A response video to hbomberguy's latest (on plagiarism) that might actually be helpful to folks
Don't be like James Somerton. Advice on citations and plagiarism.
Eye contact. Auto-generated captions. ~ 30 minutes.
Summary: A professional archeologist and academic talks about how citations are done in professional academic settings, when you need cite your sources, and gives advice on how to adapt these basic principles to the format of a YouTube video.
(PS: gives a couple of shout-outs to @theabigailthorn as someone who consistently does it right)

Does anyone remember MirrorMask ?
Like I had this very weird memory of this film and for a LONG time I couldn't find absolutely anything about it. I remembered the scene in the circus with the ambulance, the dark daughter look and- I think I always thought it was something Alice related (eating at a table, weird imagery, fantasy etc.), and then the final scene with the painted door/window on the roof
BUT THEN-
This lovely person did a video essay
youtube
And ALL the memories came flooding back (and of course Neil G was involved in this story)
And I have no idea if anyone else remembers this film

After watching that short this Anon recommended, YouTube recommended the full video to me and OMG I might have not watched such an accurate video about Greece in a very long time! And in fact, a few are accurate indeed but this one had some deeper understanding of the culture and the people and it was so refreshing. Also I was screaming because at some points he said the exact same things I answered in that mail and it was awesome to see such a similar understanding of Greece between a Greek and a non-Greek. i was also so pleased to see all the positive comments from Greeks - that doesn’t happen often so it must account for something. I really recommend it if you want something informational or discourse-like to watch about Greece:
youtube
I was also moved by the sentiment and the passion of this man for a culture, affiliated but still different than his own, this is quite noble of him. And I felt sorry when he revealed he was initially worried to say he is Iranian in Greece because he had believed all this western projection that Ancient Greeks were fighting the Persians in order to defend the “whiteness” or “Europe”, no my friend, the Greeks were defending their homes and their lands from an invasion like most would do. People confuse (or maybe consciously misinterpret) the result for an intention. The Greek defence (and much later counter-attack) did create many obstacles and eventually prevented Persians from passing and expanding to Europe. But that was the consequence, not the intent.

Dude I just found this video that's an iceberg of public access tv. In the first THREE MINUTES there's been:
A rude psychic who doesn't actually tell people's fortunes, instead hanging up on them if "their vibes are bad" (which applies to everyone)
A wholesome drag queen cooking show where all she cooks are bananas and she has paper mache tits
An anarchist punk who said "oops, my anarchy symbol!" when his desk-pounding led to his hand-drawn sign falling down
This is all in tier 1 btw, out of 6 tiers total. I think I just found my new favorite video lol

Fuck it here's all my favorite video essays by essayist Jacob Geller
The False Evolution of Execution Methods
Fear of Big Things Underwater
Perfect Moments in "Bad" Movies
The Golem and The Jewish Superhero
Art Restoration (And The Biggest Mod in Resident Evil History)
If I could I would put every one of his videos on here, but i highly encourage anyone who wants to reblog with their own favorites from his body of work (or from another essayist you might want to share)

Today an excellent video was recommended to me on YouTube about homonationalism. It came at the perfect time too, because I honestly had never heard of the term until the genocide started.
The fact that it’s from one year ago too is just the icing on the cake.
youtube
It’s very easy to understand and I recommend to people who wanna understand better what homonationalism is and why queers in the army isn’t as liberating and progressive as people think it is.

The opening of Philosophy Tube's I Emailed My Doctor 133 Times: The Crisis In the British Healthcare System
An amazing video that I want to recommend anyone interested in trans healthcare, the NHS, philosophy, the problem with changing large systems, impeccably styled video essays, or all of the above.
[id: The camera pans across a desk holding several brown envelopes, an old-fashioned military cap, a book titled Complaint!, and a laptop. Cut to Abigail Thorn in an old-fashioned military uniform and fitting styling violently smashing the laptop with a hammer before facing the camera and saying, "Hello, my name's Abigail. Over the last few years, I have emailed Britain's national healtcare provider 133 times, trying to get a doctor's appointment." She then stares into the camera silently.]
