Ice Chemist (Alchemist Archetype)
Tumblr media
(art by MagicalKaleidoscope on DeviantArt)
Do we have any Mr. Freeze fans in the audience. (We can all agree he should be called “Dr. Freeze”, right?)
Jokes aside, it’s often easy to assume that alchemists are “mad bombers” or pyromaniacs since they by default get fire-based weaponry as one of their core class features, but what if you don’t want that?
While fire and explosions are certainly very fancy and flashy, the sciences of chilling things, of cryogenics, are also very worthwhile. After all, We all know how refrigeration and freezing revolutionized food preservation, confectionary arts, and even medical science in the real world, so it only makes sense there would be alchemists exploring the applications of such in a fantasy game!
These so-called “ice chemists” Are most well-known for starting with icy cold bombs, but that is just the beginning! Later on they… well… they, um…
Huh. Aside from certain damaging extracts, there aren’t a lot of options directly related to cold in the ice chemist’s arsenals, and even those you have to choose to take as part of your normal spell selection.
Not that I mind such a simple archetype that only changes a little, but I feel like the ice chemist could have used a little expansion, at least being some optional discoveries that let them use their cryogenic arts in interesting ways. But we’ll get into making the most of your ice chemist later on. For now, let’s look at what they can do!
At it’s core, the ice chemist does exactly as promised, changing the base bomb damage to cold, but otherwise functioning as normal bombs except that they don’t count as being frost bombs with their secondary effect at first, learning to use fire bombs counts as a discovery (including not being able to be used alongside other bomb-altering discoveries), and being unable to use the explosive or inferno bomb discoveries.
They also gain an inherent resistance to cold and can comfortably live in extreme cold as their bodies are altered and adapted to function where others would freeze.
And then they learn the frost-bomb discovery, purely to add the bonus effect to their bombs.
As you can see, aside from the resistance and cold damage, there isn’t a whole lot going on here, but it can serve as a good basis for a thematic character. Extracts like detonate, elemental touch, and dragon breath can make them somewhat good at damage dealing. Meanwhile, in keeping with the themes of cold and preservation, the various discoveries based around healing oneself and becoming more resilient through self-mummification are thematic choices. In the end, you can mostly build them like any other alchemist, but hopefully this plants some thematic seeds.
When I made the comparisons to Mr. Freeze earlier, that wasn’t a shallow take. Yes, these chemists alter their bodies to be comfortable well below freezing temperatures, but much like the aforementioned Dr. Victor Fries, there’s a lot of ways you can play such a character, their hearts could be metaphorically frozen, feeling little beyond dispassionate determination. Or they might have a secret, tragic warm spot, or perhaps unhealthy obsession. Or they may buck all of that to be passionate and kind despite being icy cold beings.
An unnatural chill has come to the forest of Arnu’s Sleep. Some suspect the machinations of a winter fey or a white dragon driven by rivals from the north. However the truth is stranger, a mad doctor experimenting with the creation of artificial winter, regardless of the toll it takes on the surrounding region.
For centuries, the lair of Luciana the Frozen has stood as part dungeon, part museum of the icy alchemists many discoveries over her career, even long after her death. Those who brave it will have to contend with ice-encrusted bone golems and other frosty guardians, to say nothing of the alchemist herself, preserved in lich-like immortality with a literal heart of ice.
Unusual for a leshy, Needlebranch enjoys winter more than any other season, and seeks to unlock the secrets of plant life that thrives in winter, from the mundane pines and cedars, to exotic flowers that poke out of mountain snow, and beyond.

the only time i can vaguely get into love triangles is the idea of a doctor/companion romance thing (requited? pining? they’re just Weird about each other?) happening, and then when those two are at their most intense, that’s when the master shows up and it becomes very clear that. whatever is going on between the doctor & their companion. is not even a third of what is between the master & the doctor.
and then cue the angst because how. how. are you supposed to compete with someone they’ve known forever, who they’ve defined themself by for centuries, who knows every little detail about them and then some.

You mentioned Lappland being "lone wolf", but it's interesting how in the end of Siracusana it said that she's no longer can be called one, and that makes me think about that contradiction in her character where she's the representation of wilderness, but in the same time the thing she despise the most is mafia aka wild part of Siracusa.
Also that part in the end with "Never again will Siracusa have a place for her" makes even wonder if she actually will be in next Siracusa event or if she suddenly will appear in some other plotline.
Oooh. Honestly I didn't remember that but yeah, it's quite interesting and I honestly really like how it plays into her character. Like, she despises Siracusa and everything about it because of how her Father showed her no affection and cruelly raised her to become the next Don of the Saluzzos, which he succeeds in.
I'll have to reread Il Siracusano again as well as her files etc to see how this impacts her character but I think that Lappland seeing Siracusa as a swamp and Texas telling her that she needn't be leashed to Siracusa herself and then Lappland going to her Dad for the last time is due to this.
She is the "perfect Siracusan" because her Dad seared Siracusa into her very being. She couldn't escape Siracusa because she is Siracusa. This makes her integrally tied to her family which doesn't want her, making her a Lone Wolf defined by being apart from her Pack and why she goes to her Dad to cut ties for good she's no longer a "lone wolf."
Which is just a thought I've not ironed out.
One thing though is she seems to be following Texas's steps exactly. Her in IS-ST-4 is the period of time where Texas left Siracusa and was alone in Columbia till Emperor met her, which perhaps Zaaro meeting Lappland is meant to mirror.
Idk. Tis but another thought lol but I am curious, cause translate this into the civilization vs wilderness allegory and yeah. Lappland hates the mafia, the wilderness and is herself the wilderness, an overgrowth in Zaaro's words but is finding herself in the pure, unfiltered wilderness now at the end of IS-ST-4 so who knows what they're doing with that. Unless Lappland's heading towards an acceptance moment like Texas finds in Il Siracusano, if we continue that.
Also on the second part, I am of two minds. Like I think it'd be really interesting to see Lappland doing things in another place like Higashi but on the other hand I kinda don't think that they'll do it.
Like, she could find her own PenLog but I feel there's so much history and tightly knit bonds in PenLog that'd be hard to just recreate in an event and it feels like they wouldn't try to make a new group for Lappland to fit into when she already has an established connection to PenLog and most notably Texas.
Also perhaps more importantly is the themes of Siracusa, Lappland, Texas and Zaaro's presence. Take her from Siracusa and she loses so much themes. Texas despite being exhausted of the mafia and resentful like Lappland returns and accepts Siracusa. And Zaaro, while interesting if he is taken elsewhere I feel that a lot of things significant about him and that he'd have an opinion on would be lost.
Buuuut to go back to "Lappland following in Texas's footsteps" they could do something hilarious: Zaaro following in Emperor's. Him leaving Siracusa and learning more of the world, opening his eyes to new opportunities and putting the swamp that is Siracusa and the Signore dei Lupi's rigid game behind him would be interesting.
And it's not like they wouldn't have a 6* foreign to the setting. Prime example is Ideal City. Will we get Durin operators? We'll get one and instead, the six stars will be from Sargon and Ursus lmao. So it's certainly possible.
I also would love to see a Lappland in Higashi event but only time will tell where she goes.

Geomancer (Occultist Archetype)
Tumblr media
Fun fact. Did you know that it’s possible to power a light bulb by sinking a wire connected to a power source into the ground and another connected to the bulb a surprising distance away?
I suppose the point of that little tidbit is that the earth beneath our feet is capable of channeling very real power, so it’s only natural to think that it might also channel mystical power.
The word “geomancy” has taken on something of an altered meaning in this day and age of fantastical and over the top special effects and video game animation. I’m sure many of you think of geomancy and imagine a mage ripping stones from the ground to bury and bludgeon foes.
And there’s nothing wrong with that, but much like necromancy, geomancy originally was about gaining information and wisdom from the earth. Hell, Feng Sui is technically a form of geomancy, albeit one peppered with legitimately good advice for designing homes that don’t suck, as is the concept of ley lines and the like.
Today’s subject seeks to reconcile the two, being a bit of tapping into the wisdom and magic of the terrain, with a bit of drawing actual magical power from it as well, as well as a touch of manipulating it in dramatic ways.
The occultist class, with its focus on reading psychic and occult impressions in physical objects, is perfect for this, reflecting the more esoteric mysteries of geomancy both western and eastern, in addition to using them with the more dramatic geomancy we see in the modern era. Just look up geomantic tools and charts and tell me that you can’t imagine a fantasy geomancer using them to summon power from the terrain.
The result is an occultist whose magic varies a bit depending on what terrain they are in, and can be quite formidable. I imagine they are most common in regions where esoteric and occult lore is given a lot of credence and respect, perhaps alongside strong druidic traditions.
In addition to storing mental focus in their implements, these mystics can store some in the very terrain itself. As long as they maintain contact with the ground, they can draw upon this investment for various powers.
Additionally, they use some of the focus that they would use to learn magic associated with an implement to instead draw magic from their environment, these spells changing as they change what terrain they are in. Cold regions grant icy spells; deserts grant those of heat, dryness, and sand; forests let them manipulate and commune with plant life; jungle taps into the poisonous and verminous life found there; mountain calls upon deadly stone attacks and utility; plains call upon wind, agile quadrupeds, and the multitudes of unnoticed insects; other planes draw upon useful utility and survival spells for extraplanar realms; swamps offer mud, rot, and insect life; underground gifts earth manipulation, enhanced senses, stifled air, and formless allies; urban grants magical understanding, agility, and stealth; and finally, water grants survivability beneath the surface and direct control over water.
The level of investment these mystics put into the terrain enhances their awareness of it, making it easier to survive and thrive therein.
They can, however, expend some to bolster their speed, the terrain shifting to remove obstacles , give them boosts, and otherwise quicken them.
These geomancers can also expend some energy to bolster themselves and nearby landbound allies, the terrain empowering their strikes and defenses alike.
Their most dramatic abilyt allows them to reshape the terrain into a strong barrier with a hefty expenditure of energy.
At the cost of one implement school, these mystics gain what is essentially a different implement school with ever-changing spells useful for whatever environment they are in as well as survival buffs, mobility, buffs, and battlefield control. Of course, all of these abilities require mental focus to be invested beforehand, so you can pick when to use them each day depending on the situation, investing a lot or a little and reallocating as needed. The spells and powers are guaranteed to almost always be moderately useful as long as you and the party don’t do a lot of flying, so you’ll probably enjoy it a lot. I recommend a build centered on buffing and battlefield control, appropriately.
This archetype doesn’t reference real-world geomancy all that much in the end, but you can totally use such tools and symbology as part of your character’s arsenal and aesthetic. It mostly revolves around finding ways to randomly generate symbols and then interpreting them, though other forms exist as well.
For decades, the journal known as the Wanderman’s Cypher has eluded decryption, but new evidence points to the key being tied to mystical signifiers tied to the locations where they were originally written and encoded. Of course, the text is centuries old, so acquiring the answers will need strong retrocognitive magic tied to the memory of the land rather than the memories of mortals.
It is theorized that the gargoyles of Nakkor created the Nakkori Lines, great shapes carved into the badlands earth that are visible from the air, as a way to navigate while high in the air, and while it is true that they do use them for such now, other sources suggest they are much older.
There are plenty of mystics that claim domain of the sea, but the ocean giant tyrant Ogzal claims not only his domain, but the shore beyond as well, backing it up with mystical arts tied to his esoteric magics. Stripping him of that power will help those seeking to dethrone him stand a chance.

i don’t usually read modern AUs, but after binging PIAJ. i tried The Ceracurist. you have singlehandedly reformed my opinions. the attention to world building, while maintaining parts from the source material. the banter, the gaming, both video and sports, is awesome. you are a master of your craft
Bless you, that's lovely to hear.
Originally, Ceracurist as the basic concept (Callum is a ceracurist and that's how he and Rayla meet) occurred to me and I thought it was fun but on its own that wasn't enough to interest me in writing anything. But then one of my friends who I was talking about it to accidentally tripped my Worldbuilding Engine ™ and then I went a bit nuts and then I just sort of had to write it lol. So the fic mostly exists because I found the worldbuilding too enjoyable to leave it unwritten.
At this point I'd consider Ceracurist to be my second favourite tdp work of mine, after piaj. It has some components that are a ton of fun to play with.

#You know what’s weird?#in a way I am more steady in myself than I have ever been. I see my worth rather than pretend I see my worth but actually don’t#I see where all my shit stems from in a way I never used to. I talk about it in a communicative way I was never able to before#like all of it is lining Up and somehow? I also feel worse?#I don’t know if it’s because I’m just more aware now and also more capable of changing my habits or whatever or if it’s just less repressed#but like. been having seasonal affective disorder since I was eight probably and even before but then you didn’t know#and I didn’t put the pieces together until. what. 2014? 2015? I didn’t know it had a name#and id always count it a good winter if I hadn’t disassociated at all. that was the goal.#now 2022 is over and the months where id disassociate are also over (it always gets easier for me come January)#and I made it through without disassociating! that’s a huge win right! right? but …..#and somehow it felt like? SUCH a rough winter? and I handled it well but everything feels so heavy#and I know it’s not worse than prior years. I do. but it doesn’t FEEL like that#perhaps that’s because of everhthing that happened in December and my falling out with my dad and my owning up to how deep my trauma runs#instead of passing it off as ‘haha yeah some things were rough and winter sucks BUT I AM SO CHIPPER AND GOOD AND UPBEAT HA!’#but honestly looking at it just. is a lot. and logistically I know I genuinely am the best version of myself currently#but 2014 me was funner thinner and wilder and she was also COMPLETELY unhinged and I know I shouldn’t want that version of me back#but I’m constantly comparing current me to her?????? as if she was the ultimate goal#I know when March comes and we’re back at the summer clock I’ll have forgotten how heavy I felt now#but whew…………….. whew it’s a lot#also completely being honest with yourself about jn how many areas your anxiety is Fucking debilitating sometimes#really sucks. it sucks. I feel so raw and vulnerable and I want to stop fixing things and just live#OH THAT TOO my roommate is Living It Up and I used to be able to keep up with her when we were in uni and now I can’t and that just#makes it feel even more like i regressed. I hate it. and again I Know myself now in a way I didn’t then and that’s worth so much#but ugh!!! ugh. and also I HATE that it feels like all I’ve done since November is complain but it’s been. Well. extraordinarily rough#I haven’t even told the internet any of it and even my friends know the minimum but. sigh. SIGH.#just sucks to see where your everything comes from. you know?
