Vatyrie Avaris has always been a willful man. This rebellious streak was scorned in the diabolic aristocracy he was born to, a race of tieflings whose loyalty and pride in their infernal blood has allowed them to maintain some of the hellish features and skills of their heritage. Tired of the unforgiving order of demi-devil society and of being a tool for his tyrannical family, Vatyrie sought freedom from the restraints of his nobility. But the price of freedom was greater than he could have imagined. Stripped of his prestige and the infernal magic in his blood by his father’s lash, he was banished. Prejudice and fear taught him to hide his more devilish features, and he has spent the years as an average tiefling, working as a mercenary, bounty hunter, anything to get by. Now he wanders Faerun, never settling for fear of being driven away again.

Commission work by the incredible @darpart of my beloved first DnD character and recent BG3 Tav, Vatyrie Avaris. I am blown away by her work in capturing this bold bastard of a ranger! He is a homebrew tiefling subrace (Demi-devils or purebloods) who have retained more diabolic features and abilities through strict preservation of their infernal bloodlines. As a banished noble, he became a gloomstalker ranger who uses an enchantment on his necklace (depicting the Avaris House crest) to blend in as a normal tiefling.

Job: previously a Paladin of the Order of the Five Stars, but now an oathbreaker working as an independent contractor (sellsword and bounty hunter)

Phobias: basophobia (fear of falling)

Guilty Pleasures: alcohol. She's an emotional drinker, though she doesn't feel guilty about it. She also loves sex, specifically when it's a little rough, and pretty shameless about it (except if her father is in the room. Him calling out her promiscuity is a trigger.)

Alignment: it's complicated. Idril would have said she was lawful good, though didn't know at first that she was being led by a lawful evil cult leader. Morwen is pretty neutral good, though a bit chaotic at times.

Sins: if we're going by the seven, I'd say lust would be one, she has a weakness for a pretty face and flattering words. Of all her sins it's the one she finds hard to control herself with (as soon as there's consent of course). Also wrath, but that's sort of part of the job tbh.

Virtues: as a paladin she was taught to embody the virtues of her Order: Justice, Strength, Faith, Duty, Honour. But now she would revise that to Justice, Honour, Compassion, Mercy, Wisdom, and Acumen. She now highly values critical thinking.

RELATIONSHIPS

OTP : Idril/Morwen is polyamorous, always has been, so an OTP is the antithesis of her relationship style. She has had many loves in her life and will have many more in the future, and they are each just as important to her as the other. She can't pick a favourite, it's impossible.

Acceptable Ships: that's classified Act 3 stuff, sorry 😏 buuuuuut she is pretty open and easygoing as long as her current partners are consenting.

BroTP: I can't fully answer this either, but she did bond with Shadowheart in a sister-like relationship, and she has a lot of love in her for those close to her. She grows close to anyone she works with long-term and gets along well with. Like her romantic relationships, there is no single answer here.

INGRID SULLENBERGER

Deep Gnome — Druid (Circle of the Spores)

Baby:

Parents

Calvin "Sully" Sullenberger: He's an artificer and he works for the Ironhand Gnomes. He doesn't feel that strongly about their mission statement though. He's more self-serving than that. He believes in it, just not enough to die for the cause himself. He prioritizes his own skin first. He loves the fact his current wife hates his ex wife. He enjoys being fought over, even if it hurts his kids in the long run.

Greta Bloodstone: She's Ingrid turned up to 11. She's far more timid and scared, and she gives into her fears. She's the reason Ingrid refuses to let her fear win. She's seen what a doormat it made of her mother. She's a bard who often sings about other people's accolades, except for her own daughter's.

Anna Sullenberger: She's Ingrid's step-mother and Sully's second wife. She never behaved like an actual parent to Ingrid, but she's here on a technicality. Anna is a forest gnome and she hates living in the Underdark. She's convinced she'll change Sully's mind about leaving someday. She tries to use the fact the kids both left as an excuse to move to Baldur's Gate. She's just as self-serving as Sully, she's just more open about it. Anna is a wizard who focuses on illusion.

Birth

Ingrid was born in Silverdale, a deep gnome settlement in the Underdark. It's largely hidden away which is partially why it's still standing.

Greta had a midwife while having Ingrid and it was a traumatic birth. Both survived, but Greta decided she would not have any more children. She felt it would be too dangerous for her. It was a source of contention between her and Sully.

First word / Tantrum / When they first walked / First sickness

Her first word was "Ada." Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe that's the gnomish word for dad. That would have been her first word, just for the man to mostly reject her.

Her first tantrum would have been over a lack of attention, most likely.

She started walking at around 10 months old.

Her first sickness was a cold. She was a baby and miserable, but it wasn't life threatening.

Childhood:

Friends

She didn't have a ton of friends growing up, but she did have some. They send letters to one another.

Bimpnottin Cobblegem (she/they): I saw the name Bimpnottin and decided I needed to have someone in Ingrid's life named this. Bimpnottin is a sweetheart, but naive. They've never left their hometown of Silverdale. Bimpnottin also talks very loudly almost all of the time. She comes from a long line of cobblers and she kept up the tradition.

Gerbo Ironfoot (he/him): He was another childhood friend. He was the kid who talked the others into doing stuff. He wasn't a bad kid, just a little rebellious. He's a fisherman these days and he's married to Orla, a tailor, and they have two kids, Roondar and Dimble.

Umber Rivers (they/them): I'll talk about them in a minute. They weren't a friend in the traditional sense. They were a druid water genasi and the reason Ingrid became a druid.

Siblings

Ingrid has one younger half-brother, Sebastian. His other is a forest gnome and so he looks like a forest gnome. No one immediately pegs them as siblings because of it. I'm still fleshing him out. He is either an artificer, like his father, or a wizard who focuses on transmutation.

Getting into trouble

She rarely got into trouble as a kid. Or, at least, for anything she actually did. Anna was hard on her and would get upset with her over small things, like how she cleaned dishes or something of that nature.

Birthday

I've been waffling on exactly when, partially because I keep forgetting the calendar months in DnD/BG3. I'm officially going on record as making it 22 Alturiak. In her original story, she was born on February 22nd.

She would celebrate as a kid, but they would be small occasions with just close friends and her brother.

Games / Learning something new

She played the same games as many other deep gnome children. She did spend a lot of time alone, so she learned to entertain herself a lot.

She likes to learn. As a kid, she would get excited when she had a chance to learn something new. As a baby, she was a lot more afraid of things. It wasn't until she got older that she deliberately started fighting her fears.

Trauma

Oh boy, her parents did a number on her. Her dad was more excited to have two women fight over him than take care of his kids. He allowed Anna to treat the kids as pawns.

She was neglected a lot as a kid. Her parents were way more into their own drama than the kids.

She and Sebastian were pitted against each other. They have no ill will toward each other, but they never had a chance to grow close. Maybe one day they'll change that.

Teenager:

First love

Her first crush was her schoolmate, Alston Garnet (he/him). He was a deep gnome fighter. She didn't know that much about him because it was a pretty innocent teen crush.

I like to use songs as reference points and my first immediate thought was I'm In A Perfect Relationship from Central Park. It's the perfect sum up of how she and Alston felt about each other.

They both think it's really funny now that they're adults. They aren't close, but do consider each other friends.

Alston is now in a relationship with a deep gnome ranger, Orryn Filchbatter (he/him).

Rebellion / Running away

Her fondest memory comes from the one time she ran away. She was probably around 13, just barely a teen. She left home and traveled the Underdark alone when she was discovered by a druid. The druid guided her home and kept her safe. It left a huge impression on her and it's why she's a druid.

The druid who took care of her was Umber Rivers, a nonbinary water genasi who identified with the Circle of Land (Coast). As a kid, Ingrid fantasized about Umber raising her instead of her parents.

Reckless behavior

She wasn't really a reckless kid. She would sometimes get pulled into things by friends (Gerbo specifically) or her parents. This is when she started to experiment with drugs to treat her anxiety. She eventually found the right mix. It only counts as reckless behavior because she had no guidance while doing it as a teenager.

Peer pressure

She would sometimes give into peer pressure. It was never when it came to hurting other people though. Every time she gave into peer pressure, it was usually just stupid teen shenanigans or trying a drink or drug she shouldn't.

Taking responsibility

She was good at taking responsibility for her actions as a teen. Sometimes a little too much where she'd be held responsible for stuff that wasn't even her fault.

She was often treated like an adult by her parents. Parentification led to her taking responsibility for stuff her parents did, too. It didn't help her anxiety.

Adulthood:

Their “first time”

Donella Underhill (she/her) was her first real relationship and the person she shared her first time with. Donella was a deep gnome cleric, but she focused on becoming a merchant. Donella still lives in Silverdale and sells potions. If someone ever goes to Silverdale, they could encounter her as a potion seller.

The first time was awkward, but they learned a lot from each other.

Ingrid and Donella no longer talk.

Serious relationships

Depends on the universe/AU! In BG3/DnD, her first serious relationship was with Donella. They were young and it didn't end well. Neither of them knew how to navigate relationships and Ingrid didn't know how to set boundaries of any kind.

They have no ill will toward each other, but also have no interest in reconnecting. When they first broke up, there was a lot of raw feelings that turned into "hatred" for each other. Once it subsided, they took a much more nuanced view of the failed relationship.

Donella is now married to another deep gnome named Caramip Sparklegem.

Work

She's a druid, but she also works and makes money as a tattoo artist.

In her original universe, she's a human and a tattooist. It's not the career people expect of her. She loves tattoos and she loves drawing, so it made sense.

Leaving home

She was still a teen when she officially left home for good. She figured if she could take care of herself, she could hit the bricks. She wasn't kicked out, she just didn't want to be around her parents anymore.

Aging

She's a deep gnome so she could live to 350 to 500 years. And that's assuming some DnD shenanigans don't prolong or shorten her life somehow.

Most deep gnomes are expected to ease into adult life by 40 and she's only 28.

Staring a family/found family

Minty, Laura, and Bex are her found family. If you have to compare them to anything, I would say sisters or cousins. In BG3, she also considers her companions found family.

Eventually, she might like to settle down and have children with someone. This could be biological or adopted children. She does fear she'll have a similar birth experience as her mother though.

OTP: Astarion. In-game doesn't do them justice, they need in-depth essays and fics about them and their issues they need to overcome to be together. Both of them have been hurt by their ex lovers and understand one another's need for gentleness and loyalty. Gale also talks a lot and Bear would adore listening. Other peoples' ocs. Brotp: Karlach. R E L A T I O N S H I P S

OTP: Vatyrie/Astarion. Playing through bg3, I was shocked at how well their stories foil each other. Both have a core desire for freedom and want to be loved/cared for but fear suffering for it. I could go on all day with the two of them

Acceptable Ships: I think he could bond well with Wyll as well, if Wyll was willing (or wylling) to put in the work to build his trust and show him the benefits of selfless heroicness. Other people's OCs are also cool with me, if you think he's a good match!

Brotp: -> Karlach reminds him of his sister and once they get close, they get along like a house on fire (a bit too apt of a metaphor lol). -> He also loves gossiping with Shadowheart, and appreciates her private yet sometimes goofy nature. -> And of course, Astarion is a best friend who he finds fun, relatable, and talented.

Notp: He might not work in a relationship with everyone (very few actually) but he could comfortably have a sexual relationship with just about anyone. At heart, he is a very tactile and affectionate person, and sex is more of a hobby/fun pass-time to him (love making/emotional intimacy is more sacred to him). Only thing I can think would be The Emperor, because there is so much suspicion and distrust and anger at the manipulation and of being someone's tool again.

Hunger was familiar to Astarion. Intimately so. But when every day brought a new challenge, another fight, another hurdle in the way of their quest for a cure, the gnawing pit in his stomach made every aspect of their journey a trial of perseverance. Starvation made him slow and sloppy, and that put him at risk. Soon the others would surely question his usefulness, debate whether keeping a starving vampire around was worth the risk. First, he needed blood. After that, he needed protection, assurance that there would be someone to defend him, to stand up for him when the others doubted. And their wayward ranger of a leader, Vatyrie, was a perfect candidate for both his needs.

Astarion and Vatyrie at the beginning of their relationship is basically

Vatyrie lets Astarion drink his blood and seduces him, so if his identity as a demi-devil ex-noble is revealed, Astarion will want to keep him around and might convince the others to not send him away. Astarion does his thing with seducing Vatyrie for a similar reason: protection and ally-ship. Vatyrie realizes first that he is falling for Astarion around the end of Act 1 (though he honestly starts developing feelings shortly after their first night together).

Then in Act 2 when they realize they have real feelings for the other, it comes with The Guilt of worrying that they've just manipulated the other person. Astarion realizes his feelings much later but he is the first one to bring it up in the Act 2 confession scene. And What a fuckin RELIEF it is for them to realize they not only feel the same but also have both been stumbling around feeling guilty about "manipulating" the other. To know that they won't lose the other or be pushed away for doing what they thought they had to to protect themselves, for a mistake made when they didn't know any better.

Love this trend I've seen people doing for their BG3 characters and had to do it myself! Thanks to @_Mythir on twitter for the template!

Vatyrie is a very openly sexual and promiscuous person. As a noble, sex was a fun pass time that also happened to piss off his family, and there were plenty of people willing to hop into bed with him. Though more often than not, those lovers either wanted something from him like prestigue or favor with the Avaris family, or they were very poor, foolish assassins. He could count the number of genuine lovers he's had on one hand. After his banishment, sex became his way of filling his want for affection and companionship; a night of fun without any actual attachment or emotional intimacy that could get him hurt. He even spent some time as a courtesan--getting sex AND gold at the same time? sounds great to him! He is not ashamed of that time, but he wouldn't go back to it since it had lost it's novelty.

So even though Vatyrie is VERY open to sex and is an incorrigible flirt at the best of times, he is extremely difficult to develop a true romance with. If he does fall, it is like a sunrise: slowly, subtly rising until you suddenly notice everything is brighter.

You know those phrases bg3 characters say when you click on their portraits or direct them somewhere? Well, now Vatyrie has some as well. These are mostly basic ones with a few stealth and combat ones. Perhaps I'll add more whispered phrases, combat lines, and the funny responses to spam-clicking.

Low Approval:

flatly "Oh. It's you. What do you want?"

exasperated "You need my help again? Are you really this incompetent?"

At low approval he is very cold and passive aggressive. With an acquaintanceship, he's more warm and teasing. This is about when he would start lightly flirting as well. Once he considers someone a friend, he is more genuine, eager to help and be included, though still joking and playful at times. To his lover, he is passionate and expressive and very affectionate; he is excited to see them and tries to be attentive. Genuine friends are something he has not had in a long time, and he has likely never had a true, deep love. It is difficult to get to those relationships with him, but once someone does, he is fiercely loyal and caring.

Since I can't draw myself, I realize my characters' appearances with things like HeroForge. Or in Vatyrie's case here, his FALSE appearance. This is what he looks like to most people, and for most of Act 1 of BG3. Lore of this 'disguise' (and my homebrew subrace) and his true appearance below the cut ^.^

The subrace of tieflings, Demi-devils, tend to have noticeably more devilish features, even among tieflings. This is due to their idealization of their infernal heritage creating a culture that values "purity" and preservation of diabolic traits and believes breeding with non-infernal races would 'dilute' and weaken the precious infernal blood. Things like solid colored pupil-less eyes, multi-pronged or larger horns, and hooves or digitigrade feet are indicators of "undiluted" infernal blood. Outside the caste of demi-devil society, these features are uncommon and even feared.

As Vatyrie discovered the hard way, his devilish features made him stand out, even among tieflings. More than once a cleric tried to banish him back to Hell or fiend-hunters chased him down when he was mistaken for a real devil. Even when people recognized him as a demi-devil tiefling and not a true fiend, he was still shunned or feared for his subrace's reputation of cruelty and manipulation.

So, he had his necklace enchanted with an Disguise Self spell. He remains a tiefling appearance since it requires less magic and less personal adjustment to not have to account for hiding an entire tail and set of horns (plus, it is already jarring enough to be constantly hiding his true appearance).

Removing his necklace reveals how he actually looks (some of these features I cannot include through programs like HeroForge, but I have commission art and other references to be added on another post). His eyes are solid gold with no clear difference between sclera, iris, and pupil. He has two sets of horns with a shared base. His teeth are more fang-like, and his mouth actually extends further up his cheeks, allowing his jaw to open further like a naga or yaun-ti (a trait from his ancestry back to Mammon, the snake-like Archdevil of greed). And of course, his tongue is forked. The tip of his tail is like an arrowhead, hard and sharp enough to be used like a dagger and capable of injecting a paralytic venom like a stingray or a scorpion (though his venom is far less potent since the infernal magic of his blood is sealed). His legs are semi-digitagrade with almost reptilian feet--or a raccoon's paws lol. And there are more ridges on his body than the average tieflings of BG3--mainly a few in some...intimate places (they're not as unusual as you think, Wyll).

This explanation honestly came about just because I wanted to justify why my original designs of Vatyrie (made years before i knew of BG3) could not be perfectly recreated in the game.
