Whaakari is New Zealand's most active cone volcano, and has been built up by continuous volcanic activity over the past 150,000 years. Several attempts were made from the mid-1880′s to the 1910′s to mine sulphur from Whakaari, but the mining came to an abrupt halt in September 1914 when part of the western crater rim collapsed, creating a lahar that killed all 10 workers.
This week I recap and talk about the Netflix documentary, The Volcano, which documents what was meant to be an ordinary sightseeing tour of New Zealand's Whakaari volcano on December 9, 2019. No one could have imagined the nightmare that erupted.

Cyanidium caldarium has managed to adapt to the highly acidic conditions by being able to pump acid out of its cells and using acid-resistant polysaccharide molecules to protect the cells from the acidic environment.

Tourists on New Zealand's Whakaari/White Island were not informed about the potential dangers of a volcanic eruption, leading to tragic consequences.
The operators of the tour have been accused of breaching health and safety regulations, highlighting the importance of ensuring proper safety measures are in place.
The eruption resulted in severe injuries and the loss of lives, emphasizing the need for thorough risk assessments and clear communication to protect tourists.
2. A 19-year-old in the Northern Territory spent 109 days in prison for a crime he did not commit.
Michael Singar was initially charged with manslaughter but was later found to be innocent when it was discovered that another man had fired the fatal shot.
It was found the weapon that caused the man's death was not an arrow, as originally supposed, but a crossbow bolt shot by another man.
This case is not an isolated incident, as there have been other instances of wrongful accusations and failures in the NT justice system. Legal experts argue that there are systemic issues, including resourcing problems and a lack of basic skills and standards. There are calls for a culture shift in the justice system to prioritize seeking the truth and ensuring transparency in decision-making.
The grandmother of the deceased believes that the police did not properly investigate the case and hopes to receive an apology. The NT government suggests referring concerns of corruption or improper conduct to the relevant authorities.
3. A 22-year-old man from Western Sydney has been charged with murder in connection to a shooting described as an "execution-style killing" with ties to organized crime.
The victim, 24-year-old Marvin Oraiha, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in his car outside his home in May.
Police believe there were more people involved in the murder and have linked Oraiha to the Comancheros outlaw motorcycle gang.
The arrest of the suspect, Simione Lua, is seen as a breakthrough in the investigation.
During searches of several homes, police seized various items for forensic testing, including weapons and suspected drugs.
Lua has been charged with additional offenses and did not apply for bail. He is scheduled to appear in court in September.
I’m watching The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari on Netflix. One thing I have to give white people. They are good at documenting their experience rather it’s good or bad. Like they are literally running for their lives and still got the camera on. I wouldn’t even know where my phone is at that point. 😂😂
The survivor talking in this with no burns survived by jumping in the water. the pilot. So if you couldn’t swim or hold your breath for a long time….. 🥴 if you stayed on the island instead of jumping into the water, the steam burned the hell out of you.
The couple on the honeymoon. Man, hearing him apologize to her because it was his idea to go on this excursion was sad. Damn. I swear there’s always a couple on their on honeymoon in these type of documentaries.
But man, the worst one is the family that’s participating via shore excursion from a cruise. The son is the only survivor of his family. At least the couple survived together. And they couldn’t even find his sister’s body like WTF. The son survived because he had enough energy to get up and look for help. If you couldn’t get up and back to closest edge of island, the odds got lower. I honestly wonder how he survived mentally after all of that….
I hate blaming some of the victims but this seems like the guides should have caught the signs right? But man, it sucks that the dude that got called in on his day off was one of the dead.
