Star Trek Continues

I usually volunteer for Salt Lake's Comic Con (now called FanX). However, the first year the event was held, I paid to attend as a guest and it was amazing!

Among the special guests that week were Vic Mignogna and Grant Imahara talking about their new, fanfic (fan fiction), not-for-profit project, Star Trek Continues. They even brought along their first episode to show. They returned to show us more in subsequent conventions.

In the years since, they have finished the project – completing the 5-year mission of the Starship Enterprise from Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS) in eleven epic episodes! This was necessary because NBC killed the series after only three seasons back in 1969! (In keeping with the 1960s production timeline of TOS, they use – for example – an old news clip from 1968 of Apollo 8 in the first episode.)

This is an outstanding series that has won many accolades and awards. The care, attention to detail, and dedication of this team is truly remarkable! They even got an enthusiastic endorsement from Gene Roddenberry's son!

Our pandemic isolation has allowed me to catch up with Vic's TOS project and he and his team did not disappoint. I highly recommend watching the series, now available on YouTube for FREE! (Links below)

Wikipedia says:

Star Trek Continues is an American fan-created web series set in the Star Trek universe. Produced by the non-profit charity Trek Continues, Inc. and Dracogen, and initially co-produced by Far from Home LLC and Farragut Films, the series consists of eleven episodes released between 2013 and 2017. The series is an unofficial direct continuation of Star Trek: The Original Series and emulates its visual and storytelling features to achieve the same look and feel. Those who made the show have said in interviews that the intent was to finish the original five year mission of the show, and this is borne out in the plot lines of the final two episodes.

As with all such Star Trek fan productions, use of copyrighted and trademarked properties from the original series was allowed so long as the production was non-commercial. A portion of the funds necessary to produce the episodes was raised through successful Kickstarter and Indiegogo campaigns, to which thousands of backers contributed.

Star Trek Continues won a Webby Award for "People's Choice – Long Form Drama" in 2016, a Geekie Award for "Best Web Series" in 2014, and numerous Telly and Accolade awards. The series was very positively received by critics, who praised the quality of the production and stated that the show set a new standard for Star Trek fan films.

After the 11th episode was released in late 2017, the Star Trek Continues series ended.

On July 31, 2014, Rod Roddenberry attended an official screening of "Fairest of Them All" (Episode 3) in Las Vegas and endorsed the project stating: "I do have to say, and I said this after 'Lolani', I'm pretty damn sure my dad would consider this canon. The fact that you do stories that mean something, that have depth, that make us all think a little bit, I really think he would applaud you guys, and I applaud you guys, and as far as I am concerned, it is canon. Vic mignogna

Is just a loving person who is big on hugs and kisses (if you don’t like that don’t go to Italy then.....). I’ve looked over many videos of him with fans , some of which he gave kisses on the cheek. None of which were done in ways that flagged me as pedo. Don’t ruin this mans career on if you felt uncomfortable because of it. Should he be more aware and ask?heck yes! I agree, but I’ve yet to see evidence of a darker side to this and would welcome it if given some and I’d gladly change my mind, but of yet I’ve found nothing that screams bad and word of mouth is not enough in our digital age. Sorry for the small rant. I admire Vic and met him twice as a young girl. I remember he hugged tightly and was touchy but I am a huggy person myself and it did not bother me. He was very kind and great with fans. I’m sad to see him getting this backlash. Remember to really look into things before blindly reblogging. I’m still looking into this too but ya....just wanted to say my bit about it.

I miss the simpler days.

The ones where Vic Mignogna and Todd Haberkorn and Monica Rial were my childhood heroes, and no one would fault me for that.

It was only yesterday when my ten-year-old self plopped myself down in front of the tv to watch my favorite shows.

I thought to myself how I wanted to be just like the man who breathed life into, not only his character, but my childhood as well. The man who cares for and loves his fans from the bottom of his heart. And another who’s funny voices could lift my spirits anyday. He taught me that hard work and dedication will get you anywhere. And the woman who’s voice became nearly more familiar than my own. The one who made me realize that my young voice was an asset rather than something to be ashamed or embarrassed of.

Now I sit in tears as I watch my heroes slowly get torn into pieces by the very people they loved and inspired.

My call of neutrality will surely be lost in the sea of opinions. I know that, and yet I still hope that this somehow reaches at least one of my childhood heroes.

To Todd Haberkorn, Monica Rial, and Vic Mignogna. I hope things all work out in the end. I hope that you manage to find happiness. I hope that the truth, whatever it is, frees you from this turmoil and allows you to do what you love. I want each of you to know that you guys have helped to shape me into the person I am today more than you may ever realize. I had hoped that one day I could share a stage with all three of you. It might be presumptuous of me but I still hope for that. To work along side my heroes doing what they inspired me to achieve. That is my dream. A dream that seems to be growing dimmer by the day as this storm tears it’s way across the nation. Here’s to hoping that you all weather that storm.

So, due to my #KickVic stance, my Twitter was harassed until it was disabled. Haha! #NotEvenMad That certainly proves my point that you #IStandWithVic Stans are absolute garbage. But here is the hilarious tale, in a summery. @dominique_skye was joking with mutual friends on Twitter that she and I put the Fun in the Funimation HR Department, and that THIS photo sums up the case-file of our internal investigation on Vic. This is clearly a joke because Dominique and I both have our separate careers listed, and live in different states, and clearly do NOT work for Funimation. And THESE VIC STANS TOOK HER SERIOUSLY! So now we have dozens of tweets popping off about how clearly biased the investigation that lead to his termination was. I kid you not, these Stans think Dominique and I were the deciding factor of Vic’s termination with Funimation! And they CAME for my account in the middle of the night. While I was sleeping, they reported my account and tweets, and I woke up to an email received at 3:20am telling my my account is permanently suspended. Imagine my half-asleep-dazed-confusion of...what? Lol. Dominique filled me in, in the morning, with screengrabs of all the nonsense. So the summery is, the supporters of Vic are SO STUPID and will believe ANYTHING that fits their narrative, that they attacked and had the twitter taken down of a random woman from New York who works as Quality Assurance in a Candy Factory, because her stance on the #KickVic situation didn’t mesh with the imaginary scenario they subscribe to. 😂😂 So here is my statement: I do not, nor have I ever, work for @funimation . And I had nothing to do with #vicmignogna getting fired from any company or convention appearance. I am firmly on the side of #KickVic because I have met him and he is awful. I stand with @jamiemarchi and @rialisms and all the other victims and people (many who DO work with and for Funimation) who have spoken out and faced harassment. The deactivation of my Twitter is why victims don’t come forward, and why witnesses don’t speak out. You all don’t want the truth.
