i had a poll asking if yal wanted me to post my wrestling video game reviews here so heres the first one its a review of the game WCW vs nWo World Tour for the N64. TL;DR this game especially for its time pretty much fucks i mean it's just a great game even if it doesn't have a season mode. AKI made awesome wrestling games
this was written in like 2019 as a potential youtube script so if it reads like a youtube script i was writing it to be a youtube script ok ty also i just put in some pictures so it's a little less drab ok ty again
Tumblr media
Graphically, for 1997, World Tour looks pretty good… for the most part. The crowd is a strange flat texture that doesn’t necessarily even resemble a crowd, but it does its job, and reacts accordingly with the crowd noise. The wrestlers themselves generally look good, although body proportions can be totally off at times. Everyone appears to have the same height, meaning Rey Mysterio Jr. and The Giant stand practically shoulder-to-shoulder. It’s quite strange, but besides this, each wrestler has a decent approximation of their real-life look and attire for the era. That is, with the exception of the faces. Sometimes, the faces look good enough, and sometimes they just look totally off. For example, Rick Steiner looks okay, but Scott Hall just looks strange.
There are some strange quirks like the 'back spike' which can be seen every so often, as well as things like parts of a body disappearing from view in certain camera angles. All-in-all, the models themselves are rather detailed, and the faces kind of fall into the back of your mind while you’re playing anyway. Each wrestler in the game has four attires, clearly accounting for the possibility that 4 players would all want to play as the same character. While half of the time, this amounts to alternate colors, this feature is deeper than one may expect. For example, both Hogan and Sting feature their ‘classic’ look in alternate attires. The feature clearly wasn’t just an afterthought by the development team. (2024 edit: also the alternate colors are probably relatively accurate to real world gear they've worn for all i know)
Tumblr media
Each wrestler has a drawn picture as their menu sprite, which sometimes looks great and sometimes just looks odd. It’s quite like the in-game faces in this way.
While the action plays out, the camera angle will often change to give a better or more exciting view of the moves being performed. At first, this may seem distracting, but as the camera angle typically reverts back to the same view by the time you’re back in control of moving your character, it just serves to make the match seem that much more dynamic.
Tumblr media
Each wrestler has a variety of moves at their disposal, which I’ll get into later, but in general, these moves look GREAT. There is a lot of very fluid animation and the sheer variety of available moves goes to show that the developers were passionate about professional wrestling. Especially for the time, the animations in general are top notch. In addition, as wrestlers take damage, they will get visibly weaker, with arms clutching at pains in the chest and head, for example. This level of detail is above and beyond what one would expect from a product of this time. There are also a variety of fighting stances, taunts, etcetera for each wrestler, and the fictional wrestlers even get plenty of totally unique animations. Each character truly feels distinct, from their movesets down to their unique animations, even though they all control the same way.
Tumblr media
There is one arena for each promotion in the game. These are generally unremarkable, and don’t really reflect any actual arenas, but the visual variety is nice. Each arena has differences such as turnbuckle colors and the size of the crowd. The Independent Union even has a very unique Japanese-style ring. Some may be disappointed that arenas such as the one for Monday Nitro were not included, but I’m just surprised the different promotions have this many differences in their arenas, and find them to be a worthy inclusion.
In terms of entrances, there… kind of aren’t any. I say ‘kind of’ as there are match introductions which play out as a name card and a brief taunt by your wrestler. It’s bare-bones, but it’s passable. (2024 edit: this is basically a truncated version of how Japanese wrestling promotions do wrestler introductions)
Tumblr media
Let’s talk about sound. Like the arenas, the music in the game is pretty unremarkable. Unless you play the game a lot, a definite possibility in 1997, you probably won’t remember any of the songs after turning the console off. Most of the tracks have a rock ambiance to them, but they strike me more as Japanese video game music than, say, an edgy late 90s kind of rock you may expect based on the license. There are also no wrestler themes, or WCW-related themes included in the game. Each wrestler seems to have a single sound effect associated with them which they will use pretty much every time they do anything. Most of these are simple grunts, and they’re not, say, voiced by the original wrestler, so they’ll probably fall to the back of your mind as play continues. The aforementioned crowd noise provides a good backdrop to the action. The crowd will ‘ooh’ at moves during their setup, and cheer when the move lands. If a wrestler happens to take an attack to their dick area, the crowd will react with shock. It’s easy to overlook, but the crowd noise does a good job all the same.
Let’s talk roster. This is one MAMMOTH of a roster for the time. Forty-two total wrestlers, each with their own distinct look and move set, in 1997 no less, is nothing short of impressive. There is a caveat here, however. Many WCW fans were and will be disappointed to hear that only about half of the included characters are from WCW, and for that matter, the other half are entirely fictional. This is where the “World Tour” aspect comes into play. Ostensibly, this other half of the roster is foreign wrestlers with all sorts of strange personalities. Unfortunately, this means that for many people, there won’t be much appeal in half of the roster, as they are, for the most part, inherently uninteresting compared to the WCW wrestlers. However, there is a hidden secret behind these characters. Each one is actually a stand-in for a wrestler, mostly Japanese, which wouldn’t have made it into the game otherwise as they didn’t have the license to use those likenesses outside of Japan. So, if names like TAKA Michinoku, Genichiro Tenryu, The Great Sasuke and Abdullah the Butcher interest you, they made the game in the form of these fictional characters. The full moveset for these characters are based on these wrestlers. It’s a smart way to include these move sets, although it may still disappoint fans, as the character who receive these move sets usually bear little resemblance to the wrestler they represent. It is good to have these extra characters, though, as they make the roster fuller than it would otherwise be.
Tumblr media
Back to the WCW guys, there’s 23 of them, and most of them are worthy inclusions. You have guys like Hogan, Hall, Nash, Syxx, Macho Man, DDP, Regal, Sting, Dean Malenko, Ric Flair… if you were a WCW fan at the time, you were pretty much guaranteed to have one of your favorites make the cut. I know most people would have preferred if the entire roster were WCW guys, but by all accounts, this is still a big, impressive roster.
In terms of general presentation, I think WCW vs. nWo World Tour does its job quite well. The biggest issue here for me is a tenuous link to the WCW license. There is, for example, no Monday Nitro arena. There aren’t any WCW belts seen in the game. There’s no commentary of any kind, there’s no music from WCW, there isn’t really anything that relates the game to the WCW license other than the included talent and the logo being seen in the WCW ring. And, of course, half the roster isn’t WCW guys. It’s not a huge deal, but it does give a bit of an air of having the WCW license put on in the final stages of development, which I’m not sure was actually the case.
A big roster doesn’t mean much if the gameplay doesn’t hold up, and fortunately, World Tour delivers. It has a gameplay system I’d describe as easy to pick up but complex to master. The A button provides access to grapples, and the B button handles strikes. The C buttons handle things like running, pinning and exiting the ring, while R and L provide ways to evade or block attacks. Unusually for a Nintendo 64 game, movement is controlled by the D-pad, with taunts and special attacks mapped to the analog stick. You can do a strong version of a strike or grapple by holding down the respective button. For grapples, there are 12 total moves that can be done from a front standing position alone, by using any combination of A or B, up and down, after getting your opponent into a hold with the A button. Moves are context sensitive, you can grapple your opponent at a turnbuckle, from behind, and there’s even different moves on a grounded opponent depending on what side they’re laying on and whether you go for the head or the legs. The opponent can also be irish whipped and attacked while you’re running. There’s a lot of different ways to deal damage to your opponent, and most importantly, all of this has a great flow to it. Reversals can be done by tapping R at the right time, there’s backing away to evade grapples with L, you can use a strike to interrupt the opponent or go for a surprise strong grapple when you catch them guarding too much. In addition, when both you and your opponent go for a grapple at the same time, a test of strength occurs. I’m not sure how this feature works, but it may just be that the winner is whoever can button mash the fastest. Speaking of button mashing, both pin falls and submissions work this way as well. Submissions will occur whenever a wrestler happens to have a submission move in their moveset, so it pays to explore each wrestler’s moveset thoroughly to find out where his best submissions are. The gameplay is a bit slow paced, but it does a fantastic job of emulating an actual wrestling match. As I’ve intimated, the game features simple controls with a lot of depth built in, for those who are interested in getting skilled at the game. There’s even unique maneuvers and moves that I haven’t mentioned, as there are just so many of them for seemingly every situation. Overall, I have no hesitations in saying that based on what I’ve covered already, WCW vs. nWo World Tour was the greatest wrestling game that had been released to America at the time of its release.
We can’t talk about gameplay without bringing up the Spirit meter. This shows how well your wrestler is doing, and is another way that the game emulates wrestling fantastically. When your wrestler is doing well, his Spirit meter will rise, and when it reaches its peak, you are allowed to do special moves. There are two ways to do special moves in this game, done by strong grappling an opponent from the front or back and using the analog stick. If your wrestler is getting beat down, his spirit meter will become smaller. However, much like a real wrestling match, a comeback can be initiated by turning the tide of the match into your favor, and this will inspire the Spirit meter to rise rapidly. The Spirit meter has a surprising amount of depth to it, much like the rest of the gameplay, it isn’t a simple bar you fill up to gain super attacks. Keeping a close eye on your Spirit meter is key to success.
You can go outside the ring and attempt to find weapons given to you by the crowd, but I haven’t found a way to bring these weapons into the ring. Unlike most aspects to the game, the weapons seem to be a bit of an afterthought. You can’t get disqualified, and I haven’t observed weapon attacks to do that much more damage than, say, a regular heavy strike. Additionally, you can cause your opponent to bleed if you have ‘realism’ set to ON. How this passed on a rated K to A game is beyond me, but it’s fun to see happen. As for how this happens, I’m not quite sure. It seems to just happen at random in my experience.
Believe me when I say this, this is a finely crafted game from a gameplay perspective, and it’s still quite fun to play to this day. That especially goes for multiplayer, which was a particular highlight for many people at the time. The Nintendo 64 was equipped with 4 controller ports out of the box, and as such, four players can battle in an all-out war in the battle royal mode. This works in an elimination style, although eliminated wrestlers still stick around and can mess with other players by grappling their feet.
In terms of match types, it’s pretty basic. There’s the standard one on one, tag team matches, a two on one handicap match, and the aforementioned battle royal. That’s all there is in terms of exhibition, but even having a battle royal match in the game made for a great plus to the total package in a time when players probably weren’t expecting things like cage and table matches. Speaking on the tag team matches, they are actually quite fun in this due to your partner’s ability to interrupt the action and help out, whether it be hitting or grabbing an opponent from the ropes, opening an opportunity for their partner to make an attack, breaking up pin attempts, or just jumping into the ring to kick ass. With two players against computers, this can be quite engaging, and I’d imagine it would be even more fun against a second team of players.
There are three other exhibition modes seen on the main menu, these being the eponymous WCW vs. nWo, League, and Tournament. The tournament mode is pretty self explanatory, although there is support for a tag team tournament as well. The league plays out a Round Robin style tournament, commonly seen in Japan. I’d imagine this would take quite some time to complete if you go with the maximum of eight wrestlers and have them all controlled by people. I wonder what was the last time someone actually did that. Hmm. In these modes, matches that include only computer players can be skipped and simulated. WCW vs. nWo mode pits teams of up to 5 against one another in a gauntlet format. One wrestler stays in until they are defeated. It goes on like this until one side has won. Your reward for all of these three modes is the same basic congratulations screen. These modes don’t add a lot to the game, but they certainly don’t take away anything either.
The main single player mode and your path to unlocking this game’s 6 hidden characters is League Challenge. Each promotion in the game has a series of battles to face en route to a championship opportunity. In each promotion, finishing the Heavyweight title run will reward you with a WCW character, most notably DDP and Randy Savage. There are also Tag Team and cruiserwight paths to try out. Upon completing all of the other challenges of a type, a new challenge in a new promotion will open up, allowing you to unlock the strangest characters in the game, Joe Bruiser and BlackWidow. BlackWidow is the only female character, but she works exactly like everyone else and there aren’t any kind of restrictions against fighting or even bloodying her. She does look a bit odd, though. Joe Bruiser, on the other hand, is a boxer who has no grapples to speak of, just a lot of different punches. It’s worth unlocking Bruiser just for how unique and strange he is as an inclusion. Sadly, the hidden promotion doesn’t also unlock a new hidden arena, as the promotion just uses the WCW arena. Once you have these two, you can consider this game finished.
Tumblr media
League Challenge is a pretty straightforward series of matches with no flavor or cutscenes. In the end, you are rewarded with a simple trophy screen and another check mark on the list. Besides the unlockable wrestlers, there isn’t much if any reward, so the tag title paths are essentially pointless. It shouldn’t take very long for most players to unlock all of the hidden characters. The game allows you to pick the difficulty of your computer controlled opponents, from Easy to Medium to Hard, which may add a little spice to this. My biggest issue with this mode is how damn long some of them can take. Some of these championships will require what feels like an endless amount of battles to win, especially the WWW challenges. It gets a bit stale simply doing matches one after the other, so it may be better to chip away at these over time rather than try to get them all done as soon as possible. And as a small note, as Wrath and Glacier are unlocked by doing the fictional promotion Heavyweight paths, they are put onto the selection screen in those promotions. I would have expected them to be put with the WCW characters, but instead they stick out put next to all these fictional wrestlers. Just a bit odd.
Although I have been pretty positive with World Tour so far, there’s a couple of gripes I have with it. For one thing, having only front and back specials means some wrestlers like Hollywood Hogan are out in the cold. His leg drop is just a regular move which requires no preamble and doesn’t do much damage. You can still finish a match by using it, but as it’s not contextualized as a special, it feels a bit odd. As well, Hogan’s actual front special is… a chokehold? Some wrestlers don’t have entirely accurate specials, either, with Nash famously doing a not-Outsider’s Edge, for example. As the moves are generally on point, seeing some guys lacking in terms of accurate specials is a bit disappointing. This also contributes to the ‘not-quite-WCW-enough’ feel that the game has. Another thing that may be an issue to some is that it is impossible to save your progress without a Memory Pak. All it does is save your settings and the League Challenges you’ve defeated, but this means if you don’t own a Memory Pak, you will have to unlock all the characters you want to use every time you turn on the game. Saving via the Memory Pak wasn’t a totally uncommon thing back in 1997, and most N64 fans will most likely have one or two laying around, but it’s worth noting nonetheless.
WCW vs. nWo World Tour is a very solid game. While it may feel rather bare bones by today’s standards, it was revolutionary for the time and basically wrote the book on how 3D wrestling games should work in the future. It’s a hell of a lot better than contemporary games such as WWF War Zone, and is still a fun time today. With no creation aspects and a simple arcade mode for single player content, wrestling fans may find themselves uninterested after a while. The gameplay is the main star here, however, and with a big roster, good graphics for the time, a selection of unique arenas and the famous battle royal mode, World Tour stands up to this day as a good wrestling game, and a great starting point for the AKI/THQ wrestling game series.
+Revolutionary, skill-oriented gameplay +Large roster including not just WCW but foreign wrestlers as well under aliases, each with their own unique moveset +Stellar animation work along with solid graphics for its time +4-player Battle Royal and a variety of side modes such as tournaments give the game multiplayer replay value -Single-player League Challenge mode is no-frills arcade style, with little in the way of personality, which gets repetitive -More WCW names could have been included -Saves need to be done with a Memory Pak -Not a lot of content outside of the standard Exhibition matches -Some wrestlers don’t have their accurate finishing moves, either because of a wrong move choice, or because their finishing move doesn’t fit one of the 2 Special move types included

Alright I promised it so here’s my top 20 matches
Now a quick heads up, this isn’t just going to be a retread of my 5-star list. That’s more of a list of what I think is the best matches in the world, while this is more matches that I in particular like and/or hold sentiment for me. Though there will inevitably be overlap
Honorable mentions:
Hangman Adam Page vs Bryan Danielson 12/15- This match is basically number 21. this is the best AEW world title match and I love it sooo much but it just barely gets eeked out by the other 20
Asuka vs Ember Moon Takeover Brooklyn 3- one of the best NXT women’s matches and just barely didn’t make the cut. If they were to do this with modern Athena this would soar in my personal rankings Bull Nakano vs Aja Kong 11/4- an excellent finale to Aja's long title chase and her crowning as the new top boss of AJW
Kaientai DX vs Gran Hamada, Gran Naniwa, Masato Yakushiji, Super Delfin, and Tiger Mask 4- great and extremely fun multiman tag and a perfect primer for Michinoku Pro's style
Daniel Bryan vs Randy Orton 6/24- One of Randy's best matches and probably the best PG era no DQ match. THE LIST: 20. Bryan Danielson vs Kenny Omega, 4/12/09- a cartoonish and lighthearted match before each man went on to dominate the world. This is probably the most farcical match on this list but for good reason. it's an excellent display of both men's comedy chops, crowd work and eventually a sprint of both men's in ring capabilities. I delightful foot note
19. Cody vs Dustin Rhodes, 5/25/19- The Match that made me go "oh yeah, AEW's gonna work." Bar none Dustin's best match as he and his brother honor their late father's legacy by drenching themselves in blood. I know Dustin getting busted open was an accident but it added so much to the sprit of the match.
18. WALTER vs Ilja Dragunov, 8/22/21- This is the best NXT match of all time. A passionate and brutal rematch of their 2020 encounter. Dragunov shows he truly does have that dog in him as with a chest made of hamburger meat and a gash on his forehead, physically clobbers WALTER into submission
17. Steve Corino vs Yoshihiro Tajiri, 5/14- This is probably my most self indulgent pick on this list as I feel a lot of people could be turned off by Corino's racist pre match promo. I justify my liking of this match by going "DID YOU SEE HOW HARD TAJIRI KICKED THAT RACIST FUCK'S HEAD?!" Tajiri gives Corino one of the most satisfying beat downs I've ever seen and it rocks so hard.
16. Tsuruta Gun vs SGA 4/20- best 6-man tag in wrestling history, every participant plays their part perfectly. Tsuruta Gun's monumental hater energy is prevalent in all 3 members, Jumbo's ongoing grouchy ace energy, Taue fighting to prove he belongs with the vets, and Fuchi's the evil old man viciously harassing his younger opponents. Meanwhile Misawa, Kawada and Kobashi are in a constant state of white hot babyface sprit that does not let up the entire match.
15. Rey Misterio vs Eddie Guerrero 10/27- The perfect encapsulation of WCW's cruiserweight division. Eddie clawing and slamming Rey with the viciousness only a rudo like himself can show off. Meanwhile Rey shows of just why he's one of the best underdog babyfaces as he uses everything in his book to counteract Eddie's harsh offence. Special shoutout to Rey's The Sprit gear here as it works with the theming of the PPV and as a visual metaphor for a Luchador's mask being a part of themselves.
14. E&C vs The Hardy Boys vs The Dudley Boys 4/1- WWE's best stipulation match with 3 of their best tag teams ever. TLC 2 is the wrestling equivalent to watching the police car pile up from the end of Blues Brothers. An insane series of mesmerizing car crashes in rapid precession.
13. Akira Taue vs Toshiaki Kawada 4/1- These 2 start their own independent blood feud while inside the bigger blood feud that is Tsuruta Gun vs Super Generation Army. Taue and Kawada go at each other like 2 beta fish in the same tank, fast and violently. Taue in particular does the rare but awesome All Japan blade job. a dark horse in the 4 Pillars cannon
12. Eddie Kingston vs Jun Akiyama 11/19- The proper match itself is a good time and one of Eddie's sleeper hits, but the post match is special to me. Eddie showing respect to one of his all time heroes and that hero showing an equal amount of respect back is the only time a wrestling match made me cry. The exact moment I realized who my favorite wrestler is, hail to the Mad King.
11. KENTA vs Ricky Marvin 10/15- This match is one of the best sprints I've ever seen. The moment Marvin launches himself at KENTA begins 2 minuets of the 2 men throwing the sickest strikes and nastiest bombs I've ever seen. Gets everyone I've shown it to jumping out of their seats
10. CM Punk vs John Cena 7/17- Punk snatches victory from the jaw of a corporation. Punk truly attains his 2nd City Saint nickname and the title of generational talent. Cena's no slouch here either as he does his patented one night stoic heel routine like it's 2006 all over again.
9. Jon Moxley vs Wheeler YUTA 4/6- This is my most biased pick as I was there live in the arena for this, but also it's the best match I've ever seen live, so it evens out. This is the match that convinced me Yuta is a guy to look out for. Jon Moxley initiates Wheeler Yuta into the BCC through blood and carnage. I was physically leaping out of my seat as Yoots bit and clawed his way to meet Mox on his level. While he failed to beat Mox, Wheeler's sheer tenacity proved he deserves to stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the best wrestlers in the world.
8. Kenta Kobashi vs Kensuke Sasaki 7/18- I lovingly described this match to a friend as "if 2 fridges worked out and hated your chest." Kobashi vs Sasaki is one of the most Dudes Rock matches ever in a medium designed for shit that makes you go Dudes Rock. watch that chop off in the middle of this match and not get hype I dare you.
7. Daniel Bryan vs John Cena 8/18- This is John Cena's best match in his best genre, all timer wrestler sets their legend in stone by surpassing Big Match John. Bryan that this point was, you know, an exceptional technician with a storied career outside of The Fed. But this particular bout cemented him as a star so bright Even the WWE couldn't look the other way as oceans of people rallied behind that little harry hippie.
6. Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada, 6/3- This match is mythical. A short hand for greatest of all time for those in the know. In the early years of their decade spanning war, Toshiaki Kawada throws everything in his arsenal at Misawa. In the face of this offence, the Ace manages to have an all timer comeback. I first watched this while on a plane ride and by the time the match was over I didn't ever realize the plane had landed, I was so enthralled I lost track of time.
5. Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada, 6/6- Buuuut this is my favorite match between the 2. Years later into the feud, Misawa and Kawada have fought so many time and have elevated into a barrage of heavy bombs, stiff strikes and tight grapples. Kawada is an absolute freak at this point, desperate for his first win and eating everything the Ace has in store. Despite all his efforts, the heartbreak sets in as Misawa once again vanquishes Dangerous K. The ending is the same as always but hits hard, Kawada was so close, but victory slips away yet again.
4. The Briscoes vs FTR 12/10- I find it fitting the late great Jay Briscoe's last great match, the last Great Briscoes match, sits atop the heap as the best tag team match. Blood and metal fly. Jay's bleed, Mark's bleeding, Dax and Cash are bleeding. hell even the ref gets in on the blood. A grand farewell to the best team, dead or alive.
3. Terry Funk vs Atsushi Onita, 5/5- This match is a beautiful as it is violent and boy, is it violent. Onita and Funk slug each other as their bodies are pelted with explosions as the hit real barbwire. The battle makes these great transitions as it goes from all out hatred to desperation as the clock winds down, then finally one of the grandest acts of kindness I've ever seen in a match. Onita, realizing Funk will get caught in the explosion, show his foe some humanity and shields his near lifeless body from the final bomb. The best ending to any match I've ever seen
2. Shinobu Kandori vs Akira Hokuto, 4/2- This. Is. War. Hokuto and Kandori go at each other from minute one with unparalleled animosity. They're snappy, they're agile, they are vicious. Kandori's murderous submission holds, Hokuto's brilliant dives and bombs, THAT TOMBSTONE ON THE TABLE. Undoubtedly the greatest women's match ever, no chance of it being topped.
Kenta Kobashi vs Samoa Joe 10/1- The perfect dream match. 2 of the best to ever do it, at the hottest time for the promotion, at the zenith of both men's careers. Kobashi is fresh off his legendary reign of fire with the GHC heavyweight title. Joe's in that mythical period of his career where he's the best wrestler who ever lived. It is 2 unparalleled greats colliding likes stars, and the explosion is spectacular

Pro Wrestling Illustrated: 1995 THE YEAR IN WRESTLING. March 1996
MATCH OF THE YEAR: DIESEL VS. SHAWN MICHAELS 16,710 votes
For four months, fans waited for this one–and a worthwhile wait it was.
Until Survivor Series 1994, Diesel and Shawn Michaels were he best of friends. Going into that pay-per-view, they  were also the WWF World tag team champions. But a disagreement in an eight-man tag team match made them the bitterest of enemies. Shawn remained a rulebreaker, while Diesel went the fan favorite route. And three days later, “Big Daddy Cool” became the WWF World champion.
Everyone wondered when these two former friends would finally meet, one-on-one, with the World title at stake.
Everyone found out when it would be on January 22, when Michaels won the Royal Rumble and earned a World title shot against Diesel at WrestleMania XI.
Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Lawrence Taylor at WrestleMania was good, but Shawn vs. Diesel was better. It lived up to all the prematch hype, and for the third consecutive year, Michaels was involved in our Match of the Year.
Diesel pounded his old buddy early on in the bout. “The Heartbreak Kid,” as everyone expected, showed tremendous resiliency. He clotheslined the World champion over the top rope, executed an over-the-top-rope flying bodypress, then spent a few minutes trying to wear Diesel down. He used a flying elbowsmash from the top rope and a sleeperhold.
Then came the turning point. While Michaels and Diesel were brawling outside the ring, referee Earl Hebner, in an attempt to keep Sid Vicious, Michael’ Bodyguard, from getting involved, twisted an ankle. That prevented him from getting back into the ring quickly. It may have also prevented Michaels from becoming the World champ, because Shawn superkicked Diesel and had him pinned for at least 10 seconds before Hebner crawled back to make a count.
Diesel recovered, caught Michaels with two boots to the face, and “jackknifed” him for the win at 20:40.
“Incredible!” wrote Ken Wallace of Topeka, Kansas. “I didn't think Diesel could stay with Shawn for a match that lasted 15 minutes or more. And even in defeat, Michaels was terrific.” Everyone knows what happened the next night. These two rivals became friends again. We may never see a Shawn-Diesel rematch, but even if we don’t we’ll always have memories of this thrilling bout.
RUNNERS-UP
JEFF JARRETT vs. SHAWN MICAHELS: 15,831 votes
First runner-up:  “The Heartbreak Kid” strikes again! A 20-minute thriller between two terrific athletes is the simplest way to describe the July 23 In Your House II match in which Michaels won his third Intercontinental title. A powerful superkick to the jaw was all it took for Michaels to finish off “Double-J” after The Roadie accidentally tripped his employer.
HARLEM HEAT vs. THE NASTY BOYS: 13,798 votes
Second runner-up: The Nastys won the WCW World tag belts from Booker T and Stevie Ray in this Slamboree slugfest. The result was noteworthy because Jerry Sags fought half the match on his own after Brian Knobs was injured before the bout. It was the Heat’s legdrops vs. the Nastys’ piledrivers, and it ended when Sags pinned Booker after a top-rope elbowsmash.
PSICOSIS vs. REY MISTERIO JR.: 6,620 votes
Third runner-up: These two masked superstars, rivals in Mexico's AAA, brought their feud to ECW on September 16 and contested a bout that featured stunning aerial moves. Misterio at 5’3” and 140 pounds, beat his 5’10”, 200-pound rival in a match that was highlighted by Misterio diving from the ring apron onto Psicosis , who was lying in the third row of the audience!
VOTES FOR OTHERS (15,187)
Some of the top vote-getters who did not capture a runner-up spot include: January 22: Diesel vs. Bret Hart; April 2: Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Lawrence Taylor; June 18: Brian Pillman vs. Alex Wright; August 4: Tony Anthony & Tracey Smothers vs. The Heavenly Bodies; August 26: Eddy Gurrero vs. Dean Malenko; August 27: Shawn Micahels vs Razor Ramon.

Tumblr media
VENGEANCE IS HERE. This is a very big night for you. It’s something you’ve been waiting for. Just to get your hands on Torrie and finish what she started.
Tumblr media
The camera pans up on Doctor Smiley, who’s going through some of his notes.
“I know this night is very important to you. I’m glad you came. Debra gave me a call, she’s concerned you’ve been…..on a downward spiral.”
Once the camera switches towards you, the crowd cheers.
You’re not sure what he means. You’ve never felt better. “Well, I feel fine. There’s nothing wrong, from what I know of.”
Doctor Smiley simply nods, then writes something down. It’s silent for a moment, but he looks up towards you. “Plaid?”
“What about it?”
“New, isn’t it?” He questions. “If my memory serves correctly, that seems a little off from your normal attire.” It’s not much, but the jacket you’re wearing is telling him a lot. “Well, to be more modern, it’s just not your style.”
It makes a small smile grow on your face, the thought of Raven clouding your mind. You cross your legs. “A little recommendation from a friend, that’s all. Don’t you think I look nice?”
You’re reticent. He should’ve known. He also pencils this down, not answering your other question. “Right. I’m sure. Speaking of friends…how do you feel about Torrie Wilson? It’s to my understanding you two aren’t seeing eye to eye.”
What a wonderful question.
“When I think about Torrie, all I have are negative feelings.” You say. “I feeel…like I want to give her comeuppance.”
“…Would you say you want vengeance?”
“Yeah.” You nod. “That’s exactly what I’m saying.”

BACKSTAGE // 6:56 PM
Earlier that night, you and Torrie were going back and forth in the training center, rehearsing the match for the night. You two had a decent amount of spots, not too over the top. All you two wanted to do was to showcase your strength and hers.
Outside of a kayfabe standpoint, having a match with her made you thrilled. It reminded you of the ones you had in WCW from time to time.
It’s shaping up to be a good night. Even the other matches had you excited.
SCOTTY 2 HOTTY & ALBERT VS. CHRISTIAN AND TEST
EDGE VS. WILLIAM REGAL (INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP)
[NAME] VS. TORRIE WILSON
JEFF HARDY VS. MATT HARDY
DUDLEY BOYZ VS. KANE AND BIG SHOW (TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS)
THE UNDERTAKER VS. ROB VAN DAM (HARDCORE CHAMPIONSHIP)
TRISH STRATUS VS. JACQUELINE (WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP)
CHRIS JERICHO VS. THE ROCK VS. STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN VS. KURT ANGLE
You plan to interfere with Matt and Jeff’s match after your own. Whether it be attacking Lita or purposely messing both men up, you’re there to cause trouble.
Truth be told, you’re going to try and fuck with everyone tonight and if anyone tries to fuck with your match, they’ve got a world full of pain coming back, tenfold.
But your match…..you’d finally show the WWF universe how happy you were. How happy that Raven finally took you under his wing, he made you his and you felt like you were apart of him.
You’ll tell the world as much as soon as you get into that ring.
Before that, Lita needed to be dealt with. You need to show her who she’s dealing with.
You want to get inside her head and most importantly, you want to worm your way inside the mind of Matt and Jeff. Those Hardy Boyz. Everyone loves them. You’d hear everyone scream for them as loud as they could whenever they’d show up.
Everyone loves Team Extreme!
You don’t.
You hate Team Extreme.
It’s clear to you that you have one brother wrapped around your finger already. The other wasn’t too easy to sway.
So before you know it, you find yourself rummaging through her suitcase like a madman. Cargo pants, crop tops…something that’ll make you look like Lita. Would fishnets top it all off?
For a moment, you considered buying a red wig so you could even mock her flaming hair. Is there enough time?
…Yes, yes there is. There’s always enough time. You’ll find a way to make it work after your match.
While you originally considered coming out to Edge’s match, you knew that wound was still fresh and you were still thinking of plans for him. It wouldn’t be fun if you did interference every match, honestly. You wanted to mix things up.
Actually, wait. It would make it even more interesting if it was fresh, wouldn’t it? Bah, you’ll think it over on the ride to the nearest costume or beauty store.
Either way, you needed to go and go quick, especially if you want your little scheme to work.
Wait! Maybe you’ll go out first. That way, no one would expect you coming out dressed as Lita later.
Yeah, that’s exactly what you’ll do! You already had something nice on, so why not just show up in all your glory? You may even help Edge win.
You just hope he’d be grateful, else, you’d have to teach him a few new things. You figure it’s good enough to make a guest appearance with the clothes you have on.
“Oooh, hey, [Name]!” Stacy’s voice comes from the door. She stands there for a moment before walking over to you with a smile. She looks nice tonight. “I’m glad you’re here. I just wanted to wish you luck tonight.”
You still feel pretty suspicious, but she’s not going out of her way to attack you or anything.
“You know, I’ve been looking for you!” She says, taking a seat on the small bench. She then focuses on zipping up one of her shoes. “Me and you have no problems! I just want you to rip her head off, okay?”
It’s nice of her to come and give you some sort of pep talk, despite how violent it sounded.
“Right. Yeah, I’ll do that.” You say, rubbing your temples.
“By the way, you look really tired, [Name]. Are you okay?” She asks. “Well, actually, how have you been? I haven’t been able to catch you backstage.”
It’s true, she hasn’t. Quite frankly you didn’t trust her at first, but she made her status clear the last time you saw her.
“I’ve been okay. I feel like myself.” It was a little true. Stacy probably doesn’t know about the Raven and Jeff situation, so you’re happy Lita kept her mouth shut, even if she didn’t know the whole thing in its entirety.
You take that back. You’re pretty sure Jeff told her…
“Alright…” Stacy gives you a smile and thankfully doesn’t press further. “When’s the next time we’re going shopping?”
“I dunno,” You shrug. “The next time I can actually see the Dutchess backstage?”
“Oh, you!” She bats her hand at you, then stands up from her spot. “I think we’re both really busy. I’m sure we’ll get around to it. There are so many things I see that remind me of you, I’m itching to dress you up!”
Of course. Her and Torrie always had a habit of putting you through rings of hell, dressing you up in what they think would fit you….
Stacy gives you a wink and you roll your eyes. She lightly hits your shoulder. “Don’t be like that. Hey, I’ll talk to you later, okay? I’m sure Bubba and D’von are looking for me. I just wanted to stop by.”
“I don’t mean to hold you back. I’ll see you later then.”
“You’re fine!” She reassured. With that bright smile of hers, she’s just about to leave the room before you call out to her.
“Wait! Do you happen to have a spare robe..?”
Tumblr media
BACKSTAGE // 7:04 PM
This may have been the worst decision in your life, and shit, you’ve made some pretty bad decisions before.
Stacy was more than happy to loan you one of her robes. You were too afraid to question why she carried it around in her suitcase. You guess she’s ready for anything, even an impromptu swimsuit contest or something.
She didn’t know what you were up to and you’d rather keep it that way.
Your next mission is to find Chris Jericho. You had already changed into your ‘gift’ and put on a robe right over it. You’re a little ashamed to be doing this, especially with the cameras now on you, but Hunter asked for you to get it done.
You’re sure it’ll be worth it in the long run. Everything will be okay, even if you feel like you’re going to scream. Thanks to the advice from some producers, you find Jericho refilling a cup of water.
Alright, time to get your game face on.
You take a deep breath and strut on over to him. “Hey there.” You hope you don’t sound too forced, you really hate talking to him.
“Ugh, it’s you again.” He doesn’t seem happy to see you. “The hell do you want this time?” If you didn’t know any better, you’d think he was about to toss that cup of water on you.
“Don’t worry. I’m not here to fight or anything..” This time, you force a smile. “I actually just wanted to talk to you alone.”
“What’s there to talk about? If you think I’m dropping out of the title match, you can kick rocks.”
You try not to let his words get to you. It takes everything in your power not to reply with a snarky remark.
“Well, for starters, I don’t want to fight with you anymore. I want to make amends.” He doesn’t seem swayed, so you do your best to turn up the charm. “You know….I’ve always really, really liked you. I just didn’t know what to say.”
He raises an eyebrow, but the smirk growing on his lips tell you that you’ve got him fooled. “Yeah?”
“Yeah.” You nod. “Why should we fight anymore? Tonight, if you show up to my hotel room, I’ll make up for what was lost.” Almost on cue, you show him what you’re wearing under the robe and close it quickly.
God, you’re cringing so bad inside. One day you’ll look back on this segment and cry.
You give him one last smile and walk away down the hall.
The plan is in action. You’re sure Hunter will be happy you’ve done your due diligence. You’ve gotta throw some of your clothes back on now to make it for Edge’s match!
You’re so sure that he’s waiting on you. You just know him so well.
Tumblr media
VENGEANCE // 7:15 PM
And you seem to be just in time. With the match just in its beginning, you nearly tripped on some cords as you made your way toward gorilla position.
They need to clean it up. What if you tripped and busted your head open? You wish you could submit a complaint somewhere. But then again, Mr. McMahon would probably pop a blood vessel trying to figure out who the hell did it.
The moment you step out onto stage, the crowd starts to cheer. This stage was huge. For a moment you stand up at the top, just watching the two lock up.
‘What’s [Name] doing out here?!’ JR asks.
‘Hey! Tell her to come over here!’ Jerry tries to get your attention to no avail.
JR can only shake his head. ‘I don’t think she wants to even be within 4 feet of you, King.’
The both of them really were going at it in this lockup, with Edge getting the best of Regal by shoving him into the corner. You want a closer look, so you come down the ramp.
It is only when the referee forces him off of Regal, was when you were noticed. He runs a hand through his hair, moving most of it from his face. He must’ve thought he was dreaming.
You open your arms. This was no dream. This was reality! He comes over to the ropes, staring down at you quizzically.
“I know you missed me!” You exclaim.
Edge is just about to respond but Regal comes over and smashes his forearm into his back. That was definitely your fault, but you shrug it off.
Regal was starting to take over, grabbing Edge by the hair and lifting him up. Yet again, they lock up, an aggressive show of strength from the both of them.
While they’re doing that, you skip on over to the side of the apron towards the announcer tables.
You can see Edge’s Intercontinental Championship sitting nearby, so you go ahead and grab it.
It’s a really pretty title. As are most of the WWF titles. Once you pick it up, you run your fingers along a continent, and the crowd looks at you curiously.
It’s not like you were gunning for it yet..though you wouldn’t mind if they put you in the running. Everyone seemed to like what you’re doing though.
‘You said she wouldn’t come within 4 feet of me, JR,’ King starts to say. ‘But I think you’re just jealous!’
‘She’s a nice young lady, I’ll give her that, but she’s got some sense.’ He responds.
‘If she’s got some sense, why’s she got her hands on the Intercontinental title?! Doesn’t she know it’s nearly impossible for a women to even hold it?’
‘I think you’re forgetting about someone…’
You’re too busy admiring the title to even pay attention to them and the match. Running a finger over one of the continents, it makes you notice how beautiful it was.
Then again, it seems to be a common theme with WWF titles. Whoever created the design needs some sort of raise. But not if it’s Mr. McMahon, of course.
You’re so focused on the title that you don’t even notice a baffled Edge making his way towards you.
“The hell are you doing?” He asks, lightly shaking your shoulder.
“I came to see you!” You say, a smile on your face. “Didn’t you miss me?!”
“..What?!“ You weren’t sure if he couldn’t hear you or couldn’t believe what you said. You figure it’s the former when he continues talking. “I don’t want you out here! Put the title down and go backsta—!”
Taking advantage of the situation, Regal had slid out of the ring and came over to shove Edge right into you. The both of you fall over, with Edge landing right on top of you.
It didn’t help you held the title in your hands. That fall completely knocked the wind out of you.
“That’s no way to treat a lady, now is it, you pillock?!” Regal taunts, grabbing Edge off of you and throwing him into the announcer table.
You groan in pain as you try making your way onto your knees. Now you’re angry! You finally get up to your feet and dust yourself off. You gently set the title belt onto the apron, before running over and jumping onto Regal’s back.
You can see the flashes of many cameras, but you’re too busy trying to claw his eyes out. You try to pry his hands away from his face, but he’s just not budging. You resort to try and choking him out to no avail.
‘[Name]’s jumping on the back of William Regal! What’s she doing?!’
‘Is she insane?! What’s wrong with her?!’
Edge watches this in awe. What the hell was wrong with you? He wants to pull you off and knock (figuratively, of course) some sense into you, but it seems like you’re helping him out in the long run.
You jump off of Regal’s back and allow Edge to come forward with a clothesline. That’ll teach him! They’ll probably be fighting on the outside for quite a bit.
Man, Edge knocking into you really hurt. You may have made it worse for yourself by jumping on Regal. You’re a bit sore and out of breath, leaning on the apron for leverage. It takes you a minute to recover, but when you do, you notice that Regal sends Edge flying into the ring post that’s behind you.
You quickly get the hell out of the way. That could’ve been worse…
“Watch where you’re going!!” You yell, trying to back away from the scene. And for good measure, you stick your tongue out at Regal.
Of course, he doesn’t notice, fiddling nearby the ring’s fabric skirt and shoving something into his trunks. What did he just get out of there?!
You don’t exactly want to stick your hand down there and find out…
That collision definitely left Edge out cold. Regal grabs him by the hair and throws him into the ring, a little too close by the ropes.
Once he tries to pin him, you grab his leg and set it on the rope. Thankfully, the referee didn’t see you put it there. Just in the nick of time too…
Regal gets off, glaring at you. You just smile in response. He could’ve won there..but no! You didn’t let that happen!
He tries to powerbomb Edge this time, just a little bit further from the ropes so there’s no accident like that again, and then pins him. Fortunately, Edge kicks out at two. This is really bad..
You’re not even sure if Edge can get up. The referee comes over and tries to check on him, so Regal turns away and fishes into his trunks for what he took earlier.
You can see it as clear as day! Those were brass knuckles. If he hits Edge with that, it’s night night for him! You don’t want that to happen, so you jump up onto the ring apron to catch Regal’s attention. You need to do it long enough so Edge can recover.
“Hey!” You yell. He’s a little bit of ways from you, so it’s hard to grab him…
He turns over to you curiously, then tries to ‘shoo’ you away. But then he just stops. Regal turns to look at you and crosses his arms. “Actually, I’m glad you’re up here, young lady, I’ve got a bone to pick with you!”
Now you’ve got him! You’re interested, too. What ever could it be?!
You don’t even get to ask ‘what is it?’ before he continues to speak. “You have quite the attitude problem! You don’t jump on a gentleman’s back! There are other ways to resolve your anger!”
It makes you remember that he too, was involved in Doctor Smiley’s session. Maybe you should heed his advice….?
Yeah, right! “The only way to resolve my anger is violence!” You say, jumping off of the apron. Regal waves his hand at you and turns around to be met with…A SPEAR!
Edge finally is able to get Regal down long enough to secure the win. The crowd cheers wildly as you grab his title and hold it up to him.
He takes it and you're outta there almost immediately, circling around the ring and heading up the stage ramp.
And yet again, Edge can only look at you in awe. You’re crazy, you have to be. But he can’t help but to admire you for coming to his aid.
While you blow a kiss from the ramp, he makes the motion to catch it. He’s a little starstruck.
Perhaps you haven’t burnt all your bridges after all.
Tumblr media
VENGEANCE // 7:34 PM
You don't even have time to feel tired tonight. With your match being right before Jeff & Matt's, you feel like you're going to be on your feet all night. Perhaps you'll get a break before the Undisputed Championship match..
You’ve already changed into your ring gear, so now you’re waiting for Raven. Normally, you’d feel calm when it comes to matches, but with him being there, it just made you all the more antsy.
“You’re shaking.”
Your head immediately turns to Raven, who had walked up to you with his hands in his pockets. It took everything in you not to run and jump on him. “I’m just a little nervous.” You reply, crossing your arms.
He doesn’t say anything at first. “You’ll be fine, babe. Don’t worry about it.” The smirk that starts to play on his face tells half a story.
You’re almost thrown for a loop when he uses a pet name. You’re sure he was just testing it out, but it feels like you have butterflies in your stomach.
“By the way, I’ve been thinking.” He continues. “You and I were in WCW, yet you’ve never spared me a glance. Why?”
You think about it for a minute. Creative in WCW never really let you stray too far from what you’re doing, despite it being a little messy. “I don’t know. The writers over there didn’t even know what they’re doing. Look at the bright side though, I’m here with you now!”
You outstretch your arms. He stares at you for a moment. You almost think he won’t hug you, yet he comes over and wraps his arms around you.
“…I want you to prove your loyalty to me.” He says.
You tilt your head. “How?” Anything he asked, you’re willing to do.
Raven detaches from you and sets his hands in your shoulders. “There’s certain people you must get rid of. They pose a threat to not only myself, but our….” He trails off. You get what he means.
You don’t want anyone to get in the way of your relationship with Raven. Not now, not ever.
“The first person is Jeff Hardy. Once a contender for the Hardcore title…..turned nuisance to the WWF. Even worse, a nuisance for us, [Name].”
You just nod your head with a smile. Whatever he says, goes. Was Jeff really the problem?
Before he can continue on, someone from production comes over to you two. “You’re on, [Name]. Get out there.” Now you can hear your muffled music echoing over the arena.
Both of you were a little startled, but put your game faces on and head through that curtain. The adrenaline is running through your veins all over again once you’re met with the crowd.
The bell rings three times and Lillian is in the ring, ready to announce. “Ladies and Gentleman, this is a match set for one fall. Making her way to the ring, accompanied by Raven, [Name]!!”
You two walk out to stand on stage. Before you continue to walk down the ramp, Raven holds out his hand. You look at him in bewilderment, but it turns into a smile as you entwine your fingers with his. You’re thrilled he even let you hold it.
‘That Jezebel’s holding Raven’s hand!’ JR exclaims. ‘She seems to be just about anywhere lately. What’s going on in that head of hers?!’
‘I told ya JR, that mental hospital will be opening as soon as we kind find those scattered loose screws of hers!’ King says. ‘And let’s put Raven in there too! Ha!’
The both of you make it to the ring. You opt to take the steps as Raven climbs onto the apron and opens the ropes for you.
You feel elated. It’s a small gesture, but it means a lot to you nonetheless. Once you get in, you walk over and motion for a mic to speak.
Raven shuffles over to sit in the corner in the meanwhile.
“…All I have to say is one thing. The day I’ve walked into the WWF, everyone wanted to know about me..but I feel like everyone liked the thought of me.” You pause for a minute, trying to gather your words. “No one saw through me like Raven did. I can feel his pain and he can feel mine.”
You throw your mic to the side (giving it a tiny kick so it can reach the edge). Torrie’s music starts to play and you walk over to Raven’s corner to sit right in between his legs.
He’s actually pretty warm. It’s also a pretty comfortable spot. You turn your head over to the front as Torrie begins to make her way to the ring.
“Making her way to the ring from, Torrie Wilson!”
You have to admit, what she’s wearing is kind of cute. The color pink really suits her. Of course, you’d never say that out loud. You’re just ready to wrestle her.
Raven nudges you slightly, and with a whispered “good luck”, he moves away and gets out of the ring to spectate.
You stand up from your spot. Things are finally starting to heat up. The crowd is a little bit anxious.
On one hand, they hope you don’t punish Torrie too much. Then on the other hand, they hope you can get your revenge. If they’re lucky enough, maybe they’ll get some clothing shed!
Not! You don’t want any wardrobe malfunctions or any ripping of clothes tonight. This is supposed to be a serious match.
The bell rung again and you two walk around in circles. You two weren’t friends right now. You were sworn enemies, nothing less, nothing more. Torrie put herself in this spot, so you were going to make sure she regret it.
It hurts you more than anything to have to fight an old friend, but in order to get your message through her thick skull, you didn’t have a choice.
You don’t want to disappoint Raven. In fact, you just wanted to impress him. Show him you could do this. That you live up to whatever hype there is.
When Torrie tackled you down almost effortlessly, that was when you knew your head needed to be in the game. There definitely was animosity behind her hits, but rest assured there will be animosity behind yours too.
…You’re gonna be honest. Torrie is as green as grass. She always has been. Nothing wrong with that, it just makes it a little harder to carry her through the match. She wasn’t alone though, Stacy (although you technically haven’t wrestled her directly) seemed pretty green too.
You can’t help but to laugh. One time, Lita referred to those two as ‘the blondies’, notoriously known for being quite new and not knowing what’s going on.
She trashed them so bad that night, then told you that you’re the only one that could really wrestle. It was sweet, but you felt kinda bad she wasn’t fond of Torrie and Stacy.
You roll over her and start hitting her back, getting your quick just desserts.
Getting off, you stare at her as she sets her hand on the ropes in an effort to recover. Torrie takes a good look at you, her eyes narrowing once she sees you laughing.
Before she could fully get up, you come over to grab a fistful of blonde hair before slamming her right back to the mat. You’re not quite done with her yet. This is only the first stage of pain you’ll put her through tonight!
You saw a wrestler do this move a very long time ago, but you can’t remember their name for some reason. You put one foot on each side of her head and step on her hair, then lift her arms up.
The referee starts to yell at you to “let go” and to “watch the hair”.
You eventually let up, Torrie writhing around on the mat in pain. You come over and lift her face up. “C’mon, Torrie!“ You scream, slapping her for good measure. “That all you got?! Get up!”
You decide to force her to stand up, grabbing her and lifting her from the ground. She’s able to shove her forearm into your stomach, causing you to keel over.
Torrie really did get up. She grabs your hair and slams you down to the mat. It’s her turn to be in charge and she’s going to try and lay down the law.
She squishes your face closer to the canvas and uses your hair to roughly scrub it across. “You’re horrible!” She screamed. “Do you see what I have to do to you!? This is your fault!”
Torrie finally lets go of you so you can breathe for a second. The referee is chewing her out for this move, so she starts to argue with him. You slowly recover off of the ground, and since you don’t think you have enough time to get up, you use your foot in order to kick her in the shin.
She crashes down immediately, holding onto her shin.
While she’s down, you turn your head towards the front, Raven’s watching intently. Once you start to fully stand up, you can see him duck down for some reason.
But it wasn’t his fault. He was completely blindsided by someone with multi-colored hair. This person knocks him to the ground and starts laying into him with punches.
Oh no. No, no, no…
This can’t be happening.
‘Jeff Hardy has just attacked Raven!’ JR exclaimed. ‘What is going on here?!’
You don’t even know what to do. You grip the ropes, just about to abandon the match, but before you know it, Torrie’s had taken advantage. She rolls you up and then….one, two, three. You kicked out far too late.
No fucking way.
Did that really just happen?! Torrie can’t believe that happened either. Before she starts to celebrate her victory, you immediately tackle her to the ground to try and choke her out.
The referee has to pull you off of her, but you couldn’t care less. You’ll handle her right after you try and break up the fight THAT WAS STILL HAPPENING AT THE OUTSIDE OF THE RING.
You slide out of the ring in and run over towards them, doing your best to pull off the assailant to no avail.
“STOP IT! Stop!” You scream. You’re doing your best to get in between them….to no avail. Raven’s able to get up off the floor and starts punching Jeff back. They’re squabbling and you’re panicking.
This isn’t supposed to happen. Why did Jeff do that?! He didn’t even give poor Raven a chance to fight! At least he’s getting his hits in now..
Some referees have to come from the back and attempt to pull the men away from each other.
The rowdy crowd is looking on, cheering at the sight. One of the referees have to tell you to back away so you don’t get hit, so you do.
Aaaand you’re bleeding.
Oops, you may be mistaken. You’re pretty sure one of them is bleeding, but you can’t tell who. With the referees crowding around them, it’s hard to discern who it was. All you can see is some blood smeared on your arm and hand.
You simply walk away and reach under the ring to yank out a kendo stick. Torrie’s still sputtering in the ring, and with most of the referee’s attention on settling the two men, you come back into the ring for a little bit extra.
You absolutely fucking hated how this finished! This was growing increasingly stressful, so you had to deploy the cure.
Violence!
For now, you toss the kendo stick to the side. You get down and pull Torrie’s arm right under your leg, getting into position for a Yes Lock. But it’s not any old submission.
You take the kendo stick and pull it under her neck. She flails under you, so you try and lighten the hold just a little bit so she wouldn’t be too hurt later. You try to be nice, sometimes.
There’s so much going on inside and outside of the ring, no one even knows where to focus.
One of the referee’s finally notice what you’re doing. “Hey! HEY!!!” He yells, coming back in. He forces you to release your hold on Torrie and she continues to cough, trying to gasp for more air.
….You definitely lied. You’re not excited for tonight at all.
You’re not in a good mood anymore.

It took a while for the N64 to get its first wrestling game, although it ended up getting a LOT after this one. It’s quite difficult to judge these properly as WWF No Mercy essentially invalidated all the other wrestling games on the console and set the standard going forward.

For the first on the N64, it does a good job. The gameplay works well enough, although putting the special moves on the control stick is a very odd move (you move around with the D-pad). You punch, kick and grapple. That said, individual matches do go on for far too long – upwards of 20 minutes.

But there’s not much to the game. There aren’t that many wrestlers and there are just a few basic modes, the first of which is a 5v5 where they duke it out one at a time. If one wrestler wins, they fight the opponent’s next.
There’s none of the speed or agility of your average beat-’em-up. Rather, the game chugs along at the same leisurely pace throughout, with every wrestler moving at the same speed (and all appearing to skate around).
