Day 4 of our Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Featured Author Interviews, continuing with Jinx!
Jinx author of Elsinore: After Hamlet
Once upon a time, a prince avenged his father’s death. If only he could have foreseen his own.
The year is 2021—or maybe 1602? Hamlet the Younger has just tragically died and Fortinbras the Younger, King of Norway and newly-conquered Denmark, has a lot of cleaning up to do. Elsinore: After Hamlet is a text-based interactive fiction exploration of William Shakespeare's Hamlet as a plague text and a reckoning of Asian American identity during these trying times. Also contains bad puns and glowing text.
Read more about Elsinore: After Hamlet here.

Jinx is also the author of The Harrowed and the Hushed and Rougi.
[INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT UNDER THE CUT!]
Q1. Hello! Could you tell us a little bit about to yourself and your project?
Hi! I’m Jinx (she/her), longtime listener and first time caller, writer, and lover of the cute and the gothic.
I’ve always loved writing and first got into interactive fiction during the first lockdowns in 2020. I fell in love with the medium and it’s been such a wonderful adventure since. My first project, Elsinore: After Hamlet, deals with a lot of the frustration and uncertainty I felt during that time as an Asian American with the rug pulled from under all of us. I’m currently working on The Harrowed and the Hushed, a low fantasy murder mystery set in Victorian London, and Rougi, a social intrigue mystery about a cursed ballet in Belle Époque Paris. I really enjoy working with illusions, intrigue, and how we can find ourselves in the strange and monstrous.
Q2. What inspired your current project?
My current projects, The Harrowed and the Hushed and Rougi, are rooted in my undying love of the late 19th century and gothic literature – I love me a good dramatic mystery too, which I’m sure comes as a surprise to absolutely no one. H&H draws a lot from the genre of sensation fiction, which aims to elicit physical reactions in its readers with sensationalized, page-turner plots. The genre traditionally deals very heavily with metaphors of social and identity anxieties, which also made it a very natural source of inspiration for me since those are themes that I really love exploring with my writing. H&H is essentially a love letter to a lot of things I adore, garnished with references to Gothic, Romantic, and Decadent literature, plus my own cultural spin on things. (If you were wondering if some of my characters were named in homage…the answer is probably yes.)
Rougi, which was my entry to interact-if’s January game jam, really came from me looking at color theory and running with it. Based on the “red herring” theme, I knew I wanted to do something with a very strong aesthetic component, so I went back to my bunhead roots and turned it up to the max. I love ballet and as a former dancer, I felt like drama backstage and onstage was the perfect backdrop for a mix of possibly supernatural, definitely interpersonal intrigue. Also, Art Nouveau is so gorgeous and I wanted to write about pretty things (possibly with ugly insides wink-wonk).
Elsinore: After Hamlet is my very first IF project and a real testament to the tangled state of mind I experienced for the bulk of 2021. That spring was so chaotic – lots of sleepless nights and worries gnawing at me from the inside out. E:AH originally started as a final project for a class on medicine and literature, and very quickly became a surprisingly intimate way for me to create some kind of catharsis while the world seemed to fall apart. (Shoutout to the professor who was very chill with me submitting literal plague doctor memes for class discussion, she made Zoom U much better.) I am a self-professed Shakespeare nerd, and looking at one of my favorite plays through a very personal, emotional lens was such an intense experience. I didn’t expect that the development process would break me out of the apathy I’d fallen into at all, let alone so fiercely, but it was a welcome change from feeling scared and dissociated almost constantly.
Q3. Do you pull from your own identity for inspiration? How has that been reflected in your work?
My identity definitely influences how I approach narratives. E:AH was a direct product of the stress I felt juggling my responsibilities as a student, pressure from the pandemic, and my fears as an Asian American woman in a space that became incredibly hostile and unstable. It’s really a slice of how I was experiencing life at the time, and I hope that resonates with players and gets them thinking. For Asian players, I hope that E:AH is a cathartic experience; for non-Asian players, I hope that it shares a different, impactful perspective.
As a kid, I really fixated on the few instances of Asian representation I found in media, so as a creator now, it’s incredibly empowering to be able to include characters who reflect my own experiences and hopefully connect with my audience too. Decentralizing whiteness, particularly in traditionally eurocentric narratives, is very hard-baked into what I create. On a lighter note, food as a love language is also a big cultural influence on my writing and that definitely shows, haha. I’m a huge foodie IRL as well, so coupled with my synesthesia, my writing definitely falls heavily on the sensory side.
Q4. What are you most excited about your project?
E:AH is deeply personal and combines two of my greatest passions (Shakespeare and ~ being melodramatic ~), so while it’s a little scary to have something so near and dear to me out on the internet, I’m absolutely blown away by the response it’s received so far. I’m super excited to see how the playing experience changes (for me personally and in general) over time – I can already foresee it becoming a little like a diary entry preserved online.
As for the two projects I’m currently working on, I am so excited to see how players react to the twists and turns I’m writing into Rougi. I was a little overambitious when planning it out for the January game jam I crafted it for, so I can’t wait to flesh it out fully. Rougi is also my first project written in Sugarcube, so the transition has definitely been a learning journey and I’m excited to show off what I’ve learned.
With The Harrowed and the Hushed, I think I’m most excited about sharing all the lore I’ve built up. Fantasy is the first genre I fell in love with, so getting to create and share my own magical vision is really, really cool.
Q5. What has your experience writing an IF and with the IF community been like?
My introduction to IF came during a lot of turmoil, and the community has been so friendly and supportive. It’s been a blast diving into all these amazing projects and meeting lots of wonderful people! Learning to code has been fun frustrating a very unique and rewarding journey, and it’s seriously such a fantastic feeling to see all the pieces – drafting, Twine-wrangling, writing, UI building – fit together to make a final product. I’m so thankful that my experience with the community so far has led me to make very dear friends and interact with kind and thoughtful readers.
Q7. What piece of advice would you give to fellow creators?
*Shia Laboeuf voice* JUST DO IT. No, but seriously: your story is uniquely yours and there is no one better to tell it. Storytelling is such an intrinsic part of human history and I think it’s one of the most beautiful records of our presence and our world. Despite the obstacles and frustration that comes with being a creator, there’s nothing like the satisfaction of fulfilling that scene you’ve been dying to write, or finally nailing the code you’ve been struggling with. Take care of yourself, and always remember the excitement and passion that led you to where you are now. I’m rooting for you!
That, and don’t code or debug when you’re sleepy. The bug will still be there (unfortunately) after you sleep, and you run far less risk of falling asleep at your computer and waking up to several pages of random characters in the middle of your stylesheet or having to hunt down every time you misspelled a variable…I may or may not be speaking from personal experience.

Humanities Council is a friend of Natchez
Tumblr media
By Roscoe Barnes III
The theme song for the NBC show, “Golden Girls,” begins with the words, “Thank you for being a friend. Travel down the road and back again. Your heart is true, you're a pal and a confidant.”
As corny as these words may seem, they express the gratitude that I have for Mississippi Humanities Council and its contributions to Natchez. The council has been a friend, but even more, it has been an essential partner to Natchez, helping us to grow as we strive to tell our full history.
The council has provided many opportunities for our institutions to succeed in their areas of expertise. These institutions are telling stories, providing lectures, having dialogue, and discovering history that is preserved, presented, and publicized throughout the year. This is all being done, in part, by the resources provided by the council.
The success is no surprise when you consider the council’s mission, which is to “create opportunities for Mississippians to learn about themselves and the larger world and enrich communities through civil conversations about their history and culture.”
Just recently, the council and its board members paid a visit to Natchez for a two-day retreat. They met on Thursday and Friday, June 8 and 9, at Historic Natchez Foundation. During their stay, they conducted business and dined at local restaurants. They also toured some of our historical sites, such as Melrose, Rhythm Night Club Memorial Museum, and the Dr. John Banks House, where they held a reception.
Over the years, Dr. Stuart Rockoff, the council’s executive director, and his team have been staunch supporters of Historic Natchez Foundation, Natchez Historical Society, Visit Natchez, and Natchez National Historical Park. They also support the annual Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration. But that isn’t all. In 2021 and 2022, the council approved six grants for three of our museums.
Here's a list of other things the council has done over the last two years in its support of Natchez:
* In August 2021, John Spann, the council’s program and outreach officer, came to Natchez and spent the day meeting with the staff of Visit Natchez and directors of three museums: Rhythm Night Club Memorial Museum, Dr. John Bowman Banks Museum, and the Natchez Museum of African American History and Culture.
* Spann returned in July 2022 to lead a symposium on the subject of “Freedom.” The event drew a large audience.
* In May 2022, the council, along with Visit Mississippi, approved our application to have Natchez listed on the Mississippi Freedom Trail and the U.S. Civil Rights Trail.
* In October 2022, Rockoff spoke at the monthly meeting of the Natchez Historical Society, where he gave a talk on the Jewish history of Mississippi.
* In 2022, the council brought the traveling Smithsonian exhibit “Voices & Votes: Democracy in America” to Co-Lin in Natchez.
* The council also provides support through its Speakers Bureau, of which our very own Jeremy Houston and Galen Mark LaFrancis are members.
This list does not include the webinars, Zoom calls, and phone calls the council used to provide guidance on grant funding.
As noted on its website, the council is “a private nonprofit corporation funded by Congress through the National Endowment for the Humanities to provide public programs in traditional liberal arts disciplines to serve nonprofit groups in Mississippi.”
By supporting us in our efforts to promote the humanities here in southwest Mississippi, the council is doing what it does best, which is exactly what it was created to do.
In the book of Proverbs, we’re told, “There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (ESV). Mississippi Humanities Council, I’m happy to say, has been and continues to be such a friend.

I randomly came across your post about arthdal chronicles whump and decided to binge watch it because who doesn’t love pretty men suffering and I’m literally obsessed with the show. I binged it in like 3 days and then immediately rewatched it again. Can’t wait for season 2!! Do you have any more whump show recs specifically related to being an outcast?
It's so good, right? I binged it really quickly as well when I first watched! Hopefully season 2 is released sooner rather than later. Though I keep seeing rumors that they're changing the actors (I hope not).
I have a few recs. While all of these don't necessarily have the same case of "outcast" as Arthdal Chronicles, they do have some level of being cast aside, shunned, or mistreated for one reason or another.
Are you interested in Chinese wuxias? A lot of them use the outcast/shunning themes, & they are often whump heavy. But they are also very long (& sometimes a bit draggy).
Chinese wuxias: Fighter of Destiny (2017) - ML abandoned as a baby, plagued with an incurable disease. ... my whump list *(though there's more whump then what I wrote on my list, I just note the "heavier" whumps, if you know what I mean)
Fights Break Sphere (2018) - ML is a genius child who suddenly looses his powers - which is a big thing in his world - so he is then shunned by the people who used to praise him. ... my whump list (*ditto)
Handsome Siblings (2020) - ML's are twins, separated when babies. One is abandoned, but is found & raised by a group of villains, the other grows up in a palace. They are unwittingly pitted against each other once grown. ... my whump list*, whumpily-ever-after's list
Love and Redemption (2020) - ML is punished for breaking the rules of his sect, is outcast & forced to wear something that will eventually kill him should he continue breaking the rules. Simultaneously he is hiding his heritage in a world that would hunt him down should the truth be known. ... I have a list, but I haven't posted it yet. So here's love-me-a-lotta-whump, & whumpetywhump
The Untamed (2019) - (censored adaption of BL - jic that's not your thing) ML doesn't agree with how certain sects/casts are treated, or how certain cultivation/powers is banned/used. He is shunned & hunted, along w/those he tries to protect, for his beliefs & use of powers. ... I have a list, but I haven't posted it yet. I don't think I've come across anyone else's whump lists yet, but here's some gif-sets from knights-in-whumperland
S.Korean shows: Gu Family Book (2013) - ML is half-human half-"demon", when he learns of his heritage he has to keep his newfound powers under control (which he has trouble doing) or risk being hunted as a monster. ... my whump list, & whumpetywhump's list
Lovers of the Red Sky (2021) - ML is blinded when young. He makes a living well enough when he's older, but he becomes possessed by an evil spirit, which he has to fight against & try to hide lest he be hunted & imprisoned or put to death. ... I have a list, but I haven't posted it yet, so here's love-me-a-lotta-whump's list
Introverted Boss (2017) - (the only "modern" show on this list) not really an outcast, but ML has a social anxiety disorder and keeps to himself. As a boss of a major company, his mannerisms cause his employees to misunderstand him & avoid him. ... my whump list*, & I haven't come across any other list for this yet.
That's all I can think of for now.. Hope this helps! 😄

Photography
Illustration - Untitled Cartoon, Saul Steinberg.
Tumblr media
Steinberg, S. (1946). Untitled Cartoon [woman writing under water]. University of Georgia Libraries.
I thought this illustration was interesting but simple. It captures a woman in the bath writing under the water, which takes a humorous turn in the illustration. But also because many illustrations and the form of drawing first then digitally drawing them (present day illustration)
Printing - What is Print Making ?

Photography - Book: Photography Fifth Edition : A Cultural History
Tumblr media
Warien, M, W. (2021). Photography Fifth Edition : A Cultural History. Laurence King Publishing.
I thought this book would be relevant as it it discusses the invention of photography, photography as a form of art, imaging of the social world, photography and its modernity, through the lens of culture etc.
Typography Book - Thinking with Type, Ellen Lupton

Tumblr media
Hererra, A. (2001). Almost Home [digital art, born digital, contemporary, technology] . Dia.
This collage, the twin posts serve as duality that contrasts with eachother than complimentary, such as life and death, positive and negative, good and evil etc. The artists invites us to "become a player" of these fundamentals.

Anico, M., & Peralta, E. (2009). Heritage and Identity. Routledge.
This book explores the ever complex ways in how our heritage or cultural background plays a huge role in how we represent ourselves.
It quotes, "Heritage is more than a simple legacy from the past, and incorporates all elements, past and present, that have the ability to represent particular identities in the public sphere."
Personal Identity - The Concept of Personal Identity, article
Rieber, S. (1988). The Concept of Personal Identity. Vol. 58, No. 3. pp. 581-594. https://doi.org/10.2307/2653757
I quite liked this article as it gave a detailed and succinct insight into what exactly personal identity is and how we define it.
Memory/Nostalgia - The Persistence of Memory, Salvador Dali, 1931
Tumblr media
Dali, S. (1931). The Persistence of Memory. The Museum of Modern Art: Painting and Sculpture.
This was an interesting art piece to look at. There are symbols or time, motifs and themes within the painting that emphasizes memories are strong and although time fades, its hard to forget.
Expression/Emotion - Gender and Emotion Expression: A Developmental Contextual Perspective, article
Chaplin, M, T. (2015). Gender and Emotion Expression: A Developmental Contextual Perspective. 10.1177/1754073914544408
As I was doing a bit of research around emotion, I found that there was a distinct difference in how males and females show or not show their emotions.
Childhood - Childhood growth and socioeconomic outcomes in early adulthood evidence from the inter-war United States, Article
Roberts, E., Helgertz, J., Warren, R, J. (2022). Childhood growth and socioeconomic outcomes in early adulthood evidence from the inter-war United States. VOL. 28, NO. 2, 229–255. https://doi.org/10.1080/1081602X.2022.2034658

This article explores the identity of south asians in NZ and that South asians may feel they are "hybridised" with kiwi. Although, this article focuses on South Asians and I am east asian, I thought there were points within this article that discussed interesting points that I could relate to.
Sustainable Fashion - The True Cost, Documentary

I liked how unlike articles, biographies, thorugh a youtube video and an artist profile of Tyrone Ohia, it gives you more insight into what kind of person he is, through the much more expressed tone of voice, way of speaking etc,.
Ayesha Green - Webpage
Ayesha Green. (n.d.). Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki. https://www.aucklandartgallery.com/explore-art-and-ideas/artist/11265/ayesha-green

Death, grief, and survivor’s guilt
Best Features
The atmospheric descriptions of life in Chicago. The narration provides sensory details about the geography, the locations, and the types of inhabitants. It paints a picture but doesn’t go overboard.
Alter as a main character. He’s proactive, three-dimensional and receives a lot of character development.
Alter’s romantic subplot. The tension, banter, and arguments between Alter and his endgame partner made their interactions entertaining to read.
Raziel, Frankie and Mrs. Brenner as supporting characters. They all have memorable personalities, entertaining dynamics with Alter, and contribute to the plot.
A well-written mystery. Every clue and new lead answers questions and builds up a motive but still keeps the reader wondering until all is revealed.
The well-developed themes. The hard lives of immigrants in America and the pressure to assimilate into American culture. The shame and fear of being open with one’s sexuality because of homophobia. The need to avoid prosecution as a Jewish person with so much unapologetic antisemitism in the world. The author never wastes an opportunity to show how these factors affect the lives and worldview of his characters.
The dybbuk as an antagonist. Yakov’s dybbuk was a constant source of torment and misery for Alter. It did a great job of raising dramatic tension in several parts of the story. Decoding Yakov’s unfinished business through a supernatural entity was riveting.
Worst/Least Appealing Features
The dybbuk takes its sweet time making its first appearance in the story. There is plenty of foreshadowing and buildup but it takes awhile to actually show up.
You might find the lead up to the climax to be a little too long.
Favorite Spoiler-free Quotes:
But you can’t look toward the future when you’re carrying ghosts upon your back.
We’ll never be equals in their eyes. They can grit their teeth and tolerate us, but they’ll never welcome us into their white cities, because ambition becomes something ugly when it has a Jewish face.
“Life was not some never-ending tragedy. Just as for every bitter herb there was sweet charoset, hope and joy persisted alongside suffering. And even someone like me had the ability to change things.”

Artists and Art Pieces are Nature Interpreters
Nature, the land, the sky, animals, the weather, plants, and water surrounds us, inspires, and influences our actions. Many artists draw inspiration from nature, use nature as their medium, use nature to create a theme in their work, and use it to help them develop a deeper understanding of the world and themselves (Iwinski, 2021). We consume art every single day, on our phones, the radio, in books, on the television, seeing art pieces in public, and more. Everyone enjoys art in some form or another, I enjoy television, photography, and music. How do you enjoy art? Art, just like nature, is important to spiritual and mental well-being, it promotes engagement with your surroundings which can help with overall well-being (Mental Health, 2019). As we are starting to understand the link between art and nature, and the powerful impact they have on society it is now important to introduce how interpretation plays a role.
Just like those who interpret the environment, some interpret art. Whether it be ancient or modern art pieces they help viewers understand the message the artist is trying to convey or to understand the elements of a piece and how they interact, regardless of the artist's intent (Lin). However, regarding art about nature, I also believe that the artists and the art pieces themselves are the interpreters and that an additional interpreter (tour guide) is not required. When artists are depicting nature in their work they are trying to capture the beauty of an extraordinary moment in a singular painting, photograph, or 3-minute song. They are interpreting nature without using words, or without using pictures, and yet they have mastered the ability to convey emotion, knowledge, and intrigue into their pieces. The question that prompted this week's blog post was “Who are you to interpret nature through art?” This is a bit confusing at first glance, but what I think it’s saying is, how can you interpret nature through art, because the artist and the art itself are the interpreters, so what use is there for another interpreter. And what I love that is unique about art being the interpreter is that everyone’s interests and needs are met. Whether they are visual, kinesthetic, or auditory learners everyone can find an art form that they understand best and receive the most benefits from (Beck et al., 2018).
Speaking of beauty, how do you interpret “the gift of beauty”? In my opinion, beauty is subjective and everyone perceives, interprets, and finds beauty in different places. I love nature, specifically wildlife photography. The way they can capture the beauty of animals, their environment, their emotions, and how they live is just mesmerizing and something I would spend all day looking at. My favourite Canadian photographer is Jason Leo Bantle because he can capture the beauty of Canada through wildlife photography. He and his images give you insights into nature that you otherwise would not be able to experience, and is interpreting the wild parts of nature to the public.
Tumblr media
Not wildlife photography, but photography of animals is so beautiful to me. This is a picture of my Quarter horse gelding. Taken my Seafind Photography, rights owned by Julia Pridmore.
Interpretation and art are interesting topics that I feel many people have different opinions on. I would like to note that, unlike other blog posts, I’ve made I did not talk about myself and how I am an interpreter because I don’t view myself as an artist, I like to take photos on my phone and occasionally paint with friends but to me, this does not make me an artist. I love to engage, appreciate, and view art and that is why I talked more about the view experience and interpretation vs being the interpreter.

The World’s Biggest Carnival- Economic & Social Impact of Durga Puja.
Durga puja, the biggest carnival in the world and declared as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, in 2021, is the perfect amalgamation of what Kolkata and Bengal stands for; a socio-cultural melting pot, where people from different demographics, irrespective of their religious beliefs, ethnicity, education or fiscal abilities, come together to participate in the festivities.
It symbolizes the triumph of good vs evil and commemorates the victory of goddess Durga over the demon king Mahishasura. Celebrated over 5 days, Durga puja is also the richest carnival in the world. According to estimates, the economic impact of these celebrations was worth over Rs. 30,000 crores (approximately USD$ 4bn) before the pandemic struck. This year one can expect revenge celebrations, with people flocking out in greater numbers to make up for lost ground due to the pandemic.
Tumblr media
What makes Durga puja such a massive event?
While rituals remain as the corner stone, social interactions are what makes this such a remarkable event. The food, décor and most important, the sheer grandeur of the deity can take one’s breath away.
Food: From road side eateries to 5 star hotels, the variety and quality of food is simply amazing. Bengal loves its food and eateries conduct brisk business throughout the night, keeping revelers well fed, as they move from one location to another.
Decor: Stunning pandals and lighting are a sight to behold, with a number of themes based on social issues or events witnessed over the past year. The artistry of local craftsmen and women are unmatched and globally acknowledged.
Majesty of the Deity: Artists create the goddesses with their hands using clay from the bed of the river Ganges and its tributary the river Hooghly. There are two key locations in Kolkata, namely Kumartoli and Potua Para where these idols are created. Both are a tourist attraction, especially in the months leading up to the festive season.
The unsung superstars of Durga puja are the law enforcement officers. Working tirelessly and managing crowds of several hundred thousand every day, these uniformed men and women ensure that nothing untoward happens. They are the true spirit of Durga puja.
Durga puja is special, there is nothing like it in the world.
It is simply a celebration of life.
Spread the holiday cheer by sharing thought about friends on w-e.care.

Spring’s style answer to this notably pandemic-induced conundrum is a boy-meets-girl mixture of structured blazer and fluid dress. At Altuzarra, it looked significantly straightforward, in tonal shades of berry; at Louis Vuitton, things had been a little more theatrical but the premise was equally comfort-driven. Of course, you would forgo the costume, as advised by Saint Laurent, where Anthony Vaccarello paired precision tailoring with sheer tights or physique stockings.
