Character Design Thoughts for Shen Yuan & Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky in ‘The Untold Tale’

(This is a Follow Up to This Post)

Hello, @averydrearydiana! Loved reading through your tags! I’m excited that you’re excited! Since I’m also seeing comments on AO3 speculating about how our transmigrators are going to appear as in The Untold Tale, I might as well give my current thoughts and have this archived on tumblr for future reference.

A fun fact about TUT is that a lot of the imagery in the story is inspired by Chinese PVs and popular C-dramas and literature. Since TUT is conceived as a lovestory to SVSSS, one element that I’d wanted to incorporate is playful attempts at satirical genre deconstruction. With that comes with me playfully poking fun at some clichés or things I’ve noticed in Chinese works.

Shen Yuan’s Celestial Design

Before I talk about his mortal appearance, I have to give a lil context about his celestial design in the story. We already know what he looks like as the celestial fortuneteller in TUT’s cover art that I’ve already posted on tumblr. As everyone knows, I was heavily inspired by this Chinese PV:

Among the things I’ve noticed are the fictional characters with white hair. We have a whole subculture of fans liking male character designs with white hair in anime and animation. Taking that a step further, they’ve even shown up in C-dramas, i.e. Teng She from Love and Redemption (technically more blond than platinum white, but shhhhh, just let me have this), Dong Hua Dijun from Eternal Love of Dream aka Three Lives Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms (rest assured, I’m aware of the source material’s controversy, but let’s not get into that here), etc. One of the tags for TUT is Opposites Attract. Luo Binghe’s color coordination is aligned with black and red mostly. Now, visually speaking, what’s the opposite of that?

The yin yang symbol.

Fun fact, besides black vs white, green (SY) is the complementary color of red (LBG) on the color wheel. Now taking everything I’ve said, to take it even one step further, my thought process at the time was, “why not go the extra mile then and just have SY be albino? Within context of the Heavenly Realm, that character design makes sense.” TUT is me subtly riffing off what I can (for the good ol’ meta humor), but making the content come across as a legitimate story experience. As Protagonist A and Protagonist B, LBG and SY have to look visually striking together. With all that said, let’s talk about....

Shen Yuan (Mortal)

I’ll keep some elements of his albinism from his celestial form (light sensitivity and pale skin mostly), but SY’s mortal form is essentially SY pre-transmigration but within context of the xianxia genre.

For his appearance, let’s just keep this Author’s Note^ and TUT’s summary in the back of our brains. This is the fanvid I was originally inspired by for SY’s mortal appearance:

For what he wears, I’m currently feeling very heavily inspired by this PV:

His mortal appearance wouldn’t be considered as “strange” or “otherworldly” compared to the “ethereal fairy-like beauty” SY retains in the Heavenly Realm, but as a side-effect of the 【PROTAGONIST’S HALO】 and his +20 CHARISMA stat, he would still be considered attractive to people even when he takes on a mortal appearance. (Mainly, I like the idea of Bing gē taking large shots of vinegar seeing SY turning heads no matter which appearance SY takes on, and Luo Binghe glaring at these “insects” for even “daring to lay their unworthy eyes on his fated person.” The thought of it just makes me laugh.)

What I mean by how SY’s mortal form being very much based on how SY appeared pre-transmigration but in the xianxia genre context, I mean he’ll have his dark hair (but longer), a “scholarly air” (as a nod to his novelist background), dark eyes, and even his glasses technically (the divine monocle mentioned in ch3, which is also a subtle nod to Sha Po Lang and a riff on men wearing monocles in other Chinese works andit’salsoforeshadowingbutshhhh).

Shen Yuan originally was an author in his forties pre-transmigration, so I like the idea him having a mature air about him in the Cultivation World as well. So for both our Protagonist B’s celestial and mortal appearances, the idea is that you can look at him and immediately recognize him as a protagonist of the danmei setting. My only two prerequisites are that his appearance screams “hello, I’m Protagonist B” and that he appears in “scholarly” attire.

Keeping in mind the original tumblr post where I wrote my thoughts on who I’m transmigrating him as, currently I’m thinking it’s a combination of these two PVs for his mortal form:

As a nod to him being a successful novelist, I wanted him to also appear scholarly. A scholarly crown prince, if you will. For his attire, imagine all the C-drama clothing you’ve seen actors wear in period dramas, and you already have a good idea already of the direction I’m heading down.

As the prince of the cannon fodder emperor, I very much like the idea of Airplane perhaps having a baby face and brown hair (as a small nod to fanon!SQH from SVSSS) but with a great body (a huge source of inspiration are clothing worn by Prince Yu and Prince Jing of the three princes from the C-drama Nirvana in Fire). Since Airplane will also be able to select his Character Creation stats like Shen Yuan had, one thing I’m fairly certain is that he will max out his CONSTITUTION—because “game logic” and not wanting to die. (For those who don’t know, the CON stat in tabletop RPs essentially indicates a person’s overall health, wellbeing, and vigor checks...so him maxing it out is equivalent to him being as invulnerable as a cockroach. A high CON means overall healthiness, which means your character probably is full of energy and vitality, can heal rapidly, and will rarely get sick—if ever. Low CON usually means a higher susceptibility to sickness and disease, wounds that fester and linger, and a general fatigue would haunt you, etc.) Like how SY zeroed in on his CHA, Airplane would have prioritized +20 CON (+5 modifier), especially knowing the fate that’d await him as a prince and the vicious environment that is expected for palace intrigue plots (the harem is a big factor, with concubines and consorts and even the empress sabotaging each other—just to win the favor of one man). Against poison or whatnot which is a cliché in palace intrigue plots, rather than relying on luck, you typically stand a better chance of passing the CON check if you have a high modifier aiding your checks. He’s basically become impervious to illnesses, most poisons (probably being able to spring back quickly), and is considered the healthiest prince in all the mortal imperial line. <- This could be taken both seriously and humorously simultaneously.

Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky (Deity/ Celestial)

For Xiàng Tiān Dà Fēijī’s “actual divine body” that is currently asleep and won’t be awakened until Airplane completes his mortal trial to “regain his cultivation powers,” the face should obviously be similar but, as Xiàng Tiān Dà Fēijī, he would appear regal and dignified as a god of this world:

Imagine something along the lines of mortal Airplane as the man on the right, celestial Shen Yuan in the center, and deity/ celestial Airplane as the man on the left. I envision a respectable appearance that would knock the air out of Mobei jūn and make him recognize Airplane despite any visual dissimilarities, and in a way we have the Four Beauties of China: Luo Binghe, Shen Yuan, Mobei jūn, and Xiàng Tiān Dà Fēijī.

I will say I currently have an idea of making Airplane have “golden” eyes in both his celestial and mortal forms. (Spoiler alert: in my notes, I’d written down to give Airplane yellow eyes as an Easter egg to Yanxi Palace, I believe, where there was an episode where someone of the imperial harem schemed against the empress and almost had the newborn baby killed because that and the yellow skin was an inauspicious omen. We later find out through a timely intervention that the true reason was due to jaundice—because of the diet/ pregnancy cravings she ate for a period of time which resulted in her son’s symptoms. With Airplane’s high CON and another trope I’m bringing in which’ll have to do with the Medicine King’s Valley/ Valley of the Medicine King, his yellow eyes are the only side effect that lingered from that traumatic event which would have killed him had they gotten away with their scheme. A lot of palace dramas have to do with the vicious harem plots, so this would potentially be one such example.) The reason being that this is the identifying marker for MBJ to clue in that they’re the same man he will have loved. And I think that has romantic potential.

Misc.

Now addressing the other tags, yes, essentially speaking, Mobei jūn might just very well experience his very own Big Damn Reunion trope that Bing mèi had suffered from SVSSS. Poor MBJ. He’s in a tumultuous ride of his own with him considering Airplane as his own fated person, hahaha. But for the Moshang dynamic, I want him—a demon—to find himself taken with Airplane in his mortal guise—and subsequently his true celestial appearance once he finds out. I very much also want SY to jokingly snark to his fellow transmigrator-and-writing-colleague about him getting in a relationship with his own “creation” (MBJ). And Airplane would jokingly snark back about SY “ruining his ‘first son’ as well” (LBG). If you can read between the lines of that, then kudos. I’m glad to hear you’re looking forward to the palace intrigue.

I’m especially very happy to hear you’re looking forward to the descriptions! I personally love worldbuilding in the stories I consume I’m an interior designer and realtor irl, so I’m glad my love of house details and landscape, etc shows in TUT. For the pseudohistorical vibe, in the Mortal Realm, I will be referencing the Forbidden City of our Chinese history and a couple popular period C-dramas. Take the settings of period C-dramas like Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace, Yanxi Palace, and Nirvana in Fire as examples for what will be awaiting us when we finally meet Airplane in his mortal body. In the Heavenly Realm, the descriptions will be heavily referencing shows that contain aesthetics such as those of Ashes of Love, Love and Redemption, and Eternal Dream.

Take this with a grain of salt just in case I change my mind later on, but in the chapter when we meet Airplane for the first time, I probably won’t say which character he is in the first scene. I’ll give plenty of hints in the first scene so that you all can make your guesses before the big reveal, but I’m fairly confident you all or most of you will be able to pinpoint who he is among the cannon fodders. We’ll meet the emperor, who is discussing with his sons about the matter regarding the approaching calamity that is Luo Binghe. Then when we transition into the second scene, we’ll know exactly which “royal prince OC” it is that our beloved Airplane has transmigrated into, hahaha.

(*Keep in mind, for everything written above, some details are subject to change. Nothing is official until it appears in the story, or I’ve actually drawn my ideas out and posted online to both my tumblr and twitter. These are just my current thoughts.)

A goal of mine for TUT is to make the story widely accessible, meaning it doesn’t matter if the reader is new to the SVSSS fandom or aren’t familiar with the Easter egg references or meta jokes or subtext or even the Chinese culture, or even if English is not their first language. Having knowledge beforehand might help someone notice more hidden details in TUT, yes, but it is a humble wish of this writer for her esteemed readers to be able to dive into the story and get the enjoyable feeling like they’re reading a genuine danmei novel. It really makes me smile whenever I hear feedback that I am able to emulate that experience.

It had not been that long since you had seen him last. He took his annual vacation the last two weeks of summer break. And you had taken off for the States the month before that. There was a cacophony of hellos and sighs. You knew how the girls felt, you remembered how your heart raced the first time you saw him. Those eyes that could read your inner most thoughts. That smilet hat could melt the snow of a thousand winters’ snow. Those lips that could form words that sounded like a song as he spoke.

“Morning Class.” You stood slightly, bowing in greeting to the students first, and then to Professor Kim. “Morning Professor.”

The initial lecture went on without a hitch, and the sudden intrusion of the bell had you nearly jumping in your seat. Class was dismissed, and you gathered the papers from the long lines of conference tables. You carried them to your desk, shuffling them to make a neat pile. You felt warm breath fan across your bare neck, chills dancing down your spine. You turned around, finding him smiling down at you.

“So, Miss Y/N, ready for another semester?” You grinned cheekily, nodding in response. “Good, good. I must add, you look stunning as usual. The States treated you well, I see.”

“Yes they did. I had a lovely visit with my Auntie and Uncle. How was your trip this year? What exciting adventure did you take this time?”

“I visited Vienna and Norway. You know me, museums and nature.” You laughed, knowing good and well his love of the arts and Mother Nature. You chatted for a few more minutes while the both of you gathered your things. Just as you were about to dismiss yourself, you felt his hand encircle your wrist, turning you to face him. His eyes searched yours, lips trying to form words that never came.

“I will see you later? How about we meet up after your last class and go over the syllabus.” He nodded , his head lowering to the ground as his cheeks blushed a faint shade of rose. You placed your hand over his, telling him goodbye. He watched as you faded from sight, mentally kicking himself for not saying the thoughts that were jumbled in his head. He had to tell you, before it was too late. But he was afraid that it would change the dynamic of your close friendship, and that was something he didn’t want to lose. The meeting came and went, and still he was left speechless. He had to figure something out, and quick.

The next week of lectures sailed by smoothly, even with the occasional lame attempt from frat boy trying to hit on you. Namjoon was always quick to save you from their advances, telling them something akin to regulations and failing class. His chivalry had your heart racing,and your mind swirling. But you knew the repercussions of flirting with a professor, and your future hung on this position.

“Y/N, I need your help tomorrow with the lesson I am giving a live demonstration and I will need your assistance if you don’t mind.” He was sitting at his desk, fingers interlaced behind his head as he leaned back in the seat. “I know your going to think me mad, but I need you to dress, umm, seductively?” He was blushing again, and you could feel your own cheeks heating.

“Okay. I guess I will see you tomorrow. Have a good night Professor.” You hesitate, looking at him with hopeful eyes, wanting his to see what is there without you having to speak it into existence. There is a heavy silence that fills his small office,and the tension is so thick , you can hardly breathe properly. He looked up from his laptop, tilting his head as he studied your features.

“Goodnight. Get home safely.” You left his office, cursing your mind for the images that were popping up. Images of him undressing behind that desk, eyes boring into your soul.

“Fuck” was all you could mutter as the door shut behind you.

The next morning you showered, taking extra time to shave every inch that had unwanted hair. You styled your hair with extra attention to showing of your neck and shoulders. Just as he was about to speak, the students began filing in, and you took a few steps back. You had to force your eyes to divert away from his and greet the students with a smile that was probably wider than it should be. He straighten, saying his usual hellos and other mundane greetings. His voice was an octave lower and harsh, something that took you both by surprise.

As the student took their seats, Namjoon made his way to the podium. He gave you a sly look, then addressed the class.

“Today students, we are going to have a visual demonstration on wanton sexuality. We will discuss how to seduce and enrapture your lover. Eventide – Physion

Eventide make great plugins, from the legendary Blackhole reverb to the equally legendary H3000, H910 Harmonizers and some epic flangers, phasers, reverbs and compressors. Generally, Eventide’s plugins do things other plugins can’t, and ooze with character.

While I could have chosen one of several outstanding plugins, I’ve decided to vaunt Physion with particular gusto. It’s a multi-FX style plugin that boasts a unique Structural Effects processor. By splitting incoming audio into transient and tonal sections, it can work on both using separate effects, chiefly Transient Shaper, Chorus, Delay(s), Phaser, Gate and Reverb. By allowing this independent processing of different parts of the same signal, it’s capable of some fabulous effects on vocals, synths, drums and guitars.

Personally, I love using it on drums, and rarely need to look past the incredible presets. Throw Physion on your drum bus channel and try Sharpening… it’s like a magic trick – suddenly your drums are crisper, tighter, more dynamic and glued tight together.

For those of us that want to get into Role Playing Games (RPGs), but aren’t quite sure how, tabletops tend to be the best place to start. Worlds like Dungeons & Dragons, Mutants & Masterminds, and Shadowrun have inspired and captivated gamers for decades, and show no sign of letting up. In its contents, some of the most celebrated mediums of entertainment have been put to paper and given life to form new stories. Dungeons & Dragons was translated from Lord of the Rings, Mutants & Masterminds was born from the world of comic books, and Shadowrun was built on the foundation of science fiction. Regardless of type, DMing (or Dungeon Mastering) is a great way to build friendships and rediscover old passions. But of course, there’s a few things that need to be known prior to staring, as not every rulebook can teach you what you need to know in those first few days. Sometimes, experience is the best teacher. So I will impart my personal knowledge of what the craft, and hopefully it helps as you develop your own story.

1) THE IDEA: First off, be very aware of the world and scenario you are building. This acts as the core for how the campaign will run, and what can be expected on all sides, both DM (Dungeon Master) and PC (Player Character). Make the world as big and detailed as possible, but keep the focus tight and on the party as they explore the environment you’ve designed. This makes for a massive world that is always changing, and has plenty of variables to play with. Don’t be disappointed if the party doesn’t get to it all. The best campaigns always have something more to explore at the end of each session. • What is the current geopolitical climate? Who is in power in which nations, and how for do their borders go? How for does their influence go? • Which races have been imbued with the power of magic, or possess superhuman abilities? Is it common to have these powers, or are they an anomaly? • What is the recent history of the world? What is the history of the distant past? Does it have a large bearing on what is happening in campaign now? Why or why not?

2) TECHNICALITIES: If you’re having trouble with technical aspects of the game, SRD is a wonderful and free online resource that can help clarify a lot of trouble spots for characters and gameplay (look specifically for the type of game system you’re playing. SRD exists for several platforms: Dungeons & Dragons 3.5, Dungeons & Dragons 5e, Mutants & Masterminds, etc.). While it’s important to keep the idea in focus, it’s also essential that the rules be understood. 3) THE PLAYERS: Meet with your PCs before the game starts. This gets a lot of questions out of the way, and gives you a chance for all to learn from experience. Be prepared to answer questions about your world, your scenario, and expectations for campaign. This sets the tone for your time as a group, and helps the rest of the game run more smoothly. You can form character stats, backstories, and even complex histories in pre-campaign meetings. Always respect each other’s ideas and ready for slight changes in your overall plans. The story is after all, about the Players (PCs), not about the DM (Dungeon Master). You may have crafted the world, but the PCs are the ones who will live in it. • A party of 3-6 is the safest number • Having a healthy diversity of classes and races helps go a long way • Specializing your skillset helps cover weaknesses, and encourages cooperation among players

4) THE STRUCTURE: As the PCs begin exploring your brave new world, it’s important to realize that limitations can go a long way in establishing an interesting campaign. In addition to focusing on the party’s grand quest, have a handful of side quests and tertiary quests in your back pocket. This helps avoid railroading, helps pacing, and makes for a more diverse set of choices for your PCs, and PCs LOVE Choices. Furthermore, the main action of the story should be contained to a location, and maps and visuals help immensely. Having an ocean to the east can establish limits, and may also set up a plot boundary, saying that all of the action and excitement can be found on dry land (or perhaps a few islands, if they’re feeling particularly daring). • The party is trying to repel an invasion of their home nation, but they must possess six artifacts to make the resistance possible. And these artifacts are scattered across the world. • As a result of the king’s rulings, many fiefdoms and provinces have fallen under slavery. It is not the primary focus of campaign, but it can win you some allies, or help find a way to get past an obstacle. • There are several families that have lost their sons the war, and need some help running the family business. Farmers, apothecaries, and even minor nobles are asking for help wherever it may come from. It may not connect to campaign, or even be a side quest, but it can win you some small rewards such as a place to stay for the night, some coin for your journey, or the unveiling of a secret.

5) FAILINGS: As part of Role Playing Games (RPGs), you can do all the preparation in the world, and still come up short as a result of rolling a Nat 1 (Natural 1), or rolling low in general. It’s all part of the fun of playing a game that balances imagination, chance, and strategy. However, one should not roll for perfection or try to become all-powerful. Having a character that can fly to the antagonist’s castle and kill him instantly makes for a very dry campaign and also robs the party of the chance to explore the world as well as themselves. So when you encounter a low stat, or roll low in a fight, don’t think of it as a failure. In RPGs, there’s no such thing as failures, just experience. Think of it as an opportunity. Lower stats make more chances for role-playing, and low rolls in combat can lead to memorable and even hilarious results. And every DM will agree that a pack of misfits at mid-level are more interesting than all-powerful gods taking down dark villains without effort. • Having low strength means you’ll have to be quick on your feet, or quick of tongue. Was this a result of your background, and how does it affect the party? • Just because you weren’t handed everything growing up, does that rob your character of the chance to live a good life? Does this perhaps force them to struggle and fight to get where they are, and does this help them now? • Your character may not be the most approachable figure, but does the vicious barbarian or booking wizard have a card being kept close to the chest? Despite their proficiency, they may be keeping a detail of their past hidden. As a party, can you handle it, and does it make your bond stronger?

6) ROLE PLAYING: As your characters develop their dynamic, you’ll start to see that they’ll find patterns they’re accustomed to. The Fighter may swing their sword, the Wizard may use a handful of spells, or the Rogue may try to steal every object. It’s common for first-time or relatively new players to play a concept, instead of a character. As DM, encourage your PCs to step out of their comfort zones and play their character as a character, not a concept. Some players like to play a figure who is like them in many respects, and then they get to see how they interact in a world not their own. Or in some cases, a player may use a character different from them in every way. The only way they can find out by playing their character. Extended dialogue between players or NPCs (Non-player characters) is a great way to enhance the overall experience and can lead to surprising results. DMs can also reward their PCs by paying them in experience, in-game friendships and allies, or with information. • The shy Rogue must talk himself out of trouble when his shenanigans go too far. • The stoic Ranger who never misses a shot suddenly encounters a Golem, and her weapon of choice is of no use. Will she rely on her party for aid, or adopt a new strategy to save them all? • An NPC was found stealing food from the party. Is he a heartless thief, does he have a starving sister just upriver, or is he being manipulated? The only way to know is to ask.

7) UNPACKING: As you explore the world of campaign, you will find the PCs will be asking numerous questions. As part of your responsibilities as DM, you’ll have to be prepared to answer all questions (although there’s no shame in not knowing if you’re put on the spot). They may ask the identity of NPCs, the significance of an ancient statue, or the history of a town. While it may seem like nitpicking at times, it’s a great opportunity to introduce a memorable character, introduce a new concept, or to show off some of the lore you’ve spun. Every time you encounter something new, be prepared to share succinct and relevant information as you unpack it. Also, don’t forget how experiences have affected characters, or how history can have an effect on current circumstances. In any scenario, never miss out on an opportunity to unpack what’s already there. It saves you time as DM to expand upon what’s there instead of making something entirely new, and it adds dimensions to the story like nothing else will. • You discover that the lone man on the road is a legendary swordsman. What is his name, what exploit made him famous, and who would want to help or harm him if he stays with the party? • You encounter an ancient statue that has been ravaged by pillagers, the elements, and time. Does the statue hold significance for your party members? Is the statue being guarded by an unseen force? Or is walking on this land considered punishable by death among the local residents? • The party comes upon a grand fishing village with a wealthy status that befits a large city. Is it the result of shady business practices? Who’s in charge, and how long has this town known such luxury?

8) EXPERIENCE OVER RULES: With so many rules running through each system, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s really important in the game. New players especially will refer to the rules to ensure everything is sound. But when it comes to DMing, it’s a delicate balance of upholding the rules and finding ways to make your vibrant world come through in a rigid set of rules. The best way to strike a compromise between the two is to build your world first, then apply the rules. With so many written rules for combat, interaction, and difficulty of dice rolling, even professionals and people who wrote the canonized rules can have trouble finding ways to apply them by virtue of how many there are. As DM, your job isn’t to be all-knowing, your job is to be aware of your world, and to apply the rules as needed. • You encounter a troll, and he is about to strike you down. You manage to fall just short of your roll (but his injuries also cause him to lose significant points). • You are being chased by a battalion of knights, and they search relentlessly for you. You hide yourself well among the brush, save for one member of the party, and three knights dismount looking for you. Two of the party succeed (but the one knight fails his search check and the remaining party member goes undetected). • You fight tooth and nail against a vicious creature from another world. 9) CONTRIBUTE & COMPROMISE: After the first few sessions, you’ll realize that players have an enormous amount of influence in how the story plays out. Therefore, it becomes important for the DM to make suggestions, and for the PCs to ask questions. Amid these exchanges, you may have to add new scenarios or make room for interpretation. You will have to compromise. The best way to keep the dynamic healthy is to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard, and that everyone’s opinion is valued. If the PCs want to take up a side quest, respect that. If the PCs want to come at a situation in a new way, but supportive. Part of the fun for you as DM is that you don’t know exactly what’s going to happen. You give as much as you get as DM and PC, so give a lot and compromise a lot on both fronts. • As the PCs travel into a market, they hear rumors about the enemy seeking them out. Therefore, they take up an offer from the Thief Guild to be hidden until the heat dies down (Side Quest). • The party wants to see a dragon. You elect to follow up on some rumors where a dragon egg is on display. You either take up an errand for the nobility in exchange for the egg, or steal it of your own volition. The dragon is then met, but it remains on a power level equal or below the party. • The party ambushed amid a forest. The Ranger is out of arrows, and the Wizard is out of spells. The Fighter still has an axe, and wants to cut down trees to gain the upper hand.

10) RESPECT: There’s a culture of “crushing the PCs” in many Role Playing Games. While it can be fun to put your characters in hot water, or in near-death scenarios, ensure that it’s all in good taste and isn’t done for the sake of cruelty. This can be difficult. Abusing your omnipotence as DM can throw off a healthy dynamic among players, and can color someone’s opinion of the game. It’s rarely out of a sense of maliciousness that these issues arise. In some scenarios, it’s just a joke that’s gone too far. As DM, be very aware of who is getting the most attention, who is the most engaged the most, and who is more resistant to contribute. If needed, ask what is going on directly. If it’s an issue among the party, mention it after the session is over. This makes the time in campaign about campaign, and illustrates respect for your players. Sometimes a joke goes too far, and the player in question is too nervous to bring it up. If you confront this as DM, and do so in a courteous manner, it produces an atmosphere of trust. Without respect or trust, there is no party. Campaign should be, above all else, a safe place to play and have fun. If this isn’t the case, then something needs to change. So whether it’s a joke, overstepping a boundary, or a recurring problem, be sure to address it as soon as possible. Following this rule is paramount, and if it is done in combination with all the other rules above, you’re sure to have a campaign you’ll remember for years to come. • Joke around, but do so with respect • If the DM or a PC is having trouble with the rules, be understanding and patient • Give respect and trust, and you will receive it in return

With these ten guidelines, I hope that you’ve learned a great deal and will find joy in applying them to the games you play. Of course, this is only my interpretation of how to DM, and there is much you can learn from watching others, or doing it on your own. RPGs mean something different for everyone. If you ask 100 DMs what the game means to them, you’re likely to get 100 different answers. But in the end, it all comes down to what you give to it. In time, you will discover what DMing means to you, and even after years of practice, it can still surprise you. So without further ado, break out the soda and snacks, and let’s start DMing!

Episodes followed a formula: the family as typical, going about everyday life to resolve a single issue each airing, and to continue as a happy, ideal family to enjoy (Mitchell, 18). It fit a mold, and perpetuated the ideal white family (there are no characters of color in the show), that didn’t allow for a sense of realism, regardless of if it was set in 1960 or 2060. The show is actually set for a reboot, but with a much more dystopic, sinister feel, perhaps providing a better sense of social realism as the world is more full of trash than flying cars. The original series places a futuristic sugar coat over everything, its visual aesthetic one that lets viewers imagine a bright, wonderful world, yet it ultimately catered a narrow viewpoint of what the future family should look like. Diversity is so clearly important in modern Hollywood, and even today certain audiences struggle to identify with on-screen characters, in both live-action and animated series. While The Simpsons may present a stylized version of humanity, it is argued they promote a more humanized family, where its content and humor work to undermine the traditional un-modern family structure and life to present a more realistic world for viewers.

What will your house design look like once it’s completed?

If one thing’s certain when it comes to designing your dream home, it’s that you will be investing plenty of time and emotion into the project.

Getting the scheme through planning, controlling costs and managing trades on site are just a few of the hurdles that you’ll encounter before completion – so you’d hope that the result will be exactly what you envisioned.

Surprisingly, once finished, many houses differ from the self builder’s original expectations. While any good architect can generate numerous visions of the design possibilities available, it’s vital that they communicate and develop these concepts effectively.

In order to convey their strategy to you, the client, your chosen professional needs to be skilled in terms of how they deliver the initial idea.

Whilst doing a lot of talking, creative gesticulating and pointing is great for a first chat, your designer needs to demonstrate what their plans will look like in reality, using a more objective format.

As an architect, it’s my job to find a suitable way to communicate with clients and make sure they understand everything about the design proposal. I use many different tools and media formats to portray my ideas – this article sets out what you should expect from your chosen designer, so you end up with the house you want.

Conveying the initial concept

When it comes to getting architects’ plans done for your project, one of the key issues is whether it’s best to go for 3D representations of the scheme.

In today’s high-tech environment, you might be surprised that this is still a consideration. When designs were created on a drawing board alone, producing a 3D image was a laborious process, so this element would have come at a cost.

A decade ago, clients were generally happy to see basic plans and elevations of the new house.

This approach can still go a long way to share a visual concept, and a good designer can quickly sketch out the framework of what the dwelling will look like in 3D by hand. But while this representation will be useful, it won’t be fully accurate.

If your plot is flat and there’s little to consider in terms of the context surrounding it, 2D drawings could be an acceptable approach.

With a bit of imagination, you’ll probably be able to see what’s going to be built. You can figure out the layout of your new home and see how you’ll move through the building using floorplans.

But for some people, this strategy can be challenging – especially when it comes to envisioning where the windows are, how big they’ll be and how much natural light will be present.

Elevations (drawings from the side perspective) can help to explain the overall height and fenestration positioning – but a building is never truly a flat surface. Many interesting structures have articulated elevations to add interest and character, which can be difficult to see on a 2D representation of the scheme.

Design in 3D

In the past, I’ve had clients who have found it challenging to absorb what’s being presented by a flat drawing.

As a solution, I have created real models of the proposal to help them visualise what it will look like. Suddenly, they have something tangible to look at in three dimensions, which helps provide a superior understanding of the scheme.

But what if your design aspirations change? It’s unlikely that your architect will keep on producing amended models, taking in your alterations so you can gain a fresh understanding of the new design.

In some cases, this can be the point at which clients start to lose control over what the end product might be.

As I’ve said already, paper sketches can still be an effective way to share ideas for the project. But nowadays, the majority of architectural practices work with a CAD (computer aided design) system.

Any decent professional should be able to create a 3D model of your proposal using one of the many different CAD software packages available.

At Lapd Architects, we use several programs throughout the process to ensure our clients understand what the building will look like.

Programs such as Auto-CAD, Sketchup and Lumion are effective in enabling designers to put forward their ideas and develop readable plans at very detailed levels.

In fact, Sketchup comes with various tools that allow you to jump inside the 3D representation of your project to experience a walk-through before the house is even built.

The Position Camera, for instance, allows you to view your plans from various heights. This device is intended to reflect your eye level and can be adjusted to suit you.

The Look Around tool, on the other hand, allows you to move the camera from side to side and is designed to mirror the action of turning your head from side to side.

Try the Build It 3D home designer

Finally, the Walk facility enables you to move forward and turn in different directions as you go through the 3D mockup of your future home.

We’re currently supporting Build It in the construction of the Build It Education House at the Graven Hill development in Bicester.

We used paper plans, in addition to all of the above design programs, to enable the whole team to understand what the house would look like.

We then created 3D renders in Lumion, which produces high-quality images that can represent various finish options – which can be helpful for clients when it comes to deciding which materials to use.

Can I design my own house?

If you’re keen to put together some preliminary thoughts on the architecture for your home, using a digital design suite can be a worthwhile exercise.

Programs like Sketchup and Build It’s 3D Design Software can provide a functional canvas to experiment with ideas. The images you produce could be a useful starting point for discussions with your architect.

However, it’s vital not to underestimate the value a professional will bring to your scheme – particularly concerning the regulatory requirements that need to be adhered to, plus cost control elements.

It takes at least seven years to complete the training to become an architect – plus many years of experience thereafter. This ensures that professionals can meet the buildability aspects of realising a high-quality plan.

Consider that good design can significantly add to the value of a home, compared to a house that hasn’t been as carefully thought out by a professional. Plus, when your architect does their job well, you’ll get to enjoy the process with a knowledgeable guide by your side rather than trying to tackle the journey alone.

Concept to reality

Whilst paper or electronic drawings are very effective in terms of showing you the design, there’s nothing better than the reality and a full-scale appreciation of your scheme.

If you have a clear site, at the concept design stage you should be able to mark out your proposed layout on the actual plot.

Get your dimensions and use spray paint or string with pegs to lay out the floorplan on the ground. Mark up windows and even put out garden furniture so you can sit in the proposed spaces.

That way, you’ll be able to get an idea of the views and the path of the sun over your finished property. Above all, your architect needs to make sure your accommodation and style needs are incorporated.

I’d suggest that once you have the design, you can then look at the best construction method to suit the proposal – not the other way around. For example, masonry, timber frame, steel frame, SIPs (structural insulated panels) and ICF (insulating concrete formwork) all have their own pros and cons.

One may be more appropriate for your design than another. Fixating on one build method prematurely could impede decisions at the early stages of your project, when you want to be fairly flexible.

Managing the process

To ensure the building works on your plot, I would always recommend that a measured site survey is undertaken. This includes checking levels and identifying where services lie, rather than relying on Ordnance Survey plans.

Having an accurate report ensures that the height and positioning of your proposal is correct. That way, you avoid having to make changes after planning, or worse, going through the process again after discovering that the site is different to what you expected on the drawings.

As you enter the detailed technical design stage, your architect should maintain control of costs, which includes making sure that the structure is constructed in a way your contractor understands (they need to be able to visualise it, too!).

If all the details have been thought through in advance, this removes any complexity for the builder.

This will be reflected in time spent on site, and ultimately, your expenditure for the project. Once on site, your contractor may offer suggestions to save money and time.

However, this is one of the key stages where your design could radically change from the drawings you sent to planning. It may seem like a good idea, and if a strategy is presented to you as a cost-saving approach it could be very tempting.

Before you agree to any alterations I’d suggest that you discuss it with your architect, as modifications at this stage could impact on the design of the house. It’s fair enough for builders to put forward ideas, but in too many instances it may be more in their interests than yours.

Input from your chosen design professional will help you make the correct decision and result in the right design being delivered.

Final thoughts

Your dream home should be exactly what you imagined it would be. Team up with a designer who can deliver not just the wow elements of the design, but clearly express how the proposal will work for you and your family. If you’re unsure, ask your architect or builder – they should take the time to explain things until you’re completely happy.

The new Jaguar XE

The new Jaguar XE delivers an enhanced exterior design, all-new luxurious interior and advanced technologies.

An updated exterior design gives the XE a more purposeful and assertive stance. Psychological suffering. Children are exposed to situations of terror and horror during war – experiences that may leave enduring impacts in posttraumatic stress disorder. This psychological damage will leave children to carry the burden of their war-torn childhoods for the rest of their lives. PTSD is often a corollary of growing up in war, especially in child soldiers. Bayer’s study of former child combatants in Uganda and the Congo shows that the average PTSD rate among those who had been abducted into groups like the Lord’s Resistance Army was 33 percent, compared to kids who had never been abducted at just over eight percent. Even worse, 48 percent of those who had been kept in the army for more than a month, possibly being made to fight or loot villages, had PTSD symptoms. Some studies show rates as high as 82 percent, but the fact remains that war is hugely traumatic for children, especially when they are directly affected.

Children from war-torn backgrounds have a tendency to develop depression as a result of the horrific things they have seen. A study by Vinck in Northern Uganda found that slightly over half of abducted children had moderate to severe depression. Pfeiffer found that 16 percent of kids who were abducted were depressed and, of these, 34 percent were suicidal. For kids kept over a month rates were even higher, with 24 percent of the total group depressed and 37 percent suicidal.

Psychologist Michael Wessells says, “One of the greatest effects I see on a day to day basis is a loss of hope. Once young people feel hopeless, they really do give up. They don’t take steps that might build a constructive future.” This is exemplified by the 60 percent of Rwandan children that have lost all will to create a stable future after the genocide.

On top of this, kids who are exposed to war at a young age are often afraid and more prone to panic attacks, anxiety disorders, bedwetting and nightmares. 2. Physical effects

Death. Hundreds of thousands of children die of direct violence in war each year (2). They die as civilians caught in the violence of war, as combatants directly targeted, or in the course of ethnic cleansing.

Injury. Children suffer a range of war injuries. Certain weapons affect them particularly. A landmine explosion is more likely to kill or seriously injure a child than an adult (3). Thousands of children suffer landmine injuries each year (4).

Disability. Millions of children are disabled by war, many of whom have grossly inadequate access to rehabilitation services. A child may have to wait up to 10 years before having a prosthetic limb fitted. Children who survive landmine blasts rarely receive prostheses that are able to keep up with the continued growth of their limbs.

Illness. Conditions for maintenance of child health deteriorate in war – nutrition, water safety, sanitation, housing, access to health services. There may be loss of immunity to disease vectors with population movement. Refugee children are particularly vulnerable to the deadly combination of malnutrition and infectious illness. There is also interruption of population immunization programs by war which may be responsible for increases in child mortality.

3. Effects on daily life (education, family, environment)

Second, impacts in childhood may adversely affect the life trajectory of children far more than adults. Consider children who lose the opportunity for education during war, children who are forced to move into refugee or displaced person camps, where they wait for years in miserable circumstances for normal life to resume, if it ever does. Consider a child disabled in war; they may, in addition to loss of a limb, sight, or cognitive capacity, lose the opportunity of schooling and of a social life. A girl who is raped may be marginalized by her society and lose the opportunity for marriage. Long after the war has ended, these lives will never attain the potential they had before the impact of war.

Social and cultural losses. Children may lose their community and its culture during war, sometimes having it reconstituted in refugee or diaspora situations.

It doesn’t matter what they read as long as they read and children who learn to love books will be children who grow up to be good readers.

E3 2018: Resident Evil 2 Remake Hands-on Preview: REvitalized

Besides finishing Dark Souls 2 using nothing but a broken spoon, completing Resident Evil 2 in less than 90 minutes, without using first aid sprays or saving my progress, is my greatest video game accomplishment. (That took a lot of practice, but it turns out skipping classes frees up a lot of time.)

I got hands-on time with "RE2make" at E3, and came away more excited than ever. The game isn't the Resident Evil 2 I played obsessively in college. It's the game as I remember it. Let me explain.

Ever since the franchise's heyday, series creator Shinji Mikami has peddled the pronouncement/excuse that the tank controls used in the classic games are supposed to feel awkward because they represent the terror-stricken bumbling we'd all commit on the off-chance a virus caused 99% of the world's population to die and rise again as zombies. As a proponent of those controls, I get where Mikami is coming from, but I still respectfully disagreed. While "push up to move forward no matter which way you're facing" makes sense in a game where every camera angle is predetermined and, thus, will never be oriented exactly as players want it, I sympathized with anyone who found the tank controls and static angles too frustrating to overcome.

My concern going into Resident Evil 2 circa 2019 was that changing the camera from static angles to a behind-the-shoulder view introduced in 2005's Resident Evil 4 would cause a cascade effect of changes. If Leon and Claire can aim in first-person, RE2's slow, shambling, stupid zombies will be too easy to pick off, which means Capcom would likely have to increase their speed to give them a fighting chance, which would introduce more action into the game's slow, creeping tension—and so on. Before you know it, you're left with a reinvention of Resident Evil 2 that plays more like Resident Evil 6.

Terrible, I know.

When I saw Capcom's gameplay trailer at E3 that confirmed an RE4-style camera, I wasn't worried. I was more excited than the G-virus-infected rat (whose name is Kevin, according to various sources) we saw in RE2make's first trailer. At that point, all I wanted was confirmation that the project existed and was proceeding apace. I got it. Later, I wondered. Would RE2make still feel like Resident Evil 2?

Emphatically: Yes.

Resident Evil 2 Remake does away with tank controls for real-time 3D movement. Tilt a stick in a direction, and Leon (Claire was not playable at E3) will head that way, with the camera floating above and behind his shoulder. Yet zombies are still a threat even though you have pixel-perfect aim, because your aim isn't always pixel perfect.

While standing still, Leon's targeting reticule narrows to a fine point, communicating to players that they'll fire with a high degree of accuracy. You can move while aiming and firing, but doing so widens your targeting reticule, dramatically reducing your accuracy. Zombies won't stand still and let you blast them to bits. Land too many headshots, and the game's adaptive AI kicks in, allowing them to move more erratically, such as weaving out of your line of sight and then lunging to grab Leon and take a bite off his health bar. A single zombie now poses a significant threat, while facing down a mob of three or more is optimism at its most foolish.

In this way, RE2make feels awkward and bumbling in a good way, the way I think Mikami intended but couldn't deliver on due to the technology of the time. Implementing fair drawbacks to actions like moving while aiming, as well as zombies that refuse to be cannon fodder, make survival an even greater challenge than it was back in 1998, appealing to diehards, but with the benefit of fluid, intuitive controls that should appeal to casual players who found the old control scheme off-putting.

Resident Evil-style survival is nothing without a good dose of horror, and RE2make is satisfyingly terrifying. Foyers are dilapidated. Corridors are dimly lit, with some flooded from gushing toilets and choked with corpses and debris. RE2make takes place in the Racoon Police Department you know and fear, but with architectural changes that extend organically from the 1998 rendition, much like the additional wings, floors, and courtyards present in 2000's Resident Evil remake. My chest tightened every time I had to press through a darkened hallway. Leon takes out a flashlight to cut through the darkness, and fortunately you can aim—with the handgun, at least; I imagine two-handed weapons such as the shotgun will be a different story—and hold your flashlight at the same time.

The remake sets the scene in more ways than through visuals. Leon's story, remember, is that he's a rookie cop forced to survive a zombie outbreak straight out of a B-horror movie on his first day on the job. Naturally, he's a bit nervous, and the game puts you into his shoes through dynamic comments. He psyches himself up by whispering "You got this" through chattering teeth the first time he sets foot in a dark hallway, and even screamed "Get the fuck off!" when a zombie sank its teeth into my neck.

When Leon sprints, the camera doesn't zoom in and shake as it does in more action-heavy third-person shooters like Gears of War. It pans out to show your character moving at a quick hustle rather than a sprint. Leon isn't Doomguy, able to race across terrain at 30+ miles an hour. He's a rookie. He's scared out of his mind. You may feel like sticking to something until you master it is the best policy, which it sometimes is, but doing the contrary can allow you to reach to the same goal. Discovering something new is, for me, one of the most underappreciated things this world, and, also in my opinion, one of the most beneficial things the world has to offer. Being open minded enough to try something new can open you up to a world of possibilities you may not otherwise experience. There are a number of ways to achieve your goals and is another way to develop character in your playing. In order to stimulate the mind enough so that progression happens quickly, we have to find our limits, balance, and inspirational triggers that keep us interested in the goals we are trying to achieve. Let’s take films for example. I like action movies. But if I saw a film that included a 3-hour fight scene I would get bored, as I would feel that the fighting lost its impact. The same rule applies to food. IF I eat too much of one food type I begin to find that food bland, and distasteful as I would become accustomed to the taste. So, if we do too much of one thing it becomes tedious and no longer stimulating. Therefore, when preparing practices, writing songs, gig set lists or producing music, it is vital that we have enough tricks up our sleeve to deliver the right move for the right occasion. Here are some methods you can try in your musical training that can increase your motivation and prevent boredom.

Changing Style/Genre

The amount of times I hear people tell me they don’t like a style of music because they find it boring is incredible. In particular, classical music is often brought up by people. I will always question people as to why this is as I find it interesting to know. The most common answer I have had to date is, ‘It’s boring’. In some cases, this may be the case. Not every piece of music can be everybody’s cup of tea. However, I am a firm believer that we can all learn something from it, and sometimes this so-called boredom, derives from a lack of understanding. The same as a jazz musician should take influence from the blues, I believe metal musicians, should look to classical music for inspiration, for the benefits it can have on their melodic, harmonic and dynamic ear. This can improve their ability to create ideas for solos, riffs and contrasting phrases. The heritage of any musical genre is a development of something before it. Merging different elements of each genre not only develops us as musicians but also develops our genre. The benefits of this are that you can begin to appreciate the strengths of musicians, expand your awareness, increase technical dexterity, grow your sense of character and make more definitive and creative decisions.

Change the context

You may have a very specific reason behind what you want to do. For example, when I was younger, I wanted to learn to sweep pick, because I had heard the technique used in some Trivium and Avenged Sevenfold songs. It was something I had never practiced in any other type of song. If I had have tried it on broken chords or found other songs that used the song until I had nailed the technique, and then began to build up speed, I may have been able to achieve it. But being stubborn and maybe slightly immature I never managed to achieve this. In hindsight, this is what I would have done, but hindsight is a wonderful thing, so I can only prepare things for my students, which are designed to encourage this kind of independent thought and these methods. Learning skills in a variety of different contexts can also develop a better understanding of the techniques and give them a purpose. Once again this is great for decision making, soloing and adds depth to your musical knowledge and Genre/style, giving you a much more rounded and broad skill set. The more you understand the uses for something, the more likely it is that you will achieve it.

Watch or show other people.

Watching other people playing something can give you a bigger scope of what you need to know. By watching someone do something, you can develop the understanding by asking questions that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to. This can be great for visual learners and also for developing the processes of different tasks. By watching others perform, we can observe the habits and practices that achieve the results we are aiming for in our individual goals. Give your time and effort to these questions and consistently question them to remind you of your progress and the purposes behind the hard work. Generating and creating clarity of your goals are a brilliant way to set your mind straight and stay focussed on working towards them. Set an alarm 3 times a day to make sure you are aware of what your goals are. Write down daily tasks for yourself that work towards them so you can keep track of your progress. Surround yourself in the environments that will help them. When you practice your instrument, set practice routines that will relate to your goals in some way. Write check lists and tick them off. Or keep some sort of spreadsheet that helps you to analyse what areas you need to develop rather than just focussing on your strengths.

It is important to keep the targets achievable and challenging to build both strength and positivity. Don’t see things that you have not yet mastered as being a negative thing, we can’t do everything. But by creating the right environment, mind set and understanding, you can then improve by way of habit, routine, and structured practice. A friend of mine recently said ‘Motivation is nothing, Discipline is everything’. By developing the appropriate habits and working hard to achieve tasks that are related to your goals and aspirations, you are already one step closer to achieving your targets. Anything that can’t be done now, can be improved. That is something you will need to remember when you are practicing.
