Today, I had a dream where I've turned on so many U-matic, Betacam and DVCPRO VTRs to have fun with them, whether it's digitizing or recording.
So, when I was having fun with these VTRs, Stephen Spielberg suddenly appeared at the door of the room. He talked to me that all filmmakers, actors, and any profession related to filmmaking, most follow philosophes and advices of film production. The art and entertainment industry is highly competitive, with multiple creative works and related companies vying for attention, though this may be relatively easy for new and smaller companies to compete with established players.
When Spielberg left the room, Lizzy, Doll, Rebecca, Thad and Cyn from Murder Drones suddenly appeared next to the media desk while I was digitizing U-matic, Betacam and DVCPRO video tapes. They were seeing everything on the room, ranging from vintage stuff to modern stuff.
VTRs are devices that were aimed at professional market that wouldn't be relevant to the average consumer. Also, the video tape format families U-matic and Betacam, and the DVCPRO format are made for professionals rather than average consumer.

Because there were a lot of people getting horny over a VHS VCR loading a tape, have an old video of my U-matic deck loading a tape.
(U-matic was a Sony format launched in 1971, predating Beta & VHS. It never caught on in the consumer market but it got a lot of use in the professional arena for many years)
Tumblr media
It uses U-loading, which has the tape dragged almost completely around the head drum. This is easier on the tape but requires a much more complicated loading mechanism, as you can see.
This player is a Sony VO-2610 VCR from 1974.

Lux creates elegant weapons that not only look good but work smoothly. It's no wonder they pride themselves as the best of the best— second only to Toni Kensa.
Their most popular weapon has to be the Lux Tri-Stringer due to its intricate design, but most of their other weapons are just as popular. Their Lux 92. and 52. Gal come in many different colours and accessories, taking Splatville by storm.
(I wonder, if they ever release a REEF-LUX, would it be called the REEF-LUX²?)

I've mentioned the so-called "U-Matic tapes" before, but had tabled finding footage of them bc the next step was going to involve a lot more hacking than I'm capable of. But on my most recent research quest, I got a bootleg DVD which contained an unlisted feature: my personal white whale.
So what is this? Why did I want a copy so bad?
The U-Matic tapes were found in Filmation archives, and we believe this was part of the collaborative process between Mattel and Filmation's development of the characters.
It's easy to look at the Filmation designs and see where the studio's common practices are put into effect. Hordak was changed from gray-skinned to blue so that he would pop out against the backgrounds better. She-Ra's spiraling chest emblem was made symmetrical, because they'd learned that asymmetry and stock footage do not get along during their Superman cartoon.
But this--these designs, this singular tape--this is our missing link. The common ancestor between the first wave toys and the Filmation designs. And yes, I had still images, but not in the original resolution! Not with the clapperboard! This is an entirely unexpected windfall and I'm downright gleeful. Buckle in, folks, I'm breaking it all down:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Castaspella
Ah, Castaspella. She started out with really vibrant colors actually, Justine Dantzer designed her with this whole psychedelic vibe. Her magic wheel was originally super bright, primary colors that imo would have served the toy really well. Instead of 'look at this cool hypno disk' it would be 'look at this cool rainbow hypno disk'. Kids love rainbows! I'm not biased at all!
Obviously the biggest difference aside from her color scheme is the wheel. They did have it in early Filmation passes, but like... it's a giant wheel. I imagine it's kind of a pain to animate.
Double Trouble
Double Trouble, too, had a bit of a color scheme journey. She began with magenta and red, then apparently moved into this violet-and-blue combo, before finally settling on green. And like, the first wave did need more green imo. If they'd stuck with the red for Catra and that lilac for Glimmer they could have had a whole rainbow. And like, gay bias aside, that would be lovely for collectors, or kids that like to arrange stuff by color.
Anyway they kind of stole prototype DT's color scheme for Filmation Glimmer, probably because of the aforementioned 'pop' blue brings against their standard backgrounds. And speaking of...
Glimmer
The guide who lights the way! Filmation pushed her hair much pinker than the toy's (although it's dyed purple in one episode), but otherwise yeah, that's pretty much just Double Trouble's proto-outfit, sans tulle. I should note that the leotards and so on are likely also a 'reduce the number of frames we have to draw' measure. Lou Scheimer had a very, very strict policy that She-Ra's underwear never be showed, which made a number of shots incredibly difficult to animate (the spin-kick towards the camera comes to mind). Honestly it's probably the reason for our She-Ra's shorts. But it's where things like leotards come in handy, because you can animate the action without working around modesty or fabric physics.
Catra
Catra's the biggest downgrade, in my opinion. Like I know, toys marketing being what it is, that they had to push pink. But the red looked so cool! And I know it's difficult to see in the video, but her mask used to have fur like in the prelims. That I think was more of a practical decision, since it's harder to slip a fur-lined mask over rooted hair than a smooth plastic one, but I'd kill to see some test shots with it.
We're not sure what that flocked red Battle Cat mold is--if it's an early Clawdeen/late Tinx, or a shapeshifted Catra. I'm inclined to think the former, both because the play pattern is 'this one toy can be two forms' and because they appear to have added a silver collar in place of Battle Cat's helmet. It seems to have been scrapped for her winged horse Storm, at least for this wave, which is kind of a shame. I think a red velvet Panthor would have had a lot of crossover appeal with the MOTU market (and just been awesome in general).
Tumblr media
She-Ra
She-Ra is pretty far along conceptually on both sides of the equation. Naturally, she was the first to be designed--you can see where Mattel was leaning into a tulle and reflective sticker thing and Filmation was like "we reeeeeally want to give her a winged opera-viking-helm thing though". You can see the mask, instead of hard plastic, is like, shiny foil.
Bow
The top of Bow's cape, too--shiny foil. His bow was shaped more like a traditional longbow, and his quiver appears to have been hollow instead of a single cast piece. His outfit is actually the least changed, both in the toy's production and in developing it for Filmation. Like the only things different in the cartoon are that he doesn't have a breastplate covering his heart & abs, and that they gave him a mustache. They tried to do a full beard initially so like. Hey. Could have been hairier!
The figure on the left, under proto-Enchanta, seems to be proto-Kowl. How quickly Justine Dantzer's concept was lost. Koala, plus owl--it's not that complicated!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but Mattel wanted to make a little guy with butterfly wings instead. Explains some of the Filmation concept art, at least.
Angella
Angella was probably changed the most for Filmation. Like they kept the pink and the wing-influenced sigil on her chest (and the actual wings), but they added that blue--almost certainly for contrast--and turned her blonde. Meanwhile the toy just refined the chest design and switched from opaque white to a semi-transparent pink for the wings. 'Cause you know, toy marketing.
Frosta
Frosta, too, was relatively unchanged. Both companies opted for a lighter shade of blueon the hair, and Filmation replaced the reflective elements with white & the sheer with a different shade of blue, but other than that it was pretty much just the same process they applied with Catra's fabrics. Mattel went for texture, Filmation went for an easy-to-animate silhouette.
Other
I've talked about Justine Dantzer's original vision for the Crystal Castle even more than the U-Matics themselves at this point. She loves eagles, she was really excited about the beak elevator thing, it didn't test well & Mattel decided it was too edgy. Thus, the eventual pink situation.
Speaking of eventual pink sitatuations--did somebody say Swift Wind?
Tumblr media
That blurry, indistinct horse shape is everyone's favorite equine, in the flesh. Guys, look! He's white! There's a blue ombre on his wings! Suddenly the dichotomy of Toy! and Filmation!Swifties seems less extreme, no?
That bird-thing on the left seems to be a proto-Enchanta, albeit very different from the final product (which was basically just a swan with a mane, not this sick ass dragon-influenced version).
The shields were just round shields, but they may have been placeholders to show off colors/materials, because we know Noreen Porter had refined She-Ra's at least by this point.
The video quality is too poor to say for certain who had a weapon and who had a comb at this point, but Catra's little item there looks significantly pointier than the comb she wound up with. Maybe a comb-ination with a knife? I for one think she should get a blade or two. As a treat. They didn't even give her a sword until wave 3, and that wasn't even her main weapon [side-eyes the Shower Squirter judgmentally]
Man I still can't believe this just turned up. Who would have thought that trying to get cleaner footage of the 1985 Duck Soup commercial could lead to this. Thank you bootleggers you are doing god's work (media preservation). If anybody wants some Rainbow Brite or the live action Japanese Spider-Man or something, I had a pretty great experience with these guys. Only complaint is that their list of included features should be way more specific. I took a gamble on finding some footage anyway & while it didn't turn up I'm far happier with this result. Also if an officially licensed version of any of their titles comes out they take it off the store, which is like, weirdly honorable? But good for them, tbh. Good for them.

You're too early
They started decorating the set for Good Day Sacramento on Tuesday. It wasn’t even Thanksgiving yet. They subjected me to that Mariah Carey abomination. I hissed a lot and retreated to the tech core where I have the U-Matic VTRs. Deck the halls with Ampex 197, you heathens. I just now noticed this was 3M tape, no wonder I wasn’t having to fight with it as much. I got new sets of drive belts for…

Princess of Power Secrets Revealed
Another interview of the late Jon Seisa by he-man.org user Tallstar, still available to read on the forums! Tallstar also did a series about Jon’s creation of the Star Sisters, which you can read in full in my newly minted Tallstar Interviews tag. Everyone say thank you, Tallstar.
The below is an annotated version of the post, because I can’t help myself, including a reproduction of a since-deleted bio of Kitty Black-Perkins by the South Carolina African American History Calendar. Why cite a calendar? Hell if I know, but I’ll be damned if I don’t preserve it. Here we go:
For those of you who have been following my series of historical articles on Mattel's '87 Star Sisters, the trio of unproduced figures for Princess of Power (along with their pet, Glory Bird), you will recall that Jon Seisa was brought on to Mattel Toys in October of 1985 to conceptualize this extension line, a line which ultimately never got off the ground due to fact that toy shelves were bogged down with older product that wasn't selling fast enough, and thus resulted in low orders from retailers. Since tracking down Jon in early March of this year, he has become an invaluable resource for information on the vintage Princess of Power toy line. He has acted as a middle-man of sorts between myself and former employees who pre-dated his arrival at Mattel Toys. Back in late March, Jon was awesome enough to offer to reconnect with his former boss, Chris McAdam, the Design Manager for the whole of Princess of Power, for additional details.  At the time, she was just getting back from Hong Kong and extremely busy with her VP job, but took some time out of her schedule to pass along some interesting tidbits of information and history on the evolution of the brand to Jon, for myself and other fans.  However, by the time Jon heard back from Chris McAdam, he had gotten tied up with design jobs and couldn't relay the information to me until more recently. Before passing on Jon's message, I would like to preface (as I did in previous articles) that some of the information contained therein could potentially change and/or be clarified as I (hopefully) start to hear back from some of the employees mentioned in it. PRINCESS OF POWER SECRETS REVEALED - PART 1     "Chris McAdam relayed to me that the original Princess of Power She-Ra was first developed not in her group in Girls' Toys (before I got there in 1985) but in the NBC Group (New Business Concepts), a special separate blue sky design team headed by Susannah Rosenthal, at the time, and located in an isolated location.[[Footnote 1]]  It was the doll designer Justine Dantzer who created She-Ra.  Justine is one of the 3 Dantzer sisters who are all known doll/toy designers in the industry.  I knew Justine, briefly through a mutual friend, but more so her sister Elonne; I didn’t know Marlene Dantzer, personally, though saw all of them at parties and industry functions. Originally, Justine proposed the idea of a female superhero named She-Ra as an antithesis to He-Man for the Masters of the Universe product line; because her observation was that the line lacked a female character, [[note: It didn’t, and as Justine Dantzer has mentioned Teela on multiple occasions I think some adjectives like “super-powered” were simply lost in this game of telephone]] and thus this would add an interesting twist.  The aesthetical look and play accessories, and even a castle were created and constructed for She-Ra for Justine’s initial prototype prelim creation and presentation.  It had a more masculine and rugged quality to it (than the later Princess of Power line) due to its original placement in boys toys. As strategies formed and coalesced, the idea emerged to place it in Girls Toys to empower girls. [[note: this is very sweet of him to say/believe but according to Janice Varney-Hamlin, she’d been attempting to launch a fashion/action flanker brand for some time, including by tying it to MotU, and she only succeeded when the Boys’ department’s concept had “no articulation, no hair, no fashion, not attractive at all” and it was summarily handed over to feed the Barbie brand.]] Chris McAdam was part of that evolution after it was handed over to the Girl’s Toy Design Group.  The objective was to “feminize” and “soften” the aesthetics for girl play. Chris was able to get the talents of Kitty Black (Perkins) on the project (click HERE [[←that link is broken: see footnote 2]] for biography), who at the time was a new emergent designer in fashion dolls at Mattel (who later became one of the top celebrity designers on Barbie).  Kitty created the clever flashy and sassy action fashions with some sort of transformation feature.  Noreen Porter was used to create the wonderful illustrations of the dolls for their sculpts with more feminine proportions and prettier faces, and also their superhero accessories." Of Noreen Porter, Jon had this to say: "We were fortunate to have in the POP design group a fabulous and highly talented in-house veteran doll designer/illustrator named Noreen Porter who worked on the main POP line... and specifically on the Bubble Carriage, Spinerella, Catra and She-Ra.  Her illustrations where highly technical anatomically correct depictions and were incredible masterpieces (done in pencil with perfect highlights and shadows),  The sculptors could literally use her illustrations to sculpt directly from.  I understand that eventually Noreen went into medical illustration, a perfect field for her, IMHO, due to her meticulous attention to illustrative details." My thoughts: Although I could be wrong, from what I gather, the Crystal Castle playset that was constructed for use in Justine's presentation may have been the same as the version shown in the U-Matic videocassette discovered in the Filmation Archives. (I believe it was Emiliano that posted the ARTICLE some years back.) [[note: that link will redirect you to the forums while the org is down. here’s the article in question on the wayback machine. however, since that’s from over a decade ago, the U-Matic videos themselves were uploaded in the now-murdered Flash. so those don’t work anymore. I found some screenshots (see below for the prototype Tallstar is talking about) but no footage, yet.]]
Tumblr media
This seems to coincide with an old book from 1990 about the toy industry called "TOYLAND The High-Stakes Game of the Toy Industry", where it is stated that the original Crystal Castle included a special bird's-beak entrance that would swoop down and pick the figures up to bring them inside of the castle.  Apparently both little girls and their mothers were uninterested in the mechanical feature when Mattel tested it.  They preferred a "softer, less action-oriented product", so Mattel replaced the action feature with a traditional castle door.  This change reduced the cost of the playset. [[note: Justine Dantzer designed that feature. She’s big into eagles.]] The She-Ra in Justine's presentation [[her Power-Con 2016 panel]] is a bit trickier.  It's obviously not the same as the prototype shown in the U-Matic video, as it doesn't have a "masculine and rugged quality." So, it's possibly a version that predates even the wax sculpt that was discovered on eBay a few years ago, because the aforementioned book also mentions that She-Ra's action figure wasn't well received by little girls until Mattel "pinked it up."
-------------------------------
FOOTNOTES (blockquotes which were too long to justify shoving in the middle of the interview)
[1] From -The Plenitude: Design and Engineering in the era of Ubiquitous Computing, by Rich Gold:
NBC was a small group quite literally at the edge of Mattel. We were housed in an old warehouse several blocks from the main Mattel building. Toy design is money and you can’t allow new ideas escape. They had constructed a tilt-up inside of the tilt-up providing two levels of security.
[...] As Louis Sullivan, famous Chicagoan architect, famously stated, “Form follows function.” [...] Susannah Rosenthal, had a different formulation. She said, “Form follows Fun.”

[2] Kitty Black-Perkins: Chief Designer of Fashions and Doll Concepts for Mattel's Barbie line
Kitty Black-Perkins is an accomplished Chief Designer of Fashions and Doll Concepts for Mattel's highly successful Barbie line. Over the years, Black-Perkins's hard work and fashion genius have contributed to Barbie's 300 million plus fashions. Barbie is marking her forty-third anniversary in 2002. For 26 of those years, Black-Perkins has wowed the world adorning its most popular doll.
A native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Black-Perkins is one of seven children. She was encouraged to dream big by two loving parents and her two art teachers at Carver High School. Her dream of becoming a commercial artist took flight when her aunt in California invited her to visit for the summer after high school graduation. Black-Perkins embraced Los Angeles. She earned her degree in fashion design from Los Angeles Trade Technical College in 1971, and after that, she was on her way. Her career experience as a fashion designer began with several fashion houses in Los Angeles among them Miss Melinda of California, Debbie Ross, A & O Couture, and many others.
In 1976, Black-Perkins was enticed by a classified ad for a fashion designer for the largest toy company in the world - Mattel. Through Mattel, Black-Perkins was given the opportunity to travel all over the world. One of her many lines is the African-American fashion dolls: Shanni and Friends, introduced in 1991; Fashion Savvy, introduced in 1997, and the Brandy line currently on the market. A special doll, designed by Black-Perkins, was donated to the South Carolina State Museum in May of 2001.
Black-Perkins's creative impact as a top designer has been recognized and pursued by some of the industry's top magazines and newspapers. Ebony, Essence, LA Magazine, Woman's Day, and Sister to Sister are just a sample of those who have followed her career in print. In addition, her reputation of 26 years and design savvy have earned her many honors throughout the industry. Some of these include the distinction of receiving the Chairman's Award, the highest recognition a Mattel employee can receive. She was honored with this in 1985 and 1987. The toy industry also honored her with their highest achievement award, The Doty Award. She was chosen Woman of the Year honoree at the annual "Woman Keeping the Dream Alive" banquet sponsored by the National Council of Negro Women in 1994. More recently, she was inducted into the Black Hall of Fame on July 23, 2001.
Black-Perkins has always made it a priority to invest time and energy back to the community. She has volunteered to be a guest speaker at several Career Day events and has contributed spectacular one-of-a-kind creations to various charitable fund raisers, raising well over $100,000. Black-Perkins says the best part of her job is the satisfaction of seeing her designs completed and knowing that her dolls are making a lot of little girls happy all over the world.
Black-Perkins resides in southern California with her two children. They are her most prized accomplishment and have been a great source of strength and support for her in following her dreams.
