Chicago: Meet Greet & Create

I held an event, honestly the first of its kind for me. The first of any kind. In the past I have tried to assemble people in one space, to exist in the same room and be able to talk about the things we’re passionate about. I’ve tried a film group event which failed. I’ve tried hosting photography events to no avail. To be honest, anything that I’ve done involving the oversight of others has come to back to me as a disappointment. It has been something that constantly chews at my creative drive and reverbs towards me whenever a communal topic arises. I have tried my best to ignore it.

Which brings us to this event here, where I brought @tgwhipp and @ksnickss   in to create a hosting team within Chicago Illinois, the night before the TØP show at United Center. We had just over 20 people show for this small 2 hour event where we watched music videos, my own artist web mini series, Taylor’s rotoscope, ate pizza, and checked out some of Katie’s prints from her own TØP inspired makeup series. This was the first time people gathered to celebrate something that I held dear, which was incredibly enlightening. At moments during the evening I had a sort of out of body perspective, and not always in a positive light. I almost felt foolish. I’m talking to a crowd of people about my work.. is this narcissism? Blind ignorance? Who am I to feel high and mighty enough to hold an event like this. But that question quickly shifted into “who wouldn’t be allowed to do so?” If you have the idea, the means and the drive, why not do what you think is righteous and good for the community you have contributed to for years. Sometimes we bobble in and out of it, sure. Sometimes things get to be too much and outsiders come in to sling their trash at you. But there are a select few that keep their eyes fixed on my hands. Those people came to this event. Those people are the reason I continue to push past my comfort zone. Those people make me want to keep creating the work I know can blossom success. I appreciate you.

We Are Clique Artists is a project I started three years ago in my own attempt to connect all artists within this band-inspired artistic community. The main goal is to collect logos and signatures from illustrators, painters, photographers, designers, and artists of all kinds and use them as part of a design for a shirt (and poster, this year). Proceeds from the sales of these products are donated to the ASPCA and TWLOHA, two organizations that were chosen by popular vote by those involved in this project.

Year one this project had 55 logos and only 35 shirts sold. The donations to the charities were minimal, but any donation is needed. Year two I stepped on the gas and built the campaign to be much more self sustaining both in its brand and in the quality and production of the shirt design. I picked ten artists that I felt were role models in the community and created a documentary featuring them all. We had 220 logos and just over 300 shirt sales which provided us with over $650 in donation money. This year, I’m looking for even more.

Along with the shirt and poster in 2018, We Are Clique Artists is featuring a mini series featuring a handful of new artists. It is divided into episodes so that each artist gets the time they deserve to speak about their work, how they find inspiration and what this artistic community means to them. I’m hoping to continue this series down the road, as long as there can be some level of funding for production and software costs. There are many artists I would like to give the chance to be featured in this series.
