Lover's eye
You know those fancy little painted eye lockets from Victorian England? I feel like N would totally give the detective one of those.

I really hope we learn more about Rook in book 4. What type of man he was, how he and Rebecca met and what actually happened to him.
It's been mentioned/hinted at a few times that Rook was the more family-orientated parent and that Rebecca didn't really know what to do, probably even more so once he died and she was left with the detective. Which could have resulted her in focusing on work more and more. (That's the case for Rebecca Michaelis and my detective, at least!)
Tumblr media
I really love the family dynamic created through the books between Rebecca and the detective, especially due to the strain the absence could have caused if you choose to go down that path. But I do wish that Rebecca would finally open up a bit more about Rook for longer than she has previously.
Especially since, from what we have seen about him so far, I can't help but think of an AU where it was Rook left to raise the detective instead:
Would the detective have a different life if that were the case? Would they have a better parental relationship or would things continue to happen the way they have done with Rebecca? Would Rook be more open and slowly introduce the detective to that world or would they be kept hidden from it until they can't any longer?
Would the detective even be the detective if he were alive and still in the position and if not, would they even meet UB in the first place since they are Rebecca's unit?

i’m not super involved in the wayhaven fandom, so i don’t know if people think this is a thing or not and i’m just super far behind the times in thinking of it myself lmao 😅
but... rebecca. do we think she used the same memory-locking/erasure that m went through to wipe her memories of what happened to rook? either because she considered herself culpable and couldn’t bear the guilt, or just wanted to brunt the pain of losing him, or maybe even had it happen unknowingly and/or against her will -- like what if the agency had her memories wiped to keep her loyal?
now that we know she used to be part of the chamber, so clearly had the clearance and was lying about it... sera said it was “intentional on rebecca’s part,” but... what if she actually just doesn’t remember, or had her memories about it altered? or does that not hold up at all and i’m just in conspiracy mode? 🤔

i have not played other routes w intimate scenes but i will say F’s are so character-less i’m actually shocked and it doesnt SOUND like N and M’s are like that at all :( F’s route in general in book 3 is underwhelming to say the least. You can make a perky funny romance without the character lacking dimension (like i dont NEED the M or A or triangle angst), and I really thought by the third book in the series we’d get…something? but i fear it’s actually going backward, after playing through the first two books the 3rd is just F: Quips and Goofs Edition vs what i ASSUMED were setups in the first two (regarding their aversion to difficult emotions and abandonment issues) which get. Such scant mentions here they don’t feel relevant, especially because they neither impact F OR the detective.
All of the conflict, development, or cracks is starting to show with the other three vamps wrt their relationships and then poor F feels like an afterthought. right down to the romance scenes being so generic if you took their name out of it I wouldnt be able to tell you who it is. Even N can get into some shit w the detective in book 3 but F’s internal monologue and most scenes (save for the dinner with Verda) feels so half assed it’s disheartening. Idk if it’s just me, idk if I just happened to play it a way where it came across as such but I’m genuinely curious as to what other scant F-mancers out there think of them in this book. This is a critique of the writing, not my baby F themselves. In the romance route at least F is exactly the same as they were in book one, if not regressed. We got some backstory lore but thats not the same as character development.

DOUGLAS HAS BEEN (OR IS YET TO BE???) TURNED????
Yeah, hehe! :D
If you end up on Doug's story branch, then at the end of Book Three (if you don't choose to go with Rebecca), then Douglas gets turned into a supernatural.
Definitely an interesting direction for Douglas' character arc to go in, especially as when I first came up with Douglas' character many, many years ago in the original novel, he was just the smallest side character, lol!
Thank you so much for the ask! :)

SPOILERS FOR BOOK 3 TWC! i love this scene bc i headcanoned this was the moment my patient genuine sweet detective felt extra tired of his angsty BS. usually she would just let this slide and focus on the task at hand owo
i’m going to be away from my workstation for a while so i won’t have the time to color the rest. but thought it was ok enough to share anyway!

Fellow F-Mancer here! I definitely don’t disagree with your feelings about Book 3. The intimate scene was just kind of a “oh that happened I guess.” It didn’t feel special to F! And if rough because F does shine in their BFF routes!
But if I might offer some optimism: we still have more books to come. Book 3 might feel underwhelming for F now but actually be setting up something huge for Book 4 or 5. We don’t have the whole picture so I’m hoping there’s some really cool stuff coming that we just don’t see yet… (my personal out there hope: F’s mom being alive and shows up somehow)
EXACTLY. I haven’t played their friendship route but I’ll likely try it soon and see if it’s got more going on.
And that’s very true! I think my concern is that the other vampires ARE getting a lot of set up in the series so far, and if/when we do finally get some real meaty content with F …will it be too late, or feel out of left field, since I Really thought three books in would be a good time for some deeper development to at least be HINTED at (look at what M is going through in their romance rn for instance, it’s great)
Or at the very least will book three end up being a slog for F-routers in the future while doing a play through of the whole thing? 🤔 I still like the series but it’s disheartening to be waiting three years for an installment and it feels like your main romance got left on the cutting room floor.
