WiJ 2022 - 06: Hold On (7/9)

This one's a fun one! But I anticipate day 24 will be even more so (since that directly follows this little snippet >:3 )

Time had a funny way of flowing when one was stuck in an inescapable situation.

For what seemed like hours, Pete floated unmoving, violently rocked by the rough hands of the sea. The cold had long sapped the last of his energy and the numbness began to grow into an icy ache, accentuated by the sharp throbbing of the hooks against every shiver.

Stray nylon ropes brushed against Pete’s fins, leaving him with the distinct feeling that something was there, and he twitched when they brushed against his scales, but the strapping bands saw to it that any wriggling was subdued.

There was nothing he could do.

A brief thought flickered through his mind;

I’m not gonna make it…

A heavy rumbling suffused the water. The vibrations were so low, that they could only be felt, and among the dreams of semi-consciousness, Pete was sure he imagined it. It couldn’t be a boat—no one in their right mind would be out in this weather.

More time passed, how much, he couldn’t be sure, but the rumbling grew stronger and eventually audible. It passed by close, closer than Pete dared imagine. And it didn’t leave. The white hull of the boat was just visible through the rain.

Vaguely, Pete could hear shouting; “Man overboard!”

Splash.

Before he knew it, there was a life ring thrown toward him and he was being tugged back in the direction of the boat. The strapping bands dug harshly into his body, cutting through skin and scales indiscriminately, embedding themselves deep within his flesh, and the hooks shifted and caught with every sway and pull. The freezing water darkened with his blood, the cold making his body sensitive and biting into the wounds. He tensed and curled against the agony, mouth dropping open to let out a gurgling cry, distorted by the shivers that wracked his body, which only made the pain worse.

“He’s alive!”

Just when Pete thought it couldn’t get much worse, he was taken under the arms and pulled entirely from the water. He gasped and choked for air against the rain, crying between chest-rattling breaths. Weakly, he bucked against whoever held him, but before he could worm free, he shrieked as a sudden burst of agony sliced through what felt like every inch of his skin.

“… What is that...? Is that… a belunae...?” he could hear some whisper. He sobbed and allowed himself to be dragged across the deck.

With a hefty grunt, one of the crew hauled Pete toward the cabin. “Just stay still for me, you’re gonna be alright, we’re gonna get all this off. Just hold on there, buddy.”

Ah, now this is a tough one. I spend a lot of my time obsessing in discord servers and writing my own things rather than consuming as much of other people's whump as I possibly can, which seems a bit contrary considering the scope of my addiction...

WiJ 2022 - 01: (Re)introduce Yourself

Intro!!

Hi, I'm emc, and I write whump of original characters in original settings! I've had this blog since some time in August last year (2021), and in these short few months, I've come a long way in the whump community. Everyone I've met here is wonderful and friendly and I've enjoyed every second of whumpblr and whump discord.

I've had at least a vague awareness about my taste for (fictional) blood since I was a kid around 5 or 6, but I first remember seeking the whumperflies in my teens (I'll get more into that in tomorrow's post :3c), and later still, I discovered Whumpblr posts through Pintrest, and joined a whump discord server a few years later, and then made this blog a year after that ^-^' . Getting into whump is the best thing I've ever done tbh, it's the gift that keeps on giving.

(I can now run off whump derived dopamine instead of trying to be happy!! /j/j/j/j)

Some fun facts are... I'm Australian, I do karate, I'm in the Danny Phantom fandom, I have an interest in cutting gems and other semiprecious stones, I have three cats, I love plants and gardening, and my favourite colour is unironically a deep, cool red. I also draw!

Project Updates!

Since joining the community, I have made tremendous progress on my nearest and dearest project Shifting Phases! Not only do I now have a rough idea of how to get everyone to the end scenes, I've actually started writing it!!! I'm super excited! I want to get it beta read in its entirety before I post it though, so it's a long way off yet. (As a byproduct, this means that I'll never post the fic unfinished lmao)

This story has spawned an AU that somehow manages to be darker. It's still in the ideation phases (brainrot spam to all of my whump friends on discord, rip them), so it'll be a little while before you see much posted about this one :3

My friend I recently made a lot of progress on Satanus Magus! We have basically the whole plot figured out, it just needs to be beefed up with some scenes. I look forward to writing that all out in the word doc void :)

My friend and I actually hope to publish this irl one day, so, That's A Thing!

It's an older idea of mine, it spawned in around 2018... But getting out of school and into this community has really boosted my creativity (bouncing ideas around is a powerful tool). It's like an action movie, but instead of guns and explosions, it's elemental magic and explosions!! It's not an outright whumpy fic, but ofc bc I'm involved, there are definitely a lot of whump themes.

Lastly, I have a new fic idea kicking around in my head involving a vampire and a human. It's still veeeerrryyy early days for it, but I'm already in love with the concept, and I have been sorely lacking in vampire whump for many years. I look forward to working with Malté and Corwin >:3c though I'm sure the same eagerness is not extended back -rubs my evil little handses together-

A whumpee getting tangled and/or ensnared in something they can't get out of

A painful mobility impairment as a result of a traumatic injury

Delirium and panic where they don’t recognise their friend/caretaker, maybe they’re waking up from a nightmare, and they lash out at their friend/caretaker-- most fun with nightmares/night terrors ;DD

I'm recently getting into fucked up mental health shit >:)

Ab00se (but like, not romantic relationships)

Nonhuman whumpees (mer and vampire/demon whumpees are where it's at tbh)

Painful transformation (and the aftermath, especially if the whumpee ends up Different than they were Before)

Bonus points for terrified, horrified, and very uncoordinated bb getting used to their new body and having an awful time

Secret based whump where bad things happen if anyone ever finds out whumpee's secret

An injury jeopardising the secret-- the secret needs to be revealed it to treat the injury

A whumpee going stupidly far to hide a secret, leading to a dramatic collapse and injury/scar reveal :D

A secret reveal gone badly never fails to give me whumperflies <3

I love it when circumstances are what leads to the whump. Not all of my whumpees have whumpers at all times, and where the whump comes from often fluctuates, but a common theme of my works is that the whump is primarily a product of circumstance that enables my characters to be whumped, whether by another person (whumper), or otherwise.

A happy, or at the very least, a bittersweet ending

WiJ 2022 - 03: Lost (4/9)

CONTENT and WARNINGS: mer whumpee, fear of the ocean/depths

It was cold when Pete awoke, so very cold. His bones ached in protest, longing for the gentle heat and rest his days with Timmy afforded him. Thankfully, his coat and scarf still retained a thin pocket of warm water close to his skin, shielding his torso as long as he didn’t move.

Wait…

Water..?

Pete’s eyes flashed open, panic rising in his gut. Above him, there was the bright grey sky filtered by the surface of the churning water, and below, a vast, bottomless expanse that faded into darkness. He’d fall, he’d sink, the darkened depths would reach a smoky up and snatch him away forever!

Terror seized his heart in a grip colder than the water, and his gills flared fast as if he couldn’t breathe. He tried to flail his legs, but in their place, long, orange fins fluttered instead. He couldn’t scream, but Powers know he tried. Adrenaline rushed through his body, lending him the strength to frantically claw at the water and drag himself up.

When the webbing between Pete’s fingers caught only air, he breached the surface with a choked gasp, mouth filling with fresh water. All around him, rain fell in sheets so thick it was impossible to see further than a few meters.

Timmy! He wanted to scream, Liz! Anyone, please! But try as he might, his voice eluded him.

His satchel bobbed at his side on the restless surface, and in it, his phone, no doubt soaked beyond repair. Still, he tried, but the screen remained frustratingly dark.

His ears drooped. No phone, no map, no way home.

Again, Pete frantically spun around searching desperately for anything to save him. His fins curled and twisted with his body, but still nothing.

The choppy sea grew wilder when a strong bluster picked up, sending the rain hurtling sideways into his head, stinging his cheek. He squinted against the onslaught but there was no land or horizon in sight. He didn’t know which way to swim, he didn’t know which stung his eyes more—the rain or fresh tears.

If he could’ve, he would’ve whimpered;

I’m lost.

WiJ 2022 - 24: Rescued (8/9)

Ok so I've actually finished writing this whole mini-series! I've done a light edit on the version I'm going to submit to the anthology, and these ones honestly look a little shabby like they need some extra love ^-^'

So when I get back home, they should change a bit to be... a touch more polished >.>

CONTENT and WARNINGS: mer/shifter whumpee (in mer form!), painful caretaking, pollution/fishing waste used for whump purposes, fishing hooks etc. embedded in skin, strangulation mention, dehumanisation, allusions to previous captivity and torture.

The cabin of the boat was markedly warmer than outside, but Pete, through the agony of being moved, couldn’t decide which was worse; again suffering in the hands of humans, or succumbing to the cold of the sea.

“Oh Powers, he’s a mess. I think that’s the worst tangle-up I’ve ever seen,” a lady human remarked.

“What do we do with it?” the young man asked.

“Help him of course! We can’t just… leave him!”

“Still counts as marine life,” said the older man.

Pete let out a keening wail when the older man lifted him again, and he gasped, flinching violently, when the lady gingerly took the end of his tail by the netting. Together, they lowered him into the hull and laid him out.

Dimly, Pete could see the lady unsheathe a knife. His heart thundered harder at the sight of it drawing near. She kneeled at his side, bringing the blade ever-closer to his skin.

“N-n—” he gasped, “no! No, p-p-p-please--!” Adrenaline flooded his veins once more, and he pulled at the net as hard as he could in a vain attempt to escape, but stopped at the overwhelming pain with another strangled cry. More blood beaded at his throat where the strapping band finally broke his skin, halting further sound.

“Hey, hey, hey—It’s alright, I’m not gonna hurt ya, I just need to get you out of this. I promise we won’t turn you in.

The young man looked up suddenly, and the lady fixed him with a sharp stare.

“We won’t,” he said hastily.

“I’m gonna try again, okay? Just hold still for me…” the lady said, “I’ll start down here.”

She brought the knife to the end of Pete’s tail, just above the fins and hooked the tip between a hole and started cutting. He flinched again, shivering, but no pain came. He didn’t dare move.

The others set to work around him, but after Pete’s reaction they didn’t use knives. Instead, they carefully detangled what little they could, paving the way for the lady who worked patiently up his marred, white and orange tail, cutting off chunks of net and rope and casting them aside.

There was pity in her eyes. Pete wasn’t sure if she regarded him as another being, or as an animal.

Getting the rest of his clothes off was no easy task. While the smaller hooks never made it past Pete’s sweater, the larger ones had pieced all the way through, coat and all. The lady grimaced and made an apology before continuing.

The barbs of each hook tugged and tore more flesh, drawing more weak keens from the mer, but the lady’s hands remained gentle through each motion, never lingering on his skin, and never hurting him more than necessary.

For that, Pete was grateful.

At last, his shirt came off and was laid to the side with the rest of his belongings. Stunned gasps filled the room, audible over the pounding rain on the deck above.

Each mark was laid bare before the humans aboard the boat, as were the deep purple bruises on his chest and side from his assailant, and the impact with the water.

“…Those are some wicked scars…” the young man murmured.

The older man grunted in grim acknowledgement.

“Oh… that’s… that’s a House crest, so those… oh…”

Pete trembled harder. He just wanted to curl up somewhere dark and never be looked upon again.

In the silence, the lady set to work. Soon, well more than twenty hooks filled a small dish, each removal punctuated with another cry, then whimper when they flushed the punctures and patched them up. Then came the strapping bands. There had to be meters of it embedded in the poor creature’s flesh, all up and down its tail and torso. She had no choice but to flush it and apply butterfly stitches as she went, ignoring his flinches and wails, and the way his grip tightened on the corner of his coat with each tug of the straps.

The neglect of some people was disgusting, especially when it led to the suffering of another creature like this.

It was torture.

Then again, given the state of his body, some people would gladly tighten the bands.

At last, the lady was done, leaving the mer panting and sobbing on the floor.

“Is there anyone we can call?” she asked, gently placing a hand on Pete’s shoulder.

He flinched hard with a cry and drew his free arm close before sputtering, “T-Timmy, Timm-mmothey—Timmothey Paige… Pl-please.”

WiJ 2022 - 04: Share a TV Show/Movie/Story /Media That Gives You the Whumperflies

Whumpy Shows 'n' Stuff

I mentioned in the first two wij posts that vampire knight served as my gateway into understanding whump as a concept, but it remains, to this very day, the whumpiest shit I've ever watched.

It's not perfect (far from it), but at least for me, Zero suffering and angsting in every single episode was totally worth it.

Ofc, if you're tired of me harping on about Vampire Knight, Danny Phantom is also concerningly... there. Canonically, some fucked up shit happened and whoops, there were some whumperflies in there, whoops -sweats- Listen, it has so many parallels to my favourite whump shit ok--

Oh yeah, and the fandom is far worse (in terms of traumatising the bbies), and even better because they age him up for all the horrible things they do to him lmao. There is SO much fanfic and fan art and fan-made content (that is often better than the source material), and the whole community is like us-- super friendly, and still going strong to this day (despite the original show running from 2004-2007).

It's very cool, 10/10 would recommend!

If animation isn't your style, Daredevil is also pretty fun :)) I've not watched it all the way through yet (I made it pretty far tho), but Matt Murdock all beat up and angstily trying to hide his secret is pretty damn fun >:D

WiJ 2022 - 15: Numb (6/9)

This one fell a bit behind too bc I was just Tired lmao, bUT, the next prompt will def be out on time because it's already DONE!

This little series probably feels janky atm, and it'll probably stay that way, but uh, I'll be duplicating my document to remove the separating titles and make edits and hopefully get it beta'd to make sure its flow is cohesive and makes sense :D

The cold was both a blessing and a curse.

Cold needles danced and prickled all across his skin and scales. It almost felt like hands of nails were pressing on his entire body, shoving the hooks and straps ever-deeper into his flesh. The frigid water dulled sensation in his fins and fingers, and the icy ache crept slowly up his arms. While it stemmed the bleeding and siphoned away the sharp agony of the hooks and strapping bands, it was only temporary, and it didn’t stop the throbbing pain that accompanied his wounds on every weak heartbeat.

Worst of all, he couldn’t move. It wasn’t just the nets though; he could barely twitch his fingers to try and untangle himself between each wave violent wave. It wasn’t just the pain the cold had sapped, but his energy.

The waves rocked him, twisted him, and turned him over in an unrelenting cycle. He wasn’t sure which way was up anymore, but what did it matter…? Even if he got out of whatever this was, he wouldn’t make it back to shore. If he did, he’d be seen and killed.

Would he be stabbed? Strangled with the ropes and bands he came wrapped in? Or would they prolong his suffering and call the hunters to take him away, to keep the beach and the humans’ consciences clean of his blood?

The numbness continued to spread, now working up his tail and into his shoulders, and he could feel his shivers beginning to ebb. How much longer would he stay like this?

He didn’t want to think about it, but the answer kept niggling;

For the rest of my life.

WiJ 2022 - 16: Read and Comment on a Piece You've Never Read Before

Ahaha, yes hello again, I'm a little bit fried, and I'm a bit cooked in terms of figuring out what to do about some of the prompts, but I am going to find a way to ramble, since that's what I do best :D

The Fic

I had a look through the pinned posts of a few of the blogs I've more recently started following, and a tasty little thing caught my eye;

We Aren't Meant to Be by @whumper-in-training

It's on hiatus atm, but I'm genuinely interested in branching my tastes out a bit more to explore the BBU, where this one is set, and I must say, the writing is good, and the concept is rather interesting given how I perceive the BBU to be set up.

Anyways, it's a series, and I've only just started reading it, but I'm keen lol, it had me hooked in the first 2 minutes. Couldn't stop staring at how the prose gently but very enticingly set the scene.

I'm also trying very hard to write write write since I now have a deadline, so I might be a little slow reading, but just know that I'm looking Directly At This Fic :)

But yes, if the BBU is your jam, it's def worth checking out OvO

WiJ 2022 - 14: What are Your Favourite Whump Character Dynamics?

Whumpee

Littol creachurs, lil bbies, I adore them.

My preference in whumpee is soff, pathetic, and sweet. A limp noodle of a boi, all wibbly and cute. You can poke him, and he will whimper but remember his shape.

I love nonhuman whumpees most of all ehehe, shifters and vampires and mer and demons are always fun :3 cute widdle ears and teefs and tails and--

Caretaker

Anyone that is capable of speaking softly and wrapping up the whumpee like a littol, crying sushi roll <3<3<3 a good amount of fire is fun too.

BUT

I also love any flavour of bad caretaker :) whether incompetent, ignorant/unwitting, or willfully malicious. Very fun, mess with whumpee's head a little and make them terrified of everyone, including any RealTM caretakers that come around and genuinely mean well and want to help :))))

Bottom line, I'm not picky

Whumper

Not even necessary all of the time.

Anyone can be a whumper in my works, whether intentional or unintentional. A lot of the time, circumstance or environment makes (people into the whumper of my poor widdle noodle (see Ewrancore fashioning Kate into a bitch, and slamming Pete with anti-belunae imagery and ideology on the daily :3 and threatening his life with it).

There is usually a main whumper, the one who dishes out the most consciously, but tbh I don't actually care for those characters, sorry Johnstone ^-^'

They are little more than tools to me ahaha... but I will still try to develop their characters.

Just no whumper blorbos unless they suddenly become lil squeeshy whumpees >:3c

Inter-character Dynamics

Whumpee/Caretaker: I love it when a Whumpee is totally reliant on a Caretaker :3 it's both very cute to watch them snuggle and depend on each other, but it's perfect for taking Caretaker away and watch them both struggle without each other :DDD always fun to watch the spiral. I'm gonna do it in the Hunter!AU :3c (which I don't think I ever explicitly announced lmfao)

Whumper/Whumpee: I love it when Whumper dehumanises Whumpee, drags them down, deletes their self-worth, renders them immobile with injuries that will end up permanent because Whumpee is unable to get help, even after they escape Whumper's Cruel ClutchesTM.

Circumstance: Then I just love the happy little accidents OvO Whumpee trying to hide their nonhuman status that would see them hunted and killed (or worse) if caught out, having a little accident that reveals them. Both the accident is whumpy, the fear and angst of trying to hide it to get somewhere safe is whumpy, and also if anyone sees and tries to... do something about it ;)) hint hint, nudge nudge. I use this all the time :D

Actual Whump Shit Let's Goooooo!!

As I keep mentioning in my off-topic rambles, my favourite flavours of whump include non-human whumpees, secrets relating to the non-human-ness, captivity whump, and all manner of illnesses and accidents that can often be brought about as a result of the nonhuman's species status! Oh yes, and recovery whump and secrets!

I'm taking this oppourtunity to really go into detail about why I love these things so much :D

This post is getting ridiculously long, so I'm gonna slap a "Read More" on it :)

Nonhuman Whumpees!

Oh yes I love them, they are a staple of my whump diet. I'm talking shifters, mer, vampires, demons, all sorts of little critters (specifically the more human shaped ones, they need human enough faces/bodyplans for me ;-; otherwise it edges into animal whump and that is a personal line I'm not gonna cross).

With that out of the way, there is so much you can do with a whumpee like that. They'll have specific weaknesses, like sunlight, silver/candinium, and species specific diseases, and you can justify catching, torturing, and killing them because they're not human, they're monsters, and they're dangerous <3

I love it when said whumpee couldn't hurt a fly. Not wouldn't, couldn't lol

It opens up so many avenues. You can take hospitals and doctors off the list of people to ask for help, and while being hunted down for existing, whumpee can't afford to trust the wrong person, so they don't trust anyone at all.

There's just, so much you can do!

Like hurt specific nonhuman parts of them and exploit them for it! Scale a mer, harvest a vampire's venom, steal feathers, steal fur, hurt tails, and wings, and ears! They're so sensitive!

And the rest of my taste in whump stems from what I can do to non-humans :D

Secrets!!!!!!

Goddamn, a good secret reveal gets me every fucking time.

I've noticed that it's always the non-human's secret about being non-human getting out though, so I'm specific with this one ^-^'

Anyway, I love it when the secret is kept not for the welfare of family and loved ones, but for whumpee's own safety. Bonus points if that safety is from said family and loved ones >;3c (see pretty much every Danny Phantom fanfic ever, and also cannon Danny, shit man that's fucked up lol "they want to tear me apart molecule by molecule" is a real, canon line id diaglogue).

Pete would get shunned and rejected by his mother if she ever found out, and if he was in front of anyone else, he would be reported to the hunters by an informant.

He can't afford to let that secret get out.

I just adore the emotional stakes of a whumpee being scared of their own friends and family, and literally everyone because everyone might kill him (or help) under certain conditions, and I love what they stand to lose if it got out.

Is it a metaphor for being any flavour of queer? Not for me, and I don't write it with that intention.

Could it be read that way? Sure, if you want, but I personally am not interested in that flavour of whump.

Dehumanisation >:)

Put them in muzzles, blindfold them, gag them, give them an ear tag like they're cattle, drag them around on a leash, tie them up, treat them like a beat and like they're a threat.

Especially when they're not.

Anyway, this one's more of a seasoning, like chilli. I sprinkle it over the top of the whump to make all the other flavours sing :D

I love a whumpee who's had hope and free will stripped of them. I like it when the light leaves their eyes, but they're not dead... >;)

They are tired, so very tired. And they'll never be strong enough to escape on their own, and if they did manage it, what do they have to look forward to? They'll never be the same. They'll never be able to function to even a fraction of their previous standard. Their family/friends/loved ones will never look at them the same way again. That's if they're still around.

They can kiss their life goodbye.

It has been destroyed by years and years of torture, conditioning, punishment, dehumanisation, and objectification. And then when they inevitably survive through that hell, not aging enough for their body to give out, even after decades, they are discarded like they are merely a toy their owner had grown bored of.

If the whumpee has even a shred of hope left, I want to crush it.

And then save them when they're on death's doorstep for real. A caretaker-type character could swoop in and scoop up the whumpee when they're cold and alone, and a mess of a broken shell, and nurse them back to health, leading to messy recovery whump.

Short term captivity can be fun too-- inescapable torture without totally ruining whumpee's mind. This happens to canon!Pete :) he gets to live with permanent injuries, trauma, and paranoia :DD

Recovery Whump!

Recovery whump!!! Everything can go wrong, no recovery will go smoothly. Perhaps caretaker is really bad at caretaking, perhaps they're new to it, perhaps they don't care enough,or are just unable to cater to whumpee's specific needs.

If whumpee is a vampire, caretaker struggles to provide enough blood. Maybe they're squeamish or have trauma themselves. Maybe they just don't know what the whumpee needs, like with Pete. He barely expresses anything about his needs, so it's very easy for him to starve or end up moon-deprived.

Even if the caretaker is good, they know what they're doing, no one is perfect. They could slip up and shout, or accidentally hurt whumpee when they don't mean it.

Wounds heal messily too, and whumpee is ever-so fragile, both physically and mentally. All it can take to spur a breakdown or panic attack is one wrong word.

I just love all of the aspects of recovery whump, but I'm sure I'm forgetting some, like wound treatments-- cleaning them, stitching them up, dressing them, changing the dressings, infections, reopening of wounds, tearing of stitches...

There's so much lmao

Sick Fic/Illness, and Accidental Injuries/Predicaments

These are always fun! Can include general sicknesses like the cold or flu, or any other fun painful things, and also any accidents, like tripping and falling, perhaps even down the stairs and breaking something for whatever whumpy reason. Then you have the ones that creep up on everyone, like chronic malnutrition.

What I love doing to Pete, because he's a belunae shifter, is moon deprivation (compromising his immune system, healing, and ability to shift), an virus specific to shifters (high fevers, coughing, weakness, and compromised shifting), and injuries (head or a jab to a specific part of his abdomen) causing a partial shift in a sudden wave of pain (giving him his webbing between his fingers and toes, funky ears, improved light sensitivity, fins, and weakness in his legs), which can only be reset by a full shift. Until then, he gets to endure waves of pain, and constant aches, and deal with whatever consequences suddenly collapsing and having fins and funky hands and ears entails.

Then I love for him to get kicked out (roughly, dragged, and dropped down the few stone stairs) onto the cold street for being that way in front of Kate/in her home, and to not come back until he's back to normal. Poor thing wants to grab his coat, but Kate snarls that he's belunae, he doesn't need it. Pete just shivers on the ground crying and trying to drag himself away to anywhere remotely warm, to Timmy's place preferably.

ANYWAY, perhaps, there are even diseases and illnesses that affect the whumpee's species specifically. Oh, and everything going well, they can't go to hospital unless they'd like to be killed or kidnapped :DDD so they're stuck at home taking longer to recover.

There are so many possibilities, even if they just break their arm or something, all of the above can apply! Throw in other illnesses and infections while they're week and you've got a great time!

Also, severely weakened whumpees my beloved <3

Espionage/Spy Whump!

Despite watching more than my fair share of action movies, and all of the James Bond movies, when I joined whumpblr, I never got into spy whump, and I've never had any spy whumpees or anything of that nature.

But!

I do very much enjoy secret related angst and whump, so I thought this would be an interesting genre to take a look at, since I've seen it in passing.

I scrolled through a lot more of spy whumpblr than these posts I've linked, but these are a few which I found interesting.

First thing I'll do though, is say that these are good whump, and are quite well written <3

They're just...

Not really to my taste ^-^'

I didn't really get whumperflies, or even the promise of whumperflies off anything that I came across, and I'll put it down to my personal taste I suppose.

I was expecting to be Very Eyes because of how much I adore secret angst, but I suppose it's only ever been in a nonhuman character's context where they try to hide what they are, and risk death or worse if they were to ever get caught.

In fact, that is the premise of Shifting Phases.

I find spy whump very focused on the torture of stoic, and often prepared characters willing to die for their country or cause. I respect the hell out of that taste in whump, but I prefer it when the character is soft, squishy and woefully underprepared.

I love the emotional fallout of their torture, of them dealing with the fact that they lied to their closest friends and family for years out of selfish fear, and I especially love it when it is their worst nightmares becoming reality.

There are of course a few fun whumpy moments in spy related media, like when Bond got poisoned in Casino Royale. Very fun >:) but I can also remove that whump trope from it's spy context and bring it elsewhere and achieve the same whumperflies...

It can also get gory... I never really liked the breaking of (or chopping off of) a whumpee's fingers or toes. I go for the mangling of limbs, breaking of bones, cutting of tendons, and brands and/or marking tattoos :)

Because I am who I am, here is a food metaphor I prepared earlier!

Torture is a fine meat; like a nice steak, or piece of roasted meat. A lot of people love it and that's valid, and I can tell a good roast when I see one. However, it is not my personal preference. I find it a bit plain... ^-^' I prefer other flavours mixed in, whether you add a sauce or make it a curry. Oh, and certainly not to forget cured meats. Plain, but with a bit of zest :D

I put the torture in the pan, and I add a bunch of spices and sauces and veggies, and serve it with a portion of rice or pasta (the comfort and/or emotional fallout and angst)

WiJ 2022 - 08: How did You Find the Whumpblr Community?

It's a bit of a funny, backwards story actually

I started working on what is now Shifting Phases in May-June of 2017, and I had the habit of near constantly scrolling endlessly through Pinterest.

I'd find and save cool art, cool character art, prompts, Tumblr posts (I didn't quite realise though), and I eventually stumbled across writing related things. One of the accounts that jumps out is @writing-prompt-s . Their writing prompts are alllllll over Pinterest lmao and for good reason! They're really cool :D

And then I started finding angsty ones, and since I was Vibe Scrolling, with Violence Against Pete sitting in my little pink brainmeats, I started saving them to his Pinterest board. Natrually, the 💫algorithm💫 fed me more.

Started me on my addiction :)

I lived on that for a year or so, (school was... rough, and kept me busy and 'busy' at all hours), but started writing down some of the posts in my writing journal in... late 2019. When I started writing the sources down to go with them (well, this is Pinterest, there wasn't always a source), I think that's when I really started to notice the word "whump" coming up... @redwingedwhump and @one-lonely-whumperfly are a couple of names I remember... but yeah.

I still didn't join whumpblr, even though I knew what whump was. My stressed out little brainmeats didn't connect whump and Tumblr. So, I joined a whump discord instead. I joined Whump Writing Central on 18/07/2020

0-0 That seems to be a while ago... Is this what getting old is gonna feel like???

I vibed there talking vaguely about Pete in the question-of-the-days for a solid year before I really got comfortable enough to start brainrotting to my current levels lol

Then in early 2021, I made a Tumblr blog!! I was at my nan and pop's house vibing on the couch when I decided I was pissed off with Instagram for posting things and seeing what the people I was following were doing, so I took a chance.

Here's the kicker;

IT WASN'T EVEN FOR WHUMP!!

I JUST WANTED TO SEE ART AND MINECRAFT BUILDS AND SCIENCE AND THINGS FROM THE PEOPLE I FOLLOWED

And because I was really incompetent, I didn't really use it much until I decided to join whumpblr in... hmm...

I genuinely can't find my first post OR my blog creation date, but it was before Whumptober. Perhaps... August..? It has August vibes, I think I remember stumbling across my first post a while back...

ANYWAY

I have been your problem ever since, and it will stay that way until I say so.

WiJ 2022 - 05: Who is Your Favourite Whumpee?

Ahahaha, Blorbo Time >:)

As I've mentioned, I write and love primarily oc whump, so it's only natural that my favourite whumpee is one of my ocs :)

It's Pete lol, Pete Spencer, my lil bb blorbo, been my fav for five years straight, no character has ever stuck quite like him before, and he was how I got addicted to whump.

I would daydream incessantly about hurting him. At first, it was him getting beaten up and having his head shoved into a fountain in a drowning attempt (you can't drown him dwdw), and him shifting, and just the fear and dread he felt was the tastiest thing.

I daydreamed this scenario every night before I went to sleep for about a week... reveling in the whumperflies lol

And yeah, he satisfies just about every single one of my favourite whump tropes (many listed in my wij day 1 post), and he's wrapped up in a nice, neat, little mer-shifter package :)

Originally, I made him for an rp among my friends, and the goal was to give him the most tragic backstory possible.

Previously, I'd made only female characters because heaven forbid I make a male character (I was very ace and I was always worried that people were gonna Assume Things -ahem- 'ooh-la la~' and think I like like him, I was 15 when I made him ok ;-; and younger me despised the assumptions). So I really went out on a limb, and I had some guppies at the time, so I decided to make him a mer shifter, just to indulge my childhood (yeah, I loved H2O as a kid, I have nothing to say for myself XD ).

As for the rp, it was actually a revival of one several years prior (I was ~12 for that original, and it lasted a few chapters), and it died in a day, but I got addicted to whumping Pete within minutes of writing up his profile, and here we are today, five years later :3

Even though the rp died in a day, Pete's backstory continued into what is now Shifting Phases :D

The unnamed world was granted the name Ewrancore, what used to be Clarian City is now Candimor City, I fleshed out the hunters, fleshed out the lore, and kept the little garage with a yellow star on the front in the quiet alley as a homage to the original way back in 2014.

I mentioned the original rp above, and thought it would be fun to mention the first character I used for it (the first oc I actually liked), was also a shifter. Her name was Miu, and she was a winged fox shifter with black fur and feathers... based off a silver fox I believe..? Anyway, first thing I did was have the hunters dart her and had a whole collapse right out of the gate.

And that's also where the darts of today came from!

I appreciate how hard kid me tried lmao, gold star

Anyway, that turned into a wholeass, not-quite-on-topic ramble, so, if you made it to the end, good on ya lol
