not to mention the awkward absence of Scooby himself. Then again, Velma doesn’t need a talking dog: ‘rough’ is all there is to say.
Tumblr media
DISHONORABLE MENTIONS:
Goosebumps (Season 1) - Disney+
Viewers beware, you’re in for a terrible time with this bumpy adaptation that forsakes the campy charm of the books.
Tumblr media
American Horror Stories (Season 3) - Hulu
A writers strike meant there was less Horror than usual this year, but the episodes produced were no less horrible.
Tumblr media
Gotham Knights (Season 1) - CW
At least DC’s other Batman-based shows to never feature Batman put the spotlight on familiar names. In Knights, original creation Turner Hayes seeks to solve the mystery of the Court of Owls; audiences will be left with the question, “Who?”
Tumblr media
The Flash (Season 9) - CW
While it used to run circles around the rest of its shared universe, the final chapter of The Flash and the Arrowverse as a whole was quite clearly on its last legs.

THANK YOU FOR READING!

Podcast #41 - 2023 in Review Part 1
After a long break, we return to talk our tops and nots for 2023!
Has it really been two years since the last podcast? Yes and no. We DID record a year-end for 2022 (Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Menu were well-loved; Prey for the Devil and Don’t Worry Darling not so much). But Bob’s computer ate it. Oops. Well, this year’s survived the trip home! Without further ado, part 1. Part 2 to follow next week! https://share.transistor.fm/e/288fa482

"One thing, before I get off this [video]... the motherf-cker who said we're gonna keep this thing going until people start losing their houses and their apartments," Perlman says in the video. "Listen to me, motherf-cker, there's a lot of ways to lose your house. Some of it is financial, some of it is karma, and some of it is just figuring out who the f-ck said that — and we know who said that — and where he f-cking lives. There's a lot of ways to lose your house. You wish that on people, you wish that families starve, while you're making $27 f-cking million a year for creating nothing? Be careful, motherf-cker. Be really careful, 'cause that's the kind of sh-t that stirs sh-t up. Peace out." - Ron Perlman on Instagram today (7-14-2023)
