"I will run out of county cash aid eligibility halfway during my program. At that point, I will be solely responsible for childcare costs for 3 kids under 10. Student researchers/fellows currently do not get childcare reimbursements. The current proposal would only cover my costs for 3 months, leaving me financially responsible for 6 months of after-school care and 3 months of full-time care in the summer. I may have to choose to not continue with my program and lose the time and resources that I have invested and that others have invested, including the university.
As a single mom to 4, I qualify for Cash Aid and Food Stamps under the CalWorks program. In my first semester this fall, I pursued the advanced payment available for CalWorks students of $500 towards books/supplies. I went through the correct channels and only met resistance, because no one knew what I was talking about when I sought out an official UC signature for my CalWorks form to qualify for the payment. The registrar didn't feel comfortable signing off on my list of required books, even with syllabus documentation. The financial aid counselor didn't feel comfortable signing off because no one had experience with CalWorks and the university does not have a CalWorks liaison. If I hadn't been a college admin for 10 years elsewhere, I would have given up the first three times.
Very few in my position have the time to escalate through multiple levels. Even fewer have the institutional knowledge to affirm that they have a right to this assistance (in the form of a signature) from the university. I accepted my financial aid package and admissions offer in the spring prior to my first semester. My FAFSA expected family contribution (EFC) was no longer accurate because my status had changed from fully employed spouse to unemployed single mom. I filed a special circumstances appeal in June, so that my EFC could be adjusted from $10,000 down to $0. This wasn't just important to my campus aid package; my EFC was being used to determine the size of an outside scholarship award. I would either get the lowest $500 award or the maximum $5,000 award. I followed up with the financial aid office every week. The first month, I received the response that my appeal was in queue. The second month, I was referred back to the FAFSA to update my income information. I had to dig through the FAFSA website for evidence that the appropriate body to review my change in income is the school itself, not the federal government. The third month, I was notified that the financial aid office does not review appeals for graduate students.
Since we have 5 yr funding packages, there had supposedly never been an appeal filed before. My guess is that anyone who did file an appeal accepted their rejection at face value and gave up. Thanks to my institutional knowledge, I asserted my rights to an appeal and review because of my changed circumstances. By October, I was calling the financial aid director daily since I was on the cusp of losing the chance to be awarded the $5,000 outside scholarship. I got lucky one day and the person I spoke with took me seriously and pushed the review. My EFC was updated that same day.

"I am on strike to fight for fair compensation and the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) as a fifth year physics PhD student and teaching assistant at UC Merced. Even though I am living in one of the cheapest areas of California, the housing crisis that all of us as academic workers face is still ever present here. Apartments that were once $700 per month are now upwards of $1,200 per month for one bedroom. To make matters worse, the amount of affordable housing has dwindled in the past five years because there has been little development in the city for such housing units. Because of this, many workers end up finding rooms in large houses that are still a ways away from campus where we work, with rental rates exacerbated by greedy landlords and the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Workers are beginning to pay $1000 per month for a master bedroom in a house when they might as well invest that money into an apartment. The icing on the cake is that our campus is in the middle of farm fields and at least 2 miles from the closest neighborhoods. Many workers and students rely on the CatTracks (UC contracted) shuttle system to get to campus and around town, but even the shuttle system has been deemed unreliable by many with consistently late shuttles and missed stops. These two joint issues leave so many workers and students frustrated and affect all of our parent workers, disabled workers, and international workers. Therefore, I stand in solidarity with marginalized workers and their families and remain active in the strike by helping with departmental and campus-wide organizing and continuing to fight for all of our workers across the UC system. The initial wages demand of $54k+COLA to address rent burden is what united us to walk off our jobs and stand on the picket line back in November. In doing so, we have fostered and created a tight-knit community of students that are strong, united, and passionate in this fight. We are not willing to give up.
I believe this fight goes beyond UC and beyond California - it is a call to address the systemic problems in higher education in our nation. Therefore, I am striking for base wages to completely eliminate our rent burden. I am striking for protections for parent workers, disabled workers, and international workers, and I stand in solidarity with all workers. The latest proposals from UC that a majority of the bargaining teams voted on are inadequate and insufficient in addressing rent burden which is the central issue we face. A fair contract must meet the needs of all workers, including the most vulnerable.

Build Back Better Colleges
In the wake of last week's anti-affirmative action decision, Larry Summers wrote an editorial urging that elite colleges respond by becoming less exclusive. Grow. Admit more students. Add more programs. Invest in education.
I could not agree more. And it's something we need to do on all fronts. Yes, the Ivy Leagues should get bigger. But the great public universities in our country should also be expanded on. The University of California system is one of the great engines of economic mobility and advancement in large part because it is huge. But there has not been a new UC campus created in almost twenty years, and UC-Merced is by far the smallest undergraduate campus in the entire system. You have to go back another forty years for the most recently established UC campuses which are of a size comparable to the system average (both UC-Santa Cruz and UC-Irvine were established in 1965). Why not create a new UC in Sacramento, or in the Bakersfield or Modesto? Or hell, put one up in Redding?
Higher education is in a weird moment where there is simultaneously an approaching demographic cliff that will obliterate demand at the bottom end of the scale even as student demand for the top schools surges to unprecedented heights. I don't have answer to the former problem. But the only way to respond to the latter is to increase capacity in "elite" institutions, and that in turn will take a massive investment in education to absorb the tidal wave of demand.
It's not enough for colleges to exist -- we probably have enough dorm room beds already in the United States. They have to be great colleges -- colleges that are well-supported and well-endowed and well-resourced so that the students who attend can afford to go and know that they're getting an excellent education from top-level professors. Certainly, the far longer-standing crisis in graduate education means we don't lack for supply in the last category. But we also know there's a huge difference between setting up a new fly-by-night program that exists just to exist, versus actually investing in new educational opportunities. UC-Irvine Law School immediately stormed to a top-50 ranking from nothing when it was founded in 2006 because, unlike most other newly-established law schools, it boasted a level of public and private investment that showed it was serious about being a serious institution.
The problem we're experiencing is not actually one of bad minority students taking away the rightful spoils of White and/or Asian students. The problem is one of meritocracy and equalization paired with scarcity: an explosion in students applying for (and being qualified for) "elite" positions with no increase in the number of elite positions available.
Equality means that more and more people have at least nominal potential access to elite institutions, which means that it's harder for any one individual person to access these institutions, which results in a terrifying and never-ending arms race to become (and stay as) one of the elect few, which generates new inequalities in terms of who has access to the resources that allow them to win the arms race and who doesn't.
In a very basic way, it is true that "equality" is the problem here. In the old days, if you were an elite, you could be pretty confident your kids would stay elite so long as they were basically competent: with relatively few people who could or were allowed to compete for prestigious social positions, being "okay" generally was good enough.
Once the doors are flung open, though, you're competing against everyone, and now it's off to the races. Today, we don't want to say that "only the children of elite university attendees should attend elite universities"; we want to say that every child should have an equal chance to join the Talented Tenth. But saying that means that, if you're in the top 10% right now, you're committing to the notion that your kid should only have a 10% chance of staying in your social strata, and that's a very unpleasant thought that only grows worse as the gap between the top 10% and everyone else increases. But unless your solution is "we should go back to reserving elite roles for the current incumbents", this is necessary feature of an egalitarian social sphere combined with extremely limited "elite" social roles. So if we're not going to accept going back to overt exclusion, we need to tackle the omnipresence and power of scarce "elite" roles. The only actual way to ease the sting of redistributing the pie is growing the pie. The actual, actual villain here is terrifying inequality -- the massive and growing gap between the power, influence, autonomy, and life chances of the elites versus everyone else, which makes so that not getting into Harvard feels like a death knell.
The only way to ease the sting of redistributing the pie is growing the pie. If you're panicking at the seemingly impossible task of seeing yourself or your child admitted to an elite institution, ending affirmative action will not help you. Nor, if we're being honest, will ending legacy admissions. The only thing that will make a difference is a true commitment to investing in education to such a degree that there is space for each of our outstanding youth to receive an outstanding university experience. There's no shortcut, no scapegoat that can substitute for that.
We are blessed as a nation right now to have surfeit of incredibly talented, hard-working, diligent young people who are eminently qualified to attend a great university and deserve to have that chance. The only thing standing in the way is our own willingness to pay for it.

Endnote 5: A Case Study in Digital Radicalism (UC Merced Talk)
Referring back to Gamergate. And an unfortunately good rehash, for anyone who was not really into "ethics in games journalism" 10 years ago or less. It's hard to fully understand some of the more recent developments among "angry white men who enjoy harassing people" without getting into what tactics the relatively new alt-right were trying at this point.
I am feeling a little old again now, but hey. This shit is unfortunately important.
Most people who want to harass...need someone to tell them that it's normal.

First stop, Cydonia. Love the Broken Arrow, but we are here to find a UC ship captained by a guy names Moara. Apparently, he's found an Artifact.
Bartender needed some convincing, but he finally told us that Moara was headed to Venus, so Venus we go.
And there are Varuun Zealots there, but no Moara. Sarah spotted a relay satellite and we glided in on minimal power to scoop the news from it. Sure enough, Moara left a message that he was headed for the old Nova Galactic Staryard above Luna to salvage parts for his ship.
This set off all sorts of alarm bells because I'd heard that station was a Spacer hangout. But I've been there. When you need ship parts, you need them now. In space you sometimes you have to risk everything to get what you need to survive. Well sure enough, Spacers and Ecliptics were battling it out and Sarah and I ended up in the middle.
Got some nice salvage from the dead mercs and found a note from Moara. He'd found the staryard too dangerous to stay to fix his ship of course, and had moved on to Neptune.
We finally track down his ship orbiting Neptune and it turned and fired on us! Turns out Ecliptic mercs had boarded and Moara was holed up in the bridge. We took out his engines, boarded, killed the mercs, and patched Moara and his ship up enough to get to Cydonia.
In return, he gave us the Artifact he'd salvaged. Would you believe he was using it as a hood ornament? 🙄
Back to the Lodge and our (well, Noel's) hypothesis was correct. The Artifact "fit" with the others. It is like they recognized it.
I apparently passed the test because Sarah gave me a Constellation suit, helmet, and boost pack. Nice enough for now. I paid Amoli another visit and sold a bunch of stuff we'd salvaged, including my old mining suit. Kept the cutter though. You can pick up a lot of credits while surveying planets by gathering minerals.
Barrett's gone missing, so we're out to Vectera to figure out what is going on. Noel said she'd heard they were closing up operations there, but no mention of Barrett.
I hope I'm not going to turn into Constellation's taxi driver. I'd like to get out and do some exploring! Some planetary surveys! Oh, and I almost forgot - I'm thinking of joining the UC Vanguard. Once you're past their orientation it is pretty much an on-call type of gig.
The plus is that I can access their flight simulators. I'm only rated for Class A ships right now, so I can use the Vanguard to get certified up to Class C! If I had to do it myself it would be expensive, in time, credits, and ships.
But that will have to wait until we find Barrett and tie up some loose ends. Because of that, I spent nearly all of my credits upgrading the Frontier. Only a step up for the Grav Drive, Engines, and Reactor, but I can really feel the difference.
Anything to help survive ship battles.

aristre 🥹🥹pls tell me which UCs gojo, geto, shoko, nanami, megumi, nobara, and yuuji would get accepted into and attend + bonus points if you classify them as college stereotypes
yes baby anything. ANYTHING. for you. guys you can request too don't let aaesuki carry my blog by herself please
jjk characters & universities of california
satoru gojo
ucla
accepted by all the ucs except uc merced btw ty aaesuki for the idea. bro is so mad he drives down to uc merced in his fanciest prettiest clothes to strut around and geto is in the passenger seat like lol (are you serious).
but no ofc he's ucla. dude's on frat row getting wasted and banging every single hot person on gayley. he shows up to lecture once in a while not to listen but to look pretty while everyone stares and whispers abt him. ruins every single stem curve. god i hate him
i think his favorite dining hall would be epicuria because he has fine taste :)
suguru geto
ucla
dude i think he'd go to uc irvine but aaesuki was like no he and gojo go together so whatever. he actually shows up to lecture 40% of the time and has good notes. he sells them for $20 and makes a tidy profit unlike gojo who buys an ipad and proceeds to play temple run on it instead of writing notes.
he goes to peet's coffee after lecture and orders a caramel latte or sthing fruity except when he looks for his meal ticket he realizes he forgot to redeem one. everyone in line gives him theirs
ieri shoko
uc san diego
she is a woman in stem and she hates socializing (i think) so nowhere is better than uc socially distant. if she's not in her single dorm she's in that big ass building on campus where it gets progressively more quiet as you go up and she's in the most quiet floor. i don't go to ucsd
i think she would be in a lab freshman year, doing clinical research sophomore year, and publishing papers junior year. goes to grad school at stanford or something ..
kento nanami
uc berkeley
im so sorry im so sorry i have to put u here nanami. i was gonna say he goes to croads for fun but i can't even say that cuz he would never do that. bro is the guy who tells people in the libraries to be quiet since some people need to study. bro also shows up to every single lecture in the front row and asks insightful questions the profs love him
he rooms w haibara his second year after they get kicked out of the dorms cuz ucb hates providing housing :3
megumi fushiguro
uc berkeley
im so sorry goomi that u would go to uc berkeley. i mean what. go bears! brain like berkeley! anyways dude's on that 4.0 gpa 25 creds a semester 4 extracurriculars shows up to office hours kinda guy. he DOES go to croads but only bc it's close by and he doesn't want to spend money on doordash but he rlly should. he should get doordash
accidentally gets drunk at a party he was dragged too and drunk texts the yuuji + nobara gc but because he's so hammered it comes out like "mile read my" and when they're like what he sends the blurriest selfie except he's not even in it it's his hair and half a finger.
nobara kugisaki
uc santa barbara
yassss prison dorms prison school. never attends lectures, but gets decent grades anyways. often out partying and shopping but also a fan of studying in the library after putting on makeup and picking out a fit good enough to gag the students from abroad. gets dole whip from that one dining hall. yea
hates the lagoon cuz it stinks bad but still goes there anyways when she needs some time to relax
yuuji itadori
uc davis
go!! aggies!!!! let's be real he accepted cuz he heard there were cows and there are cows. he loves the cows. dude i think he would be a target and costco fan he likes to go in there and walk around and stare at everything. except he has to drive to sac to get to target since they don't have one at davis LMFAOOOO ..... go aggies!
got food poisoning from the dc chicken but he still went back for seconds. got food poisoning again. friends had to hold him back but he went for thirds anyways. bonus points to anyone who guesses what happened after
