October 22 is International Stuttering Awareness Day. What is stuttering? It is a communication disorder that causes disruptions in people’s speech. What causes stuttering? Stuttering has a number of variables involved. It can have components such as genetic, language development, environmental, and brain structure. Is there a cure for stuttering? There is no cure, but speech therapy has been shown to help. How common is stuttering? Over 3 million people in the world stutter! About 5% of children go through a period of disfluency (stuttering). Of this 5%, approximately 80% stutter and then stop after a period of time. Males stutter more often than females. How do I get help for my child? BEHIND THE SCENES INFO: This girl was a little reluctant to be filmed, stating that her English isn’t good. I wrote down “mine either!” After all, the goal was to view her reaction to stuttering!

Can you find any micro-expressions relating to impatience, surprise, awkwardness, etc?! I can... lets see what you see because after all, my heightened awareness to listener reactions may be biased due to past experiences.

She goes on to mention that her father stutters, kinda.. but then she negates that with a head nod of “no, I’m kidding”. My fellow stutterers, I know we’ve all been through the disclaimer of telling people that you stutter and they say “Me too.. I get slipped up all the time”.. UM NO YOU DON’T! I can appreciate their trying to be empathetic, but no thanks. I digress..

Can you spot her feelings beyond her words? Did you catch any micro-expressions?

What is Stuttering?

Do you know what stuttering is?! According to dictionary.com, stuttering is defined as:

verb (used with or without object)

1.to speak in such a way that the rhythm is interrupted by repetitions,blocks or spasms, or prolongations of sounds or syllables, sometimes accompanied by contortions of the face and body.

noun

2.distorted speech characterized principally by blocks or spasms interrupting the rhythm.

Although this is just a simple word to you, this word represents the life and struggle of many people throughout the USA & throughout the World! Can you imagine what life would be like if you stuttered?!
