Recycle Jeans: Transforming Old Denim into New fabric
In this post, you will learn how to recycle jeans.
Denim, the classic fabric that captures the essence of resilience and adaptability, often finds itself relegated to the back of the closet as trends shift and sizes change. However, the journey doesn’t end there. With a bit of creativity and some basic tools, you can recycle jeans and breathe new life into this robust material, repurposing it…

Dahlia, 18: “My entire look is thrifted/upcycled. I have been heavily inspired by 1920s women’s fashion lately and by Natalie Portman’s character Mathilda in Léon: The Professional.
Heidi, 19: “I'm wearing Mexican cowboy boots, Dior luster denim, If Six Was Nine tank top, and 14th Addiction leather jacket. I am def inspired by 90s and early 2000s Berlin youth fashion, as seen in the film Christiane F, and Hedi Slimane’s photography ‘Berlin’.”
Saw this cool idea for making wrist cuff thingies out of old jeans. I made this one 100% upcycled materials. (Even the thread is upcycled from the jeans I got it from.)
I finally got my hands to repair my favourite summer pants. They’ve been serving me for several (more than 5?) years already, so fabric started to tear-up in a couple of places. I decided to cover them with embroidery as it seemed better than trying to make patches. Soooo here’s some results ✨🧵🪡
Saw that one denim hip pouch you made, the mcmurder one. Cool as shit! Going to see if I could make one kinda like that out of some old really ripped jeans I have just dying in a closet right now.
Excellent, glad to be an inspiration! It was pretty simple to make using sleeves I removed to make vests. It would totally work with old pant legs!
I turned the old jacket sleeve inside out, stitched across 1 end to make a bottom, attached a simple button closure on top, a chunk of leftover denim to make an inside pocket and used old belt loops on the back. Adorned with patches, buttons and metal. Sprinkled bleach on a few for more character. #10 crochet thread, always.
Here's some of the others I did for more examples/inspiration. Used old pant seams on another to make loops and attached carabiners afterwards.
“I’m wearing a Zara denim jacket customized with hair color + safety pins, thrifted Neiman Marcus blazer and leather harness, thrifted diy crop bleach hoodie, thrifted MM6 chain, black vegan leather dress, Zara diy rip + pins jeans, and thrifted Dolce Vita boots. NYC and New Yorkers inspire me. NYC has so many layers, rich in high fashion and streetwear. You can wear whatever you want and it’s not absurd; it’s just NYC.”
