WIJ Day 5: Who’s your Favorite Whumpee?

(Yes this is late, I had a lot to say ok.)

Ok well I literally can’t pick just one. So here’s a list of my current crop of favorites, which is very long and yet I’m still almost certainly forgetting some:

Bo from The Shop Captive by @deluxewhump

One of the first OC whump stories I ever read and the one that introduced me to Bee’s writing. His despondence is palpable, and the way he clings to the scraps of comfort and moments of kindness he is given is as delicious as the absolutely brutal treatment he faces most of the time. The scene where he’s first getting a bath and all his injuries are exposed?? Top tier whumperflies. And the second bath scene? YES. I also love that he is not a pet whumpee, or any other scenario where he’s used to this and thinks he deserves it. He’s just a normal guy who fucked up, and is stuck in a horrible situation. Seeing him try to just survive through that, what it does to him...beautiful.

Colton from Linden and Colton by @whumpzone

Colton is probably the most dehumanized whumpee I’ve ever read about-and so every little step he makes in his healing journey fills me with so much joy. I love a good “whumpee thinks caretaker is new master” trope and this story is one of my favorite examples of it. If I ordered this list by how many times I’ve reread their chapters, Colton would be at the very top. I love how he’s been through absolute fucking hell, literally broken down and remade, and still, after so much time in darkness, he reaches for the sun. I can’t wait to see him continue to bloom.

Coriander from Lydia and Coriander by @maracujatangerine

Coriander is another whumpee who’s been through so much hell, and yet is still a goddamn sweetheart. It has been so lovely to watch him unfurl from his shell under Lydia’s care, and even show his real self to Linden! The chapter where he buys Lydia a flower, and the one where they go to the lake, are two of my all time favorite moments. This series is like a bright flower in the darkness of the BBU. I love to watch it grow!

Emery from Deserted by @whumpyblogthing

A newcomer who has quickly inserted himself near and dear to my heart. I love his defiance, which is so quickly followed by his despair. I love how he still has hope that Tristan will help him. I love that he has not given up. Can’t wait to see more of him! (Hopefully the future is kind.)

Harrow/San from Captured by @redwingedwhump

This was the first OC whump story I ever read. I distinctly remember starting the series after dinner, planning for just a quick read before bed. I stayed up for 12 more hours after that, devouring every piece of writing about him that had been posted. By the time I finished the sun had set and risen and I had a new obsession. I love Harrow’s defiance, and how that is systematically beaten out of him. The things he goes through are so brutal and chilling, and who he is at the end of that torment is so different than when he started. I’ve loved his recovery arc too, and I’m so happy to see him start to get the comfort he deserves.

Jack (and Joe) from Behavior Modification by @whumpcereal

Yeah these two rock my fucking world every goddamn time. One of the reasons this series hits so hard is because it feels like we’re coming in at the end. Jack has already suffered. He’s worked through it. He met Joe, and they fell in love, and they are so so happy together. And then Jack gets taken. And every piece of progress is methodically and brutally stripped away. And now we get to watch them scramble to make it through and pick up the pieces. Jack thinks so poorly of himself, but he’s truly one of the strongest whumpees out there. I love to see him hurting, but I think I might love to see him healing even more.

And Joe. Oh Joe. Joe is not used to being hurt. The role reversal AU is my #1 guilty pleasure, because even as a whump fan it is hard to see Joe hurt so badly. I swear he has the biggest heart in the whole goddamn world, and it’s so cruel that that love is what is used to hurt him. He and Jack are perfect for each other, and I love watching them care for each other.

Jaime from Do No Harm by @peachy-panic

Pretty sure if you performed heart surgery on me this little fucker would be nestled next to my aorta. He’s just…he’s just Jaime, you know? He’s resilient, and kind, and clever, and still going despite having the whole world stacked against him. He’s so human in his vulnerability, in his desperation when it comes to the surface. I love the small ways he finds to fight back. The big ways he learns to trust. I love all of it, all of him, always.

Kane from Kane & Jim by @whumpsday

I love this wet paper towel of a man. I love how he has truly, really learned from his past. I love how he is so desperate to make up for it. I love how fragile he is at first, how even the slightest scrap of kindness is enough to make him cry. I love watching him rebuild himself into someone that he can grow to actually like. I love his relationship with Jim and I can’t wait to see how his relationship with humanity as a whole progresses. He doesn’t believe it yet, but he is so good.

Kasper from Kas and Alec by @whumpwritings

Listen I am ALWAYS a sucker for the whumpee who is resigned to a life of misery, exploitation, and pain, only for a knight in shining armor caretaker to ride in and rescue them. Kas is so kind, and genuine, and just so fucking undeserving of the lot he’s been given. I love how it’s that genuine personality poking through that draws Alec to him. I love how Alec is instantly like, I have no right to control what you do but I do not want you to be hurt. I love them and I can’t wait to see their relationship progress.

Leo from The Fighter by @hold-him-down

Leo...my fighter :,). He lives rent free in my brain at all time (fighting my demons for me). I am in awe of him. Of how many times he has been beaten down. How many times he gets back up. He has been through so much hell that even when he’s offered safety and comfort, his body and mind both instantly reject it. It is so fulfilling to watch him piece together a semblance of safety (after many a misunderstanding). He’s so vulnerable and yet also so strong. Every time a piece with him comes out I know I’m in for a goddamn rollercoaster of emotions. I want to wrap him in soft blankets and give him warm soup and tell him that Luke is an idiot sometimes but worth his trust :)

Liam from Liam and Delilah by @whumpinggrounds

Liam my absolute beloved. Another early favorite who has kept his hold on my heart. I fucking love a big strong muscular whumpee who wouldn’t hurt a fly. The whump he goes through is so creative and chilling, and watching him try to force himself to fit Delilah’s delusional desires is heartbreaking. And the humiliation and self-blame he feels because Delilah is so much smaller than him, how can he “let” himself be hurt by her is so damn heart wrenching. I just want to give him a hug and tell him none of it was his fault :(

Matteo from The Blackmuir Reign by deluxewhump

Haven’t we all wanted to whump a snotty noble? I love how Matteo’s such an imperfect character, and how that has not stopped me from falling in love with him. I love how you can see him tamp down the shreds of his pride, how he turns to self-degradation in the name of self-preservation. He’s still so noble, and that makes it all the more satisfying those moments when he breaks. I love his tricky relationship with Therrin and I can’t wait to see what his relationship with Saxon will look like now..

Nico and Cal from Collarbones by @ilasknives

Pretty sure through some sort of common law these two are my godchildren. I love love love them. They are some of the few on this list that have been abused and brainwashed since childhood, and the effects are so absolutely devastating. I love the way that Nico, who’s view on life has been purposefully warped by Vaughn, still has hope. How he still fights back, even when it seems to get him nowhere. He has so much goddamn resilience and determination it makes me want to cry. Vaughn has tried so hard to stamp out any light in his heart, and still, still, he is kind, and loving, and caring, and protective.

I love the way that even though these two hate each other sometimes, and are made to hurt each other all the time, in the end it’s them who patches the other one up and puts them to bed. Because they’re family, and that’s forever.

Zee from The Frathouse Box Boy by deluxewhump

That’s my son your honor...Listen when I first read this I actually wasn’t all that into pet whump, but I’m pretty sure this story is so powerful it rewrote my brain waves. I have never witnessed so much growth and character development in a single work, and I have never seen it done so goddamn naturally. I love how he is so devoted to the people in life he cares about. I love that he can be a little shit sometimes. I love that more and more now he sees what he wants and goes after it. I love every new part of him we get to see.

Who is your Favorite Whumpee?? day 5

I get to gush about my favorite characters- omg yes. The order is from ones I found years ago to ones now! @whumpmasinjuly

First of all, Bee's lovely Zee @deluxewhump

ZeeZee I first read about March 2020- wow when quarantine hit, coincidence?? I loved Zee immieditaly , he was the first whumpee I ever really read for! And ahhh. I loved coming back to check on him, even asked a couple anon questions, and was shook when Bee answered within the same hour. Like omg she could make time for an anon question like mine?? So thank you for that haha. But back to Zee. A broken, quick-to-please whumpee who I just wanted to give a big hug and I will forever recommend Zee's story for anyone looking for a new BoxBoy whumpee.

The only other whump story I found before making tumble in 2021 was Danny by @ashintheairlikesnow

Ok... where do I start... probably with the writing in general. Ash is such an incredible writer and wow. WOW. As a younger writer looking for scraps of writing I could get a hold of, I found Ash's writing absolutely addictive. I'd come back to it again and again, rereading everything from the series. (For reference I rarely reread books and have only done so with 3... maybe 4??) But Danny was such a defiant whumpee but he broke so beautifully. And his recovery with his loved ones makes my heart melt. 100000000/10

Ok I don't remember this story very well- but LOVED it and told everyone I highly recommended it- Martin, @redwingedwhump

Ok so from what I do remember (I need to reread it...) It's about Martin, who was the perfect enslaved man from a very rich family. But suddenly was thrown into a gladiator circle. The poor torment he had to go through, his trainer annoyed by his slowness and having to retrain him, made him understand this place wasn't for smiles but for blood. Again guys if you're at all interested in it go read the first chapter!! It's so so good and highly recommend!!!

Someone who kinda start at the same time as me and showed us lab whump, Subject 17 by @only-shadows-dwell-where-we-are

Pretty sure the first story I requested for a taglist because it was so good. Shadow's writing is so.. detailed?? Like I was so impressed at all the medical terms and just nodding along like haha ya I understand?? So incredible. Unlike other bbu stories, Subject 17 is VERY aware he's being tortured and doesn't like it. Love love love. SO so very much.

Ok, the best recovery series here- Coriander @maracujatangerine

Ya, I have yet to talk to you... but my goodness your writing. But y'all when I tell you I binged like 54 posts... I was so hooked I can't. I CAN'T. Their writing is so lovely and whenever I go to read the recent update on the story I have a stupid smile on my face. Coriander is the sweetest, sweetest boy ever and I love him so much and would kill to protect the bby I love him... too much.

Last but CERTAINLY not least... my newest story obsession favorite villain whumpee, Haze by @whumpwillow

Oh my gosh... oh my gosh... how do I begin. Willow... you're the reason I am able to say hero and villain whump is my FAVORITE trope because of the way that you write it. I haven't seen much villain and hero stuff around here, and when I do I always enjoy it, but your story just... the concept of it I've never thought of. Haze is not a meh villain but a downright evil villain now bowing at the whims of furious heroes. He's such a lovely whumpee, so perfectly broken and the half recovery half whump I'm sure is only traumatizing him more. Yes, I love him so much... and I love you *mwuah*

Day 5: Who is your favorite whumpee?

So Ive been pondering over this for a good few days now, and a lot of characters I wanted to use belong to friends who aren’t in the community. Except one little shit keeps coming to mind and his name is Loiral. I don’t think ive ever enjoyed a story so much as reading his because of his utter lack of self preservation do to complete snobbiness and pride. He just thinks he’s better than everyone else, while getting beaten to a pulp and something about that just gets to me every single time. It was a roller coaster to read honestly and @just-horrible-things is an amazing writer and storyteller!!

Aside from your current favorite, what are some of your favorite traits in a whumpee? Fighty and defiant? Soft and scared? All of the above at once? Day Five - Favorite Whumpee(s)

I just recently made a post talking about what I like in a whumpee so I won't go into that all again, I'll just name a few of the characters who've been inspiring to me over the years!

Some of my earliest favorite characters to see get whumped on TV were Little Joe from Bonanza, Jack from 24, and Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. More recently I've been into Colin Morgan as Merlin (and any other role he does where he gets whumped) and I know there's others I just can't think of them right now 😂.

As for having a type I'd say definitely dark haired, slightly built guys with big, pretty eyes (blue or brown usually.) Sometimes there are outliers but that tends to be like, my ultimate type.

As far as favorite whump characters from here on Tumblr, I have a few! In no particular order...

Whumpmas in July - Day 5

My favorite whumpee? That’s hard.

On this site, there are tons I love, but picking one it’s probably @redwingedwhump ‘s Harrow. I never managed to go through with writing a bad guy (well... past bad guy) and I adore him. I’ve read Captured multiple times and it’s just so good.

Of my own, it’s definitely Damien. I enjoy writing Caldyn most, but I enjoy hurting Damien most. Sorry my dear.

In other media, that’s hard. Especially since it says “lately" and “lately” I’ve done nothing than hang out on Tumblr and roll my own blorbos around in my head.

I haven't seen a single episode of Once Upon A Time, and I am already in love with Hook, thanks to our great gif makers here :D

Most video games I play don’t really fit, but my Breannan has been very much inspired by Malomedies from GW2 (who’s just a very minor side char).

As for books, I am having a hard time calling a character of another author a “whumpee” (especially if they could ever find this post dasghdka) but I have been dying to read Rubem’s story, and now that I have the book in my hands, I get scared after half a page and have to close it because aaaaaa.

In general, I think my most common theme is sad, self-loathing, hurt magic men (gender neutral), huh. At least 2 of 3 apply most of the time.

WIJ Day 5 - Who is your favourite whumpee?

My favourite whumpees are:

@winedark-whump's Si, i think his character is super original and so is his world, i love him very much

@whumpopology's Ivy- one of the reasons i realised that i really like whump, her story is so good and her character is amazing

As for my own, Arthur's my original and I love him the most, story-wise Talon and Claw are my faves.

I guess what I like in a whumpee is someone strong enough to hold out but pushed close to the point when they feel they can't hold out for much longer. I also like whumpees who are part of a team, doing a job they consider important or trying to protect something important to them. I also like it when I feel like I'm reading something new or original in terms of character.

I prefer characters who get arcs and learn something about themselves along the way, maybe their strength or to learn not to be so hard on themselves or to see others or the world in a different way.

Day 5: Favourite whumpee

On Tumblr - I can’t choose. There are too many wonderful options, and if I tried listing them all, I know I’d forget some. And I don’t want to leave anyone out. And this prompt only asks for one anyway. :’)

Of my own characters? Well, they all get whumped, and I love all of them equally. As a whumpee, though, it’s Mures. His personality interacts with whump in the way I enjoy most.

In mainstream media, I think it’s Ben Linus, from Lost. Most other characters I’ve enjoyed seeing or reading whump about are side characters who die to show how serious a situation is - or main characters who only get whumped once, which makes it hard to classify them as whumpees. Anyway, Ben Linus is a villain (or at least a morally very-dark-grey ally), which is a plus, and he’s a complex and interesting character, and he’s played by Michael Emerson, who is an amazing actor.

As for traits I like in a whumpee… Competence, intelligence, and autonomy are good. Older (~30+) characters, and ones who aren’t conventionally attractive, are good. I like mutual caretaking, so when they also fill a caretaker role, that’s good too.

I enjoy characters who have had horrible lives prior to the start of the main narrative, and have a host of emotional issues as a result - self-hatred, excessive suspicion, skewed concepts of normality, abrasiveness, resignation to having a horrible life in the future as well… etc. Traits that make a character's situation more difficult, like hesitance to trust people who want to help, are great. I especially like characters who are nasty as a defensive reflex, but are not actually bad people per se. Not all these traits need to be present in a whumpee for me to like them, of course.

WiJ 2022 - 05: Who is Your Favourite Whumpee?

Ahahaha, Blorbo Time >:)

As I've mentioned, I write and love primarily oc whump, so it's only natural that my favourite whumpee is one of my ocs :)

It's Pete lol, Pete Spencer, my lil bb blorbo, been my fav for five years straight, no character has ever stuck quite like him before, and he was how I got addicted to whump.

I would daydream incessantly about hurting him. At first, it was him getting beaten up and having his head shoved into a fountain in a drowning attempt (you can't drown him dwdw), and him shifting, and just the fear and dread he felt was the tastiest thing.

I daydreamed this scenario every night before I went to sleep for about a week... reveling in the whumperflies lol

And yeah, he satisfies just about every single one of my favourite whump tropes (many listed in my wij day 1 post), and he's wrapped up in a nice, neat, little mer-shifter package :)

Originally, I made him for an rp among my friends, and the goal was to give him the most tragic backstory possible.

Previously, I'd made only female characters because heaven forbid I make a male character (I was very ace and I was always worried that people were gonna Assume Things -ahem- 'ooh-la la~' and think I like like him, I was 15 when I made him ok ;-; and younger me despised the assumptions). So I really went out on a limb, and I had some guppies at the time, so I decided to make him a mer shifter, just to indulge my childhood (yeah, I loved H2O as a kid, I have nothing to say for myself XD ).

As for the rp, it was actually a revival of one several years prior (I was ~12 for that original, and it lasted a few chapters), and it died in a day, but I got addicted to whumping Pete within minutes of writing up his profile, and here we are today, five years later :3

Even though the rp died in a day, Pete's backstory continued into what is now Shifting Phases :D

The unnamed world was granted the name Ewrancore, what used to be Clarian City is now Candimor City, I fleshed out the hunters, fleshed out the lore, and kept the little garage with a yellow star on the front in the quiet alley as a homage to the original way back in 2014.

I mentioned the original rp above, and thought it would be fun to mention the first character I used for it (the first oc I actually liked), was also a shifter. Her name was Miu, and she was a winged fox shifter with black fur and feathers... based off a silver fox I believe..? Anyway, first thing I did was have the hunters dart her and had a whole collapse right out of the gate.

And that's also where the darts of today came from!

I appreciate how hard kid me tried lmao, gold star

Anyway, that turned into a wholeass, not-quite-on-topic ramble, so, if you made it to the end, good on ya lol
