"The only time I got the flu shot, I got a lot worse and I don't want to do that to my body anymore."

The coronavirus reached Navarrete’s family through her 17-year-old daughter, an athlete who resumed volleyball practice once the school gym was opened after the lockdown. Everyone avoided hospitalization. They were treated by the family doctor with antibiotics, ibuprofen and albuterol in inhalers.

"The virus gave me very bad headaches and I still struggle when walking, so I accepted the medicines. But I am definitely not getting vaccinated."

Like others her age, Navarette is at a higher risk of infection. Yet that’s not enough for her or her children to discount messages they’ve gotten via WhatsApp, complete with videos, that claim, for example, that vaccines are made with tissues of aborted fetuses.

Doubts and fears

Nationwide, people across demographic lines have lingering doubts about the new COVID-19 vaccines, according to a new survey by the Monmouth University Polling Institute.

The same population is more than four times as likely to be hospitalized and almost three times as likely to die of the virus. This is due, partly, to the large number of Latinos working in essential jobs that expose them to co-workers and the public. Other factors, like access to health care, also play a role.

Despite the higher risk, some Latinos remain uncertain about the safety of the new coronavirus vaccines.

An example: Navarrete in Texas, said she believes the myth that vaccines carry bits of an actual virus.

"There are other vaccines that have virus particles, including live virus particles," said Gerardo Capo, chief of hematology at Trinitas Comprehensive Cancer Center in New Jersey. "This vaccine is more modern. It has internal proteins of the virus that are not considered to cause an infection. It is impossible."

Vaccine hesitancy among Latinos in the U.S. is not necessarily an ideological issue or a belief in the anti-vaccine movement. "It has more to do with not having enough information or having inadequate information," said Nelly Salgado de Snyder, a researcher with the University of Texas at Austin.

Doubts exist even among Latino health care professionals.

Throughout the state, according to the KFF monitor, only 15% of vaccines have reached Hispanics, even though Latinos account for almost 40% of the population, 44% of coronavirus cases and almost half of COVID-19 deaths.

"We need to focus on equity as part of the COVID-19 vaccination effort," said Samantha Artiga, director of KFF's racial equity and health policy program. "It is important to monitor data by race and ethnicity to understand the experiences of the communities ... , who is receiving the vaccines, and who has been the most affected by the pandemic."

But it’s more than just reluctance. Studies into low flu vaccination rates among low-income Latino seniors show that being uninsured -- and even the lack of transportation to get to vaccination centers -- are huge barriers.

Experts suggest that no-cost COVID-19 vaccines, available to everyone regardless of health insurance or immigration status, could help close the gap, “if the information is available in linguistically appropriate materials and the concerns of people are clearly addressed. Immigrant families should be assured that their medical data is private and will not be used by federal agencies,” Artiga said.

Conspiracy theories

In addition to debunked conspiracy theories that Pfizer and Moderna vaccines can alter DNA, or contain microchips implanted by Bill Gates to monitor people with 5G technology, other rumors specific to the Latino community have spread through social media.

“The viral disinformation includes anonymous voice messages on WhatsApp that say that since Trump does not like Mexicans and built the wall, he wants to vaccinate us so we cannot have more children, or that the vaccine is a poison for those of us who are here undocumented, that it is a way to get rid of us,” Salgado de Snyder said.

She suggested one possible reason such disinformation is embraced: “People believe it because they don't have the level of education or the institutional support to confirm this information that they hear from other Latinos. Many of them do not speak English and most of the scientific information is not available in Spanish,” she said.

Salgado de Snyder is the co-author of the study, “Exploring Why Adult Mexican Males Do Not Get Vaccinated: Implications for COVID-19 Preventive Actions,” conducted by the Migrant Clinicians Network and published last September.

Data was collected in 2019 at the Ventanilla de Salud at the Mexican Consulate in Austin. Before the pandemic, the clinic offered free vaccines against maladies like influenza, tetanus, hepatitis A and B, and human papilloma, in association with Austin Public Health.

Some 400 patients gave researchers a variety of reasons for not getting vaccinated, including lack of time or money, fear of injections and of potential side effects, insufficient information or motivation, and the perception that they are healthy and don’t need inoculation.

"While women are more familiar with the health system because in Mexico there is a universal voluntary and free vaccination program, men have the mistaken belief that vaccines are the cure for a problem, they do not see (a vaccination) as a preventive tool," Salgado de Snyder said.

“As breadwinners, they do not want to miss a day of work to go to get vaccinated,” she added. “That is why our recommendations in times of COVID are that through some type of mobile clinic, employers offer vaccines in workplaces such as construction companies or meatpacking plants,” she said.

María del Rosario Cadena remembers that during her childhood in Tampico, in Mexico’s Tamaulipas state, she received vaccines against hepatitis and polio without any side effects. But she is "very suspicious" about the COVID-19 vaccines that seem to have been developed and approved so quickly.

If I had difficulty breathing then to call an Ambulance but otherwise, I should stay calm and PKD will be contacting me within 2-4 days to let me know what’s next as they’re overwhelmed with cases at the moment. So, that was Day 1. I didn’t get a single call from anyone till I called PKD HQ and was given the number to PKD Lembah Pantai on Day 13.

FUN FACT: I called various PKD numbers throughout my quarantine period and nobody answered. No body called me for contact tracing till I was cleared. Someone called me on Day 18 to ask if I had informed my contacts and for some weird reason, kept asking how did I get food sent to me rather than requesting for a full list of my location etc.

5. How to get my Letter of Release from KKM?

I kept stalking PKD Lembah Pantai with calls and messages on Day 14 till they gave me an appointment at Klinik Kesihatan Tanglin in Bukit Aman. I was told to come in on Day 15 at 9am. It was a queue of about 20 people or so before me, all appropriately distanced, masked and sanitized (I hope). They got everyone to go in 5 pax at a time to collect our letters. Everyone in front of me didn’t have a band on the wrist either. There was no way to tell we were COVID-19 patients really. There was a doctor who had our release slips with pre-printed stickers of our name and IC number stuck on it. It was quick and a frighteningly easy process. She asked for my name and which date I had tested positive. Then asked if I have any symptoms and took my word for it and signed off and stamped a very questionable hand written paper. That was it. I was clear and could be out and about but not before she warned me that I could always get it again so please mask up and sanitize as if your life depends on it!

FUN FACT: I was in and out within 30 minutes. The nurse had said that no walk-ins were allowed and you can only collect your release letter if you’ve been given an appointment. The new rule is to let you out of quarantine after Day 10 as they consider you to not be infectious anymore. No testing was done.

6. How to be a responsible COVID-19 patient?

ü DO YOUR OWN CONTACT TRACING. Write down a list of all your whereabouts for the last 10 days and people you have met. Let them know even if you’re sure that you only got infected after meeting them. You can never tell the origins of the infection so accurately when it comes to this virus and it’s your responsibility to tell them. Most of my contacts thankfully did a test themselves and came out negative and the rest continued to stay home under quarantine as well just in case.

ü If you’re staying in a Condo, let your management know so that they can arrange for the appropriate sanitization of the area.

ü Get your food/groceries/essentials delivered to your door step and when you’re putting your rubbish out, ensure you sanitize the bin and bag so that it’s safe for those who carry your trash out. My condo management was exceptional and the guards dropped off my items at my doorstep until I was cleared by KKM.

ü Get someone to drop off your essential medicines so that you’re covered for 14 days.

ü Do your own temperature reading daily and take notes on your symptoms so that if it becomes worse and you call 911, you have a proper history to give them. I had my best friend send me a goodie bag of vitamins, Dettol sprays and thermometer and trust me, I have never been more thankful!

ü Spray your room and bathroom every morning and evening especially your beds. I sprayed my bathroom every time I used it and that’s probably me just being OCD.

ü If you’re in a shared space, wear a mask at all times and don’t share your meals or drinks and utensils with others.

ü Take your Vitamin C like your life depends on it and fresh fruit/vege juices really help! I had amazing friends who sent me immune boosters/daily fresh juices/homecooked meals and to be honest, they all just helped me mentally and physically because it can be really hard being all alone without human touch for 14 days straight. No amount of Netflix and chill will make it better so having a good support system to check in on you is just as important.

ü Once you’re out of quarantine, sanitize your entire home/room. Sanitize and wash your sheets and clothes.

Disclaimer: As you can see, I had a very good support system around me and I was also blessed to not have severe symptoms. This may not be the case for most people so don’t be afraid to ask for help or call 999 in case of an emergency. Please don’t wait till it becomes worse.

This is also in no way a jibe to our Healthcare Workers but instead one to our government. I can’t blame PKD or KKM entirely for delays and lack of enthusiasm on their part because lets face it, they are OVERWHELMED. How did we NOT see this coming? We were doing so well and then the elections in Sabah happened and wham bam! The flood gates were opened. What measures did the government take to ensure our healthcare team had a good support system? Did they bother to employ more Admin Staffs to cope with the rise of the COVID-19 cases? Could they have had a Call Centre set up for this purposes only? Could the MySejahtera app been done better? Only 2 weeks ago did they finally allow those with cases to report via the app. This is the 21st century where I can get my food delivered to me with one single app and yet I cannot believe that we have not invested enough into our healthcare system. You’re overworking the front liner’s who are in turn burning out and probably don’t have a choice but to find the fastest way to do the job. In turn, an irresponsible person who has been tested positive and hasn’t gotten a call from PKD and doesn’t have a band either to show for it will be out and about infecting others and wa-laa! We can be hitting the sweet 5k spot soon with or without MCO. So please get off your high horses and put your politics aside to fix this for the love of Nasi Lemak and Dim Sum!

Silly Pleasures-Chapter 7

*I TOLD YOU IT WOULD COME TODAY!!!!* Love the feedback folks, keep coming with it. This one is slightly shorter because the next chapter is following behind relatively quickly. Also, tell me how I already have smut scenes written before the chapters have even come to fruition:)

I had a cold.

Of all the days to start having mucus fall from my nose, of course it was the day I asked Harry to come with me to the museum. I started to feel odd the night before, so when I woke in the morning barely able to breathe, it was not too much of a surprise. Even though I felt terribly icky, cancelling on Harry was not an option. It was not an option for two reasons; one being that he called me out about it and I could not back down and two, I really did want to hang out with him again. Our interactions were often so limited to parties and within large groups of people, I wanted to see what would happen when all of that went away. It was a test to see if we would have that much in common when the alcohol was out of reach.

When Harry arrived outside of my flat at 1pm sharp, he took one look at my glossy eyes and rubbed raw nose and cringed.

“Oh no! Are you poorly?” Harry asked in his hypnotizing accent. I shook my head defiantly, willing myself to ignore the discomfort even though it was present.

“No, no, no,” I croaked, albeit comically as I was so not well. “I’ve got my vitamin C tablets and tissues at the ready,” I said all while holding both up proudly. With a wet sniffle, I said confidently, “Let’s go see a replica of the statue of David!” My last few words came out in a rasp like I had binged on cigarettes all morning. Harry gave me a skeptical glance.

“If you want to do this another day, it’s okay. I don’t want you to be in pain the entire time.” 

“No Harry, I’m fine,” I drawled out. “I invited you anyways because I wanted to do this.”

“Ooh, so you wanted this?” he asks with a small smirk, wiggling his thin hips in the process. I rolled my eyes and gently shoved his shoulder.

“C’mon you twat, let’s see what school groups we disrupt today.” I closed my front door behind me and walked down the front steps onto the pavement, forcing a bounce in my step. I started to make my way towards the Tube station when Harry grabbed my arm gently.

“Where do you think you’re going?” he questioned slyly. I quirked my left eyebrow up, confused. “My car is this way,” he said, pointing in the opposite direction.

“Ah, certainly. I guess the Tube may be pushing it, I can tell you’re delicate.”

“Ah fuck off.”

I felt a pleasant blush rise to my cheeks that I could tell he noticed, but did not speak on.

Harry and I looked quite the pair in the elegant museum. We stood amongst sculptures and the paintings of Raphael while both cloaked in oversized black hoodies. Harry’s outfit was purely for disguise, while mine was used to further wallow in my grime. Snot residue would not be too obvious on the black material.

The museum was sparsely populated, thankfully. I did not want Harry to be hounded, but I too had yet to feel the effects of being near him. As far as I knew it, there were no pictures of us on the Internet. I cannot deny that I liked the anonymity.

Most of our visit was silent, enjoying the art and design peacefully. Sometimes things do not need to be said. I realized after thirty minutes that I enjoyed being with him in our silence. I felt like I was sat in my favorite bookstore, enjoying the stillness. Our conversation slowly picked up around the costume collection.

“I would have this right at my front door,” I told Harry in awe.

“Hm, I guess I haven’t caught up on my home design skills. Didn’t know severed heads were the new garden gnome.”

“Psh, this is hardly a severed head, Harry. Honestly, Frankenstein’s monster was pieced together limb by limb. He’s just misplaced the bottom half.” Harry hums in amused acknowledgement. I was enamored with the bust of Frankenstein’s monster from the Bride of Frankenstein. Having permanent Halloween decorations was always something I desired, even though it could be quite off-putting to guests.

“Now, this is what I want!” Harry spoke loudly, gesturing to a bright and feathered costume in the corner, formerly worn by Rocketman himself. His tone startled me.

“Harry keep your voice down,” I whisper-scolded, attempting to hold back the giggle tickling my throat.

“Jeanie, no one is around us.” I chose to ignore the nickname.

“Well…still,” I pouted nonsensically, even stomping my right foot down slightly. There really was no one around us, we had not seen another group or couple for at least 15 minutes. However, it went against every fiber of my being to be loud in a place that was typically reserved for quiet introspection. Lost in my worries that a museum attendant would pop down from the ceiling and scold us, I did not notice for a few long beats that Harry was staring intently at my face. When I recognized what he was doing, my first reaction was to feel self-conscious. “What? Do I have something on my face?” I asked, alarmed and nervous that some dried booger on my face was terrifying Harry.

“No, no. Just staring.”

“Well,” I paused and then cleared my throat. It was then that I remembered that I had a heartbeat. To disengage from the interaction, I walked towards Sir Elton’s costume, leaving him quickly in my wake. I heard Harry mutter an ‘alright’ behind me. “You would look good in this,” I told him in an attempt to move the conversation swiftly along, picturing Harry in all his feathered wonder.

“I think I would too.”

I rolled my eyes and shoved Harry jokingly, calling out his playful arrogance. It seemed that was all that I was doing these days, shoving and touching Harry as if I failed to age past 5. He usually did not respond to my spirited jabs, but this time must have been the exception. In retaliation, Harry decided to poke me firmly in the ribs. I could tell it was meant to make me laugh, but I don’t Harry was expecting the squeal that passed my lips to be in that particular octave. It went against my entire being to be that loud in this space.

“Oh shit! Did I hurt you?” Harry asked frantically. The look in his eyes told me that he instantly regretted touching my stomach. My immediate shock wore off and my cheeks began to redden.

“No, but I’m extremely ticklish,” I responded to put him at ease. His look of concern transformed into a devilish smirk. I knew what he was thinking. “Don’t you fucking dare!”

Harry started to stalk towards me with a mischievous smirk on his face. I gave a warning look in response, raising my eyebrows to appear stern. The space between us closed slowly, but eventually Harry was close enough for his fingers to brush across my ribs again. I decided, at that point, to shriek and run away-all decorum forgotten on my part. I heard Harry’s loud laugh behind me as he began to chase me around the room. My choked laughter and his heavy breathing echoed off the white walls in the empty space.

Our chase concluded with a stand-off. I was left facing Harry, only a Les Paul guitar from the 1960s separated us. With nowhere left to go and my breath coming out in heavy pants due to my clogged nostrils, I held up my palms in surrender and squeezed my eyes shut. Not seeing the tickle attack would surely lessen its intensity in my eyes. I heard Harry’s footsteps round the guitar and felt his presence in front of me. The seconds ticked by and he still did not touch me. I cracked open my eyes to find him just staring again.

“What now?” I asked softly.

He opened his mouth to respond, but closed it again before any words could come out. He dug around in his pocket and pulled out a squished tissue. Then, he leaned forward and planted his lips on my cheek. His lips were soft on my freckled skin and I could feel the residue of his watermelon lip balm. I held my breath during the entire interaction. I said a prayer at that moment and thanked Zeus that the skin on faces did not form goosebumps.

“Your nose started to bleed,” he told me as he pulled back. I mumbled a ‘shit’ and grabbed the tissue quickly from his hand.

“I have weak blood vessels in my nose, especially when I’m all sick and worked up,” I replied, to explain my condition. His cheeks started to turn a rosy shade of pink. I cocked my head slightly to the side, confused at his reaction to my words. I realized only after we were walking out of the museum, while the hand not blotting my nose brushed lightly against his, that I told him he made me worked up. When I initially said it, I was convinced it was in reference to being tired from running around the room. I guess Harry knew me better than I thought he did.

* “Could you take a picture of me?” I asked Harry as we sat inside a tiny, but bright ramen restaurant. He nodded and took my phone out of my hand. My face was free of nostril blood and the lighting in the restaurant was low enough to hide the dry patches around my nose. I made sure to collect the noodles perfectly on the chopsticks and exaggerate my face in amazement at the food. I’m sure Harry thought I was going to smile cutely for the camera. He chuckled at my attempt at food porn, simply saying ‘fabulous’ as he handed my phone back to me.

“This is one of my favorite places, but I don’t think I’ve posted a picture here yet,” I told him.

“You have an Instagram?” he questioned. I nodded and gave it to him, too distracted by my delicious food to preface that my Instagram came with a warning. I heard a deep and slightly uncomfortable “Whoa,” from Harry, which caused me to look up perplexed. He was silent for a few moments before he said, “Your hair is different here.” He flipped his phone around to show me the photo in question. My eyes widen considerably at the image. The ramen on my chopsticks fell unceremoniously down to my bowl with a plop. I cleared my throat awkwardly.

“I totally forgot I posted that,” I mumbled. The photo was a bit brutal to look at in front of the boy I realized, only hours ago, that I had a crush on. In the photo, I was showing off my straightened hair, deicing on a different look that day than my usual dark waves. However, I showed off my straight hair only in a hot pink lace thong. To make it even more unsafe for work, I was on all fours, taking the photo in the obnoxious mirror propped up in my bedroom. The long dark strands of my hair perfectly covered my breasts in the photo. Harry still stared at me instead of the half-nude image on his phone, no doubt finding my reaction amusing. I decided it was best to own it, I was the one that posted it proudly after all. “Welp, my ass looks great too.”

“That it does.” I forced my eyes to remain unblinking.

“I don’t think it was very gentlemanly of you to agree with me.”

“I completely disagree. You are complimenting yourself and I am simply agreeing with you. We support the same thing here.”

“Support what? Showing my ass off to random people?”

“If that’s what you want to do, then yea.”

I did not say anything for a few moments, letting Harry’s words sink in.

“Not too many people say things like that, it’s very kind of you,” I told him. My voice was my softer sounding than I really wanted it to be. My lips curled into a soft smile and I took as deep a breath as I could in my current state. “That’s what I do for a living.” I forced a light chuckle at the end of my sentence to appear blasé.

Harry nodded gently, leaning his chin on top of his right arm balancing on the table. I could see a dimple begin to indent his skin. He thought for a moment before speaking.

“So, would I be correct in saying that this photo is on brand for you?” he asked.

I nodded, matching Harry’s posture across the table. He made a big show of his next action. Turning his phone around to me once again, he dramatically pressed the follow button on my profile. “Ta-da!” he said loudly, “I look forward to more nudes!”

I choked on the phlegm in my throat and my nose started to bleed again.
