[Spoilers for Fire Island (2022)]
Some of my favorite pride and prejudice adaptation choices from the movie Fire Island:
I mean the Bennets as queer found family is everything to me. it’s absolutely everything to me i think every iconic family from the literary classics should be adapted to the modern era as queer found family actually
Mrs. Bennet as an ostentatious and over-the-top but ultimately well-meaning and loving lesbian mother figure is so fucking inspired and Margaret Cho as this version of Mrs. Bennet??? they had their third eye wide fucking open with that casting choice [E: OH also how the Bennets’ struggle with wealth/social standing turned into Margaret Cho’s character having to sell their house on Fire Island! I thought that was such a fun and smart decision especially in the evolution of that storyline and how it impacted the character arcs in particular!]
The choice to adapt the Bennets publically embarrassing themselves at various dances as getting overly drunk and puking on everything was hilarious and tonally on point (and also as someone who had to act as the sober and sane one at a party of too-drunk people just last week way too timely lol)
i think when doing a modern-day adaptation of a jane austen novel it’s really easy to flatten or oversimplify the nuances of the social and class commentary built into those stories but mapping the complexity of p&p’s social hierarchy onto the gay subculture of the Fire Island’s Pines party and exploring the intersection of gayness with class, race, and body dysmorphia ended up fitting the spirit of the book so well, it was such a brilliant choice your MIND mr. joel kim booster!!!
Moreover those already existing themes of social/class commentary being integrated so seamlessly into Noah and Howie’s (Lizzie and Jane’s) experiences as queer Asian Americans, how that strengthens their relationship with each other and how that experience has impacted the way they interact with the world and protect themselves from societal pressures in such different ways (Noah being more outspoken to mask his own set of insecurities, Howie being more withdrawn but still having his own brand of quiet strength, etc.) and how that is deconstructed through their parallel character arcs - and the layers of Will (Darcy) being a queer Asian American (specifically of mixed heritage amidst a social circle of mostly white affluent men - the way in which Noah assumes he fits into that world but the subtle ways the movie challenges and breaks down that assumption to show that Will feels out of place in that world too) as well!!! If I had the braincells to scream about this for another ten thousand words i absolutely would
The way they kept Will writing Noah the letter for plot reasons that made sense - he remembered that Noah’s phone wasn’t working from one throwaway comment about how he’s the only one in the group who doesn’t have a phone! Will is exactly the kind of socially awkward but thoughtful nerd who feels more comfortable expressing himself through the written word! - made me SWOON i cannot believe they kept that in a way that worked SO WELL in such a ROMANTIC WAY!!!
Also just. Everything about Conrad Ricamora as Will/Mr. Darcy. can i say that’s a favorite adaptation choice of mine bc it absolutely is. Matthew Mcfayden and Colin Firth whomst i only know Will “saw his crush and immediately threw his ice cream cone into a bush and bolted away” lastname

(This lovely poster is the handiwork of our wonderful host @sazanes!!)
Welcome to our second edition of the King Liam Appreciation Week!! Just like last year, we are holding it around the time of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, which is on April 18th.
It's been 6 years since we were first introduced to the younger brother of the "Prince" LI from RoE, and he's been capturing the minds and hearts of many Choices players ever since! Whether it's for his romantic sensibilities, his compassion, his vast knowledge of both his country and the world, or his charm and diplomacy - he is a favourite among many Choices players.
As Liam is an avid lover of History and especially of monuments and heritage sites, we continue to hold this event around 18th April! This event will happen over 5 days - from April 17th to 21st. The themes for the days are as follows:
Day 1 - April 17th - Character Appreciation/Throwback
Day 2 - April 18th - King/Historian
Day 3- April 19th - Foodie/Baklava
Day 4 - April 20th - Childhood/Family
Day 5 - April 21st - Friendships/Relationships/AU
Keep in mind that you don't have to send the content on the exact day of the theme - if you give it a little later as well, it's still fine as long as you tag the piece with the day it was meant for (#KLAW Day 1, #KLAW Day 2, etc).
Any content is welcome! Fanfic, fanart, edits, moodboards, meta, interactive media, headcanons, character appreciation... anything! As long as it celebrates Liam as a character, focuses on him and shows positive depictions of him. We also accept WIPs and a specific day (Throwback) is set aside for past pieces on Liam. If you like, you can even tell us about the process of creating that piece (here's an ask list for throwback pieces if you have doubts!).
Make sure you tag @kingliamappreciationweek in your posts, as well as the hosts @lizzybeth1986 and @sazanes in your content so we don't miss it! It would also make it easier to track if you use the tags #kingliamappreciationweek and #KLAW in your posts as an extra precaution.
For inspiration, take a look at our KLAW 2022 Masterlist! It's got some brilliant pieces!!
Various fan content blogs have helped in promoting our weeks and also run great events on a weekly/monthly basis. We would definitely love for our participants to check them out in case they'd like to be part of those too: @choicesficwriterscreations, @choicesmonthlychallenge, @choicespride, @choicesprompts, @choicesholidays, @wip-wipeout-weekend, @moodmusicmonday.
Once the week is officially over, we will keep a bonus week for participants who have trouble sending content during the week itself.
We have over a month to get ready for KLAW, and we're super excited to see what our fellow Liam fans might have in store! See you all in April!!
✅✅signal boosts will be highly appreciated!!✅✅

Humanities Council is a friend of Natchez
Tumblr media
By Roscoe Barnes III
The theme song for the NBC show, “Golden Girls,” begins with the words, “Thank you for being a friend. Travel down the road and back again. Your heart is true, you're a pal and a confidant.”
As corny as these words may seem, they express the gratitude that I have for Mississippi Humanities Council and its contributions to Natchez. The council has been a friend, but even more, it has been an essential partner to Natchez, helping us to grow as we strive to tell our full history.
The council has provided many opportunities for our institutions to succeed in their areas of expertise. These institutions are telling stories, providing lectures, having dialogue, and discovering history that is preserved, presented, and publicized throughout the year. This is all being done, in part, by the resources provided by the council.
The success is no surprise when you consider the council’s mission, which is to “create opportunities for Mississippians to learn about themselves and the larger world and enrich communities through civil conversations about their history and culture.”
Just recently, the council and its board members paid a visit to Natchez for a two-day retreat. They met on Thursday and Friday, June 8 and 9, at Historic Natchez Foundation. During their stay, they conducted business and dined at local restaurants. They also toured some of our historical sites, such as Melrose, Rhythm Night Club Memorial Museum, and the Dr. John Banks House, where they held a reception.
Over the years, Dr. Stuart Rockoff, the council’s executive director, and his team have been staunch supporters of Historic Natchez Foundation, Natchez Historical Society, Visit Natchez, and Natchez National Historical Park. They also support the annual Natchez Literary and Cinema Celebration. But that isn’t all. In 2021 and 2022, the council approved six grants for three of our museums.
Here's a list of other things the council has done over the last two years in its support of Natchez:
* In August 2021, John Spann, the council’s program and outreach officer, came to Natchez and spent the day meeting with the staff of Visit Natchez and directors of three museums: Rhythm Night Club Memorial Museum, Dr. John Bowman Banks Museum, and the Natchez Museum of African American History and Culture.
* Spann returned in July 2022 to lead a symposium on the subject of “Freedom.” The event drew a large audience.
* In May 2022, the council, along with Visit Mississippi, approved our application to have Natchez listed on the Mississippi Freedom Trail and the U.S. Civil Rights Trail.
* In October 2022, Rockoff spoke at the monthly meeting of the Natchez Historical Society, where he gave a talk on the Jewish history of Mississippi.
* In 2022, the council brought the traveling Smithsonian exhibit “Voices & Votes: Democracy in America” to Co-Lin in Natchez.
* The council also provides support through its Speakers Bureau, of which our very own Jeremy Houston and Galen Mark LaFrancis are members.
This list does not include the webinars, Zoom calls, and phone calls the council used to provide guidance on grant funding.
As noted on its website, the council is “a private nonprofit corporation funded by Congress through the National Endowment for the Humanities to provide public programs in traditional liberal arts disciplines to serve nonprofit groups in Mississippi.”
By supporting us in our efforts to promote the humanities here in southwest Mississippi, the council is doing what it does best, which is exactly what it was created to do.
In the book of Proverbs, we’re told, “There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (ESV). Mississippi Humanities Council, I’m happy to say, has been and continues to be such a friend.

Discovering art, history and craftmanship

The European Heritage Days... What a great idea !
Looking for what to do on Saturday morning... What a stupid idea !
Finding something to visit during the European Heritage days at the last minute is an arduous task. The more popular exhibitions are overbooked, the fun animations are full and the visits of all the great monuments are reserved since more than a month ago !
The Frida Kahlo exhibition : unavailable. A visit of the Élysée Palace : unavailable. A watchmaking workshop at the Omega boutique : obviously unavailable. So my mission was to find a plan B to program a great cultural week-end. Let me share my discoveries with you...
First step, Saturday afternoon : after checking all the most attractive events and being rejected, I found out that the town hall of the 9th arrondissement was organising activities around craftsmen and nature. Great, I love craftsmanship !
Another stupid idea, once again, I forgot that craftsmanship isn't always about creators and manual arts... So here I am, between a honey maker and a cider seller. Actually, they had transformed the town hall into a small farm, aka “how to explain the countryside to townspeople who have never seen a sheep”.
Second try, Sunday was full of better decisions : the day began with a virtual escape game around the “Grand Palais éphémère” and the “Champ de Mars”. This experience was culturally interesting, you could learn a lot about the different monuments around you and about art history (the theme of the game). The story was about a work of art which hid a mysterious secret linked with the “Grand Palais éphémère”, it was really pleasant to learn while enjoying Parisian architecture on a sunny day.
After that, we went to the “Invalides” where the army museum is located. Here you could meet illustrators, writers and many specialists of world wars and the army. Marie-Laure Buisson, for example, traveled around the world, sometimes to dangerous countries to meet brave women and write their stories in her book “Fighting Women”. We had a fascinating discussion about her story and I can't wait to tell you more about her book in a future article.
In the end, in the central court of the monument, some craftsmen such as a stonecutter and a slate roofer were demonstrating their work and sharing their techniques in the restauration field. We had the opportunity to learn how to carve slate so I was finally happy about what I experienced on this day. I learned about history, art, culture and crafts and I don't need more to feel satisfied. I can say that I highly recommand to participate to the European heritage days even if you didn't book anything exciting at first glance.

One Year at Tanjung Pengelih
Happy One Year at Tanjung Pengelih by Batamfast
1st December 2022 was a memorable day for Batamfast.
A milestone was reached when the first ferry trip sailed from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal to Tanjung Pengelih Ferry Terminal. As promised, the ride was smooth and fast, and it felt surreal to tackle this journey anew, unlocking a not-so-new entry point to Johor. Batamfast is indeed staying true to its mission to connect coastal communities.
Visitors from Singapore used to go this way via small bum boats. Risky but adds to the charm and the adventure, as they say. But now that we have an international ferry service, it is a relief to those who need to travel back and forth.
Tanjung Pengelih Ferry Terminal exudes a rustic and familiar vibe. In actuality, it sits in rich history.
Tanjung Pengelih is in Pengerang, and a historical British Military Operation Fortress during World War II. This is where the Pengerang battery sits, being a part of Singapore’s defence –defending Singapore from sea attacks in the 1930s. It is located at the southeastern tip of the Malaysian Peninsula and the entrance of the Straits of Johor, east of Pulau Tekong and Changi.
Today, it is the haven for laidback relaxation and adventure, with food being the highlight of any visitor’s adventure.
Here are only a few of the locations and activities that you must try:
Sungai Rengit (四弯岛) is famous for awesome local food –with excellent choices for lobster and
other seafood delicacies. You can also find the popular ostrich farm here.
Kota Tinggi is the home of the amazing Firefly Park and offers solid hiking spots,
including the Kota Tinggi waterfall.
Desaru is known for its beaches, theme parks, golf resorts, hotels, and local tours. These
locations offer distinctive family activities, cycling itineraries, and heritage sites that are readily available all year round.
This route is now considered a popular alternative to travel between Singapore – Johor without the constant worry about traffic jams. The sea journey is about 45 minutes only, maximizing your time and allowing you to plan better.
Today, we celebrate one year. While the ferry schedule is still limited, we are encouraging everyone to try and pay Pengerang a visit via this ferry route. Traveling here feels like a warm hug on a cold summer night.
Take this opportunity to explore and get into the vibe. For a limited time, Batamfast is offering special rates for those who will book via mobile app or web and other fun surprises. Do check their official social media accounts (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok) for announcements.

Let's reaffirm our commitment to the theme of the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent: recognition, justice, and development.
Every August 31st, the world comes together through the UN International Day for People of African Descent to honor the shared heritage, diverse culture, and profound influence of Africans and the global African diaspora. This day also serves as an opportunity to raise global awareness about the challenges of systemic racism, discrimination, and exclusion faced by individuals of African descent worldwide.
In December 2022, President Biden issued an executive order to create the President’s Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement in the United States. In June 2022, I appointed Desirée Cormier Smith as the inaugural Special Representative for Racial Equity and Justice at the State Department. Since then, she has diligently coordinated the Department’s efforts to combat global anti-Black racism and advance the human rights of individuals from marginalized racial, ethnic, and Indigenous communities worldwide through our foreign policy.
On this day, we reaffirm our commitment to the theme of the UN International Decade for People of African Descent: recognition, justice, and development.

Making the cut
When joining the MA online illustration course, in the practice 1 module we were tasked to do an introductory project of sorts, a way to get to know us if you will. The task was to create artwork out of paper; however, we are unable to draw or paint on the paper, but I could be any colour. We were given 2 weeks to complete the project, so I decided to get to work.
I had heard of art being created out of paper in the past, more specifically the term known as ‘psaligraphy’ which is the art of cutting silhouettes, typically out of paper (Collins, 2022). I had come across this after seeing examples of Karen Bit Vejle work, as well as the more widely known art of paper folding known as ‘origami’ originating from Japan, the word Origami literally translating to: folded paper (Megahed, 2017).
The art of paper cutting is believed to have originated from China as that is where paper was invented, although it has played such as role in Chinas history, due to the lack of the newer generation carrying on this traditionit has been included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists (ANON, n.d.), giving us an idea to the importance of this tradition in China. Paper cutting seems to have made a presence in many places in the world ever since the invention of paper, such examples being papel picado in Mexico and Scherenschnitte in Germany. Paper is not only being used for art but for emergency shelters by architect Shigeru Ban (Saval, 2018) who has made several shelters out of paper tubes (Emergency Shelters Made From Paper, 2013), showing papers versatility.
The use of paper as the main medium was foreign territory for me as I am so used to creating art on paper, not with paper, but I was more excited than anything and began looking at several paper artists for inspiration in order make this project a lot less intimidating. I found many artists to look at such as Malin Koort who creates fun and interesting characters with paper and Margaret Scrinkl who’s work I found quite enjoyable to look at and found that when looking at the way she uses paper made me more inclined to cut paper without fearing of making a mistake
I found Scrinkl’s work to be the most intriguing, their way to be able to make an almost humble and everyday material such as paper look exciting and fresh intrigued me. Her work is easily digestible to view and process to anyone looking at it, but it isn’t boring. I decided to take inspiration from her work and apply to my own attempt. I chose to take much inspiration from Scrinkl’s method of working as she uses paper in many of her works, particularly her non-animated flat works were quite approachable and simple for a total beginner. So I set out to work.
Tumblr media
Trick or Treat (Scrinkl 2022)
Due to the project being set in October I decided to go with a Halloween themed work of ghosts floating in a cemetery. I would say for a first attempt I was unusually pleased with myself and believe that maybe because I created this with my mindset of learning rather than wanting to create the best piece in the world and I found myself in a better and happier mindset after finishing the project. Drake and her colleagues found in their study that not only did creating works of art to distract improve mood but their participants found that after consistent days of drawing their score on a life satisfaction scale was higher than before they began the experiment (Drake, et al., 2016).
Tumblr media
Ghost Party (Brown 2022)
When I first began my journey to become an illustrator I believed that the only way to create art was to take paint, pen or pencil to paper, however the longer I continue this journey the more I am exposed to the world of art as a whole and how diverse it is and the ways and mediums artist decided to use to show their creativity.
Through the project I have realised that I am capable of showing my creativity in other mediums other than pen, although paper cutting is quite tedious and time consuming I do believe it helps me think outside of the box as I do have a tendency to live in my sketchbook.
This type of art has sparked my interest and I do believe I will continue to apply it to my practice especially when I find myself stuck for ideas.

Month of coming ‘Full Circle.’
Month of Dreams/Bring dreams before Him (Psalms 127:2)
Torah portions of Kislev are full of dreams (Genesis 28-44)
Shine as lights of the world (Matthew 5:14-16 & Philippians 2:12-16)
Stand fast like the Maccabees (Zechariah 4:6 & Philippians  4:1)
TIME TO STAND AGAINST EMPIRES AND CULTURES (Ephesians 6:12)
Pull bow back with the Right Arm of the Lord (Isaiah 53:1)
The month of Kislev in Hebrew is spelled “Chaf Samach Lamed Vav”. Breaking it down into syllables ‘Chaf Samach or Kis’ comes from the word meaning ‘to cover or conceal’. Lev has several meanings; one meaning is ‘His or to Him’. Another meaning from the Hebrew spelled Lamed Vav which has a numerical value 36 (lamed is 30, vav is 6) is associated with ‘revelation’. This is important because we can see how Yeshua was concealed or hidden in the Old Testament but, was revealed in the New Testament. We can very well put it as “HIM WHO HAS BEEN REVEALED”. Yeshua, Jesus, was revealed to us and shined a light in the midst of our darkness. The letter ‘Samekh or Samach’ also means to lean upon or support. Jesus is the one who we can lean on. He is our support. He has given hope and rest where we had none, and we can depend and trust in Him, putting ALL of our cares on Him. Psalms 55:22 says; “Put your cares on the Lord, and he will be your support; he will not let the upright man be moved”. (1965 Bible in Basic English Version) Psalms 56:3; “Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in you” (KJV2000). 1 Peter 5:7 tells us; “Casting all your care upon him; for he cares for you” (KJV2000). These are but a few examples in Scriptures that speaks clearly on putting ALL of our concerns, troubles, worries and cares on Yeshua. He will and does take care of us if we truly trust Him. He wants us to remember that He is our light in the midst of darkness. He shines a light to our path so we can walk confidently through this month where the days grow darker.
During this month there are two prominent holidays. Hanukkah, celebrated by Jews and Christmas, celebrated by Christians. They are both very important.
As I explained in part two of this message, Hanukkah, meaning ‘Feast of Lights’, was a feast that began in the year 167 B.C. rededicating the temple and the miracle of the oil burning ever so brightly for eight days when it was supposed to last a day.
For Christians, Christmas is all about the miracle of the birth of the savior, “The Light of The World”, Yeshua, Jesus the Messiah. He was born, rejected by his own, crucified and resurrected on the third day, victorious, defeating death and our enemy once and for all. Yeshua did this so we can walk in freedom and stand victorious. Isaiah 54: 17 tells us: “no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the LORD”.
It’s during this month of the dark nights of Kislev that the Lord, Adonai Yeshua shines brightly through the constellation of Sagittarius. In the heavens Sagittarius looks like an archer. The tribe of Benjamin was known as “The Masters of the Art of the Bow”. This is the time that we should ask our Heavenly Father to show us our targets and to teach us how to shoot straight, how to move quickly, and to have the zeal of righteousness. Not giving up even if it means hiding in caves in the day and raiding our enemies at night as the Maccabees did. They did not abandon the altar of the Lord, nor gave up because they were surrounded by their enemies.  They chose to stand and fight and so must we.
Let us become the lampstand that shines ever so bright and God will ensure that we have the oil we need to light up the world. God will light us up. We have entered a season of miracles, of hope, of abundance, if we trust Him and believe Him completely. Just remember, if God brought deliverance to the Maccabees, and gave them the victory, suffering under similar events as we, will He not do the same for us?
As we are already embracing this month of Kislev, that began with the promises of hope, (the rainbow that appears after the rain), and culminates with the lighting of Hanukkah, let us have the courage to trust, no matter what storms, no matter how dark it gets. Yeshua Jesus is with us, the one that always encourages and gives us hope… and especially in the seasons of darkness!
May we all be blessed in this month and their after.

Be part of the Reading Mountains Festival!
Tumblr media
Fiction, poetry, art, photography, philosophy, history – the landscape of Alpine literature and culture is incredibly diverse and vibrant. The Alpine Convention, an international treaty between the eight Alpine countries and the European Union for the sustainable development and protection of the Alps, pays tribute to the Alpine imagination every year with the Reading Mountains Festival.
In 2022, the Festival enters its eighth edition, which will be a very special one as it takes place in the framework of the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development. We therefore have a unique opportunity to increase awareness of the importance of this topic!
The sustainable development focus is further reflected in the theme of this year's International Mountain Day, and, hence, the Reading Mountains Festival: "Women move mountains". This is a chance to celebrate the women who are so integral to mountain societies around the world. You are welcome to organise a cultural or literary event dedicated to this topic, or any other topic relevant to the Alps or other mountain ecosystems around the world, for the 2022 Reading Mountains Festival.
If you have never been part of the Festival, we warmly invite you to join in and organise or attend an event that celebrates Alpine cultural heritage. This could take the form of a film screening, lecture, poetry reading, art installation, a guided hike – or any other format you think of. Help organise an experience that showcases the creative, the imaginative, the emotional – and maybe even the confusing – aspects of Alpine literature.
We invite you to celebrate the unique Alpine cultural heritage in this special year of sustainable mountain development. Join in from the Alps (or beyond) and help showcase the importance of the conservation and sustainable use of mountain ecosystems and celebrate mountains around the world. If you are interested, register here to be part of the Reading Mountains Festival!
The Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention supports in the promotion of Reading Mountains events on social media as well as with posters, bookmarks, and other promotional materials (registration must be completed by 30 November 2022 to receive these materials).

Kolkata Durga puja pandal enlivens with 'Tandav'
Tumblr media
Sep 29, 2022 06:40 IST Kolkata (West Bengal) , September 29 (AF): The Hazra Park Durgotsab Puja Committee in Kolkata is in its 80 years. This year, the theme of the Durga puja celebrations is 'Tandav'.
Tumblr media
Notably, the puja was started 80 years ago by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The Hazra Park Durgotsab Puja Committee pandal also became unique this year as it installed a braille board to facilitate the visually-impaired pandal hoppers.
Tumblr media
Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim inaugurated the puja pandal on Wednesday.
Tumblr media
Speaking to ANI, West Bengal Agriculture Minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, who is associated with the puja said, "The puja was started by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose eighty years ago. This year, the theme is the current turbulent situation around the world-- be it natural disasters or protests or riots. There is a war in Ukraine. The pandal articulates the present situation as there is a 'Tandav' around the world."
Tumblr media
Sayan Deb Chatterjee, Secretary of Hazra Park Durgotsab Committee said, "We encounter some sort of 'Tandav' in daily life. The mandap reflects the 'Tandav' of humankind as well as nature. Our theme is seeking respite and peace from 'Tandav'. Even in news, we only see Tandav. Due to massive industrialisation, we do Tandav with the environment as a result nature also does Tandav."
Tumblr media
West Bengal government has increased the grant for the Durga Puja organising committees in the state from Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 this year. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also declared a holiday period from September 30 to October 10 for Durga puja. Durga Puja is considered to be one of the biggest festivals around the world. UNESCO on December 15 inscribed "Durga Puja in Kolkata" on the "Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity". This year makes it more special as UNESCO has inscribed Durga Puja in UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and it is the first Indian festival to do so. The Hindu festival of Durga Puja, also known as Durgotsava or Sharodotsava, is a yearly celebration that honours the Hindu goddess Durga and commemorates her victory over Mahishasur. To destroy Mahishasura, Goddess Druga appeared from the fusion of all the gods' energies in heaven. She had ten arms, and on each of them, she carried the most lethal weapon belonging to each God. All of Goddess Durga's weapons are sanctified during this time. Over the years, Durga puja has become an inseparable part of Indian culture with innumerable people celebrating this festival in their own unique way while pertaining to tradition. Hindu mythology holds that the goddess comes to her earthly abode at this time to bless her devotees. For the Bengali community, Durga Puja is the biggest festival. This year Maha Shashti falls on October 1 and Vijaya Dashami on October 5. The significance of Durga Puja goes beyond religion and is revered as the celebration of compassion, brotherhood, humanity, art and culture. From the reverberation of 'dhaak' and new clothes to delicious food, there remains a merry-go-round mood during these days. In other parts of the country, during the nine-day Navratri festival, devotees worship Maa Durga's nine incarnations in order to obtain her blessings. There is a goddess manifestation linked with each day of Navratri. During these nine days, people maintain ritualistic fasts, recite shlokas dedicated to each goddess, wear new clothing, offer bhog, and clean their homes. In their prayers, they ask the goddess for her favour in order to have prosperous, joyous and fulfilled lives. (AF) Read the full article

Day 1 of the Indian Printers Summit 2022 – resilience & optimism
Tumblr media
The Indian Printers Summit 2022, Wan-Ifra’s much-awaited annual event in India for business and technology managers, began on 14 September with an air of optimism, staying true to this year’s theme, ‘Back to business – Print for the Future.’
The two-day conference, which is being held at Radisson Blu Plaza Delhi Airport, was an in-person event that centered on the new challenges and opportunities for the print media industry in a post-Covid world that has largely shifted to digital during the pandemic.
‘Print is not dead yet, long live print’ was the general refrain of the speakers and delegates, who felt that the decent attendance – coupled with the fact that the event was held physically after a hiatus – were proof enough that the medium was here to stay, and how.
The print media was one of the worst-hit industries during the Covid-19 pandemic with circulation and revenue plummeting to unprecedented levels, editions being shut down and employees being laid off en masse. But as the economy opens up and the advertisers loosen their purse strings, there is a sense of optimism seen among the attendees.
In his inaugural address, KN Shanth Kumar, director, of The Printers Mysore (publishers of the dailies' Deccan Herald and Prajavani and several other publications), and member of the board of Wan-Ifra, said the strong response to the event overrode all the initial apprehension about the conference when the planning began eight or nine months ago.
The print news media is not done yet!
Kumar, while admitting the rise of digital, said the print media was not done yet because it was slowly but gradually coming back to normal, despite the challenges of newsprint prices, and circulation and revenue declines. “Things are looking up, ads are back and the results are encouraging,” Kumar said, adding it was time to take stock, adapt to the new realities, and plan for the future.
Welcoming the delegates, Adrian Haack, director, Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Delhi, dwelt at length about the changing and reducing attention patterns of news consumers, the debate on which is better – social or classical media – the importance of fact-checking in an era of fake news, and the nuances of language in shaping opinions; drawing the example of the war in Ukraine.
Mohit Jain, board member and executive director, Bennet Coleman, and Co, in his opening keynote, and Partha Sinha, president (Response) of the same group, harped on the credibility, heritage, legacy, recall value, strong content, and personal touch of print media vis a vis digital, saying these factors would ensure the survival of the medium and draw advertisers again.
Jain, who is also the INS president and a board member of Wan-Infra, said the new business cohorts and unicorns hold a great opportunity for the print media that can and should find ways and means to collaborate with these rising segments. “Just as TV didn’t kill radio and OTT didn’t kill cinema, digital cannot kill print,” he said.
Tumblr media
The addresses were followed by a roundtable on the theme, ‘Post pandemic revival and the ensuing business opportunities,’ during which Suresh Balakrishna, chief revenue officer of The Hindu, Harrish M Bhatia, president, ad sales, DB Corp, and Varghese Chandy, vice-president, marketing and advertising sales, DB Corp, spoke about the organic slowdown of print before Covid, its revival, the loss and gain of advertisers, and how print can stay relevant and profitable amid the changing dynamics of business and content as well the trust and legacy factors.
All three participants were unanimous in their positive outlook for the print media industry given that business was back to 2019 levels and was looking ahead to growth. They spoke about the need to target the new generation that grew up with digital and educate them about the USPs of print as well as look out for new sets of local and non-traditional advertisers.
Balakrishna concluded the session with a word of caution over what he called the over-hype of digital, and called for a balance, saying the print media was still the bread, butter, and everything for the big and legacy publishing houses – which says a lot about its relevance.
The day 1 session, which was attended by CEOs, managing directors, technical directors, production heads, plant managers, prepress managers, and other senior news publishing leaders, ended with the recognition of the numerous International Color Quality Club (ICQC) winners from India who seem to have now surpassed Germany as the country with most publications admitted to these honors acknowledging their prowess in color news media production.
