One Piece 1099
I think the montage of Kuma traveling around the world was really impactful. Because we know those aren’t the only places he had been. He had gone to any and all places he could in order to find any possible way to heal Bonney.
However it’s interesting that those places made an impact on him. That they impacted him enough that a few years later when he made the decision to help the Strawhats, he thought of those locations.
The fact that Kuma was able to send the Straw hats to places that would most help them shoes just how well Kuma knew the crew and the places he had been. He had known Mihawk would be able to train Zoro, that Nami the navigator would be safest in Weatheria. He knew Chopper, the doctor, would be best at that island with all the medicine, and Franky the shipwrights had the best chance with Vegapunks’s home island. I think he wasn’t overly sure what to do with Sanji, because to be honest he had no way of knowing that Iva would be freed and would be able to train Sanji in the battle cooking. I think he just took the chance of sending Sanji to something associated with the Revolutionary Army and hope for the best. In a similar fashion I think he took a chance with Robin too, sending her to Tequila Wolf knowing that eventually the Revolutionary Army was going to show up. I think he did a similar thing with Usopp, recalling Hercules and figuring he was a good person to help Usopp out.
Brook and Luffy were the only wold cards. We learn Shakky had an influence in sending Luffy to Amazon Lily, which means he likely saw Brook, a walking skeleton that he knew nothing about, recalled that during his travels there was a group who had a satanic religious practice, and figured that Brook would figure out how to make the best of it.
Kuma is a very intelligent and well traveled man. Through his travels in trying to best help his daughter he learned of many places. Then through his time as a Shichibachi he probably sent many people to places that he thought would best deal with what they needed. I just like how it relates to his later actions and ties it all together to show just how big of a heart Kuma has.
In addition, it also drives home just how fucked the media is in One Piece. Media is a very powerful tool, which is why Morgan’s is an Emperor of the Underworld. We see how Morgan’s can spin events however he wants and has the majority of the world believing his version of events. After all, it would be almost impossible to argue against what they are hearing.
The World of One Piece is pretty isolated. They have limited contact between islands, usually made by Transponder Snails. Depending on the type of snail would determine how far they can contact. Most only have short range, meaning they can only talk between the immediate islands. There are some transponder snails that can cross significant distance, and depending on where you are they may be easier to attain, like Barto’s crew having one that connects to a transponder snail all the way in the East Blue. The other key is that you sometimes need to know the transponder snail number to get the correct snail. Some just broadcast to anyone nearby, as seen in Punk Hazard.
So while Transponder Snails can help, primary way of getting out news in One Piece is the News Coo’s, which are all controlled by Morgan’s. It’s kinda concerning how so much information is controlled by one man. And while officially Morgan’s works for the World Government, the reality is that he does what he wants. Morgan’s doesn’t care if the information is true, he cares about entertainment which is why the Revolutionary Army disregards what he writes and try’s to use their own information network to get information.

One Piece Chapter 1099 - Initial Thoughts
Tumblr media
And we're back
After a week break it's time to see if One Piece will take the lead in emotionally devastating me for this week, given how other things are leaving me on 3 week breaks of ship-based anxiety, not that you could tell of course I've kept it sooooo well-hidden
Anyways, it's time for more One Piece and so, more Kuma backstory, let's see where we go from here
Spoilers for the Chapter, Support the Official Release also
Oden cover this time, Tanukis are giving him a makeover
We pick up where we left off two weeks ago, King Becori has returned and has been burning down the south
Kuma though is fighting through the fire to save people
Becori got the idea from the Goa Kingdom fire, figures
The people though are a lot more resistant to the act than the Goa Nobles were, so Becori orders a few to be killed to silence the mob
Kuma is here and he is fucking pissed
The church is being used as a shelter, as Bonney worries for her dad
Despite Becori's threats, Kuma lays out the entire castle, the One Man Revolution of Sorbet
News travels to Marejois about a new king in Sorbet, as Saturn learns that the people voted Kuma to rule
Kuma though says he's just a figurehead, since a previous king, Bulldog, is actually running the country
A much more adult looking Bonney is running laps in the church though, surprising everyone in how much she looks like Ginny
Seems she somehow ate a Devil Fruit, but also wasn't aware of it, since her aging up was unintentional and she was just trying to up her stamina
As the others try to see how much control Bonney has over the fruit, King Bulldog arrives at the church
Hey it's that old version of Bonney she used in the Reverie, but also Bonney here...
Turns out Queen Dowager Conney was an actual person, explains some things at least in how she made it to the Reverie in that disguise
Kuma yelling at Conney at the back thinking it's Bonney XD
Conney is Bulldog's mother, and Bulldog as Kuma's advisor has come with news
Becori's still about, running a smear campaign on Kuma, thus the moniker of 'The Tyrant'
The propaganda means he's still backed by the World Government, and thus it's only a matter of time until they come back to finish the job
Wanting to protect Sorbet, Kuma leaves it in Bulldog's hands, and goes out to confront Becori again at sea, this also means Bulldog and Conney will take care of Bonney in the meantime
'But I'll be so lonely' welp that's another knife in my riddled heart right now
Alas, Kuma does confront Becori, sitting pretty on a Navy ship and accusing Kuma of usurping him and being a corrupt dictator
Kuma sunk the armada, which got him a bounty (Carrot meanwhile sinks a bunch of Yonko ships and doesn't even get one bounty...yes I'm still sore about it the anime did not help validate her conclusion in Wano)
'He was a hero' 'I don't care, he was my dad first' - Oda please my heart doesn't have room for all these knives
Bonney also wants to be a pirate when she's 10 and cured
Kuma journeys out for info on Sapphire Scales, traveling to all the places he sent the Straw Hats to
He first goes to Chopper's island, since they had vast medical information
Then to Mihawk's island, doesn't look too occupied back then
Oh hey it's those Grand Fleet guys, Jeet and Abdullah
The bounty hunters of course fail in trying to claim Kuma, this was very pre-Dressrosa
Vegapunk's old home is next but they don't have answers
Tequila Wolf is sailed past again (Kuma and Oden have now sailed past it), I don't know what the next one is but it looked like Kuma helped it out, maybe it was Brook's island?
Then Weatheria (Nami's island) and the Boin Archipelago (Usopp's island) with Heracles'n
The stress is creeping up on Kuma though, dead ends and Bonney's 10th birthday is getting closer
Now that's a draconic ship there
The Revolutionaries have found Kuma, Morley has joined and Betty is still looking way different to how she does now
Dragon has a drink with his old Comrade, Ivankov and Inazuma are in Impel Down at this point, but despite all the news around Kuma he doesn't listen to media
Betty also gets Kuma's blessing to lead the Eastern Forces, since Dragon wouldn't allow anyone to take Ginny's position without it
Sabo and Koala also wanted to see Kuma, if only Dragon showed this much pride in his biological child
But he does give Kuma some intel, Vegapunk is moving labs and security is lax, good time for an audience
I think the move is implied to be the Punk Hazard incident too
Kuma is more than willing to rejoin the Revolutionaries once Bonney is cured, and Dragon is more than willing to welcome him back
Back at Sorbet, Bonney is learning how to fight, the scales are still spreading slowly though
Kuma takes Bonney to Navy Science Division Lab 08, which will later be where Egghead Island is, telling her it's a check-up
Got a little box for her like Nezuko
Everyone's surprised about how weird looking the other is
Vegapunk CAN cure Bonney, so clone theory might be done now
Bonney is playing with Sentomaru at this moment so she's not privy to the conversation
Stem Cell Treatment will be the method, real life solutions being thrown in there
The price is exorbitant though, equivalent to building a cyborg
Vegapunk also learns that Kuma's a buccaneer, even though his association with the WG would make that dangerous information
Vegapunk can't explain why Buccaneer blood is special, but he'd like more of it to clone him
Kuma is of course concerned about the idea of clone soldiers, but with Vegapunk using it as a form of payment he's more than willing to do it
Vegapunk hoped at least that the clone army's ability to deflect bullets and shoot lasers would scare evil pirates into submission, having watched Oppenheimer I think the sentiment is meant to be similar
But Kuma does like the idea of robots bearing his likeness protecting the innocent
Saturn meanwhile though has other intentions for them 'a weapon's worth is defined by how many it kills'
The bots are named Pacifista after Kuma's proclaiming himself a pacifist, two men looking to do some good without the hindsight of what damage they will wrought
This was a steady chapter really, could've been a lot more devastating for sure.
We've slowly built up again to all the stuff leading to Kuma's affiliation with Vegapunk, as well as his brief run as a pirate. Much like Corazon it seems most of his travels were fuelled by trying to find a cure for Bonney. A lot of blasts from the pasts this chapter too, though I suppose it makes sense that Kuma visited the places he sent the Straw Hats to, given how them being sent there was tailored for their skills or what they needed to improve on.
The Bonney Clone theory is likely dead, but I still can't put it past Oda to pull the rug, especially for Chapter 1100 - Oda and round numbers after all.
But yeah, it seems a brief alleviation for the moment, before it likely goes to hell again...

happy to see nami landed somewhere safe and where she can further her studies in meteorology, but also troubled that we're still fresh off of thriller bark wherein she was knocked unconscious and someone to disrobe her and change her clothes, only for her to wake up with a strange man she doesn't know, but in that case she still had her friends with her. now on weatheria she's also been knocked unconscious and another man has dressed her, but this time her friends are nowhere to be found. this man's intentions are only for her safety and benefit, and i know one piece won't dive into it, but still, how much does that throw her for a loop though.
in my mind she's still on the upswing of having to deal with that (the timeline in op is screwing but thriller bark had to be like not even a full week prior to sabaody! zoro hadn't even recovered!) and she will still carry that trauma because it doesn't just go away, and now that support system, that rock she had is entirely gone. last week she is attacked and wakes up to a strange man with ill intentions and now she wakes up to a strange man and her friends are gone and she has no idea where they are or where she is or what's to come.

Character ask game! (if you're still doing it) Numbers 4 and 12 for Sanji or Nami?
4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?
for sanji, answered here! i'd love to see him in a spy/heist setting. i know film gold was kind of that, but i want to see him rlly use his silly aliases and sabotage with more plot relevancy ... i think it wld be so fun!
for nami... it'd be fun to see her in a setting of low fantasy political intrigue :]c as someone who was not born at all into 'noble class' but navigates it's twists and turns as well as any of them... all the cool outfits... she would be so cool in it!!
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
for sanji, i hc that pre-baratie, when sanji used to serve on various cruise liners/ships, he used to loiter around the ballrooms to watch the guests dance and wished he could learn. then later, at the baratie, somehow this little wish got out and all the chefs banded together to teach him the various dances they knew. only a couple of them actual had the proper training for formal dances, but sanji ended up learning a lot of dance forms from chefs hailing all across various blues. this goes hand-in-hand with learning various instruments too - you know how sailors are with their music!
for nami, i like to think that post-timeskip, her map-making room is also lined with... sort of terrariums? miniatures of different biomes/locations and the unique weather phenomenon they've come across. it's technology she got (stole teehee) from weatheria. alongside her map-making, it feels right that she'd also catalogue and study the weather patterns they come across as a crew! there's miniatures of reverse mountain, knock-up stream, aqua laguna, etc.
*
send me a character + a number from 1-26!

What if Zoro and Robin are the king and queen of hell, while Sanji and Nami the kings of the sky? Cause Sanji can use the Skywalk and could be possibly carrying Lunarians' DNA. Nami, trained at Weatheria and its heavily related to climate, weather and the sky (perhaps some more if Oda give us more info) 🙊

Where each god lives
Brook the moon
Nami in a traveling weather temple that has mostly been around alabasta
Usopp is green-bit ( a former floating island until it was attached to dressrosa)
Zoro lost his home
Luffy lives anywhere he wants
Sanji is a nomade
Robin use to live on ohara but know lives wherever she wants
Franky lives under water 7
Jinbe lives in the sea forest next to fish man island
This sounds so great!!!!
- Once people hear about the tree house where Luffy "lives" They start going to the mountains outside Goa more, some people thought Goa was blessed by Luffy but Luffy outright said 'nah I hate those guys they killed my little brother' and Everyone boycotts Goa. Sabo saw this in the news and was like "The sun god had a brother-- Ooooooh... "
- Some people say Zoro lived in a town that was wiped off the map, and is just ruins of a town full of pitch black gladiolas with one sheer white one in the middle.
- Nami technically lives in a temple in Weatheria but she will be gone for months at a time disguising herself as a human and visiting her gf.
- Usopp technically has claim over anything with plants on it, and until he attached his green bit to Dressrosa people just kept arbitrarily picking their forest as the best one that Usopp must live in somewhere.
- Sanji was disguised as a human at a resturaunt to teach the humans a few things about not wasting food (he was bored) and underestimated how tall humans were. Then the resturaunt got raided and he got adopted by Zeff. Now he works at the Baratie part-time and he doesn't know Zeff knows he's a god
- Chopper lives on Drum and teaches medicine with his apprentice, Kureha, who is very confrontational and scares him a little. Chopper sometimes forgets Kureha is supposed to have died of old age by now. He's procrastinating on letting her die and be reincarnated because then he'll have to start his teachings all over and they might repossess the castle and--
- Robin mostly just lives with Franky, but she will leave for years at a time collecting information. Franky follows her sometimes.
- Franky so lives under water 7!!! He also sometimes disguises himself as human so he can build battle Franky's with Iceberg
- Brook goes to the moon when he's sad! But he usually just rides on Laboon and plays music
- Jimbe asked for help from Usopp with making a sea-plant house and everyone thinks he regrets it but he absolutely adores his glowing neon sea-plant house!!! It's disgustingly bright but he loves it!!!!
