hiiii today's reminder is that tiktok about Patrick stump and Br*ndon Ur*e was so brave yet so very true. which brings me to my controversial opinion: hitting/holding a high note does not necessarily equal great vocal technique. don't get me wrong, it's a skill, and definitely impressive esp in men, but to me it just doesn't come close to people who know how to use their voice to sing. for context, i grew up learning a style of indian classical music called carnatic music, which is very heavy on tonal embellishment and very intricate riffs. and this definitely bleeds into mainstream music here. for context here's a song i love that leans into classical elements while still being pop https://youtu.be/zWEOx7TSM6I?si=WEfPpre6FvkrR4WR and this guy is one of the best in the industry, but you do need a very high entry level of this kind of skill to get in. and I love k pop music, i truly do, but there's a definite difference in the level of vocal technique I expect in a k pop song vs a bollywood song, even in the vocal forward ballads. all of which is to say while I do appreciate people who hit the high notes at the end of the bridge, there's people (here's a non-exhaustive list: onew, jonghyun, suho, taeyeon, taeil, doyoung, dokyeom) who know how to use their voices to their best. who know how to play with a simple melody to make it interesting while still keeping it at a level where it remains a balanced group song (which is precisely why I will fight for solo albums for all of these people). and they're all very expressive singers, which I think is the most important part. could they all do carnatic riffs? probably not any time soon, it would take years of training.

Hiii, Oh, Bangchan also said something similar to that and I do agree, holding a high note is definitely a skill within itself but it's not the sole indicator of a great vocalist. Like vocal control and knowing how to work with your voice is really important. I went to a magnet school in elementary, in 5th grade you get the chance to spend the final hour in an elective. So even though I really really wanted dance, I was too self conscious and chose music. And they did not go easy on us 5th graders. So there's so much that goes into vocal practice and training. And you can really tell when someone really mastered their voice as an instrument such as Sir Patrick Stump, vs Brandon who just goes "hey look what I can do". Also like with the singer you sent you can tell that years of training went into creating the control he has on his voice. Also I got so invested in the music video it was all so wonderful. I want to bring up Felix who yes is more of a rapper but his vocal range is unbelievable. Since his voice naturally is very deep the way that he can manipulate it depending on what is needed is amazing. deeper voices tend to not be as versatile. But his is, I would love to see what more vocal training and focus on singing could do for him. I love Onews voice, I love Onew. He's my favorite little guy. SM does have amazing vocalists. I’ve been thinking about this lately and I feel like sharing this thoughts with you guys… just keep in mind is my pure guess :)

BangChan

My first guess on him was Cancer rising; he just gave off a sensitive and caring vibe and also his plump lips are very Cancer like

But after watching a ton of videos, I started seeing Sagittarius in him (more than just his Mars)

That playful/fun side of him

very cheerful

very child-like

that Venus in the 12th house I’ve mentioned before

His 2nd house in Capricorn (earth sign) explaining his very stable vocals

Physically he has those plump lips, athletic and masculine body

So yeah, Sagittarius just seems like a good guess

Woojin 

The first thing that gives it away (at least for me) it’s his voice. 

He has a very airy/flowy and clear voice that only (usually) air signs have.

In this case, he’d have his 2nd house in Gemini, meaning he’s a Taurus rising.

Now, what made me think of Taurus instead of Virgo or Capricorn? 

Well, Taurus tends to have this sleepy kind of eyes (not sure if that makes sense) but it just looks like they’re always sleepy and give off a very chill vibe

It’d also put his Sun in the 12th house, which is probably the reason why people keep sleeping on his talent or at least he doesn’t feel like they’re aware of him (he can give so much more, you’ve heard none of him just yet)

His smile and laugh just scream Gemini to me

(but I can see Virgo and Capricorn in him as well)

My other guess would be Taurus but even Capricorn rising can explain that Taurian energy, if his Sun is in the 2nd house 

He has good face structure, his lips are very Piscean but the Sun in 2nd house can also have some influence since Taurus usually have very nice lips

His 2nd house would be in Aquarius and he has this very soft/airy tone (no wonder why he’s got such a pretty singing voice)

Capricorn also tend to have ‘masculine’ bodies as they tend to take care of it

Han Jisung 

This one is still very tricky for me

As I mentioned before, I can see both Libra and Aquarius

His lips look very Libra like

But I’m going to go with Aquarius for now because he’s extremely social and it’d put his Sun in the 7th house which explains the Libra energy

His 2nd house would be in Pisces which explains how easily he adapts to any type of beat

and how versatile his voice is

1. I have a concept pop into my brain out of nowhere (refer to the post many weeks ago, the one where I first mentioned white wigs and being like Mozart).

So let me tell you about Stray Kids, a K-pop boy group (and before you click off this post, JUST HEAR ME OUT FIRST OKAY, don’t be so judgey) that debuted in 2017 under the management of JYP Entertainment after appearing in their own survival show where, thankfully, they all made the cut. The group is composed by eight wonderful members: Bangchan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin and IN who’re then distributed into three sub-units based on their position inside the group, some of them specialize in vocals, others in dance and three of them are in 3Racha which is the name for the rap sub-unit, but this is mostly a formality because they’re all incredibly talented and can do it all. The latter one is also in charge of writing, composing and producing all of the songs they put out, with the help of other members from time to time. Did I mention that they also choreograph their songs on their own and schedule their comebacks? They pretty much do everything themselves when it comes to music and logistics.

If I were to write out every single reason why I love Stray Kids so much I would be here sitting in front of my computer all week and also I don't want to bore you too much so, unfortunately I’ll have to cut it short, but I think I can narrow it down into two main reasons; the first one being the members themselves. Not only are they literal rays of sunshine (and this is not up for debate) but they’re also extremely inspiring, hardworking and passionate. They had to work their butts off, training for months and some even years to then have to compete against each other just to be able to debut. In fact, Felix and Minho were even kicked out of the survival show at one point which of course took a toll on all of the members, but they kept working as hard as ever and eventually they were brought back and debuted, yay! Also, Felix and Bangchan were born in Australia and Han was living and studying in Malaysia before becoming a trainee, meaning they had to leave their families behind and travel to a whole different country just to pursue their dream of being an artist and if THAT is not the definition of dedication, ladies and gentlemen, then I don’t know what is.

The second reason is of course their music. As I said before, they debuted in 2017 with the song “District 9” which is basically about finding yourself in a world where everyone conforms to social standards, about not letting what others think change who you are, about following your own rules and I think that’s a great message not only for today’s youth but for anyone that is going through a self-discovering journey and is afraid to be their true self. A lot of Stray Kids’ songs are kinda like this one, but they also love to touch on subjects like mental health, friendships and fallouts, growing up and different struggles they have faced in life, with of course the inevitable love song and a diss track here and there to spice things up a bit. I’ll link a Spotify playlist that includes some of my favorite songs at the end of this post if you’re interested in giving them a listen! I highly encourage you to do it though and my personal recommendations are M.I.A, Sunshine, We Go and Ex.

Not only their lyrics are great, but they also have wide variety of musical styles in their repertoire going from soft ballads to extremely hard raps that I wouldn’t even try to learn cause they’re so fast. This proves that Stray Kids is such a versatile group since they’re able to do basically anything you ask them to and they’ll most likely nail it.

I’ll probably leave this here since I think it's getting a little too long but I wanna end off by saying these eight guys literally saved me. They came into my life exactly when I needed it the most and have stayed with me through it all, never failing to cheer me up. It felt like they brought back the light I had lost a long time ago and for that I’ll be eternally grateful. I hope you like them as much as I do, but even if you don’t I hope you find another artist that makes you feel like Stray Kids makes me feel, I hope you find your own Stray Kids.
