From top: Wild ginger (Asarum canadense), also known as Canadian snakeroot; Philadelphia fleabane (Erigeron philadelphicus), a lovely spring aster deserving of a more dignified name; white wood violet (Viola sororia albiflora), a white variation of the common blue violet; woodland phlox (Phlox divaricata), also called wild blue phlox; creeping phlox (Phlox stolonifera), a mountain native and the most delicate and beautiful of Appalachia’s many wonderful phlox species; and Allegheny blackberry (Rubus allegheniensis).

Woodland phlox, Phlox divaricata, that I got at a wildflower sale at a Unitarian church 5 years ago and stuck in this pot. Needs repotting but it keeps blooming and as an extra plus matching the porch!

March 2024: Things Expected & Unexpected
Our order of onion starts arrived from Dixondale:
Tumblr media
Did a little prep work in the garden this week. That orange layer of leaf litter has been down for a couple of weeks but this week I added some of our compost and some lime (We noticed some moss & algae in the bed last year which can be an indication of the soil being too acid):

Seriously, you can make that rich black compost with just lawn clippings, leaf litter & the vegetable waste from your kitchen:

We visited my mom on Sunday. This is a photo of her she shed after a tree limb fell on it:

Mystery plant... possibly a hellebore but we aren't sure at this point:

In this post, I had a photo of a Fallout perk card with a Billy Strings reference stuck on a gas station ice box. Well, someone slapped another perk card with a Billy Strings reference on the same ice box:

Early spring flowers in my yard, plus some garlic that I planted in 2021 and that didn’t sprout at all in 2022, but somehow decided to stage a comeback in 2023
Scilla mischtschenkoana (White squill)
Hyacinthus orientalis (Common hyacinth)
Muscari armeniacum (Grape hyacinth)
Tulips (no idea what species/variety I planted years ago)
Vinca minor (Periwinkle/Myrtle)
Phlox divaricata (Woodland phlox)

Does Woodland Phlox Spread?: The Plants Growing Habits
Does Woodland Phlox Spread?: The Plants Growing Habits
If you’ve come across woodland phlox (Phlox divaricata) while out hiking, you may have been enchanted by its beauty. This perennial wildflower is native to dappled woodlands and meadows in eastern North America. Often used in gardens and landscape designs, this low-growing plant produces delicate, five-petaled flowers in shades of blue, lavender, white, or purple in the early months of spring. It…

Update from the native wildflower beds: the creeping woodland phlox (Phlox stolonifera) is now in full, vigorous bloom. This graceful, shade-loving perennial has a mat-forming habit that makes it an ideal ground cover. The plant's hairy, red-tinged stems, which sport delicate, spoon-shaped leaves, spread freely and need an occasional manicure to keep them from taking over. Also in bloom are the heartleaf foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia) and eastern red columbine (Aquilegia canadensis), whose tall, elegant flowering stalks are producing masses of flowers (it must like the location). The wild geranium is also loaded up with flowers (photos to come).

I wanted to share a picture of my garden that I took yesterday. The blue flowers are phlox divaricata, aka woodland phlox or wild sweet william. It's a local wildflower that I have cultivated in my front flowerbed for years. In the distance you can see a red tulip. The phlox smells wonderful, kind of a sweet, honey-like fragrance. Wild sweet william is special to me because my grandma said she used to pick them when she was a little girl.

Meet Piers!
Tumblr media
Meet Piers! Piers is a Virginian Opossum + White-Eared Opossum trying to start a business where he steals rare items throughout Thirotia for money. He works with Arvin, his roommate, Carrie, an old high-school friend, and Phlox, a young skunk who's just trying to pay for college.
Some lore under the cut!
While I'm still figuring out some of Piers's lore, I do know some stuff. He grew up in Fontveria (a mostly woodland forest biome which, fun fact, is the second most populated land biome in Thirotia) with his family. When he was younger, he learned how to pickpocket and strak very well so he could sell the items and help his parents out, which is how he is so good at thievery today. When he got older, he moved to Thirotia's Capital and became a garbage man. The job paid well, but he didn't like it and thought it was boring, so he decided to start his own free lance business with his roommate to make money instead!
Despite his ability to he sneaky, Piers is actually very energetic and outgoing and, compared to his coworkers, has a relatively positive outlook on life. But, he's not innocent and obviously is willing to do morally questionable things.
Also, those aren't gloves, that's just his fur color. The things above his feet are like shoes, but for animals who climb or have weird long toes, so you'll see a lot of animals like monkeys and squirrels wear them.
