CPN : Same phone case timeline 🗓️📱
just when i thought the posts i’m making on here to archive all the candies couldn’t get any weirder, this happens. lol. i have to say that the cpn about the phone case has really become more popular ( and notorious ) than i thought it would be. it just seemed so common to have the same plain-looking case as someone — but if you really look at the variables, you’ll notice that some things don’t add up.
Tumblr media
this is all speculation/interpretation/opinion in the pov of a bxg. the timeline is real tho.
I decided to make this because it seems like what we know about it’s first appearance is all wrong. initially, this was noticed w/ ZZ @ Weibo TV & Movie awards then we kept our eye on it. However, recent “developments” show that it was earlier than that.
• A fan found a photo ( i won’t repost here cause it was sneakily taken at a public place ) of Bobo back in 6/2022 as well as 8/2022 where he was already using that phone case with a card slot. his phone case design in recent years ( late 21-23 ) has really been difficult to place since he rarely ( never ) takes mirror selfies anymore or even takes his phone out in public.
I found this additional timeline explanation that says WYB’s assistant during CQL was also using a phone card case at that time. We don’t know the connection or if he is still in close contact with WYB and they used the same one. In ZZ’s vlog from 8/22, he was only using a clear case. He changed his phone in September so that’s when the new phone card case was bought, and he got one ( allegedly ) for WYB so they can really match. The one he used in 6/22 was him ( wyb ) starting the “trend” of the phone card case and ZZ was not onboard yet.
• 9/2022 to early 10/22, I’m using this month here cause in 2/2023 we got the SBMS behind the scenes video. There is a scene there where ZZ shows something on his phone to BBH, he was using the phone case already. We just didn’t know. Filming for this drama was around late september so i’ll add it to the timeline.
• 11/29/2022 ZZ was spotted with the phone case during the WB TV & Movie night. At the time, we were just clowning that he was texting WYB 😂
Tumblr media
• 11/30/22 WYB was photographed on his way to Wuzhen and he had his phone out for a moment. We caught what his phone case looks like and that it’s the same as ZZ’s.
• 12/6/22 GG was photographed at the airport and he had his phone in the open, which is unusual. like bobo, he doesn’t take it out especially at the airport, but it was like he was confirming something to those of us who pay attention.
Tumblr media
• 1/22/23 WYB attends a roadshow for Wuming’s release and fans saw him seated very close to the screen and alone. You can see he had his phone on his lap and it looks like the phone card case. but again, it wasn’t clear. the cinema was dark. then he didn’t take it out again.
• After this, we see the phone case on ZZ’s side a couple or times especially in video out takes shared by XZS for his photoshoots + work related filming. At this point, it was already identified with him especially by his fans and those who follow him.
• 4/27 Gucci Cosmos, ZZ shares a photo where his phone case is visible and it doesn’t look like the same one. This seems like an outlier. I’m not sure if he used it to match his outfit ( which is gray ) Or if this is even his personal phone ( but i think it is ). We will have to wait and see for future glimpses of his phone to see if he changes back. I’m seeing this as more of an aesthetic switch to match the event.
Tumblr media
• 5/11/23 WYB shares photos on IG and we finally get a clear picture of his phone case and that it is what we think it is.
Tumblr media
• 5/12 All the talk started about Bobo deleting the photo and cpfs linking it to being about the couple phone case.
• 5/13 The topic of the same phone case went on HS and fans from all sides came out to give their explanation.
• 5/19/23 after all the “controversy” XZ studio still includes a clear photo of the phone case for their Euro Trip photos 📷 Showing that they don’t give af about all the issue surrounding it.
• 5/20 HZT ( the actor who plays LQR ) posts a douyin of the same style phone case and it’s — so suspicious 👁️👄👁️
AND WELL THE SAGA CONTINUES. I think this is not the last time we will see it or maybe it will morph into something more.
A few clowning points:
• You may see some discussion about wfs on wyb’s side knowing about this as early as june of last year but they never said anything. They probably saw us speculating about wyb’s phone case when they already know the truth. lol. I can’t say for sure that they are purposely hiding something, maybe they didn’t think it was important. but i can see the ones who keep an eye out on xz on their side probably just chose to keep quiet. turns out, cpfs are the last to know about candies. 😂😂😂😂
• @rainbowsky pointed out here how this type of case may not be typically used in CHN. All because the card slot is almost useless. The way they pay is by their phone. They don’t need a train ticket or whatever for transportation too cause they have private vehicles. It’s like they both or maybe one of them went to the apple store ( in person or online ) and they saw that — decided to get a couple case. I’m thinking this is ZZ. My CPN is this is connected to WYB’s sudden use of an apple watch. The watch is good to keep track of your health so maybe ZZ gave it to him and while he was there “shopping” decided to get a phone case too for them to match. just boyfriend things. ssssshhhhhh 🤫
• THIS IS NOT THEIR USUAL TYPE OF phone case. If you’ve been following them for some time or have seen their photos with their phones out, they usually go for the ones with a design on them. of course, the style is more on their preference. So this sleek and almost simple type of iphone case appears to be a compromise for both.
but like, the “simple” or low key design has been more ZZ’s style. that’s why cpn is he bought it for them.
examples below ⬇️⬇️⬇️
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
• In the past, they usually changed their phone case for a specific month or season. That’s why I think ZZ’s “change” last April was only for the event ( but i could be wrong ). But for the both of them, using the same one for one year ( guessing here but most likely this is how long ) is unusual. You could say they are too busy / the case is good so why change it / they don’t wanna use graphic cases anymore/ etc etc the list of reasoning can go on and on. but you can’t deny that it’s out of the ordinary.
I think it really helps laying things out like this so we can see what is happening behind the scenes. what are the outliers. what other possibilities are there. what fits or not. usually candies are simple and clear, but some are not and needs more time to take apart and make sense of. whether you believe this or not and take it as candy is all up to you. 🫶🏼
It’s another YIZHAN Mystery. 🕵️‍♀️
-END.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
February 29, 2024
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
MAR 1, 2024
Today’s story is that in the negotiations to fund the government and pass the national supplemental security bill, MAGA Republicans appear to be losing ground. Biden appears to be trying to weaken them further by making it clear it is Republicans, not Democrats, who are preventing new, strict border security legislation.
The first of two continuing resolutions to fund the government for fiscal year 2024 will expire tomorrow. Fiscal year 2024 began on October 1, 2023, and Congress agreed to a topline budget, but it has been unable to fund the necessary appropriations because MAGA Republicans have insisted on having their extreme demands met in those measures. In this struggle, former president Trump has urged his loyalists not to give way, telling them in September 2023: “UNLESS YOU GET EVERYTHING, SHUT IT DOWN!”
But a poll from last September showed that 75% of Americans oppose using brinksmanship over a government shutdown to bargain for partisan gain.
After kicking the can down the road by passing three previous continuing resolutions, House Republicans a week ago expected a shutdown. But today they backed off. The House passed a short-term continuing resolution that pushes back the dates on which the two continuing resolutions expire, from March 1 and March 8 to March 8 and March 22. The vote was 320 to 99 in the House, with 113 Republicans joining 207 Democrats to pass the measure. Ninety-seven Republicans opposed the bill, as did two Democrats who were protesting the lack of aid to Ukraine.
Tonight, the Senate approved the continuing resolution by a vote of 77 to 13. President Joe Biden is expected to sign it tomorrow. “What we have done today has overcome the opposition of the MAGA hard right and gives us a formula for completing the appropriations process in a way that does not shut the government down and capitulate to extremists,” Senate majority leader Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) said.
Trump opposes helping Ukraine in its fight to resist Russia’s invasion, and under his orders, MAGA Republicans have also stalled the national security supplemental bill, which contains Ukrainian aid, as well as aid to Israel, the Indo-Pacific, and humanitarian aid to Gaza. The measure passed the Senate on February 13 by a strong bipartisan vote of 70 to 29, and is expected to pass the House if Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) takes it up, but so far, he has refused.
Today, Representative Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) told reporters that “several” House Republicans are willing to sign a discharge petition to force Speaker Johnson to bring a national security supplemental measure to the floor for a vote. A simple majority can force a vote on a bill through a discharge petition, but such a measure is rare because it undermines the House speaker. With Johnson refusing to take up the Senate measure, Fitzpatrick and his colleague Representative Jared Golden (D-ME) have prepared their own pared-down aid measure. Fitzpatrick told CNN’s Jake Tapper Tuesday that “[w]e are trying to add an additional pressure point on something that has to happen.”
Speakers from the parliaments of 23 nations wrote to Johnson yesterday and urged him to take up the Senate measure, saying that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has “challenged the entire democratic world, jeopardizing the security in the whole European and Euro-Atlantic area,” and that “the world is rapidly moving towards the destruction of the sustainable world order.”
On Tuesday, Johnson met with President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Senate majority leader Schumer, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) to discuss the importance of funding the government and passing the national security supplemental bill. There, he was the odd man out as the other five pressed upon him how crucial funding for Ukraine is for U.S. national security.
Yesterday, Johnson told Fox News Channel personality Sean Hannity that the leaders told him he was “on an island by myself, and it was me versus everyone else in the room.” He went on: “What the liberal media doesn’t understand, Sean, is that if you’re here in Washington and you’re described as a leader that’s on an island by themselves, it probably means you’re standing with the American people.”
But an AP-NORC poll released today shows that it is not Johnson but the others at that meeting who are standing with the American people: 74% of Americans, including 62% of Republicans, support U.S. aid to Ukraine’s military.
The struggle between Biden and Trump for control over U.S. politics played out starkly today as both were in Texas to talk about immigration. Both say the influx of migrants at the southern border of the United States needs to be better managed. But Trump blames Biden for what he compares to a war in which an “invasion” of criminal “fighting-age men” are pouring over the border. (NBC News noted that “there is no evidence of a migrant-driven crime wave in the United States” and that, in fact, their review of crime data ”shows overall crime levels dropping in those cities that have received the most migrants.”)
Trump promises he would solve immigration issues instantly with executive orders, although his orders during his term faced legal challenges.
In contrast to Trump’s promise to dictate a solution, Biden emphasized that the government should work for the people. In Texas, he noted that the federal government has rushed emergency personnel and funds to the state to combat the deadly wildfires there that have burned more than a million acres, and he urged Congress to pass a law to address border issues, as he has asked it to since he took office.
Such a measure is popular, and earlier this month, Trump undermined a bill that was tilted so far to the right that it drew the support of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Wall Street Journal editorial board, and the U.S. Border Patrol union. Senators from both parties had spent four months hammering the bill out at the insistence of House Republicans, who then killed it when Trump, apparently hoping to keep the issue open for his campaign, told them to.
Today, Biden urged Congress to pass the $20.2 billion bipartisan border bill that would, he said, give border patrol officers the resources they need: 1,500 more border agents, 100 cutting-edge machines to detect and stop illegal fentanyl, 100 additional immigration judges to deal with the backlog of cases, 4,300 more asylum officers, more immigrant visas, and emergency authority for the president to shut the border when it becomes overwhelmed.
Biden spoke directly to Trump: “Instead of playing politics with the issue, instead of telling members of Congress to block this legislation, join me, or I'll join you, in telling the Congress to pass this bipartisan border security bill. We can do it together…. Instead of playing politics with the issue, why don't we just get together and get it done. Let’s remember who the heck we work for. We work for the American people, not the Democratic Party or the Republican Party. We work for the American people.”
Trump may not share that perspective. Last night, Maggie Haberman and Andrew Higgins of the New York Times reported that Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán, who has undermined democracy in Hungary, will visit Trump at Mar-a-Lago next week as Trump scrambles to find the more than half a billion dollars he needs to pay the fines and penalties courts have ordered. “We cannot interfere in other countries’ elections,” Orbán said last week, “but we would very much like to see President Donald Trump return to the White House.”

Nouveau Musée National de Monaco du vendredi 17 juin au dimanche 13 novembre 2022
From well-known portraits of Monaco’s “beautiful people” to rarely seen landscapes, this collection of images documents two decades of Helmut Newton’s love affair with the sun-kissed world of the French Riviera.  Helmut Newton was in his sixties and already a well-established photographer when he and his wife moved to the French Riviera. At an age when many people would consider retirement, Newton instead plunged headfirst into one of the most prolific and liberating stages of his career.  The city of Monaco was the perfect backdrop for his fashion photography, and it also provided him with a wealth of subjects for his famous portraits, including the stars of the Ballet de Monte-Carlo and the Princely Family. And it was in Monaco that Newton finally tried his hand at landscapes.  While this volume focuses primarily on the years 1981 to 2004, it also looks at Newton’s historic links with the Côte d’Azur and the area around Bordighera, Italy. There are essays by a range of experts in photography, film, and art and three interviews, including one with Paloma Picasso.  In these remarkable photographs readers will discover the French Riviera through Newton’s fascinated, slightly ironic lens: a way of life characterized by ease and elegance; a world dominated by appearance and superficiality; and a veritable living theater, in which he was both actor and privileged member of the audience.

hi! i want to buy smth from you at one point. is there like an etsy or shipping-related issue as to why you don't do sales w ppl in germany?
Germany introduced a new packing rule which punishes small business owners like me. If I want to ship to Germany I need to buy a license and pay for shipping material and renew it every year. Price is also per kg. I never got many sales from Germany so it would have meant a loss for me... maybe I will look into getting one for 2024. Selling to Germany without the license could end up with me having to pay a 200k Euros fine, which is ridiculous as fuck but alas...
I can kinda avoid it atm by making private sales and mark it as gift or ship it the next time I'm in Germany myself. I don't offer sales through etsy because Europeans pay taxes if you buy something through them (which I would need to note down, which would automatically turn my order into a sale of goods and put me at risk) and I was told by many Germans they would most likely still have to pay taxes even if what they received was an actual gift.
Basically ever since EU removed the 22€ limit and made its citizens pay for every item you buy from non-EU states it has all been a whole ass mess, I feel...

15. bis 19. Mai 2023

Um this has gotten quite long but its just me giving my bad biased uncultured opinion on some of the 22/23 (home) kits :3
1/2
LIVERPOOL FC:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Design: 7/10
i kinda like it in general :) if only they hadnt put the ugly net pattern everywhere?
also i adore the little YNWA pattern on the sleeve!! wish it was featured more
I also also feel like the sponsor/ crest and logo are a bit too low?? i would have put them up a couple of centimeters
this kit looks very comfortable however so i wont bully the uninnovative design too much
Cut: 6/10
hm at first i was sceptical about the cut but its alright....its a tad bit boring though?
i dont understand the uhm seam that goes from shoulder to shoulder? i feel like in rl it wouldnt look that good
dont like the boring collar,,,its nonexistent its not there like WHERE IS ITTT??
Colours: 8/10
oughhh i like the colours!! they kept it pretty simple with the a bit darker red, an even darker red and beige <3 nuthing to complain about
Overall: 7/10
its quite alright!!! i would have given the kit AN ACTUAL COLLAR. i also would have found more places to put the YNWA pattern on?
i also would have done a NORMAL cut. no mid chest seam bullshit.
FC BAYERN MÜNCHEN:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Design: 2/10
Ok... Fc bayern... Babe...tell me who at adidas thought it was a good idea to take the euro kit, invert the colours and make it red instead of black.... WHO is meant to enjoy this??? Like with good lighting it looks alright yeah? But its SO UGLY. The longsleeve....
Its literally a pyjama... I hate to make that joke but it truly does.. its so BRIGHT. Its so unfitting?? It isnt recognisable?? At all????
Cut: 6/10
I have no problems with the cut, i like the more basic adidas collar and sleeves (only on the short sleeved version though), i like that they actually thought about the telekom logo and put the black outline around it HOWEVER.
its also a bad design choice because theres no other black part in the kit? Usually a kit features the same few colours that repeat throughout but the black is just an outlier?
Also think it is a bit boring....so many kits this season have some retro collars or sth but bayern said no <3 lets NOT.
She also looks very comfortable BUT that wont save her.
Colours: 5/10
They changed back to the bright red which is just basic and annoying to look at. i dont understand why they chose this insanely bright red w white??
Overall: 4/10
Bayern do BETTER. Theyre in a position where adidas actually kinda cares about your kit designs and makes them individual. USE UR CHANCE. Last seasons kits were so cool?? And stylish?? Jesus christ what a let down....
uhmmm if i had designed it i would have picked dark red, red and white as the colours as in the home kit should have combined dark red with red (like last season) maybe sth simple like dark red sides w a dark red collar and sleeve ends yeah? white details if needed. The rest is a normal red
For the away kit i would have inverted it (so white base, dark red collars/side stripes and red details in needed
Note: i would have (considering the whole retro vibe adidas is doing this season) gone for a blue and red look however the club has stated in 2018 that they will only use the club colours (white and red) from now on
REAL MADRID:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Design: 6/10
Alright its not THAT bad ok? Its recognisable enough, i have an absolute SWEETSPOT for purple kits... HOWEVER its just a bit boring yeah?? Nothing special... Really??
Going by the picture they have posted however it seems like this may be the first white kit in years that isnt see-through? Not sure though... (ill grade it like it isnt see-through)
ALSO. dont act like i didnt see that little real madrid emblem pattern on the kit. For WHY. ITS SO LIGHT YOU CAN BARELY SEE IT ANYWAYS. THE BADGE IS ALREADY ON THE CHEST.
Cut: 5/10
I HATE THE CUT. Now let me tell you WHY: the COLLAR. You can already see in the picture above that the ONE BUTTON was a bad idea... Like for people who fill these out it wont be a problem but it will look SO bad on those who dont... The folds jesus christ...
it looks so tiny and ill fitting because its WHITE on WHITE
That combined with the shoulders? Idk how they managed to do this but they are both too wide and also too narrow? It just looks like it wouldnt sit on your shoulders very nicely?
Colours: 6/10
Shes white... We get that... Shes PURPLE... Thats slaying.... HOWEVER. I dont like the colour distribution on the collar. They didnt make the same mistake as bayern because they integrated all 3 colours in the kit BUT i dont dont like that the purple and black stripes on the collar are the same size... One should be bigger than the other and i mean like more than 50% bigger
Overall: 6/10
DO SOMETHIBG MORE FUN REAL!!! last seasons blue yellow and white ones were GORGEOUS.
I would have kept the purple and white the same BUT i would have made the purple stripe on the collar BIGGER
ALSO!! i would have exchanged black with a little bit of a darker purple (a little little bit more reddish too) and the actual purple with a nice warm (almost orange) yellow <3
AND. i would have gotten rid of the like lightly printed on emblem on there....is so unnecessary
ARSENAL FC:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Design: 8/10
its actually so pretty.....like i dont understand arsenal ONLY produces bangers.... ITS UNFAIIRRR
now the little pattern on the collar?? ADORE.
the sleeves being red on the side thats facing the body??? ABSOLUTELY LOVE THAT. ALWAYS. (IT GETS THAT RETRO VIBE ACTUALLY ACROSS.)
APROPOS COLLAR: THEY MANAGED TO GET THE SIZE RIGHT!!! BECAUSE ITS WHITE ON RED <333 CONTRAST MY BIGGEST LOVE (ik its the same size as the madrid kit but consider this: visually it doesnt look like that)
it also looks incredibly comfortable because theres very little seams (except on the shoulders)
Cut: 7/10
hm nothing to complain about EXCEPT the shoulders... because it looks like they wouldnt sit well on different builds? like theyd crease up on some peoples shoulders (MAINLY ME.) because of the hard adidas stripes it wouldnt just lay on your shoulders if that makes sense?????
Colour: 9/10
Literally nothing to complain about AT ALL. like you CANNOT go wrong with (dark...?) red and white....i LOVEE the colour distribution!!! they always manage to get the MOST out of only two colours!!! wonderful WONDERFUL
Overall: 8/10
I only complain about the shoulders like what do you want me to do...
if i were to change anything?? maybe id make the shoulders a bit wider, make the cloth of the adidas stripes softer...that is awl <3
UNRELEASED KITS:
FC BARCELONA:
Tumblr media
Overall: 5/10
I truly dont get it? What is you fucking obsession with your iconic colours BUT!! YOU NEED TO PUT A BUTT UGLY "MODERN" PATTERN ON IT!!!.... Girl please you already know people yearn for retro shirts... get rid of these procreate brush style patterns
Whats the big idea? Nobody likes this fake futuristic shit (also that third kit... Uhm babe you arent representing england at the wc are you?)
ALSO WHERE IS THE COLLAR. EW.?? NO COLLARRRR?? (nike im sueing you)
ASTON VILLA:
Tumblr media
Overall: 6,5/10
uhmmm il will IGNORE the DISGUSTING third kit because i think the first two are alright
i dont understand the dots and lines at the sides? uglayyy also the collar is uhm..... its questionable but ill allow it its alright. (looks comfortable but im not sure it would fit/look good on every body?
no problems with the colours good old claret and blue <3 (third kit...i wish you death....THE PATTERN UGHHHHH)

In our bedrooms, we take leave of our daily woes. Far from the bustle of the kitchen, the sociability of the living room or the indulgence of the dining room, this part of the home is reserved for intimacy, romance, and dreaming.
Bedtime: Inspirational Beds, Bedrooms and Boudoirs is an inspiring, visual journey into the sleepiest, yet most salacious, room of the house. Celia Forner whisks you through the bedrooms of queens and emperors, designers and decorators, today’s most exclusive hotels, and even the most evocative fictional boudoirs from stage and screen. Taking us from Marie Antoinette to the Maharaja of Indore; from Tony Duquette to Peter Marino; from Mae West and Peggy Guggenheim to Rudolph Nureyev; from Gone with the Wind to 2001: A Space Odyssey, Bedtime is a must have for anyone who dreams of sleeping like a king or queen.
Designers and clients alike will find fresh inspiration in this king-size source book, which shows astonishing breadth of vision in collating more beds and bedrooms than one could possibly dream of, and is an invaluable addition to any design collection.

English, s/on with dead-carrier. @0259z Yankee Doodle int fb news anchored by male (Alexis Stroke?) @0300z. Yemen’s Houthis will introduce military “surprises” in their Red Sea operations, the Iran-aligned group’s leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi said in a televised speech on Thursday. “Our military operations will continue and advance and we have surprises that our enemies will not expect at all,” al-Houthi said. At least 112 Palestinians seeking humanitarian aid were killed in Gaza City early Thursday and scores more were injured in what witnesses and Gazan health officials said was the result of Israeli fire. Israel disputed that, saying scores of people trampled each other and were run over by fleeing aid trucks. Gaza hospital officials initially reported an Israeli strike on the crowd at the al-Nabusi roundabout in the western part of Gaza City. Witnesses later said Israeli troops opened fire as people pulled flour and canned goods off aid trucks. Congress passed another short-term spending measure Thursday that would keep one set of federal agencies operating through March 8 and another set through March 22, avoiding a shutdown for parts of the federal government that would otherwise kick in Saturday. The bill now goes to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. Jack Teixeira, the Massachusetts Air National Guard member accused of leaking highly classified military documents on a social media platform, is expected to plead guilty in his federal case, according to court papers filed Thursday. Prosecutors asked the judge to schedule a change of plea hearing, but no other details were immediately available. The judge set the hearing for Monday in Boston's federal courthouse. California’s coveted coastal cliffs eroding in atmospheric rivers. While such storms are not uncommon to the West Coast, meteorologists say they are likely to become more extreme over the next century if planetary warming from fossil fuel-driven climate change continues at current rates. Over the years, California has built a lot of infrastructure along its coast, and plowed monetary investment into the idyllic and much sought-after real estate. There is a nuclear power plant right on the coast in San Onofre that is vulnerable to erosion and sea rise. The train line along the coast has been closed when landslides cover the tracks. The Dutch government has spent more than 166 million euros ($180 million) dealing with the aftermath of the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine in 2014, from repatriating victims' bodies to investigating and prosecuting some of those involved in the downing, according to an official report Thursday. The Boeing 777 flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down on July 17, 2014, using a Russian-made Buk missile fired from territory in eastern Ukraine controlled by separatist rebels. Alright, so this is my last Euro tour write-up, from the last show of Euro tour! I've had a lot of fun doing these jam write-ups over the last few weeks, which kind of surprised me at first, to be honest. Once I share my thoughts on a few of the jams from December's Goosemas run, I'll probably keep doing these, but do less of them (at least until the band starts touring again). Maybe I'll pick some favorites from earlier in 2023? Maybe I'll pick some favorites from shows I've personally attended? If anyone has a request, send it! I can't guarantee I'll get to it, but it would be fun to have audience participation.
Some relevant history: way, way back in the day, I had a Phish show review blog where my stated mission was to listen to and review every show of "Phish 3.0" (basically every show they've played since 2009). I wrote reviews in the blog from 2013 until 2018, and covered most shows up through the band's 2017 summer tour. It was a lot of listening and writing about one band. Maybe obviously in retrospect, what ended up happening was that the constant hyperfocus on Phish and essentially listening specifically to rate each show relative to the others ruined the music for me. I'd been seeing as many Phish shows as I could afford from 2009 through 2016, but by 2017 the music all sounded same-y to me (hint: it wasn't), and so I only saw one run apiece in 2017 and 2018 and then didn't really listen to anything from the band again until 2021. Nowadays, I'm enjoying the band that was my lodestar musical obsession for fifteen years of my life in moderation, but for a long time there I'd sabotaged my own enjoyment through hyperfixation and an insistence on comparing every song and show to every other song and show.
Long story short, for a guy who was born way too late too the Grateful Dead in their prime and slightly too late to see Phish in their prime, over the last four years Goose has become the band I was actually born at the right time for (if that makes sense). As such, I've always been really careful to not "burn out" on them by listening too much, by writing too much about them, and/or by endlessly comparing songs, shows, jams, etc. I was a little worried when I started writing these posts that I was taking the first step down a counterproductive path, but so far, like I said above, it's been fun. I've been trying to approach particular jams instead of entire shows or tours, and to write focused not on the question of "Is this good or not?" but instead on the question "What do I like about this?".
I think that might be a good change to make in areas of my life outside of my Goose fandom, too, but I digress...
Anyway, today's jam/video is a two-parter because that's how the person who posted this video on YouTube chose to do it (in case you didn't figure this out yet, I don't post the videos to YouTube myself, I just find them and write about them). It's a bit like the "The Whales"/"Butter Rum" Thekla post I already did, except this time around the jam comes out of the first song ("Hungersite" while it's the second (and third?) songs that are almost entirely composed rather than improvised.
So, "Hungersite" first. This tune is probably the closest thing Goose has had so far to a radio "hit." They even made a live-action, Office Space-themed video for it, like it's the 90s! It is a catchy-ass song, but it's also chock full of the weird, abstract lyrics and (post)modernist imagery that Rick likes to write so much (and that I like to hear so much).
"Hungersite" has been a jam vehicle for the band basically since it was introduced (2/26/22 first time played), but I feel like it started getting really out there frequently in 2023. The version from the Capitol Theater run in March was an early introduction to the (in my opinion) new tier of improvisation the band discovered this past year, and pretty much every version for the rest of the year that wasn't played at a festival show (fourteen in all!) was incredible in its own way.
I'd say this London version is actually one of my least favorite "Hungersite"s from this year, actually, and that's saying something considering how good it is. Maybe I'll cover some of the others some other time...
Now that I've done such a good job of selling the London "Hungersite," let's get into it!
While I won't wax poetically at length about the song proper here, I particularly love Jeff and Trevor's contributions to the composed parts. All the parts are well thought-out and it really feels like a great indie rock song that stands just fine on its own without a jam.
At the 3:45 mark, the song has a neat, built-in, very Phish-y guitar peak that I (and most people in the crowd on any given night) always look forward to, though now it's hard for me to hear it without thinking of Trey playing it at Radio City.
We return to the chorus one last time after this (love Peter on the organ here!), and then we get a reprise of the song's main riff at 5:25 that leads into the jam proper 5:55.
I might be hearing things here, but in this version it sounds like Rick changes the key of the jam right away, rather than staying in the song's key for any length of time. Regardless, the rhythm section drives things here initially, while it feels like Rick and Peter are both kind of circling each other, feeling things out.
Rick asserts himself a bit more starting at 7:30, and if you listen enough to actually hear Trevor (obligatory mix complaint!) you can hear him and Rick playing off each other here.
Right as things are starting (to me) to sound a little rote, Ben shifts up the beat to something more driving, and that pushes everyone to reconfigure a bit. Some tasteful shredding from Rick ensues. I love the blues riffing at 10:15 in particular.
Rick backs off at 11:05, and we quiet things down a bit. Peter jumping over to the clav over this driving beat is a perfect move, sending the whole jam into a much murkier space. I love how the lighting changes here to suit the sound, too.
The wall of sound that Peter is kicking up between his clav playing and his synths really starts to take center stage around 13:30. I feel like a lot of the jams I write about here feature Rick front and center (and, to a degree, that's because most of Goose's jams do feature him front and center), but I think this is a great example of how he can play rhythm and/or add effects to someone else taking the lead (Peter here, but Trevor too at other times). In fact, a lot of my favorite Goose jamming tends to have Rick in this "support" role, mostly because he's really good at it, but also because it usually means that they're heading somewhere weird and new.
Somewhere around 15:00, this jam turns into a full-band collaboration on a level that all of the best jams do, and then the shit that Rick starts playing at 16:00 just melts my brain and I die.
Okay, I'm being a little hyperbolic here, but this is what I often refer to in my setlist notes as "that baroque shit" and I am fully a sucker for it.
He returns to this riff a few more times (a la the Manchester "Thatch"), and the rest of the band rides the absolute groove they have going into the ground in the meantime. You know it's a good jam when the back-of-the-house camera is visibly shaking up and down.
Rick hits the riff one more time at 20:16 and then it's full steam ahead to an absolutely enormous peak. Unlike a lot of the other jams I've covered recently, "Hungersite" jams tend not to return to/reprise the song proper at the end, so we just crash to a triumphant halt at 21:10 and softly transition out of the noise and reverb into "Seekers On The Ridge Part One."
I don't want this post to get obnoxiously long, but I want to write a short thing about "Seekers." If you don't already know, Goose has a whole pile of songs that contribute to a larger mythology/legendarium (think Phish's Gamehenge, but less goofy). Of the ones I can think of off the top of my head, most of the songs that fit into this sub-oeuvre tend to be more prog-rock-style in their composition, and the lyrics vague, mysterious, and more than a little Joseph-Campbell-esque. I don't write about most of these tunes because, with the notable exception of "Elmeg The Wise" (which I'm sure I'll get to someday), they aren't typically songs that get jammed out. That said, "Seekers" is included in this video, and it's one of my favorite non-jammed things the band plays regularly, so I thought I'd share.
There are two "parts" to the song, and they have almost always been played back-to-back, though they've been separated on a few particularly memorable occasions. There's no long-form improvisation in either part, so everything you're hearing (except for the occasional, brief solo) is entirely composed. I don't have much else to say other than that if you've come this far in reading, you should give the rest of the video a listen!
I absolutely love the chorus to the first part. Peter's piano chords and Trevor's bassline just make it absolutely epic-sounding, especially in person. In fact, I'm tempted to say that Trevor is the MVP of the "Seekers" songs in general. I also never get sick of hearing the transition between the two parts (happens here at 27:30). Peter's Vibe tone at the beginning of the second part (similar to what he plays on "Red Bird") really makes it work.
Rick takes one solo during "Seekers," at in this version it's at 29:55. Sometimes this solo is kind of muted and sometimes he just rips it, presumably depending on his mood. This time, he chooses violence.
And that's all I'm writing about (for now, at least) from Euro tour. It feels like a nice, contemplative note to go out on. Next time, it's Goosemas: In Space!
