Durante los años 80 y 90 Winona Ryder supo ser una de las actrices favoritas de Hollywood, además de ser todo un ícono de estilo. Su cara de muñeca de porcelana, su melena corta, labios rojos, jeans y campera de cuero negra y actitud desenfada eran imitados por chicas que querían “rockearla”. La actriz de "Beetlejuice", "El joven manos de tijera", "Mujercitas", "Reality Bites" y "La edad de la inocencia", entre otras, ocupaba mucho espacio tanto en las revistas de espectáculos, como en las del corazón. Desde 1989 hasta 1993, fue la pareja de uno de los actores más deseados del planeta, Johnny Depp, quien se tatuó su nombre en el brazo: “Winona forever”. Nadie imaginó que su carrera caería estrepitosamente, como por un abismo.

El 12 de diciembre de 2001 fue descubierta robando en la lujosa tienda departamental Saks Fifth Avenue, de Beverly Hills. Lo que escondía con disimulo sumaba 4700 mil dólares. Formaba parte de su botín un suave pullover de cashmere con la etiqueta de Marc Jacobs, que costaba 760 dólares. Las cámaras grabaron gran parte de sus movimientos, cargando fundas, que volvía a reacomodar sobre una cartera. Unos empleados aseguraron haberla visto arrancar alarmas, cortar etiquetas con una tijera y meter las prendas en una cartera. En la última etapa del recorrido, al saltearse las cajas, el personal de seguridad fue tras ella para retenerla.

En noviembre de 2002 fue declarada culpable luego de 13 días de juicio público, que le dejaron una herida profunda. Winona recibió una condena de tres años de libertad condicional, 10 mil dólares de multa, terapia psicológica y 480 horas de servicio comunitario, que cumplió en un centro de chicos ciegos y otros enfermos de SIDA.

Winona Laura Horowitz, quien nació un 29 de octubre de 1971 en un rancho de California y fue criada por padres hippies, en una comunidad con otras familias, sin electricidad y cero televisión, lo que la convirtió en una lectora voraz.

Winona tardó más de una década en recuperar su lugar de estrella de Hollywood. Y su regreso triunfal estuvo marcado por la serie "Stranger Things", que le rinde culto al cine fantástico de la década del 80 y que eligió a una de las exitosas figuras de esa década. La actriz volvió a la pantalla, esta vez chica, para brillar en su protagónico. Se trata de su primera serie que la devolvió a lo alto del podio.

La adolescente rebelde y desprejuiciada que representaba en los 80s, ahora ocupa otro rol, el de madre fuerte y protectora, de una persona de cuarenta y largos.
