Chapters: 4/9 Fandom: Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan Rating: Explicit Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Rand al'Thor/Mat Cauthon, Rand al'Thor/Aviendha/Mat Cauthon/Elayne Trakand Characters: Mat Cauthon, Rand al'Thor, Elayne Trakand, Aviendha (Wheel of Time), Min Farshaw, Thom Merrilin Additional Tags: Canon - Book, AU - Canon Divergence, spoilers through book 11: knife of dreams, Polyamorous Character, Polyamorous Negotiations, aftermath of sexual trauma and rape, no on-screen rape or non-consensual sex, Additional Warnings In Author's Note, spoilers through book 14: a memory of light, my earlier spoiler tag was before i'd realized how far exactly the fic needed to go, in order to feel properly completed Summary: Rand presses on and takes Ebou Dar, pushing the Seanchan back into the sea and discovering someone unexpected in the city.
Their next step — after Rand finally talked things out with Elayne and Aviendha — would be to search out Perrin and find why he hadn’t already returned with Masema. Rand had been fretting over it but hadn’t had any plans to seek Perrin out himself, believing that he needed to keep his focus on the Seanchan. Seemed a bit of nonsense, to Mat’s thoughts. They had these odd color swirls when they thought of each other for a reason. Might as well use them to track Perrin down and find out what was keeping him.
Luckily, Rand did seem at least somewhat willing to listen to Mat’s advice.
It was also easier to wrangle Rand back to Caemlyn than Mat had been expecting — that was due to Lan, in a way. Rand had been startled beyond anything when he’d found out that Lan and Nynaeve had gotten married, and he’d spent almost two hours rambling about it at Mat the night before they’d all gone to Shadar Logoth together. Apparently Lan had told Rand some fool thing after Moiraine had died about doomed men and poisoned love and other such nonsense, and Rand, like a fool, had taken it to heart and decided to live his life that way.
Seeing that Lan had failed to take his own advice had given Rand pause, and made him think again about some of his more ridiculous notions about Elayne and Aviendha. So that was all to the good.

“You can never know everything, and part of what you know is always wrong. Perhaps even the most important part. A portion of wisdom lies in knowing that. A portion of courage lies in going on anyways.”

It's very funny re-reading Winter's Heart with full awareness of the rest of the series.
Five hundred men of the Deathwatch Guards had come off the ships and remained in Ebou Dar for some reason.
Tuon, Mat. It's because Tuon's there.
The ordinary sort of crime expected in any large city had fallen off dramatically under the Seanchan, but the Guards took to patrolling the streets as if they expected cutpurses, bullyboys and maybe fully armed bands of brigands to spring out of the pavement.
Indeed, Mat. I'm sure this increased police activity has nothing at all to do with you meeting the new management last chapter while looking like you'd been attacked in the street (because you were).

And another thing: with Lan and Moiraine's relationship, Jordan crafted an extremely intricate and raw relationship that one could discard because it's platonic, but the moment you see their bond as a marriage, it's just such gut punch after gut punch.
Many quotes after TFoH have a double edge in the way they relate both to Nyn and Mo, his future and past. The crux of the issue is that Moiraine is part of Lan and Lan of Moiraine and the severing could not solely occur because of Mo: it's a marriage; it's complicated.
To me, the story of their relationship disintegration and the aftereffects is one of the most captivating in the books so far. It's honestly a marvel, albeit painful and subdued, but the bond in general captivates me.
Bonding is essentially saying "I am now entrusting you with what could really hurt me, with what could mortally trap me. I trust you not to" which is what committing to someone beloved feels like. It is a marriage, but with a very real "till death do us part" clause.
There is no denying the nature of the bond creates a power imbalance, but also requires a show of trust on both sides, between a group that is notoriously guarded and particularly dangerous warriors. It makes the commitment all the more poignant.
Like handing someone a knife and baring one's chest to them as a way to show dedication.
For that reason, that imbalance comes closer to the relationship between a knight and his lady than a reversed patriarchal twist on marriage.
All the marriage won't be happy or without abuse or deception, but it is a testament to what the parties involved are willing to give, which is fascinating.
And RJ sees it as such, particularly with complicated cases like Elyas, who pretty much separated from his Aes Sedai, Lan, whose Aes Sedai transfered the bond without consent, or Kennit, who is actively hunting his Aes Sedai to kill her because she is BA.
As Stepin observed "No bond is closer than an Aes Sedai and, uh, her Warder. Not husbands and wives, not parents and children."
Very telling that characters like Lan or Rand would be so eager to bond with the ones they love, even after all that happened with their bond-holders.
It is the gravest danger a man can place himself in; the reward must be immeasurable.

More WoT s2 thoughts based on the new pics
The last time I really speculated on anything WoT S2 was ten months ago, so it's very exciting to have new thoughts! So, thoughts based on the new pictures:
The first photo contains a lot of exciting new information: Ishy openly working with the Seanchan! In the book, this was represented as more of a metaphysical tie (as Rand fought against Ishamael in the sky, his battle mimicked the fight going on against the Seanchan on the ground) but Ishy being an ally or aligned with the Seanchan right away is very intriguing (and it makes me wonder: are we sure that Semirhage was one of the figurines represented by the prayer statuettes? Maybe Ishamael is taking over her storyline and we actually are going to get Mesaana in the White Tower; or it could be that the reins on the Seanchan get handed over to Semirhage in future seasons).
I love the Seanchan Look so much. The Teal/Rust color combination works really well for them and their look is just so unlike any of the other looks we've seen in the show. I love how Ishy's collar feels like it's evoking the same ribbed vibes as the Suroth's shoulder-gear. And we have a good look at a Voice here, potentially (since she has no long nails to indicate that she's of the Blood) -- not Alwhin, since she was chosen as Suroth's Voice post-Falme, iirc.
Loial being dressed up behind them is also very intriguing, and I wonder if he's going to be one of the ways that we'll find out more details about how Seanchan culture works through Loial's potential conversations with Suroth. There's so much information in this first still! Very exciting!
The Lan photo doesn't really give us any new information but he Looks Great. <3
The Moiraine photo has some neat things going on: Cairhienin fashion! Implied confirmation that Moiraine & Lan will be with Rand in Cairhien specifically (so my guess is that Verin will be introduced in Perrin's plotline and travel along with him). I love the belt, and we have the high collar for Cairhienin modesty, and the kesiera. It's also a Great Look.
My guesses for Egwene & Nynaeve is that they are both at the White Tower -- Egwene is doing some novice chores while Nynaeve is stripping down (maybe only to her shift and not all the way?) for the test to become Accepted.
The Mat photo is the same view that I think we got of him in the teaser trailer but he looks so sad! I want to give him hugs!
The Rand one is fun because it looks like he's already done his Cairhieinin arc, because that is a very fancy white collar that he has on underneath that cloak. So I think this is him entering Falme (I feel like the background also tracks for that).
Perrin with Aviendha and... I think the guy in the background is Masema? Aviendha is veiled and ready for a fight but Perrin does NOT look ready for a fight at all. Is this also Falme? This isn't when Loial was taken, because I think we saw that moment in the teaser trailer and it looked like it was out in a more rural-ish area, though that might be an angle issue.
People we did not get any hints of: no Elayne! I want my girl! But we also didn't get any hints of Padan Fain, which is intriguing. No Alanna or Min or Siuan this time.
But very exciting! September 1st! So excited to finally have a date!
