Flowers and Fake Marble: How TV Production Designers Create the Past (The New York Times)
“I always say that if there were a marble Olympics, our team would definitely take the gold,” Bob Shaw bragged.
Shaw, the Emmy-winning production designer of the HBO drama “The Gilded Age,” was discussing the painstaking effort and maddening attention to detail that goes into painting a wooden column so that the camera can’t help but read it as stone. The scenic artists of “The Gilded Age” can paint a half-dozen distinct marble varieties. To pause at nearly any frame of the show is to marvel at the meticulous mix of authentic materials and brilliant fakes. Look closely at the candelabras, for example: They are fitted with fire-safe LEDs hooked to wavering filaments that substitute for open flame.
Though production design is often seen as a mere backdrop to the action, the scenery, furnishings, finishes and props have their own stories to tell. And these stories are often especially intricate in period dramas, in which a need for accuracy must accommodate narrative demands and the constraints of a show’s budget.
[...]
Flowers were not enough.
In the first season of “The Gilded Age,” the home of Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon), the wife of a railroad magnate (Morgan Spector), was garlanded with fields of flowers for each social event. So even though the script for the first episode of Season 2, which premieres on HBO on Oct. 29, described the Russell home as resplendent with flowers, Shaw knew he had to do more.
In a scene at the close of the episode, Bertha, a patron of the nascent Metropolitan Opera, arranges a surprise performance of a song from Gounod’s “Faust” by the Swedish soprano Christine Nilsson. While her guests are dining, her sumptuous staircase is transformed into Marguerite’s garden. There are flowers, yes, a mix of real and artificial ones, garlanding the railings. But above the staircase are several panels of hand-painted Italian scenery, as would have been seen in the opera houses of the day.
“It was a challenge to have it be beautiful and evocative and tasteful and not be cute,” Shaw said. “It conveys that Bertha goes to extremes beyond what anyone could imagine to get what she wants.”
The result is ostentatious but still gorgeous. This is a line that Shaw and his team often walk, on lush carpeting. “The Gilded Age” dramatizes the conflict between new money, like the Russells, and old money, like their near neighbors, Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) and Ada Brook (Cynthia Nixon). The excesses of the new money crowd gave the Gilded Age its name, but whether in the studio or filming on location in various historic homes, Shaw balances lavishness with restraint.
“In all of the houses that we did, we had to back off a little bit from the 100 percent period look,” Shaw said. “Because it’s too much visual information for modern eyes.” He is careful to avoid using the set decoration, a combination of period furniture and scenic art, to judge or insult the characters.
“They’re more complex,” he said. “They’re not simply out to say, ‘Anything you can have I can have bigger.’”

Could you give me some recommendations of whatever has Nadao Bangkok produced? sounds like it was a good studio :(
I definitely can! nadao has produced a lot if not MOST of my favorite thai dramas, so that's why I'm fucking heartbroken over this, they also put a lot more budget into their series so it was really quality over quantity for them, which is very rare for thai production companies :((( I made a full video on the company here!
I told sunset about you
Tumblr media
so I scream about this show all the time bc I truly consider it the one & only perfect bl show ever produced. in terms of production, execution & writing, this one is simply above every other show, it's so tightly run & well-made you sometimes ask yourself how they did it. the visuals are insanely gorgeous, the acting performances some of the best I've ever seen in a thai drama, the characters are super endearing, the relationship is beautiful & the queer rep??? was so important! (don’t watch the sequel though)
project s: skate our souls
Tumblr media
another 10/10 show for me, bc it legitimately changed my life. this show is just as gorgeous aesthetically, well-written, incredibly acted, it tackles the topic of depression in a raw & imperfect way like I have personally never seen before, it has the topic of found family which will forever be my fave... this show is everything to me. it's like one of my favorite things ever. I couldn't recommend it more!
project s: side by side
Tumblr media
once again, what characterized nadao was the insane quality of their shows, and this one is not an exception either. again it tackles the topic of mental illness that’s not very represented, it has SUCH a compelling world-building like the two previous shows as well, the acting performance is also one of the very best I’ve seen, the characters are all so precious, and this is just... A FUCKING GOOD SHOW!
in family we trust
Tumblr media
so in family we trust is my favorite lakorn (thai soap operas that have between 12 & 30 eps, air 2 to 3 times a week and are generally geared towards an older thai audience), probably bc it doesn’t do basically anything like a lakorn lol. it’s very well shot, has a very suspensful & entertaining story, the acting performances are all great as always... and it just goes further than any other lakorn I’ve seen. it’s just really, really good, and you will absolutely hold your breath if you watch this one!
great men academy
Tumblr media
this show was all the rage back in 2019, and for good reasons! once again, nadao said BUDGET & created an entire new world for this show! the story is very cute & entertaining while still having deeper storylines, the acting is great, the characters are adorable especially tangmo the pansexual icon, the chemistry amazing & this is just SUCH a good time! I don’t think you can watch this show & dislike it :)
I hate you, I love you
Tumblr media
my favorite thing about nadao is that they really make amazing shorter series, and this is one of them! this is a murder mystery with priviledged teens who all betray each other, and it’s very well executed! for me it’s such an underrated thai drama that everyone should watch bc it practically watches itself with how entertaining it is!
blackout
Tumblr media
a more recent series that deals with VERY heavy topics, but is truly done so expertly I was blown away. it’s a vertical show which really gives it a video game & escape game vibe, the shots are all GORGEOUS, the sound & set design are absolutely the best I’ve ever seen if I’m honest, the acting is great, and it’s again a very short & entertaining show that leaves a lot to think about. it’s not for the faint of the heart, but I’d really recommend it bc it’s so underrated & deserved so much better!
hormones
Tumblr media
and finally, the first nadao show ever & one of its most iconic, hormones. hormones is for me THE classic teen thai drama that you need to watch alongside love sick & grean house, and it was an absolutely groundbreaking drama for the time, that launched the careers of most of its actors who are still thriving today! but apart its historic side, this is a genuinely groundbreaking show with queer characters (and not only men for once!), female characters that finally get the spotlight, sexual content, etc. that tackles a lot of important topics, all of that wrapped in a very endearing execution. this is definitely a show that every thai drama fan should watch!

THE CHROMATICA BALL TOUR FASHION CREDITS
It feels like forever since she announced it, but Lady Gaga finally launched her highly anticipated “The Chromatica Ball” stadium summer world tour! The setlist was divided into five acts, opening with a trio of fan favorites.
Fashion director Nicola Formichetti made sure that fans got a visual treat, not only musically. Styling by power-duo Sandra Amador and Tom Eerebout with assistance by Hunter Clem. Hair by Frederic Aspiras and glam by Sarah Tanno-Stewart using Haus Laboratories.
Tumblr media
Gaga opened the tour singing her biggest hits inside of a transformer meets sarcophagus creation custom designed by Gareth Pugh, who also made her grey structured sculpturesque cocoon armor with tonal "stitching", leather puff-sleeve top and belted leather paper-bag trousers, based on his Fall/Winter 2018 collection.
Underneath, she wore a custom Atsuko Kudo Joy matte silver sleeveless latex bodysuit with mock neck. You’ll see another one later in this post!
Her dancers all wear bespoke HUGO BOSS grey tailored looks.
Tumblr media
A bunch of new names worked on the fashion of this tour. Boyd Baten’s Barcelona-based “futuristic style brand” Divamp Couture being one of them! They created these polished and embossed brutalism-inspired Monoblocks.
Tumblr media
Mother Monster sang "Alice" while sporting this otherworldly custom Topo Studio NY Muscle Detail sequined red sheer organza and liquid silk lamé ripped and ruched trapunto gown with dramatic shoulders.
Underneath, she revealed this sickening custom Vex Clothing x Yummy Gummy Latex blood-inspired sleeveless latex mock neck bodysuit which is part of their "Vol. 22" collection.
The insane PVC pipe metal & molded leather choker is part of a custom stage look designer Assaad Awad originally created for her "Enigma" Vegas residency!
Tumblr media
Her opera-length fingerless black leather gloves are the Fergie by Paula Rowan.
Tumblr media
Throughout the show, Gaga danced around in these custom Haus of Gaga over-the-knee black leather combat boots.
Tumblr media
Her red quilted puff shoulder jacket, she added during “Monster”, is from Iran-born Germany-based emerging designer AZIZ...
Tumblr media
...which she combined with her favorite Komono x Tom Eerebout M Whiskey Coke sunglasses.
Tumblr media
For the second segment of the show, LG explored her fetishgear side by rocking this bondage-inspired black PVC spike shoulder top with harness-style buckles, based on the Eclipse top by SINRGY! Also by them: her elbow pad and fingerless neoprene gloves with PVC panels.
The deconstructed, asymmetrical stretch jersey bodysuit and trousers, both featuring PVC panels, are fruit of a collaboration between her sister's label Topo Studio NY and longtime collaborator Muto-Little Costumes.
Tumblr media
She crowned the look with a custom Noel Stewart black PVC biker cap – which gives me incredible "The Fame" era vibes!
Tumblr media
Next, LG rocked a custom Alexander McQueen molten metallic gold moiré tromp l'œil double lapel cropped tailored blazer, sleeveless shirt and wide-legged trousers!
Another fan favorite look was the stunning Topo Studio NY creation she whipped out for "Free Woman" — clearly a nod to Ballroom culture (Paris is Burning, anyone?).
The extravagant coat is hand-crafted from pleated gold lamé and features avant-garde sleeves, layered pagoda shoulders and a stand-up collar.
Tumblr media
Later, she added this bespoke Philip Treacy lobster claw-inspired golden headpiece.
Tumblr media
For the dancers, Perry Meek created 16 gold & white looks in only 5 days while Lara Jensen made a dozen of fabulous gold headpieces in the shapes of wings, orbs and orbits.
Tumblr media
While playing her tree piano, Gaga changed into a Atsuko Kudo Joy sleeveless black latex mock neck bodysuit.
She also brought back her custom Xtian de Medici Chromataphore helmet headpiece constructed from therman plastics, vinyl and various pigments he developed for the color. Xtian used a special high tech pigment similar to the pigment that gives butterflies their color!
Tumblr media
For her next dates, she whipped out this purple & black latex bodysuit with high collar and jet crystal embellishments that was custom-made for her by Dead Lotus Couture.
Tumblr media
Gaga then danced to "Stupid Love" and "Rain on Me" wearing Alexander McQueen Resort 2023 eyelet-embellished cropped leather biker jacket and crystal embroidered long laser-cut harness.
Tumblr media
For “Hold my Hand”, she replaced the previous jacket with an archival KTZ Fall/Winter 2011 deconstructed leather biker jacket. She had the shoulder lapels of hers encrusted with jet crystals.
Tumblr media
Lastly, she wore her Gary Fay Creations album cover-worn Tree bone-shaped claw hand, with each part of the fingers moving individually.

THE FREDDIE MERCURY PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
THE FREDDIE MERCURY PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
An exhibition featuring over 100 photographs of Freddie Mercury went on show at the Royal Albert Hall last week, to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the death of the Queen frontman. The display is drawn from both private and public collections and spans the singer’s life from his infancy in Zanzibar to his final, formal portrait, taken during his battle against Aids. The exhibition is free of charge, and is open until 11th December.
Turn to the feature elsewhere in this issue for more details, plus an exclusive selection of images from the show.
QUEEN GIVE US THE EYE
Queen Multimedia, in conjunction with Electronic Arts, have announced the launch of “The Eye”, an interactive, action-adventure computer game, based on the music and imagery of the band.
The game will be available in March 1997 as a five-CD-ROM set compatible with IBM PCs. Ninety minutes of original and remixed versions of Queen’s best-known songs have been aligned to “motion captured characters and real-time facial animatio”.
“ ‘Queen — The Eye’ will be the first music game of its kind,” claims Tim Massey of Destination Design, who created the package. “This resourceful vision makes the integration of Queen’s timeless appeal with the revolutionary audio and visual gaming technology a ‘must have’ product.”
Expect a flurry of promotional and advertising initiatives to tie in with the release of the game, including a ‘making-of’ TV documentary; a worldwide syndicated radio special; and at least three associated books, to be published by Boxtree. A price for “Queen — The Eye" has yet to be fixed, although the manufacturers estimate it will be in the region of £40.
STATUESQUE MERCURY
On 25th November, five years after the untimely death of Freddie Mercury, a 9ft bronze statue of the late, great singer was unveiled at the waterfront at Lake Geneva, Montreux, Switzerland, near to Mountain Studios where Queen recorded their final album, “Made In Heaven”. The statue was paid for by Freddie’s family and friends, and the patch of land on which it stands was donated by the commune of Montreux, who got to know Freddie during his final years.
The statue is the work of Czech sculptor Irene Sedliek, a fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and a memory of the Society of Portrait Sculptors. The memorial was unveiled by opera star Montserrat Caballe, with whom Freddie recorded his “Barcelona” theme tune to the 1988 Olympic Games.
WIENER WILL ROCK YOU
Following screenings at film festivals in Venice, Cannes and London earlier this year, Queen’s “Made In Heaven: The Films”, is now available on a compilation video, via independent label Wienerworld, priced £10.99. Without Freddie as Queen's focal point, the band bypassed the traditional rock video medium and opted instead to commission eight short films from young directors via the British Film Institute.
“Queen were the pioneers of the promo and have reinvented it on many occasions. The project offered the opportunity to think hard about what has happened to the music promo, and how to invigorate a more dynamic relationship between pictures and sound,” said executive producer and head of the BFI Film Division Ben Gibson. “l think the results, which are films in their own right, vindicate everyone’s belief that the project has crossed new boundaries on short film-making.”
EURO GA GA
“Queen Dance Traxx 1” is a new album featuring sixteen Europop cover versions of songs made famous by pop's most flamboyant foursome. Issued on the Continent in October and in January in the U.K., the CD features dancefloor-orientated reworkings of Queen anthems like “We Will Rock You” (by Interactive), “Under Pressure” (by Culture Beat), “l Was Born To Love You” (by World's Apart) and “The Invisible Man” (by Scatman John).
“The first time I heard ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ I stopped what I was doing and just listened,” reports the Scatman. “As a jazz artist at the time, I knew I was hearing something special. Freddie Mercury’s knowledge of music, coupled with his vision, was clearly understood by the band… and there was a development and execution of that understanding that created music I felt was of genius. With this project, we’re aiming to bring a new life to the music of a past generation with sensitivity, with taste and with creativity.”
LASERS LEAD THE WAY
Two other Queen films, the “Champions Of The World” documentary and “The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert”, have just been issued on Laser Disc, via Pioneer. The Laser Disc is the principal video format in the States, and is growing in Europe. The manufactures of these 12" diameter, double-sided discs claim digital sound and broadcast-quality pictures, plus the added bonus of compact disc-style indexing. On music titles this means you can key into favourite tracks without having to bother with out-moded ideas like fast-forward and rewind.
“Champions Of The World” is priced £24.99, while the double-disc “The Freddie Mercury Tribute” costs £34.99. Forthcoming Queen Laser Disc releases include “Greatest Hits 1 & 2” and “Wembley”.
FLASH!
THE FREDDIE MERCURY PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
ANDY DAVIS INTRODUCES A NEW VISUAL CELEBRATION OF QUEEN’S MUCH MISSED FRONTMAN
It’s now five years since the rock music world learned of the tragic death of Freddie Mercury. In that time, the surviving members of the band have paid tribute to him by completing and releasing the final album they recorded together, “Made In Heaven”, and have sanctioned a whole host of projects by which fans can remember Freddie and the group he fronted with such astonishing showmanship for twenty years.
Now, to mark the fifth anniversary of his death, and to celebrate his extraordinary life, an exhibition featuring some of the best photographs of Freddie Mercury has just opened at the Royal Albert Hall. Sponsored by EMI Music, the exhibition was conceived by Queen’s manager Jim Beach, and is being put together under the aegis Of Freddie’s publishing company, Mercury Songs. One of its principal aims is to raise both funds and awareness for the Mercury Phoenix Trust, the Aids support charity established in Freddie’s name in the wake of his death. (To date, the Trust has raised around £4 million.)
The choice of venue — the circular corridor which runs around the inside perimeter of the Royal Albert Hall — is both unusual and prestigious, as explained by the exhibition’s curator, Richard Gray, who as Queen’s art director, has been the man behind all the band’s artwork for the last ten years.
“It took a long time to figure that the Royal Albert Hall might be the venue,” he reveals. “Exhibitions like this are usually something they don’t get involved with. But we wanted people to have access to the show without getting the feeling you can get, for example, in some art galleries, where the door has to be unlocked for you before you can even go in. The exhibition is free of charge, but there will be collection boxes on the site, and we hope that people will be generous!”
CUTE
The exhibition features over 100 colour and black-and-white images spanning Freddie’s life, from cute baby photos of the infant Farookh Bulsara just a few months old in Zanzibar to his final, formal portrait, taken by Richard Gray for “Greatest Hits II” in 1991. Each photograph has been enlarged to 20” by 16”, and has been carefully retouched where appropriate, and then finished using the most sophisticated imaging techniques available. In all, the show took over a year to complete.
“The big jump came when we were granted access to Freddie’s parents and his photo albums,” reveals Richard. “Initially, Freddie’s parents weren’t sure whether they wanted to open up their family albums, but once they’d made that decision they were happy for us to continue.” Because ofhis family’s co-operation, fans now have a rare opportunity to glimpse the man, the child even, behind the Mercury persona which Freddie spent much of his life cultivating. But what a persona!
Among the pictures Brian May contributed from his personal collection are a series of stereo photographs of Freddie taken the late 70s and early 80s. “Stereo cameras take two he shots of the same image and turn them into 3-D,” explains Richard. “They’re quite amazing. There are five stereo pictures on show in a special viewer, all of which feature Queen live on stage. Brian would lend his stereo camera to photographers covering the concerts, and there are others by David Burder, an expert in 3-D photography, who also happens to be a friend of Brian’s. He helped me get the shots together.”
Among the other images on show are pictures of Freddie at Ealing Art College in the late 60s, dozens of stills of him in Queen throughout the 70s and 80s, and a handful of Polaroids of the lakefront view at Montreux, which Freddie sent home to his parents. “It’s more the case of telling a story than just a photographic exhibition,” maintains Richard Gray. “There are lots of photos which you'll recognise, but others, probably about 25%, which have never been seen before.”
Another highlight for fans will be the only U.K. showing of the three-foot high plaster model which sculptress Irene Sedliek used for her statue of Freddie, recently erected in Montreux, Switzerland, and which appeared on the cover of “Made In Heaven” album. A smaller version of the statue, measuring about 12” in height, will be included in the exhibition when it travels abroad next year.
After a break for Christmas, the exhibition will move to the National Theatre in Paris for two weeks in January, followed by a season at the Cologne Philharmonie in Germany. Thereafter, it will undertake a two-year world tour, and there are plans for it to return home sometime in the near future, where it will be staged in various provincial British cities. Commemorative tie-in merchandising, including a set of six postcards, a poster, T-shirt, and a 20-page programme, is on sale at the exhibition, all profits from which will go to the Mercury Phoenix Trust.
All photographs reproduced by kind permission of Mercury Songs Ltd.
The Freddie Mercury Photographic Exhibition is open from 10.00am to 1.00pm until 11th December 1996 (excepting Thursday 5th December), at the Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Gore, London SW72AP. Admission is free but by ticket only. 500 tickets are available in advance for each day of the exhibilion. A further 1,000 tickets are available each day to personal callers.
Telephone bookings/enquiries: Royal Albert Hall Box Office, 0171 589 8212, open 9.00am to 9.00pm every day.

Continuing on with my Choices ideas for books from my banned Reddit account, here is "Four":
The fourth album curse is starting to weigh on your shoulders. By the time an artist releases their fourth album, it's believed that they're no longer popular, no longer a commercial success--of course, there have been exceptions. Do you have what it takes to be one?
Gameplay: your choices matter. Being a household name in the world of music, you'll decide whether to stick with the genre you love (pop, rock, hip-hop, or country), or if you want to experiment with a new sound. Along with this, your decisions will decide how your public views you, and if it tracks with your musical style. Are you into flashy, costume-changing performances, rhythmic dance routines, or intimate vocal performances?
LIs:
Dawn Diaz--a pop and R&B singer known for her phenomenal voice and having released 7 #1 albums ever since she began her career ten years ago. Over the years, she's become a master of the media, altering her image to supoort her music and shock her audience while remaining tasteful. When you collaborated on her hit single last year, she volunteers to collaborate with you on your new album. Her diverse style may be just what you need. (Argentinean-American, usually wears stylish designer clothing--unless she's anywear where there are normal people. Get ready for sweatshirts and jeans!)
Antonio Sousa--a former Olympian and your bodyguard. You met him at one of the ceremonies when he was competing in karate, and you hit it off immediately! He's protective ith you but understands the price of fame you have to pay, allowing you to grow from success and failure. You mean the world to him, and since he puts family at the forefront of everything he does, he helps you gain perspective on a possibly intimate fourth album. But are you ready to take the pain that comes with how personal it can get? (Brazilian, usually wears suits, but can be found in a sleeves shirt and jeans if you catch him on an off-day.)
Mursi Bono/Mercy--a rapper and former girl group star. After she embarked on a solo career, her first album went viral two years after it's release, leading to her record-breaking second album! Can you help her keep the momentum going with her third album? She usually only writes with a select group of people, but her manager suggests your creativity is perfect for the visual album she's planning. (African-American, employs an emphasis on blue, pink, and purple for her out of this world wardrobe.)
Nathan Wrighter/Bright Boy--dubbed as "punk's airhead" for his soft-rock albums that employed a sense of nostalgia and naivete, he's one of the chillest people you've ever met, at least off-stage--when he's under the spotlight, his dancing and outfits are loud and show-stopping. His likeability and professional attitude is inspirational for you, wanting to remain kind and assertive at the same time. When you get to meet your hero, what advice will he give about defying expectations and redefining yourself? (Caucasian, leather and colorful clothing, secure masculinity in anything he wears.)
Rhiannon Lou--a renound songwriter known for her immaculate skill. But she's also known for her little patience; if she feels like your collaboration won't go anywhere, she'll stop and she won't mince words. However, she's not unkind, just direct, and you'll find that she's quite different when she's out of the studio, embracing a minimalist viewpoint that combats her maximalist cowriters. Her impulsive perspective may challenge the cohesiveness of your album, but perhaps you need to start from scratch. (Chinese, casual clothing that embraces an almost childish aesthetic.)
Darius King--an actor who you costarred with for a blockbuster animated film, he approaches you for a musical role opposite one of the most famous opera singers in the world, someone you grew up listening to a lot in your household. Your musical training (and acting skills) is about to be tested when you take the role, but it gives you more time to spend with your idols, and makes you think that maybe acting is a career you should pursue as a break from music. (Afro-French, classy and high-end fashion that is nothing short of regal.)

Unveiling the Artistry: Website Design in Sydney
Tumblr media
In the digital age, your website serves as the virtual storefront of your business. Just like a brick-and-mortar store, a well-designed website can create a lasting impression on your visitors, influencing their perception of your brand and, ultimately, their decision to engage with your products or services. In the heart of Australia, Sydney stands out not only as a global city but also as a hub for innovation and creativity, making it a hotspot for cutting-edge website design. In this article, we'll explore the dynamic world of website design Sydney and how businesses are leveraging this vibrant ecosystem to establish a compelling online presence.
The Creative Hub:
Sydney's dynamic and diverse cultural landscape has fostered a vibrant community of designers, developers, and digital strategists. The city is home to a myriad of creative agencies and individual talents specializing in website design. From the iconic Opera House to the bustling streets of Surry Hills, Sydney's energy is reflected in the websites that emanate from its studios.
Trends in Sydney Website Design:
Sydney's design scene is known for staying ahead of the curve, embracing the latest trends while infusing a touch of local flavor. Here are some notable trends shaping website design in Sydney:
Minimalistic Aesthetics: Clean lines, ample white space, and a focus on user experience characterize many Sydney-designed websites. The minimalist approach not only enhances visual appeal but also ensures a seamless and intuitive navigation experience for users.
Mobile-First Design: With the increasing prevalence of mobile devices, Sydney's web designers prioritize mobile-first design principles. Responsive and adaptive designs are becoming the norm, ensuring that websites look and function seamlessly across various screen sizes.
Bold Typography: Typography is being used as a powerful design element to convey brand personality. Sydney designers are experimenting with bold and expressive fonts to make a statement and capture visitors' attention.
Interactive Experiences: Websites are no longer static entities; they are interactive experiences. Sydney designers are incorporating engaging animations, scroll-triggered effects, and other interactive elements to create memorable and dynamic user experiences.
Showcasing Sydney's Best:
Several Sydney-based businesses have set the bar high when it comes to website design. From e-commerce platforms to creative agencies, these businesses understand the importance of a visually appealing and user-friendly website. Whether it's the sleek design of a fashion boutique's online store or the immersive experience of a restaurant's website, Sydney's web designers are elevating the online presence of local businesses to new heights.
Tips for Businesses Seeking Website Design in Sydney:
If you're a business looking to establish or revamp your online presence in Sydney, consider the following tips:
Research Local Designers: Explore the portfolios of local web design agencies and freelancers. Look for a style that aligns with your brand and values.
Prioritize User Experience: A visually stunning website is great, but it must also offer an intuitive and enjoyable user experience. Ensure that the designer prioritizes usability and accessibility.
Mobile Optimization: Given the prevalence of mobile users, insist on a mobile-first design approach to reach a broader audience.
Collaborate and Communicate: Establish clear communication with your chosen designer or agency. Collaborate on ideas and provide constructive feedback to ensure the final product aligns with your vision.

Houston, Texas: The Mosaic of Culture and Entertainment
One of the city's crowning jewels is its Theater District, a cultural epicenter that rivals those of many larger metropolises. Home to world-class venues like the Alley Theatre, the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, and the Wortham Theater Center, Houston has rightfully earned its place on the map as a destination for theater enthusiasts. The district hosts Broadway productions, ballet performances, and opera, providing a rich tapestry of performing arts that captivates audiences from all walks of life.
Beyond the stage, Houston's neighborhoods tell a story of cultural fusion. Take a stroll through the historic Heights district, where Victorian-era homes coexist with modern art studios and trendy boutiques. The Montrose area, with its bohemian spirit, is a haven for artists, musicians, and those who seek the offbeat. Houston's Chinatown, located in the Southwest, beckons with an array of Asian cuisines and cultural experiences, adding another layer to the city's diverse identity.
An interesting fact that underscores Houston's commitment to the arts is the Art Car Parade, an annual event that transforms the city's streets into a rolling canvas of creativity. Unique and imaginative vehicles, adorned with sculptures, paintings, and quirky designs, parade through downtown Houston, showcasing the city's irrepressible spirit of innovation and artistic expression.

Houston's Engineering Marvel: The Fred Hartman Bridge
The Fred Hartman Bridge, completed in 1995, rises gracefully above the ship channel with its main span stretching an impressive 2,800 feet. Standing at 440 feet tall, it is a formidable presence that dominates the skyline and serves as a gateway to the bustling maritime activities that define the region. The bridge's aesthetic design, featuring two white towers and a series of cables that seem to suspend the roadway in mid-air, adds an artistic touch to its utilitarian purpose, making it an iconic silhouette against the Texas sky.
Beyond its visual appeal, the Fred Hartman Bridge plays a crucial role in facilitating commerce and transportation in the Houston area. Its six lanes of traffic accommodate a steady flow of vehicles, including the heavy trucks and equipment integral to the region's industrial activities. The bridge serves as a vital link for the energy sector, connecting refineries and petrochemical facilities on both sides of the ship channel, and stands as a lifeline for the movement of goods and people.
The Fred Hartman Bridge not only serves as a functional structure but also embodies the spirit of progress that defines Houston. As the city continues to evolve as a global economic player, this engineering marvel stands as a testament to Houston's resilience, innovation, and capacity to overcome challenges. Whether admired from a distance or traversed up close, the Fred Hartman Bridge is a symbol of Houston's commitment to connecting communities and driving forward into a future defined by growth and prosperity.
Texas Tales: A Trio of Texan Triumphs
Texas, the expansive icon of the American Southwest, narrates its story through three distinctive triumphs—economic prowess, cultural vibrancy, and natural grandeur. In the bustling cities of Dallas, Houston, and Austin, the state boasts an economic powerhouse driven by innovation and entrepreneurship. Houston, a global energy epicenter, anchors the state's dominance in the oil and gas industry, while Austin, with its thriving tech scene, embodies the spirit of modern innovation. The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, a blend of urban sophistication and Texan charm, exemplifies the economic diversity that defines the state's success.
Culturally, Texas stands as a vibrant mosaic shaped by its cowboy heritage, rich history, and a fusion of diverse influences. The cowboy way of life persists in rodeos and ranches, paying homage to the state's storied past. Yet, Texas is equally at home in the avant-garde art scenes of cities like San Antonio and the multicultural culinary landscapes where Tex-Mex flavors mingle with barbecue traditions. Festivals celebrating everything from music to film punctuate the Texan calendar, showcasing a dynamic cultural tapestry that bridges the traditional and the contemporary. Nature provides the final stroke in Texas's canvas of triumphs. From the expansive deserts of Big Bend to the lush landscapes of the Hill Country, the state's geography is as diverse as it is awe-inspiring. The iconic bluebonnets blanket fields in a burst of color during spring, while the coastal shores along the Gulf of Mexico offer sandy retreats. Texas, with its trio of economic resilience, cultural richness, and natural splendor, continues to captivate as a state where grand narratives unfold against the backdrop of boundless horizons.

Promising Ukrainian mezzo-soprano Kseniia Nikolaieva joined the Jette Parker Young Artists Program for the Season 2020/22. Having a great passion for music and visual arts, Kseniia received two master’s degrees: firstly as an opera singer at the Ukrainian National Tchaikovsky Academy of Music by Pr. Alexander Dyachenko, and secondly as a designer-architect. Her first opera debut in Kiev Opera Studio was at the age of 19 in the role of Marta (Iolanta). After successful performances at competitions Neue Stimmen, Tenor Viñas Competition, Eva Marton International Singing Competition – she was invited to be part of the National Opera Studio program in London (2019-2020). Kseniia is honored to have been taught by Montserrat Caballe, Elena Obraztsova, Eva Marton, Anita Rachvelishvili, Nelly Miricioiu and many others. Kseniia is supported by a scholarship from the President of Ukraine, VERE MUSIC FUND and Opera Awards Foundation. From 2020-2022 Kseniia joined Jette Parker Young Artists Program in the Royal Opera House. At the start of the 2020/21 Season Kseniia made her Royal Opera debut as Bessie in Kurt Weill’s Mahagonny and Eboli/Mrs.Quickly in the Summer Performance. Opera engagements include Marta in Iolanta, Hivria in Mussorgsky’s Sorochinska yarmarka, Olga in Eugene Onegin, Maddalena in Rigoletto and Lubasha in Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride (Kiev National Opera Studio), and debuts Sapho in Sapho with the Welsh National Opera and recital with the English National Opera as part of the National Opera Studio Program in 2019–20. Plans include Giovanna in Rigoletto, Annina in La Traviata, Emilia in Otello, Mother in Mavra, Suzuki in Madama Butterfly in the Royal Opera House season 2021-2022. Hello, Kseniia! Thank you for accepting our invitation, now that your country is passing through such difficult times! We are all watching the tremendous news every day and we’ve been praying for everything to stop. How are you living it and what do you think about the opera world’s reaction on the violent attacks towards Ukraine? Hello! I was very pleased to receive your invitation, thank you! Ukrainians are a very strong people! Our strength is in our spirit, in truth, in peace-loving, in our unity as a nation and our incorruptible love for our country! The first days of Russia’s attack on Ukraine were like a nightmare! I wanted someone to pinch you, you woke up and all this bloody hell ended! But, unfortunately, all this turned out to be a shocking reality… A reality that takes away human lives, even those that have just been born, destroys our cities with bomb shells, our homes, separates families, tramples on human destinies… The enemy invaded our home – Ukraine without an invitation, with pleasure walking with tank tracks all over her body, destroying everything that is dear to us, that we all created with such love for many years! I no longer recognize my native streets, parks, playgrounds – the cold hand of the barbarian murderers did not tremble before anything! Who are these people?… And are they people at all? The world of art feels life and all its manifestations very subtly, passing what is happening not only through the head, but also through the soul. That response, that support and empathy that the entire opera world is now showing in relation to the terrorist attacks of the aggressor on Ukraine, once again shows everyone the scale of madness, inhumanity and the complete absence of all moral and social values! The question on everyone’s lips today is: is the culture supposed to stay out of politics or to exercize its social function? How could art and artists help Ukraine at this point? When it comes to the killing of innocent, peaceful people and crimes against humanity, this is no longer politic!Could art and artists help Ukraine in this situation? Of course, yes! Only tears, feelings, words of condolence, support won’t help grief – you need to act! Everyone should act according to their abilities! Everyone chooses their own way of helping, I can share mine.
Now, in London, I participate in many charity concerts, in everything where you can collect financial assistance to support Ukraine! Every day I have at least one performance scheduled. In this situation, the site doesn’t matter to me. Yesterday, for example, I was contacted by the Covent Garden Street Performers Association and asked to perform at Covent Garden Square along with street musicians in front of a large number of people who came to support and donate money for Ukraine, and in the evening I had a performance scheduled at ROH. Of course, I agreed – in this situation, any methods are good! I communicate with sponsors, tell them the situation in Ukraine; in the evening, if there is no performance, I go to a protest, where I also perform. I do all this in order to raise funds and transfer them not to some large organization-fund that closes global problems, but to send them to volunteers in Ukraine, whom I know personally. Volunteers who are at the epicenter, in the occupied territories, who are engaged in the purchase of medicines for hospitals, volunteers who cook and buy food, orphanages, large families. I see all the reporting, so I understand that not a single penalty will be lost or spent incorrectly. Since there is not only an armed war against the Ukrainian people, but also an information war aimed at alerting people with false information and blocking sources of real information by Russia, social networks are also a platform for revealing the situation of real events, in real time. An artist is an influencer, each in his own scale, with his own team of admirers, who is able to pay attention to the problem, to open his eyes to the truth. Therefore, don’t think that this won’t work, even if your story, post will make at least one person think about standing up in defense and support of Ukraine – this is already a victory! reposted from https://opera-charm.com/

Structure on the body
youtube
Design and construct a sculptural form that can be worn on the body where the starting point is the 3d structures you made in paper and card, and your research from Broomfield.. You can use any media, RECYCLED where possible, which you should source yourself, or we also have a range available in the studio, including paper, wallpaper, fabrics etc.
This does not have to be a fashion garment- do not be inhibited by the body- use it as a base to work on/ around.
Again, this should be abstract, and not be a covering of leaves etc.  Consider form, texture and surface, experiment with a broad variety media manipulation.
You should generate your own ideas initially, but can work in pairs to develop an outcome together.
You should research artists and designers who make sculptural forms on the body, and you should plan your ideas carefully in your book before making.  Ensure you fully test materials, surfaces and structure before and during making the work, and record all your analysis in your journal and photographs.
Your final outcome must be photographed and filmed on a human form in the photography studio between 9.00 and 4.00, so make it to fit yourself or a specific model.  It may have a function, or can be purely a visual wonder! You should experiment with lighting, poses for photos and film..

𝟭𝟲𝟭: 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝘆𝗮 𝗨ç𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗸 & 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗢𝗯𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 [𝟱𝟵 𝗺𝗶𝗻]
Fulya Uçanok
Scenes from Spaces and Traces
A comprovised piece, with use of studio recordings coupled with recordings gathered in soundwalks.
S-wallow-ING
“Quest(ion)s" with voice artist Sumru Ağıryürüyen
A collaboration with two swallow birds. On a visit to Edincik/Turkey was woken up by two swallow birds’ dawn songs around 4:00 AM. I got up and without scaring them off, was able to record their chatter. I explore a practice where I am situated as an actor within a network of entangled relations with the two swallows, and my instrument (piano, objects, electroacoustics).
How do I move past the learnt ape-brain vs. bird-brain dichotomies? Starting with such questions, I kept adding questions, perspectives, versions, and stories in sounding together with them.
Balloons For Thought
Investigation of various tactile and movement-based relations between object-body and human-body. Exploring various possibilities for sound, movement and narrative. The narratives are explored through gestural and textural thinking as well as some program and abstract elements.
Fulya Uçanok is an electroacoustic musician and pianist; composing, performing and improvising. Born in Turkey, she studied Eurogenetic classical music piano performance, later ventured into studying performance practice and socio-sonic connections of the Balinese Gender Wayang in Bali/Indonesia, and then moved into electroacoustic composition and performance exploring experimental and contemporary forms of musicking.
Her current interests include response-able sonic practices with humans, more-than-humans, and materials; practices with musical instruments as material agents (human-instrument collaborations) and; sympoietic practices in multivalent, immanent spaces within electroacoustic composition and performance.

Prism Obsidian
The Bird Clock Opera featuring the Days Of The Week
premier
The texts for this piece were originally written as part of a revision of the Homeric Hymn to Demeter; a revision which broadens the picture of Black women who are descendant of colonial enslavement.  A dialogue based on the contrast of Artemis’ power and agency over her body compared to women who have been unsafe for generations.
Women who carry these wounds as warnings and a call out for accountability.  The underlying track called 'Xercathalon's Debut: A Bird Clock Opera, is a piece based on the sounds of childhood as remembered and incorporated into this collaborative soundscape.
Obsidian is a visual artist and researcher in postcolonial theology, culture and education.  She is taking a Black Quantum Afrofuturist approach towards tackling issues of racism, cultural appropriation, intersectionality and sustainable urban regeneration by drawing on an image of global Black cultures.
Prism is a musician and visual artist specialising in rainbowgoth sound design and crafting analog double exposure captures. She is based in Berlin and responds to the inspiration of memory, saturation, and the dreamworld.

20 Objects Descriptions (50 Words)
01 Piano
My journey with the piano began at age 7, leading me to an antique green-patterned upright piano that holds sentimental value. This versatile instrument spans a wide sound range, just as I aspire to be a versatile designer skilled in various creative disciplines, from graphic to UX design.
02 Viola
The viola, a unique member of the string family, has a warm sound and serves as the alto voice between violin and cello. The viola’s rarity is what makes it special. Similarly, as a designer, I wish to find and embrace my unique perspectives, skills, and styles that set me apart.
03 Music Stand
My trusty music stand, a symbol of commitment to my viola practice, provides a stable platform for sheet music. It parallels the teamwork in music, where musicians collaborate, often sharing a stand, mirroring the cooperation in design, where designers work together to achieve harmonious outcomes with writers, developers, and business partners.
04 Music Folder
My cherished yellow music folder was a gift from my first teacher. It represents the musical language's intricate symbols, creating beautiful melodies. As designers, we wield a visual language, using colours, shapes, and typography to convey messages, emotions, and perceptions, much like musicians interpreting scores to evoke emotions and connect with an audience.
05 Metronome
A metronome aids musicians in maintaining rhythm, and I rely on it during practice. It also serves as a tuner for my viola. Similarly, design principles like colour, typography, and spacing ensure visual cohesion. Just as a metronome enforces consistent timing in music, design rules provide structure for designers' creative work.
06 Concert Programme Collection
My collection of concert brochures, pamphlets, and booklets preserves cherished memories and stories from various performances, including the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, NZ Opera and more. These keepsakes provide valuable information about composers, musicians, and event details, reminding me of my musical journey's rich tapestry.
07 Concert Attire
This is a dress that I currently wear when performing on stage. Just as musicians' attire shapes their audience's perception, my design portfolio influences my professional identity. It should showcase my unique style, professionalism, and passion, much like concert attire establishes an artist's presence and identity.
08 Crucifix
For years, I’ve had this crucifix sit on the top of my cupboard or shelf in my bedroom. It has served as a reminder of my faith. Its imagery of sacrifice, love, and salvation can enrich my designs, infusing reverence and contemplation. Incorporating it into my work reminds viewers of Christianity's profound significance, adding depth and emotion to my creations.
09 Bible
This childhood Bible book, resurfaced as a gateway to reconnect with my faith. Eager to delve into its stories and contexts, I seek to deepen my understanding of Christianity. This exploration marks a crucial step towards my aspiration of engaging in church-related design work, bridging faith and design.
10 Bandages
My pneumonia ICU stay in September 2023 became a crucial life experience, akin to a bandage shielding wounds. It heightened awareness of physical and mental wellbeing and sparked an interest in healthcare and social-good design. I am excited about my upcoming internship at Good Health Design, a transdisciplinary studio at AUT's School of Art and Design.
11 Headphones
These gifted Bluetooth headphones from my mum is a creative companion, enhancing my focus with music. Music's power to uplift the mind fuels my imagination during work. During commutes, I switch to pop genres for a contrasting experience, recognizing how different music genres influence moods and activities, enriching my daily journey.
12 Blue-Light Glasses
A pair of blue-light glasses were another gift from my mum. As designers, we spend a substantial amount of time looking at our screens. This prolonged exposure can cause damage and strain to our eyes so blue-light glasses are essential to safeguarding out eyes and optimizing our design workflow.
13 Quilted Blanket
A cherished quilted blanket, a gift from my grandmother's friend in 2016, symbolizes love and craftsmanship. Its intricate patterns, colours, and stitching techniques reflect artistry beyond digital screens, reminding us that design thrives in the tangible, tactile world, honouring the time, effort, and creativity poured into its creation.
14 Gifted Cards Collection
These are all the handwritten notes and cards, I’ve received all the way back to my old friends from primary school which I keep them in a cookie tin container. Collections represent a bank of inspiration of designers, their work, and the creative community. In a way, they are like Pinterest or Behance moodboards.
15 Peacocks
Free-roaming peafowls in my neighbourhood, remnants of a pre-development era, evoke nature's beauty. Their presence inspires my design work, coinciding with my upcoming internship at Waiheke Resources Trust, a non-profit promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility. These majestic birds symbolize the importance of preserving and honouring Mother Nature's wonders.
16 Milo the Cavapoochon
My family’s first pet, Milo, a Cavapoochon puppy, brought us a lot of joy. Though we couldn't provide the care he needed, his brief stay reminded me of the importance of understanding audiences, users, and stakeholders in design. Empathy yields more impactful and resonant creations that meet their goals and needs.
17 Notebook/Visual Diary
My collection of unused notebooks beckons, their pristine pages intimidating yet inviting. Overcoming the fear of imperfection, I yearn to freely write, draw, and capture ideas. In a digital age, paper and pen offer a screen-free, creative sanctuary, ready to capture spontaneous inspirations and ensure no brilliant idea goes unnoticed or forgotten.
18 ADP and ADE Folio Boards
Portfolio boards from my high school years, 11ADP and 12ADE, mark the start of my artistic journey. Year 11 ignited my passion for art and design, and year 12 solidified my career choice. These boards capture the early stages of my creative evolution, signifying the pivotal years of my artistic awakening.
19 School Yearbooks
Skipping a school year, a proud achievement, marked the transition from one chapter to another, symbolizing liberation. Yearbooks now preserve memories from primary, intermediate, and high school. Similarly, the design world, with boundless creativity and innovative potential, offers opportunities to impact lives, much like my journey of skipping a year unlocked new horizons.
20 Threaded Magazine
Threaded magazine, a gift from Fiona Grieve's design studio, embodies the vibrant design community I aim to join. It symbolizes a collective of passionate, innovative individuals shaping the design landscape, inspiring my aspiration to be part of this dynamic world of like-minded creatives.
