Boys Planet Eps 9-10 Recap: Switch
Tumblr media
Hello, lovies! As you may know, I already wrote a recap/master post for episode 9, and another one for episode 10. This recap focuses just on the stuff that’s relevant to team “Switch” -- so their rehearsal period in episode 9 as well as their rehearsal footage and performance in episode 10. But you’ll have to switch to the full post first, which is my cheesy way of saying to click read more! 🙂
The Trainees Here’s a list of the trainees in this group along with their rank as of episode 8 and their two previous missions:
Kim Tae Rae 7 / Back Door -K / Man in Love
Keita 8/ Kill This Love - G / Zoom
Park Hanbin 13/ Hot Sauce - K / Law
Yoon Jong Woo 15 / Back Door - K /Home
Na Kamden 20 / Back Door - G / Law
Zhang Shuai Bo 23 / Back Door - G / Feel Special
The First Rehearsal Segment
At 31:45 of episode 9, we visit with team Switch for four whole minutes!
They start by deciding who would get the killing part, and Yoon Jong Woo says he doesn’t want it because it’s all about confidence, and he has none. Also, I kind of get the feeling that he's a little over the whole thing. Can't blame him, but I hope he shakes that off.
But you know who does want the killing part? - the formerly blue haired Park Hanbin.
Surely, though, he won’t be able to do a good audition? He can’t learn the choreo that fast?
But he gets up and does the killing part for his team and does it flawlessly. Better than Kamden, who has had a week to prepare. TaeRae, comparing Hanbin’s dance to the video on the tablet, says, “how much did he practice?” (We’ll come back to that in a second….)
Tumblr media
What happened is this:
Park Hanbin looked at the numbers. He knew his initial team, En Garde, would almost certainly lose all or most of Ji Yun Seo, Lee Ye Dam, Oh Sung Min, and Hiroto. Hanbin knew that if Hiroto or one of the other three survived elimination, then his team would have one extra trainee. They’d probably vote out Hiroto, or whoever else survived, which would mean that Park Hanbin would be stuck with his 10 seconds of subvocal 3 as his only contribution to the team. There was a vanishingly slim chance that Kum Jun Heon or Park Gunwook was going to yield the killing part to him, or that his team would award it to him from merit. So, betting on the chance that at least one of Hiroto, YunSeo, YeDam, or Sungmin would make it, Hanbin learned the choreography to Switch, while also learning the choreography to En Garde, with the plan of volunteering to switch to Switch.
You guys, I told that story to my fella, and he was like, “that is some Rian Johnson, Knives Out, Poker Face level of machination and plot surprise,” and I was like, yeah. Accurate.
I don’t think that Park Hanbin liked Switch better the whole time or anything like that. He asked the Star Creators to put him in En Garde. But Hanbin wanted a Killing Part, and he was willing to work twice as hard as anyone else in order to get it.
Now, what about Kim TaeRae? I think that Hanbin and TaeRae talked about this ahead of time. Remember, they’re both with WakeOne. They auditioned together at the Star Level Test. TaeRae is a vocalist and probably relies on Hanbin to help him with choreo when needed, at the agency. Hanbin knows that TaeRae isn’t a hyper-social butterfly, nor is he hyper-audacious, pushing for the parts he wants. TaeRae somehow or another didn’t get main vocal in Backdoor. Like, what the fuck? So Hanbin knew that someone other than TaeRae was likely to end up with that juicy subvocal-1 part in Say My Name. Not great for TaeRae. But meanwhile, Hanbin also knew that TaeRae is much beloved by the Star Creators, and is an excellent singer and a decent dancer. Hanbin knew that he, Hanbin, would be able to teach anyone how to dance. He also knew that having TaeRae on his team will benefit both his team and TaeRae, because it’ll ensure that TaeRae gets a main vocal part and it’ll ensure that his team has at least one top-9 trainee and at least one trainee who can sing really well. It’s win/win/win for Hanbin, TaeRae, and their team. Also, having TaeRae on his team meant that he’d have one more chingu who would be sure to vote for him to have the killing part. And also also, since TaeRae and Hanbin are both at WakeOne, what’s good for one is good for the other, because they’re undoubtedly going to debut together eventually and their fame and future success is tied together.
Notice how TaeRae asked, “How much did he practice?” when Hanbin did the killing part -- not “how does he know this?” or “did he practice this?” TaeRae already KNEW that Hanbin had been practicing this. He was only surprised as to the extent of it. That’s further proof that they talked about this in advance.
I love this so much, and I just love Park Hanbin. That kid is the Jeon Soyeon of this batch of trainees. I mean, not necessarily in terms of song composition or whatnot, but in terms of brilliant strategy. Whether he debuts in Bepler or not, he’s going places.
Also, Na Kamden is just a sweet guy, isn’t he? Losing the killing part, he just says, well, Hanbin is really good. You’re good too, Kamden! This whole team is pretty strong, and this is the performance I’m actually looking forward to the most at this point.
Tumblr media
So here’s the part distribution -- wait, Keita is sub rapper 3? At first I thought that Keita must have been planning something, but as I watched more, I became less sure. Oh no...
Anyway, they start practicing, and the editing focuses on how TaeRae is having a little trouble learning the choreo. It's! Shocking! That a Main Vocal! Would have a little trouble! Learning choreo!!!!
Tumblr media
Even his hair won't cooperate. Don’t worry. He has Hanbin there to beat the steps into him!
Now, let’s skip to 30:00 in to Episode 10.  It’s D-Day and the boys come out on stage, all dressed in super bright colors.
Tumblr media
Key asks Hanbin about rehearsal, and we jump back to the team’s first meeting with the psychopath dance teacher. We’re reminded of how the team ended up together, and the dance teacher says that this is a good team, with several trainees who got a good result in the second challenge mission -- Hanbin came in first for Law, TaeRae came in first for Man in Love , JongWoo came in first for Home, and Keita came in first for Zoom.
But their dancing isn’t perfect, how dare they not be perfect after like 12 hours of rehearsal?
Especially TaeRae, who at some points didn’t dance at all but just sort of walked because he is a VOCAL and was going to be SINGING at that point. (1) Aren’t they allowed to adjust the choreo? Isn’t that part of the assignment? And (2) Let me get this straight, you fucking psychopath -- you want TaeRae to be dancing “powerfully” WHILE HITTING THE B ABOVE MIDDLE C? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? That’s several notes higher than that high F# they made the boys hit in Na BiNa. This is fucking falsetto territory, and you want him to dance “powerfully” AT THE SAME TIME? I hate these dance teachers so much sometimes. Human beings have human bodies. Jesus Christ. This is why singing in Kpop is going down the drain -- because they want people to dance “powerfully” while hitting B4.
The judge guy actually helps a bit (shocker, right?) by suggesting a modification for the choreo for TaeRae, but TaeRae doesn’t understand, so he makes him do it over and over like 19 times before getting off his lazy evil ass and showing him.
That night, Hanbin asks Keita why Keita didn’t go for a bigger rapping part…
Tumblr media
Hey, I know what you readers like.
… and Keita says, “I don’t have any energy left.” Keita interviews that he’s lost a lot of confidence. Oh no, Keita!! Oh NO!!!!
Back at rehearsal, Na Kamden, who is really a good guy, hands over leadership to Park Hanbin, because he thinks -- no, he KNOWS -- that Hanbin will do a better job. Everyone at home is like, “wait, Hanbin wasn’t already the leader?”
Tumblr media
They work on the dance, both the big picture and the details, sometimes over and over and over.
Then, like the fucking genius and sweetheart that Hanbin is, he gets Keita involved in fixing up the choreo, which does two things: (1) re-energizes Keita and (2) utilizes their resources! Yes.
Tumblr media
Just a little nudge from a friend seems to spur Keita back into action, and soon they’re all involved, all dancing.
40:30 The Performance
So we skip to D-day.
The judges are looking over the stage, which is set up to look a bit like an arcade, with bright day-glow colors. There’s an elevator door that is going up to the 9th floor -- referencing their desire to go up to the top9.
Tumblr media
Out in the audience, Wumuti is spoiling it to the audience that the concept of the performance is that the boys are stuck in a video game world. The fact that he knows that is an indication of how much of the performance was determined by the boys who were in each group before The Great Reshuffling. This implies that a lot of the stuff the various teams are doing might be the result of the hard work of trainees who aren’t in that group anymore. This is all really messed up, MNET.
Tumblr media
And the boys come out on stage to perform. It’s time!
My Take:
I know I’ll be in the minority here, but I actually like this song. I know, I know. But listen to the studio recording of it and maybe it'll grow on you. It's like a weird NCT song mated with a Black Pink song and had a child that mostly took after its father. But I'm fine with that. I also really liked the dance practice. I feel like I can focus more on how good their dancing is -- especially Yoon JongWoo, who is wearing white here, and seems to be trying his best to remind us that he would have been fucking fantastic in Over Me. They look like they’re having fun, like I just sort of want to jump up and join them dancing. They just have good chemistry and seem like friends. It’s one of those things that makes Twice so fun to watch, is the feeling that you’re watching a group of friends having fun rather than a group of coworkers forced to work together.
As for the Stage Performance:
Tumblr media
Overall, they do a great job. I wish we saw more of Keita, and I wish the camera work and outfits let us more easily see their dancing, but it was a cute, fun, lively performance. I don't have a ton to say about it, but I enjoyed it. Hanbin was the standout for me in the live performance -- though I'm telling you, Yoon Jongwoo stands out in the dance practice I linked above, and I think he would have stood out a lot live as well. Kamden, Keita, and Z-Bo did well too. I thought it was all really cute and cheerful.
TaeRae’s live vocals sounded great, because I love his vocal color, but still, they are just a bit shaky here and there. I hope he gets some more vocal training because he really could be great. Baekyhun wasn’t perfect when he debuted either and with more time, he has better learned how to control that powerful instrument he was born with. TaeRae needs to work on his mix, and his agility, but I know he can get there.
Afterwards, we find out that Zhang Shuai Bo got the lowest score, with an obviously punitive 402 points. You and I and he and all the other trainees know that this is the audience punishing Z-Bo for his “bad behavior” in earlier episodes, and I’m really sad for him, actually. I’ve come around to him -- yeah, it wasn’t cool to be passive aggressive with Solji, or to leave Woongki to sing the whole chorus by himself. Not cool, Z-Bo. But on further review of the situation, I think I was wrong to think that Z-Bo was being rude to Woongki in general -- Woongki has no animosity toward Z-Bo, so why should I? Plus, Z-Bo did a good job in his Switch performance and didn’t deserve such a low score. This was actually the first time that I really understood why some people are big fans of his -- he looked great on stage, actually! The dumb hair extensions really worked, the ugly pants looked good on him, I don’t know, he made it all work. But he seems resigned to his fate.
Tumblr media
Who came in first? Well, obviously Park Hanbin, with 741 points.
This is his third straight time coming in first in the mission.
Tumblr media
He’s slightly less amazed each time it happens.
He interviews that he’s starting to gain confidence. Well, I should hope so, lovey!
That brings us pretty much to the end of this recap, but I do want to say that if you like slightly weird kpop songs, give Switch another try, ok? Listen to the official studio audio and use headphones. It’s actually a pretty cool song. It’s ok if it’s not your thing, I totally respect that, but I think the live performances on this show are consistently hampered by a poor mix -- the vocals stand out like it’s karaoke, and that’s not great for your overall enjoyment of the song. So it really can’t hurt to just give the song another try when you can really hear all the cool touches on the low and high ends. I’ve come to really like it.
And that’s really the end!
See you in the next one, lovies! It's Say My Name .

THE SUNG JIN-WOO SHIP FEST IS HERE! ψ(`∇´)ψ
Tumblr media
Far faster than I expected because I was like "Eh it could wait for next year when the first manwha publication date rolls around. " and then said publication date was March 4 2018 when the series started and I was like... oh... yeah no the fandom will be dead by March of next year unless the Anime somehow comes out at that time.
So happy late Anniversary on the Webtoon!
If the Anime does manage to keep it alive then I'll do another one possibly, but shorter because I dont think all characters here will really be shown in the series.
So how will this event start?
For round 1, Two groups will appear each day over the course of 4 days, so you can vote on 2 different kinds of polls a day:
Said dates will be:
April 1st: [Igris vs Antares] and [Thomas Andre vs Yoo Jin-Ho]
April 2nd: [Goto Ryuji vs Radiru Esil] and [Kim Dokja vs Kang Tae-Shik]
April 3rd: [Woo Jin-Chul vs Baek Yoon-Ho] and [Liu Zhigang vs Lee Ju-Hee]
April 4th: [Cha Hae-In vs Choi Jong-In] and [Beru vs Sung Jin-Woo]
April 5th: The polls for Group 9 and Group 12 will be opened.
April 6th: The polls for Group 10 and Group 11 will be opened.
April 7th: The Polls for Semifinalist Group 13 and 14 will be opened!
April 8th: The polls for the Finalists of Group 15 will be opened.
April 9th: The finalist shall be married off (in a fic) to Sung Jin-Woo! — Edit: oh no, it has become a full on fanfiction.
Now you may be asking, wtf are Dokja and Jin Woo doing there? hey I found their tags on ao3, if anything considering the amount of kim x sung I found it shouldnt even be a question. As for jin woo, if he ends up winning then the aroace community ends up winning.
Edit: Ah man I was supposed to publish this on March 31st but my phone hates me. Anyways I'll just reblog it that day to keep yall updated when the time comes!

FINAL AUTHOR’S PICK for TOP 11 PRODUCE 101 Season 2
Well I think everyone here could make their own version/pick.
I'll make one. Pendi's Top 11 Picks for Produce 101 Season 2
1. Pledis Entertainment's Kim Jong Hyun - LEADER
Tumblr media
I think everyone of us agreed that he should be up in the top 11 taking the title of Leader. He experienced being a leader not just in produce 101, but even before when he was still an active member of NU'EST. He already taste the bitter-sweet of becoming an idol and how tough it is to become one of them and have to take his pride down and join the Produce 101. With the right mentality, and wisdom, there is no one in Produce 101 (all at least so far from what we saw) can touch Kim Jonghyun in term of his capability to be a leader. Otherwise he is so talented and a soulful rapper with a great dance ability too. So he is no doubt would be on top 11 with his recent rank as no 1 in rap and also no 1 in overall 2nd ranking announcement.
2. MMO Entertainment's Kang Daniel - JUST DO ANYTHING
Tumblr media
As beautiful his face and smile is. He is really the heart robber. He has great personality and motivation. I know he may got into some controversial act before, and cheating is really such an unhonorable act, with that being said, his personality and talent show that he is more than that. His attitude on the screen also shows that he is responsible and have a good fighting spirit. He is incredible with his dancing b-boy thing, and rapping and singing. He does improve a lot too, there are still room to grow even though he is already in Class A. With the right attitude and willing to learn & grow, he is a good example to be a great idol.
3. Fantagio's Ong Song Sung Woo - VISUAL
Tumblr media
He is already my favorite since the first episode, but until Kang Daniel came and shows his cuteness. LOL. But he is the man of dance and popping God. His jokes and Gag talents is also worth to count. With great visual and stage presence he is for me one of the best stage & expression experts. His dance skills also great and also his attitude and how he cares about others. He knows how to put himself in different kind of situation, for me he is a man with many talents, without trying to hard to show off and he got his way to impress people effortlessly. and he is more than ready to steal your heart right from the first impression to his long career ahead.
4. Brave Entertainment's Kim Samuel - DANCE
Tumblr media
I don't understand why people doesn't seem to agree that he deserve to be in the top 11. Even the trainers and national representative the Queen BoA fall in love with him and he is the first trainee to get into the A Class (based on the show). With his young age and how much he loves to dance and how much he spent his life practicing and dancing and how much he shows that he really want this is just.. beautiful. I really appreciate him to keep going and keep the fighting spirit. He is also respected by other trainees with his talents and I think he already shows improvement of his singing skills to.
5. Chun Entertainment's Kim Yong Guk - VOCAL
Tumblr media
He really shows his charm and how good his vocal is in the "If It Is You" performance. I think he is another good example on how much an underdog can do more and be success with his talent and not just his face. He has amazing vocal who can give different color to the group, I think he has so much potential and he doesn't have a problem with following the choreography, so he is up in top 5 for me.
6. Individual Trainee Kim Jae Hwan - VOCAL
Tumblr media
He is no dubbed the best vocal in P101 now. But he is more than his vocal. I his personality and charms he shows during the interview. I really like the way he talk and how he is honest and not so greedy for a position (maybe because he is already got the top posisition). But I think he is a must in term for vocal ability to be put in the top 11. And I am glad everyone have voted and put him in the top 11, for his talents, not just for a pretty boy with no talents.
7. CUBE Entertainment's Lai Guan Lin - RAP
Tumblr media
Talking about pretty boy without talent, the first time I saw him in the top 11 in the first voting result, and how he perform in front of the trainer for the first time, I basicly hate him for being in the top 11 with pretty face with no (I mean still in the making) talent & ability. But through out the show he shows how he is so passionate in rap and his ability to write and compose rap for his performance is amazing. He also know how to put great performance on stage, and I really appreciate him. It is not just a talent but his attitude also counts. I think everyone is working hard and everyone is also trying hard. But to put that hard work into something that is a great performance, I think he nailed it. Love his voice.
8. Brand New Music's Park Woo Jin - DANCE
Tumblr media
I am agreed with everything Jenny said. He is one of my favorite now after the get ugly episode. Just seeing him saying "I'm Doomed" is cute and how he reacts to the first time he saw the Get Ugly Team. But I think he has a solid talent for vocal and dance. He is the perfect example for not craving for high ranks, just do and give the best, and now he got in the top 11. Love him so much.
9. MAROO Entertainment's Park Ji Hoon - VISUAL
Tumblr media
Honestly I hope to see more talent from him, not just his visual. I think he has been to focus on how to act cute and come up with new trademark after the wink. But I know he is good tho, being in the Class B means he is great, and I think it is a safe choice to include him to the top 11 as we are talking about IDOLS, and boy like him with his charms and talents is one solid yes for an Idol.
10. C9 Entertainment's Bae JinYoung - VOCAL
Tumblr media
He is just charming in many ways. With that shy not-so-confident personality is cute but also shame. He should know how good he is, he is charming in many ways, his face, his voice, his dance, his one covered eye, his stage presence, his smile. I am glad that he shows more smile and prove he is great on stage in the recent My Little Girl performance. I am just so happy to watch his performance with his smile through out the performance, and we also haven't talk about his performance the ballad song downpour, his voice is just great. And I shipped him with Jihoon haha
11. Brand New Music's Lee Dae Hwi - VOCAL
Tumblr media
It hurts my heart that he has lesser screen time now, but he proves to have more to show and more ideas and more stage presence in every performance he is on. I think he has so many talent and potential. Hope he can become more confident than ever and overcome all the hates he got.
12. Pledis Entertainment's Hwang Minhyun - VISUAL.
Tumblr media
What just top 11? But I really can't leave this one. He is a great center to, I love all his stage presence, the smirk, the stares, the gaze. I think he is also have a solid vocal too. He is experienced and I think he deserve to be in the top 11. He has all the idol material, handsome, tall, sharp, and charming. He is price charming and he really completed the group as a whole. so please let him be in the top 11.
Other trainees that I hope to be in the top 11 is actually Lee Woo Jin, although I know he might be hard to fit in, but I love himm.. #13 - VOCAL
Tumblr media
Choi Min Ki & Dong Ho - it hurts my heart to hear they story and how they struggle to survive the idol life and music industry. As all the talents they got, they really are ready to get another chance to debut. But I think not in this group. I hope they both get success in the future. - #14 #15 VISUAL - VOCAL
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Takeda Kenta. He is great I think he got all and everything you need as an idol, but poorly we have less interaction with him. Less interview, less screen time. But he nailed all the performance and I love him so much. #16 - VOCAL
Tumblr media
Yoon Jae Sung he is incredible person and i just want to see him more and more. He is just hillarious. - #17 - I dont know what suitable position for him. Maybe Vocal or Responsible for GAG & VARIETY SHOW
Tumblr media
Jung Se Woon - I love his understanding and his vocal. He is great, and it is waste of talent if he doesnt debut soon.  #18 - VOCAL
Tumblr media
Lim Young Min & Kim Dong Hyun: Everyone from Brand New Music is ridiculously attractive to me. I think both of them have reputable capability as a rapper. Coming from the rap agency I think they have the quality looks and talent becoming an idol. #19 #20 - RAP
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ardor & Able trainees Noh Tae Hyun & Ha Sungwoon. Both are in Class A and super talented in dancing, but sadly they lack of screen time. I am happy for Taehyun he really still the spotlight in the position challenge. He did super great as the leader and choreographer for Shape of You, and he is just the best dancer in P101 for me. Next Ha Sungwoon who recently hopelessly and relentlessly trying hard to be get notice and to keep being in the competition. I think he has a great personality, and work ethic. #21 & #22 DANCE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NOTABLE MENTION:
LEE EUI WONG
AHN HYEONG SEOB
I dont know how they survive, for me their stage is average, but I think if you just be positive, and smile, and hard working enough, you’ll get notice.

Boys Planet Dual Position Battle, final bits and thoughts
Tumblr media
This recap will cover the final point reveals from the end of episode 7, as well as my final thoughts on the performances, including my own ranking and my analysis of MNET screentime allocation (I have the numbers, my loves).
Ranking announcement from the end of ep 6
Ok, here’s the ranking announcement from the end of episode 6. At this point, ep 8 is probably out, so this is out of date, but it’s still kind of interesting.
What I did is, I put the votes in my spreadsheet and found the average number of votes per trainee, which turned out to be 818,005. Then I had the spreadsheet calculate what percent of the average vote each person’s vote was. I think that helps put the number of votes in perspective. For example, international sweetheart Sung Hanbin’s 3.3 million votes represented 404% of the average (in other words, more than four times the average!). Meanwhile, poor Feel Special member Lee Donggun’s 81,739 votes represents about 10% of the average. Ouch.
What’s kind of interesting is that the top 15 were all 123% or more of the average or higher, while from 16 to 51, they were all 89% or lower of the average. It’s really a kind of haves and have-nots situation here.
People who were on a team that got the 100,000 benefit will be marked in blue. People who also got the 150,000 personal benefit will be marked in purple. Members of Zoom are marked in green (because I think they should have won.)
Sung Han Bin 3,307,923 404%
Han Yujin 2,909,883  356%

The Performances, the votes, and the rankings
In the last ten minutes or so of episode 7, they gather the trainees together in what might be the space where the audience usually stands, and torture them for a bit before finally revealing how many votes each team got. The winner within each category gets to perform on MNET countdown, each member gets 100,000 extra points, and the number one ranked team member on that team gets an extra 150,000 extra points.
Below, I list the songs, the audience votes they received, and the total screen time (adding up the episode 6 segment and the longer segment in episode 6 or 7). I list them in order of audience vote.
Vocal and Rap
Tomboy 860 votes, 27 minutes of screentime
Man in love 752 votes, 14.5 minutes of screentime
Limousine 719 votes, 13.5 minutes of screentime
Not Spring… 617 votes, 15 minutes of screentime
Winner: Tomboy; Zhang Hao gets the extra benefit
My thoughts:
My favorite is easily Limousine. I just loved this performance. Man in Love and Not Spring were about tied for me; each had one singer I quite enjoy and a few singers I don’t enjoy as much, and neither was a song that I exactly want to listen to over and over. I guess Tomboy actually came in last for me -- I would rather listen to any of the other three again than listen to Tomboy again. If I’m watching the performances, then I’d rather watch Limousine the most -- the performance is so emotional and so good -- but after, that I’d obviously choose to watch Man in Love to see TaeRae’s weird elf face that I like so much. So, putting all that together, my rank is:
Limousine
Man in Love
Not Spring…
Tomboy
Vocal and Dance
Love Killa 840 votes, 20.5 minutes minutes of screentime
Home 716 votes, 19 minutes of screentime
Feel Special 677 votes, 19 minutes of screentime
Butterfly 664 votes, 19 minutes of screentime
Winner: Love Killa; Kim Gyuvin gets the extra votes
My thoughts:
None of these performances exactly floated my boat. Love Killa was marred by sort of blank performances, in my opinion (though it’s cool with me if you liked it, hope I’m not yucking your yum). Home was lovely at times but marred by tight, strained vocals here and there. Feel Special was a mess, brightened by Woongki's cuteness and, honestly, Z-bo's cheerful performance (I'm not his biggest fan, but it's not like the audience vote came out of completely nowhere). And Butterfly just sort of fell apart, as beautiful as Chen Kuan Jui's dancing was. I don’t really want to watch any of these performances again, or listen to them either.
I tried thinking, ok, which one would I want to watch a fancam of? For example, if it was a fancam of Gyuvin from Love Killa vs. a fancam of Woongki from Feel Special vs. a fancam of Chen Kuan Jui from Butterfly vs. a fancam of Yoon Jong Woo from Home, which would I prefer? And I found myself just ranking them based on how much I like the song itself. So my ranking is meaningless. They're all tied for 2nd place. No one is in first. First place is held in reserve for how good Love Killa would have been if Yoon Jong Woo and/or Ricky had been in the group instead of Matthew and/or Seo Won. (Sorry! I love Seo Won and want to get fro-yo with him, but the song didn't really suit him.)
Rap and Dance
Law 846 votes, 19 minutes of screentime
Zoom 813 votes, 14 minutes  of screentime
Gang 798 votes, 12 minutes of screentime
Rush Hour 742 votes, 20.5 minutes of screentime
Winner: Law; Park Hanbin gets the extra votes
My thoughts:
This one is easy. Zoom. Zoom is my winner, hands down.
I can see why Law won. It was exciting and sexy and the boys looked good. I like all five of these trainees a lot and think they're great performers. But here’s the thing about Law -- it’s so fucking good the first few times you watch it, but then it gets kind of dull. It’s just all kind of monotonous dancing, you know? Yeah, there’s the stupid flag wave, but there’s nothing else to break it up.
In contrast, I keep noticing more cool things about Zoom as I watch it over and over. Like, the detail of how, when Wumuti does that kind of lifted leg butt wiggle on the line, “Wumumutiti!,”  the other trainees do a far scaled down version of the move, so that they’re supporting him but your eye still stays on Wumuti. It’s so subtle, but it’s cool because it controls where your focus is. I like being led around visually as I watch a dance -- tell me where I should look, choreography! Also, and I’m aware that this isn’t a unique take, but I love the way that the end of each rap section connects to the beginning of the next one. It makes it all feel like this is a real team, not just trainees who got stuck with each other. And I get so excited when I hear Wumuti’s awesome screech “Lights Camera Action baby!” and I know it’s Haruto’s dance break. YES!!!! Haruto, hit that breakdance pose and hold it for the camera click sound! It’s also so fun to watch Haruto’s fan cam and see him cheerfully clowning around with the other trainees when they were on the sidelines, during the performance. Ollie's cute rap, Hyunbeen saying "braggadocious," it's all so charming. They’re just all having so much fun. They’re IN the performance.
For the record, I assume it was Keita behind most of what’s good here. From what I’ve heard, he did basically everything for this song, and did a lot in previous challenges, too. Keita’s so good that even MNET’s editing can’t hide him. The judges won’t shut up about him and every single other trainee respects him. I’m so glad that the audience sees it too.
So, Law won over Zoom in part (in my opinion) because Law was sexier -- I have a whole other post about how I think that Zoom’s styling really brought them down. But it may also have been the scheduling. I saw someone talking (in the comments section of The Bias List) about how she was in the audience for the taping of these performances! Jealous. According to her, it took ages and ages, with lots of time in between performances. She says Zoom was the last performance and by then, it was midnight and the audience was exhausted by then. But the team started performing and it was so energetic and fun that everyone in the audience jumped into life again. This is all according to a person on the internet, I can’t substantiate it, but I don’t know, it kind of rings true.
It would be like MNET to try to sabotage Keita. Production had to know how good Zoom was and that it was likely to win, which would give 100,000 points to Ollie, Wumuti, Haruto, and Park Hyunbeen, and almost certainly would mean 250,000 points for Keita. If you look at the vote list above, you can see how much 100,000 points would mean for most members on this team. Yes this is just an interim vote and the final tally would be bigger overall, but even so, 100,000 points would help lock Haruto into safe territory, it would probably ensure Ollie's survival, and it would give Wumuti and Hyunbeen a fighting chance. 250,000 more votes might also move Keita up one space in the top 9. Scheduling Zoom last meant that it was an exhausted, cranky crowd who were voting, and that probably hurt it.
Anyway, enough about Zoom and Law. What about the other two groups?
As for Ggang, I think it was never going to appeal to me much because the song itself isn’t really my style. It’s not the trainees’ fault at all -- they did a decent job. But nothing about this performance specifically grabbed my attention to where I’d want to watch it over and over, and my little cousin Kum Jun Hyeon's shirt lift joke didn’t strike my fancy.
And of course, Rush Hour just drags my spirit down when I try to watch it. I don’t know if I’d feel differently if I didn’t know the back story, but I do know the backstory, and I can’t turn that part of my brain off.
So in the end, I guess my rank is:
Zoom
Zoom
Zoom
The other teams
Oh, and here’s my pie chart of the number of minutes devoted to each team. It’s kind of wild to see how little time was devoted to Zoom compared to Tomboy, isn’t it?
Tumblr media
As for the new songs that they’re going to be performing for the “Artist Battle”...
Oriental Pop “Switch” - sounds like a lost NCT Dream song
Sentimental Hip Hop “SuperCharger” - fast paced, kind of like Law
R&B Pop “Over Me” is sexy and charismatic
New-tro synth pop “Say My Name” is cute and lighthearted
Funk Pop “En garde” is sort of weirdly forgettable.
Based on my theory on how important sexiness is, I think most of them will want #3, whether it suits them or not. Dancer types like Wang Zi Hao will probably want #2, and cutie pies like Woongki will probably want #4. It’ll be fun to see who ends up in which group, and whether it was the song they wanted or not. I’ll especially be interested in where the fans put Matthew, because he keeps trying to do sexy concepts and I think he’d be much better suited for something more like #4.
Ok! We're finally done! And episode 8 is out. In fact, it's been out for a week if you knew where to look, and I did know where to look, but I have held back and didn't spoil myself.
Hope you're having a lovely day, hope that good things happen to you, and hope that all your pants are real sparkly. See you in the next one!

Boys Planet Episode 2, Recap Part 1
Tumblr media
In this watch-along-if-you-want-to recap, I’ll cover Episode 2 of the popular MNET show, complete with my usual screen grabs, gifs, helpful information, and snark. Let’s get to it!
A few quick notes -- ages given are international ages; ranks given are as of the end of ep 1/ beginning of ep 2; when I say "Space Council" I mean the other trainees watching the audition.
If you want to skip past the teaser, go to 1:14.
The boys have gathered in an auditorium to watch the first episode. And who is that coming in but Sunmi, who I would basically summarize as a performance artist at this point. Man, I love her.
Tumblr media
Haruto asks her where she’ll be sitting, and all the boys strongly suggest she sit by them. She puts a chair in the middle of the aisle, so she’s in between pretty-boy waacker Sung Hanbin and charming Canadian Seok Matthew, and she makes this face for some reason.
Tumblr media
And then they start playing the episode.
The boys enjoy each other’s trash talk, especially Yoon Jong Woo’s comment that G Group can’t win because “our roots are different.” (We’ll be seeing more of Jong Woo very shortly, trust). I feel like maybe this comment loses something in translation, because everyone reacts like it’s the quip of the century. Jong Woo is clearly a “personality” and is most likely here more to jumpstart a career on Youtube or something -- at least, that’s my take.
Everyone dies of laughter at the My House performances, and Sunmi can’t even stay in her seat. There’s also a lot of laughter at Team Hot’s performance (in the red leather jackets). Everyone’ shaving fun but I mean, oh boy, this is going to follow them around for the rest of their lives. I hope they can… deal with it.
Then the ranking is revealed.
Tumblr media
Someone had to be 93rd, and it’s 18-year-old Japanese trainee Riku. He interviews in Japanese that he was shocked and disappointed.
Tumblr media
Sung Han Bin, who performed Beautiful Beautiful at the end of last episode, is crowned first place winner, and Hui, who is sitting next to him, congratulates him sincerely. This would have bene several weeks into filming so Hui and Hanbin could have gotten close in the last few weeks, but maybe they really did know each other from Cube.  Hanbin is overjoyed at his ranking.
If you’re curious, according to my spreadsheet, the average ranking of the G-group trainees is 52.8, while the average ranking of the K-group trainees is 41.0, which is a pretty stark difference. Of the top 10, only two are G-group; of the top 20, only 7 are G-group. Of the bottom 20 (74 to 93), only 6 are K-group. This despite the fact that we saw more auditions from G-group trainees in episode 1. You’re going to get some of that when they weight the votes the way they do, but hey, it’s their country, it’s their show, it’s their prerogative.
More stuff about how to vote. Feel free to skip to 7:57 for the episode to really start.
Time for more auditions!
Team Redstart ENM
The four Redstart trainees come out, covered in a total of 37 star stickers. So, I guess they’re confident.
Tumblr media
I had never heard of Redstart ENM, so I looked them up. They don’t have any acts signed to them that I can find evidence of. This agency seems to exist only to promote these four trainees.
Choi Woo Jin is 18 years old and ranked 41 as of the beginning of this episode.
Hong Keon Hee is 18 years old and ranked 87 as of the beginning of this episode.
Kim Min Seoung is 19 years old and ranked 78 as of the beginning of this episode. He was on another show called Loud.
Kum Jun Hyeon is 19 years old and ranked 31 as of the beginning of this episode. (31)
The judges joke about how Kum Jun Hyeon’s loose baggy pants are very hiphop, and then they dive into their performance of Jessi’s Nunu Nana, which, as always, I watched the full cam of on Youtube before I exposed myself to MNET editing.
My take:
This was a brilliant choice of song. It was a huge hit -- 200 million views on Youtube -- and it was originally performed by a woman, so there’s that slight thrill of gender flipping it. It’s primarily a rap song, which suits their skillset, with rather minimal choreography that gave them almost a blank slate to embroider on to make this performance their own.
Their dancing and performance (as in, stage presence, charisma, that kind of thing) were both excellent, for all four of them. Watch their footwork, their angles, their consistent facial expressions even when they’re not vocalizing. They’re powerful yet controlled. And Min Seoung did that killer flip. (I love the loud appreciative wooooah from the Space Council you can hear clearly when he flips.) Both Min Seoung and Jun Hyeon had decent enough vocals that they could be a main dancer in an idol group, though I don’t really love Min Seoung's rapping vocals. He wasn’t bad or anything, I just didn’t love the sound. I liked Keon Hee’s natural deep vocal tone when he rapped, but his singing was a bit off key. Woo Jin’s vocals were shakier, both in rapping and singing. I think I’d give Jun Hyeon and Min Seoung higher scores over all -- either give them both a 3 and the others a 2, or give them both a 4 and the others a 3.
The MNET editing makes the performance look even better -- they might have brushed up Jun Hyeon’s vocals a little, but I’m not sure. We get to see Min Seoung’s flip three times, and there aren’t any shots of the vocal judges making that sour face they make.
The Space Council thinks they did great and might all get four stars.
Omigod, I’m in tune with the judges for once.
Keon Hee 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐
Woo Jin 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐
Jun Hyeon 4 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐
Min Seoung 4 stars⭐⭐⭐⭐.
Hang on, let me just double check that it’s not raining frogs or anything…. Nope, it’s just a normal day in our climate hell. I am just somehow agreeing with the judges!
Jun Hyeon is really happy to get 4 stars.
Tumblr media
Jun Hyeon has a lot of personality, folks. He reminds me of one of my younger cousins, so I find him irritatingly endearing, if that makes any sense. I just want to tell him to shut up, but in a nice way, you know?
11:50 Tall and Short Teams Perform Conduct Zero and Reveal
Back stage, two teams are waiting -- a team from China who are very tall, and a team from Japan who are kind of short. They great each other in Korean.
Tumblr media
The Chinese trainees interview (in Korean) that the Japanese trainees are cute, and call them “dongsaes” -- the Korean word for a younger sibling/friend. Snarkily, the show tells us that the Japanese trainees are actually older by a few years. A little number floats over the trainees heads, saying that Hiroto, Keita and Ma Jing Xiaoh are 22, 23, and 20 respectively.
Tumblr media
(I love the constant look of bewilderment on Jing Xiao’s face throughout this encounter. He must have been really nervous to perform, but it almost looks like he’s confused as to who these hobbits are.)
Jing Xiao is 19 in the international system, so that checks out. What’s weird is, I have Hiroto’s and Keita’s ages as 20 and 21 in the international system, which would make them 21 and 22 in the Korean system…? I used their birthdates and an online birthday → age now calculator because I was too lazy to do all that math. Anyway, must be something I don’t really understand about the Korean age system. That’s why I just use the international system in these recaps.
Anyway, no one cares. Let’s watch the Osaka team perform!
Conduct Zero
Tumblr media
Yuto is 18 and, if you’re wondering, 5’7. He’s ranked 69 right now, and is the only member of his team to give himself a confidence ranking of 3 stars instead of 4.
Kei is just 16, is also 5’7, and is a member of a “dance and vocal unit” called Edamame Beans, a subunit of EBiDAN, which seems to be some sort of AKB48 style giant “music collective” under Stardust Promotion. I don’t know much about it, but there you go. He’s in a dance position in that group. He’s ranked 76 right now.
Hiroto, not to be confused with all-star Haruto, is 20, was on Produce 101 Japan, and is signed under RBW and is on their pre-debut team. (RBW is the agency home of Mamamoo, Oneus, Onewe, and Purple Kiss.) Probably from all his pre-show exposure, and his cute face, he’s ranked 11 as of right now.
Keita is 21, a former YG Treasure Box contestant, and is a member of idol group Ciipher. He’s ranked 14 right now.
So yeah, the team comes out and Keita introduces them as “charming as takoyaki,” which Wikipedia tells me is a “Japanese snack made of a wheat flour-based batter and cooked in a special molded pan”, filled with diced octopus, and that it originated in Osaka.
Tumblr media
Oh man. That does look charming, now you mention it.
The judges talk to Keita about how long he’s been a trainee - 9 years - and how he is a debuted member of Ciipher. We have a sad piano segment about how hard it’s been for Keita, that debuting in Ciipher didn’t solve all his problems.
I didn’t know much about Ciipher, so I looked into them. They have three title track MVs, with 3-11 million views each. I liked “Blind” best, easily -- I added it to my playlist, let’s see how long it stays there. I don’t know, they have their charms -- I hope they find a song that really breaks through.
Everyone assumes they’ll do a cute song because they’re all “cute” and short (they’re all around 5’7, as far as I can tell, which isn’t THAT short but whatever). It seems obvious to me that they won’t do a cute song dressed in all black, and of course, they don’t.
After encouraging each other with pats on the back -- very “got your back” before an improv show vibe -- and to the shouts of “ganbare!” from the Space Council (ganbare/ganbatte = fighting!) they dive into Conduct Zero, a 2015 release from Block B’s subunit called Bastarz.
My take on their performance:
Overall, an enjoyable watch.
All four of them danced pretty decently in my opinion. Yuto and Hiroto didn’t have quite enough power, while Kei was maybe too powerful, needing to relax a little more. Keita struck the right balance between giving the moves power while still seeming relaxed in his performance.
Vocal wise, they were all fairly decent too. Yuto’s vocals were the shakiest,  but not by a lot. Keita’s rapping stood out -- good breath control, specific tone, all that good stuff. He also put some expression into it.
I would give Keita four stars, and the others 2 or 3 -- leaning more toward 3 for Kei for his strong dancing. I think it’s better to overdance than underdance.
The MNET editing is, if anything, kind, but it really looks like it’s the Keita-and-friends show.  The judging seems to be just about Keita, too. They say the “K” in Keita must stand for K-pop. Lip J, addressing him as Keita-san, tells him he got 4 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐. The others get 2 stars  ⭐⭐, which I guess is pretty fair. They seem happy with that.
At 17:05, the tall Shanghai team comes out in slow motion, and everyone freaks the absolute fuck out. Like they’ve never seen such tall, handsome people in their lives.
But the guys stand on stage in fig leaf position, clearly nervous.
Tumblr media
Here’s some info on them, including their heights since the show is obsessed:
Ma Jing Xiang is 19 years old and currently ranked 16th, and he’s 6’2. He’s a member of a predebut team called Midsummer Cubs, which is one of my favorite names for anything ever. Per kpop fandom wiki, “His specialty includes model walking and posing.”
Cai Jin Xin  is also 19 and currently ranked 42nd. He’s also 6’2. He claims to be good at “mind controlling.”
Zhang Shuai Bo is 20, 6’1, and ranked 22nd. He was also on Youth With You 3, but eliminated in 100th place (out of 119). Oh noooooo.
*Tao Yuan* is 23, 6’0, and has already left the show. I couldn’t find a reason why, but it has been mentioned that he’s going to debut as a member of a group called XODIAC, so maybe that’s it.
Everyone absolutely loses their shit about how handsome Jing Xiang is, which again reminds me that I am not always in tune with who is and who isn’t considered handsome on shows like that. Please understand, I’m not calling him ugly or anything, not at all. I’m just saying that if you were to ask me to pick out the most handsome guy on this whole show, it wouldn’t be him.
They look great just standing there…. But then they start performing.
My take:
Yeah, this isn’t good.
It’s tough to tell whether they’re all equally bad or if some might be better than others. For example, right at the start, Tao Yuan in the white fringed shirt does a movement about a full second after the others, which makes you not sure at first, were the others early or was he late, or both? And when many of the members are that far off key, it’s hard to tell if maybe some of the others might be on key, because your ear loses where the key should be. Also, if you’re on a team with people singing off key, it’s likely to throw you off key too. I feel like maybe Zhang Shuai Bo did a little better than the others, singing wise, but I really can’t be sure. I don’t have the energy to watch this performance any more times than I already have, so I’ll say that I’d give Shuai Bo 1 star and the rest no stars.
MNET editing could have been a lot worse. The Space Council think the team members look good with their long limbs, and credit is given for them attempting the song in its original key, but a series of bad notes makes the vocal judge make this face:
Tumblr media
In the MNET editing, they end to complete silence, but of course, in real life the trainees in the Space Council cheered for them when they were done. (You hear it in the Youtube full cam video.)
The dance judge, who choreographed this song in the first place, wants to say nice things about the performance because he likes his own choreography. He says he enjoyed watching their performance, which makes Shuai Bo smile so happily.
Tumblr media
Aww, my heart. He wasn’t expecting a single word of praise, you can just tell.
But the good times can’t last. The vocal judge says they were completely out of tune the whole time.
Ma Jing Xiang gets 2 stars⭐⭐, I assume for his handsomeness, because I see literally no other reason.
Cai Jin Xin with the mesh sleeves gets 0 stars.
Zhang Shuai Bo gets 1 star ⭐.
*Tao Yuan* gets 1 star ⭐.
For once, the judges were kinder than I was.
20:23 Uncomfortable Sexy Times
At 20:23, there is a break during which the trainees and the judges pose for the cameras and try to look sexy. Then Kim Ji Woong shows up on camera and everyone says “woah!” at his expression,
Tumblr media
but this is his constant facial expression. He’s not doing anything. He just always has that same, slightly confused look on his face. It might all be an act -- impossible to say.
Then there’s this strange segment in which Ji Woong’s neighbor and teammate, Yoon Jong Woo, pretends to kiss / actually kisses Ji Woong on the lips, interviewing that his heart was fluttering, yadda yadda. Ji Woong seems completely unbothered either way by this, and then they both admit it was just a show, something fun for the audience. So like, full on queerbaiting? Several trainees interview about how handsome Ji Woong is. Anyway feel free to skip to..
0:23:15 Mirotic
The judges tease Ji Woong about how he isn’t wearing a shirt under his suit jacket, then grill him about his acting career. And yeah, it seems that yeah, this was just a queer-baity act, because Ji Woong has thus far only appeared in BL (“boy love”) genre dramas, including one called “Kissable Lips” and another one called “Roomates of Poonduck 304.” (Those NAMES!) So it seems his whole team is doing a sort of sexy BL concept for their performance of Mirotic.
I don’t know much about this topic, but my impression is that once you’re in BL genre dramas, you kind of are stuck there. I do know that there is at least one Kpop group with a BL concept -- OnlyOneOf. They have really good music, as it happens, and I’m holding back from ranting about how much I loved their series of solo songs that they put out over the second half of 2022. From what I’ve seen, the gay community has embraced OnlyOneOf not as queer baiters but as representation for an underrepresented group. It feels fetishy to me, and inauthentic, but for a country with so much out-and-out homophobia, I guess it’s a step in the right direction…? I defer to any gay/queer/etc folk to weigh in on this, as it’s not really my place.
Ji Woong seems to live his life in a daze, just sort of accepting the fact that everyone who sees him, male and female alike, wants to fuck him. It’s just the background noise of his life. But he really loves singing and dancing (and maybe he wants to get out of the BL rut? No way to know) so he saw Boys Planet as a great opportunity.
Anyway, the performance.
It’s hard to separate the performance from their concept, which is, “What if Mirotic, but gay?” I wouldn’t mind that at all if it weren’t so fake and fetishy. It’s just as fake and fetishy as Madonna kissing Britney Spears at the MTV Music Awards 100 years ago. I have to remind myself that this might actually be representation for young gay folk in Korea, and maybe that makes it good…? Overall, it’s a decent performance, with 3+ star dancing, 2+ star vocals, and varied performance.
Tumblr media
*Jung Hwan Rok* has already dropped out of the show, perhaps to return to his group, withus. (Judges gave him 2 stars.)
Jeong I Chan age 21, ranked 52. He used to be known as Jeong Jaebeom when he was on the show I-Land (that produced Enhypen); he  spent most of his time on I-Land in the “Ground” team (low ranked) and was eliminated at the end of the first half. He has legally changed his name to 정이찬 Jung “Ee” Chan; he seems to want to go by “E-chan” now, but the show seems to spell it I-chan. I’m kind of surprised at his low rank, as I thought he had a fan base. On the other hand, oof. These vocals. He was about a full half-tone sharp right out the gate, and I think it threw off his whole team. Not great. I also got the impression he was uncomfortable with the concept. Maybe I’m wrong.
The judges give him 2 stars ⭐⭐, which seems fair.
Kim Ji Woong is ranked 2nd; he’s 24 years old.
He has a kind of surprisingly interesting vocal color, actually, and overall was a lot better than I’d feared he would be. He looks good dancing -- elegant, even. I was surprised, really. The judges give him 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐, which I actually think is pretty fair.
(Side note: you can’t hear the rose crumble in the youtube version; that was definitely the foley artist. For once, they got to add a sound effect other than the “gulp” noise!)
Lee Seung Hwan is 22 years old and ranked 13. He has really made the rounds of reality shows and whatnot. He was on Under19 and finished in 8th place, so he debuted as a member of project group 1THE9. When that group disbanded, he went on the show LOUD, where he was eliminated in the first round. He apparently was a backup dancer for Oneus during their US tour, so he must have some dancing chops.
And he does! But his performance style is a little flat, somehow, like unexciting, so I understand how he’d make a great backup dancer. He is the one who hits that high note (”yeahhhhh!”), and it sounded pretty good until he cracked. He didn’t let it show on his face either, so I give him that. They’re tired, IDK. I think he did fine, just not special. But I bet he’ll do well on the show, because he probably can pick up choreography quickly if he worked as a backup dancer.
The judges give him 2 stars ⭐⭐, which seems slightly low but not wildly so.
Yoon Jong Woo is 22 and currently ranked 73. He is listed as a rapper and was “Ze:U” in the very short lived idol group Black Level, whose debut single was called Infection. Really? Infection? In 2022? Read the room, folks. I mean, it’s like every mid-tempo kpop boy band song got thrown in a blender with one or two trop-house songs and then poured onto a pile of monochrome outfits. Not the fault of the trainees or anything.
His performance is fine -- he’s committed to the theme, I’ll say that. He does more rapping than singing, and both are fine. The judges praise him for dropping an octave at one point, and give him 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐, and that’s fine.
The MNET editing focuses on how sexy it is and how it makes everyone a combination of turned on and uncomfortable, apparently. The main vocal judge says repeatedly that it made him really uncomfortable. “I’ve never watched a boy group perform and feel strange like this,” he says. “This was a valuable first experience.”
28:21 Takuto Time
Honestly, I’m watching this so you don’t have to. Takuto comes out, makes big hearts with his arms, and everyone talks about how cute and young he is but how kind of weird he is for making hearts all the time.
My favorite moment is when he gives his age and the far more mature looking/behaving Han Yu Jin turns to his teammate and says, “He’s the same age as me.” I mean, Yu Jin is 15 and acts 25; Takuto is 15 and acts like he’s 5. I don’t have a lot of patience for this. Sorry if you like him a lot. He’s doing a thing, and maybe it’s secretly genius and I don’t get it. I know that Korean tolerance for over the top cutseyness seems to be higher than mine.
He does a song that Korean singer/legend Rain did in 2002 called “Instead of Saying Goodbye” (which Rain performed in boxing gloves). I bet it's a sentimental fave, but it's not good. It's like, what if “Party Up (Up In Here)” by DMX had its life and soul sucked out? And then its dry, brittle corpse was filled with stale bubble gum?
Tumblr media
Ah, the very early days of kpop.
Tumblr media
The song has been edited to include the voices of children laughing and saying “who are you?” (in English). It’s very Kidz Bop. He starts off with a random back flip, and then immediately loses his balance and falls when he lands, and that’s about it in terms of skills displayed. I’ll keep my comments short and sweet and say that the judge’s assessment of 0 stars seems very accurate to me, though I’ll add that the MNET editing that makes him seem half-witted is kind of unfair since he obviously just doesn’t speak or understand Korean, no matter how loudly and emphatically Solji speaks into her microphone.
Both “My Housers” feel like they’re welcoming Takuta to their house, as the beginning of that now cursed song begins playing ominously in the background.
Tumblr media
32:40 Replay
The next segment features the two trainees we met at the very beginning of the first episode, who rated themselves with just 1 star. They’re ranked pretty well, though -- all that camera time did them some good, rankings wise.
Lee Da Eul, with the lighter colored hair and light blue jacket, is 18 and ranked 4th.
Lim Jun Seo, with the darker hair and brighter blue jacket, is 17 and ranked 19th.
They are performing Replay, originally by SHINee, which I think is a smart choice for two teenage trainees. It’s one of those songs I never get sick of, even though it was already many years old when I first got into Kpop. They say it’s their first time performing in front of people -- they’ve only trained for a few months.
Tumblr media
As for their performance, It’s the same in the whole video as it is in the editing. They do their little talent show dance, sing semi on key, and are cute and spunky. I didn’t notice one being better than the other. When they’re done, the judges make them freestyle dance. Jun Seo freezes up at first, while Da Eul hams it up, dancing like a class clown trying to get attention. Finally Jun Seo does a summersault. The judges give them both 2 stars⭐⭐, which is obviously too high. They gave Jeon Woo Seok (barefoot Criminal performer) 1 star! Honestly, these judges are just trolling us.
I love these reactions from K-group:
Tumblr media
Top, left to right is Haru ⭐⭐ and Riku⭐, who perform in Maniac. In the second row is Na Kamden’s ⭐⭐⭐ denimed legs, then Jay⭐⭐⭐⭐; those two sang Rush Hour. Then we see tall Ichika⭐, be-hatted Itsuki ⦰, and Ouju⦰, who performed Shine. (We’ll be seeing a lot more of Ouju this episode). Directly under Riku two rows down is Ma Jing Xiang ⭐⭐ in the choker, with a squinting Cai Jin Xin ⦰next to him, and then Zhang Shuai Bo ⭐ -- those three performed in Reveal earlier. You also see a bit of Winnie, the Thai idol.
What I think is funny is their reactions. Yeah, Jay is fine, and Ichika seems like a sweet, classy guy who would clap for anyone. But msot of the rest of them are showing their irriation, disbelief, and annoyance. Yeah, of course, they might just be bummed that the competition to see who can get more stars and thus see the Signal Song a day earlier is very much not going toward the G-group. But they might be extra bummed that the judges are just handing out stars willy-nilly to the Korean trainees.  Were Da Eul and Jun Seo really that much better than Itsuki and Ouju, who got no stars? Were they better than Zhang Shuai Bo, with his hesitantly happy smile, who got 1 star? Were they as good as Haru, who got 2 stars? I don’t know.
So, yeah, the competition between K and G is heating up. Who on EARTH will win? No way to know, even though all along G groups have scored poorly and K groups have scored better. Who will win?
Then we have the briefest clips of multiple auditions, all of which the judges scored poorly:
Maniac, originally by Stray Kids, performed by Haru and Riku
UN Village, originally by Baehyun of EXO, performed by Wumuti
Love Scenario, originally by IKON, performed by Choi Seung Hun and Jeon Ho Young;
Lullaby, originally by GOT7, performed by Jung Ho Jin, Kim Min Hyuk, and Park Gwan Young
I’ll be covering these, and other audition performances that were skipped completely, in a separate post.
35:50 Things Get Real
The five members of Team The Real come out.
Tumblr media
Park Min Seok, age 20, is currently ranked 64th. He says his favorite song is Love Again by Baekhyun. Good choice.
Kim Tae Rae, age 20, is currently ranked 9th. More on him shortly.
Park Han Bin, age 20, is currently ranked 34th. He went on LOUD but was eliminated in the first round. He lists Woodz as someone he looks up to, which is a huge point in his favor.
Lee Jeong Hyeon, age 20, is currently ranked 35th.
Mun Jung Hyun, age 17, is currently ranked 24th. We’ve been seeing him a lot in the Space Council, like when he sat in Chair 1 in episode 1. He’s a former child actor -- he was in four movies between 2012 and 2017 (so when he was aged 5 to 10).
I have to rant a little more about Kim Tae Rae because I love him so much but don’t know why he’s ranked so high. He was on another reality show before, one called Top 10 Student, when he was 18; click here to watch him skillfully sing a boring duet on that show. (He’s on the left.) But I don’t know if that appearance explains his high ranking. Maybe it’s his cute intro video, where he plays the guitar and sings? I don’t think so, because it doesn’t have an unusual amount of views.  Could it really just be that people like his voice? I mean, that would fill me with joy. He’s so good, you guys. I get so happy when someone in Kpop can actually SING. He has a fantastic voice. It’s a tiny bit Baekhyun-esque, a similar vocal color anyway. Now I want to hear him, Baekhyun, and Lee Hwan Hee all sing together in close harmony. Ahhhhh….
Back to the point.
The judges think that Mun Jung Hyun looks like Kang Daniel, and I mean, maybe? The judges tease all the trainees about their relationship with the WakeOne team from G-group (Anthonny, Haruto, and Min, who did Glitch Mode) and Anthonny gives us this angry, eyes-like-daggers look:
Tumblr media
Just so we know that the rivalry runs deep and that they hate each other.
Interestingly, the judges completely fail to mention the other two WakeOne trainees who are going to do Bloom Bloom later on. WakeOne sent 10 trainees in total, which is wild but makes sense -- they manage Kep1er, so obviously have a good relationship with MNET and this franchise. WakeOne also recently took over management of T01 and they manage popular soloist Jo Yuri. I’m excited to see the team they debut out of this!
The judges ask them what is their unique strength, and blue-haired Hanbin replies, “There’s nothing we can’t do.” Out in the Space Council, Anthonny says that they’re good but that they (the G-group trainees) can beat them. And then they start.
My take:
You guys. I LOVED THIS PERFORMANCE. Just watch it on Youtube. The MNET editing is trying to make it look better with all the instant replays and reaction shots, but it is so much better if you just watch it and enjoy it. This is hands down my favorite audition from this round. A lot of the lyrics are “Look at our dance” and they sell that idea to the audience, as a group. If you watch each guys individually, yeah, you notice some little things to improve, but if you watch it just all together, there isn’t an obvious weak link.
Tumblr media
Kim Tae Rae with the light brown hair sang so well. Yeah, he cracks a little on that high note, but he’s a human being and god knows how exhausted they all were. He’s a genuine talent. He also brought a lot of energy and personality and performance to his dancing. He did drop his “face” here and there -- I think he may have been trying to look serious/determined, and it just came across as blank. But these are minor quibbles for the obvious main vocal. I give him 4 stars.
The judges give him 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐, just to make me angry, I guess.
Little Mun Jung Hyun did really well too. MNET didn’t air this part, but he does this cool raspy rapping rap in the middle and pulled it off. Not to mention his “chum deureogayu” (the dance starts now) he does, holding out the finger heart. So fun, so much personality. I did notice that his footwork needs a bit of work -- but from the waist up, he’s doing great. I showed this performance to my fella, and he picked out Mun Jung Hyun as his favorite performer. My fella has good taste -- he picked out Ten as the best dancer in The Seventh Sense. I’d give him 3 stars, just because I think he could use a tiny bit of work on his dancing, but I think he’s great. (I mean, I'd give Jung Hyun 3 stars. I'd give my fella 3 million stars!)
The judges agree with me -- Jung Hyun gets 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐.
Blue-haired Park Han Bin was obviously a major presence in the performance. My fella thought his big facial expressions were too big and annoying, but I didn’t feel that way about it. I thought it suited the song and the style they were going for. Also, he was the center, so it made sense for him to be doing that. All in all, I think he deserved what the judges gave him: 4 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐. But I disagree with LipJ, who says that he carried the whole team on his back. He didn’t have to do that; everyone here pulled his own weight.
Lee Jeong Hyeon in the white short sleeved jacked did some really excellent rapping, and had fun and varied facial expressions. Honestly, I don’t see a reason not to give him 4 stars, but the judges do -- he gets 3 stars ⭐⭐⭐.
Park Min Seok in the leather jacket must have been the lead vocal here -- he does some pretty good singing, perfectly on key and with good support and a pleasant tune. Sometimes you can kind of see him mentally counting the steps as he dances, but on the whole he does a great job. I would have been stuck between 3 and 4 stars and probably would have gone with 3, but the judges take another puff on their crack pipe and give him 2 stars ⭐⭐.
God this whole performance gets better every time I watch it. If I had seen this exact performance on some music show, I’d be stanning this team. Yes, part of it is that this song is good, but I have to say that I’m not the world’s biggest ATEEZ fan. Their music is just not really my style, as skilled and talented as the guys are. I guess I’m just not that into pirates. So I had never heard this song before. And honestly, I like this version better than any live version that ATEEZ themselves did. They bring so much energy and enthusiasm to it.
The Space Council loves the performance, too.
Haruto turns to Anthonny and reminds him that Anthonny said that the G-team was better than the K-team…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The judges tell them that even though they must have practiced a ton, they looked like they were having fun on stage, and yeah, that’s the point.
39:40 Trainee Lee Hoe Taek
Final boss Hui comes out, and everyone tenses up.
The judges ask him why he came on this show, and he says:
“I had hundreds of reasons. The biggest reason was… I needed change.” He interviews that when he got back from my military service, and returned to PENTAGON, things had changed a lot. He says that it’s been difficult for his team to even work with who they wanted to, that they were rejected a lot. He thought to himself, “We’re no longer appealing enough to work with.” It made him sad. “It was hard to overcome the invisible wall,” he says, as Solji blinks back tears. “The only option for me now is Boys Planet.”
We get a short montage, set to soft piano music, of other trainees who have already debuted, starting with the immensely talented Lee Hwan Hee from Up10tion, who we see in an interview wearing his embroidered red jacket. Thanks, MNET. Be sure to show him talking about how sad he is while showing a brief clip of his audition, instead of just, you know, showing us his fucking audition. (Although, to be fair, his audition wasn't good so maybe it was kind.)
We also hear from Seowon from NINE.i, then Cha Woonggi who used to be in T01, then Seowon again, saying “I thought everything would work out if I debuted.”  The judges are sympathetic, knowing that the competition is stiff in the industry: “It’s like entering the eye of a needle now.”
Lee Dong Yeol, better known (maybe) as Xiao in Up10tion, says, “I can’t perform just because I want to… I questioned what was in the future for me. I think I’m more desperate because I debuted.”
Ok, quick note: Up10tion has some really good songs. Check out Spin Off. It’s so fun. Big and brassy and bright. I also like What If Love a lot. Give them a chance, ok?
Anyway, the judges tell “trainee Lee Hoe Taek” to perform, and he does.
Tumblr media
My take: He does his version of BlackPink’s Shut Down, which probably means something to him emotionally, and he shuts it down, and fuck anyone who says otherwise.
Why do we have this thing that everyone has to be an all-rounder? Hui is a top tier vocalist and he can write and produce songs. Why should he have to be the best dancer in the world, too? He isn’t the best dancer; he’s good enough to be a main vocal who dances next to the main dancer. Is D.O. from EXO a fantastic dancer? Is Chen? Nope. They dance well enough that they pull their weight, and then your eye goes to Kai, hamming it up in the center. Is Kai a fantastic singer? Nope. He has improved a ton, but he’s still not as good as most of his teammates and that’s OK. That’s why we have groups in k-pop. Jesus fuck.
So, I refuse to say, “Oh, his dancing is a tiny bit stiff, I hate this performance.” He MADE that the remix. He brought in the original violin piece that BP sampled, and used a larger clip of it. He sang and then layered his backup vocals. I bet he choreographed it himself because no way is his agency supporting him, and he’s probably too proud to ask for help. Then he sang, live, impeccably, while dancing well enough to entertain.
So fuck the judges for implying they might have given him 3 stars because his dancing “wasn’t good enough.” If you’re going to give some nearly-tone-deaf trainees 4 stars, then give Hui 5 stars. Fuck.
Tumblr media
48:00 Who won between K group or K group?
With that, they end the auditions and announce the winner. They hem and haw and drag it out of course, but K group won by a landslide.
Tumblr media
Out of 200 stars awarded, 119 went to K group, representing 59.5% of the vote, and making the ratio of stars awarded just about 3:2 in favor of K group. K Group is excited to get the benefit of being able to practice the Signal Test Song one day earlier, but I don’t know why that’s such a benefit, since it’s obviously the exact same song they used for every other male version of this show.
Click here for my take on the auditions that weren’t aired: Attention, Bloom Bloom, Freak, Gambler, Love Scenario, Lullaby, Maniac, UN Village, Veil, and Who. That’s a total of 18 trainees we didn’t see perform at all.
Click here for the second half of this recap of Ep 2, 49:34 to the end.
Thanks for reading! If you're enjoying the recaps, tell a friend! This kind of recap appeals to a specific kind of person so I'm not sure how people will find me, so word of mouth would help a lot. Thanks! <3

Boys Planet, Post Episode 8 Analysis: What Next for the Eliminated Trainees?
Tumblr media
In this post, I’ll give you the full analysis of the Korean vs. Global vote for the top 30. Then I’ll tell you the ranking of the eliminated trainees (ranked 29 through 51), and I’ll discuss what I think will happen next for each of the eliminated trainees! I also found a few last notes from eliminated trainees posted on social media that I can share with you. I think it’s all decently interesting so click Read more or Keep reading or whatever, get your spreadsheets and calculators ready (jk, I already did that) and let’s go!!!!
Voting analysis:
Spreadsheets are the best, my friends.
Here is the top 30 as it would be if only Korean votes counted (no benefits). The number after the name is the trainee’s real rank in episode 8. Trainees whose “Korean only” rank is five or more spaces different than their real rank will be marked in bold.
Sung Hanbin               1
Han Yu Jin               3
Kim Tae Rae               7
Kim Gyu Vin               6
Kim Ji Woong             5
Zhang Hao               2
Seok Matthew            4
Kum Jun Hyeon 10
Wang Zi Hao             19
Park Gunwook   9
Hui                         11
Park Hanbin             13
Yoo Seung Eon 17
Yoon Jong Woo 15
Ricky                       14
Keita                         8
Na Kamden             20
Zhang Shuai Bo 23
Lee Jeong Hyeon 24
Seo Won             18
Mun Jung Hyun 29
Lee Seung Hwan 21
Ma Jing Xiang 30
Jay                       12
Takuto                         25
Cha Woong Ki            26
Chen Kuan Jui 22
Hiroto                         28
Haruto                        16
Ollie                         27
It’s kind of interesting that the Korean population really likes Wang Zi Hao, but is comparatively cold towards Keita, Jay, and especially Haruto. Given the way that the show works, it’s more important to have Korean support than global support, so expect Wang Zi Hao to have a decent chance at making the Top9 at the end, and brace yourself to lose Keita, Jay, and Haruto. I know, I’m bummed too.
It’s also kind of interesting that if the Korean population was in charge, the two “evil edited” trainees, Ma Jing Xiang and Zhang Shuai Bo, would be much higher ranked, and in fact, MJX would have survived this elimination. You’d think that the sinophobia that MNET manifests again and again would influence Korean voters, but it doesn’t seem to.
And here is the inverse -- the top 30 as it would be if only Global votes counted (again, no benefits). Again, the number after the trainees’ names is their real rank. Particularly noteworthy differences are marked in bold.
Zhang Hao                 2
Keita                             8
Seok Matthew     4
Sung Hanbin                 1
Kim Ji Woong                5
Han Yu Jin                 3
Jay                           12
Haruto                           16
Kim Gyu Vin                 6
Park Gunwook     9
Ricky                           14
Kim Tae Rae                 7
Hui                           11
Wang Zi Hao               19
Yoon Jong Woo   15
Park Hanbin               13
Kum Jun Hyeon   10
Chen Kuan Jui   22
Ollie                           27
Seo Won               18
Lee Seung Hwan   21
Hiroto                           28
Takuto                           25
Yoo Seung Eon   17
Cha Woong Ki             26
Na Kamden               20
Zhang Shuai Bo   23
Lee Jeong Hyeon   24
Mun Jung Hyun   29
Ma Jing Xiang            30
Obviously, just that top 4 is interesting -- Zhang Hao in number 1, and Sung Hanbin sinking to 4th place behind Keita and Matthew. It’s also kind of interesting how the international community doesn’t seem to be super into Kim TaeRae, my little cousin, Kum Jun Hyeon, or titanium voiced Yoo Seung Eon. This does suggest that if any of them make it into the final lineup, they may end up not as popular down the road, though who really knows -- I mean, did anyone see Chaewon from Iz*one ending up where she is now? Or Yunjin, who didn’t even make the Iz*one lineup?
I think the varied support is actually kind of good news for a lot of the trainees -- if they don’t make the final lineup in Korea, they might be able to go a more ATEEZ/Everglow route of being popular globally, even if they’re not super popular in Korea. It’s still making a living through singing and dancing, and I think a lot of them would be glad for that.
Eliminated Trainees: Final Ranking and What’s Next
29. Mun Jung Hyun 30. Ma Jing Xiang 31. Cai Jin Xin 32. Anthonny 33. Park Ji Hoo 34. Wumuti 35. Oh Sung Min 36. Lee Ye Dam 37. Brian 38. Jung Min Gyu 39. Chen Jian Yu 40. Lim Jun Seo 41. Ji Yun Seo 42. Dang Hong Hai 43. Cong 44. Lee Dong Yeol 45. Krystian 46. Bak Do Ha 47. Lee Da Eul 48. Park Hyunbeen 49. Jung I Chan 50. Choi Woo Jin 51. Lee Dong Gun
I found that ranking online, and while I can't confirm it, it strikes me as accurate. Below, I'll discuss what I see ahead for the various eliminated trainees, including a few who were eliminated in the first cut. I got out my crystal ball and tarot cards and watched the crows outside for a while and then typed up what came into my head. Let's go!
The WakeOne trainees: Anthonny(32),  Mun Jung Hyun(29) and Oh Sung Min (35)
I’m optimistic for these trainees because WakeOne has a serious pool of talent on their hands. They sent ten trainees to the show, and we can hope that most of them will make it into the WakeOne group, which will be called, oh I don’t know, Won1One or something.
Wakeone trainees Kim Tae Rae, Park Hanbin, and Haruto are both doing really well on the show, and seem to me quite likely to make it through the next cut. Lee Jeong Hyeon and Cha Woongki are a little lower ranked but are both getting noticed, in different ways.  Anthonny, Mun Jung Hyeon, and Oh Sung Min at least survived the first cut, and Anthonny and Mun both almost survived the second. And Anthonny had a lot of early support -- he was ranked 8th i the first episode. So he certainly got some viewer’s attention, even if their gaze strayed later on.
The two trainees who were cut in episode 5 are less certain to debut in Won1One, but it’s not impossible. Park Min Seok, who you may have forgotten, was the leader of the blighted K-leftovers team in Eps 3-4 and ended up shooting up in the rankings from 84 to 61. I think if the voting period had gone a little longer, he might have survived. Min, who you may also have forgotten, was chosen by Keita for the Kill This Love team, and I trust Keita’s assessment of him, so Min must have some skills -- but he wasn’t particularly popular, so he’s the one I’m most worried about seeing again. 🙁
It seems likely that at least one of TaeRae or Park Hanbin will make the final Bepler lineup, so if so, while he or they are performing with Bebler, I’m hopeful that Wakeone will be getting some songs ready to debut their team as soon as they’re done. I’m looking forward to seeing them all again. Won1one, fighting!
The Yuehua trainees: Brian (37) and Ji YunSeo (41)
Yuehua sent eight trainees -- remember the two “Kick It” groups? Only Brian and Ji YunSeo have been eliminated; the other six --  Ollie, Ricky, Zhang Hao, Han Yu Jin, Kim Gyu Vin, and Yoo Seung Eon are all obviously doing pretty well on the show so far. I think it’s fair to say that at least two of those are going to make the final lineup (Hao + at least one of Yujin and Gyuvin), and I think Ricky is at least going to pass the next cut. SeungEon might as well, but Ollie probably won’t, in part because he jammed his smelly finger into the camera during the “Planet Camp” bit this episode and that will make viewers associate him with bad smells, subconsciously, and they won’t want to vote for him as much.
But regardless, Yuehua is 8 for 8 in terms of having trainees pass the first cut, and 6 for 8 in trainees passing the second, and that’s pretty good. I don’t see any reason for Yuehua not to debut a team of eight and call it, oh, I don’t know, Everboy, or Boyglow. No real reason to leave out Brian and Ji YunSeo. I mean, YunSeo was in that Backdoor team that performed on M-Countdown, and that video is still getting plenty of views -- so even though his popularity wasn’t super strong, he is going to continue to get exposure. He also is a really solid vocalist. And Brian is a cutie-pie who is also a native speaker of English. So I feel pretty good that Brian, YunSeo, and all the rest will land on their feet, just fine. Everboyglow, fighting!
The houses: Bak Do Ha (46) and Jung Min Gyu (48)
Both of these trainees are actors. Mingyu (the red house) already been in some minor dramas and stuff, and DoHa (the blue house) was in this webseries with Jiwon from Cherry Bullet. I think both of them left a good impression in terms of their personality and looks -- Mingyu is a bit more lovable, and Doha is a bit more “sexy”, but I think both were likable, and that’s important. I neither think nor hope that either will debut as idols, but I think both will do well as actors, and that’s cool for them and us! K-dramas, fighting!
Krystian:
Krystian’s going to be fine, ya’ll.
Tumblr media
Check out his insta -- @krystianwang. I think the “I’M FREEEEE!!!!!” caption says it all. He also has a post with the Limousine performance with the caption “LIMOUSINE (R.I.P크리스티안)” - - that a R.I.P. for the Korean spelling of his name. He has another post with a selfie and the caption “No rush, no rush.” So yeah, I think he’s fine.
My prediction? I think he’ll go more of a B.I. / Jackson Wang route of just making the music he likes and releasing it through Youtube. I hope he does, in fact. I don’t think he’s made to be a team player.
Krystian, Jiayou!  加油!
The other Chinese trainees: Cai Jin Xin, Chen Jian Yu, Ma Jing Xiang, and Wumuti
I think Ma Jing Xiang will probably go into modeling. He’s 6’2 and 19 years old, and I just think modeling will be easier for him. I’m sure he’ll be fine!
Cai Jin Xin is signed with an agency called TopClass, which also manages Xiaoting from Kep1er but not really anyone else. Like MJX, he’s also 6’2 and 19 years old. I think he’s demonstrated that he has a lot of trouble with both vocals and dancing, and I think he’ll end up going into modeling as well.
Chen Jian Yu is a little bit of a different story. He seems really heart-set on becoming an idol -- he did Youth With You 3 before he came to Boys Planet. Problem is, though, that on his intake form he said that he is still looking for his specialty, and that seems to be the case, even though he’s 24. He’s signed with an agency called Star On Entertainment, about which I can find NOTHING online. So…  I don’t know what will happen for him. But it’s not like he was notably dreadful, but he missed his cue in the Star Level test, and made a few obvious dancing mistakes in the GGang performance. I wish him well, and it’s not impossible that he’ll eventually land on his feet, but I’m not super optimistic.
Boys Planet was also the second survival show for Wumuti -- he participated in Under19, but he left the program right before the final episode citing “personal issues.” He did well there, and actually did pretty well here, finishing in 34th place. I think he has an amazing work ethic, as shown in the first hour of Episode 8. I bet he impressed all the industry people he met in those producer meetings, and maybe something good will come out of that. He’s devoted to this, and I don’t think he’s going to give up. Between his hard work, his sweet attitude, his charm, and his singing voice, I think he could find a place for himself. I’m not sure if China will embrace him, due to his status as an ethnic minority, but I hope so. Hey, go follow him on Insta! He’s @wumutit . He posted this note:
Tumblr media
Chinese trainees, Jiayou!  加油!
The Vietnamese trainees: Cong (43) and Dang Hong Hai (42)
Vietnam is for sure into kpop -- when I was there a few years ago, I remember seeing a big billboard for GWSN (oh, GWSN! 🙁) -- but it absolutely does have its own music scene. I don’t know much about it -- I only know Love Charms by Bich Phuong, which is a complete BOP. I’m low key obsessed with it. If you listen to it and hate it, I will personally mail you some cheese crackers as an apology for having wasted your time. In any case, my point is that Vietnam is building its own music scene. Cong and DHH are both super popular in Vietnam, especially DHH, and if things don’t work out for them in Korea, I think they could easily make a good living as idols in Vietnam. DHH probably has a better shot -- he was more popular than Cong, and also is signed to Fantagio, while I don’t think Cong is signed at all. It’s not impossible that Fantagio will sign Cong and they’ll debut together. Fighting, guys!
The wunderkinds: Park Ji Hoo(33) and Han SeoBin (60)
Tumblr media
I always think about this moment in episode 1, when Hui stole the first chair seat from Park JiHoo. That’s all we knew about JiHoo then, that he had just gotten that seat. What did he do to get it? Knowing him like we do know, I bet he challenged whoever it was to a rap battle or something. Did we see whatever he did? Nope.
I’m so glad we got to know him a bit more in later episodes. We also got a glimpse of his friend, Han Seobin, who seems to have earned the respect of the judges and trainees alike.
I think JiHoo and SeoBin probably would have hated being on Bepler anyway. They’re signed to H1GHR MUSIC, which is where the judge pH1 is signed, among a bunch of rap artists I’d actually heard of, like Sik-K, and producers I actually recognize as well --  GroovyRoom and Woogie. Go make your own music, you teenage geniuses. I believe in you.
The babies: Lee Da Eul(47), Lim Jun Seo (40), and Lee Dong Gun (51)
Lee Da Eul and Lim Jun Seo are both signed to 143 Entertainment, which is also home to iKON, as in, yes, that iKON, the one that used to be at YG. iKON moved there only a few months ago, when their contract expired at YG. So 143 must be doing something right.
143 is also home to a small girl group called Limelight, which features MiU, a Japanese trainee who was eliminated from GP999 in the first round. Their song Eye to Eye isn’t terrible, by the way. And Lim Jun Seo is in the video, if that’s a draw for you? Also, it’s not impossible that Kang Yeseo and Mashiro will end up in that group when their term of service is done with Kepler.
So what I’m saying is that 143 Entertainmnet seems to be on the way up, and has demonstrated a willingness to debut groups relatively soon after their members leave reality shows, even if they don’t do stunningly well.
I think people will forgive DaEul, because he’s a boy and boys get forgiven in Korea. And people always liked JunSeo just fine despite his obvious need for more training. So I predict that 143 Entertainment will put them in a group with one or two more boys -- maybe an ex Youth With You-3 trainee they dig up, or a few other lost lambs from LOUD or even Boys Planet -- and they’ll call it, oh I don’t know, BoyStage or something, and they’ll put out a pre-debut single that fuses trop house with both synth pop and yelling, and the video will get 1 million views over the course of 6 months. After that, my crystal ball goes dim. But fighting, boys! I wish you both well.
As for Lee Dong Gun, he is apparently a member of a pre-debut group called Rare House, so he’s being managed, though who knows if anything will come of that. He’s really pretty, and a good dancer, and is still really young. His singing obviously needs a lot of work. He didn’t exactly thrive on this show, but he certainly had some fans. We’ll just see what the future holds for him. Fighting!
The Dongsaengs: Park Hyunbeen (48) and Choi Woo Jin (50)
Park Hyunbeen is signed to Jellyfish, along with General Gunwook and his two sergeants who he lost in episode 5,  Han Yu Seop (85) and Jang Yeo Jun (62).
Choi WooJin is signed to RedStart Media, along with my little cousin, Kum Jun Hyeon, and the two trainees who were cut in episode 5, Hong Keon Hee(84) and the talented Kim Min Seoung(58).
So in both cases you have one popular trainee in a group of four, with only one of the other three surviving to the second cut. But also in both cases you have some talent in the trainees who got cut. Park Hyunbeen is actually pretty charming on stage, Hong Keon Hee just sort of makes me smile, and Kim Min Seong, though completely ignored by MNET, is really great, you guys. He was on the Backdoor-K team! He’s the one who does the flip right at the end of Backdoor -- and you know that MNET hates him because they only showed it once. THEY ONLY SHOWED A BACKFLIP ONCE, YOU GUYS. (Right before he does the flip, the whole team shouts MINSEONG-AH! affectionately. Watch it again!)
Anyway, it’s hard to know what will happen, but I fear that both these groups of four will debut post-Bepler, and it’ll be like WekiMeki and Gugudan, or Astro or CIX or even IVE, where a few extremely popular trainees vastly overshadow the rest of the group.
So here’s what I propose, Redstart and Jellyfish, and hear me out. Put all eight of these trainees on a group together! Gunwook can be the leader and center, Jun Hyeon can be main vocal, and the rest can be sub vocals and rappers. You can name the group, oh, I don’t know, R.J.A.S.F., pronounced “Raz” (the J and the F will be silent). It’ll stand for “Red Jellyfish Always Swim Free” and the group concept will be that they are encouraging their fans to swim through life’s troubles with bright cheer. I mean, I’m on board, aren’t you? RJASF, Fighting!
The Nugus: Lee Dong Yeol (44), Lee Hwanhee (46*), Jang Ji Ho (63), and Winnie (80)
*Lee Hwanhee withdrew after episode 5, but was ranked 46 at that time.
I don’t know what’s going to happen to either Up10tion or NINE.i in the future. It’s not impossible that being on this show will boost these two groups. It happened for Nu’est when 4 of their members went on Produce101 Season 2. But it doesn’t strike me as super likely in this case.
So I hope for good things, but don’t expect them.
Seo Won, who is on NINE.i with JiHo and Winnie, is still on the show, but it seems extremely unlikely that he’ll make the final Top9. Neither JiHo nor Winnie made much an impact, unfortunately. So we’ll have to see.
Up10tion’s contracts are all up in 2023 and a bunch of them have already left the agency, but not the group. Will they start to get better songs now, if they have more control in the future? Will people give them a chance? I don’t know. But I do know that Spin Off by Up10tion is a great song that just gets better the more you listen to it. Lee Hwanhee’s vocals are all over that thing. Go give it a listen. It can only help. Fighting, guys!
The Conundrums: Lee Ye Dam (36) and Jung I Chan (49)
These are two who are a bit tougher to know what to do with.
Jung I-chan, who I think prefers to call himself E-Chan, just doesn’t seem set up to be a K-pop idol. His facial expressions show every stray thought he has. He seems to lose focus quickly and seems to lack self-control or a sense of what he might seem like to other people. On the other hand, he has some musical talent and a lovely singing voice. Please go check out his Youtube Channel. He posts a lot of covers that he’s clearly making in his bedroom on a little Casio keyboard or something, but they’re good. My hope for him is that he gets to make OST songs (those are soundtracks for dramas -- a good reliable source of income for people who can actually sing but can’t really dance or perform), because really, that’s what he can do: sing. Good luck, hon.
As for Lee Yedam, oof, this is tough. I think his agency wants to push him as a soloist, but it’s not going to work out for him as a soloist. Yeah, it breaks my heart. I think he’s so effing talented, you guys. And a cutey! Shorter guys are sexy too! I don’t know what the obsession is with height. Shorter people are better on airplanes! They eat less so they’re climate friendly! Hurray for short people!
Anyway, I don’t think his agency can field a whole boy group to put him on, so I hope that he breaks his contact and goes to another agency where he can be put in a boy group. Just as there are visual members, and sexy members, and cheerful members, a lot of boy groups have “unthreatening” members. You know, the boy who is a little more approachable than the others, and who girls can daydream is their boyfriend that they cheat on with the sexy member. On Exo, it’s Xiumin. On SHINee, it was probably Onew (when they debuted). On NCT, I’d say it’s probably Doyeon, but I don’t know NCT too well. On TXT, it’s probably Taehyun. You know what I mean? Often the approachable member is also super talented, too, and it’s not like they’re unpopular, but they’re just not usually people’s bias.
Lee Yedam would be ideal for that kind of role. He's a super talented all-rounder who would be a good addition to basically any team. He can pull off cute concepts and sexy concepts. He would be unlikely to be people’s biases, but fans of the group would be protective of how talented and sweet he is. So Yedam, if you’re reading this -- go find a bigger agency that can put you on a big team. Maybe go approach Jellyfish or Redstart!
Lee Yedam, fighting!
Everyone, fighting!
So that brings me to the end of this post. I can’t really see the future, but as always, I hope everyone find a soft place to land. I really, really, do.
And you, too, dear reader. May your bed be comfortable at night, may your coffee be hot in the morning, and may your afternoons be lazy and bright.
See you next time!
(And btw, sorry for the lack of images in this post, but it would have taken a long time to add them and I just want to try to keep up with the episodes!)

Boys Planet, Episode 6 Recap Part 2a: Gang and Zoom
Tumblr media
Ok, team! It’s time to recap the first two performances of the second challenge mission: Gang (or Ggang) and Zoom. Let’s do it!
We pick up at 1:07:14 with a brief montage of the boys rehearsing.  I know most of ya’ll can’t read Korean so I’ll help you know who said what, especially since often who we see onscreen isn’t who is talking:
D-7:
Na Kamden: “It was a bit difficult this time. For real.”
D-6:
Choi Woo Jin: “Everything was all mixed up in my head.”
Park Hanbin: “I wasn’t sure if I could do a good job.”
D-5:
Yoon Jong Woo: “It was pretty tough for me.”
D-3:
Park Hyun Been: “As though I’m burning the last passion I’ve got without regrets.”
D-2:
Na Kamden: “The most impactful performance in the history of these programs ever?”
Keita: “We’ll create a legendary performance…”
D-1:
Chen Kuan Jui: “...that people would want to see again.”
Finally, it’s D-day! Crowds are lining up around the block, holding up signs and stuff. The boys are getting ready. The 95% female crowd files in, and they are all Kermit-meme level crazy and shrieking like banshees. That’s fun! I bet they had a great time.
Tumblr media
The boys come in, in order of rank I assume, led by Sung Hanbin and Seok Matthew, who are holding hands.
The judges are again sitting on folding chairs in that room with the single small window with the broken blinds, which I assume is on Minhuyn’s space station. I can’t get over how the producers don’t even give them a table, so the judges have to keep their clipboards in their laps. Poor Solji wore a short skirt and has to keep her knees super close together the whole time. My inner thighs are tired just thinking about it.
Tumblr media
The judges pretend not to know who the host will be, but it’s still Huta from BTOB, who informs us that only 28 trainees will survive the next elimination.
Then he explains the live voting system. It’s a bit different this time. The audience members were each given a thingy dingy with two buttons, A and B; Huta say that they can press the “A” button if they think the team did well, and the “B” button if they think the performance was disappointing, and do the same for each trainee. So instead of voting for a favorite, the audience members basically vote pass/fail for everyone and everything. If I were in the audience, I’d be of no use to anyone in terms of assessment because I’d just wear out the A button.
In any case, it’s Time to Shine!
1:11:41 Gang by H1GHR Music
This is spelled onscreen as 깡, which is better transliterated as Ggang, as opposed to 강, which would be Gang. The little symbol top left is the K/G symbol, and see how there are two of them in 깡 and only one of them in 강? Just your little Korean lesson of the day. The on screen translation on Viki says that “ggang” sounds like the word for “guts”, which is 끈기, or Ggeungi. I guess it sounds similar, sure.
As the camera pans around, we keep seeing a trainee in glasses and a light green sweater that says Serenity on it, and I was like, who is that -- and it’s Jung Mingyu, better known as “Red House”! Wow, that’s a different look.
Anyway, on to Gang!
I’ll remind you that these are the members of the gang:
Trainee name (rank)   Star Level test / Challenge 1 /age final star level
Kum Jun Hyeon (14) Nunu Nana / Backdoor - K /19 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Lee Seung Hwan 🍑(20) Mirotic / Danger - K /22 ⭐⭐⭐
Mun Jung Hyun 🧁(23) The Real / Very Nice - K /17 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Lee Jeong Hyeon (39) The Real / Love Me Right - K /20 ⭐⭐⭐
Chen Jian Yu (45) Call Me Baby /Back Door - G/ 24 ⭐
And Lee Seung Hwan 🍑 is their leader. I use a peach symbol next to his name partly to help you remember who I’m talking about, and partly because I think he’s just peachy.
Tumblr media
Left to right, that is Chen Jian Yu, Lee Jeong Hyun, Mun Jung Hyun, Kum Jun Hyeon, and  Lee Seung Hwan.
So, is stylist noona angry at Lee Seung Hwan🍑, or….? Because those sparkly MC Hammer pants are a choice. An incorrect choice. On the other hand, his hair and makeup look amazing.
Tumblr media
Normally, the host will talk to the leader of a group, but this host talks to my little cousin Kum Jun Hyeon. Then again, I think Kum Jun Hyeon would have answered even if the question had been addressed to someone else.
Huta says, “I heard that the atmosphere was not good when this team was first formed.”
Kum Jun Hyeon yells, “When we got Ggang, I was perplexed. I thought of the opportunity as a crisis.” He almost certainly means that he tried to think of the crisis as an opportunity, referring to that old chestnut about the same chinese character being used for both words, but he gets the order wrong and it ends up not quite meaning what he meant.
And, at 1:12:52 we head into flashback mode. Woobly woobly woo!!
As we recall from earlier in the episode, their whole deal is that this team is mostly people who got kicked out of the song they wanted. Since no one really knew how to make choreo, my little cousin Kum Jun Hyeon stepped up, yelling, “Although I can’t guarantee the quality, if I didn’t do it, I didn’t think anyone else could do it.”
Ok, this team has a Jun Hyeon, a Jung Hyun, and a Jeong Hyeon, so I’m going to call them by their family names -- Kum, Lee, and Mun🧁, the latter of whom you may recall is my little muffin.
So, Kum has in fact stepped up to choreograph! That peach, Seung Hwan 🍑, says of Kum: “Jun Hyeon is always shouting, and he says ‘moe moe kyun,’ that’s who he is. But when he started creating and practicing the choreography, I saw a new side of him.”
We see what he’s talking about -- Kum is taking it really seriously and seems to be doing a good job, not being satisfied with it until it’s perfect. We also catch snippets of his singing and it’s really good, which is something that’s so easy to forget about my little cousin, that he’s actually a really good singer as well as a good screamer. It’s cute to see Kum completing something and being proud of himself.
Tumblr media
In fact, late at night in the dorms, Kum is still yelling about the choreo with leader Seung Hwan 🍑. He’s thinking about the choreo, yells that he needs to go to sleep, then lies down and keeps doing the hand/arm part of the choreo. Awww.
But I had to show this screen shot to point out a few things.
The matching pajamas are gone. Whence did the pajamas originate, and whither did they disappear?
Kum has given up on sheets, which is such an 19-year-old guy thing to do.
Seung Hwan has a stuffy of a yellow duck or chicken, as well as a very dapper set of pjs.
We cut to the big trainee-self-eval day.
Tumblr media
Basically the Ggang group does a great job. The rapping and dancing are all great, and people especially compliment the “two-jung-hyuns”. The phrase refers to Mun Jung Hyun 🧁and Lee Jeong Hyeon, who are both WakeOne trainees and who will likely (I hope???) debut in the same group as Kim Tae Rae 💖and formerly-blue-haired Park Hanbin.  I mean, seriously, just debut, you’re already perfect. Anyway. Mun and Lee apparently are good friends, but it’s awkward for them since Lee is super talented but ranked pretty low (39) while Mun is ranked 23. Aww.
Lee is really great too -- all five members of The Real were near perfect in my opinion (including the already eliminated Park Min Seok, who gained a ton of fans as leader of the Burn it Up team but just couldn’t quite get up to #52). I think the thing about Lee is that he’s just great so there’s no… hook? He’s great on stage, he has all the skills. He seems like a nice guy who everyone likes. And he’s good looking in a way that if you think he’s good looking, you’ll also think that a lot of other trainees are good looking. Meanwhile, Mun🧁 is sort of distinctive looking, so you remember his face later. A face like Mun’s or Tae Rae’s is sort of polarizing, I guess -- but at least it’s memorable. Lee could absolutely be the visual member of a group, and yet, it’s by looking for Tae Rae and Mun that you’ll recognize the group when you see it. At least that’s my take on it.So yeah, Lee Jeong Hyeon, I think you’re great and I am so looking forward to being a fan of your group once it debuts. Fighting!!
Seriously, the WakeOne group is the one I’m looking forward to most out of all of this, which is why I keep talking about it. Imagine, the five trainees I mentioned -- Mun, Lee, Tae Rae, Park Min Seok, and Park Hanbin -- plus possibly Haruto, Anthonny, Min, and Cha Woongki. Right? That’s fucking STACKED. You have a main vocalist, many capable lead and sub vocalists, some excellent rappers, some amazing dancers, and 100% lovable fellas. I want to just end the show now and start stanning that group.
Ok, anyway.
It’s show day. The boys are back stage doing some pushups before the set, so that their arms and abs will be tired and sore, I guess. Someone in the audience shouts out, “Thank you for giving birth to [Kum] Jun Hyun!” Somewhere, his mother yells, “I didn’t have much choice in the matter!” We also see a young man in the audience -- I think -- holding a sign for Mun 🧁.
At 1:16:52, the performance begins. They introduce themselves as “Korean Chipmunks,” which is hanguk daramjwi, which kind of sounds like “hundred dollar bill”, which is a recurring lyric in the song. (You hear it, sorta, when they chant their team name.)
The performance
Link
Original song
Apparently pH-1, the extremely alkaline rap judge on Boys Planet, is one of the rappers on this song, which the show never mentions once. Weird.
Since the boys wrote their own lyrics, I really did care what they were saying, and since the show didn’t give us translations, I had to look them up. These are the translations I found for the rap parts -- they’re a three way blend of several different sources, along with some of my own translation, but my main source is a Reddit post I found.
🍑Seunghwan:
It reeks of cowards in here
Even if I’m not invited, today I’m a VIP
I wonder if he’s going to die after I pushed him
No need to go back and forth, I’m dogged Hey!
Lee Jeonghyeon (there’s a lot of word play in this verse):
Hit it and go to the top, No cap (no lies) woo,
Too fast. too fast, brake, Step on it more like it’s broken
Turn and flip over the falling numbers, Starting from the bottom there’s only up,
Chill, like back when I was a kid, Keep it in your heart, Peace
🧁Mun Junghyun:
Yeah the next unexpected start, It’s our time to receive their will
It’s different from the time when I was ignored
Because I’m ready to carry on the will of those who left
We know how to go higher (Higher)
My heart is burning like fire (Fire)
To go higher you need modesty, passion, and style
Kum Junhyeon:
Give me a song to sing, I don’t want to rap, I’m scared of how I’ll look in the gang, stage I’m whoo…
Jianyu:
Sometimes cute, sometimes sexy, There’s something to get from here
Look at how I can make you scream with my skills, here I am alone
You know I don’t wear no new (shoes)
So you know how hard it is to get what I want, shut up
Tumblr media
My take
This was never going to be my favorite performance of the rap and vocal groups because it just isn’t my favorite song. It’s not anyone’s fault -- it’s totally a matter of taste. But overall, this was good. Yeah, some of the dancing was a little un-synced up, and some of the moves were a little boring, but it ended up looking fine. I wish I could appreciate all the word play and other poetic elements, but I can’t, so  I’m not able to really analyze the quality of the rapping. But in terms of delivery, I think that 🧁Mun stood out a bit. I also think 🍑Sunghwan did great as the center. It helps that he’s the most “manly” looking. And every time I hear Kum sing, I am surprised anew at how nice his voice is. I understand why he wanted a song to sing, and loved that that was his “rap.”
Semi side note: So, I was watching the performance, and at about :37 in, when Mun is in the center, the team does this sort of fall-sideways-down thing, and I said to myself, “self?” I said, and I answered “yes?” and I asked, “Was Kum on the team Very Nice?” As an extremely unpleasant person in my asks pointed out, he wasn't, and I had just thought he was because hours of staring at my screen making these recaps made my vision blurry. But whether he was on Very Nice or not, that exact fall-sideways-down move in Very Nice, so, that’s where Kum got the idea. Please don’t mistake me, I’m not criticizing. If people could never repeat a dance move ever, we’d have run out of dance moves ages ago. He found a good place to put that move and make it work with the overall routine. I just thought that was kind of interesting, to be able to trace it back like that, given that Very Nice has such a different feel overall.
(Also, I do welcome feedback if I make a mistake! Just be nice about it, is literally all I ask. If you've never said anything kind to me, please don't start our conversation by being mean. I feel like that's not too much to ask, right?)
I did notice Chen Jian Yu in the back having trouble getting up with the rest of the team after they all fell down. Aww. In fact, he was kind of behind the team a lot. Must be hard to try to keep up with this mostly very well trained team.
Ok, this bit in the middle, where Kum puts sunglasses on upside down and lifts up his shirt to reveal fake abs, I mean, it’s not my sense of humor, folks. Sorry.
Tumblr media
I bet a lot of people enjoyed it a lot and I appreciate his enthusiasm. If you really enjoyed this, feel free to message me. I assume some people did, right? I hope some people did. It’s just not for me, and I found it slightly irritating, the way I find a lot of what he does slightly irritating. That’s why I call him my little cousin -- he’s irritating but I kind of love him anyway, the same way I love my irritating little cousins. Like, can you NOT, you little shit? But also, come over here and let me give you a hug and $10 to spend on junk food-- don’t tell your mom.
I’m tender hearted and want to give everyone a passing vote. If I were forced to press B (disapprove) for one of them, it would have to be Chen Jian Yu, who as I noted, seemed to struggle with some of the choreo. But I’d press A for all of them if I were allowed, and overall, the team earns an A for approve from me.
The editing
The MNET editing is pretty kind -- it doesn’t focus too much on any mistakes, and mostly seems focused on making the four Korean members look good.
The judges applaud, and LipJ throws down her clipboard in approval. They call out 🍑Sunghwan the most, but also appreciate Kum’s performance.
The voting
We cut to backstage, where the boys all hope they come in first. Kum yells that he’s expecting first place, and 🍑Sunghwan says he expects that too, but it’s Sunghwan who comes in first, with 700 points.
Tumblr media
And poor Kum feels dumb for having thought he might win. Aww. We’ve all been there, sweetie! The audience voted for the sexiest one, not the funniest one. That’s how it be.
The team does a final cheer for itself, and Chen Jian Yu accidentally bumps Kum in the face.
Tumblr media
This is just not his day, huh?
They don’t tell us who scored the lowest on this team.
We end with 🍑Lee Seunghwan, who says that he expected Kum to win, but he’s thankful for coming in first. “I don’t know what the final result will be, but we made a great performance together. I’ll remember our team as a team that brought out miracles.” Aww, you really are a peach.
1:21:55 Zoom by Jessi
Huta introduces the next team, and they come out, looking real…
Tumblr media
…. “urban”?? Is that what we call this style?
God, the stylist noonas must hate them. I mean, can we all agree that idols shouldn’t wear shorts?
Mini rant:
Tumblr media
Poor Xiumin. Stylist noonas are like, “We’ll make Xiumin look awful so that the other boys will look better.”
Tumblr media
Obviously, Chen is one of the most beautiful men on the planet, but here from the waist down he looks like he’s made of assorted whole fruit shoved into a pair of opaque beige tights. It’s not his fault. WHAT WAS THIS? STYLIST NOONA, WHY? Why do you hate Chen? Why do you hate all of us?
Anyway.
Tumblr media
So, here is Keita’s team, dressed like “what if Peter Pan’s Lost Boys got lost in the year 1991” and they’re going to put on an amazing show because they’re a great team. Sorry, I should say, “they’re a great team, yo!”
I’ll remind you that these are the zoomers:
Trainee name (rank)   Star Level test / Challenge 1 /age final star level
Keita (8) Conduct Zero / Kill This Love- G /21 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Haruto (16) Glitch Mode / Love Me Right - G /18 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Ollie (28) Kick It - G / Hot Sauce - G /16 🚫
Wumuti (43) UN Village / Love Me Right - G /23 ⭐⭐
Park Hyunbeen (49) GBTB / Hot Sauce - K /17 ⭐⭐⭐
The judges are confident that Keita will carry the team.
Haruto tries trash talking, but he’s too cute for it to work.
Flashback time.
You may recall that they made Keita the leader, and gave the killing part to Hyunbeen, who wants it so desperately that it made me worried that the judges were going to tell his team to give the killing part to someone else. Let’s see if I was right!
Park Hyunbeen is working as hard as he can on his dancing, but knows he still might be lacking. At the big group evaluation in front of all the other trainees, everyone is excited to see that Hyunbeen has the killing part, and overall seem to really like the performance, especially Keita’s part. But then Hyunbeen goes blank and forget the lyrics and choreo -- oh no!
Afterward, the feedback is mostly good, but there are some harsh words for Hyunbeen, including this: “I don’t know why Hyunbeen has the killing part -- the other team members are much better.” Ouch! Oh no, is my premonition going to come to pass?
Tumblr media
Hyunbeen talks it over with Wumuti, saying that he is worried he’s dragging the team down. Wumuti is honest and says that he himself wants the killing part too, but asks, wouldn’t you be upset if you lost it? Hyunbeen is also mostly honest and says that it would upset him. I say “mostly honest” because the real truth is, I think, that it would devastate him. Hyunbeen isn’t really fully equipped to deal with this show, emotionally. I think most people aren’t, to be fair.
The next day, the boys talk in their training room about whether or not to replace Hyunbeen. Keita asks the team, “if anyone thinks the killing part should be replaced, raise your hand.” There’s a dumb momentary cutaway to the D-day stage, and we see that Hyunbeen is still the center. We go back to the meeting, and see that the boys trust Hyunbeen and want to let him keep working on it and keep the part. He’s grateful and vows to work harder.
The Performance
The lyrics I found online are:
Haruto (mostly in English)
Ay yo lookin at me? Probably wondering what's it like to be me
Just like all the wannabes, keep on talk talk
I’m your boss boss  Out of your league  Sorry you’re Not even close
Wumuti
Baby I was born with everything Do you know what “Know your place” means?
Don't hold back and call me Wumuti-ti-ti  It’s not that hard, then follow me
Keita
Back on the stage ready microphone check, Spit out a word and turn a page right away
Guess who's the best, It’s about time, I’ve been stuck studying since When I was 13
Never, You can’t, An unexpectedly talented guy, Without a break, I hit your ears good
Do or die, I’m abnormal when I hit the stage
Now everybody knows me, get out of the way
Ollie (mostly in English)
Get out of the way I’m from the Outer space, Just arrived, Want me out your face
I have no time to lose, so Listen close, Oops never mind Ollie Wonka gotta go
Park Hyunbeen
We gotta go and Kill this track, My braggadocious just gets bigger and bigger
I’m gonna change my Category, Heads, shoulders, knees, toes Swag check
Ooh geez, Everybody say cheese
Tumblr media
My take
Well, this is great. I watched it a bunch of times and enjoyed it every time. First, I just really enjoy listening to their version of the song. The original song has good bones to work with, the arrangement works, and their vocal performance really enhances the material -- so much so that I added their version to my current playlist. But it’s also fun to look at -- their choreo and stage vibe are energetic and fun and expressive, without being cheesy in a bad way. My one negative is that it really kind of grossed me out that Wumuti was eating a lollipop a lot of the time. Just this gross sticky thing in his mouth while he's singing and dancing, that he then throws on the stage where someone could step on it? No thanks. Yuck.
That aside, I liked listening to the song enough that I figured I might as well watch some of the fancams, and doing so really made a few things more obvious. One obvious deduction is that Ollie did not belong in 0 stars, ever. He must have had a breakdown or something the day of the final Star Level test and performed to an uncharacteristically low standard. (That, or he had serious issues with the Korean lyrics.) Seriously -- he’s such a natural on stage. He’s always having the best time and really executing well, with so much charm. I’m not sure he’s 100% there yet but he’s already a lot of fun to watch. On an unrelated note, I’m fairly confident at this point that Ollie speaks English better than he speaks any other language, unless someone can tell me I’m wrong on that. It really seems like English is the language he defaults to.
Keita’s performance is great, to the point that you might watch the fancam more than once, as long as you’re emotionally prepared to look at him in that fucking hat for almost 3 minutes. Haruto also -- he’s such a great dancer.
I really enjoyed their rapping too -- it helps that a lot of it is English, to be fair. They each brought a different personality to their rapping, and all of it was fun. I liked Haruto’s flow, I liked Wumuti’s sing-rap style, I liked Keita’s power and precision, I even liked Ollie’s cute talk-rapping for whatever reason. It actually kind of gave me Del Tha Funky Homosapien vibes. Stage presence wise, I think Hyunbeen was a little weaker than his teammates, but not in a way that made him or them look bad. I mean, the only thing that made them look bad was their outfits. Seriously, zoom in, camera guy so I can’t see their legs. Then zoom out so I don’t have to see Wumuti’s hat or offputting shiny thing on his lower lip.
The editing
When it comes to the performance itself, the MNET editing is extra irritating, but also extra kind -- we gets lots of reaction shots of the audience loving it and all the trainees dancing along, along with tons of unnecessary instant replays. They also don’t show Haruto’s awful ending fairy that’s on the youtube video, and that’s all for the good. The performance edit makes everyone look good, and that's rare on this show.
But I wish we knew more about how the boys actually made this track. The sung vocals are clearly re-recorded -- that's not a ding on Wumuti, who sang live as well and sounded great both live and pre-recorded. But when did they record this? To what extent were they involved in the production of the songs in general? How long were they in the studio, and who directed them? I also really want to know who actually wrote the lyrics. Did they each write their own, or did they help each other? I’m asking this now of this team but I should note that it applies to all 12 performances.
Also, to what extent were they involved in the staging? Did they pick out their outfits? their backgrounds? And whose idea was it to have those flashes of light on stage with the first two drumbeats, so that it looked like Hyunbeen had sort of "bounced" the other trainees up onto their feet? That had such an impact on the performance because they started so well and had some room to coast from there. So, whose idea was that? I can imagine a world where it was Keita’s idea, but it also could have been the producers’.
The pre-performance package -- the flashback of them preparing for the stage, etc -- is so focused on Hyunbeen that almost no time is spent on what the team actually did to prepare for the show. I know that the show hardly ever really tells us how any team actually prepared, but it bugs me.
The voting
You know, from the start of this series, the judges basically have never stopped talking about how good Keita 🔥is, and this is the first time I really, really got to see it. I really get it now. He’s as good as you would want an already debuted idol to be, and that’s saying a lot, especially on a show with a few other debuted idols who aren’t 100% up to his standard. So when they get their score, it’s not really a surprise to find out that Keita 🔥won with 736 points.
Tumblr media
It’s really easy to tell who cherished hopes of winning themselves, and who knew Keita was going to win.
It’s also not a surprise to find out that Park Hyunbeen is (a) the worst on the team but (b) also pretty high scoring, with 656, only 80 points lower than Keita (and only 44 points lower than Sunghwan from team Ggang). Hyunbeen was just “really great” on a team full of excellence. That’s reflected in the scores.
Speaking of scores, what’s up with finding out the last place score as well here? For the first group, they only showed the first place score, and here it was first and last places’s scores. I guess they had to show Hyunbeen’s score to finish his storyline.
I really wish they would tell us all the different scores, and I assume that the reason they don’t tell us all of them is that it doesn’t work with their narrative goals in some way. As an example, imagine that Wumuti got a score of 730. Imagine how it would look if we at home just watched that long segment about Park Hyunbeen and then Wumuti scored only a few points lower than the winner. Wouldn’t it be weird? Like, wait, since when was Wumuti important on this show?
Well, since Keita 🔥came in first and was the leader and all that, surely we’ll hear from him about how proud he is of his team, and how honored he is to come in first place, that kind of thing, right? Oh no, wait, we don’t. We just hear from Hyunbeen again. He’s proud of his performance and thanks his teammates.
To be clear, I don’t dislike Hyunbeen. Not at all! I think he’s a good performer and a sweet kid, and I think he has a ton of potential and I’m excited to see where he’ll be in a few years. I just don’t think he’s ready to debut, emotionally as much as anything else. Also, we could have been spending time with Ollie and Haruto and Wumuti and Keita 🔥too, getting to know them better, seeing how they felt about things. And we didn’t get to do that. It’s a bummer.
So, that’s the end of this part of the recap. Thanks for reading! The next one will be about Home and Love Killa!
And if you’re enjoying the recaps, please share them with other folks :) Thanks!

“Produce 101 Season 2” Reveals Vote-Based Rankings For Week 3
Tumblr media
Now that “Produce 101 Season 2” has aired its third episode, the rankings of contestants have been updated once again!
