Where Am I Now? — 8 Mar 2023

Until recently, I got shadow-banned for direct message spam. I had spam requested many Tumblr users to help spread the word about FIVE by @vamichaelaws. Feel free to skip past the explanation to “Currently, FIVE no longer exists on AO3” portion.

The FIVE Incident explained.

At the time, I got upset after seeing a copy of FIVE posted on AO3 by an anon. Was Michaela Law's work missing? Could I find it? If I could find it, why did they copy Michaela Laws's work to AO3 and think that was ok? Did they think Michaela Laws was unable to gain or wait for an AO3 invitation? Did they ask Michaela Laws if she even wanted her work posted on AO3? I got angry at the anonymous person because how could they disrespect a creator like that? How could they not research that the creator was still active on Tumblr or social media? If they Googled Michaela Laws, they would see her website with links to her social media accounts and demos! They could have reached out to ask her about her Tumblr or for permission to post! How could they decide for the creator where the content (child) goes? Considering these things, I realized the anonymous person did not care for the source.

The anonymous person only wanted to push more content out into a quiet community. They hoped that posting more content would feed and inspire the community to create. The anon could not see, how fans may perceive this work or the value of research. In their original copy repost, the only credit they gave to Michaela Laws was “Michaela laws <3 (I think)”. Overnight, word got to them, and they did change it to read “MICHAELA LAWS”. The Anon did not understand leaving a copied post up without the permission of the creator was wrong. Did they think people would take the effort to search Tumblr or Google this author? They ignored the fact that typing “FIVE written by Michaela Laws” would not show up in a Google or Tumblr search. Also, how could this anon think other people would put in effort when they themselves did not even put in the effort? This anon accepted other's words that Michaela Laws' Tumblr posts went missing. Meaning, others would accept that claim as well. They never acknowledge Michaela Law's former username or her active Tumblr. The anon neglects to inform other readers that FIVE still exists on Tumblr at all! Instead, the anon takes credit away from Michaela Laws as the TUMBLR CREATOR of FIVE. Again, denying that creators have the right to choose where and when their content gets posted.

To clarify, let me make a hypothetical scenario. What if Michaela Laws CHOSE to take down FIVE for some reason? But this anon felt they had the right to bring it back from the dead without her consent. The anons actions FORCE Michaela Laws to address the work's existence. As if the creator's choice over their work does not exist. The anonymous person's actions would be overstepping the creator's boundaries! As I mentioned, trying to search “FIVE by Michaela Laws” would not show the original Tumblr FIVE work. In essence, not linking Michaela Laws's Tumblr denies her credit over FIVE. Anon never taught others to find the original content and would get credit for posting FIVE. Throughout history, anonymous people wrote and spoke things that we still reference today. For these reasons, I claimed that anon had plagiarized FIVE. Why? FIVE is a work actively posted on Tumblr under the user @vamichaelalaws, not Michaela Laws. It is important to update source information's links and usernames, so others can find it. With all this explained, I hope future Seduce Me fans learn from this or ask the community for help.

Currently, FIVE no longer exists on AO3.

Thank you to those who helped show that Michaela Laws' works still exist on Tumblr. In this quiet community, reposting resource content can help connect fans. Sometimes fans are not inspired by the game, but by the original creator! I cannot explain how the bloopers made me appreciate voice actors' work to bring characters to life. I hope fans realize that research and crediting origin sources are essential.

Fans need to respect a creator's boundaries and decisions for their content. There are various reasons why creators remove old content. Regardless of the reason, fans should respect the original creator's choice. Sometimes old content does not reflect new aesthetics or may have offended others. If someone feels the need to share a “missing” piece from a creator, writing the name of a person is not enough. Even if something is on the internet, it does not mean it is free to use. In an era of technology and social media, there is no excuse for not getting in touch with the creator. Fans need to seek the permission of the source before taking action. To reiterate, do not repost anything without the creator's consent! Consent is important and, thanks to technology, easy to overlook.
