As part of this activity we are developing community hubs along the canal stretch from Blackburn to Pendle in collaboration with local organisations and community groups where paddle sports, walking, cycling, growing, planting and creative activity can take place. These creative residencies should build on some of the work that has already taken place, and continue to explore how we can build a safer, greener, more productive, active environment, and nurture a unique sense of place whilst using the Leeds & Liverpool Canal as a vehicle for bringing people together on a waterway that everyone shares. We’re keen for ideas to be co-produced with the groups identified so are seeking proposals that could be developed collaboratively, encouraging individuals to engage with the canal environment, animate the space, and create a long term legacy. Earlier this year, my brother, @michaelturkas, moved from Norwich, Norfolk, to Preston in Lancashire. Recently I took a trip up North to go and visit him for a few days which was really fun and great to see him again! – It's the first time I'd been to Preston and I was definitely impressed. It's a lovely city with lots of independent cafes and restaurants, friendly people, an impressively large park and some interesting historical architecture. – Even better, it is close to lots of natural beauty, including the Forest of Bowland which we visited one day for a walk. This area was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1964 and when you visit it, it's easy to see why! As an AONB, the Forest of Bowland is protected under the 1949 National Parks and Access to Countryside Act. – The Forest of Bowland has an amazing rugged beauty to it, with steep moorland hills, undulating lowlands, rivers, streams, waterfalls, an abundance of wildlife and small historic villages, hamlets and isolated buildings. Setting off from the village of Dunsop Bridge, we walked through a valley surrounded by tall hills with trees and moorland, alongside winding rivers and fields of cows and sheep. The tranquility and serenity of the area was absolutely wonderful. Quirkilicious bird sculpture on #Morecambe Jetty 🧡 ‘Celebrating the birds and other diverse wildlife of Morecambe Bay, the TERN project (1999) is a stunning series of various award-winning sculptures situated along Morecambe’s seafront and promenade. Steel cormorants, gannets and razorbills sit proudly on the roundabouts on Central Drive and on the top of bollards in the sea railings. On the Stone Jetty, behind the Midland Hotel, you can find a huge compass, work out various wordy puzzles, and discover a strange mythical bird.
