I now give myself permission to write a fanfic for the game 😊 (essentially Arthur chose to stay on Joy and him and Sally reunite. Idk why but I wanna write this so bad-)

This game is seriously eating like all of my brain and I can't complain XDD I got to the end of Arthurs act today, but I'm going though and trying to do the side quests for him first. All I can say is the entirety of the Health Department was done brilliantly, it gave me genuine chills.

My Arthur Hastings Headcanons

🎼Arthur likes classical music. His mother is the person who introduced him, doing so by playing records all throughout the days. He inherited the records they used to play together after her death. He usually plays them while he’s writing or reading at home.

🏢Arthur’s flat in the Parade District is about the same size as Sally’s and quite clean. He's quite an organized person and rarely late for anything. On the walls, there are a couple of pieces of artwork that were once hung in the Hastings home, landscapes mostly, and a calendar with lots of notes and marks written on it (He marked Prudence’s birthday on this calendar as well as the day of the party we see in the game). He has a small collection of books in his bedroom, including novels that he doesn’t always finish reading though he tries. There's also a chess set that he and Percy used to play with. He's very fond of it but because he takes so much Joy, he doesn't remember its sentimental value. I like to think that if he went to visit his flat while at the Parade District during the game, he would take a chess piece as a memento.

🌌Stargazing was another activity that the Hastings brothers did together. At the camping trip Arthur snuck Percy into, Percy pointed out every constellation he saw and told some of the stories behind them while Arthur listened. If the plague wastrels weren't an issue, he would definitely lie down somewhere and look up at the stars. He probably thinks about Percy whilst he does that.

📖❤️Arthur likes to read romance novels. Actually he likes love stories in general and that explains why he was so giddy when listening to that wastrel couple talk in the Garden District.

🪑During his journey, Arthur spends lots of time sitting on the benches to either read a book he picked up along the way or just think. Arthur sitting on that swing at the start of the cutscene with Sally in the Garden District is a good representation of what he does in his free time.

🖋Has lovely handwriting. Like it's the kind of writing you would see on a Hallmark greeting card. He writes in cursive with lots of pretty loops.

🚪Definitely more of an introvert than an extrovert. Arthur values his alone time a lot. However, he doesn’t mind joining his co-workers for a drink at the pub sometimes after work. They’re friendly and he likes them (well, except Clive). He’s not particularly close to them, though. They don’t know his past but then again Wellies aren’t concerned with that sort of thing. Being an introvert isn’t the same as being shy, of course, and Arthur isn’t a shy person as it is shown numerous times in the game that he can talk to people with ease.

Sick, 1947

Maybe it had been more than a drizzle... AO3

“Percy, are you still in bed?” Arthur’s voice was muffled by the closed door. “Dad says you need to get up or you’re going to be late for school.”

Percy groaned and burrowed deeper under his duvet. He had been feeling awful since he woke up around two in the morning and had only been feeling worse since. He keeps side eyes closed to try and settle the ache in them. Arthur knocked on the door again, only succeeding in hurting Percy's head.

There was a click as the knob turned, followed by Arthur’s footsteps; “Percy.”

“G-go… Go away- Go away…” Percy stammers out in a hoarse voice. His throat hurt so bad.

“Hey…Are you feeling alright?” Arthur’s voice softened, followed by a sigh. “I told you not to go out in the rain without your jacket.”

Percy groans and tucks his face into his blanket. He just wants to sleep, despite how he struggled to. The mattress dipped as Arthur came to sit next to him. His cold hand came around to press against Percy’s forehead. The coldness felt so nice against his overheated skin, he didn’t even care his face was being touched.

“Bloody hell, Percy, you’re burning up.” Arthur pulled his hand away. He stands with a sigh. “I’ll go tell dad you’re sick and can’t go to school today.”

Arthur’s footsteps soften as he leaves the room, the door clicking behind him. Percy closes his eyes again, finally slipping off into sleep. He wasn’t sure how long he slept for but it felt like it had been a while. The room had darkened as it had started raining at some point, the droplets paddering loudly against the roof.

He rolls over onto his back and rubs his sore eyes. The only light in his room was the fairy lights he had strung up around his room, thankfully the warm glow didn’t hurt his eyes as he blinked.

The sound of multiple pairs of footsteps were coming up the attic steps. He slowly sits up, leaning back against his pillow as he looks over at the door curiously. It opens a moment later, revealing Arthur with Eddie, Sally and Margret who were now crowding into the room.

“Hey, Percy! I brought you soup!” Eddie announces, holding up a glass container of what looked like vegetable soup. “My mum made it for supper yesterday so I brought some over for you.”

“Thank… th-thank you.” Percy’s nose was stuffed up, making it hard to speak.

“How are you feeling?” Sally asks, coming to sit on the arm chair across from the bed.

“Aw-awful…” He sniffles, cringing at the feeling of mucus.

“You look awful.” Margaret states. When Sally and Arthur glared at her, she quickly added on. “I just mean he looks really sick! Don’t glare at me.”

Percy looks aways, focusing on the soup. He takes the spoon Eddie had brought for him. His taste buds weren’t working properly, making the food taste off. He grimaces as he takes a bite. He didn’t want to eat it, but Eddie had brought it just for him and he could at least try and get it down.

He wanted up not eating much of it, but he did at least feel a bit better having eaten something. He sits the container and spoon down at his side table and leaned back against his pillow to watch his friends.

Sally and Arthur had somehow ended up arguing about something while Margaret gave a few comments on their topic. Eddie was the only one not involved, instead sitting cross-legged on the bed next to Percy. Eddie leaned back against the headboard as Percy leaned into him with a sniffle. Eddie was always comfortable to lay on. He closes his eyes, listening to the bickering as background noise as he drifts off. He felt a lot better than he did this morning waking up sick.

Arthur Hastings For The OTP Meme Please

This is going to be so much less varied in partners than the Sally one because Arthur’s a big ol awkward mess of a man haha

My NOTP for them: Bobbies

This is an incredibly popular ship that I've never understood. I mean, I intellectually get it from a fanservice and thirsting perspective, but I don't get it from a character perspective. I think it wouldn't be such a notp for me if the fandom wasn't so oversaturated in it.

My BROTP for them: Sally

Before all else Sally and Arthur were best friends and at the end of the day, beyond any romantic interest, they just want to be friends again. I like the idea of them finding their way back to friendship in the future. Rebuilding the trust they used to have for each other and getting to know each other again as the adults they’ve grown into.

Alternatively, a friend pointed out Richard Arkwright and the potential friendship there had Arthur taken him up on that impromptu job offer and it’s a fun little worm of an idea.

My OTP for them: Sally (under certain conditions):

I expanded on this more in the Sally post, but I’ll chat about it again here with an Arthur focus. Friendship is the foundation of their relationship and when friendship meets mutual attraction, it has the potential to grow into a very healthy, loving relationship. Of course, they have their issues and have had their conflicts, but if they could rebuild that trust and truly learn to love each other for who they are, not who they think the other person is, then they have the potential to be a really healthy and cute ship. What can I say? I’m weak for malewife x girlboss.

My second choice pairing for them: Beatrice Gates

He ticks all her boxes for a perfect partner: He’s tall.

In all seriousness though, they do both like books and once Beatrice goes off her Joy she is distraught over a lost loved one. I think that’s something she and Arthur could maybe bond over. Not a serious ship, but, you know, I don’t not ship them.

My fluffy pairing for them: Sally (older and well adjusted)

To expand more on their being my Arthur otp, this is all under the condition that they’ve taken time to get to know themselves, get to know each other, process their respective trauma, and settle into lives as functional adults. I like the idea of a slowburn love growing between them amidst their rekindling friendship. Arthur stepping in as a dad-figure for Gwen. Both of them supporting each other in their respective lines of work. Arthur learning to trust and Sally learning to be trustworthy. Not jumping into a relationship, but slowly walking into it over the years side by side until one day they realize they’re making their way through life hand-in-hand.

My angsty pairing for them: Sally (under certain conditions)

With all those caveats, we were bound to wind up here too. I’ve gone into this in depth on my Sally version of this.

As a different angsty pairing for him, while I actually don’t read Arthur as being bi (totally okay if you do, I just personally don’t), I’ve seen the Arthur/Nick pairing go by a few times in the fandom and I find in interesting in a super toxic way. What with Nick being an active drug addict and Arthur trying to get clean of Joy.

My favorite poly ship for them: Arthur/Sally/Gemma/Margaret Oliphant polycule

Kind of a “Hi this is my girlfriend Sally and this is Sally’s girlfriend Gemma and this is Gemma’s girlfriend Margaret” thing. The is with the caveat that Arthur can handle an open relationship which I doubt. He strikes me as the kind of person who really wants and needs a monogamous relationship (if he were to be in a relationship at all, that is). But I do like the idea of this polycule.

My weirdest pairing for them: Gemma

While I do ship Gemma with Margaret Oliphant and/or Sally more than this, I think she and Arthur could have been a pretty fantastic journalism team with maybe a little bit of romantic interest mixed in there. I don’t actively ship them, but I could see it. The only real complaint I’d have is that Gemma can do worlds better than Arthur haha

Doodling Arthur and Sally, the dysfunctional duo. They make my heart so happy cuz-- it's basically all just conflict. They care about each other but bring out the absolute worse in each other. Idk I just like their dynamic. It's fun to think about

You can't tell me Arthur wouldn't bring up like the randomest shit from when they were young as he remembered them. Just like the dumbest shit. Example: She "stole" his favorite pen because she needed something to write with and forgot to give it back, so randomly hes like "you wtf why didnt you give me back my pen, I liked that pen" and shes like "h u h ? ?" Que a small argument where she explains that it's REALLY NOT A BIG DEAL, and eventually he's like "yeah you're right. But you owe me a pen" and then they go on about their day.

Like, I don't think he's an asshole, but he remembers like the dumbest grudges. And his way of processing them as they show up, since Sally is legit there, is to go ask her about it. And by ask, I mean lightly accuse.
