another interesting angle about wyb’s hat during the GQ event. i looked up both cpf and so/o wardrobe accounts and i didn’t see them identify where the hat came from. everything else tho was chanel, and the suit was dunhill which the brand themselves posted about. we didn’t think too much about it at the time cause we were too busy connecting it to luffy and other things.

now a post from fans & a little bit of detective work tells us where it could possibly come from. a fan posted about a hat store (hat of cain) in raffles hotel where xz stayed and took photos for his ralph’s club event. they look v close to what wyb wore.

if you go back to xzs vlog, there is a cut (p3) where you see downstairs from XZ is. people are saying that it is close to where the shop is. so that was a little clue from them. we have talked about how it appeared out of character for xzs to post a vlog in the midst of all the GQ event noise. they could easily post it the next day or even the weekend so it will go on hot search or better yet, so he won’t be accused of trying to steal the spotlight from other celebrities. no we think we know why. and why he was trying to match ybo’s caption. it’s him ( allegedly ) trying to say that he was responsible for WYB’s fashion accessory of the day. in his own way, showing off the same way that wyb was. 🤍

I’M SORRY XZ & XZS, we didn’t catch up on that hint sooner. We could only do so much investigative work. Lol. We will be better next time 😌😌😌😌

You can visit their IG to compare and see for yourself how similar it is to what WYB wore. I also looked up their website and Raffles Hotel was listed as one of the locations that have their store. You can even see one of their ig posts that talks about their product and a detail inside the hat ( p3 is yibo and p4 is the ig post ) is the same as yibo’s. I’m not an expert so i don’t know if this is a standard when making all hats with the same material but i have to say that the similarity is v interesting.

You have XZ who was recently in Singapore. Very publicly at that and it was not a secret that he stayed at Raffles Hotel. At this time, the theme of GQ MOTY was already set and they have already given the theme of the guest having to walk on land & water and not just your usual red carpet. Maybe XZ picked it cause he knew how much WYB loves hats. It could also be to match what he would be doing for his public event where he is the Guest of Honor.

Then WYB comes in and showed off this hat. We were all thinking it’s One Piece & Luffy coded, which it could be, but we’re now only realizing the deeper meaning. Why he was so attached to it too. YBO released a bts video earlier 12/9 and WYB was joking that he had a hat too like the one rowing, so that means he can also row the boat. Turns out, the style he was wearing is called a boater hat. So it fits. XZ bought it for him as a souvenir that he knew WYB would like, with the thought of the GQ event’s theme.

Maybe XZ wasn’t even implying that WYB wear it that prominently. He just thought of WYB when he saw it and being the person that he is thought that it would be a good accessory for a photoshoot related to WYB’s public event. Maybe he can explore parts of the old town venue and get some shots of him with it. However, much like WYB loves to show off things that XZ gave him, it became his main accessory for the day ( not my words, YBO said that in their caption lol ).

Lastly, I remember one of XZ’s staff was holding a raffles paper bag when they were going home. What’s on it that he had to hold it for safekeeping? If the shop was in the Raffles Boutique, wouldn’t a thing bought from there use the hotel’s paper bag? Wouldn’t you want to hand carry a hat like that in case it gets deformed when shoved in a suitcase?

Anyway, this is all a coincidence 👀👀👀

On the 6th October Mile posted quite a few 'random' IGS on his side account.

Among them two pictures I wanna talk about:

1. About the red building?

He posted this lamps:

A week prior someone shared a clip from inside the red building, where we can see the back of two men who look like Mile & Apo. Fans debated whether they are or not on Twitter, however besides that there is a thing that I wanted to point out: The lamps.

May or may not be the same lamps, but very similar style.

So did Mile share the lamps of the red building? Maybe from a different floor?

Was he shopping there with someone?

I think we all know that Mile & Apo like to go shopping at the red building in Bangkok quite often.

2. Another thing I noticed is about this pic from his 'random' side account stories:

So he was at a place where candles were being dipped. Maybe even dipped some himself?

Today Apo shared this on his main:

From a place with handmade candles, the one in the middle the exact color as the wax from Mile's pic...

So fun thing. I am redesigning Milk Tea (again) for two main reasons:

1. Her first design and redesign were on her old story, where she had spent her life in the Dark Cacao kingdom and even became a disciple. I made her Cacaonian and Milk Tribe fashion her main focus. However, in her rewrite, she lives in the Creme Republic's Lower City. So im making her design more 'republican' (and weirdly enough 1950s inspired too). She is still from the Milk Tribe, she just has a funny taste in style ig

2. You guys probably know them but there is already another milk tea flavored cookie oc that has a very similar silhouette and color scheme to mine. Which is a very funny coincidence but also makes me want to redesign her so she can be different (plus i love designing so im not really losing)

So yea those are the two main reason. I was putting off for a while because i had a mentality that 'you could only redesign a character once' but then i remembered that literally nobody cares nor do i so yea-

Late Stage Swiftgron Part 2 (things get loud with babe):

April 18, 2018 - Dianna posts to Instagram about “commitment issues”:

April 20, 2018 - Babe (a song that Taylor wrote in the Red era) about a lover with shall we say “commitment issues”.

Later when the Babe music video is released people (even non Gaylors) notice that it is nearly a shot for shot remake of the I’m Not The Only One music video that Dianna starred in back in 2014.

What’s more psychotic is that the song Babe itself is only three minutes and 35 seconds long:

But the music video has had a full minute and 4 seconds to it to make it the exact same length as the I’m Not The Only One music video. I do think that this is pretty hard evidence that Dianna did step out on Taylor at some point back in 2012. I do not think, however, that it was the chronic issue that the fandom seems to think it was. This is the only song that appears to be about Dianna that accuses her of cheating. The breakup songs on 1989 do not insinuate that the relationship ended due to cheating. In fact, in Style Taylor says “I’ve been there too a few times” when it comes to being with other people.

I actually theorize that the track was not released on Red because Taylor wrote it while upset and hurt, and then they reconciled and worked it out. I think Taylor didn’t release it at the time because she forgave Dianna for the indiscretion and they moved on from it as a couple. I think in her heart of hearts at the time Taylor did not want to put Dianna “on blast” that way.

I think down the road in 2018 they’re obviously long broken up, and have long moved on from the slights of old and Taylor let Dianna know she was going to release the song. Dianna’s “commitment issues” post makes it seem as if it’s a bit of an inside joke between them and Dianna is poking fun at herself and the old and forgiven incident. At least that’s how the situation reads to me.

Another theory I’ve been mulling over is the possibility that Dianna and Taylor hooked up some time in 2018 prompting Taylor to paint herself as the other woman (as Dianna would be cheating on Winston making Taylor the other woman) in the mv. There’s no hard evidence for it but it’s possible...

June 6, 2018 - Dianna posts a now deleted selfie and rant about how amazing KIlling Eve is (this post was deleted late summer/early fall 2020 for no apparent reason):

It’s probably a coincidence but her shirt reads, “SANS SOLEIL” which means, “without sun” in French. Karlie is known as “sunshine” in the Gaylor Swift Cinematic Universe.

June 9, 2018 - The aforementioned Babe music video is released

Reconciliation and Late-Stage Tayliz (September 2014 - Present)

Despite not seeing each other for a while, Taylor and Liz clearly still hold a soft spot in each other’s hearts.

During the Secret Sessions for 1989 in Nashville, fans took pictures in Taylor’s home, and you can clearly see she has photos from Charleston displayed:

When it came time to mend the fences between Taylor and Liz, Claire Callaway was the one who ended up doing it:

This MV has a LOT of parallels to the IKYWT video. The lyrics talk about “staring with a bang” (”took off faster than a green light go”?), and reckless abandon (”this path is reckless”). MV parallels are as follows (thank you @mercuryonparklane for all the help finding this):

So, either Liz is lowkey ripping off Taylor’s work or she’s trying to signal that she was the muse for IKYWT. However, considering Liz is deliberately trying to keep her image separate from Taylor, it doesn’t make any sense that she would try and rip her off. Of course, it could just be a big coincidence...

30 September 2017 - In an interview with The Young Folks, Liz says that STFU and Hold Me is about “getting to that point in a relationship where you’re sick of going around and around talking about the same issue with your partner and it’s time to wave the white flag,” Huett says. “We’ve all been there.”

Of the lyrics “I’m coming from a line of problems / I was born and I became a product” Liz says “I’m not exactly the most polished person. I’d rather be real than perfect and sometimes that means I say things that make people uncomfortable or act out in relationships and test limits, etc… I’m an honest mess but I believe I can and should be loved in light of that. :)”

I still think this song was written about the end of her relationship with Bryan, but it’s still interesting to see how Liz describes herself in relationships.

27 October 2017 - Liz releases H8U

This is another song that I think was written about Bryan. The lyrics reference taking another woman to a Tom Petty concert (Liz LOVES Tom Petty) and generally moving on quickly with another woman, which seems apt for the Bryan/Jillian situation going on.

HOWEVER, the lyrics also reference “our first date two years ago,” which doesn’t make any sense, since Liz and Bryan didn’t break up until 2016 and were together since early 2013. So it could maybe be lyrically about Taylor.

I do think the MV makes a deliberate Taylor reference, though, with the interrupting the wedding scene. Taylor famously had Liz dress as the Bridezilla on the Speak Now album art:

And, at the end of the H8U MV, Liz DOES kiss the blonde bride on the mouth after interrupting her wedding... which is... INTERESTING (especially since Liz is dressed in full RED the whole MV):

I don’t think it’s a stretch to presume Liz could’ve reversed their roles here. IDK.

Based on the “two years and counting” line, as well as the line about a washer and dryer of guitar picks, I’m inclined to believe this is another song about Bryan.

However, it is a really similar sentiment to that Civil Wars song Liz posted back when her and Taylor first ended things, and the line about running to get friends on a side when fighting is very similar to the “you go talk to your friends, talk to my friends talk to me” in WANEGBT and the image in Battle/Let’s Go of all their friends standing around watching them fight. Could go either way.

It also, just from an outside perspective, doesn’t make any sense for Liz to write a breakup song about Bryan blaming herself when it seems very clear to me that they broke up because Bryan wanted to be with Jillian instead. That’s not her fault. So either this is about another breakup (I’d guess Taylor, based on the lyric parallels), or she’s just very very self-loathing and won’t let herself think it’s Bryan’s fault (which both H8U and Nothing Personal don’t suggest to me).

25 November 2016 - Liz posts a video on her IG story about Taylor at the VMAs.

6 December 2019 - Liz talks about That’s What You get with Earmilk and gives an interesting quote:

Huett explains, “This song is about facing myself after a brutal season of running from it... I made a self-destructive choice that hurt someone I really value. The angle of the chorus is really sort of a letter to me after that first long look in the mirror. It SUCKED. However, in owning my shit (and sharing this song) my hope is that listeners might apply the sad lesson without having to learn the hard way, or, if they’ve ever found themselves in the regretful position I was once in, I hope this song can at least make them feel less alone."

So, IN CONCLUSION: Liz got help and worked through her shit and they’re on good terms now. They were possibly working on something together in 2015, although that never saw the light of day as far as we know. Liz seems to maybe be referencing Taylor in her music and MVs, but there’s no way to know for sure. Better Than Revenge on the Speak Now Tour was an iconic moment of sapphic energy, and maybe, just maybe, when Taylor re-records her masters, Liz will sing backup for her again.

Yes, they are not the exact same dress, but we must admit rose sleeves are not a common fashion moment, right? Also a little bit of "I don't like slow motion double vision in rose blush." bet you weren’t expecting my longest rant to be about a single topic

so i’m watching that smartphone isekai. and i have so many problems with it after only two episodes. not like the art style or the characters cuz honestly the characters so far seem pretty okay. but the thing that bugs me the most is just how fucking carefree everyone is. like when this dude dies god’s like “oh shit sorry dude i hit you with lightning on accident, you good” and he’s just like “yeah ig” and god’s like “I would’ve thought you’d be more upset over you dying” and he’s just kinda like “yeah ig”. So as a way of apologizing god sends him into another world with his smartphone :0. and this is like the first example of deus ex machina we get. cuz some random merchant who just happened to be passing by is like “YO DUDE SELL ME YOUR CLOTHES” and he’s just like “that’s a bit weird bro but ok.” and so he sells all his clothes to this dude and in return he gets a new set of clothing and a sack of gold coins. And they never explain why the merchant wanted his clothes. Like they do a transition with the merchant sniffing his clothes as like a joke but that’s all the explanation we get. Then we get introduced to our first of many heroines. Elze and Linze. They’re twins. He saves them from some people trying to mug them or something. and gives them a gold coin. This is an important detail for me to complain about later. He introduces himself as Mochizuki Touya and they point out that that’s not how first and last names usually go and they ask him if he’s from a country that’s totally not japan called Eashen. He doesn’t ever give them a proper answer but they kinda just assume he is. So they all decide to get guild cards together and start adventuring together. So since this dude just got reincarnated here he can’t read. So while they’re looking at quests he points that out. Now this is a sort of medieval isekai. Not much technology. So it’d probably be normal for peasants to be illiterate. BUT DOES THIS FUCKING DUDE SEEM LIKE A PEASANT TO YOU?? HE SAVED TWO RELATIVELY KNOWLEDGEABLE ADVENTURERS FROM A MUGGER AND GAVE THEM A GOLD COIN FROM A SACK OF FUCKING GOLD COINS ON TOP OF THAT. NO MATTER WHAT WAY YOU LOOK AT IT THAT’S FUCKING WEIRD. i’m not even halfway done btw this is still the beginning of episode 1. So they go and defeat a bunch of “one-horned wolves” and after that little venture with no good fight choreography he asks them if they could help him with A) learning to read and write and B) learning magic. They then explain how magic works in this world. Him not knowing how magic works in this world is another point in the possible peasant category. Magic in this world is decided by affinities. If you have an affinity for water magic you can use water magic. If you have an affinity for water and dark magic you can use water and dark and so on and so forth. Sometimes an individual will be able to use null magic or “personal magic” it’s basically magic unique to an individual. Back to elemental affinites. it’s extremely rare for a person to have affinities in three elements. Touya here has all 6. And on top of that he can use all types of Null magic. After that little display some random lady comes in like “oh i need new food for my restaurant and i heard you were a foreigner do you know any Eashen dishes I could use???????” AND HE DOESN’T EVEN STOP TO THINK LIKE “oh wait i’m not actually from there i should just say no” NO HE JUST FUCKING SAYS “hoW AbOuT iCE CrEAm?????” and then he pulls out his phone and Elze and Linze ask what it is and he’s like “Oh it’s a special magical item that only I can use” AND THAT HAS TO BE SO FUCKING EXTREMELY RARE AND VALUABLE LIKE ARE YOU KIDDING. HE DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO USE MAGIC UNTIL A COUPLE MINUTES AGO AND YET YOU JUST ACCEPT THAT HE HAS A UNIQUE MAGIC ITEM THAT ONLY HE CAN USE. FUCKING CALL HIM OUT SAY SOMETHING’S UP WITH HIM. HE’S JUST LETTING EVERYTHING HANG OUT PUNISH HIM FOR THAT FOR FUCKSAKE. I’m gonna stop ranting about how stupid all the characters are and come around to the plots of each episode. THEY FEEL LIKE A BUNCH OF COINCIDENCES TAPED TOGETHER TO FORM A PLOT. LIKE “oh he just happened to see them get mugged in an alley” and by itself that’s completely fine but stacked on top of the fact that HE JUST GOT A SACK OF GOLD COINS BECAUSE A MERCHANT JUST HAPPENED TO SEE HIM WALKING TOWARDS THE TOWN. AND HE USES ONE OF THOSE COINCIDENCE COINS TO GIVE THEM AFTER HE SAVES THEM. AND THEN THE LADY JUST HAPPENS TO SHOW UP AT THE END SO HE COULD WHIP OUT HIS SMARTPHONE AND THEY COULD DO A FUCKING KAWAII ICE CREAM OUTRO. FUCK. AND EVERYTHING GETS WORSE IN EPISODE TWO CUZ THEY MEET A GIRL FROM EASHEN AND SHE INTRODUCES HERSELF THE SAME WAY JAPANESE PEOPLE DO AND HE DOES THE SAME INTRODUCTION BACK AND SHE’S LIKE “OH SHIT ARE YOU FROM EASHEN” AND YOU GOTTA REALIZE, THIS IS HIS OUT, THIS CAN EXPLAIN AWAY ANY JAPANESE TENDENCIES HE HAS BUT HE JUST STAYS VAGUE AND SAYS “NO I’M NOT FROM THERE BUT I’M FROM A VERY SIMILAR COUNTRY” LIKE WHAT THE FUCK DUDE TAKE YOUR FUCKING OUT THAT WAS YOUR ONLY ONE. SO THEY DECIDE TO TEAM UP CUZ THEY NEED TO DELIVER A LETTER TO SOMEONE AND THEY GET ON A CARRIAGE AND TOUYA TELLS LINZE HE WANTS TO STUDY NULL MAGIC SO HE CAN USE MORE OF IT AND HE LEARNS A FEW. ONE CALLED APORTS THAT CAN TELEPORT SMALL ITEMS TO YOUR HAND AND ONE CALLED SLIP THAT CANCELS ALL FRICTION AND BASICALLY JUST MAKES THE PERSON SLIP. HE GETS ONE MORE THAT I CAN’T REMEMBER THE NAME OF AND IT GIVES HIM HEIGHTENED SENSES WHEN OUT OF NOWHERE “OH, I SMEEL BLOOD OVER THERE!!!!!!” AND THEY ALL RUSH OUT AND SAVE THE PEOPLE WHO WERE DYING AND THEN SOME CHICK CALLS OUT TO THEM LIKE “FUCK HELP MY BUTLER’S DYING HE HAS AN ARROW IN HIS CHEST” AND SO THEY GET OVER THERE AND TOUYA’S LIKE “HEY LINZE DO HEALING MAGIC” AND SHE’S LIKE “NO I CAN’T THE ARROW’S LODGED IN THERE IF I USE IT NOW THERE’LL BE A FOREIGN OBJECT STUCK IN HIS CHEST” AND THAT GOT ME THINKING. THAT MEANS SOME IDIOT SNAPPED THE ARROW OFF WHILE IT WAS IN THE BUTLER’S CHEST. THAT’S BASICALLY A DEATH SENTENCE IN THIS WORLD. HEALING MAGIC WON’T COMPLETELY SAVE THEM IF THERE’S STILL A FOREIGN OBJECT IN THEIR CHEST. ONE COULD ARGUE “OH THEN IT MUST’VE BEEN THE ATTACKERS, THEY SNAPPED IT OFF TO ENSURE HE WOULD DIE. THE ONLY ATTACKERS WERE A SUMMONER A BUNCH OF SUMMONED LIZARDMEN!! I DOUBT EITHER THE SUMMONER WOULD THINK IT IMPORTANT ENOUGH THAT THE BUTLER DIE THAT HE’D ORDER THE LIZARDMEN TO SNAP THE ARROW OFF IN HIS CHEST. SO THAT FUCKING MEANS THAT THE ONE WHO BASICALLY FUCKING SENTENCED HER BUTLER TO DEATH WAS THE GIRL WHO CALLED THEM OVER TO HEAL HIM IN THE FIRST PLACE. LUCKILY WE LEARNED THE SOLUTION TO THIS PUZZLE ALREADY AND TOUYA USES APORTS TO PULL THE ARROWHEAD OUT. AND THEN WE LEARN THAT THIS GIRL WHO THEY JUST SAVED JUST HAPPENS TO BE THE DAUGHTER OF THE DUKE. WHICH IS THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE RANKING NOBLE IN THE COUNTRY. SO THEY GO TO HIS HOUSE TO RECEIVE A REWARD FOR SAVING HIS DAUGHTER AND BUTLER, BUT OH NO! TURNS OUT THE DUKE’S WIFE IS BEDRIDDEN DUE TO SOME SEVERE ILLNESS. AND THE REASON HIS DAUGHTER WENT OUT WAS IN HOPES THAT SHE COULD LEARN HER GRANDFATHER’S PERSONAL MAGIC CALLED RECOVERY THAT COULD CURE ANY ILLNESS. WHATEVER SHALL WE DOO- AND FUCKING TOUYA’S JUST LIKE “YO I CAN USE ALL NULL MAGIC” AND HEALS HER AFTER FIVE FUCKING YEARS OF BEING BLIND. LIKE GOOD FOR HER AND ALL BUT IMAGINE HOW ANTICLIMACTIC THAT IS. THEY WERE EXPECTING SOME EPIC JOURNEY WHERE THEIR DAUGHTER WOULD WORK HARD TO OVERCOME AND LEARN THE RECOVERY NULL MAGIC AND FINALLY SAVE HER MOTHER BUT SOME DUDE SWOOPS IN LIKE “OH, UH ... Hello Anon - and thanks for the ask. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? Sadly from the photographs X I don’t think it’s exactly the same hat. The writing appears a little different on the front, but it’s without doubt a very similar style, black, bulky, gold writing and I think a very deliberate choice by Ben to make a point as he often does during heavy bearding.

The interesting thing is when the Daily M referred to M’s hat X on the 12 Feb they called it a trucker hat. Who can forget the quote below.

I checked B’s IG account again this morning and I think there is ONLY one other pic on B’s IG with a hat like this. He’s usually dapper and this is not his usual style so you wonder why he made that particular choice. I found an interesting addition to his post last night on checking his account this morning.

If you look at the his comment on the bottom right in response wesley clouden you can see quite clearly ‘just the trucker cap’.

That’s not a coincidence - a similar style hat and a deliberate reference to M and the DM article. Make no mistake B references her a lot on SM, (the truck purchasing was recent and blatant - maybe that’s the reason for the trucker hats and they are laughing about it - who knows)?

I do wonder why B does this so blatantly again and again because there are other posts like this. Jealously? must be hard to watch your GF pose for paps, doing duck kisses with a man she’s trapped.

Idk - I assume among all this circus B is someone not trapped by NDA’s or contracts. He has the power to change the situation unlike D so I wish he’d just ‘go get his girl’ instead of making these passive agressive posts on social media about a situation he clearly isn’t happy in and give everyone including D their freedom from this mess.

Minimalism: another boring product wealthy people can buy

Minimalism is just another form of conspicuous consumption, a way of saying to the world: Look at me! Look at all of the things I have refused to buy!

I hate minimalism.

I hate it as the incredibly tedious piece of personal performance art it has come to be in our society, but I also hate it as an aesthetic: your white-on-white-on-white life and meticulously crafted wardrobe of only the most wispy products Everlane and Aritzia have to offer are, frankly, a saltine crackers idea of what a Cool Girl would wear.

In terms of its visual merits, or as a capital-S style, the hyper-curated minimalism really only conveys one thing: I wanted to take the very safest route to chic, cut away every possible misstep or risk. I saw the French Girl Chic articles and I was like thats pretty damn homogenous, but smoking tests poorly in focus groups and those occasional striped shirts are too bold. Time to reduce my look even further until literally every item I purchase tells people I could get something more interesting, but I have enough money to choose not to.

Because lets be clear about what the minimalist aesthetic, at least as a personal style choice, actually is: its a way of aping the connotations of simplicity and even, to a degree, asceticism, without actually having to give up those sweet, sweet class signifiers.

Being minimalist in this way Stop wasting money on all that IKEA nonsense! With this $4,000 dining table hand-whittled by a failed novelist in Scandinavia, you will never need another piece of furniture! really just means having enough upfront disposable money to invest in your wardrobe and surroundings. Reducing a wardrobe down to a few painfully elegant cashmere-cotton blend tops is only really possible if you can put down at least $1,000 in one go for the creation of your capsule wardrobe.

The visual cues and undercurrents of moral superiority it apes, the no-makeup makeup because youve bought $250 worth of nigh-invisible Glossier products, the vaguely Japanese home decor because we assume literally anything that isnt crowded with color and pattern is somehow automatically Japanese its all about spending an incredible amount of time and attention to look as if you hadnt thought about it at all.

And these are all fine things! You are allowed to enjoy having precisely 10 sweaters in slightly different shades of taupe, or meticulously keeping your all-white dining set on white open shelves, despite the fact that it clearly implies at least once-weekly dusting of your entire kitchen, but what is #problematic about it is pretending that this is somehow a noble or morally positive way to spend your money.

It is just another form of conspicuous consumption, a way of saying to the world: Look at me! Look at all of the things I have refused to buy, and the incredibly-expensive, sparse items I have deemed worthy instead!

And we are entitled to buy whatever we like, but to pretend that the intentional and costly upfront implications of a minimalist-chic life are anything but privileged posturing is ridiculous. But I believe that we feel these things because the minimalism-as-luxury-good phenomenon is extremely caught up with the minimalism-as-faux-spiritualism phenomenon, which is its own can of farm-to-table, artisanal worms.

Long story short, the past 10 years or so has sold us one of the most oddly logical, yet no less cloying, answers to our hyper-consumerist late capitalism: minimalism as a secular kind of religion, an add-on to the cultures of yoga and green juices and general living well by putting together a tapas platter of cultural and spiritual practices without ever fully committing to one.

The premise of minimalism in this way is very vague, and ever-shifting to accommodate the tastes and stomach for consistency of the individual practitioner, but the overall theory is the same: by paring your life down as actively as possible, you are almost guaranteed to appreciate what remains more, and are likely to pick up some serious wisdom in the process, which usually makes for excellent self-serious Medium content down the road.

There are a million variations fitting all your belongings into a single box, small-house or van living, radical de-cluttering, extreme purges of technology or social activity, etc but they all hold the same vague, usually unspoken level of superiority.

They all imply that they are in some way a moral upgrade from the life of mindless consumerism, and as a bonus, allow you to take on some of the desirable aesthetics and morality of poverty without ever having to be poor. Youre not homeless, youre on the road, doing some chic van-living and following the good weather! Youre not unable to afford basic home goods, youre choosing to pare everything down to a single cardboard box! If life were a video game and there are some scientists who seem to believe it may be minimalist spirituality is a great way to get all the gold coins of poverty without ever having to be one of those icky poor people.

The implication of this kind of minimalism is obvious, and yet it somehow never seems to get addressed: the only people who can practice minimalism in any meaningful way are people upon whom it isnt forced by financial or logistical circumstances.

You cannot choose to declutter if you are already living in a sparse home you cannot afford to furnish. You cannot reduce the food you consume if you are already only able to put one good meal on the table per day. And when nearly half of Americans would be unable to pay their bills if they missed a single check, this forced minimalism is much, much more common than we would like to imagine. We cannot pretend that performative reduction in consumption, or choosing to only consume in certain ways, is not one of the most gratuitous displays of privilege out there, and to frame it as in any way a moral choice is more than a little offensive.

But the truth is that, as with so many other social phenomena that insufferable white dudes have co-opted, this spiritual minimalism has essentially become yet another competition for who can be the best at whatever youve chosen, even if that whatever is literally having less shit.

Even ignoring the class angles, this idea that any decluttering in your life is automatically a positive thing is simply an aesthetic choice being reframed as a moral one because, lets be honest, its really easy to look at a lot of what (mostly) women own as being totally frivolous. Makeup, more-elaborate wardrobes, cozy home decor, art, supplies for hobbies, nice home goods its not a coincidence that most of the stuff were being told to flush away from our lives happens to be stuff that women mostly accumulate.

And, yes, there is a very strong capitalist-critical argument to be made about buying in more intentional and ethical ways, but color me shocked that very few of these minimalist troubadours ever really take things to an economic or class-based argument. Its about reducing for personal enlightenment and pompous blog posts, its not about arguing for a more equitable society in which people consume proportionate to their needs. (If you need a perfect example of this, note the fetishization of the curated simplicity of the ultra-rich: their clean loft spaces, their designer capsule wardrobes, their elaborately reduced diets. These people are still conspicuously consuming in mind-boggling ways, theyre just filtering it through the convenient prism of simplicity, and that allows their million-dollar wardrobes to somehow be aspirational for someone advocating for minimalism.)

The point is, the points being made by the minimalism crew are neither truly spiritual nor truly socioeconomic. Theyre another style, as superficial as anything else that might come down the runway at Fashion Week, just with an added layer of condescension. At the end of the day, we shouldnt kid ourselves: this kind of minimalism is just another boring product that wealthy people can buy.
