Cockney Rhyming Slang! ✨
I’ve seen a good amount of rhyming slang from Hobie in fics and I love to see it! I love language and slang; I find the origins and usage of words fascinating, so I thought I’d make a little post about it to offer up some knowledge, tips and suggestions that I hope will be helpful or interesting to both those currently incorporating it in fics, as well as to those who want to use it but might not know where to start. Or even to those who don’t write but want to know!
So here we go!
First, a very brief history!
Cockney rhyming slang originated from the East End of London in the early 19th century. It was originally used by Cockneys so they could speak in front of the police without being understood and was very handy if you had some dodgy dealings going on. It has since passed into common language and is no longer restricted to use by Cockneys.
So you can see why it would make sense for Hobie to know a lot of it if he’s running around rebelling against a corrupt government run by supervillains!
How does it work?
Cockney rhyming slang works by taking a word and using a rhyming phrase of about two to three words to replace it. For example: “Daisy roots” means “boots” and “Ones and twos” means “shoes”.
There can be multiple phrases used for the same word, for example: both “Trouble and strife” and “Duchess of Fife” mean “wife”.
A Cockney rhyming slang tip:
A little shortcut to make your Cockney rhyming slang more authentic to a day to day Brit is to only use the first word in the phrase. For example:
If I wanted to write “Use your head”, I could write “Use your loaf of bread” and that would be accurate, but it would be even more accurate to just say “Use your loaf”.
Another example:
“I haven’t got a clue”, which if you’ve seen Across the Spider-Verse, you would know is “I haven’t got a Scooby Doo”, is commonly shortened to “I haven’t got a Scooby”. This actually threw me off when I saw it in the cinema and I never knew why until I learned about the “first word rule” in an East End documentary the other night 😂
Other examples:
Bread and honey = money. “I don’t have enough bread for that.”
Rabbit and pork = talk. “He don’t half rabbit on”. Chas and Dave wrote a song called Rabbit, which is a bit casually rude towards women as many things from the 80’s can be, but it did give us the line “You’ve got more rabbit than Sainsbury’s“ which I find quite funny.
Butchers hook = look. “Let’s take a butchers at that”
Donkeys ears = years. “I haven’t seen you in donkeys!”
I believe that back in the day, only using the first word of the phrase was an added level of secrecy to keep the police from knowing what you were talking about since it took away the rhyming portion of the phrase which the police might have been able to guess the meaning of. Only those who knew the rest of the phrase would know what the other was talking about. It has since become a more common practice to the point where many people don’t even realise they’re doing it (as I did until recently).
However, it is still perfectly acceptable to use the full phrase. For example, I’ve called someone on the old “dog and bone” (phone) and I’ve heard the stairs be called “apples and pears” but not really just “apples”.
Other examples:
Donkeys ears = years. “I haven’t seen you in donkeys!” as mentioned above. It’s also commonly mistaken for Donkeys Years. “I haven’t seen you in donkeys years”. Although technically it isn’t the full phrase, I’d say this still counts.
Shortening and adaptations:
Over time, some of the phrases have been shortened and adapted to form new slang. For example:
Bottle and stopper = copper (police). I’ve seen a lot of use of bottle and stopper in fanfics and that’s perfectly acceptable. However, the phrase is more commonly shortened to “Bottle” or adapted to “Bluebottle” or “Mr Bluebottle” due to the colour of their uniforms. Also, “bluebottle mob” can be used to mean the police force.
Another example of shortened and adapted Cockney rhyming slang is:
“Pork pies” = lies. More commonly shortened to “Porkies”. E.g. “she’s telling porkies.”
Here are some other slang words that have their origins in Cockney pronunciation:
Wotcher - an informal greeting originating from the Cockney contraction of “what cheer” (basically meaning “hello” or “what’s up?”). E.g. “Wotcher.”
Bruv/Bruvver - brother. Used the same way one would say “bro”. Bruvver is a cockney pronunciation of “brother” which has been shorted to the more commonly used “bruv”. E.g. “Good to see ya, bruv!”
And there you go, some quick knowledge about Cockney rhyming slang! I don’t claim to be an expert on the topic, a true Cockney would know far more than I do, but I thought I’d throw my hat into the ring and share the knowledge I do have in the hopes that it will help or entertain someone.
I’ll make another post going into police specific slang terms since that seems to be something that is intrinsically tied to the Spiderman experience, as well as Hobie’s, even more so as an anarchist arachnid, fascist punching punk rebel.
I might also make another post about general British slang words. Let me know if that’s something you’d be interested in or if there’s a specific area that you’d like to know about!

OH DADDY!!
She never knew her father, just that he wasn’t around. Mom was always lonely and doing all the heavy lifting for her sweet daughter.
When she was at age 15, her Mom finally met a decent man. He had no kids of his own and was in his late 20s but his life must have been rough earlier. Salt and pepper hair, thick set beard and a tall, intimidating physique. He towered over her mom and was loving, caring and kind towards her. They became stepdaughter and stepfather around 3 years later, when Mom finally decided to put a ring on it.
It was around this time at age 18, she started having perverse thoughts. Just like any young girl, she was going through a phase of discovery. Her tits and ass were beginning to fill in and she was gaining all the attention from the boys around her.
She began wearing cute clothes - tops that barely fit and short booty shorts and loved the attention so much. Even around the house, she would dress like such a cute little slut because she started to develop a taboo crush. Even though she wasn’t his own seed, her stepdad was a gentleman and always took good care of her. However, he kept staring and looking at her more and more often.
It was a few days after her 19th birthday, when her Mom said she’s going to be out of the country for 12 days due to some work. She wanted to go along but her Mom couldn’t make it happen. She had to share the house with her step dad and he was tasked with taking good care of her.
In her slutty mind, this made her pussy throb and pulse, and no sooner than her mother left for her work trip, this young woman started to push the limits. Wearing see through tops with no bra on. Walking around in just undies and more, she was testing the resolve of her stepfather.
She posted all over Tumblr and Twitter, disgusting incestuous fantasies about wanting to be taken by her stepfather. She read and watched stepdad - stepdaughter porn and could often be heard moaning while rubbing her virgin pussy to it.
For the first two days, her stepfather tried his best to hold back. He was doing so well too, even if the bulge in his pants stirred he was being such a gentleman which made this young little whore even more needy for him.
One night, she stumbled into the house around midnight after drinking in a parking lot with her friends. Dressed like a bimbo she stuttered into the living room and was greeted by her stepfather. But, he looked different?
‘Where the hell do you think you were?’ he said to her, stepping closer. She shrunk away from him but he grabbed her by the hand firmly and dragged her onto the couch. She sat down next to him.
‘Sorry daddy… my mistake!’ she mumbled and looked down. Her short skirt was riding up her thighs revealing her undies a little bit. ‘Won’t happen again…’ she said. He growled and with one motion made her lay across his lap, positioning her.
‘You think you can just apologise?! I’m supposed to keep you safe!’ he said, rubbing her thighs with his big hands. ‘What if… what if something happened to you? Your delicious body is such a temptation for men..’ as his hands traced up closer to your butt
‘But daddy. I’m so sorry…’ she said. Wiggling her ass she could feel him getting hard underneath her. He growled when she did that and then came the first smack. ‘You think you’re so smart? Fucking slut! Saying sorry means nothing to me.’
His spanks got harder, each one making her whine and wince but also making her drip from her pussy. Flipping up her skirt he saw the thin fabric of her undies was soaked. Kicking her legs open he rubbed directly on her cunt and mocked her ‘Fucking virgin slut… getting so wet from being smacked. I’ll show you what you get when you tease men!!’
He slid her panties aside and began to explore her cunt with his fingers, roughly going in and out of her cunt and playing with her clit using her thumb. She moaned and he slapped her pussy ‘You’re such a whore. I found your Tumblr and Twitter. You’ve been wanting this, haven’t you?’
Your pussy clenched at the thought of being caught by him and you had tears streaming down your face as you apologised to him. But he wasn’t listening.
He picked her up and pinned her to the couch, unzipping his pants as his thick cock bounced out. Rubbing the tip over your pussy as he folded you in half, he told you that your cunt looked so pretty. You mumbled ‘Daddy I’m a virgin…’ but he just spat on your face and massaged it into your skin.
‘I know sweetheart…’ he growled as he choked you ‘but Daddy’s gonna be your first’ as his tip pushed past your lips and entered you. You screamed a little and were quickly silenced by another hard slap on your cheeks.
In one go and with all his might, he thrust his cock deep into you, opening up your virgin pussy as you began to struggle in his grip and cry. He told you ‘Keep crying and struggling you whore, it only makes me so much harder for you…’
His cock penetrated deeper than you’d ever felt anything, every thrust harder and harder into you. Your pussy leaked so much and made a mess, slicking up your asshole too. He pounded you without mercy and you asked for a kiss. He duly obliged and fucked you so good you couldn’t help but scream ‘Daddy! Yes daddy pleaseeee’ as you shuddered and came all over his cock.
With his big arms wrapped around you he picked you up and carried you to the bedroom. Here on the bed where he had fucked your mom so often, he manhandled you and made you bite the pillow so. Slapping your ass and rubbing his tip on your pussy he thrust into you hard and fast. Your moans and his grunts got louder as he rubbed his thumb on your asshole.
You shuddered but he told you he will fuck you in the ass later, today it’s all about violating your pussy though. You told him it feels so good as he grabbed you by the neck and pulled you close to him. Kissing your forehead he told you that your pussy feels so much better than your Mom’s. So tight and fucking beautiful. This alone made you cum on his cock again.
His strokes got slower and more erratic before he kissed your lips as he burst. His warm seed filling your pussy, your womb opening up to accept his seed. It’s done. Your step daddy fucked you harder than your wildest dreams.
Over the next few days, he would turn you into his sex slave. Every position, every hole. He recorded all of it and made you watch. Breaking you and turning you into a cock hungry whore for your Daddy.
And even when Mom came back from work overseas, he couldn’t help but sneak into your room. Covering your face with a pillow as he has his way with your pussy.
You now belonged to Dad, in every single way. And you loved every single second of it.

HELLO!
I HAVE A THEORY! And this is a theory regarding the newest character of Honkai: Star Rail, the rootin’ tootin’, flamboyant, brash, and trigger happy space cowboy of the Galaxy Rangers—Boothill! This will be posted on both Tumblr and AO3 for those who do not have either or for easier access! By the way, this theory contains mentions of leaks and in-game content, so if you don't want to get any spoilers, I advise not to read this theory at all.
For starters, I will admit that I haven’t played Honkai: Star Rail in a while due to…whatever reason I had, and one of those reasons was because of Twisted Wonderland! I was playing that for a while—still am—I was having a blast insulting Ace and having aneurysms over the students’ antics and methods of breaking people out (I’m lookin’ at you, Rook). It was great! Then, Star Rail showcases two new characters on their Twitter page for their newest planet known as Penacony, one of them being Boothill who a lot of people were upset with due to them wanting the characters, Sam and/or Firefly who unfortunately met her demise in the newest update, and…well, I fell head over heels for him and started saving for him (122 PULLS WITH 20 PITY BABY BUT HE’S MY FIRST FEATURED CHARACTER SO PRAY FOR ME). I kept up with leaks because I could care less about gameplay, stat kit, and character lore leaks since that’s the interesting part and helps me figure out if I want the newest character…like my Al-Haitham theory which did not age well, this theory about Boothill does stem from exhaustion from not sleeping, but I feel like this is a more coherent and sound theory than the last, and I have to say that I have to take this with a grain of salt—and I advise the same for you—because it’s merely a theory. I can be wrong on certain things, but without ado, I’ll start with what really feels like the backbone of this theory, and that is Boothill’s name: Boothill.
The Name
Tumblr media
So, just to give a little context, prominently in Asian media—most notably Japanese and Chinese entertainment from what I’ve seen as I played HoYo games and watched a lot of anime—characters tend to have name pun which correspond with their personality, physical design, talents, etc., to give people a little laugh and be like, “Ooooh! I get what they mean!” For example, Zhongli, in HoYoverse’s most popular game, Genshin Impact, written as 钟离 in simplified Chinese, is a pun of his departure—his retirement—as Rex Lapis: 钟 Zhōng being a homophone for the word for “clock” as it’s spelled exactly the same, while 离 Lí is a common word for “leaving” or “away”. Putting it together, it can be taken as “time of departure/leaving” or “off the clock” which foreshadowed Zhongli stepping down as Archon of Liyue.
With that knowledge in mind, I looked at Boothill's name and decided to Google it because I knew it was a pun of some sort! My only thought was that his name could have been a reference to a western (cowboy) film I never heard of which, to me, made sense as Boothill is modeled after stereotypical cowboys, and HoYo loves pop culture references with the Genius Invokation TCG which is a reference to the ever-so-popular card game, Yu-Gi-Oh, and how March 7th and Caelus made a reference to the movie, Fight Club, when the Moles were talking about the first rule of Fight Club…never talk about Fight Club! So, I thought Boothill was a nod to an old movie!
…No! A lot of people have already Googled it, but for those who probably don’t know, Boothill’s name comes from a burial grounds for gunfighters—with headstones engraved with the gunfighter’s name or “unknown” if the identity of the person has not been found—in the Old American West called a Boot Hill, and that name derives from the phrase “those who died with their boots on”, meaning that the gunfighter died rather violently. I did see someone say that the phrase could also mean that they were hanged, and that part is correct as the context of the expression changed in the early 19th century. However, I don’t believe that Boothill was hanged—although it is a possibility that I will keep in mind! Again, I have to take this theory with a grain of salt so I don’t die on that hill again, but seeing Boothill’s situation that he’s metal and wires from the chin down, he most likely died in a very extreme battle in the past since the only thing human about him…is his head!
His body must have been blasted to oblivion to where it was beyond saving, beheading him from the impact of whatever and whoever killed him. Now, some people may think that they probably just beheaded him or he was shot multiple times in the chest: other possibilities I will keep in mind, but that would mean he could have resulted as some kind of Frankenstein instead because if the body was still there, the Interastral Peace Corporation or IPC (the people who rebuilt Boothill) would use that since he has things to salvage like a heart or liver, etc., yet if we look at another Star Rail character named Luka who hails from the Underworld, he is missing an arm which is replaced with a mechanical one. That is because Luka saved a child in a fire involving a monster possibly from the Fragmentum, and his arm was chopped off by the ax the monster wielded, giving him the prosthetic he has today. So, if we compare Luka to Boothill in terms of how bad the conflict in Boothill’s past was, Boothill lost too much of his body from the chin down for the IPC to even save, leaving him with a full body prosthetic.
The Light Cone
Tumblr media
Now, the question that we have…why was Boothill killed? Who could’ve had such a grudge against him that they killed him off so violently? Well, that is where his Light Cone description comes in. Let’s focus on the middle of the description where it states:
“Some cruel memories resurfaced as the unforgettable hatred turned into a weak light in the darkness.”
The Light Cone entirely describes when Boothill was regaining consciousness and how he felt while briefly in a limbo before being greeted by a doctor in the IPC. What sticks out are these “cruel memories” and this “unforgettable hatred” that he has which calls back to what happened before he died. I’ll lead into this with another point I have to make this make sense a little bit: Boothill is a bounty hunter. Why do I think this? Well, we get a glimpse of this in-game in the newest update of Star Rail where Black Swan answers the phone to a mysterious Pathstrider of the Hunt who is part of the Galaxy Rangers (a gang who “swore to punish the wretched by any and all means”) who is tracking down Acheron, ready to kill her for reasons unknown as of right now: that was Boothill who has been confirmed to be a Pathstrider of the Hunt along with him being a Galaxy Ranger as he calls Acheron an “imposter” who is also a Galaxy Ranger, most likely hinting that Acheron is going undercover and infiltrating the group. We also know it is him from his line, “My bullets will find you”, since he is a gunslinger with a bullet motif on his hat and actual bullets around his waist and one hanging from his left ear.
Going back to the point I made, he’s obviously smart with pinpointing someone’s location such as Acheron’s and having at least some information on her like her being an Emanator. His Path, the Hunt, is said to “admire determination, ruthlessness, and tenacious behavior”, which fits Boothill’s Light Cone description as well as his possible reason for his alliance with the Galaxy Rangers and why his finger is ready to shoot Black Swan if she was an ally of Acheron stating to “get [her] forehead clean…and wait for [him]”. A bounty hunter would have to be ruthless with their target, showing little to no emotion as they are the person they are after, the person who wronged their client or the bounty hunter themselves, and it is obvious that Boothill is determined to gather any info from Black Swan to continue his hunt with Acheron.
Now, with that in mind…Boothill had to have been a bounty hunter in the past who was wronged as he had “cruel memories” returning to his mind, and he had anger in his heart that was weakening but helped him return to the living world. If I were to guess, he may have had a loved one who died at the hands of someone else and gained the skills to become a bounty hunter in his previous life to hunt that person down because he had “unforgettable hatred”, and that had to be at a level where he couldn’t let go especially if he had “cruel memories”, and those could probably be that he watched that same loved one get brutally tortured and/or murdered in front of him. As to who the loved one of Boothill could have been, it could have been anyone: his father, his mother, a sister, brother, a best friend—Unfortunately, we do not have the information to determine that for sure, but I truly believe that it could be someone he was very close to that was tortured and/or killed for, again, reasons unknown.
The IPC
From what we gathered in the leaks and what HoYo has already established, it was the IPC that brought Boothill back with unknown intentions, but to me for this theory, it’s because of his skills as a bounty hunter since he must have been the best hunter wherever he came from. However, Boothill has a new grudge against the IPC as the his reveal information stated that, “His flamboyant and brash actions were all to draw the attention of the Interastral Peace Corporation — the target of his revenge.” The man is very flamboyant as we can holler back to his Ultimate, his skill…the freaking JoJo poses—
Tumblr media
—(somebody in HoYo is a JoJo fan—IT'S BECOME INCREDIBLY CLEAR NOW) so I can see him causing havoc and being flashy to purposely attract their attention so he can properly get his revenge on them due to them making him into a cyborg which he isn’t happy about.
However…if I go back to the Light Cone description…at the very end, it said that Boothill “would no longer live for himself.” Sounds a little strange, doesn’t it? Here he is greeted by the doctor that saved him, and he’s clenching his new iron fists (literally speaking) because he knows what the IPC’s intentions are. If he’s no longer living for himself, that doctor would most likely have a sadistic tone when he welcomed him back because they experimented on him, testing him and his new body and using him for unspeakable things against his will, and why do I believe this?
Think back to Boothill’s gameplay and the leak of his gun’s range. That could be a reason, and a way I can describe it is by using Bucky Barnes, a.k.a. the Winter Soldier, in the MARVEL franchise. In the movie, Captain America: The First Avenger, Bucky was believed to be killed during a fall off a hijacked train in WWII in an attack against HYDRA, a sub-Nazi group led by the Red Skull, Steve becoming devastated by his best friend’s death. However, in Captain America: Civil War, it was revealed that Bucky was actually brainwashed, gaining a prosthetic arm (like Luka), and became a Super Soldier under HYDRA as they experimented to revive Dr. Erskine’s research for the original Super Soldier serum. Plus, HYDRA knew of his friendship with Steven Rogers and that Steve was alive but was going to expose S.H.I.E.L.D. for their lies, making him a threat. So, they trained and used Bucky as their line of defense since he was the only successful experiment that remotely compares to Captain America in strength and combat.
Because of Boothill’s skills in gunslinging, the IPC possibly saw this as an opportunity to have an effective line of defense in case something were to happen in their facility or if there was someone they needed to eliminate; they would have Boothill who had those qualifications to be their guard dog, but hearing how Boothill talks in-game for the first time, you could hear a hint of insanity in him as he keeps insisting that he will kill Acheron and Black Swan with lines such as “My bullets will find you”, “you best find a casket store on Penacony, and ask the owner to reserve a good quality casket for you”, “I’ll leave a round for you, so get that forehead clean and wait for me”, and “Are you askin’ me to write your will?” He wants to kill anybody who hurts him, still having that anger. That must have been how he felt when he was trapped in the IPC facility, going through experiment after experiment that broke him to the point that he couldn’t take it anymore as he is still human; he still has emotions and a mind of his own despite being 90% iron and wires.
Boothill knew, from the sound of that doctor’s tone, that he would be seen as their Super Soldier, a little toy they could dispose of if he was deemed useless; he was nothing but a heartless, soulless object to them which most likely broke him. Boothill has calmed down since his possible escape from an IPC facility and killing people in order to have a successful breakout, but he still has that pain inside his heart because of the possible abuse he faced that he’s trying to protect himself from being betrayed or used again which is why he’s so expressive and flamboyant.
He wants to live for himself and show the IPC just how human he was. However, he’s still showing off how strong he is as a warning to others of what he can do to them if they ever crossed him.
Now, I cannot stress enough that this is just a theory (A GAAAAAME THEORY), and I have to take this with a grain of salt because there is still a lot we don't know about Boothill regarding his past or his relationship with the IPC. Heck, a friend of mine and I believe that Boothill may not actually be his real name, but there's no evidence of his real name to even prove that point. This is all speculation, and what I gathered and thought about using any resources I have at my disposal to produce this, so please—for the love of the QUEEN OF HEARTS HERSELF—do not take this as actual, confirmed, or leaked information on Boothill's backstory since there are many unanswered questions. For now, I'll stick to what I got until Boothill is finally released!
And hopefully not die on that hill like I did with Al-Haitham...

2015 March 19th - The day you miss Changkyun the most
It’s a cloudy Thursday morning
On top of your allergies acting up, you’re miserable
You wish you had someone to hang out with
Your mind keeps bringing up Changkyun the day of graduation
How he was probably sad when you didn’t show up that night
Yet he never mentioned it
You both haven’t had much time to reach out to each other
The time zone had made it hard on you both to stay in touch
The last time you talked to him was a week after school started
He had already made friends because of course, he had
He wasn’t like you
Even with your poor mood, you were doing amazing in your classes
Because of course, you were - it was the one thing you were good at
Studying
You were moping as you grabbed an iced americano and made your way back towards the girls’ dorm
Are you that girl that lives in 5E?
Your head shoots up hearing your dorm number
There’s a boy just next to you, coffee in hand with short brown spiky hair and a lax smile that hides his tired eyes
The nervous flips in your stomach start-up, making you clutch your coffee tightly
Jisoo in 5B is my friend
She said there was a girl that was having troubles making friends
YN, right?
You open your mouth, trying to speak, but your throat feels tight
He gives you a smile, a real one this time
I’m Taeyong
I’m in 1C in the mixed dorm
Don’t hesitate to come to find me, okay?
You watch him as a group of guys beckon him away, calling his name as if to get it stuck in your head
It was weird for someone to come up to your first
Girls in your dorm, sure, but a guy? Someone who was friends with someone in the girls’ dorm? Not even like a boyfriend? Who was this guy?
You find him looking back and you turn away from him, fast to make your escape back into the girls’ dorm to work on your Korean Language homework
Your room door is cracked as you work on all the stuff that’s due within the next two weeks
Jisoo, Taeyong’s friend in 5B, her name comes up a few times
Apparently she and Taeyong are part of the group of students that are known as part of the group of ‘wannabe idols’ students
Most of those students are talked badly about, from what you remember when girls around you would gossip in class
Taeyong and Jisoo seem to be the exceptions
Both were already taken on by Top 3 companies which put them on a higher ground than most of that group of students
The fact that they seemed to be friendlier than most of the ‘wannabe idols’ is probably what held them on a pedestal
You don’t have much time to think on this when Jiyeon’s face takes over your iPad, smiling and waving to get your attention
BABY!!
Ji, hey!
I haven’t heard from you since graduation
How are your classes going?
Jooheon said that him and Changkyun are doing good - Can you believe that?
Them doing good without us?
(frowning) baby, did you have another fight with Jooheon?
(sniffles) I keep seeing him tagged in other girls’ instagram posts
He’s out partying while I’m here missing him
Does that seem fair??
Did you ask him about it?
Maybe he was just blowing off steam
That’s what he said!
How can you take his side?
Don’t you miss Kyun?
I miss all of you, Ji
I miss my friends
I miss you too :(
How are your classes going?
How’s community college?
My classes are okay
Newbie classes seem pretty lenient
Have you made any friends?
No :(
It’s still hard
Someone tried talking to me today and I felt sick
I’m sorry baby
I wish I was there so I could help
Jiyeon hangs up to run to her class
It’s late for you, so you shower and head to bed

My 2023 item review - Dockable Case (w/ Screen Protector and Thumb Grips) - Part 2/Final [Jan. 9th, 2023]
Back for this continuing review, my friends! While already covered the first parter back in Jan. 26th, I’m still catching up to do by installing my Switch system alongside my Joy-Cons. Before of doing that though, I wanted to make sure my Switch system needs cleaning and dusting. Which we’re in for today’s continuing review. However expect this one will be the final before moving to other items I’m eager to share.
⬆️ 14th through 15th Images
Here you can see I’ve two different wipes, a dust absorber, a cloth, and a screen protector onto my Switch for cleaning. There were came from the box after opening, BTW. Anyways, I handle well with the cleaning, wiping, and picking dust that I know what these are use for. At least I took about few minutes before moving to install the screen protector next.
Tumblr media
⬆️ 16th Image
Now for the next one, I’ve been carefully to install a screen protector on my Switch system. It’s a good thing I did just a bit right, but got it fit nonetheless. Though I recommend some stickers and an alignment frame tool for extra help. At least if I had the alignment frame tool for my Switch system, but I haven’t. 😅
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
⬆️ 17th through 19th Image Nevertheless, at least now I’m moving on to placing the dockable case shorty afterwards. I started on the back where I needed to be careful of installing. Thankfully as always, it fit right in where I took some time of showing off. Though I would’ve prefer changing the color for my dockable case than this, but probably next time. Regardless, it does stand out as I expected; especially for the material as I holding with my hands. I’ll get to that for later.

I’m now doing with my Joy-Cons that needed covering, but hold on. You may asking “are these new Joy-Cons instead of my original Joy-Cons? The gray ones?” Well ever since my original Joy-Cons had been worn out a bit; especially the last time where I show off the R button from the right sided Joy-Con. ➡️ Link Here
Not only that, It also came with an issue of stick drift which is unfortunate. Though I know I should get it fix by watching some tutorial videos like VK’s YouTube Channel if learning right. (Don’t know of fixing the R button, though) Nevertheless, I asked my mom to buy me second set of Joy-Cons; which happened back in April. 13th, 2021. That’s my story of it, but hoping to expect as I going through this review and saving my new Joy-Cons test later soon.
Anyways, back to setting up my new Joy-Cons to cover up; which I have when placing from bottom to top. Though I had to switch up from top to bottom, but at least fits right up as well. Just making sure it doesn’t have some scratches for each Joy-Cons. On the plus side, it’s what I’m hoping for so I don’t leave out any smudge stuff when holding my hands. Mostly my right sided Joy-Con when I’m pressing the A button for example.

And now it’s finally completed! All secure with a screen protector upfront. As I picked up with my hands, it felt smooth due to the materials of my dockable case. I looked up that it made with "shock-absorbent and anti-scratch PC" material. Sounds promising, right? I'll see if it can hold up until I'll get a new case soon. This time, I’m picking a theme like blue or the Super Mario themed case.

Not done with this review though, I have a set of joy-con thumb grips/caps to pick on. There are ten total of caps in two each: red, blue, black, and purple with paws. The difference between four black caps is smaller while the other was a bit big; though at least not way too big. If I had to pick though is going with red and blue for each joy-cons. Does make sense of having both new controllers I’m having. However how well protective for each controlling sticks on top? They’re pretty alright that it made in different material. I tested out when pressing and moving them; especially in games like Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Very appreciate of using the caps so far, but I’m okay with the red and blue ones.
My Overall Thoughts:  After owning one of last year’s Christmas gifts, the dockable case and other accessories is something I’m hoping for. These includes a screen protector right after cleaning and ten total thumb grips/caps. The main item itself though was good too. It’s made with "shock-absorbent and anti-scratch PC", but felt smooth when holding both hands as to playing games in handheld mode. Do hope this holds longer as it should and to everyone can get one of those. If you had your Nintendo Switches that is. My mom ordered from Amazon.com, BTW. ⬇️

Hope you guys enjoying my first review of 2023, but as always be back for more throughout this year. For now though, I’m taking some breaks until another day arrives.

Do you have a sense of when the next skirt restock will be? And will the new, smaller size be available? Sorry if there was an email about this and I missed it!
new smaller size won’t be in the store until we get the first round of skirts from our new manu, which should be some time in february, tho we will also have to inventory, quality check, do a photoshoot, take videos, make new listings etc so they don’t overlap w the old sizing
ideally we want to sell thru the current skirts before we start selling the new ones to minimize the confusion but most of the skirts we have left have some form of minor defect to them, which takes extra time to list because we have to do extensive qc and categorize them by defect
we’re hoping to have a skirt restock this thursday (the 19th) but just based on the extra work + how much ppl have been out of the office due to holidays, illness and other travel it might need to be next thursday
i haven’t made a mailing list email yet bc devin hasn’t given me a definitive date and i prefer to only give the mailing list definitive info

[ mimi keene | cis woman | she/her | twenty-five ] ——   welcome to grimrose, yasmina abadi. it’s cool that you’re here, you know. haven’t you heard of the history of this place… anyway, how’s being a local who has been in town for twenty years, especially since you spend most of your days as a librarian and radio show host? also, not that it’s a bad thing, of course, but i’ve heard people say you can be a little distrusting more than you are loyal… but that’s just coming from people who are bored here, i promise. to me, you remind me of fake plastic trees by radiohead and the dim lights of the trailer park, years of research of beings not of this earth, and loving mysteries so much she became one. hope to see you around, mina.
full name — yasmina abadi nickname(s) — mina, yas, abadi name meaning — jasmine flower age — twenty-five date of birth — february 19th place of birth — sugar hill, new hampshire  current location — grimrose, new hampshire gender — cis-woman pronouns — she/her sexual orientation — demisexual, queer religion — islam though non practicing / agnostic / it’s complicated occupation — librarian during the day, radioshow host for harbinger cross by night  education level — masters in library science, bachelors in ufology ( yes she did study this !! ) family — arham abadi, serafina lassiter finances — poor spoken languages — arabic, english, some farsi voiceclaim — mimi keene
inspos: velma dinkley (scooby-doo), boo (fleabag), cassie ainsworth (skins), eleven (stranger things), susan storm (fantastic four), waymand wang (everything everywhere all at once), topanga lawrence (boy meets world), willow rosenberg (buffy the vampire slayer), will byers (stranger things), rogue (x-men), alice cullen (twilight lol)
tw: mentions of alcohol abuse but non descriptive, neglectful parents
yasmina was raised by a single father that never really how to father. it hadn’t always been like that, she thinks, but it’s been so long she doesn’t really remember any differently. her mother pushed out of the family because of her dad. it’s just been the two of them, though as yasmina’s gotten older his health has been declining due to his inability of letting go and putting down the drinks. while yasmina is sympathetic that not many of his friends had made it out of the war she still misses her dad and who he used to be.
before he became who he was now he had shared his love and interests of all things cryptids and aliens, wanting to believe that they were so much more than themselves. the two had so much in common when mina was a child, looking up at the stars and wondering why. though as mina grew up the more she had to become to provider for the two of them as her dad’s health was starting to decline and he had become more erratic. but she loved her father, it was them against the world, at least that was what he would say.
they moved to grimrose when property was cheap, but they could only really afford the trailer park but to mina it had been a paradise as it said in the name. she remembers many trips to the forest looking for the entities that would haunt the town but would think that maybe they were misunderstood. not every spirit could truly ever be evil, they all had a story to tell. and if you were to ask her she would claim that she’s seen much of the folklore and absolutely revels in it.
high school wasn’t easy, it was hard to make friends but she excelled by staying late and finishing her homework and extracurricular activities, she managed to graduate a year early than her classmates which helped her in getting her masters degree to work at the library. she had packed up her car quickly after she graduated to take a trip around the states to all the hot spots that claimed to have been alien sightings and paranormal activity, during this small gap year she interviewed a lot of people of what they had seen and started to pick up where her father had left off on his book about ufology. she’s still writing this book to this day.
not long after did she start the process of getting her radio show which is now called harbingers cross, it’s a late night show with not that many listeners but she goes into a deep dive of all the lore that grimrose has to offer, and while it’s not popular it’s very loved by those that do turn in! she frequently tries to get guests on and tell their stories about what they’ve seen in grimrose and does a lot of research into the folklore. the show is her passion project and her pride and joy. her main focus of her radioshow is to give skeptics and people that may not understand some perspective that while their town is different that doesn’t mean that it’s bad.
personality wise she’s a ride or die for anyone that’s close to her, will often make a big batch of whatever she’s cooking and bring it over to whoever that needs it. she can look mean ( due to her resting bitch face ) but she’s just quiet and has a lot of love to give.
headcanons:
she found a stray kitten in the alleyway outside of greasy spoons diner, and decided to take it home and nurse it back to health since it was missing part of it’s leg. she named it bitty and its now a fully healthy cat and pretty much takes it with her everywhere. and i mean literally everywhere. if you’re at the library the cat will be roaming around near her or on her lap.
has performed seances and used a ouija board in the forest no less. not really terrified of much of the folklore honestly has a lot of empathy for all the entities and thinks maybe they could use a friend.
lowkey wants to be possessed??? girl help???
she has a very deep connection to the ghosts that haunt grimrose, she claims she’s a little clairvoyant while that may or may not be true, i’m sure she’s invited plenty of ghosts and is probably haunted but like… who’s to say ya know

Blog Post #1
Hello! My name is Dana Almasaeid and I'm a native Arabic speaker from Jordan. My name has a special meaning in Arabic, as it translates to "the most beautiful, perfectly sized and valuable pearl", which my mother often references due to me being the only daughter among three brothers. It's an honor for me that my name has been given the same title as pearls found in the Persian Gulf. As proud as I am of my own name, there are times when I wish I could be someone else—someone like Bryce from Crescent City. She’s a woman who wears her outfits as armor and fights against sexist men with unwavering confidence. Even though I love my own name, if I had to change it, she would be my choice! If you haven’t guessed already, I LOVE reading. When I was in elementary school in Jordan, I did the announcements and had to read many books. My love for reading started from there, when moving to the U.S., I neglected reading because I had a whole new language to perfect. However, despite being surrounded by bullies in middle school at Rockland and feeling overwhelmed by high school, my passion for reading remained strong and helped me overcome these challenges.
My first year of high school was an absolute whirlwind, I met the most amazing teacher, Mrs. Armand. However, my last day was truly freedom, I wanted the whole graduation ceremony to be over with so I can finally enjoy being out Pine Bush. On March 19th, 2015, I took part in something I’ll never forget. The Spanish department at my school was participating in culture week, and my teacher asked me to recite the pledge of allegiance in Arabic over the loudspeaker during morning announcements. I truly felt transported back to my elementary days so of course I said yes. However, when I finished reciting the pledge in Arabic, the reactions were instantaneous. As soon as I returned to the hallway after announcements were over, people started looking at me differently. It didn’t help that I was wearing a hijab - it was like a neon sign for every racist person to start spewing hate at me. People were calling the board constantly, American flags were being flown on cars, and people were writing “if you are in America, speak English” on their windshields.
Tumblr media
Things got even worse once the principal announced an apology for what had happened over the loudspeaker a few days later. That same apology was addressed to those very same people who had been bashing me and my religion just days prior! It felt like such a slap in the face - like none of it mattered or made any real difference. Fortunately, I had some amazing friends who stood by my side throughout this whole ordeal. They encouraged me not to give into the pressure or succumb to fear or hate, but instead focus on understanding each other’s differences.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This experience gave me insight into what life is like for many minorities in our society – it showed me just how pervasive racism can be and how hard we must work as a society to combat it. In hindsight, this event has become both my favorite and least favorite moment from high school; while it opened my eyes to the prevalence of racism in my hometown, it also taught me valuable lessons about standing up for what you believe in despite societal pressures. Looking back, if there’s one thing I could do differently during that time period it would be to stand up directly against the principle who enabled such behavior, even if that means spitting in his face.
However, when I'm not exploring different genres through books, I like playing the Ukulele and watching sci-fi dystopian films — they're one of my favorite genres in the film world! One movie that really sticks out in my mind is Tau. Written by Noga Landau and directed by Federico D'Alessandro, this science-fiction thriller follows a woman named Julia who gets kidnapped by an AI named Tau. The movie takes viewers on a wild ride through twists and turns as Julia attempts to escape Tau's control while he tries to learn more about human behavior. However, my least Favorite TV show is the Flash. This show made me interested in computer science and coding. But when the classes became too challenging for me, I had to look for another major that meshed with my interests. After experimenting with public health, which proved to be boring, I realized that communication was the perfect choice. Communications provides many career options such as marketing, public relations, or media. I celebrated that decision with making the ultimate chocolate cake for a friend who suggested communication would be perfect for me.
One of the most popular questions that people like to ask each other is, "If you had to choose your last meal on earth, what would it be?" For me, the answer has always been an easy one: three dates and zam zam water. Let me explain why I chose this combination of food and drink. Dates provide a great source of energy and have many health benefits such as helping with digestion, improving skin health, promoting bone health, and reducing blood pressure. Plus, they're delicious! Zam zam water is a sacred type of water that comes from a well that was miraculously opened thousands of years ago in Mecca by Ishmael's father Abraham. According to Islamic tradition, this special kind of water has healing properties both physically and spiritually. It's said to help cure ailments such as liver disease and mental illness as well as provide spiritual nourishment for the soul. As someone who believes in its power, I'd love to experience its effects at least once before I leave this world!

SO's US Book Tour : Arkansas
Tumblr media
True Grit
By Charles Portis
I have never read a Western.  I haven’t ever wanted to read a Western.  But when flipping through the list of books for Arkansas - I tripped over True Grit and thought, why not, I’m branching out.  After struggling to get through The Monkey Wrench Gang, I worried that I was going to find it difficult to get through.  Turns out that was not the case! I was pleasantly surprised at the ease in which I got through this one.  It is a good story.  It’s not my favorite, nor will I probably ever pick up another Western, but I enjoyed it much more than I thought I’d might.
This might be the simplest book I’ve read so far, which is fine.  A book doesn’t need to be overly complicated to be enjoyable, and I think it works in the book’s favor to be a straightforward adventure-slash-revenge story.
Written in the late 1960s but set in the 1870s, the narrative is that of an older Mattie Ross recalling about how when she was 14-years-old her father was murdered by a hired hand - Tom Chaney - and how she set about bringing him to justice by hiring a US Marshall by the name of Rooster Cogburn.  And that’s really it - the book, like the narrator, is pretty focused on that plot.
Honestly, when I first started reading, I was a little skeptical of a grown man writing from the perspective of a fourteen year old girl.  And, admittedly, Mattie Ross doesn’t really sound like a girl her age - 19th century or otherwise.  But I think it actually works in the novel’s favor.  I really appreciated Mattie’s focused drive and her shrewd observations.  She isn’t one to mess around.  She isn’t one to get caught up in overly emotional sentimentality.  Her world is harsh - but she still tells it like it is.  Sometimes, it is to comic effect - having deadpan reflection of rather obscene human nature is pretty funny at times.  But the ‘true grit’ the novel’s title refers to is really Mattie - and her unwavering pursuit to bring justice to her father’s murderer.
It’s funny - all through the novel, Mattie tells everyone she meets that her one goal is to take down Tom Chaney for the murder of her father.  It becomes a mantra, and becomes strikingly similar to Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride, who repeats his revenge mantra to anyone he meets.  In fact, the characters are similar in design when you bring them down to a base level.
Anyway -- while I doubt it’s that realistic that a fourteen year old during the 1870s would get away with as much as Mattie does, I like her as a character -- much more than I thought I’d might.
The other major character is Rooster Cogburn, a washed out, gritty old US Marshal - who has a lot of baggage carried around from his colorful past.  Part of the charm of the novel comes from the unlikely pairing between Cogburn and Mattie, which never really dissolves into a found father/daughter trope, which again, is a nice change of pace.  Cogburn, begrudgingly, ends up respecting Mattie in the end, and they bond in the way people on adventure do, but it always is billed as a temporary alliance -- one that Mattie appreciates from the lens of an adult, but never grows beyond the mission they set out to accomplish.
The first half of the book details Mattie searching out Cogburn.  I never really thought of Arkansas as being a part of the old west, but the backdrop works really well -- Arkansas being on the edge of the frontier.  It kind of reminded me (due to my limited engagement with the time period and location) of those frontier towns you start in at the beginning of the old computer game Oregon Trail - where you get your goods and stuff before setting out across the west to get to the Pacific coast.  The second half of the book details going out into ‘Indian Territory’ - the unclaimed wilderness on the Arkansas/Oklahoma border - where, really, there are no laws and anything can happen.
They’re joined by a Texas Ranger named LaBoeuf, who is out to get Chaney for killing a Texas senator.  Of course, LaBoeuf and Cogborn don’t get along - and LaBoeuf isn’t really thrilled that Mattie is tagging along to bring Chaney down.  But he becomes instrumental in tracking down the gang of thieves Chaney is hanging out with.
Tom Chaney, himself, isn’t really in the novel that much - and to be honest, he’s kind of flatly dumb and villianous.  There are much livelier characters even within the gang of ‘bad guys’ that Chaney is hanging around, that the confrontation seems, well, a little anticlimactic if I’m being honest.  But the purpose of the novel is less about the destination and more about the journey into the wilderness, and the resolve of Mattie, Cogburn, and LaBoeuf at bringing the outlaw in.
One of the aspects of the novel that I did find fascinating is the detail of the worldbuilding.  The novel makes reference to the American Civil War, and to the politics of the 1870s.  There are references to how life is different in Arkansas, to Texas, to the East Coast.  I don’t know much about Charles Portis - but I have to believe he’s fairly knowledgeable about the time period he’s writing about.  Not only is he able to drop these references to the time authentically, the novel itself feels like it was written back in the 19th century.  In some ways - it reminds me of all those classic stories we had to read in school that documented and showcased life during a specific era.
I believe this is one of those novels that is considered a modern classic - and I can see why.  I liked it well enough for what it was (though I doubt I’ll ever feel like going back to this world) and can understand its popularity - especially to those who enjoy stories set during this time period.  While it may not be for everyone, it very clearly is a Western, I’d definitely recommend it - and am glad I picked it up.

My Sonic Gear Quatro 2 USB Speakers Review (w/ my paper dolls) - Full [Dec 15th, 2022]
Hi! Here’s my (final) item review this December (2022), and just like in November, I decided to make a full review in one sitting post for the second time.🪑🙂
So, this is my full review of the Sonic Gear Quatro 2 USB Speakers (featuring my Paper Dolls).🖥️🔊🙂
BTW: If you haven’t watch my revealing parcel for this particular item, then please [CLICK ME!].
So, without further ado, let’s get started:
1st & 2nd Image(s): ↑
• So, here's the box itself. Looks very promising, and the blue background is taking cues from the Logitech boxes. I mean, try to type "Logitech blue box" on Google search & compare it to the box that you've shown it above. I think my paper dolls agrees. 📦🙂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3rd & 4th Image(s): ↑
• Out of the box are the main item & a Guarantee Card / User Manual written in the Indonesian language. 📤🔊📄 Mmmmm, I don't think I won't be filling out this thing. 🤔 Anyway, the speaker channels are wrapped in plastic, so why not unwrap them right away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5th & 6th Image(s): ↑
• That's better! My paper dolls said, "they look gorgeous!". Yup, can't wait to hear their sound quality. 😃 But, let's dive through their details & comparisons before we proceeded to the sound test. 🙂
Tumblr media
7th Image: ↑
• From left to right, you can see the volume rocker, a 3.5mm aux jack, and a normal USB type A (2.0A).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
8th to 12th Image(s): ↑
• Alright, comparison time with my old Genius SP-U115 USB speakers. You've already seen it during my review, right? Heck, I even used it as my paper dolls' stand to see it through. But, I digress. Anyways, when it comes to design, they're completely different; from side to side, and even their bottom feet. In terms of height, they're both 4 inches using my ruler measurement 📏, with the Genius speaker being a bit taller than the Sonic Gear speaker. My paper dolls said, that they'll gonna missed, my old speaker. Don't worry, my old speaker will always stay in our home when everyone is more needed than I am. 😊
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
13th to 17th Image(s): ↑
• Now, let's talk about some features of the Sonic Gear Quatro 2. These speakers feature a quad bass effect on each channel to deliver a deep, boom & powerful bass when I tune on the music. Sounds quite promising here. Plus, there's a volume rocker which you've already seen it, considering an audio standard. And finally, a moldy brush aluminum finish for their unique stylish. Yeah, well, technically it's made out of hard plastic that mimics a metal material. But, mind you, it looks pretty well presented. 👌
Tumblr media Tumblr media
18th & 19th Image(s): ↑
• Their plastic wiring is solid & not thin, with the total length of 1.5 mm long. And you may wondering what's on the written behind the volume rocker? It says, "SONICGEAR - An original design by sonicgear lab, Singapore. Protected by international copyright law. Sonicgear is a trademark of sonicgear lab PTE. Ltd. Singapore." Yeah, ummm... That's something, to be honest. 🤔
Tumblr media
20th Image: ↑
• Alright, now that we're down the details, let's get this thing started! And my paper dolls are excited to hear. 😁🖥️🔊
My Recorded video 🎦📲: ↑ (Pls watch my video):
• Alright, now that my old speaker is finally out of my PC's audio port, my new PC speaker is all set up & ready to play some tunes! Unfortunately, I can't play any music in public due to 🛑copyright issues⚠️. Instead, I bang the volume adjuster sound as my sound test tool. But, don't worry, I'll share my experience of using the Sonicgear Quatro 2.
• Now, I played it for a couple of hours, and I have to say... The sound quality is "Average". Sure it's balanced, and sometimes a bit of crisp, but also muddy when I listen to bass-related music. And that quad bass thing is a mixed bag to some, including myself. But, given that this is a budget speaker, I guess I might hard to accept. After all, I get what I paid for. So yeah, bottom line, the sound quality is "Average" (if not great), plus I could hear the voice (decently) & the separation is A-Okay. 👌 Uh yeah, I forgot. Did I mention, that there's a little lighting on the volume rocker & also behind indicating that it's turn on? Yup, that's quite interesting.
Overall & price tag:
• The Quatro 2 from Sonicgear is quite alright. All the important ones are present, however, the bass (including the so-called "quad bass") could be used a little tuning, or maybe a different quality of bass drive for good results. But, that's just my opinion (so, I digress). Regardless, the Sonicgear Quatro 2 is a pretty decent speaker that will be suited for any computer lovers/users (especially gamers) 🙂👌🖥️🔊, except for bass enthusiasts. You're better off browsing a good bass speaker, elsewhere. 😕
• As for the price tag of Sonicgear Quatro 2, It costs ₱377.00 🏷️💵($ 6.77 US) with discounted price from Lazada PH 🇵🇭🛒🌐, and I purchased it back in Dec. 21st, 2020. Unfortunately, it is no longer available from the online seller, but, you could still find it somewhere (e.g. Amazon, Aliexpress, etc.). But, is it worth it? Well, for me,(like I said) I get what I paid for. And I could revert to my old speaker if I want a true quality sound. 🤷
Well, that's the end of my 2022 review! I'll see you in 2023.
And you haven’t seen my previous topic, then I’ll provide some links down below. ↓😉

The Warren Wilson Confessionals, part I
this is good shit, just roll with it ok
I graduated undergrad at a mediocre commuter college I picked because it was in walking distance to my house and I wanted to have a degree so I could do big boy grad school and ruin my life. But I got my Education from the college I went to the first time round, a small progressive liberal arts school in swannanoa, NC that ranked #1 on the USNWR/Princeton review “high times” ranking, meaning it was the most Weed college, in 2009. It’s got a graduation rate in the 40th percentile usually, sometimes dipping as low as 30%. The weed stuff is not why I enrolled, I quit weed in 2007 due to it being always unpleasant to experience, and graduated to booze, never looking back, but I know and also imagine that some if not many of the students picked the school for that reason. The school is called Warren Wilson College. It’s situated in the blue ridge mountains, breathtakingly beautiful area deep in the hills of the old Country, the land of the mountaineers. Bluegrass music—a commercialized copy of a copy of High Lonesome banjo music carried over from the folk tunes of the British Isles and jumbled up with the slave song tradition of the Black African mountaineers’ slaves—all originated in those hills, in the area encompassing Swannanoa, Asheville, Wilkesboro, Weaverville, Black Mountain, Boone, Ingles, Chowtime, the Sunderland smoke hut, Sage circle smoke hut, and the pond down by the R&R/shop crew building. You haven’t drank booze til you’ve drank the real moonshine, a very rare get, from the source, from that selfsame old long bearded hillbilly (a term of pride) you’ll find if you put “moonshiner” into YouTube. One glug, not nasty and wretched like the Old Crow we normally got to drinking, but smoothly poisonous, no taste, just Throat Inferno, and you are finished, you better be sure your moral intuitions are on perfectly good at age 19 because the next 12 hours are gonna be pure Brain Stem, pure id.
I chose the school because I planned to apply to the Radical Schools, misunderstanding how college works—schools like Reed, Evergreen, anything in the vicinity of what used to be Antioch College before the pre-fully-formed-brained student body took due advantage of its anarcho-libertarian spirit and wrecked the place. Much more on that theme to come. I was tremendously lazy so I only applied to one school and I got into it so that’s where I went.
From the start I was enamored with virtually everyone. As in, I wanted to fuck every astral-projection-believing one of the hippie girls, and two or three of their fella counterparts. Three days into orientation I found myself lugging a forty oz of steel reserve through the French broad River at 1am with a bunch of people whose names I mostly didn’t remember yet but who remembered me, all or most of us naked. I yelled some inanity and someone hollered back “is that Elliot that definitely sounded like Elliot”. I was beloved! Near-universally! Or so it felt! RHLW (Receding Hairline Will) adopted my mannerisms and joke style, which made me wince and probably at one point or another ruthlessly Cuss, but of course it was flattery. I had *fans*! Wheeee! It wouldn’t last
They housed me in what I and others were convinced was the Dorm for Fuckups, a hideous 19th century workhouse lookin building called Sunderfunk (Sunderland), funk referring to the odor it supposedly emitted. I was shacked up with this fella Eric. We didn’t have a lick in common back then at least (now he’s living off the land after having lived in Kolkata, India, and he’s hip to Marxism and things), but we were as close as two fellers of the same height, one with muscle mass (him) and both with long brown hair, terrible personal hygiene, near indifference to academic and work responsibilities, etc. could be. So I guess we had much in common, really. I’d kiss him on the cheek out in the Sunderland smoke hut and he’d smack me in the face and we’d laugh and roll Bugler cigs. We wore each other’s clothes indifferently to who owned what, it wasn’t some communal ownership pact, we just didn’t give a fuck. “Ah man you busted on my minutemen shirt,” I half lamented, cracking the dorm window so we could smoke inside while we drank inside to get ready to smoke and drink outside. Eric had a Southern rasp and an odd sort of lisp, his near functional illiteracy matched by his Faulknerian way with the spoken word. “Listen L,” referring now to the pulling-out phase of the sex he was beginning to have with the first crush I had, the one I stared into with my head craned, the two of us on opposite ends of the Smoke Hut day two of orientation, her serene coolness and piercing mien, until she had to give in and laugh and say oh fuck off, “any textile or fabric in the vicinity is fair game.” I didn’t do a single load of laundry the entire year, including my sheets, and neither did he. But we were cool, and we fucked. Well, eventually I fucked. But we were definitely fucking cool.

Researching the Transcript
Interrogate the Truth:
“ Social justice as a concept- I’ve done my research on this- it goes back to the 19th century. Because that’s a time when in this part of the world, in the West, you had industrialization kicking off; you had countries forming empires, so suddenly there was a need for social inequality because that’s how countries get on- you know, you exploit people, you take from places, you colonize, you have workers at different levels, so the concept of needing justice in society became really sharp in the West. So, your curriculum has to have a position that factors that in, because there is social injustice built into society. Individual people need to shape their own arguments, but I can tell you what I believe to be true about social justice. A lot of people can’t because they haven’t been invited to interrogate it. So, I feel as though the curriculum needs to be a place that fosters a spirit of interrogating the accepted truths and norms and the status quo, seeking to discover what actually happened, with a view to putting your best foot forward in a deliberate and benevolent direction of ‘can we make things better and fairer?’ ”
Before looking into how I’d visually represent this transcript I began researching into some of the key parts to get a greater understanding of the meaning behind it.
Towards the beginning of the transcript 19th century industrialisation and imperialism is mentioned and appears to be a key point in his message. Industrialisation is “ the development of industries in a country or region on a wide scale.”, this took place in Britain in the late 18th and early 19th century where we saw social inequality and injustice rise as a whole due to many factors taking place at the time. A further contributing factor to this social inequality was the British empire which happened to take place at a similar time to industrialisation.

http://foundations.uwgb.org/cause-and-effect/#:~:text=The%20Industrial%20Revolution%20saw%20a,marked%20the%20beginnings%20of%20Industrialization.
Toward the end of the transcript the conversation changes its focus from the past to the present and what we need to start doing in order to ensure as a society we don’t keep repeating these same mistakes. What's discussed by the speaker is changing the curriculum and what's being taught to the younger generation; as a huge factor in what will cause positive change in our society comes from a successful well diverse education.

Looking into this subject matter has given me inspiration as to the visual research I will conduct and aim to replicate in my final piece of animated work.

#105 - Random Access Memories - Daft Punk (2013)
History test, listen up! There will be 4 questions with one right answer. That'll be on the final, trust me, so remember this. Now the question is: “What was the most popular song in 2013 according to the Billboard top 100?”
1. Thrift Shop by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
2. Try by Pink
3. The A-Team by Ed Sheeran
4. Get Lucky by Daft Punk
If you answered D, then you are wrong, it is A, which is dumb. That aside, we all know what Daft Punk was right? I know, that you know, that I know that you know that we know that I know what Daft Punk was. Right, we are on the same page, the same spectrum as a whole. Everyone knows the history of the robot-music-making duo, and everyone knows the discography of Daft Punk and what they have done for EDM and French house music. Their status was considerably large even with their fairly small discography of albums, but even then they had a quality over quantity type of mindset. We also know that they broke up in 2021, not due to a falling out between the two but because they wanted to move away from Daft Punk and sort of retire from music. The Daft Punk name is still used to this day, and even if the group doesn’t make any more music, things are still going strong for the two robot dudes.
Now, why am I saying all this, well it is just some context too who they are, after all, just to give this review some groundwork. Now let us travel back in time to 2013, specifically April 19th. You tune in to the radio and suddenly you hear sounds that were long dead in the past. Disco is fun and funky disco too, to be specific. You realize this is not just some disco hit you haven’t heard before, but instead a Daft Punk song. In 2013 Daft Punk decided to shift genre-defining gears and instead make a disco album. Long story short this album practically shaped the early 2010s, during a time when most hits were all fun and bouncy pop tunes. Disco would fit right in with the sound of the time, and it was as evident with how big this album was. I am not that good with memory when it comes to years before 2014 was a thing, but I do remember seeing the album cover a lot. Almost 10 years later and I have now finally listened to this hour-long disco tribute, and I gotta say, it is really good.
Like, no wonder this was everywhere in 2013 because this is the cream of the crop in terms of disco music. Give Life Back To Music is such a fun start, blending Daft Punk’s iconic robotic singing with some hard-hitting guitars and melodies that make me want to boogie. I think this song and album’s purpose is to boogie, which I think it succeeds in, however, each song has its quirks and qualities, and Give Life Back To Music is merely an appetizer for what is to come.
This is as evident with The Game Of Love, where we get a more smooth, almost sensual side of the group with wavy synths underlying a clear mood. I think this entire concept is love. Self-love, love of music, and other types of love. It isn’t simple love songs where the singer just says they love a pretty girl, no, it is love songs that are worth loving. The Game Of Love sets home what this album is all about and how it is worth it to listen to.
Speaking of the love for music, Giorgio by Moroder is practically all about that, where a German (or French, I cannot tell) man named Giovanni Giorgio, but everybody calls him Giorgio, talks about the future of music. Daft Punk was seen as the band of the future per se, even more so than some new wave groups. This song is a nearly 10-minute ensemble for the love of music as a whole, and this love transcends everyone, as shown with Giorgio over here. Plus this song is also highly iconic due to the beginning, where after Giorgio finishes his speech, the song really begins and the synths building up and up make for a fun experience. This is one of the best songs on this album.
With that, it is fair to get slow again with Within. A lot less sensual than The Game Of Love but still contains a flavor of affection. It is very slow, with no real builds or payoffs, just a nice slow-moving song to get the mood down a notch after the 9-minute lavish that was Giorgio. While it isn’t my favorite, I think it can be a tad shorter and I would honestly prefer it to be instrumental since I think the robot voice is kind of off, I do see this as a nice song to squeeze in between the fun and bouncy elements with the slow and methodical.
I think Instant Crush might be the most traditional Daft Punk piece here, but it continues the whole funky flair this album exudes. This is also the first song to have a collaboration, that being Julian Casablancas. Julian’s use of making his voice sound robotic through the upbeat melodies is an aesthetic on its own. His voice is definitely in tune with everything around him, and the more electronic flavors I am getting from this salivates the album’s palette. It is a colorful painting of electronic dance music and disco all in one.
However, I must say that while this album has a long track of great; sometimes masterfully done songs, it does have a break in the middle of this streak. This break has to be Lose Yourself To Dance. I don’t know why, but I think this song is the worst on this album. It is way too cut and dry, and what I mean by that is that it feels like this song doesn’t have any effort put into it unlike every other song here. It is way too poppy for even disco standards, and it is sadly the only song that I cannot seem to make myself like. It has good melodies and a good hook, but the stuff in it and how they utilize these melodies and hooks make it feel very lackluster, and pretty much skippable to me.
However, that small dip doesn’t compare to the humongous leap that is what I consider a two-part suite of sorts with Touch and Get Lucky. Touch in itself is a beautiful spectacle of what the album has for itself. It is a song that captures everything this album is. The love, the dance, the harmonies, and the beauty of all that is. No sliver of this song is left unbeknownst to what the band can truly do, and because of this, I can safely say that this song in itself is a masterpiece, through and through. Its little brother of getting Lucky is also very well done I’d say where Touch expressed the beauty of love, and Get Lucky expresses love in its primordial aspect. I want to keep this review pretty safe for work, but I think it’d be odd to not say what this song is really about. It is literally about sex, but not in a crude or degrading way. It is how romance can just click, how both parties can love each other and feel comfortable no matter what. In that statement, it doesn’t lust, it still is love, and I think that is important to understand. Both these two songs, combined into this lovely suite make these two some of the best there is on this record, especially in regards to Touch.
Strangely enough, Daft Punk sort of pulls a David Bowie and have the next half of this record be a lot more experimental. Beyond sort of doesn’t throw many punches but is still a great melody. No, the real deal comes in with Motherboard. This track does feel like their most technical and non-commercial song here. It combines disco with the more Kraftwerk-inspired electronic music we got in the 70s, being danceable, but highly proficient. If the first half of this album was about the fun of what love is, the second half is surely about the introspection of what love is.
And I’d be, kind of, right with Fragments of Time. While it isn’t the same as Motherboard where it is pretty experimental, I do still think this song does showcase the inner workings of how love is, being a little more technical and a bit softer than those hard-hitting disco tracks. This and Doin’ It Right do showcase the more left-side showing of love. It is an emotion used in the context of a more research basis, where love blossoming can be solved by taking a keen eye on things. I will be honest, the second half is the weaker part. It is kinda sad too, but I think it’d be a given due to the number of tracks on here, and the fact that generally speaking this album did have a dud before in the first half. It is a long album, being one hour, so where songs in the first part land, it’d be hard to compete for that landing when you are listening to songs that may not have enough juice in them.
However, I think the album does end with a high, rather than a low, with Contact. It is an electronic soundscape that just builds and explodes everywhere, practically ending the album off with exploding static. It leaves me, and most likely many others, feeling satisfied after reaching this conclusion. This conclusion is a definite highlight of this album, and I think with such a high ending, I feel a sense of joy. This album is about love, and it wraps you in a tight love bow in the end.
This album is such a fun trip, not a definitive masterpiece, but it does contain masterpieces in it. It’s disco done right, it is pop done right, and it’s what Daft Punk is and will always be. There is no way for Daft Punk, no matter what, there will always be a will for Daft Punk, even if the group is long gone. This album is pretty much a requirement, feel the joy of love with this album.
4.5/5

Thank you for posting a review on the book Evolution & Revolution Chinese Dress 1700s - 1990s. It’s so disappointing how the book potentially could’ve been good. What are your favorite books on Chinese fashion history?
Hi, great that you found the review useful! To be completely honest, I haven't really read any books on Chinese fashion before I started this blog, because I mostly used online resources like museums' websites, archaeology reports and other blogs. I actually started this blog in the hopes that people might recommend me some books😅 And I only ever read about the Ming, Qing and republican era so my knowledge is very limited.
Anyway, here are some books people recommended to me that I found great, some that I'm currently reading and some I know to be objectively good:
Ming Dynasty
Q版大明衣冠图志 (2011) 董进著
A classic made by the popular fashion history blogger 撷芳主人 (real name Dong Jin), this book is the ultimate compilation of Ming Dynasty looks illustrated by the most adorable drawings. It has basically everything you need to know about Ming Dynasty garments from informal civilian fashion and theater costumes to the most formal court dress and military uniforms. My only quibble with this book is that it doesn’t specify the decade/year each look is from, giving the false impression that everything could be worn throughout the Ming Dynasty (I heard that he did specify some eras in the new version? I don’t have it so I’m not sure). You can follow the author on Weibo where he regularly posts stuff about the Ming Dynasty, or check out other books and articles written by him. Even if you don’t have the book, you could probably find images of individual entries on the internet. Unfortunately all of it is in Chinese and no English version is available :(
华夏衣冠 中国古代服饰文化 (2016) 孙机著
More of a collection of essays Sun Ji wrote on historical Chinese clothing from a variety of eras, I got it for the chapters on Ming Dynasty xiapei 霞帔 and headwear. Professional, academic language that is still easy to read, plenty of references and neatly traced line drawings of artifacts. Useful diagrams on the structure of 狄髻 diji. However if I remember correctly, Sun had some beef with Dong Jin on the terminology of parts of diji, not sure if that was ever resolved; here’s an article about that. Also only in Chinese (that I know of).
Qing Dynasty
Chinese Reverse Glass Painting 1720-1820 (2020) by Thierry Audric
This is the book form transcript of a dissertation given by the author in 2016. It's more Chinese painting than Chinese fashion but has a lot of wonderful images of 18th century export paintings (with dates even), which depicted fashion realistically. I love 18th century export art in general, they're really beautiful and unusual so I would recommend everybody to check them out. I love this because Chinese oil painting outside of a court context (and all other forms of art that were not literati painting e.g. woodblock print, lithograph, pen and ink illustration) gets very little attention from Chinese art historians. This book could be downloaded for free in pdf form the publisher Peter Lang.
A Fashionable Century: Textile Artistry and Commerce in the Late Qing (2020) by Rachel Silberstein
This book focuses on the 19th century and has some interesting insights on the impact of commercial workshops on Qing fashion, which is a welcome break from the “dragon robes” and women’s domestic work stereotyped in most literature on the Qing. It has rich descriptions of the decoration patterns and fabrics used in the 19th century, accompanied by paintings and photographs. It did kind of fall into the trap of “the late Ming continued into the early Qing” and just dismissed the 18th century altogether, which is a shame. Silberstein’s dating of several prints also appears somewhat incorrect, but it’s still a very useful analysis of the 19th century nonetheless. I read this for free on JSTOR through my university login.
Cinderella’s Sisters: A Revisionist History of Footbinding (2005) by Dorothy Ko
This book is absolutely epic and an undeniable classic on the subject. Ko masterfully avoids all the surface level problematic takes on footbinding and offers an extremely nuanced, extremely well researched overview on the history of footbinding in the Ming, Qing and republican eras, the reasons for its popularity and demise, with a most interesting analysis of the problems with the way people in the republican era went about the abolition of it. The book is more heavy on the social analysis side but also contains a lot of factual description of the process of footbinding, styles popular in different eras etc. I just love how she approaches the topic in the most factual and non-emotionally charged way possible, which is refreshing considering the sheer volume of literature on footbinding that is just brainless condemnation without any nuance, a lot of which also unconsciously perpetuate misogynistic ideas rather than combat them. I don’t know of a way to read this for free, I bought it from Amazon.
Every Step a Lotus (2001) by Dorothy Ko
I haven’t read this yet but apparently it works well as a supplement to Cinderella’s Sisters. Also on footbinding.
China Trade Painting 1750s to 1880s (2014) by Jack S C Lee / 中国外销画 1750s - 1880s 李世庄著
Another book on export art, focusing more on the established painters. Lee digs a bit more into the painters’ experiences and biographies, with big portions on George Chinnery and Lam Qua, but also includes plenty of portraits and scenery paintings depicting men’s clothing and the architecture of the studios at the Guangzhou factories (十三行). It’s great because the paintings included were super realistic and well made with accurate proportions and anatomy----the quality on a par with those produced by the European academies----so they contemplate conventional Chinese portraits made in the same era in showing how the clothing fits on the body. Again I bought this book second hand from Amazon.
----
I don’t know of any reliable books for republican era fashion because for some reasons most discourse on it is centered around the glorification and mystification of the cheongsam... Fortunately, due to the abundance of extant originals and photographs, books are largely not necessary for the research of republican era fashion :3
There are some other books and articles that were recommended to me but I haven’t yet read: x, x
@fouryearsofshades also made a post recently recommending books and it covers other time periods as well.
If anyone knows any other books on the Ming, Qing or republican era please tell me regardless of good or bad. I need to read more😅

hi! sorry if this comes off as rude, but i’m learning german and was wondering if you have any german tv show/film recommendations? i’d really appreciate it if u do, thanks so much!
Hello!! Don't worry, this isn't rude at all :) I haven't seen many of these in a long time but here are a few I really enjoyed (I linked the trailers to the movies/the first seasons of the shows too):
MOVIES
Die Feuerzangenbowle (1944)
Yes, this movie is very old; it's black and white. But it's still shown on German tv and it's pretty funny. A famous writer goes undercover in a school, pretending to be a student since he never got the classic school experience (he was home-schooled). He and the other students play a bunch of pranks on the teachers, and other shenanigans happen.
Das Boot (1981)
This is a classic and was nominated for several academy awards, including best director and best cinematography. It takes place on a German submarine during ww2, so it's a war movie. Usually not my favorite genre but this one really kept me on the edge of my seat. There's also a series that came out recently, but I haven't seen that. I can't imagine that it's better than this though.
Good Bye Lenin! (2003)
Takes place shortly after the fall of the Berlin wall and tells the story of a young man from East Berlin. His mother just woke up from a coma, and the doctors say she shouldn't get any big surprises (like, you know, the of the fall Berlin wall) so he tries to fool his mom by pretending the GDR still exists; which is harder than it sounds. The premise sounds a bit ridiculous but it's a really great and funny movie.
Das fliegende Klassenzimmer (2003)
Based on a very popular children's book, this movie tells the story of a boy who's new in a boarding school. He and his new friends find the book for a musical and decide to practice and perform it. (There's a bunch of other stuff happening like a rivalry with another group of students. I haven't seen this movie in forever but it's good and the story is very well known).
Die Welle (2008)
This is based on a true story about a social experiment a history teacher did with his class; maybe you've heard of it before. They create a mock-nazi party to try and understand how they became so popular and how people could buy into their rhetoric. Things go sideways pretty quickly. A great movie and a reminder that none of us are immune to indoctrination and radicalization. There's a tv show with the same name, but I don't think they're connected.
Fack Ju Göthe (2013)
I feel like everyone in Germany has seen this comedy at this point. Objectively it isn't a very good one but I'm going to recommend it simply because every German person I know can quote at least one line from this movie. A criminal takes a job as a teacher for the owrst class in that school, because his accomplice buried the money they stole underneath the school and he needs to get to it. Let's just say his teaching methods are a bit... unconventional.
Labyrinth des Schweigens (2014)
Another movie based on a true story, and one of my favorites. This one really stuck with me. It's about a young state attorney in 1950's Germany, who starts interviewing holocaust victims and prosecuting nazi officers who served in Auschwitz. This movie really shows that many people in Germany would have preferred forgetting the holocaust ever happened and pretend everything is fine rather than confront it.
Tschick (2016)
We actually read the book to this in school. It's a bout two 14 year old boys who steal an old car and go on a road trip together, and all the crazy stuff they experience. To be honest I don't remember that much about it since it's been so long since I've seen it, but I do remember really liking it!
Kästner und der kleine Dienstag (2017)
Remember that really popular children's book I mentioned? Well, this movie is about the author of that book. He's one of the authors who stayed in Germany during the Nazi regime, even though his works were banned and burned. It's about his friendship with a young boy that inspired a character in another famous book of his.
Die unheimliche Leichtigkeit der Revolution (2021)
This movie is about the east german environmentalist movement that started the peaceful revolution, which lead to the fall of the Berlin wall. It's about a teenage girl whose younger brother died due to pollution, and the state is trying to cover it up. Also shows how the GDR was trying to suppress any criticism of the state. It's definitely not the best movie on this list, but I really enjoyed it.
TV SHOWS
Ku'Damm 56, Ku'Damm 59, and Ku'Damm 63
The three mini series tell the stories of three sisters, whose mother runs a dancing school on Kurfürstendamm in Berlin. They take place in 1956, 1959 and 1963 respectively. It touches on a lot of topics, including domestic abuse, antisemitism, homosexuality, rape and more. I particularly loved the first season, where the youngest daughter who doesn't really fit into her mother's plans discovers her love for rock n' roll dancing.
Charité
The Charité is a prestiguous university hospital in Berlin with a long history, which this series exlpores. Season 1 takes place in the 19th century, where Robert Koch is lookig for a cure to tuberculosis. Season 2 takes place in Nazi Germany and among other things talks about the euthanasia practices at the time. Season 3 takes place right when the wall is being built (which passed right by the hospital). The show includes charcters based on real people as well as fictional ones.
Deutschland 83, Deutschland 86, Deutschland 89
An East German soldier has to go and work undercover for the GDR in West Germany, at a time where cold war tensions run high. I never got around to watching the last two seasons, but I remeber that the first one was really good.
Club der roten Bänder
This is based on a true story, and there are other versions of this show for example in the US. It's about a bunch of kids with different conditions who become friends in a hospital; two of them have cancer and got their legs amputated, one has an issue with his heart, one crashed a motorcycle, the youngest is in a coma, the girl has an eating disorder. There are other characters who show up as well. The show can get pretty sad, but their friendship is really touching.
Türkisch für Anfänger
This show was wildly popular back when it came out in the early 2000s. A german woman marries a turqish man, and create a patchwork family with four kids; who are absolutely not excited about it. But they have to figure out how to live with each other.
Oof, this escalated a bit, but I didn't want to exclude anything :) I hope you find something you like on this list!
