WASHINGTON -- Inflation has changed the way many Americans shop. Now, those changes in consumer habits are helping bring down inflation.
Fed up with prices that remain about 19%, on average, above where they were before the pandemic, consumers are fighting back. In grocery stores, they're shifting away from name brands to store-brand items, switching to discount stores or simply buying fewer items like snacks or gourmet foods.
More Americans are buying used cars, too, rather than new, forcing some dealers to provide discounts on new cars again. But the growing consumer pushback to what critics condemn as price-gouging has been most evident with food as well as with consumer goods like paper towels and napkins.
In recent months, consumer resistance has led large food companies to respond by sharply slowing their price increases from the peaks of the past three years. This doesn't mean grocery prices will fall back to their levels of a few years ago, though with some items, including eggs, apples and milk, prices are below their peaks. But the milder increases in food prices should help further cool overall inflation, which is down sharply from a peak of 9.1% in 2022 to 3.1%.
Public frustration with prices has become a central issue in President Joe Biden’s bid for re-election. Polls show that despite the dramatic decline in inflation, many consumers are unhappy that prices remain so much higher than they were before inflation began accelerating in 2021.
Biden has echoed the criticism of many left-leaning economists that corporations jacked up their prices more than was needed to cover their own higher costs, allowing themselves to boost their profits. The White House has also attacked “shrinkflation,” whereby a company, rather than raising the price of a product, instead shrinks the amount inside the package. In a video released on Super Bowl Sunday, Biden denounced shrinkflation as a “rip-off.”
Consumer pushback against high prices suggests to many economists that inflation should further ease. That would make this bout of inflation markedly different from the debilitating price spikes of the 1970s and early 1980s, which took longer to defeat. When high inflation persists, consumers often develop an inflationary psychology: Ever-rising prices lead them to accelerate their purchases before costs rise further, a trend that can itself perpetuate inflation.
“That was the fear — that everybody would tolerate higher prices,” said Gregory Daco, chief economist at EY, a consulting firm, who notes that it hasn't happened. “I don't think we've moved into a high inflation regime.”
Instead, this time many consumers have reacted like Stuart Dryden, a commercial underwriter at a bank who lives in Arlington, Virginia. On a recent trip to his regular grocery store, Dryden, 37, pointed out big price disparities between Kraft Heinz-branded products and their store-label competitors, which he now favors.
Dryden, for example, loves cream cheese and bagels. A 12-ounce tub of Kraft's Philadelphia cream cheese costs $6.69. The store brand, he noted, is just $3.19.
A 24-pack of Kraft single cheese slices is $7.69; the store label, $2.99. And a 32-ounce Heinz ketchup bottle is $6.29, while the alternative is just $1.69. Similar gaps existed with mac-and-cheese and shredded cheese products.
“Just those five products together already cost nearly $30,” Dryden said. The alternatives were less than half that, he calculated, at about $13.
“I’ve been trying private-label options, and the quality is the same and it’s almost a no-brainer to switch from the products I used to buy a ton of to just the private label," Dryden said.
Alex Abraham, a spokesman for Kraft Heinz, said that its costs rose 3% in the final three months of last year but that the company raised its own prices only 1%.
“We are doing everything possible to find efficiencies in our factories and other parts of our business to offset and mitigate further price increases,” Abraham said.
Last week, Kraft Heinz said sales fell in the final three months of last year as more consumers traded down to cheaper brands.
Dryden has taken other steps to save money: A year ago, he moved into a new apartment after his previous landlord jacked up his rent by about 50%. His former apartment had been next to a relatively pricey grocery store, Whole Foods. Now, he shops at a nearby Amazon Fresh and has started visiting the discount grocer Aldi every couple of weeks.
Samuel Rines, an investment strategist at Corbu, says that PepsiCo, Kimberly-Clark, Procter & Gamble and many other consumer food and packaged goods companies exploited the rise in input costs stemming from supply-chain disruptions and Russia's invasion of Ukraine to dramatically raise their prices — and increase their profits — in 2021 and 2022.
A contributing factor was that millions of Americans enjoyed solid wage gains and received stimulus checks and other government aid, making it easier for them to pay the higher prices.
Still, some decried the phenomenon as “greedflation." And in a March 2023 research paper, the economist Isabella Weber at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, referred to it as “seller's inflation.”
Yet beginning late last year, many of the same companies discovered that the strategy was no longer working. Most consumers have now long since spent the savings they built up during the pandemic.
Lower-income consumers, in particular, are running up credit card debt and falling behind on their payments. Americans overall are spending more cautiously. Daco notes that overall sales during the holiday shopping season were up just 4% — and most of it reflected higher prices rather than consumers actually buying more things.
As an example, Rines points to Unilever, which makes, among other items, Hellman's mayonnaise, Ben & Jerry's ice cream and Dove soaps. Unilever jacked up its prices 13.3% on average across its brands in 2022. Its sales volume fell 3.6% that year. In response, it raised prices just 2.8% last year; sales rose 1.8%.
“We're beginning to see the consumer no longer willing to take the higher pricing,” Rines said. “So companies were beginning to get a little bit more skeptical of their ability to just have price be the driver of their revenues. They had to have those volumes come back, and the consumer wasn’t reacting in a way that they were pleased with.”
Unilever itself recently attributed poor sales performance in Europe to “share losses to private labels.”
Other businesses have noticed, too. After their sales fell in the final three months of last year, PepsiCo executives signaled that this year they would rein in price increases and focus more on boosting sales.
“In 2024, we see ... normalization of the cost, normalization of inflation,” CEO Ramon Laguarta said. “So we see everything trending back to our long-term” pricing trends.
Jeffrey Harmening, CEO of General Mills, which makes Cheerios, Chex Cereal, Progresso soups and dozens of other brands, has acknowledged that his customers are increasingly seeking bargains.
And McDonald's executives have said that consumers with incomes below $45,000 are visiting less and spending less when they do visit and say the company plans to highlight its lower-priced items.
“Consumers are more wary — and weary — of pricing, and we’re going to continue to be consumer-led in our pricing decisions,” Ian Borden, the company's chief financial officer, told investors.
Officials at the Federal Reserve, the nation's primary inflation-fighting institution, have cited consumers' growing reluctance to pay high prices as a key reason why they expect inflation to fall steadily back to their 2% annual target.
“Firms are telling us that price sensitivity is very much higher now,” Mary Daly, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and a member of the Fed's interest-rate setting committee, said last week. “Consumers don't want to purchase unless they're seeing a 10% discount. ... This is a serious improvement in the role that consumers play in bridling inflation.”
Surveys by the Fed's regional banks have found that companies across all industries expect to impose smaller price increases this year. The New York Fed says companies in its region plan to raise prices an average of about 3% this year, down from about 5% in 2023 and as much as 7% to 9% in 2022.
Such trends suggest that companies were well on their way to slowing their price hikes before Biden's most recent attacks on price gouging.
Claudia Sahm, founder of SAHM Consulting and a former Fed economist, said, “consumers are more powerful than President Biden.”

Memories From Half A Century Ago; The Cincinnati Tornadoes of April 1974
On the evening of April 3, 1974, your narrator interviewed a woman who found a perfectly new, pristinely crisp, twenty-dollar bill in her front yard. This random occurrence of good luck became newsworthy because her miraculous benefit had floated down into her yard from a passing cloud that had recently spawned an F5 tornado.
At the time, I was not a reporter exactly but everyone that evening became either a reporter or a source. The memory of that day remains so fresh and clear it seems impossible that it transpired exactly fifty years ago.
In the fading afternoon, a heavy storm blew in as I drove a clunky Ford Econoline van from the Hopple Street Viaduct onto Westwood-Northern Boulevard. I was, at that time, a senior at the University of Cincinnati desperately yearning to graduate and move on to the next chapter in my life. To cover tuition, I worked as a printer for the Western Hills Publishing Company. Our offices were on Davis Avenue in Cheviot and our printing presses occupied a floor in the historic Crosley Building on Arlington Street in Camp Washington. My duties as the junior member of the printing crew involved shuttling copy and page flats from the editorial offices to the typesetting and composing staff.
As I climbed out of the valley toward the English Woods housing development, hail scattered across the road. Hailstones rattled on the van’s roof, then pounded, then stomped. It sounded like some gremlin with a baseball bat hammering on the roof as ice balls the size of oranges smashed into the asphalt all around. Tree branches cracked and split and thatched the roadway.
Somehow, I made it to Cheviot and pulled into the Press parking lot. It was full of people, just standing around. I got out and looked at the van. The roof looked like a moonscape, there were so many dents in it.
“Hey! Look at this,” I shouted. No one turned or said a word. And then I saw why.
Stretching from the horizon halfway to zenith was the tornado. It was impossible to comprehend the scale. More than two miles away, we heard no sound except endless sirens calling to one another from every direction. Where we stood transfixed it did not rain. There was no wind. There was only the tornado.
“Look at all that paper swirling around,” someone said.
“Those are garage doors,” another answered.
We watched as the horrendous vision scraped its way northward, the finger of God plowing a furrow along South Road out in Mack. We watched as it withered and lifted and twisted into nothingness against a pallid sky, waving it seemed in farewell at last as it vanished. We stared at each other, silent, unable to find any words.
Tumblr media
Gradually, we realized that all the lights were out. There was no power in the offices. The publisher sent me around the corner to a hardware store to buy all the candles they had in stock. It was going to be a long night.
At this point, for the benefit of readers younger than I, it is necessary to explain a few details. The cash register at the hardware store was mechanical. It did not require electricity, much less Wi-Fi, to operate. The editorial offices were stocked with manual typewriters. The telephones were landlines, on a separate network, and functioned even when the power was out. Everyone had a battery-powered radio.
Anyone with the ability to write a coherent sentence became a reporter. I was sent out, still wearing my printshop uniform, in the divotted Econoline, to gather eye-witness reports. I found a small crowd at the Western Hills Country Club who had been herded into a downstairs bar while the sirens howled. They queued up for every available telephone to check in with their families. I found people in shock, wandering through piles of rubble that had been their homes, clutching any random possessions they recovered. I saw ambulances backed up in a line, waiting for utility poles and power lines to be moved. I saw people wrapped in blankets, standing in the middle of nothing left, sobbing on each other’s shoulders.
There were people who swore they saw two funnel clouds and people who claimed there were four, twisting like snakes in the sky. There were people who confessed to being so transfixed by the surreal wonder of the twister that they stood paralyzed as it swooped down on their houses.
And, in the curious way the universe laughs at we mere humans, I found humor.
There was the guy who, in a dispute with his insurance company, was photographing damage to his roof when the warning sirens erupted. He saw the funnel approaching and dove into his basement. When he emerged, his roof was gone, and so was the rest of his house, but he bragged that he had the photos to press his prior claim.
I talked to one of the rescue workers who told me about a kid, maybe 15 or 16 years old, who approached him and begged him to hide a bottle of vodka. The kid didn’t want his mother to know he had the bottle hidden in his bedroom – the bedroom that was now nothing more than a debris field.
Meanwhile, at the University of Chicago, Dr. Theodore Fujita drafted a questionnaire to be sent to almost every newspaper, every radio station, every television station in the country. Dr. Fujita asked a lot of questions about the duration and intensity of the 148 confirmed tornadoes reported that day. He and Allen Pearson of the National Severe Storms Forecast Center hoped to refine the tornado classification system they had created just three years previously. Someone at the Press filled out the questionnaire and sent it back.
A year later, having graduated from the university and transferred to the newsroom, I found a largish cardboard tube lying amid the usual pile of news releases and complaint letters that constituted our daily mail. On opening the tube – it was addressed to no one in particular – I found a map of the eastern United States titled “Superoutbreak Tornadoes of April 3-4, 1974.” Dr. Fujita, compiling all those questionnaires, had mapped and labeled every one of those 148 tornadoes.
In the center of the map, there was my tornado, the only tornado I have seen with my own eyes, officially designated as an F5 monster.

I appreciate your Caps stuff! I am also sad. You seem to know a lot of weird stuff, drop a Caps fact or story on me I probably don't know.
Aww, you're sweet. Hmm. Okay. I went digging through my file of "weird articles and quotes I might need or want to write something for something someday" and rediscovered this story, which was back in training camp of the 2011-2012 season. Unfortunately, I can't find it online anymore, but it was a Canadian article (and had some pretty eyeroll-worthy Crosby-Ovechkin comparisons in it) but it also had a great story about Ovechkin and the Russian then-rookies, Dmitry Orlov and Stanislav Galiev.
Stanislav Galiev, who you might or might not remember, was a third round pick for the Capitals in 2010. Same draft as Evgeny Kuznetsov (and interestingly enough, Brett Connolly). FUN FACT: In 2010, for some reason, the NHL decided to do a hilariously awkward pose for like every draftee where they were photographed, like... bursting out from between some curtains. Behold:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ANYWAY. The article was about how Ovechkin was basically running an Air BnB for his rookie teammates.
The Capitals' third-round pick in the 2010 NHL entry draft, Galiev arrived in Washington on Aug. 15. He stayed in a hotel at first, but after it became too expensive for him, Ovechkin took the young winger under his wing. "He told me, 'You can move in with me if you want to' '' Galiev said. "I have been staying with him for two weeks." Galiev, who rooms with fellow Sea Dog Jason Cameron in Saint John, is enjoying somewhat more luxurious accommodations at Ovechkin's residence in Arlington, Va., near the Capitals' training complex. The only player to be named a first-team All-Star in each of his first five NHL seasons, Ovechkin signed a 13-year contract with Washington in 2008 worth $124 million. "It is a pretty nice house,'' said Galiev, who is sharing the residence with Ovechkin and Dmitry Orlov, another prospect from Russia. Especially Ovechkin, who, quirky as he is, is showing Galiev and the rest of the Capitals' prospects a serious side. "He tells us what we have to do off the ice, that we have to be disciplined and not to do stupid stuff,'' Galiev said. "He is a real professional and a great guy, and I am happy to be friends with him." "Every night we go out together and then come back and play FIFA soccer on a Sony PlaySation,'' Galiev said. "We always play two to a team, with me and Dmitry (Orlov) on the same side. "The first three times we played Alex and his teammate, we beat them." Then Ovechkin challenged them to another game, with the winner buying dinner. Picture a mongoose inviting a cobra to supper. Ovechkin easily won his dinner. "He wanted to go to a steakhouse,'' Galiev said. "Not Subway."
The memory of Alex Ovechkin both kindly housing and heartlessly pool-sharking the baby Russians always slays me. (One can only hope he waited until they had some show-dough to pay for dinner with.) It's kind of like he was still in his Older Brother stage before ascending to Dad stage, lovingly bullying the kids.

We know Taylor bend over backwards and followed him everywhere because she could. Joe from the outside I am repeating outside stopped attending her events. He used to put in a lot of effort in the first 4-5 years. Taylor never stopped gushing about him. We know how different she was after the break up which happened probably between Arlington and vegas. He is not a horrible asshole who wanted different things now that he is grown and still loved his ex. May be didn't even realise he was taking her for granted and that she would understand. He has a whole life outside of his relationship. His career is a stressful one too. We know they loved enough to finally buy a house, get married and have kids. May be he fucked again knowingly or unknowingly which they couldn't back from. Life happens and as fans we can't hold them accountable. He is going to have a better career after Taylor and I can't be mad at him if he thought that way too. A peaceful life which isn't full of prying eyes and commentary from every individual involved. It is just sad and tragic that they couldn't make it work.
Yeah, from the outside it looks like maybe something changed. But who knows. The good news is that we pretty much know for sure that Taylor’s working on some music right now, so, even if she’s suffering, she still has songwriting to hold on to.

Based on the songs Taylor thinks he is the love of her life, forever and ever, that's my man 13x but SOMETHING shit happened for her to walk away just like that. I don't think it was a gradual "we fell out of love" kinda thing specially when they were bought a house late last year.
Yeah. Buying a house late last year, and what Taylor's said in interviews and songs, doesn't seem to me like something you'd do if there were significant issues at that time or a gradual drifting apart. You'd carry on renting until things resolved themselves one way or the other. However, we're not privy (or entitled) to more details on their relationship and can't really rule it out definitively.
I think it's more likely that something big happened, as Jeannine said, between February and the Arlington shows

Fort Worth is one of the nicest places to live and raise your children. There is nothing that should keep you from starting and planning your life here. However, if you are about to change the location for urgent reasons, you must do it right. Do not run for a new house or settle your house for less money. Before you move out, start with the selling process of your house. Start online advertisements and even call up a few friends. Make sure enough people know about your house sale so that you get ample time to look for a new place.
Tumblr media

All-cash offers can be your best pick. One of the advantages of cash offers is that it involves absolutely no risk of buyer financing fall-through. The all-cash offers are reliable and seem permanent. The buyer understands the commitment when they offer an all-cash deal. They have to be sure of the decision before they offer the cash. The seriousness of the deal prevents the buyer from backing off during the deal.
Yet another perk of all-cash offers is that the procedure closes faster than usual. The buyers try to close the deal as soon as possible to protect their finances. To do so, they speed up the process and get done with it faster than expected. Also, the seller gets cash for their next dream home, which prevents them from getting involved in the loan process.

Best Places Around the Area to See Fall Foliage!
Tumblr media
Autumn’s natural glory will soon be ablaze with color, making it a great time to plan your leaf-peeping. Mid-October is generally the best time to start seeking out fall foliage, and the colors can continue well into November. For an animated map showing the progression of color across the U.S., check out this online illustration from The Farmer’s Almanac.
So where should you go locally to experience autumn at its finest? Here we offer some of the best spots in the DMV for photographing fall scenery – whether it’s for dynamic social media posts, placing your pictures in a frame, or just taking snapshots with your mind.
Tidal Basin
Washington, D.C.
Spanning 107 acres, but just 10 feet deep, the Tidal Basin is well known for its lovely cherry blossoms in the spring, but in the fall these same trees turn a beautiful orange and gold! Enjoy a stroll around an easy two-mile loop.
Theodore Roosevelt Island
George Washington Memorial Parkway Arlington, VA
A two-mile path follows the island’s shore, moving into the swamp and tidal inlet where nature frames views of Washington, D.C. Buy the book “Finding Solace at Theodore Roosevelt Island” by Melanie Choukas-Bradley for an even more meaningful meander.
State Arboretum of Virginia
Blandy Experimental Farm Boyce, VA
Virginia’s State Arboretum spans 172 acres of tree and shrub collections dating back to the early 1930s. You can also experience the glorious golden 300 tree Ginkgo grove every fall.
Georgetown’s Cobblestone neighborhoods
Georgetown, D.C.
Georgetown is renowned for federalist architecture, cobblestone streets, and historic brick and frame row houses, some of which date to the mid-1700s. It’s also an origination point for the historic C & O Canal, a National Park which runs 184.5 miles into Cumberland, Md. Enjoy a fall stroll and consider taking a guided tour.
Rock Creek Park
Washington, D.C.
Created in 1890, Rock Creek Park is the oldest urban park in the National Park Service. Its 1,754 acres generally follows the Potomac River tributary of Rock Creek and includes a golf course, equestrian trails, an amphitheater, and picnic and playground facilities. It also includes Peirce Mill, a water-powered grist mill built in the 1820s.
Seneca Creek State Park
Gaithersburg, MD
More than 50 miles of trails wind through a variety of habitat, including the 90-acre Clopper Lake. A restored 19th-century cabin adds charm to your fall photographs.
Great Falls Park
McLean, VA
Three overlooks within a short walk front the Great Falls Park Virginia Visitor Center allow for spectacular scenery. Two of the overlooks are handicap and stroller accessible.
Great Falls Park
Potomac, MD
Visit the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center on the Maryland side of Great Falls Park, located at mile 14.3 along the C&O Canal towpath in Montgomery County, Md.
Shenandoah National Park
Luray, VA
Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Va., the park stretches 105 miles from the northern entrance in Front Royal to the southern entrance near Waynesboro. Skyline Drive is the main road running the span of the park – a scenic byway that can get especially busy during peak leaf-peeping times.
Harpers Ferry National Historical Park
Harpers Ferry, WV
Almost Heaven, but just a hop, skip, and a jump from the D.C. Metro area, Harpers Ferry is a time capsule nestled in the Blue Ridge mountains where the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers come together and continue eastward to the Chesapeake Bay as the Potomac river. Unfortunately, this fall’s rockslide stabilization project will make the travel to Harpers Ferry a bit tricky, so check your options online or through your favorite phone app.
South Mountain State Park
Boonsboro, MD
This 40-mile park weaves along South Mountain Ridge. Visitors can walk the same paths as the Civil War soldiers who fought at the 1862 Battle of South Mountain, climbing to enjoy breathtaking views.
Rappahannock River Heritage Trail
Fredericksburg, VA
This paved pathway makes for an easy walk, but don’t let the pavement fool you – beautiful views of the Rappahannock River, Old Mill Park, and several historic mills are seen throughout the trail.

[ad_1] The Cotswold villages are an embodiment of the picture-perfect English countryside. But there’s hidden variety in these rural charmers. Here’s our guide to the most beautiful places to visit in the Cotswolds. LAST UPDATE: 6 Nov 2023 Anywhere We Roam is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn a small affiliate commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support – Paul & Mark. The beautiful Cotswolds villages fulfill an England that exists in the dreams of many. Honey-coloured stone cottages with steeply pitched roofs. Rolling green hills dotted with sheep. Boutique gift shops with cool country aesthetics and lavender in abundance. Foodies and artists flock to the Cotswolds, filling cobbled roads with top restaurants and art cool galleries. While it’s a popular destination, many of the best places to visit in the Cotswolds see few visitors. Real working towns with cramped old pubs and a great Cotswolds walk. For more ideas on what to do, read our guide to the best things to do in the Cotswolds. IN THIS GUIDE BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN THE COTSWOLDS 1 – CASTLE COMBE With a lack of tourist shops and a real lived-in feel, Castle Combe is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the Cotswolds. Rows of honey-coloured cottages extend from a 14th-century market square up a gentle slope, framed by a green backdrop. An otherworldly vibe has earned Castle Combe a regular appearance in the film industry and it’s easy to see why. With no cars allowed in the village, you are easily transported to another time. With green forested hills, quaint cottages, a babbling river, and a romantic bridge, Castle Combe is a beautiful place to visit in the UK. WHAT TO DO Take a picnic lunch and sit on the bench by the river opposite the old weaver’s cottages. Framed by the surrounding valley walls, it’s the classic view of Castle Combe. WHERE TO STAY? Book the Manor House for a luxurious break with a Michelin-star restaurant. The King’s Arms in Didmarton is a smart country pub. HIKING TRAILS NEAR CASTLE COMBE CASTLE COMBE CASTLE COMBE BRIDGE 2 – BIBURY Bibury is often described as the most beautiful village in the Cotswolds. It’s centred around a picturesque church and a charming village green. The most famous feature of Bibury is Arlington Row, where 17th-century weaver cottages ascend the gradual rise in the hill. It’s the most iconic photo spot in the Cotswolds. Bibury, and Arlington Row, in particular, is a popular spot for bus trips and it can be teeming with visitors throughout the day. But, if you make it to Bibury for sunrise, you’ll have one of the best Cotswolds villages all to yourself. SWAN HOTEL ARLINGTON ROW WHAT TO DO? Stroll along Arlington Row. See the countryside with our Castle Combe walk. Explore the Rack Isle Nature Reserve. WHERE TO STAY ARLINGTON ROW, BIBURY RACK ISLE NATURE RESERVE ARLINGTON ROW 3 – BROADWAY Broadway is at the foot of the western end of the Cotswolds escarpment. It’s one of the best destinations in the Cotswolds for shopping and modern country style. Old-style tea rooms lure visitors with high tea and fresh scones. Antique shops styled in subtle Cotswolds grey, are crammed with unique quirky pieces. The picturesque high street has drawn famous artists including Claude Monet. He found inspiration in what is now the Abbots Grange Manor House. On top of the nearby Fish Hill is Broadway Tower. This folly is a great place to watch the sunset over the town. BROADWAY TOWER WHAT TO DO? WHERE TO STAY? ST EADBURGHA’S CHURCH BROADWAY TOWER 4 – STANTON The only sign of commercialisation in Stanton is The Mount Inn. Set at the foot of Shenbarrow Hill, the pub is perfectly positioned above the town with sweeping views. On a clear day, see all the way to the Welsh mountains. From the deck of the pub, the consistent architecture of Stanton is displayed in typical Cotswolds style. Stanton manages to create a cosy feel on its own merits, without appearing specifically contrived for tourists.
It is one of our favourite villages in the Cotswolds for a quiet, relaxing break. WHAT TO DO? Stanton is a great base for some excellent country walks. The deck on the Mount Inn overlooking the town is an excellent place to end a classic Cotswolds hike. WHERE TO STAY? To visit Stanton we’d recommend staying around Broadway. We have more suggestions here: where to stay in the Cotswolds. STANTON 5 – MINSTER LOVELL Minster Lovell assumes a veiled location by the banks of the Windrush River. It’s a beautiful tiny village where you can enjoy afternoon tea while watching a game of cricket on the green. But the main reason for visiting Minster Lovell is the picturesque ruins of a 15th-century manor house. Resting on the banks of the river, it’s an idyllic location in the English countryside. There are plenty of picnic spots on the grassy fields on either side of the river, and a weir provides the perfect spot for a swim. Minster Lovell is an untouched Cotswolds village in an idyllic rural setting. WHAT TO DO? Go wild swimming around the crumbling ruins. Take the circular Minster Lovell walk to see the best of the area. WHERE TO STAY? 6 – PAINSWICK The prosperity Painswick enjoyed from the 17th century is evident. The elegant grey limestone buildings makes this one of the more regal Cotswold villages. A maze of cobbled laneways provides plenty of spaces to explore with the village cascading down the side of a hill. The main attraction in Painswick is St Mary’s Church and its immaculate grounds. Decorated with rows of yew trees and surrounded by tombs and monuments, it’s a popular filming location in the Cotswolds. WHAT TO DO? Take a stroll through the fanciful Rococo Gardens on the outskirts of Painswick. Photograph the church grounds. Have a pint in the Royal Oak. WHERE TO STAY? 7 – BOURTON-ON-THE-WATER Bourton-on-the-Water is one of the best villages in the Cotswolds with a range of activities to keep the whole family entertained. A picturesque canal runs down the high street with handsome stone bridges connecting either side of the road. Trendy cafes mix with quaint tea rooms and ice cream stands. Like any small village worth its salt, there are plenty of bakeries It’s a cute and photogenic place to stroll around and jump from cafe to cafe. WHAT TO DO? WHERE TO STAY? BOURTON ON THE WATER 8 – UPPER SLAUGHTER & LOWER SLAUGHTER Upper Slaughter and Lower Slaughter are two tiny but beautiful Cotswolds villages. Building has not taken place in the Slaughters since 1906, so they remain quintessential English rural villages. River Eye – a tributary of the River Windrush – winds its way through the village. Honey-coloured cottages and cute churches dot the banks. There are no shops in either village, just several places along the river to soak up the scenery. WHAT TO DO? Walk the 20-minute trail between the two villages. Alternatively, try our 17-kilometre walk between the Slaughters, Bourton, and Naunton. WHERE TO STAY? LOWER SLAUGHTER 9 – KINGHAM Kingham is a small working community and the best villages in the Cotswolds for foodies. The local pub – The Kingham Plough – is operated under a Heston Blumenthal prodigy. It’s the perfect cosy pub to enjoy a pint and some top-quality cooking after a long day of hiking in the area. The Wild Rabbit crafts culinary masterpieces in an impressive but relaxed setting. It’s not cheap, but it’s great for a special occasion. WHAT TO DO? The nearby Daylesford Organic has a farm shop with an excellent selection of local produce. Grab a few bites to take on a picnic, or have lunch in their modern cafe. WHERE TO STAY? Book a weekend at either the Plough or the Wild Rabbit – two of the best places to stay in the Cotswolds. KINGHAM 10 – LACOCK Lacock is owned and managed by the National Trust so it lacks the lived-in feel of other Cotswold villages. However, the protection of the trust has ensured that Lacock has been well preserved.
It’s largely unchanged since it was established in the 13th century as a wool trading centre.  Half-timber, half-stone cottages line wonky laneways that fill the village with charm and character. Shops have maintained their original simple branding. Films such as Pride and Prejudice and Emma have filmed in this charming Cotswolds village. WHAT TO DO? Visit Lacock Abbey, founded in 1229 by Ela, the Countess of Salisbury. It’s a quirky country house with varying architectural styles inherited over the centuries. WHERE TO STAY? LACOCK LACOCK ABBEY 11 – STOW-ON-THE-WOLD Stow-on-the-Wold is a charming market village in the Cotswolds with a reputation for a vibrant antiques scene. Situated at the top of a hill, the town centres around a large market square which is surrounded by elegant Cotswolds townhouses.   Like many of the best villages, Stow has a wealth of tea rooms and artisanal coffee shop. Stow Town Coffee which roasts its own beans and The Hive does an excellent café lunch. The highlight of a visit to Stow-on-the-Wold is St Edward’s Church. The old door under a tree is one of the most Instagram-able spots in the Cotswolds. WHAT TO DO? Grab a bargain in a vintage shop on the high street. Have lunch at the Porch House, the Oldest Inn in England. Peruse the contemporary British artwork at the Fosse Gallery. WHERE TO STAY? ST EDWARDS CHURCH STOW ON THE WOLD 12 – CHIPPING CAMPDEN Chipping Campden is one of the best Cotswolds villages with a grand high street, lined with handsome, golden houses. They were built by wealthy merchants between the 14th and 17th centuries. The highlights are St James Church, a towering landmark that can be seen from miles away, and the 17th-century Campden House Gateway. Don’t miss the Market Hall which still stands from Chipping Campden’s wool trading glory days. The Woolstaplers Hall was an important wool-buying hall. One of the most popular attractions in Chipping Campden is the thatched-roof houses. On the side streets of the high street, you’ll find examples of grand Cotswold residential architecture WHAT TO DO? Court Barn Museum is a small museum celebrating the creative heritage of Chipping Camden. Hidcote Manor is a 10-minute drive away. Read all the details here: guide to visiting the Cotswolds. Stroll around looking for thatched roofs. WHERE TO STAY? 13 – BURFORD Burford is often considered the gateway to the Cotswolds. It’s located on the River Windrush, and it’s a great place to visit on a day trip to Oxford. The high street which follows a hill down towards the river is one of the most beautiful places in the Cotswolds. Lined with a rambling collection of medieval houses and shops, you’ll find local antiques and delis. There’s a great selection of galleries, bookshops, and of course, classic Cotswolds pubs. St John’s Church is a display of Burford’s prior wealth with memorials to great families who were connected to Henry VIII. WHAT TO DO? Pick up supplies, then head to the nearby Minster Lovell for a picnic. One of our favourite day trips in the Cotswolds. Admire the historic stone cottages on Burford Hill. Pop into the Tolsey Museum, a small free exhibition on local history. WHERE TO STAY? ST JOHN’S CHURCH BURFORD HIGH STREET 14 – CIRENCESTER Cirencester was the second-largest Roman centre in Britain. A significant road structure helped it develop a thriving wool trade. Continuing from this prosperous base, Cirencester is today the largest town in the Cotswolds. The colourful main square, Market Place, mixes Cotswolds stone with pastel-coloured facades and timber-framed architecture. Leading off the square, the huge English Gothic Church of St John the Baptist has a stunning fan-vaulted ceiling. Cirencester Park, just outside the town, is one of the finest landscaped gardens in England. It’s free to enter from 8 am to 5 pm each day. WHAT TO DO? WHERE TO STAY? 15 – SNOWSHILL Snowshill is a small village in the Cotswolds that is often overlooked, but there are a few great reasons to visit.
Firstly, it’s set around a small church green lined with cottages overlooking the countryside. The setting is lovely. Secondly, it’s part of one of the best walks in the Cotswolds. which stops at the Snowshill Arms. The main attraction in the village, however, is the Snowhill Manor. This 16th-century country house is one of the most interesting places to visit in the Cotswolds. It has an enormous collection of objects acquired by its eccentric owner, Charles Paget Wade. There are several listed buildings on the property including the brewhouse and the dovecote. WHAT TO DO? Stroll the gardens at Snowshill Manor, laid out in a series of outdoor rooms with terraces, ponds, and formal beds. Walk the Stanton to Snowshill hike on the Cotswolds Way. WHERE TO STAY? Buckland Manor is a regal stay in a traditional manor house. The Fish is a very cool property with cabins, tree houses, and luxury suites.
