• Fidgeting and stuttering do NOT always indicate that someone is nervous.
• Avoiding eye contact does NOT always mean someone is lying.
• Having a hard time focusing does NOT always mean someone is lazy.
• Carrying around a stuffed animal or blanket does NOT make someone childish.
• Poor motor skills is NOT a direct indication of intelligence.
Not everyone fits into your box. Deal with it.

how would you properly write dialogue for a character with a stutter? ranging from a barely noticeable one to a very extreme one. thanks!
How to Write Dialogue for a Stuttering Character
@brynwrites made an excellent post about this that I found while researching and it can be found here. It's a long post but it goes way more in depth than I did.
Types of Stutters:
Repetition of certain sounds: “Li-li-like this” or “Like-like-like this.”
Prolongations: “Llllllllike this.”
Blocks: “L—ike this.”
Rules for Stuttering: (This is mostly for block stuttering, but many apply to other types of stuttering as well. provided by this article)
Stuttering occurs on the first sound of the word. It will not occur mid word or on the first full syllable. (s...s-ample. NOT sam...sam-ple)
Do not write a stutter more than once in a single sentence or three times in a single paragraph. If the scene is a high-stress situation, you might be able to get away with it, but your readers do not want to read block paragraphs of stuttering.
Choose 3-7 sounds for your character to struggle with. People tend to get blocks on particular sounds. For example, b, p, k, w, g...)
Use another synonym for the word they are struggling with. Example: "You look g...g... really pretty."
Don't have your character stutter in every conversation. Under high stress, the stutter will be more frequent, under low stress they may not stutter at all.
If you use the dialogue tag, "he stuttered," do not write the stutter in the quote. If the character is stuttering in their sentence, you don't need to write out the fact that they were stuttering.
Do not write a stutter in thoughts. People with a stutter do not stutter in their thoughts. Just don't do this. It's unrealistic and insulting.

Can we talk about how excited he gets here!!

Zane says ‘cinematic’ and Alex can barely contain himself. He gets all stimmy with his hand and stutters over his words and then has to look away immediately. It’s so rare to see him this enthusiastic, it’s nice.

Really want to write some cute fluffy shit for all the fandoms I write for (VLD, Sally Face and Hazbin) where reader has a stutter bc..I have a stutter. I WANT TO WRITE X READER WITH A STUTTER AND SHAMELESSLY SELF INSERT OKAY? SHOULD I DO IT? Or is that too niche? Anyone else have any kind of speech impediment? Cuz like I can’t stop imagining my comfort characters either lovingly teasing me about my stutter or being so kind and patient and waiting for me to finish my sentence when I’m struggling or even trying to finish my sentences for me (which actually really irritates tf out of me but I think it would be sort of endearing coming from a comfort character).
Sal would be so sweet and patient, just watching with eager eyes as reader speaks, probably nodding along expectantly.
Alastor would def be one to try and fill in the blank when reader is stuttering and can’t get a word out. He’s a know it all fs 🙄
Lucifer would also be so sweet and kind and probably would cut reader off with a gentle pat to the head or a kiss to the check as he tells them to take their time, take a breath first.
LANCE MCCLAIN would relentlessly tease and bully reader but also would find reader’s speech impediment so cute and unique and also kinda funny. He’d really get on my nerves sometimes but I love him anyways.
And then Keith would probably beat lances ass and defend tf out of reader with a speech impediment. Keith is so quiet all the time, he would totally suggest that you don’t have to talk if you don’t want to. You guys can just sit in silence and bask in each other’s presence.
I also like to imagine ✨spicy moments✨ with comfort characters where reader can’t stop stuttering bc they are flustered and trying to focus on the situation and comfort character being like “oh my fucking goddddddd you are so cute I love you, go on”
Like imagine trying to tell your f/o that you want to kiss them or you want them to touch you or something and you can’t really get the words out and your blush just keeps growing and you feel really stupid and like you’re gonna throw up but in a good way? Fuck, I would be an absolute mess trying to get intimate with literally anyone omfg a stuttering, blushing mess. Jamie.exe has stopped working 🫠

Jack Champion with a stuttering reader hc’s
<3
*okay so first of all I think we all know he’s not really one to argue or be rude in any way
*but that all leaves once someone mocks you or says anything rude about your stutter
*one day you two were in a Starbucks drive thru on the way to set and you were trying to get words out
*but the worker just had to be rude and say something
* “can’t talk or something?”
*when the worker said that and then laughed that all when downhill
*you couldn’t even do anything but start to tear up
*as soon as he saw your lip quiver he just went off
*let’s just say you had to drive away before Jack got physical 😭
*if you make self destructive comments or jokes about your stutter, he would at first just look at you confused but doesn’t want to say anything
*once they get more and more “hurtful” he’ll ask you why would you say anything like that
*if you get mad about your stutter and just stop talking or walk off (twin 🤞🏻)
*he’ll just hold your hands or rub your back
*I feel like he would be the absolute sweetest person about your stutter
<3
Y’all I just wanted to make this for anyone who does have a stutter because there are barley any authors that do write x reader’s that include stutters .

Just had a thought.
Hawkeye meeting Charles sister, Honoria, for whatever reason.
By accident probobly. He and Charles run into eachother and Honoria is either there, or they go back to Charles house and shes there or somthing like that.
In all of his talking about her, Charles never mentioned she has a stutter. (Why would he? Its not noteworthy. You don't point out when sombody doesnt sutter, do you?)
Honoria introduces herself or starts talking about somthing and Hawkeye just...stares at her. Sort of blankly. Lets her finish talking.
Charles is about to get upset, says with a warning tone "Pierce-" but Hawkeye doesnt say what Charles was anticipating. Instead he says, with awe, or perhaps slightly flirtatiously as he does with meeting any woman,
"You have a beautiful voice."

I was just thinking about my irl crush who has a really bad speech issue, so I feel like I should make this
SHOUT OUT to people who have speech impediments such as uncontrollable, excessive stuttering, or not being able to form sentences properly, or just any kind of communication struggles at all. I love you all so much and I accept you for who you are, communication issues and all 🤍💗🌹

niko x reader with a stutter?
Lemonade? ~ Niko Omilana
Tumblr media
You had always been quiet. In primary school you had noticed the kids around you talking with each other and playing, sometimes you wanted to join in but there were many times you found the sound annoying.
As you grew up, the loneliness overtook the need to be alone and you started trying to talk to people. It was always difficult for you, you were different, sometimes your tongue just got stuck on a sound. You had tried to stretch the sound out so your wouldn’t repeat it and that seemed to work but sometimes people would be annoyed of that too, they said it was too slow.
You had no explanation for it, neither did your parents and the doctors always repeated the same things, “it’s a stutter”, “it’s untreatable”, “maybe try speech therapy?”
You had gone to the speech therapist, she was kind and always treated you with respect. But she couldn’t help you either.
You entered high school knowing you were different from the other kids. That you couldn’t speak as fast, that you wouldn’t ever be able to match the speed at which they spouted insults at you. You retreated into yourself, to avoid speaking.
There was only ever one person that never made you feel like you couldn’t speak. Niko. You had met him through Sharky, your TikTok friend. The first time you had met him you had kept your head down and barely spoken to him, thankful for all the other men in the room to keep everyone’s attention away from you.
You had gotten used to interacting with Sharky, well basically everyone, online, that was a place you could type as fast as you wanted without having to slow down and work over the sound or repeat it over and over before moving on to the next syllable. You were nervous to meet his friends, if they were anything like they were on camera you knew that a joke could be made and gone in a flash and you couldn’t even reply.
That’s why you sat a little ways away from them. They ate and joked, you followed along, laughing at the right moments. You saw Sharky give you a few looks as you refused to speak but brushed them off.
You had left that meet up early to go home.
The second time you had met Niko things changed. It was another day when they were all there, talking. They had started planning ideas for a new video and you were thankful for the topic as you didn’t have to contribute much.
You saw Niko spare you a glance or two as they talked around the table and thought nothing of it. Having excused yourself away from the group you sat on the couch, scrolling through your phone, reading old messages wondering why you had come here in the first place.
You saw a message from Sharky pop up, a simple, ‘r u ok?’ from 12 minutes ago. You replied with a ‘👍’ before turning your phone off and putting it aside. That’s when you saw him.
He had approached you and between your thoughts and the messages on your phone you hadn’t even noticed.
“Hey. Can I sit down?” He asked simply, you fought to keep the confusion off your face as you nodded in answer.
“Sharky didn’t even tell us your name.” He said turning his head to face you.
“Y/n” you said, thanking the gods of stuttering that you hadn’t stumbled over that.
“That’s beautiful,” he smiled, a smile that took your breath away, just what you needed when you were already trying not to stutter. “I’m Niko.” He extended a hand.
You shook his hand and nodded back, trying to keep you answers to a minimum.
“So, what would be your ideal date?” He asked, suddenly turning his entire body to face you.
You were surprised at his question, but kind of charmed. It wasn’t a question you were asked very often so you took your time answering it. He didn’t seem to mind, watching your face with the same attention through the time you took to think.
“Pic… nics” you stretched out the c in your word to avoid repeating it, finding that people responded better to that, “in the park” you finished, hoping and praying he didn’t mention the elongated consonant as you flashed him your best smile.
He smiled again and nodded along, “what would you eat at a picnic?” He asked again, the look on his face was simple and innocent otherwise you might have thought he was doing this to show your stutter to the other boys.
“Cake? And maybe s-s-some” your voice trailed off after the stuttering and you dropped your head. Fuck everything, the man sitting in front of you was already making you nervous so it was bound to happen eventually but fuck it all. Why’d this always happen to you?
His smile didn’t even falter, “some what?” He asked.
You head snapped up. This was the first person other than you family that was barely fazed by your stutter.
“Lemonade?” You asked in an unintentional question.
“That’s sounds great. How about I take you out to a picnic with cake and lemonade? Would you say yes?” He answered with ease. His voice was gentle, like he didn’t want the other boys to hear him but you saw a certain nervousness on his stance, his hands were fumbling with each other and his eyebrows were turned up in question.
You nodded back at him with enthusiasm. Relief flooded his body, he relaxed his stance and his face fell into a natural smile.
“I talk a lot tho, hope that’s alright with you?” He asked in a genuine question. You almost laughed at him, like he didn’t know that was absolutely perfect.
“I don’t talk mu…ch, so it’s cool” you answer, for some reason this man brought you comfort. You stretched out a sound and didn’t feel like you had to watch his face to see his reaction, you somehow knew he would be ok with it.
GIRL IM SORRY ABOUT HOW LONG THIS TOOK 😭 also my apologies to anyone with a stutter if this ain’t entirely accurate, I would love feedback on how to make this more accurate, I don’t have a stutter myself but I did go to a speech therapist 🫶🫶
as always requests are open and please come by and say hi <3

How Common is Neurodivergence?
Tumblr media
[image id: poster of "How Common is Neurodivergence?.” There are 12 circles and five small images: an image of a brain, speech bubbles, an infinity sign, a person reading, and a person surrounded by arrows and balls. Each of the 12 circles has a percentage representing how common a particular form of neurodivergence is written in Open Dyslexic font. Full transcript, more information, and references under the cut.]
More Information
Forms of neurodivergence represented here are focused on neurodevelopmental disorders.
These percentages are representative of percentage in general population and do not reflect percentages within neurotypes which are often higher due to co-occurrence being the norm, rather than the exception, within neurodevelopmental disorders; for example, 33-45% of people with ADHD will also have dyslexia (Butterworth & Kovas, 2013), whereas only 10% of the general population are dyslexic (British Dyslexia Association [BDA], 2023).
Certain neurodivergencies are often underrepresented and under-reported, so the percentages are likely to be higher; for example, one study suggests that rates for FASD in the UK may be as high as 17% (McQuire et al., 2019).
Some of the neurodivergencies represented here are umbrella terms and percentages given are representative of all forms of neurodiversity belonging to that term; for example, SpLds include dyslexia which is at a rate of 10% (BDA, 2023) and dyscalculia which is at 3-7% (Haberstroh & Schulte-Körne., 2019). Tic Disorders at 1% are another example here, as this is inclusive of Tourette Syndrome which is at 0.6%, and around 1 in 5 individuals exhibit tics at some point during childhood (Cavanna et al., 2017).

lil update... 🧚
so......
lately my anxiety has been bad, due to a lot of personal reasons and as a result, the stammer/stutter i've had since i was a little girl is a lot worse than it usually is. i've had a lot of speech therapy throughout my childhood to help me get it under control but sometimes i go through phases where it comes back a lot worse and i find it really hard to get my words out and this summer has been one of those times
it's a bit of a vicious cycle because my stutter gets worse because of my anxiety but then my stutter causes me more anxiety but i'm trying really hard to try to make it better
i've always loved writing because i can't show my speech issues through writing (even though i've noticed that pretty much all of my reader characters in my elvis fics trip over their words at least once in each piece of writing lmao) and writing really helps me actually
i know i've been a bit inactive here this summer but i wanted to post why that's been the case, i've seen my speech therapist a bit more than usual and it's just been a bit chaotic but i've received so many lovely messages and requests and i promise to post more, especially as it gets colder and i don't have to be out as much (autumn is my fav!!!!)
that's it really, i suppose i wanted to vent and talk about it because it's not something i normally do... who knows, maybe i'll write a fic with a reader that struggles with her speech, i know elvis would be patient with her
