Protective Batbros, a subsidiary of my Protective Batdad series
Tim is sitting alone.
It was something Dick had made note of shortly after arriving at the gala. There are people scattered around at various tables, but even more people milling about and socializing. Before he can do more than smile and nod to the newest Robin, a small group of WE investors draw his attention into a dull conversation.
Dick talks with them for a little while, then makes his rounds throughout the big hall, mingling with various acquaintances, and sampling some hors d’oeuvres. By the time he’s back to where he began, he notices that Tim is still sitting by himself. Or, he amends, maybe someone else has been by and gone again?
Tim ’s posture is perfectly straight, and he isn’t looking around. His expression is neutral, but not blank like he’s spacing out. There are appetizers on his plate that he clearly hasn’t touched. One of his hands is folded in his lap, the thumb of the other hand is rubbing methodically at the polished handle of a decorative spoon. Dick makes his way over to take the seat beside him.
“Heya, kiddo.”
“Dick!” Tim’s face lights up when he sees him, if only for a moment, which makes Dick’s heart light up as well, as he pulls the kid into a one armed hug.
He makes a brief mental note of how tightly Tim clings to him in return, then files the observation away to analyze later.
He doesn’t like how little they’ve seen Tim around the manor recently. His parents have been in town for the past week and a half, which throws a bit of a wrench into their nighttime escapades.
But it’s a good thing, he reminds himself. Tim doesn’t get to spend nearly enough time with his parents; it’s good that they’re around. Dick feels a little guilty for thinking of them as an inconvenience, even though he’s pretty sure Bruce does too.
Dick leans back into his own seat, but keeps an arm resting on the back of Tim’s.
“How’s it going?” He asks.
“Okay,” Tim says with a shrug, expression and posture already returned to their neutral state.
“Been kinda boring without you around this past week.”
“Yeah, sorry. My dad likes to know where I am.” He begins to rub his hands together, then seems to realize what he’s doing, and forces himself to return to the subtler motion of worrying at the silverware.
Dick nods, watching his hand.
“Must be nice having them around for a while.” He is being supportive. He needs to be supportive.
“I- yeah. It’s great…”
Dick looks at him with an open expression, waiting for some clarification.
“They’re not like around around,” Tim says. “They still work. But it’s nice when we get to have dinner together. And Mom says that maybe we can try to have a family game night before they have to leave again, if there’s time…”
Dick resists the urge to ask when that will be. Tim sees right through him.
“They’ll be leaving for Norway before the end of the month.”
Dick isn’t sure what the appropriate reaction to that is, and his expression sort of ends up stumbling into a grimace. He glances down to keep it concealed, and Tim is kind enough not to draw attention to it.
“I’m sorry they’re not staying longer. But it’ll be good to have you around again.”
Tim nods absently. An uncomfortable expression flits across his face, but vanishes quickly.
“Tim, are you feeling okay?”
At first he just gets a noncommittal noise in response to the question, then after a minute Tim wrinkles his nose, and glances around the room.
“It’s loud.”
Dick nods. He hadn’t really been attuned to the noise level himself. It wasn’t especially loud by Gotham aristocracy standards, but he could see how it might be annoying to someone who was bothered by that type of thing, or just wasn’t particularly used to it. Of course, Time would be used to it though, so that didn’t really factor in here.
“I might have some headphones in the car,” he offers. “They’re not noise cancelling, but they might help. Do you want me to go gram ‘em?”
Tim’s expression shifts, and he eyes Dick, like he’s trying to decipher something about him.
“This isn’t exactly an appropriate setting for headphone,” he says after a minute. “I don’t want to be disrespectful.”
“I don’t think anyone here who’s sober enough to notice whether or not you’re wearing headphones is going to feel slighted if you are.”
Tim shrugs stiffly. Dick glances to where his hand is still fidgeting with the flatware, and feels a spark of concern that he might just rub a hole into the pad of his thumb.
“Why don’t we step out for a sec?” He suggests.
“Because it would be rude?” Tim offers uncertainly, not picking up on the rhetorical nature of the question.
“Just for a minute,” Dick insists. He doesn’t like how uneasy Tim is here.
Tim glances around them cautiously, twitching slightly as the band hits a particularly high note, then turns his attention back to Dick and nods.
They head out through the front doors. And while a few people glance at them as they leave, no one hinders their exit.
Outside, Tim seems to finally notice the blister he’s been wearing into his thumb all evening.
“Does that hurt?” Dick asks.
He doesn’t get a response at first, as Tim is frowning down at the finger with apparently intense concentration.
“It’s ugly,” he says after a minute. “I used to pull at the skin around my nails. It never hurt badly, just looked weird.”
“I think Bruce keeps bandaids in the car. I’ll go grab you one.”
“That’s-“ Tim begins.
But Dick is already halfway down the wide outdoor staircase. He doesn’t want to leave Tim along for long if he’s been by himself all night, but figures he probably won’t miss much in the forty five seconds it should take him to get to the car and back.
He finds bandaids, and a set of earplugs in the glove compartment. As he dashes back to the main entrance, he acknowledging that the round trip may have taken closer to sixty five seconds, but figures that’s still pretty good.
When he gets to the top of the stairs Tim’s talking with a woman. Or rather, he’s holding very still and being talked at, by a very unhappy woman, who it takes Dick a moment to recognize as Janet Drake.
“-Don’t know what could possibly have made you think it was appropriate to come out here in the middle of a party. We came back to the table and you were gone! People were asking about you too, and what were we supposed to tell them?”
“Hi,” Dick interrupts, as loudly as he thinks he can get away with, and in a deliberately upbeat voice. “I’m so sorry! I had to get something from my car, and asked Tim to come keep me company. I thought we’d be back in before anyone had a chance to miss us.” He dips his head apologetically, and looks back up with a bashful grin.
Mrs. Drake seems completely caught off guard, looking rapidly between Dick and her son, whose gaze has been mostly focused on a spot behind her right ear. After a minute she manages to force some composure into her expression.
“It’s not that we mind you borrowing him, Mr. Grayson-Wayne. It’s just coming back to the table to find that he’s not there, you understand-“
Dick waves off the rushed explanation of her concern.
“I’m sorry to have worried you.”
She studies him for a minute. Dick isn’t sure what she’s looking for, or what she thinks she’s seeing. But he matches her scrutiny, and forces down the thought that he does not like this woman.
She looks away from him quickly enough, clearing her throat.
“Come, Timothy.”
Dick slips the bandaid and earplugs into Tim’s suit pocket as he follows them back inside, and squeezes his shoulder once there’s no longer a plausible reason for them to be going in the same direction.
He then proceeds to spend the rest of the evening maneuvering himself to keep the Drakes in the periphery of his line of sight, keeping an eye on his little brother. Because Tim can handle himself in this environment, but Dick knows he doesn’t like it, knows that all the sound and bright light gives him a headache. And they’re all a little nervous in crowds. And he knows intellectually that the chances of anything really bad happening tonight aren’t actually all that high. Even so, he needs to look out for Tim, because what if no one else is?
It’s almost too hard to think about. Dick has given himself permission to be a little overprotective, feeling like he has a pretty damn good reason to be. But the thing is, Tim’s not really supposed to need it. Not all the time. Not here. He has a family. Dick has always felt a little guilty for resenting them, but watching the Drake’s go the rest of the night without saying more than a stray word or two to their son makes him wonder if maybe he has the right.
He doesn’t know their situation, not really. But he knows what he sees and he doesn’t like it.
“Can we make sure Tim’s family’s at the same table as us the next time we have to go to one of these?” He asks Bruce later that night, asks as if they themselves aren’t already Tim’s family, even if it feels wrong to imply.
Bruce hums a distracted agreement, and Dick thinks he must see it too.
-
Not that it matters especially, but I kind of picture this happening in the same continuity as this story, but maybe a couple months beforehand (or maybe just a couple of weeks if you want the Drakes to be on the same visit).
Hope you enjoy!

Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 vs. Sony WH-1000XM4: Which Pair Is Better?
There was a time when Bose alone ruled the active noise cancellation (ANC) landscape, and all other headphones claiming to tamp down ambient noise weren't nearly as effective or were even more expensive. But things are changing, and while the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 offer some the best ANC we've tested, other models are catching up. Of the top contenders, Sony's WH-1000XM4 noise-cancelling headphones clearly stand out, with excellent ANC and an arguably better audio experience. But which pair is right for you? Let's break it down category by category to help you figure it out.
Which Headphones Have Better Noise Cancellation?
Let's start with hiss. In a quiet room, turning the noise cancellation on each should tell us if either model is adding high-frequency hiss to the equation—a common trait in ANC headphones, especially lower-tier models that use the hiss to mask frequencies they have trouble cancelling out.
In high-performance pairs like these, we expect to hear little or no hiss. This is the case with the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700—in a quiet room, turning the ANC on to maximum level actually manages to make the room even quieter. The Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones produce some audible hiss, but just barely, and certainly not enough to make or break your decision.
Of course, the hiss test says nothing of what the headphones do to cancel out actual noise, from the whir of an AC unit to the rumble of an airplane. We started by comparing the headphones against the same deep low frequencies played at high volume over near-field monitors to give us an idea of how the ANC circuitry handles deep rumble like you hear on a plane or train.
With the ANC at maximum level (10) on the Bose model, the low-frequency audio cancellation is impressive. You still hear the rumble, but much of the low-frequency intensity is diminished. The Sony model actually seems to dial back some of the deepest low frequencies even more, while both let through some of the higher frequencies associated with the rumble. So while the Sony model does produce some hiss, it's slightly more effective against loud low-frequency rumble.
Tested against the same recording of a loud restaurant, the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 do a solid job of dialing back the overall volume, as do the Sony WH-1000XM4. It's close, but we give the edge here to the Sony model, which seem to lower the overall volume level just a bit more.
With loud rock music playing through nearby speakers, the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 and the Sony WH-1000XM4 both offer dramatic reductions in volume. The Bose headphones seem to let fewer of the highest frequencies through, but are slightly less effective with the mids and lows. The Sony headphones cut out a larger swath of low and mid-range frequencies, but leave more of the highs to be heard, creating an odd filtered effect. This, in particular, is quite a stress test—that either pair effectively reduces such a loud signal with both booming lows and bright highs is impressive. It seems unlikely that you'll ever be using ANC headphones in a real-world scenario like this, but it gives us an idea of what the circuitry for each model can do when pushed to the limit.
When we lower the music to a level you might experience in a restaurant or bar, and combine it with the crowd chatter, we have a more useful test. In this scenario, both headphones perform quite well, and it becomes a bit like splitting hairs. Generally speaking, we'd say that high-mid and high-frequency content seems to slip past the Sony WH-1000XM4's circuitry just a bit more than with the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, while both do a laudable job of eliminating the lows and low-mids.
So the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 produce little or no hiss and are generally excellent for noisy environments, while the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones are slightly more effective at tamping down deep low-frequency rumble, but also produce a bit of audible hiss. It's easy to give the edge to Bose here if you approach this category with purity in mind—the lack of hiss is impressive. But if you're trying to tamp down sounds like airplane and train rumble, you might actually prefer the Sony model.
Which Pair Sounds Better?
Bose is notoriously secretive about publishing specs, while Sony is relatively transparent. Thus, we can tell you that the WH-1000XM4 headphones employ 40mm drivers that deliver a frequency range of 4Hz to 40kHz, although that seems to refer to when the headphones are used in wired mode (and regardless, 4Hz and 40kHz are optimistic values for any frequency range). Both the Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 and the WH-1000XM4 are compatible with Bluetooth 5.0 and support AAC and SBC codecs, but not AptX.
The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700's sound signature is a little brighter and more exaggerated in the lows than the Sony model. It's balanced, but perhaps overly bass-heavy and bright for audiophiles. And with no EQ to tweak the audio experience, what you hear is what you get.
The Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones deliver a bass-forward sound signature, with plenty of sculpting in the highs and high-mids. It's a balanced sound despite all of the sculpting—expect more kick drum thump in the lows and more crisp treble edge lending itself to vocals and higher-register instruments. And you can tweak the balance in the app's EQ.
When it comes to microphone performance, Bose's four-mic array offers slightly more clarity, for a cleaner sound overall, while the Sony mic picks up a little more low-end, so things sound less thin. Callers should be able to understand you easily through both models, provided you have a reliable cell signal.
Beyond Basics: Accessories, Apps, and Battery Life
Both models come with nicely designed, flat zip-up carrying cases with built-in loops for hanging. Both also ship with an audio cable for passive listening, and the Sony model includes an airline jack adapter.
The Bose app (for Android and iOS) offers excellent granular control of the ANC/Ambient modes, but lacks much beyond this. The app allows you to set up either Alexa or Google Assistant as your voice assistant, which you can access via a dedicated button on the headphones (Siri is also always accessible on iOS devices). Other than this, there are some minor tweaks you can make in the settings menu, but there is no changing the EQ for a different sound signature.
The Sony Headphones Connect app (for Android and iOS) includes audio extras like 360 Sound, an immersive audio effect that we find underwhelming. There's also an Adaptive Sound Control feature that tailors the audio performance based on your environment—basically, the overall sound signature and volume will adjust slightly based on the ambient volume levels around you. Purists will want to leave this and 360 Sound off, but they're harmless inclusions. The included five-band EQ is far more useful, and represents an area where Sony gives you a lot more control over the audio than Bose does. The app has a slider to blend ambient and ANC modes, but you can also turn both off, unlike with the Bose app. Beyond this, there are basic changes you can make to the headphone settings, including assigning various functions to the Custom button on the left earcup.
Sony estimates battery life to be roughly 30 hours (or 22 hours when using the headphones with ANC on in cabled mode), while Bose estimates battery life to be up to 20 hours. Ultimately, your results will vary drastically based on your volume levels and your use of ANC and other extra features.
The Absolute Best Noise-Cancelling Headphones (Spoiler: It's a Tie!)
The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 retail for $379, but can often be found for closer to $300. The Sony WH-1000XM4 noise-cancelling headphones go for $349, but look to be on sale at most retailers for $278 as of this writing. Keep in mind prices fluctuate, especially during the holidays, so we'll put it this way: As long as you're willing to do some moderate hunting online, price shouldn't really be the determining factor when choosing between these two pairs.
Ultimately, the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 eke out a victory in the noise cancellation department thanks to a lack of added hiss. As for audio performance, Sony's WH-1000XM4 headphones provide a better balance of lows, mids, and highs, and they also offer EQ. At the end of the day, both pairs earn the same rating from us because it comes down to whether you prefer slightly better noise cancellation or slightly better sound quality. The good news is that both are nearly as good as you can get in either category, so you're not making a major sacrifice by selecting one over the other.
If you're still undecided, or both of these pairs are out of your budget, check out our stories on the best noise-cancelling headphones and the best noise-cancelling true wireless earbuds for more top picks in a wide range of prices and designs.

The layer earbud design sits completely in your ear for a fit with noise canceling. An element found just beyond the ear and a port structure that injects into an expandable cushion connect. That the headset is also recommended by the manufacturer for children with sensory problems without making it difficult for the children to her parents, as they block outside sound. Many individuals state the QC35s possess exactly the identical noise cancellation quality because the QC25s, however, the QC35s appear to block out more sound under my tests.
The differences between these options are the cost and their ability. Bose gives you 10 sounds to choose from and all of them are pre-installed into the sleep buds. Bose has included sound masking technologies that are intended by fitting the frequencies of the sounds which keeps you awake such as a partner to match the undesirable sound with noises. SleepPhones include the most current Bluetooth v4.0 technologies and wirelessly connect with compatible devices so that you do not have to be concerned about getting tangled up in cords. Say goodbye to sleepless nights with an AcousticSheep Bluetooth SleepPhones. Adjust quantity and playback or utilize volume/playback controls. The mode supports regular use but no noise cancellation. Some of these sounds are optimized while others are provided toward comfort masking. As an individual's brain is more elastic while they're asleep, the investigators behind the technology think that will be accustomed to the ringing noises. These are best for those who have as to not disturb others.

The Importance of Building Workplace Boundaries
When you spend so much time working, it is crucial to be sure you establish a healthy routine with both work and life habits that ensure you are minimizing your daily stress. In this article, we’re going to talk about the importance of building workplace boundaries in any workplace.
There are quite a number of factors that can come into play throughout the working hours that can influence your mental health. We’ll go over several scenarios to watch out for, suggestions to help you through them, as well as some best practices in maintaining workplace boundaries.
It’s Your Life
Once you join the workforce, you quickly realize just how much your job impacts your life. The average employed American will spend more than 8 hours a day working, which adds up to one-third of your whole life. Considering we spend nearly half of our lives in bed, it puts it into perspective just how important it is to make the most of the rest of our time.
Workplace stress can carry into your personal life just as much as it affects your work life. Stress can affect your overall health and wellbeing as well as take a toll on your mental health.
It can also lead to sleepless nights where you’re tossing and turning thinking about work-related issues you will have to face the next day. With this in mind, it’s easy to see just how important it is to improve the quality of your work life.
Remote Work
Whether you’ve been a remote employee for some time, or are just learning the ins and outs of working from home, working remotely has been a challenge many more people are facing. The common hurdles of remote work do not have to prevent the arrangement from working for you.
Set a Schedule
Even for individuals who may have been great at time management, teleworking can present challenges you wouldn’t have necessarily faced in the office. Carving out time for your various projects not only gives you a clear idea of what you have to get accomplished throughout the week but can also help you prioritize better to stay productive.
Sharing a general schedule of your day to day with your colleagues helps better communicate when you are available for meetings or calls. This is especially important when you have children at home and still have parental duties outside of the “new normal” workday. Y
our coworkers and superiors can’t be understanding of your work schedule if they are unaware of when you are available.
Establishing a schedule for the week also helps you better understand your personal expectations.
Arranging goals and putting time aside for high priority projects will help hold yourself accountable. While there are many benefits to working from home, you can easily become distracted during your working hours. Without a plan, it can be difficult to get back on track and catch up in your tasks.
Get Dressed
Another important personal boundary is to start taking the time in the morning to get up and prepare for work as if you were still following your commuting routine. Waking up a few minutes earlier and getting dressed can help you wake up for the day and not endure that initial grogginess that happens when you roll out of bed.
While the dress code at the home office is a lot more casual, getting out of your pajamas helps you get into the mindset for a day of work. This way, you’re also ready to hop on a video call if your team needs to meet and you’re already ready to run to the coffee shop if you need an extra boost.
Home Office
The phrase “home office” might conjure up a certain image in your mind: a small room designated for working complete with a desk, a stocked bookshelf, a filing cabinet, and a desk lamp. For those who have suddenly found themselves remote or don’t have the extra space–this may not be your reality.
However, it is crucial that you find an area you can devote to a workspace. It signals to your brain and anyone else that might be home that you need to be left alone to work for the specific office hours you set. To best maintain the work-life balance you need to be able to better separate these things.
There once was a certain pang of relief when you walked into your home after a long day at work, so be sure that you have a space to walk away from so that the rest of your house or apartment still feels like home. Stick to your workspace during your working hours and leave it when you’re done for the day.
Office Space
Being in the office holds a different potential for boundary-crossing. Being prepared for some of these circumstances can help support your mental health at work. Knowing ahead of time how to handle these situations can give you peace of mind if you find yourself in an office conflict.
Office Layout
Places of work can vary considerably in layout. Some will be housed in its own or even a shared building, while others will have private offices for their employees or have a cubicle-like structure. More open floor plans might make communicating and cross-collaboration easier; it may also give way to more socializing than you have time for.
Allow yourself time to have friendly visits with coworkers, but not too much time to distract from your workday. If the temptation of close proximity poses too much opportunity for distraction, try some light music with noise-canceling headphones.
This will help tune out any office noise pollution and keep you on task. Usually, headphones are a signal to those around you that you’re looking to focus on and can help to prevent interruptions.
Shared Spaces
As companies modernize, they might implement opportunities to give their employees alternative or more collaborative workspaces. This could mean bringing in soft seating, open conference rooms, and even stand up desks. Be sure that you follow common space etiquette when using these areas as to respect the space and the personal boundaries of others.
While certain shared spaces may be seen as a more social atmosphere, some can be used similarly to a “quiet-area,” in which those in the area must remain quiet.
Before confronting coworkers for speaking in these areas, consider that it is a bit more of a social setting and a place they can go to work together. Perhaps if it is too loud, it is not a good time for you to be there, or consider pulling out a pair of noise-canceling headphones.
Meetings
Scheduling meetings can sometimes prove to be difficult when you’re accommodating multiple schedules. If your office has a limited number of meeting areas, make sure your meeting is planned accurately and that you are estimating the time needed as accurately as possible.
If you think your team needs more time, rather than go past your designated time, plan a follow-up meeting. It is always important to respect the meeting times of others as you hope yours are respected as well.
Out-Of-Office
Perhaps one of the most important boundaries you can establish is one when you’re not working. Unless there are some extenuating circumstances, there is no reason to work outside of your normal schedule. Let the emails sit in the inbox until the morning.
If your line of work might require some after-hours attention, make sure you come up with a healthy way of handling these situations. Limit it to a certain amount of time, only on certain days of the week, or only by a certain method of communication are good ways to start.
Saving time for yourself, family, and friends without the distraction of work-related items help to balance out the stress from work and maintain healthy relationships. If you want to stay sharp for work, you need recovery time.
Clear Restrictions
If your company uses an accessible calendar for scheduling meetings, use it to show your availability and block off time any personal time you need. If your office is using a mix of remote and in-office time, you can even include where you’re working from right on the calendar. It also makes it easy for you to reference when project planning and estimating timelines.
Taking advantage of this can help you prioritize and understand how much available time you will have throughout the week. If someone asks how much time you’ll need before expecting a deliverable from you, it can be very easy to estimate the needed time.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, or overworked your schedule can act as a tool to help block off any appropriate time you need to be working on various projects.
“You-Time”
Because we spend a third of our life working and another half of it asleep, extra time is so limited. This is why it is vital to stick to your working hours and not let your work infiltrate the free time you may have.
Our hobbies and interests outside of work can be very important to our motivation and happiness. Don’t short yourself from these activities. Ultimately, the hobbies and extra-curricular you enjoy can make you a well-rounded individual who can provide new insights and creative ideas.
A large part of your value is the individual perspective that you gain from outside of your working environment, so don’t underestimate the importance of your free time.
Around the Water Cooler
Spending some time with your coworkers can be very helpful to growing a healthy bond with your team.
Having time to chat about mutual interests outside of work helps you build a team bond that can help production run smoother. A lot of times, there is more in common with coworkers other than reporting to the same manager every day.
As with any relationship, becoming an understanding and empathetic team member can help you better support your coworkers. The ability to empathize with coworkers on occasions where boundaries may have been crossed, toes may have been stepped on, or feelings may have been hurt can help your team as a whole.
Be Prepared
Being able to approach conflict in the office in a mature and healthy way is a very important aspect when entering the workforce. People tend to dislike when you go straight to management before trying to resolve any issues directly first. Casual, unpatronizing tones to bring up any concerns with someone privately is usually a great first step.
Some people get anxious about any kind of confrontation at all. Whether it’s an issue of having too much work on their plate or having trouble with differing personalities, it’s important to speak up.
If you’re worried about having these discussions try reaching out to an office mentor, or even someone in human resources. Seeking guidance from a trusted coworker beforehand can help prepare you for what you want to say and how you want to say it. You may even find that it isn’t your responsibility to address certain issues yourself.
Your Options
How employees relate with one another is largely determined by a company’s core values. People tend to emulate what they see or abide by what they’re told the rules that are in place actually are.
Strong values might dictate workplace culture. Refamiliarize yourself with your company’s policies and values to make sure you’re taking the right course of action and that you’re in alignment with their expectations.
Responsibilities & Deligating
When taking on responsibilities at work, it can be easy to fall into the “yes-man” trap. You want to be the person your boss can always rely on, and the person who always steps up to a challenge.
Your value is not predicated on saying yes. Knowing your limits and taking on what you can handle is far more valuable in the long term. This helps you avoid unnecessary stress, being late on deadlines, burnout, and not living up to your own expectations.
If you think your schedule is starting to look like more than you can handle, it’s better for both you and your team if you say so sooner rather than later. Speaking up for yourself will allow the work to be delegated to people who can help pick up the slack or delay timelines to accommodate a project’s needs.
It’s a sign of trust to your bosses and managers when someone cares enough to ask for help. They know they can trust you with what you say you can take on and gives them the confidence in you that you have the skill of knowing when to delegate.

How HubSpot Service, Support, and Sales Reps Stay Productive on a Noisy Floor
As a customer-facing representative — whether you work in sales, service, or support — you’re probably used to working in a busy, noisy office space. Maybe you work on a loud sales floor surrounded by reps chatting on the phone with leads. Perhaps you work in an office space with customer service and support reps working to assist customers over the phone or video chat throughout the day.
Whatever the cause of your workspace being noisy, it’s not always easy to block out the environment around you. That’s why we’ve compiled the following list of tips and tricks HubSpotters use to stay productive and focused in a noisy, busy, and sometimes, distracting workspace. Before diving into the examples from HubSpotters, let’s take a look at some all-encompassing and actionable techniques to improve your productivity.
How to Deal With a Noisy Office
Block time on your calendar or communicate your need for disruption-free time to your coworkers. Invest in noise-canceling headphones. Listen to white noise or music (specifically, without lyrics). Move around, find a quiet space elsewhere, or work remotely when possible. Make daily to-do lists and micro-goals, then cross them off items upon completion. Experiment with tactics that are specific to your particular role in the office.
Now, let’s hear from HubSpotters about how they use these specific tips and techniques. 1. Block time on your calendar or communicate your need for disruption-free time to your coworkers. “One of my staples is creating a ‘working signal’. Since I’m typically on calls and that signifies I’m unable to chat, I usually keep my headphones on to show that I’m still at work. When my headphones come off that means I’m available to speak with or help others. I’ll also find a booth or another area where I know fewer people so I’m less tempted to converse and can focus on the task at hand.” — John Vassar, Customer Onboarding Specialist, HubSpot HQ “I find while working in a collaborative environment, people still approach you even if you have headphones on — so, I recommend informing your team in advance when you need time to focus. I set 30 to 60-minute blocks in my calendar that I try to religiously follow. During this time, I won’t get up or go for a wander or banter with any of my colleagues.” — Ricky Huang, Principal Account Executive, HubSpot Sydney 2. Invest in noise-canceling headphones. “My headphones have a noise-cancelation feature that I can turn on when it’s really loud. That’s typically what a lot of us on the team do.” —Ado Kawuba, Partner Specialist, HubSpot HQ “I have noise-canceling headphones (Sony WF-1000XM3) that I wear when I don’t need to be on a call, but have to work on a proposal or something else with a hard deadline.” — Ricky Huang, Principal Account Executive, HubSpot Sydney 3. Listen to white noise or music (specifically, without lyrics). “When I need to just put my head down and focus on doing some work, I usually play white noise which helps block everything else out.” — Sotiria Qirjazi, Customer Onboarding Specialist, HubSpot Dublin “I like my classical music — it keeps me focused and blocks out the noise. I stick with music without words so I don’t get distracted singing in my head (typing lyrics into emails!).” — Zoya Khatuntseva, Senior Channel Account Manager at HubSpot, HubSpot HQ 4. Move around, find a quiet space elsewhere, or work remotely when possible. “I know firsthand the toll that working on a noisy sales floor can have on reps, so I encourage my team take the time they need to move around the office, visit HubSpot’s Meditation Room, work remotely (and work on a flex-schedule, if possible), or just take a break when they feel overwhelmed. This helps improve overall productivity — remember, sometimes you need to sit out an inning to play the whole game.” — Dan Love, US Sales Manager, HubSpot HQ “While working as a rep, I’d get up and take breaks between my calls. Leaving your desk can do wonders for resetting your focus, especially if you’re given a few minutes to write case notes between calls. I’d write my notes quickly and use any extra time to leave my desk, walk around, get coffee, etc. This helped me reduce fatigue and stress whenever I felt it was a very busy or noisy day.” — Clint Fontanella, Service Blog Writer and Editor (former Customer Support Rep), HubSpot HQ “I like to grab my laptop and work from somewhere else in the office between my calls to get some time to focus.” — Sebastian Ferreira, Customer Support Specialist, HubSpot Sydney “I find that scheduling time to work remotely one day a week or a few times a month really increase productivity levels.” — Serena Shah, Sales Partner Manager, HubSpot HQ “I typically take my calls on the sales floor, but when I need time to focus, I’ll move to a quiet area of the office to get work done.” — Tim Ferraro, Principal BDR, HubSpot HQ 5. Make daily to-do lists and micro-goals, then cross them off items upon completion. “I stay productive with HubSpot Tasks and I create micro-goals for myself throughout the day to help me stay focused and make things easier to digest. For example, a micro-goal may be, ‘For the next hour, I’m going to either just make calls or strictly focus on my follow-up emails.'” — Cam Karosis, Small Business, HubSpot HQ “Make a list of what you want to accomplish that day, so when you get distracted and forget what you were doing, you can reference the list. Additionally, crossing something off a list is very cathartic.” — Serena Shah, Sales Partner Manager, HubSpot HQ 6. Experiment with tactics that are specific to your particular role in the office. “When my customers can hear it’s noisy in the background, I work harder to ensure they know I’m focused on their problem rather than what’s going on around me. Sometimes, when they hear noise, I worry they’ll be concerned that I’m not completely understanding or hearing their problem. To show I’m 100% focused on them, I try to be more conversational so they can tell I’m fully invested in our conversation and not what is going on in the background.” — Katelyn Tierney, Customer Support Specialist, HubSpot HQ Stay Focused and Productive No matter what your current technique is for staying productive on a noisy floor, don’t be afraid to chat with your fellow reps about their favorite tactics. Or, try using one of these tips from HubSpotters located across the globe. Who knows? You might just find your new favorite strategy. Source link

It’s the start of the academic year yet again. I always use moving back to campus as an excuse to splurge on some university survival essentials, so my semester can run smoother!
However, during this time of transition, we often have to narrow down our selection of what we can bring; this can be a difficult process, as you may not want to fall under the typical post-secondary student rep- “sweatpants, bun, chilling with no makeup”. Rather than allowing loungewear to become your everyday go-to attire, mix things up by investing in pieces that look put together. You will fool every single one of your classmates by sending the message that those late night study sessions featuring Red Bull don’t even phase you one bit and you are an expert at this lifestyle.
As for your dorm room or apartment, you have to put in an effort to achieve a comfortable environment that will  increase your ability to focus on more relevant aspects- school. It is inevitable that your daily routine will pick up and become more hectic as the semester moves forward with assignments, midterms, and final exams, so you may begin to lose your mind with all your obligations. Before you have too much on your plate, get all the staple items that will allow getting dressed and feeling at home as easy as making a bowl of ramen noodles.
Here are some of my favourite, must-have items for going back to school this fall 2017.
Fresh Fall Kicks -
There is no wrong way to wear sneakers and luckily for millennials, it is the only way to finish off your look these days, as they are the style. Not only will sneakers be great for walking around campus; they will feature that “sports luxe aesthetic” and “street style”, we all are sprinting after.
Sneakers often can be paired with endless options from: bomber jackets, loud fur coats, leather jackets, distress denim, oversized sweatshirts, track inspired trousers, wool overcoats, black turtlenecks, graphic t-shirts, joggers and my favourite pairing- a full on tracksuit (ring ring 2000 Juicy tracksuit). If you guys would like a blog post featuring “how to style sneakers as an everyday look” just leave it in the comments. Athleisure is in and it’s not going anywhere, so tie up those laces or pop on those slip-on sneakers and get ready to never take them off!
No Shame Sweatshirt -
One should never underestimate the power of a good quality sweatshirt, for many university students it is a quintessential staple that you cannot survive without. There should be “no shame” in rocking a sweatshirt to lectures, tutorials, meetings with tutors/teacher advisors/professors, study sessions, hang outs with your friends and late night coffee runs. By investing in a sweatshirt that has a sense of style and put together appearance, you can easily dress it up with black high waisted leggings, slip-on sneakers and a wool overcoat.  Now you can have yourself a killer look that will be turning heads!
  The Perfect Planner -
A new planner for the academic year is without a doubt an essential and not to mention a key step into the world of adulting, organization and boosting productivity- having the visualization of every task written down and then having the satisfaction of crossing it out once completion.
You will never have to worry about forgetting upcoming assignments, exams, presentations, appointments or meeting up with friends! Ensure the layout of your planner is practical, by having an area to write to-do lists, goals, grocery lists, and weekly, monthly, and yearly options. You can finally get your life together and be an official #girlboss/go-getter this academic season.
Baddie Baseball Hat-
When it comes to time management, it may be something every single university student is struggling to figure out and overcome. In saying that, we may not have time to shower and style our hair everyday, so that’s where baseball hats come in handy. They are a quick fix to what could have turned out to be a disaster and add an effortlessly sporty vibe to any look.
Flawless Skin Kit -
Having your daily skincare and makeup routine down pack before showing up to university will save you critical time in the future. Whether you are half asleep for that 8 AM lecture, hungover on a Monday morning or late for class, you will be able to not skip your routine, but rather speed through it.
Here’s a tip – combine your moisturizer with your foundation for a faster skincare routine. Then simply top of your look with facial spray/setting spray in order to lock in the look and maybe even throw it in your bag for a quick pick me up/refreshment throughout the day. Having eyelash extensions definitely speeds up the process of getting ready- just ensure they are brushed out using a lash comb. After you have completed all your classes, you can come home and use a face mask in order to treat your skin by detoxing it.
A Go To Bag -
Being a university student it is almost an obligation to carry around a bag filled with textbooks, notebooks, a computer, chargers, planner, pens/pencils/highlighters, noise cancelling headphones and a water bottle. Often times, you aren’t blessed with a great schedule, where you have the ability to stop at your dorm room or apartment in between classes, which means you have to lug everything around. Don’t stop at one bag when shopping back to school; you may also need a smaller more high fashion bag for nights out, your internship, job or simply running errands such as grocery shopping. Needless to say, having a go to bag or a few of them will keep you on the track and organized to the max!
Kick-Ass Contemporary Artwork -
Upon entering your dorm room or apartment, the walls will be bare, naked, and white. As a student in Contemporary Arts, this is not acceptable!  You must add some life to the space because you will be spending time studying and recuperating in –  I personally think it’s a no brainer. Pick up some crazy loud pieces or even minimalist pieces for your walls, which may even strike a conversation during a movie night in with the girls or when you host a dinner party!
Luxe Blanket -
As much as university is about getting good grades, studying and being the best possible student, it is also key to find down time, which may mean different things to everyone. For me, I need a spa night featuring Netflix’s and a luxe blanket to snuggle with. This luxe blanket will also come in handy when you want to take a quick nap in between classes, when coffee won’t simply suffice.
    xoxo

Back To School Edit. It’s the start of the academic year yet again. I always use moving back to campus as an excuse to splurge on some university survival essentials, so my semester can run smoother!
