280: Reveen // Stop Smoking... Stop Over-Eating
Tumblr media
Stop Smoking... Stop Over-Eating Reveen 1978, Reveen Recordings
Novelty record with a fab sleeve here, featuring hypnotic self-help suggestion courtesy of the Man They Call Reveen, an Australian-born magician who toured a trough through Atlantic Canada for 35 years. Due perhaps to the limitations of the LP format, Reveen spends the majority of each side of the record inducing the listener into a hypnotic state by telling you Hooow reLAXed Yooouuuu Arrreeee and COUNting DOWN in a DRONing CADEnce before rather briefly outlining what is bad about smoking and over-eating respectively and supposedly planting the suggestion you mightn’t want to do either of those things anymore. Reveen’s accent is kind of stuck in one of the middle stages of Animorphing between his native Australian and a poncy Received British accent, which makes everything he says funny. I’ve never been susceptible to hypnosis (…unless?), so neither side pulled me under and cured me of my ways, though the record is acceptable as ASMR and I conked right the fuck out listening to it this afternoon.
youtube
Reveen was both a mesmerist and a magician—I’m just old enough (41) to have possibly caught the tail end of his career, but never saw a performance. From what I can gather from the sparse clips online, he ran a very old school show, dressing himself in faux Eastern finery and no doubt reciting borrowed stage patter about having learned certain of his arts from Oriental mystics. His illusions look fairly stock, but he probably didn’t have to do more than the basics to thrill rural Canadian audiences in an era before widespread cable television and the internet. He’s largely forgotten these days, though his resemblance to Ricky from the Trailer Park Boys is the source of a running gag, but in his day his gently hokey mysticism was woven into the fabric of his adopted country, and a warm nostalgia still faintly clings to his powerfully coifed visage.

My local record store got a shipment of the Love Potion vinyls in and were told they were super limited. They all say made in Canada.
I feel like they maybe pressed too many of the target copies and they don’t want an Adele 30 situation
Yes, I am now on this train too. “Super limited” has no real definition to UMG lol.

Rare British Columbia emo/indie tapes in stock
Quick status update on Daddy's Hands and Ache Hour Credo tapes:
After a long hiatus from the music world, I've decided to ditch 256records as a company and liquidate old stock, but it'd be unfair to do so without letting some planned releases/oddities stay in the vault.
What you've all been waiting for is probably the AHC (Ache Hour Credo) tape release. We've acquired a quality source (close to master) from a friend in BC Canada (who won't be named). As 256 was planning to produce this eventually, we'll be instead passing the baton to Trashman Records out of Tampa which will produce much more quality tapes for AHC's cassette release, than 256 ever could with our equipment. They're going to produce a limited run of 100 tapes at $15 a pop and if they sell quick, they'll probably do a record pressing. A follow up post on this tumblr will be made when the release is made, as well as it'll be posted on discogs, etc. so stay tuned for that.
Also, we've begun selling the old stock Daddy's Hands Ghost in the bong tapes for $15 each again this time on Discogs, so check them out if you like DH at https://discogs.com/seller/256records/profile
We have about 20 left.
Another thing is, we have a few cd's and an AHC vinyl test pressing for sale.
We're hoping to sell the CD's to an archivist of some kind, someone with a youtube channel or willing to make one to archive the contents of the CDs. There's some unreleased stuff in them. Don't worry though, if the person we end up sendin it out to doesn't hold up their end of the bargain we'll have already made rips of them and eventually will post the contents of it on youtube or something.
Here are the CD's:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And of course:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CD's: $200 (for all 3)
AHC Record: $250
All of them: $425
Throw me an honest offer or something

It’s day 10 of the #25daysofvinylmas challenge by @XOaudio_: Miracle On 34th Street: A Record People Would Be Surprised That I Own. Shades Of Culture - Mindstate (Windmill, 1998/Return To Analog, 2022) I would hope by now nothing I spun would surprise anyone. However, considering this is a Record Store Day Canada exclusive - I haven’t been north of the border in years - and a record most people in the U.S. have probably never heard of, there might be a raised eyebrow or two at seeing this in my feed. I’m happy to report that is an excellent record, too, and one which can firmly plant its flag in the golden age of hip hop. This first-ever vinyl pressing is another class act from RTA, too, with gorgeous mastering and an immaculate pressing. Only 1,000 of these were made (I have #94) so if you’re a true hip hop head, get on this STAT! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #decembervinylchallenge #hiphop @returntoanalog_mtl https://www.instagram.com/p/CmAVc1cAFMU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Fu##in Up Neil Young and Crazy Horse (Reprise) (released 20 April 2024, for Record Store Day)
Initially this seems like the strangest Neil Young release in a multiple decade of oddball releases: a newly configured Crazy Horse (with Micah Nelson) doing reworkings of nine of the ten songs from Ragged Glory and all of the songs (save for the cover of Farmer John) have been given new titles. It doesn't pay to try to figure out the rationale behind this, you are either on board with Mr Young or you are not. Trying to figure out the why of anything he does is pointless.
However, some investigation reveals this not to be such a bizarre release after all. What it is is a live performance performed at the Rivoli in Toronto, Canada on Nov 4 2023. It was a big pay day private gig. Neil loves his live albums so this isn't such a shocking release knowing these facts as it was when I believed this was just a bizarre inexplicable Ragged Glory (Neil's Version). Actually, knowing these facts kind of makes this less exciting and suddenly, I'm not hugely interested like I was when I believed these were new studio versions!
Above you see the front and the back of the album. The album plastic has small pinholes in it, for reasons I fail to understand. Below, I show both photos again, the first being taken out of the sunshine so the holes don't appear. The second shows the back of the album without the plastic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next shot shows off the gatefold.
Tumblr media
Next up you will find a close up of that album long hype sticker.
Tumblr media
And we all know Neil loves his lithographs, so here is what it looks like. Exciting, eh?
Tumblr media
This is a double album so I'll show you the front and back of the custom inner sleeves for Record 1 followed by the labels on that first album.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next shots show you the front and back of the inner sleeve for the second record followed by both sides of the label. It feels quite odd to see Mazzeo artwork in color after years of seeing his stuff on Zuma in black and white.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was pressed on clear vinyl. My now standard shots of the vinyl as a whole can be seen below followed by my Sunshine Shot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another big surprise is this album doesn't include one of those darn miniature inserts that looks like yellow lined paper trying to sell the buyer on joining Neil Young Archives. Instead, Neil has jazzed things and given us a full size insert promoting NYA. You can see it below.

Silverstein Celebrate 15th Anniversary of ‘A Shipwreck…’
A new 15th anniversary pressing of Silverstein’s A Shipwreck in the Sand has been announced. Craft Recordings celebrates the 15thanniversary of Silverstein’s bestselling fourth album, A Shipwreck in the Sand, with a vinyl reissue and several color exclusives. The 2009 concept album remains a favorite in the band’s extensive discography, with such tracks as “Vices” (feat. Liam Cormier of Cancer Bats), “The End” (feat. Lights) and “American Dream.” Set for release on June 28th and available for pre-order today, A Shipwreck in the Sand can be found on classic black vinyl, as well as several limited-edition color variants, including Green Smoke (exclusively at Silverstein’s official store), Orange Smoke (CraftRecordings.com and VictoryRecords.com) and Translucent Forest Green (Brooklyn Vegan). Formed in 2000 in Burlington, Ontario, Silverstein have long been at the forefront of the hardcore scene, thanks to their dynamic blend of melody and aggression with the unabashed earnestness of emo. In 2002, the five-piece (whose name was inspired by a shared fondness of the poet Shel Silverstein) joined Victory Records, the storied rock, metal, punk and hardcore label, which boasts Thursday, Between the Buried and Me and Taking Back Sunday among its legendary alumni. Victory Records is now a part of Concord's independent label family, with its formidable repertoire managed by Craft Recordings.    Under the label, they released their celebrated full-length debut, When Broken Is Easily Fixed (2003), followed by Discovering the Waterfront (2005) and Arrivals & Departures (2007). By the time they released their fourth and final studio album under Victory, 2009’s A Shipwreck in the Sand, Silverstein were significant stars in the scene, having earned their first Juno nomination and traversed the world (including a sold-out headlining tour across Canada, runs across South America, Europe and the UK, plus two stints with the Vans Warped Tour).    Reuniting with the GRAMMY®-winning producer Cameron Webb (Disturbed, Kelly Clarkson, Motörhead), the band set to work on one of their most ambitious projects. Written as a concept album, A Shipwreck in the Sand tells the story of a ship’s crew who hope to discover new land. As their search becomes increasingly futile, the crew revolts against their captain. Comprised of four chapters—“It Burns Within Us All” (tracks 1–3), “Liars, Cheaters and Thieves” (tracks 4–7), “Fight Fire with Fire” (tracks 8–10) and “Death and Taxes” (tracks 11–14)—the album takes listeners through a dramatic musical journey: one that ranges from emotive, pop-forward numbers to some of the heaviest songs of Silverstein’s career.   Among the highlights is “Vices,” featuring guest vocals by Cancer Bats frontman Liam Cormier. Released as a single, the track showcases what Silverstein does best: blending cathartic vocals and urgent riffs with lyrical songwriting and anthemic melodies. Other standouts include the ominous opener “A Great Fire,” the hook-filled “I Knew I Couldn’t Trust You” and—on the other end of the spectrum—“I Am the Arsonist,” which delivers a blistering, all-out sonic assault. In addition to Cormier, the band is joined by Scott Wade (formerly of Comeback Kid) on the breakneck “Born Dead,” while singer-songwriter Lights lends her ethereal vocals to the soaring, aptly titled closing track, “The End.” The album also features a cameo by guitarist Paul Marc Rousseau, who became a full-time member of Silverstein in 2012.   In an interview for the 2010 live album, Decade (Live at the Mocambo), frontman Shane Told shared deeper insight into the album’s themes—all of which served as a metaphor for the era’s socio-political climate. “The reason I wanted to do a concept record was because of the way the world is right now, with the economy being messed up, people losing jobs and families losing their life savings, and not knowing what they are going to do in the future. . . . It’s a really scary time.”   He continued, “There’s also a lot of… https://chorus.fm/news/silverstein-celebrate-15th-anniversary-of-a-shipwreck/

Custom Vinyl Records Pressing Is Having A Sale
Tumblr media
Custom Vinyl Records Pressing is having a sale right now. The Canadian record-pressing company is offering a price reduction on its services indefinitely. The vinyl revival started in 2007 and by 2017 Sony promised to start pressing records again for the first time since it stopped doing so in 1989. People assumed the buyers were older fans who bought records when they were kids but Taylor Swift has proven to be one of the major catalysts for the shift. Her 2022 album Midnights is the first to have its vinyl version outsell CDs since 1987. She re-recorded her 1989 (Taylor's Version) album and when it was released in 2023 it set another first for selling more than one million vinyl copies in a year. The renewed popularity of vinyl was followed by a demand that has been difficult to meet.  Jack White famously complained about it in 2022 because of all the requests he received from major labels to use his record plant.
Paul Murton founded Custom Vinyls Record Pressing in 1998 when Sony left Canada. Murton worked as a sales representative for their music plant and he kept the room and former Sony employees to go into CD duplication. A partnership with a German manufacturer followed this move to develop a state-of-the-art record press that could complete vinyl records in four weeks. Murton says,
"Custom Vinyl Records Pressing is dedicated to empowering artists and labels by providing unparalleled quality and affordability. We believe that every artist deserves the opportunity to share their music in the timeless format of vinyl"
The company has a 30% discount on all vinyl pressing services with 100 records for $1,199.00. For more information check out the website or contact Paul Murton directly at (888) 679-1207.

Music for Business Canada: Modern Ways of Turning Music into Business
Music is an essential part of our lives, and its consumption has grown exponentially with the advent of streaming services, social media, and other digital platforms. In today's rapidly evolving music industry, there are numerous ways for artists and creators to venture into music for business Canada by turning their passion for music into a profitable business. This article will explore five modern methods of turning music into business and how they're shaping the industry.
Streaming Platforms and Subscriptions
The rise of streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal has fundamentally changed how people listen to and discover music. These platforms offer artists the chance to make their music accessible to millions of listeners worldwide. Through subscriptions, ad revenues, and royalties, artists can generate a steady income. To maximize their earnings, many musicians opt to release their music exclusively on a particular platform or offer exclusive content for premium subscribers, creating additional revenue streams.
Selling Merchandise and Physical Media
Even in the digital age, selling merchandise and physical media remains a viable business strategy for musicians. Selling items such as t-shirts, posters, vinyl records, and CDs not only generates income but also helps artists build their brand and connect with fans. In recent years, the popularity of vinyl records has experienced a resurgence, offering a more tangible and nostalgic experience for listeners. Many musicians capitalize on this trend by releasing limited edition vinyl pressings or offering merchandise bundles to increase sales.
Live Performances and Virtual Concerts
Performing live has always been an essential aspect of the music business. Concerts and music festivals not only generate ticket sales but also provide opportunities for artists to sell merchandise and connect with fans on a personal level. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the music industry has adapted by offering virtual concerts and livestreams, allowing fans to experience live music from the comfort of their homes. These virtual events have the potential to reach a global audience and generate significant revenue, particularly when combined with exclusive content and interactive elements.
Music Licensing and Sync Deals
Music licensing and sync deals are crucial revenue streams for musicians in the modern music industry. Licensing involves granting permission for the use of a song in various media formats such as films, TV shows, advertisements, and video games. Sync deals, on the other hand, involve placing a song within a specific visual context to enhance the viewer's experience. Both of these deals can be lucrative for artists, particularly when their music is featured in high-profile projects with a large audience reach.
Social Media and Content Creation
In today's digital landscape, social media plays a significant role in shaping an artist's success. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube offer musicians the opportunity to showcase their talents, grow their fanbase, and generate income. Creating engaging content that resonates with fans can lead to viral success and brand partnerships, which can further boost an artist's revenue. Additionally, some artists have found success by providing music for business Canada for user-generated content, allowing fans to use their songs as soundtracks for their own social media posts.
The modern music industry offers a multitude of opportunities to establish music for business Canada by providing a platform where artists to turn their passion for music into a successful business. By capitalizing on streaming platforms, selling merchandise and physical media, performing live and virtually, securing music licensing and sync deals, and harnessing the power of social media and content creation, musicians can thrive in today's ever-evolving landscape. As technology continues to advance and the industry adapts, the possibilities for turning music into business are endless.

THE RIB PAGE
The word is that Paul and Ringo are playing on the new Stones album. Paul has reportedly recorded his bass bits and Ringo will soon do his drumming.

Days alert: I knew the ladies were alive. ** Please let Johnny and Chanel find their way to each other as well as Wendy and Tripp. I hope Stephen Nichols gets an Emmy for his heartache at losing his Kayla.** Love it when Nick gets to come back. Hooray for the characters on Days, death cannot stop them!! I think the senior Mr. Shin needs a bigger part. ** How wonderful is it that Anna and Roman have been showing up more often??
*****
The Pro Football Hall of fame inductees are: Ronde Barber, Darrelle Revis, Joe Thomas, Zach Thomas, DeMarcus Ware, Don Coryell, Chuck Howley, Ken Riley and Joe Klecko.
*****
3.4% unemployment is the lowest since 1969!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!** Our legislature has only about 9%approval. We vote them in so why would we keep voting in people we don’t approve of??
*****
Spy balloons? Aliens? If the media and politicians paid as much attention to all the injustices in the world as they did the big balloon, we’d be ok.** What about the train disaster in East Palestine, Ohio?? Vinyl chloride and who knows what else?  I mean 3.2 billion in earnings? I think we should listen to the rail company employees when it comes to safety issues. Trump peeled back so many regulations and Biden hasn’t fixed that situation yet so I guess we can look forward to more crashes. By the end of the month, this train story finally has some traction and is all over the news. The Biden administration sent people on the ground within 2 hours. It is unfortunate that the face of the department of transportation waited a couple of weeks to go. Trump used it as an opportunity to visit the site. Some of the local press called it returning to the scene of the crime.  ** After a private briefing about the things in our air space, Sen. Kennedy said, “Lock your doors.”** A sphere showed up on the shores of Japan.
*****
Canada has super pigs, the result of breeding wild boar and pig. They are headed for America.
*****
So, I never really watch the View anymore but happened by it the other day and they were discussing how the Bidens ordered the same meal in a restaurant. They said that they heard people were bitching about it. They were all putting in their two cents worth. Why would people care and whose business is it what someone orders when they are dining? I do not get this world sometime and I can’t believe they are wasting ABC airtime with this.
*****
The U.S. is quadrupling troops in Taiwan.
*****
I can’t believe I got so excited that Micky Dolenz was on the Tonight Show and he only got a few minutes to talk and a few lines from Last Train to Clarksville. It is like Fallon is putting on a show in his basement where he gets to tell the first story and then go sing with the guest. What?
*****
In Florida, a Spectrum 13 news reporter and photographer were shot as they were at a homicide scene. The reporter, Dylan Lyons died and the shooter also made their way to a nearby home and killed a woman and her 9 year old daughter.
*****
Kyle Bush was busted in Mexico for firearm possession. He got 3.5 years and fined $1,100. He is still racing. Will he ever pay the consequences? It is doubtful because he is winning right now.
*****
George Santos told Piers Morgan that he told all his lies on an earlier campaign too, so he didn’t think he would get caught. Some republicans think that is an acceptable excuse.
*****
The latest Sexual misconduct news: R. Kelly and Harvey Weinstein just got more prison time.** Ashley Morgan Smithline who had accused Marilyn Manson of rape has recanted. Her case had been previously dismissed.
*****
We are evolving nicely. Studies show that penis size is up 24% from 3 decades ago.
*****
A woman named Emily that was part of the Georgia trial looking into election fraud is talking everywhere. Technically she has done nothing wrong. She isn’t revealing info she should not but she seemed way too excited about shaking Rudy’s hand. Yuk!!
*****
Male Giraffe’s test the female’s pee by sticking their tongue in the urine stream. This tells them if they are ready to mate.
*****
Did ya see Colbert joking with Hank Azaria about having a lot of $. Of course we know that but why does he think we want to hear about it? People are suffering dude, c’mon!
*****
The Neo Nazi’s had a National Day of Hate on the 25th. ** Portsmouth, NH saw swastikas on Jewish and black owned business on the lead up.
*****
Season 4 of Succession will be the last.
*****
I can’t wait to read Caste by Isabel Wilkerson.
*****
Barbra Streisand will get the 2023 Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg Woman of leadership award. The previous recipients are Agnes Gund, Queen Elizabeth II and Diane Von Furstenberg.
*****
The Bafta award picked best actor and actress as Austin Butler and Cate Blanchett. My best dressed were Hoyeon Jung, Catherine Zeta- Jones, Anya Taylor-Joy, Michelle Yeow, Florence Pugh and Cynthia Erivo.
*****
We are going to be so sick of seeing soapbox shyster characters ala Trump in the future of film and television.** So, Trump tried to get Disney to calm down Jimmy Kimmel?
*****
Biden got a clean bill of health.
*****
Fox news was caught with their pants down in the Dominion trial. Behind the scenes back and forth between the Fox pundits shows just how they spoon fed their audience. They believed none of the conspiracies they spouted right up to the insurrection. ** A court filing shows that Rupert Murdoch gave Jared Kushner advance copies of Biden’s ads before they were made public.
*****
Gov. Of Virginia Glenn Youngkin has blocked the ban on menstrual cycle tracking.

Bishop David O’Connell was killed. A Carlos Medina was arrested after an hour long stand- off.

So.. Florida is talking about giving tax breaks to those that use gas stoves. Studies have just shown the dangers of gas stoves and 92% of stoves in Florida are electric. The powers that be seem to like the elderly to live on the edge.

Toronto Mayor John Tory is resigning after a relationship with an employee.
*****
So, millions were spent on Superbowl ads for Jesus. I think Jesus may have spent the money on the homeless or medicine for the poor but what do I know?** Did anyone think they would see the day that a show about crystal would sell chips?

The Grammy’s came and went again. The best dressed to me were Shania Twain, Sam Smith, Cardi B. and Harry Styles. This was the first time a grammy went to a video game soundtrack.
*****
The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl.** Musk and Murdoch were a filthy rich but sorry looking pair.
*****
Let’s never forget Brooklyn, Il., the first town founded by blacks.
*****
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are going on tour.
*****
Is this true? Do guys hang boots on erections? Is that a thing?
*****
How did the health departments ever approve restaurants with peanut shells on the floor? That can’t be a good thing.
*****
Former Governor and U N ambassador Nikki Haley has announced her Presidential run. First, she was a never Trumper then worked for him then bitched about him. She is just the first to line up to run against Trump for the Republican nom. Will he ever accept the results anyway??

25 February 2023: Foolish Seasons, Dana Gillespie. (2022 Decca/Universal reissue of 1968 U.S./Canada London release)
Dana Gillespie is perhaps most widely remembered today as being in David Bowie’s circle in the early ’70s, co-managed with him by Tony Defries of MainMan Management. A couple of posts ago, I describe the 1971 BOWPROMO, a promotional record with one side of Bowie tracks and one of Gillespie songs meant to help them secure record deals. They’d both recorded albums prior to entering the Defries realm, and here I am posting her 1968 debut album Foolish Seasons. I took an interest in Gillespie’s solo material after hearing a June 1971 Peel Session on the Divine Symmetry: The Journey to Hunky Dory box also discussed in that post I mention above. That session, credited to David Bowie and Friends, comes from a period when Bowie saw himself as the ringmaster and songwriter for a variety of artists that wouldn’t necessarily have him as the main performer. Gillespie there sings Bowie’s composition “Andy Warhol,” and I found it compelling enough that I wanted to hear more of her work. I secured a sealed original of her 1974 third album Weren’t Born a Man, which includes a studio version of her doing “Andy Warhol,” but even though sealed the album itself and all of its interior packaging were destroyed by water that had seeped through, magically leaving the album cover intact but wrecking everything inside it. I didn’t expect to, but I got a refund for that purchase. Meanwhile I pacify myself with this Record Store Day reissue of her debut, which includes two bonus tracks. I know it will be a much different sort of thing than MainMan-era Gillespie, but I’m interested to find out.
Above are the front cover, hype sticker, and back cover.
Below is the opened gatefold.

Here is side one’s label.

Here are both sides of the inner sleeve, a replica of original Decca sleeves from the late ’60s. Stereo albums received blue inners; mono pressings got red inners. If I am not mistaken, Decca album covers included a small hole that you could see the color through and determine what pressing you were holding. All of the 1960s Decca trappings are slightly anachronistic for this album; in the UK, Gillespie’s home country, Foolish Seasons never made it past Decca Records’ promo-copy phase in 1968, receiving release only in the U.S. and Canada on the affiliated London Records. This edition, then, is the first time the album received a commercial vinyl release in the UK (a CD was released there in 2006). Decca had previously decided to go with Gillespie’s original request to focus on her self-penned work, shelving Foolish Seasons (which had only four Gillespie compositions alongside 11 covers) in favor of the 1969 Box of Surprises, entirely composed by Gillespie.

Just for kicks, here is a replica of a Decca red mono inner. This comes from a reissue of her pal David Bowie’s 1967 debut album David Bowie. While they were both signed to Decca, Bowie’s record was released by its Deram subsidiary. The Gillespie reissue above does not have the cutouts on its inners showing the label like the Bowie issue below does; I’ve got no idea which is historically accurate.

For whatever reason, the cover art of Foolish Seasons was changed for this reissue. Below you can see the original front cover, and if you wish to see the original back cover and gatefold design you may do so at Discogs, where I retrieved the picture below:

Gillespie never stopped performing. Her most recent album is 2021′s Deep Pockets.

TELECLERE ‘AFFECTION/DEFECTION’ (1983)
A central figure in Seattle’s fading disco scene, radio DJ, producer, engineer, writer and multi-instrumentalist…Tony Benton was the driving force behind the Seattle soul-funk sound during the late 70s & 80s. Starting off his career at the age of ten he learned how to play the piano and then finally got to take a music class in the 7th grade. Having access to an electric piano made him fall in love with the thought that he could make his own music. At the age of 16 Tony and his friends already formed their first band called 'Crystal Clear' and were making up songs in his basement.
Things would really start of when Tony Benton teamed up with his group to form the avant-boogie group Teleclere who went on to release their first single in 1982 (Fantasy Love / Ultra Groove). That’s when Tony started playing all of the other instruments and thus earning him the title ‘multi-instrumentalist’. Teleclere was all about creating and performing original music, there was no music scene in Seattle at that time for a black artist or group who played original compositions. Rap-music was also emerging and clubs slowly started to switch from live performances to deejays.
Through the success of their independent EP release, Teleclere followed up a year later with their Affection/Defection album which created a serious hype. This gave them the chance to regularly open at concerts for national artists in halls and clubs. They played at nightclubs, bars, festivals, private parties and did mini tours in the Washington State cities & Canada…including opening for Grammy-award winning soul-star Peabo Bryson (performing for a crowd of 3,000 in their hometown Seattle)
Sadly, radio would not play their music so folks never really had the chance to hear it unless they saw them perform live (they always won the crowd over). To add insult to injury, venues and the likes started to mainly book cover bands playing top 40 music. Disappointed by this Tony Benton became a radio personality but would continue to record and perform under the name 'Teleclere' with various players and vocalists for many years to come. Only a handful of his tracks recorded were released in the end.
Thankfully we are left with the unique audio-document that is the Affection/Defection LP. The album took the scene by storm in 1983 and sounds like a sci-fi space odyssey unfolding on an intergalactic dance floor…a chopped and slapped slice of 80ies electro-funk, sensual soulful serenades, pulses of Innervisions-worthy bass, top of the line vocals and a plethora of vocoder magic. Also included is the hit ‘Steal Your Love’ that was featured on the acclaimed 2014 Light In The Attic compilation ‘Wheedle’s Groove Volume II: Seattle Funk, Modern Soul And Boogie 1972-1987’.
Tidal Waves Music (in collaboration with the Numero Group) now proudly presents the first ever vinyl reissue of this fantastic private pressed Seattle electronic soul/funk album (originally released in 1983 on Telemusic Productions). This rare record (original copies tend to go for large amounts on the secondary market) is now finally back available as a limited 180g vinyl edition (500 copies) complete with the original artwork and obi strip.
