Bronze 90kg🥉 World Judo Championships - Doha 2023
This happened to the 81kg bronze match too. The pinned competitor just laid there not wanting to escape or struggle.
I wonder why. Was there a rule change that I'm not aware of?

Rena Kanokogi inspired the sports world to think differently about the notion of women in competitive sports. As a young girl, she learned judo from somebody in her Brooklyn neighbourhood. Her desires to compete in the city’s judo clubs were met by resistance; the club owners told Rena that judo was a man’s sport and that women were too frail and weak to compete.
Not one to quit on her goals, in 1959, Rena posed as a man to enter the New York State YMCA judo championships. Not only did Rena prove herself as an equal, she beat every single man she fought and won a gold medal. After being asked if she was a woman, she was forced to return the medal. “Had I said no, I don’t think women’s judo would have been in the Olympics. It instilled a feeling in me that no woman should have to go through this again,” she said.
With no options to compete in the United States, Rena went to Tokyo where she became the first woman at he main dojo. It was here that she met her husband, Ryohei Kanokogi. The duo soon returned to the United States where they started to coach judo and build the sport for women. In 1964, judo became an Olympic sport for men; Rena responded by threatening legal action if women were not treated equally and allowed to participate.
Women’s judo eventually became an Olympic sport in 1984 with Rena as the U.S. coach.

Giulia Gwinn/ When two sports collide
Being a professional athlete was always your dream. When you were younger you did all sorts of sports, Judo, swimming, football, cross country skiing, you did everything. And you were good at almost everything.
But two sport remained in your heart, football and skiing. When you got older you changed from cross country to Biathlon and as soon as the riffle was added into the mix you knew that Biathlon was you sport.
Being one of the best from early helped a lot. So in your first season as a Biathlet, you had just turned 14, you won the German youth championship.
Football would always remain a big part of your life and you still played with your old teammates now and then but Biathlon became your life.
Giuli and you met at a sports event and instantly hit it off.
She was the one to ask you on a date and from that day one you became almost inseparable. Still everyone around you thought that the two of you were just best friends.
And you played along, not directly hiding your relationship but also not rubbing it in. You loved the soft and subtle touches you guys shared whenever friends were around.
When Giulia ruptured her ACL for the second time you knew how hard the coming month would be for her and with your Welt cup season just around the corner you couldn’t even be by her side.
The good thing about it was, that she tried to come to all your races.
When you won the first race and so had the privilege to start in the yellow bib as the overall leading athlete for the first time in your senior career your girlfriend was standing in the crowd cheering you on.
It was a great feeling as the two of you couldn’t always be at each others completions because of conflicting schedules.
She traveled with you to Gelsenkirchen when you represented Germany at the World Team Challenge at the Schalke Arena.
When you walked into the home changing room she joked that you would be the only person to get her into another home changing room other than Bayerns.
She was the first to congratulate you after you won the race together with your teammate Benedikt Doll.
So when your season came to an end and you won the Overall Cup for the first time in your career Giulia was of course in the crowd. She pulled you into a bone cracking hug as soon as you had gotten rid of your ski’s and riffle. „I am so proud of you baby! You had such a phenomenal season and even tho I hate that I ruptured my ACL again I am so happy that I could be at so many of your races.“
She pulled back slightly to kiss you on the forehead. „I love you Giuli. Thank you that you were always by my side. I now how hard this has been for you but we’re so strong and I am so happy that you were able to be with me almost this whole season!“
So when Giuli had her first match after almost a whole year you where standing in the crowd, wearing her Trikot and shouting the loudest whenever she had the ball.
After the game, which Bayern won 3-0, you came down to the pitch. And was the first to greet you, having spent a lot of time with Giulis Teammates you became great friends with most of them.
„Hey long time no seen.“ She said before she pulled you into a quick hug.
„Hey Syd. Great game!“ „Thank you, I think the whole team was just happy to have Giuli back on the pitch.“
„She was so nervous the whole night, scared to let you all down or that she wasn’t got enough and I think also a bit scared of the possibility to rupture something again.“
But before Syd could answer you Giulia had crushed into you.
You laughed and hugged her back. „You look good in my Trikot, it suits you.“ She mumbled, not letting you go.
“You two are sickening cute, you know.” Came the voice of Klara from behind you.
You pulled back slightly to look at her.
“You are just jealous that your boyfriend isn’t here to hug you.” You couldn’t help answering. Giulia and you could almost see how Klara as well as Syd, who was still standing beside you, worked you words out.
“Wait wai wait, you guys are together!? Since when? Oh my God. I thought we were friends Giuli. Why did it you say something?”
You and your girlfriend couldn’t help but laugh about Klaras dumbfounded face.
“I mean we didn’t exactly hid it. We life together. I was at so many of her races. And my post after her World Cup win wasn’t exactly subtle, was it?”
Giulia had posted a picture with the two of you hugging, her kissing the corner of you lips. She had captioned it with the words “my golden girl”
The speculations around your relationship went up afterwards but still not one of your friends believed the rumors still believing that the two of you were only best friends.
With Sydney und Klara knowing it wasn’t long until the whole team knew. All being happy for the two of you.
That evening, when the two of you were lying in bed together relaxing, Arms around each other just socking the other in you couldn’t be happier.
Your relationship may not be the easiest with the two sports often colliding but you wouldn’t want it any other way.
You were each others biggest fans, wether you were at the race or match or you were watching it on TV, always supporting each other.
“I love you Giulia Gwinn. I am so so happy to have you by my side.”
Later that night when you waited for Giuli to finish up her nightly routine you made a Instagram post for your Girl. Happy to show your support and Love.

I am so proud of you. For now almost a year you were fighting to get back out there. Today all the hard work payed off. To see you back out on the pitch, doing what you love was one of the best moments in my life.
Sharing these moments with you will never get old.
Together trough thick and thin. I will always be by your side.
Love you endlessly, you no. 1 Fan❤️

One of the interesting things about international amateur competitions like wrestling, judo, boxing, etc is that sometimes the competition to represent certain countries is always harder than winning the actual Olympics or world championships. The competition to try to make the Japanese women’s wrestling team is significantly harder than trying to win a medal at worlds because that talent pool is DEEP. UFC fighter Kanako Murata beat future gold medalist Helen Maroulis at the Jr Worlds but couldn’t make the senior team because her main competition was Saori Yoshida, the 2nd greatest women’s wrestler ever.
The heavyweight competition at the Ivan Yarygin GP is legendary because Russia can send all their HWs who normally clean up.
The fights to be on the Cuban national boxing team are legendary and there are several guys who could and probably would have been Olympic champs who never make it out of Cuba cause there’s a dude like Andy Cruz in their way.

Fathy Aboelrokab (the smaller guy with the long hair) verses Kamal "Big Kimo" Basira, Feb 18th World Championship Sumo.
both of these guys are Judo black belts.
Tumblr media
Fathy had won his first match earlier in the evening (against Kyle Ferriter); i was really impressed with him. honestly, i was rooting for both of these guys. but oh, Big Kimo!
to be very honest i think we (me and @ibelieveinthepowerofstuff) both fell a little bit in love with this guy. there's just something about him. his spirit... like, listen: all of the athletes we saw were incredible. you could tell how dedicated they all were. but this guy is definitely something special. i don't know how else to say it.
now, about the match.
i was both looking forward to this one, and apprehensive of it, because i liked both of these guys a lot, and i wanted to see both of them succeed. i knew it was gonna be rough. one of them was going to lose! but actually, tbvh, i did see them both succeed.
Fathy executed an extremely impressive trip in the first bout after being forced nearly to the edge of the dohyo; ultimately he lost this match, but ohhh man. no way was anyone about to forget that. he has got amazing moves.
Big Kimo won the next bout by forcing Fathy outside the dohyo, meaning the match would be decided by a third bout. excitement! aaaah! and then he kept the momentum, starting out with open hand strikes, then both of them back to grappling, ending up with Fathy outside the ring again.
watch [here]! this match begins one hour and four minutes in.
you can follow Big Kimo on instagram @ big_kimo_sumo
this whole event was absolutely amazing, i'm still so hyped that i actually got to see sumo wrestling in person, and i'm already looking forward to the next one in March! i'm probably going to blab about a few more matches tbh, there were a lot of moments that really struck me. so stay tuned for more of my shitty screenshots and rambling commentary, i guess. do i know what i'm talking about? not really. but that's not gonna shut me up <3 one thing i do know: sumo is cool as hell.
once again, much love to these amazing athletes. i hope to see more of both of them in the future!

Back on my previous job for one weekend.
Two weeks ago I got a call by my old head nurse at the organisation I used to manage the events for. She was crying hysterically and told me that they had a massive event last weekend.
Its the local championships for people in the area, everyone could compete in multiple sports:
-6.2 miles Crosscountry run
-Horse jumping
-Mountainbiking
-BMX
-Judo
-Volleyball
-Swimming (multiple distances)
and a few more less risk sports
The three women who had taken up my job couldnt get it arranged and that she suddenly got the lead. "Just see how you do it, now its your problem".
So I rushed over to her house after work and asked her if she had the documents I used to work with. So I could see what already had been arranged by them. What did they do: just an inventory on the events where medics were needed, but that was all. No medics contacted and no equipment and logistics.
I still know a lot of people in that world and a few people who need to return a favor. So we started calling the people on our lists. She contacted the other nurses and I contacted the people who needed to return a favor and others that might be able to help.
I told her to not worry anymore and just be there on the start of the weekend with the other nurses (3) and the few medics (4) she could gather.
So last weekend was the start of two days full of events. I told my nurse to be there at 10am, While I was already there at 8am to brief with the people I had gathered and to arrange some last minutes things.
When they got there at 10am she couldnt believe how many event medics and equipment I had managed to get at the starting site.
-13 miles Crosscountry run
*6 medics
*2 nurses
*2 Electric crossmotor teams
*1 ATV Team
-Horse jumping
*4 medics
*1 nurse
*1 doctor
*1 Ambulance
-Mountainbiking (100miles)
*2 medics on an ATV
*3 electric crossmotor teams
*2 ambulances at the starting point and finish
-BMX
-4 medics
-Judo
*2 medics
-Volleyball
*4 medics
*1 physical therapist
-Swimming (multiple distances)
*4 lifeguards
*2 doctors
*1 physical therapist
Extra's:
-Fully operational field hospital with sleeping stations for the doctors, nurses and other people who stayed the night.

RONDA ROUSEY’S STORY: THROUGH MY FATHER’S EYES (2016)
GENRE : DOCUMENTARY
Written and directed by the former ex-international boxing champion Gary Stretch, the documentary tells the story of Ronda Rousey, the first female UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) champion of the world. The film isn’t perfect, the lighting is often off, the music is cheesy and the interviews may seem kind of amateurish sometimes, but it remains very moving and is the only film about Ronda. Known for being a very feminine and attractive woman, the film goes deeper than just showing a beautiful girl that can throw a punch. It portrays a very smart, determined and hard-working athlete that made her name in a male-dominated field and certainly didn’t have it easy growing up. Her first breath was a struggle to survive, as Ronda was born with her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. For a split second, Ronda stopped breathing, but her will to survive made her fight for her life. The incident was so impactful that for six years, Ronda couldn’t speak properly. Only her sister understood her mumbled words. She became a very frustrated, self-deprecating girl, who was in her own little world and could only depend on herself.
When she was only eight, her father, whom she was very close to, committed suicide. Indeed, he found out he had a fatal degenerative disease that was going to weaken him to death, and didn’t want his three daughters to see him weak. At the same time, Ronda took up judo and was noticeably better than the other girls. She developed her own style and her mother took her to an all-Armenian men mixed martial arts gym, where she got tougher and tougher. She learned from the best and trained with bigger and stronger men than her. At only 21, she won a bronze medal in the Olympics in judo, came back, struggled with homelessness, started MMA at a time when Dana White, the UFC President said no women will ever fight in his MMA organization. Two years later, he made Ronda the main event at her first pro UFC fight. She won within 50 seconds with her famous arm-bar.
The documentary is very intimate and touching, but still inspiring, because we really dig deep to understand how Ronda finds her mental strength and sense of discipline. The film was available on Netflix until recently, but can still be found on streaming websites.
