Linh Peony as a Fan Fiction Writer
—————
[SPOILERS FOR THE LUNAR CHRONICLES]
i headcanon peony as a fic writer and she definitely had a blog dedicated to writing kai x reader fics and iko probably read them all:
• iko 100% brainstormed for fic ideas and peony always went ahead to write them. just…iko and peony geeking over kai x reader fics
• peony once wrote a prince kai x cyborg!reader and made cinder read it to try and get cinder on the fandom :))
• pearl was def not impressed, more so when peony made an oc named perla and made that oc the bad person in her fics (she was careful to not let pearl find out so peony made a new account)
• PEONY IS OUR BELOVED FANGIRL QUEEN.
• ok about the cyborg!reader: peony wrote that kai met the reader in a store booth
• “what if the reader — not cinder — hypothetically met prince kai in a store booth?”
• which made peony ship cinder and kai a bit more when cinder said she met kai :))
• i don’t wanna imagine peony as the one who ‘gets in their way’ so if she lived and met the rest of the crew, she — along with iko and thorne — would start a blog dedicated to kaider and make daily updates in it <3
• i think she’d be a bit jealous at first but as she got older she’d just laugh it off? i mean, she was fourteen and kai was eighteen so
• SO YEAH PEONY BEING A FANFIC WRITER.

i have this headcanon that when they were younger, peony liked to paint her hand and make it look like a cyborg one. of course, she only did this whenever adri and pearl were away.
cinder and iko only had each other back then, and cinder was a little cautious about everyone else so imagine her surprise when her nine year old stepsister walks up to her with a messy painted hand and a toothy grin :’))

Two unsuspecting people in gray hoodies stepped into the amusement park, tickets in their pockets. They didn’t dare to take off their hood nor look at each other. After all, if the young rulers of the Eastern Commonwealth were to be spotted together, opinions about them would be bound to change.
But it was the nineteenth of December, and they wanted to spend Cinder’s birthday alone before the grand party. And Cinder just knew this was a lot better than some lavish party held in a vast space.
Kai took Cinder’s hand in his and led her to one stall selling funky oversized sunglasses. Cinder took a cheap normal-looking one for herself, but Kai objected.
“Don’t be such a killjoy,” said Kai in a gruff voice, not wanting his voice to be recognized. Cinder couldn’t help but laugh, but it faltered as soon as Kai handed her sunglasses in the shape of two pineapples. “Put these on instead.”
“Ew, no.”
“Shut up, put them on.” Laughing, Kai put it on her before she could say anything else. “Now you look like you could be Miss Hawaiian Tropic.”
“Great, then you wear these sun ones,” said Cinder as she handed Kai sunglasses with the rays of sun peeking out, but Kai was wearing something with LED lights.
“I look good, eh?”
“Nerd,” muttered Cinder.
“Says the mechanic,” Kai retorted. “Well, you said yes to this nerd so you’re stuck with this nerd. No refunds, sorry. Oh — wait, the lights hurt my eyes.”
He took off the flashing glasses and took the ones with the sun on Cinder’s hand. “How do I look?”
“Hot,” answered Cinder.
“Thank you,” said Kai dramatically with a exaggerated bow.
“Hot in the sense that I want you to stay away from me as far as you can.”
“That’s harsh,” said Kai, throwing his head back in laughter. He made to took off the glasses but Cinder pushed them back on.
“No, no. You’re wearing those glasses.”
“She approves!” he cheered. The storekeeper narrowed their eyes at them. The two kept their mouth shut the rest of the way as they handed Thorne’s card. They couldn’t risk paying with their chips.
As the woman processed stuff, Cinder sniggered, leaning into Kai’s ear to whisper. “Thorne’s always draining us. This is retaliation.”
The woman handed back their card, and Kai took Cinder to the wig shop, where they both bought colorful wigs. Kai put on a short blonde wig while Cinder wore a cheap long vibrant green one that fell to her waist.
“Hey, I like that one.”
“Good. Wanna exchange?”
“Yes, please.”
Once they were all set, they went to the photo booth. Kai pulled off his hood, letting out a long breath of relief. Cinder did the same.
“Hey, you kinda look like Cress in that wig.”
“Yeah, and you kinda look like one of the Lunar aristocrats in court.”
“Bully,” said Kai, sticking his tongue out.
“Dork.”
The two laughed as they activated the photo booth. They were given a few seconds to prepare themselves, which they spent fixing each other’s wigs. On the fourth picture, Kai raised Cinder’s left hand, showing off the ring he got her and of course, showing off his favorite person.
“So, where to next?” Cinder asked, unrecognizable under the short blonde wig and pineapple sunglasses. She stuffed her left hand back to her pocket before adjusting her wig.
“Ooh, the ones with the darts look pretty interesting. They’ve got a prize for a bear, too.”
“Then let’s go there.” This time, Cinder took his hand as they trudged their way towards the colorful booth with moving targets. A man in his fifties stood behind the counter as a twelve year old kid failed to shoot his fifth dart.
“Welcome to the Art of the Dart,” said the man lamely, lighting his cigarette. “Ten univs for five darts. Shoot all five and you can pick your prize.”
Cinder watched as Kai took Thorne’s card from her and handed it to the man, who probably thought it was suspicious to pay in card instead of chip. “Mr. Thorne?”
“Yep, that is me.”
Cinder kept herself silent — despite wanting to laugh hard — as Kai took the card back. He looked hilarious in a vibrant green wig and sun shades. “You’re literally wearing sun glasses.”
“I know,” said Kai, grinning. “Now, watch me win you that big bear.”
“Actually, a new wrench would do.”
“This is a carnival, why would they have a wrench?”
“I don’t know, good will?”
“I’m getting you that bear, just you wait.”
“Sure you will,” said Cinder encouragingly as she took her seat on one of the stools. The man handed Kai five darts, and Cinder realized with a start that she was starving. “Do you want some hotdogs?”
“Sure,” said Kai, preparing himself to aim. “What about cotton candy?”
“We’ll get some after that. I’ll get us both hotdogs first.”
Kai only nodded as Cinder took the card from him and went ahead to get some hotdogs. There was kind of a long line, but she can wait. She kept her head down in fear of being recognized. When it was finally her turn to order, she spoke in a high-pitched voice. “Two, please. Yes, with the bread.”
Realizing her left hand was bare, she fumbled for her gloves in her pocket. To her dismay and mounting fear, she forgot to bring them. Screw it, she thought. Cinder reached out with her both hands when she grabbed the small gray containers where the two hotdogs lay.
The seller didn’t seem to mind much less notice. Relieved, Cinder walked back to the dart booth. She could see from afar Kai was still aiming. As she came nearer, she spotted a box of darts on the table, and he dug his hand to grab more. He took a few steps back and threw. The dart didn’t even hit anything.
Cinder put the hotdogs right next to the box. “Woah, did you buy all those?”
“No, just twenty more of them. I’ve used up fifteen after the . . . Sh!” He aimed again. It didn’t hit anything.
“Kai, it’s okay. Let’s go.”
“No, I have six more darts! I have a feeling that this is really it.”
“Alright, shoot that one and I’ll try.”
Kai obliged. This time, he scored a low point. “There!” he cheered. “Give me turtle plushie keychain, pal. I mean — sir.”
The man simply snatched something small from behind the desk and put it on the counter. Kai took it and stuffed it into his pockets, which Cinder realized was bulging. “Did you win many of those?”
“Yeah!” answered Kai. “Now, your turn. You’re gonna want to aim —”
But before he could finish his sentence, Cinder had threw the dart already, landing in the middle of the target. The man dropped his cigarette, staring in disbelief. He wasn’t the only one shocked — Kai had shut himself up.
Cinder threw another one, scored; another one, scored; another one, scored; and another one, scored.
“Big teddy bear, please,” she said to the man. “Oh, and eat your hotdog before it gets cold.”
The man handed a gigantic fluffy object through the counter. Children eyed it enviously, and more people came to the booth. Cinder shoved the bear against his chest, beckoning him to carry it as she carried the two hotdogs, leading them away from the crowd and into a deserted bench. “Let’s eat first.”
“That was unfair,” Kai pouted.
“Thank you, I had a lot of practice with my tranquilizers.”
Laughing, they both ate in peace, the bear in Kai’s lap. “Sorry I couldn’t get you the bear.”
“Oh, quit it. You can keep the bear, make it an ‘I Love Cyborgs’ shirt if you want to.”
“I know you’re joking, but I really want to.”
The two launched into fits of laughter again as they proceeded to eat. Halfway through, though, Cinder’s portscreen rang, a video comm from Thorne. When she answered, he was arranging something on the Rampion ship.
When he turned back to face them, he jumped in surprise at the sight of a girl wearing a short blonde wig and pineapple sunglasses. “Cinder?”
“Hi,” she said lamely.
“Ho-ho-ho, he got you to wear pineapple glasses. Nice touch, Kai!”
Cinder turned the camera to Kai, who was busy eating still. “Thanks, it was hard to get her to —”
“What’s this about a hundred univs on darts?!” yelled Thorne. “You’re the emperor! You can —”
“I’ll pay you back with a hundred and twenty univs plus a plaque that says ‘captain’ on both sides.”
“— rest assured that I feel honored to serve the Commonwealth.”
“Thought so,” said Kai, winking at Cinder, who turned the screen back to her.
“Anyway, we have to go now. Time for rides.”
“I see quality time with your uncle is —”
Cinder pressed end comm, putting her portscreen back in her pocket. “He will not let that go!” said Cinder to Kai. “Alright, come on.”
“Rides then cotton candy, right?”
“Right.” Cinder said, waiting for Kai to catch up as he carried his huge teddy bear. On their way to the Ferris Wheel, kids watched and pointed at the big teddy bear in his hand.
“You must be enjoying this attention,” said Cinder, grinning and taking pride at her prize.
“Trust me, the only attention I want is yours.” With that, they fell in line for the Ferris Wheel, eager to take off their wigs once at the top. But right now, they didn’t mind just standing next to each other, enjoying the feeling of being just another couple in a crowd full of hopeful and excited people on a night as lovely as this.
