Metal Detectorist Discovers Medieval Wedding Ring
Every metal detectorist dreams of unearthing something valuable. For one man the English countryside yielded an incredible find when he stumbled upon a medieval diamond wedding ring in "almost perfect condition" near Thorncombe, in the South West of the country.
Now the item is expected to fetch between £30,000 and £40,000 (Sold For: £38,000) when it goes on auction later this month.
David Board, 69, found the "stunning" ring on his second attempt at becoming a metal detectorist after a stint in the 1970s in which he scoured local beaches but found nothing of much consequence, a press release from auction house Noonans said earlier this week.
Board called the ring "a once-in-a-lifetime" find.
During a recent interview, he said: "There will probably never be another one like it. Back then, each ring was individual and unique, not mass produced like today. It's stunning."
Board took up metal detecting again in 2019. During the second day of a field search, he had almost given up when he got a signal on his metal detector by a footpath.
Initially, the culprit looked like a sweet wrapper but Board soon realized that it was a gold ring.
When he dug it up all covered in mud, Board said he thought it was just "scrap metal" and popped it into his pocket.
"It was once I got home and washed it off that we realized it was a lot better than we thought," he explained.
The ring is in "almost perfect condition," Nigel Mills, a consultant in coins and antiquities at Noonans, said in the release. The jewelery has a golden hoop of two entwined bands to symbolize marital union and an inverted diamond set into it.
Inside the band is a medieval French inscription that reads, "Ieo vos tien foi tenes le moy," translating as, "I hold your faith, hold mine," according to the auction house.
Due to the location of the find and the quality of the ring, Noonans' experts surmised that it's the wedding ring of Joan Brook, given to her by her husband, Thomas Brook.
Their marriage in 1388 brought great wealth to the Brook family, the release said, as Joan was the widow of Robert Cheddar, a wealthy cloth merchant and twice mayor of Bristol -- a city in western England.
It was at a time when medieval notions of chivalry and courtly love were at their zenith, concepts which the ring reflects, Noonans said.
Now known as The Lady Brook Medieval diamond ring, the item will be auctioned on November 29.
Board goes out three times a week, weather permitting, in hope of uncovering another great relic among the musket balls and King George I coins. "It will be amazing if I did," he responded, adding "you never know what the next signal is going to bring."
The discovery adds to a list of incredible finds by detectorists in the UK.
One amateur uncovered a haul of Bronze Age objects in a Scottish field in 2020, in what experts at the time called a "nationally significant" discovery.
And last year it was reported that a huge hoard of Iron Age gold artifacts had been found by a rookie detectorist in Denmark.

Here’s a bargain if you love church conversions.  This former 1871 Baptist church is due to go up for auction a guide price of £25,000 / $31,000, in the rural village Bucknell, UK. It’s a great conversion opportunity, but there are some stipulations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It has two rooms (a chapel and back room) that make up 1,027 square feet of indoor space.
Tumblr media
We believe there is a Baptistry Bath beneath the floorboards in front of the pulpit, though we were unable to investigate further as the floorboards are screwed down,’ reads the Rightmove listing.
Tumblr media
It doesn’t have water, electricity or sewage drainage.
Tumblr media
The new owner will be required to provide access to the cemetery ‘at all reasonable times, to all persons wishing to tend particular graves,’ and to keep the grounds maintained for visitors.
Tumblr media
They must also permit the opening up of existing graves for family members of those already buried there, provide new graves for the former members of Coxall Baptist Church, and allow funeral services to take place on the grounds.

Anime Figure Collecting: Tips and Sites
Since I see a lot of people often say “where do I get this?” or “How much does this cost!” or “ahhh I want this” in the notes often, I decided to make a post of figure collecting sites and tips on figure collecting! I hope this post will be of assistance!
General Don’ts of Figures:
If the price is too good to be true (and it isn’t an official or trusted site), it is too good to be true! Beware, bootleggers are everywhere these days!
If the seller or the item listing is not telling you the maker/studio of the figure, don’t trust it!
If the title of the figure is some extremely long jumbled sentence of descriptor or media words (as seen below) then don’t trust it. These are just search words so more people will see the figure listing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you’re on sites like Etsy, EBay, or Amazon and the seller says that they “handmade” the figures, it is most likely BS and just bootlegs.
In general stay away from Etsy, EBay, or Amazon to buy figures unless the seller has given undeniable proof (usually pictures of the box it came with or you can simply ask for pictures of the figure) that they are just reselling an official or GK figure.
Stay away from Instagram and Tiktok ads.
General Dos of Figures:
Second hand buying is always encouraged!
Buy from sellers or stores based in Japan! Prices will generally run cheaper and figures are released sooner there!
Support GK (garage kit) studios! GK studios make unofficial figures, they are all mostly indie run and make the figures they sell themselves! GK figures tend to run more expensive, but they are valued part of the figure community.
Keep your boxes! Boxes are important for transferring figures and they’re basically the pedigree papers of anime figures.
Be wise with your money. Figure collecting is just a hobby at the end of the day, please save your money if you need it!
Makeup or paint brushes are ideal for dusting figures!
I would recommend having Whatsapp or PayPal. Lots of figure collecting sites have PayPal as a pay option.
List of Trusted Figure or Merch Sites:
Second Hand Sites:
These are sites where you can buy used or even new figures from resellers! All of these sites ship internationally!
AmiAmi (Japan Based)
AmiAmi is one of the most trusted website for figure collecting and anime merch! They sell pre order and new figures as well as used figures!
Mandarake (Japan Based)
Sells second hand figures, manga, doujin, and more! Has an international website!
Neokyo (Proxy Site)
Neokyo is a proxy site, meaning it basically acts as your second man for things like JPN Mercari, JPN Yahoo Auctions, etc. all you have to do is buy the figure you see and pay for shipping, and it will make sure your item arrives safely!
Buyee (Proxy Site)
Same as Neokyo
ZenMarket (Proxy Site)
Same as Neokyo and Buyee
Mercari (US Based)
Mercari basically operates like EBay! Mercari does not ship internationally, but there may be a Mercari specific to your region (for example, JPN Mercari).
Non Second Hand Sites:
All these sites do not sell second hand figures so they will be more expensive! Some sell only official figures, while others sell only GK figures! All ship internationally!
DekaiAnime (UK/EU Based)
GamerSheek (UK/EU Based)
GKCollectors (Singapore Based)
(Sells NSFW figures, so minors tread carefully)
FigureChoice
(Sells NSFW Figures)
FavorGK
(Sells NSFW Figures)
Fanoey (Hong Kong Based)
Solaris Japan
(Sells NSFW Figures)
Big Bad Toystore (US Based)
WeAreAnimeCollectors
(Sells NSFW Figures)
How does the pre order process work?
When figures are in pre order, that means you will pay for the base price of the figure (or a deposit as some sites have) and then when the figure is finally released and ready to ship, then you will pay for shipping! Shipping is calculated by size and weight of the box, so be prepared to spend as low as 20 USD or up to even 100 USD for shipping.
I hope this post was of some help to you! Have fun figure collecting and please do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions or are confused about any info!

why is the headstock to thoms Yairi Dy88 different than every other Yairi Dy88 I see pictures of?
For those who don't know, the K.Yairi DY-88 is an electro-acoustic guitar that Thom used on tour during the OK Computer era. He had two of them, but donated one to a homeless-support charity auction in 2004. The lack of sound-hole on the guitar means it won't feedback at high volumes, which makes it useful as a touring instrument. He seems to have first purchased one in around 1996, after the band's touring gear was stolen in October of 1995. Thom was perhaps most notably seen with the K.Yairi during Paranoid Android and No Surprises on Later... with Jools Holland in 1997. He also played one heavily during the 1997 Glastonbury festival, including for Karma Police.
However, it's worth noting that Thom likely used other acoustics in studio for OK Computer — particularly for Climbing Up The Walls, since that song features Thom singing into the soundhole of an acoustic (Nigel recently confirmed that Thom did so on the recording, not just at live shows).
Tumblr media
A photo of Thom and Colin performing in the late-1990s.
Headstock Inlays: K.Yairi vs Alvarez
In the late-90s photo seen above, the headstock shape looks pretty standard, comparing it to others on Reverb. The main difference is the headstock inlays. DY-88 instrument sold under the Alvarez brand simply have that company's logo inlaid on the headstock (as seen in those Reverb listings). Instruments sold under the Yairi brand have "K.YAIRI" inlaid at the top, and Yairi's triangle logo inlaid underneath. In addition, Yairi switched to a larger version of their inlay at some point in the 1990s. In the photo above, Thom's guitar has the latter inlays.
For most models, it's just a marketing difference. Alvarez is a USA-based brand/distributor, so guitars made for US market have that logo. According to some, instruments sold in the USA were marked as "Alvarez", while those sold in the UK and other regions were branded "K.YAIRI". If you dig around, you can also find instruments made for the Japanese market with the K.YAIRI inlays, including this eBay listing for a model called the YD-88S. But you can also found Alvarez-branded guitars sold in Japan, such as this YD-88 CTM with super simple fretboard inlays.
You can also find versions of the 88 with a rounder headstock shape sold by both brands. The official YD-88BK webpage shows an instrument with the K.YAIRI markings and the rounded shape. The "BK" in the model number stands for "black", and you can find maple ("M") and sunburst ("SB") versions as well.
Tumblr media
Thom with one of his Yairi guitars during Radiohead's session for the BBC in May, 1997 (photo by Tom Sheehan, edit by qwerrie). Note the "pointy" fingerboard inlays.
Fingerboard Inlays: Round vs Pointy
The fretboard inlays inlays add even more confusion. Thom's guitar has "pointy" triangular inlays along one edge of the fingerboard, with triangles at both edges at the twelfth fret. But at least two other inlay patterns were used on these guitars, seemingly at the same time. The other patterns are noticeable in some of the listings that we linked to above. Here's a used listing in the USA for a black DY-88 with the same "pointy" fingerboard inlays as Thom's guitar, but with Alverez branding. Here's a used listing in Japan for a YD-88 with the same fingerboard inlays but with the K.YAIRI headstock inlays (it also features an aftermarket Roland MIDI modification — that guitar must've had an interesting life!). So the fingerboard inlays aren't specific to any region.
Model Number: YD-88 vs DY-88
You may have noticed that some of these are listed as "YD" rather than "DY". Here's a used listing in Japan for a black, 1993 YD-88 that looks identical to Thom's instrument, with both the K.YAIRI branding and the "pointy" inlays. This is one of few listings that shows an actual photo of the official model number, and it's listed as YD-88BKN. Presumably these same instruments were exported to the UK as well. But it's believable that Thom could've bought the guitar in the UK or when touring in Japan. So it seems likely that Thom's guitar is in fact a K.YAIRI YD-88, rather than a DY-88.
However, I can't find any consistent difference in the specs between the YD and DY version. So it may also have been regional marketing, just like the brand inlays on the headstock.
Needless to say, this company created quite a few aesthetic variations over the course of the 90s, but ultimately they all seem to be the same instrument.
Tumblr media
This clipping from a 1993 Japanese catalogue highlights the YD-88BKN on the far left.

If you were forced to choose between the two modified Tour sets of "The Brilliant Original," which one would you choose? The 2019 World Tour set OR the 2020 UK & Ireland Tour set?
Oh... Hard one.
PROBABLY the new World Tour set, as it tries harder to maintain Maria Bjørnson's original design? Even if they used the half-chandelier from an elder US Tour, and only raised it halfway up to be able to list it from the stage instead of from the ceiling, it was still the original look from most angles, AND it started down on stage as originally intended:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Equally, the proscenium did not have the Golden Angel, but at least it kept some side sculptures and the straight lines of the main proscenium:
Tumblr media
The UK Tour revival of 2020 seemed like a stranger animal, with its Restaged Tour chandelier operated from a separate platform, and starting in mid-air in the auction scene, albeit draped up.
And YES, I know this was a plan B due to technical difficulties, and that they were to use the chandelier they are now using in the West End Revival. Still, this too was meant to be operated from a separate platform and to hang in mid-air during the auction scene. AND... this is what they did send on tour, in 2020, after all, and for me the Restaged Tour's regency chandelier does not belong in Maria Bjørnson's set. It looks cool enough, but like a non-replica production?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm also not loving the cracked-up, rounded proscenium or the navy (?) Palais Garnier curtain. Again, strong non-replica vibes. Which I'm a fan of when it's an actual non-replica, but this was tooted as Maria Bjørnson's original design - which it is clearly not:
Tumblr media
Another aspect is the Rooftop set. Whereas the Golden Angel was cut from the proscenium in the new World Tour, they introduced the structure as a sculpture on the rooftop. A bit random in All I Ask of You, not quite belonging in the design:
Tumblr media
...but a great effect during the curse and curtain call, echoing a bit of how the scene looked when the angel was still in use in the proscenium set:
Tumblr media
Whereas the Pegasus horse is less intrusive during All I Ask of You, and looks like a pretty repeat of the flat backdrop's horse sculpture, I like it was less in the curse and it certainly offers a "Plan B" feeling for the curtain call. But... it looks pretty in photos.
Tumblr media
If you're gonna present something as Maria Bjørnson's design, then I like the versions that either sticks to that, or at least try to stay as close as possible to it. Hence, I have a more intuitive liking for the World Tour revival than the UK Tour revival. But I think they were both decent attempts to send out an easier-tourable version.
I'd also like to give props to the Mausoleum set in the World Tour revival. One solid block of floor-based stage set replaced the bridge and grave. This was to make it easier to install in all theatres, while still maintaining the same look. I rather like the result:

Prosecutors have called for two British brothers to be banned from Switzerland for five years as punishment for their role in raiding a museum of iconic Chinese Ming Dynasty artefacts.
At a court in Geneva on Monday, Stewart and Louis Ahearne confessed to being part of a gang which burgled the Museum of Far Eastern Art in June 2019.
On top of the ban, prosecutor Marco Rossier said the court should jail the brothers for four years.
They will be sentenced on Tuesday.
Mr Rossier told the court the brothers, who are from south-east London - and a third man named in court by lawyers as Daniel Kelly - were all "equally involved" in the burglary.
He said Louis Ahearne carried out reconnaissance of the museum, while his older brother Stewart hired a Renault Captur car out in his name - which he then drove to and from the scene of the crime.
"Louis Ahearne booked the hotel room, the ski masks and clothing used in the burglary," Mr Rossier said.
"Everything was prepared and organised. Everything was very quick."
Two bowls and a vase from the 14th Century were taken in the raid, Mr Rossier explained, adding one bowl was taken to a Hong Kong auction house by the three men. Stewart Ahearne left his passport details as they sold the item, the prosecutor added.
A second item, a vase, was recovered in central London as part of an undercover sting operation with Metropolitan Police officers posing as art buyers a year after the heist.
The third plundered artefact, a wine cup, has never been recovered.
Around 3.5m Swiss francs (£3.2m) worth of damage was caused to the Museum of Far Eastern Art which is based in a listed townhouse in Geneva's old town.
On Monday, Louis Ahearne said he carried out the burglary in order to "clear a debt" and Stewart Ahearne said he took "full responsibility" explaining he wanted to "protect" his younger brother.
Mr Rossier said the prosecution doubted the brothers' version of events as the third person was not in the court and is currently the subject of extradition proceedings to Japan.
The court also heard from Loris Bertoliatti, representing the Museum of Far Eastern Art, who said damage caused by a power saw, sledgehammer and crowbar cost the institution millions.
"They are a professional gang," he said. "They were determined to sell the items. The victim is the museum. Lots of people were shocked by what happened."
Stewart Ahearne's partner Nicola Barry was called as a witness on Monday and described the father-of-five as a "kind, loving and nice person" - adding his employer has committed to giving him a job when he is freed.
The brothers' mother, Suzanne Ahearne, said Louis Ahearne is a "compassionate and empathetic" person who had an "unhappy childhood".
She told the court since his extradition from the UK, he has been writing to his nine-year-old son from prison in Switzerland trying to "give the guidance he never got" from his father.
The Ahearnes' defence barristers will also provide mitigation before the president of the court Patrick Monney delivers his judgement.
The hearing continues.

Rare Ancient Silver Coin Looted in Israel Returned
A rare silver coin — valued at $1 million — that was looted from an archeological site in Israel has been returned to the country, Manhattan prosecutors said this week.
The quarter shekel was minted by Jewish rebels fighting the Roman empire during “The Great Jewish Revolt” in 69 C.E. and dug up in the Ella Valley years later.
The Israel Antiquities Authority learned in 2002 through multiple informants that the ancient coin — known as the “Year Four Quarter Shekel” — had been looted.
The coin is one of only two dating back to the revolt, which began in 66 C.E., that are known to exist. It was moved through the illicit antiquities markets until it was smuggled from Israel through Jordan to the UK, where it was offered at a London auction in 2017.
Homeland Security officials seized the coin later that year after collectors tried to sell it at an auction in Denver, where it was listed as having an estimated value between $500,000 and $1 million.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Antiquities Trafficking Unit took the investigation over and eventually sent the shekel home to Israel.
“We are honored to return the Quarter Shekel, an exceedingly rare coin that has immense cultural value,” DA Alvin Bragg said in a statement Monday.
“Despite the complexity of this investigation, our team of prosecutors, analysts and agents working with Israeli authorities, were able to track down this antiquity in just a matter of months.”
The shekel was returned at a repatriation ceremony on Monday attended by Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan.
“This singular artifact is a stark reminder of the Jewish people’s millennia-old connection to the land of Israel,” Erdan said in a statement, thanking authorities “for restoring this priceless coin to its rightful home.”

Rembrandt Harmensz. Van Rijn (Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam), Portrait of Jan Willemsz. van der Pluym (circa 1565-1644) and Portrait of Jaapgen Carels (1565-1640).
Exceptionally rare, the portraits of Jan Willemsz. van der Pluym (circa 1565-1644) and Jaapgen Carels (1565-1640), signed and dated 1635, are intimate portrayals of relatives of the artist and provide a unique insight into Rembrandt’s activity as a painter within his inner circle. With a virtually unbroken line of provenance, these pictures were acquired at Christie’s by an ancestor of the present owners almost two centuries ago and have remained completely unknown to scholars ever since. They return to Christie’s now after an extensive scholarly investigation and scientific analysis undertaken at the Rijksmuseum.
Small in scale and painted from life with Rembrandt’s characteristic virtuosity, these pictures offer a tender portrayal of a dignified, elderly couple who were related to the artist.
The sitters, wealthy Leiden plumber Jan Willemsz. van der Pluym (circa 1565-1644) and his wife Jaapgen Carels (1565-1640), were intimately connected with Rembrandt. The Van der Pluyms were a prominent family in Leiden, with their son Dominicus van der Pluym marrying Cornelia van Suytbroeck, the daughter of Rembrandt’s uncle on his mother’s side, Willem van Suytbroeck. Dominicus and Cornelia had one child, the artist Karel van der Pluym, who is thought to have trained with Rembrandt and included the artist’s only surviving heir, Titus, in his will. Karel’s uncle Willem Jansz van der Pluym also sat for Rembrandt's most finished portrait drawing. In 1635, the year these portraits were painted, Jan Willemsz. van der Pluym and Jaapgen Carels acquired a garden next to that of Rembrandt’s mother in Leiden.
PROVENANCE
The portraits have a remarkable, virtually unbroken line of provenance. They remained in the family of the sitters until 1760, when they were sold at auction in Amsterdam after the death of their great-great grandson Marten ten Hove (1683-1759). From there they passed to the collection of Count Vincent Potocki (circa 1740-1825) in Warsaw, before briefly entering the collection of Baron d’Ivry in Paris in 1820 and then James Murray, 1st Baron Glenlyon (1782-1837), who put them up for sale at Christie’s on 18 June in 1824, lot 76, listed as: ‘Rembrandt – very spirited and finely coloured’, where they were acquired. For the last two centuries they have remained in the same private UK collection.
