if you ever feel bad about your writing, remember that you did not publish this line:
“Aro started to laugh. ‘Ha, Ha, Ha,’ he chuckled.”
—Stephanie Meyer, New Moon
also a friendly reminder that this book became a bestseller. if this can do it, so can you.

Fanfiction is not a type of literature good fucking lord 😭😭😭😐😭😭
why do you think "fiction" is in the word. its a work based on existing content, sure. just bc its published differently doesn't make it any less a type of literature. literature just refers to a body of writing. children's literature refers to works and stories written for kids. academic literature isn't a story, but its still literature intended for research purposes. oral literature often isnt ever written down, but its a story passed on verbally and still considered a type of literature.
fanfiction....guess what! those are written words! the value placed on them changes from person to person, and the length and quality changes from fic to fic. but its still literature. just because you don't like it, or you think it's somehow less important than novels (some fics rival novels in length lmao) still doesn't change the fact that fanfiction is still a classification of literature.
is it good literature? not always. is it for everyone? also no. however fanfiction has an important role to play in fandom. thats the key word here - the people who will engage with it most and derive the most pleasure from fanfiction are those who are involved and invested in fandom, and if you aren't one of those people then you just....won't!
and if you're here to argue that novels are inherently better than fic because of tropes, prose, social commentary, or something else? well its your lucky day because guess what! most fanfic authors have taken an English class! lots of them are avid readers! fanfiction doesn't just exist for media like anime or kids cartoons that people like to consider lesser (which is another topic altogether). fanfiction exists for everything, and for as many pieces of media that people create fic for there's just as many different types of people behind their creation. ranging from high school dropout to ivy league education. so clearly, if not all, a good chunk of them know what they're doing
and lastly. fic sometimes get turned into published novels! look at 50 Shades of Gray, that was Twilight fanfiction. The Mortal Instruments was Harry Potter fanfiction! it doesn't take much effort to find more.
so, anon. just because you probably don't like fic.....doesn't mean it isn't literature. and all this from someone who only reads fic occasionally, and doesn't write it. i'm sure people who are more involved can tell you more.
