During the Covid-19 outbreak in the first half of the year, I set up bamboo fences around the outer walls, and planted some vine plants and vegetables, like cucumbers and luffas. When fleeting spring gives way to summer, these cuties start to send green glow. Pick the fresh cucumbers from the vine, and some termite mushrooms from the mountains. Cucumber peels with Lap-mei, cold noodles with chicken shreds, fried rice with cucumbers, Chinese chicken burrito… #It tastes like Li Ziqi’s summer#. How about yours?

Gourds and Magical uses
Frankie's gourd thoughts.
Not the end all be all but the musings of one growing gourds.
Overall there are many plants in the gourd family. Squash, zucchini, pumpkins, watermelons, cucumbers, hard gourds, loofas...
Almost all gourds would be useful in:
Fertility workings (think of all those seeds per fruit, and each plant produces multiple fruit)
Growth (seriously you can see their progress as you grow them each day)
Strength (the seeds are so hard and take strength for the sprouts to bust open those shells and get going)
Patience (it takes patience to wait for your gourds to be ready to harvest, in some cases immense patience in preparing your harvest)
Bindings (yup vining plants are amazing binders because of the way their tendrils wrap around, cling to, climb, and sometimes suffocate other things)
But after you get past the main characteristics of this diverse family we start to get into nuanced magical uses for each type of gourd.
Jack-o'-lantern pumpkins for instance, would make a horrible attractant pumpkin in a recipe because they are grown to be hollow and large for carving, not sweet like pie pumpkins.
🎃I would use Jack-o-Lantern pumpkins for protection, banishing, hope (light in the darkness)
🌱I would use Pie pumpkins for attracting/bringing things to me, for family relations, comfort, love
🌱Tennessee Spinner/Dancer gourds are tiny gourds grown for their ability to make a children's spinner. They are also about salt/pepper shaker size. I would use these fun ones for innocence, trance states, movement, dance, starting things, vessels.
🌱Cannonball gourds... Can we talk about that cool name? They are about the size of a cannon ball. They are used primarily for bowls and are very hardshelled. I would use these suckers for protection, for vessels, for preservation, transformation.
🌱Bottle gourds are another hard gourd. They are usually used for holding liquids or birdhouses. Probably could be used in works for finding homes, for protection, for sustanence workings, potion holders.
🍉 Watermelons are notoriously hydrating and sweet. I would use them to refresh something, to restart or renew something. To bring things in in a pleasant manner. They are also high in vitamin c (ya know that vitamin for preventing scurvy) and because of that I would also use this for health blessings.
💆Cucumbers the spa gourd. Seriously yes they are edible but they are the most visual part of spa day art. They are hyrdating, and healthy, crisp and clean. I would use them for refreshing, renewing, boosting up, cleaning out, self care work, relaxation, health blessings.
🍪Zucchinis are very similar to pie pumpkins for me, while they are not inherently sweet they are used in baked goods often. I would treat them as a hearth and home gourd. One that can be used to bring balance, peace within the home, perspective.
🛁Loofas yeah you heard that right those scrubby things you use in the shower or bath are grown! They are grown in gardens and are so prolific you really only need to grow them once every ten years, one fruit has too many seeds for me to willingly count. With it's common use as a scrub sponge it's a shoe in for cleansing and banishings properties, I would dare say it could be a potent ingredient for death work as you only get your scrubby after the plant has dried and you remove the "skeleton" and shuck away all the life giving seeds.
If all you could manage growing were vining gourds... You'd still have an amazing amount of options as a magical practitioner and what you could use them for in your path because I didn't even cover all of them!
There are basket gourds, tobacco box gourds, rattle gourds, snake gourds, summer squash (technically zucchini is one of these but I think of them differently), types of mellons, spoon gourds, siphon gourds...
Sooo many diverse possibilities in one family of plants.

An Authentic Taste of Italy at Margot, Covent Garden
Not many restaurants are named after the co-owner’s mother in law but Margot, Covent Garden isn’t your average place. Located on Great Queen Street away from the crowds, it’s in a handsome stone building. The brainchild of Paulo de Tarso and Nicolas Jaouën, it specializes in authentic, seasonal Italian cuisine.
As soon as we walked in, we noticed the friendly vibe and stylish decor. Designed by Fabled Studio, it’s a pleasing combination of circular shapes and subtle blue-green tones.
You know the nursery rhyme, “10 Green Bottles hanging on the wall”? Well here, there are a whole host of bottles adorning the staircase that leads down to the private dining room and bar.
We were invited to sample Margot’s recently launched Italian brunch and regular readers will know that I’m a big fan of brunch. With unusual dishes like Italian lemon crepes with wild berries and mascarpone and fried eggs with burrata and finocchiona Toscana salami, it’s a welcome change from the usual brunch offerings. You might notice the daschund breadstick holder, a tribute to the original Margot who was much shorter than her husband and affectionately nicknamed dachshund by him! We kicked off our brunch with a couple of signature non-alcoholic cocktails recommended by our friendly waiter. Mine was Felicitá, a lovely combination of mixed berries, cranberry juice, pomegranate and lemon. Paul really enjoyed his Mr. Greene  cocktail with cucumber juice, apple, agave syrup and lime.
Our waiter brought us a great selection of fresh bread from which to choose including foccacia and wholemeal bread. There’s definitely a sense of theatre appropriate to Theatreland at Margot, Covent Garden from the unveiling of the bread to the mixing of the drinks by the cheerful barmen.
For his brunch dish, Paul went for the poached eggs on tomato and avocado bruschetta with crispy pancetta, or as they say in Italy, uova in camicia. All the eggs at Margot are free-range, and you can definitely taste the difference. The softness of the egg and avocado contrasted well with the crispy pancetta and sourdough toast.
To go with our brunch dishes, a signature cocktail was a must! The Padua Piccante Aperol is an intriguing mix of red chili pepper, passion fruit, peach liqueur, lime and apple juice. Now, chili might sound a bit overpowering but it works surprisingly well here.
We also enjoyed a healthy side dish of sautéed mixed mushrooms.
They went perfectly with my quiche with Swiss chard, fontina cheese, mixed herbs and pumpkin cream. The pastry was crisp and the flavour of the cheese really shone through.
To finish in style, Paul chose the torta del giorno aka cake of the day. This was carrot cake and beautifully adorned with piped cream and fresh mint.
My personal favourite though was the chocolate bomb, which isn’t currently on the menu but if you go and ask nicely, you never know! Brunch at Margot, Covent Garden is available on weekends between 12 noon and 4 pm and a great option if you’re looking for high quality food with fantastic service in the heart of town. Which would be your favourite dish?
Margot, 45 Great Queen Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2B 5AA
