A quick winter safety PSA
It’s that time of year folks. If you’re shoveling sidewalks and using ice melt this winter, please remember:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also don’t believe what the package says about being environmentally safe or pet friendly. That’s just marketing. Ice melt is a chemical and it will poison pets, erode infrastructure, and pollute freshwater habitats. We should still use it bc it’s an important winter safety tool. But there’s a right way and a wrong way to do it.

Regular reminder that you can save on your heating bill by papering your windows or covering them with blankets ahead of a winter storm
This’ll also keep heat in if the power goes out

When it's cold I cannot recommend enough soaking your feet in hot water for a few minutes before you go to bed. I just turn the shower/tub faucet on, roll up my pants and remove my socks, then just stick my feet in the hot water for like 2 minutes. If I'm really feeling cold I'll fill the tub up with about an inch or two of water and stick my hands in as well, then just hang out for a while.
I've got Raynaud's Syndrome and have terrible circulation, so if I go to bed with cold feet it takes forever for the rest of my body heat to transfer down and warm up the blankets. I'm just awake and miserable for hours lol. No amount of layers helps, but this has been my go-to trick to sleep well in winter for forever.

Embracing Winter Fitness: Fun and Effective Workouts for Colder Days
As the winter chill sets in and the days become shorter, maintaining an active lifestyle might seem challenging. However, staying active during the colder months is crucial for overall well-being and winter self-care. In this blog post, we'll explore a variety of fun and effective workouts that you can embrace to keep your fitness routine alive during the winter season.
Tumblr media
1. Indoor Cardio Workouts: The Heart-Pumping Warmth
When the temperatures drop, indoor cardio workouts become a fantastic way to elevate your heart rate while staying warm. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts, dancing, and aerobics are excellent options to get your blood flowing and boost your mood. These workouts not only help burn calories but also provide an effective cardiorespiratory workout, keeping your heart and lungs healthy.
To enhance your indoor workout experience, consider creating a cozy ambiance with winter candles. Opt for scents like cinnamon, pine, or vanilla to add a touch of warmth to your exercise space. The flickering flames can create a calming atmosphere, making your indoor workouts a delightful self-care routine.
2. Winter Sports: Embrace the Season's Playground
Winter sports offer a fantastic opportunity to stay active and enjoy the snowy outdoors. Whether it's skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, or snowshoeing, these activities engage multiple muscle groups and provide a full-body workout. Plus, they add an element of adventure and fun to your winter fitness routine.
Before heading out, make sure to bundle up in layers to stay warm. Additionally, consider using essential oils for a pre-activity boost. Peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils, known for their invigorating properties, can be applied topically or diffused to awaken your senses and enhance your winter sports experience.
3. Yoga and Pilates: Gentle Winter Strengthening
For those seeking a more gentle approach to winter fitness, yoga and Pilates are excellent choices. These low-impact workouts focus on strength, flexibility, and mindfulness. You can practice them indoors, making them perfect for colder days when you prefer to stay cozy at home.
Create a tranquil workout space by incorporating essential oils known for relaxation, such as lavender or chamomile. Diffusing these scents can help create a calming atmosphere, making your yoga or Pilates session a winter self-care ritual for both your body and mind.
4. Home Workouts with Online Classes: The Virtual Gym Experience
The rise of online fitness classes has transformed home workouts into a virtual gym experience. Many platforms offer a variety of workouts, from strength training to dance classes, allowing you to choose routines that align with your fitness goals and preferences.
To enhance your home workout space, consider using winter-themed decor and lighting. Soft blankets, plush rugs, and ambient winter candles can create a cozy environment. Choose scents like cedarwood or frankincense to add a touch of warmth and tranquility to your at-home fitness sanctuary.
5. Strength Training: Build Winter Resilience
Strength training is an essential component of any well-rounded fitness routine, and the winter season provides an excellent opportunity to focus on building strength. Whether you use bodyweight exercises, dumbbells, or resistance bands, strength training helps improve muscle tone, boost metabolism, and enhance overall winter wellness.
Incorporate essential oils into your post-strength-training relaxation routine. Oils like lavender and bergamot can be diluted and applied topically, creating a soothing massage experience. This post-workout self-care ritual not only aids in muscle recovery but also promotes relaxation during the winter months.
6. Winter Hiking: Nature's Winter Fitness Retreat
If you're a nature enthusiast, winter hiking is a captivating way to stay active while immersing yourself in the beauty of winter landscapes. Bundle up in warm layers, including thermal socks and waterproof boots, and explore nearby trails covered in snow.
To enhance your winter hiking experience, consider using essential oils with natural bug-repelling properties, such as citronella or tea tree oil. Dilute them with a carrier oil and apply them to exposed skin to ward off insects, ensuring a more comfortable and enjoyable winter hike.
Conclusion: Elevate Your Winter Fitness Experience
Staying active during the colder months is not only essential for physical health but also contributes to winter self-care by uplifting your mood and enhancing overall well-being. Whether you choose high-intensity indoor workouts, winter sports, or calming yoga sessions, the key is to find activities that align with your preferences and keep you motivated.
Create a winter fitness routine that goes beyond physical exercise – make it a holistic experience. Embrace the season by incorporating winter candles, essential oils, and cozy decor into your workout spaces. These additions not only elevate the ambiance but also contribute to a sense of winter wellness, making your fitness routine a self-care ritual that nourishes both your body and soul. Remember, winter is not a time to hibernate but an opportunity to embrace the unique charm of the season while staying active and fit.

Weird Winter Tip: Chickens
Chickens have a high body temp naturally and will want to cuddle when it is cold. If you know someone with properly handled chickens or even pet chickens you can use them to warm a lap quickly. Honestly just having a couple in the room will quickly heat it up.
Yes, I know that this is very niche info, but it works.
Tumblr media
Chicken diapers are a thing (they work like overalls), but you can also loop a plastic bag around their wings to catch poo and surprise eggs. Also the better food that they are given the less their poo smells and it becomes easier to clean.
Tumblr media
For those wondering, this is my pet chicken Little Mamma. She is old and used to being handled so we have had her cuddle us and the other animals through quite a few winter storms.

Get started on that book! There really is something so calming about reading or writing to the sound of rain or the sight of snow. While the world is blanketed in a sheet of white outside, you are in a totally different world in your story.
You can still be productive! While your music is playing, tidy up your home. Do the laundry, wash your dishes, deep clean your room. Because this is a day where you have no plans, you can take your time.
Bake or cook! You know that really good cinnamon roll recipe you found that you've always wanted to bake? Now is the time to do it! If you have the recourses, you can work on improving your cooking and baking skills.
Sleep IN! Sleep in as late as you would like! Or, take extra long naps. You deserve it!
Pamper yourself. Its always a good idea to shower and wash your face regularly. However, every now and then its healthy to go the extra mile. Give yourself a spa day! Make yourself a bubble bath with snacks and wine (if you are of age, of course!). Use this time to take care of yourself, physically.
Journal. If you enjoy writing down your thoughts and feelings, this is the perfect time to do so. The snow brings a certain tranquility that can promote a wondering mind.

Winter Travel Tips
With the ever-changing Pittsburgh weather conditions, it’s a good idea to think like a Boy Scout and “be prepared” when it comes to winter travel.
Preparedness is paramount when it comes to road trips year-round, and hitting the road for a long drive during winter months is no exception.
What to Expect from Winter Travel
With an increased risk of potential driving hazards like sleet, snow, strong winds and frigid temperatures, it’s a good idea to think about ways to ensure you’ll travel safely.
6 Tips to Master Winter Travel
When preparing for your winter road trip:
Invest in an emergency kit for your vehicle. Available at most major retailers, these kits are relatively inexpensive and contain items like flares, booster cables, flashlights, ponchos and first aid supplies for minor injuries.
Develop a contingency plan. Create a strategy for dealing with a flat tire, vehicle accident, dead battery or other potential travel delays. Keep a hard-copy list of people or businesses to contact for help should you need it.
Stay in touch. Check in with a designated contact during your journey with updates on your location, delays encountered or unexpected situations that require longer travel time. When driving, remember always to pull off the road before using your cell phone.
Check the local weather report before heading out. Winter weather can be tricky and forecasts aren’t always accurate. You can double check your destination’s weather history on a variety of websites to determine typical conditions to expect in that area during your travels.
Store warm clothes and blankets in your vehicle. Be prepared to stay warm if you’re stuck for extended periods by keeping a blanket or two in your car. Also, pack a small travel case with snow boots, socks, gloves, a scarf, hat and heavy sweater in case you need to leave your vehicle.
Review your travel route without GPS. Read through detailed driving directions, including alternate routes, know your options. Keep a map handy in case your navigation system is compromised during your trip.
