alright so as a warning to my fellow swifties, this post is going to be about the ongoing genocide of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the Occupied West Bank. If these topics are difficult for you, please don't feel obligated to read what i have to say.

to see the articles that i have today from Al Jazeera, which include the wrongful death of journalist, Samer Abudaqa, the Israeli army killing three Israeli captives in Gaza, to their article regarding Palestinian children is absolutely heartwrenching and infuritates me.

to see so many nations and their governments, the US included, blatantly ignore the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Occupied West Bank is ridiculous. to have my own senators who i have called, emailed, and wrote to say that Israel has a right to commit these atrocities, to kill over 18,000 innocent Palestinians, to displace an entire country of 2.3 million people causes nothing short of distraught for me.

the simple fact that there are so many people ignoring the fact that this is happening is absurd, but to see people call for the active mass killing of innocent people who want to live and live without the oppression of Israel, is devastating. it has become and has always been glaringly obvious that the Israeli government and the IDF are not just trying to "eradicate Hamas", they are trying to eradicate the Palestinian people and culture, all to further themselves. Palestinian people have been dehumanized and turned into pawns in a chess game that they cannot win, and could potentially end in the eradication of an entire population unless we stop Israel and their war crimes.

as someone who was raised in the jewish faith, who had family survive the holocaust (including one who survived Auschwitz), I condem Israel, President Biden, and any world leaders/governments who are supporting their active ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Palestinian people. I condem Zionism and their beliefs, as it has led to almost a century of suffering for those in Palestine and the Middle East.

So if you've ever wondered, "who has saved the most human lives in the history of ever?"

There are a few people who vie for the spot

But the one you don't expect

is Herbert Fucking Hoover

You know.... One of those old timey U.S. presidents who doesn't seem like he did a fuck of a lot? For whom things like Hoovervilles™ are named?

But Herbert Fucking Hoover

Organized the biggest relief mission in history to that point (maybe ever?)

Saved at least 10 million people

And probably accidentally propped up the Bolsheviks and whoopsies, allowed the USSR to become one of the worst slave states in human history

All before he ever became President

So early Soviet Russia was a giant fucking shit show.

In 1917 you have the people topple the tsarist government, pull Russia out of World War I under some pretty fucking atrocious terms, and basically immediately descend into civil war

(which is a "civil war" in name only, because literally dozens of countries sent troops to fight on one side or another, and is in and of itself an entirely confusing and fucked up time frame I don't understand completely)

And while those two wars are finally over by the end of 1920, the Soviet economy is in shambles

Basically all the grain being grown by peasants was being conscripted by the larger government, in part to feed troops, in part to feed "important people" in the government, in part because that's not your grain, it's the people's grain, and by the people the government generally means "whoever we need favors from at the moment"

There are entire train graveyards because of all the trains that have been blown up or sabotaged across 6+ years of war

Rural people are basically wearing rags, living in shacks, and are Poor As Dirt, except they can't get to the dirt for most of the year because of all the fucking snow

The people producing the food are the people who are already underfed

And then in 1920... The fucking wheat harvest fails

Drought and blight basically fuck an entire seasons harvest all across Russia

And you IMMEDIATELY have a humanitarian crisis on your hands

Hard winter + living in rags + already underfed + crop failure = LOTS of people dying

As in, 10,000 to 100,000 people dying each and every week from starvation

If you look at photos, especially of orphanages, it will make you want to fucking cry, because these kids are walking skeletons

By March 1921 you have tens of thousands of cases of cannibalism, mostly unreported

At least 10 butchers shops have to be closed for selling human meat

Kids are literally afraid to go out alone because bands of roving cannibals are especially prizing the meat of children

And all the while, Herbert Hoover has been sitting on the sidelines practically BEGGING Lenin to let foreign relief in, as long as he can make sure the food is actually being distributed equally among the communities

And in March 1921 Lenin finally cracks and gives the go ahead

Now Hoover was the founder and head of the American Relief Administration, which was a US government relief agency

Keep in mind, 1920 is kind of at the height of the first Red Scare

The pinnacle of pre-McCarthy / pre-Cold-War anticommunist thought

There are leftist strikes all over the place. Coal strikes, steel strikes, even the Boston police go on strike around this time

Conservative/wealthy/powerful Americans are shit scared of the left, especially of socialists

And a good number of people just want to let the communists starve

And even though Hoover is staunchly anticommunist himself, he says fuck that noise, people are dying , and talks Congress into giving a whopping $20M in aid ($307 billion fucking dollars in 2023 money), plus $8M from the US military, along with tons of private donations. Altogether Hoover raises over $78M ($1.2 trillion in 2023) and immediately Gets The Fuck to Work.

And he sends in an absolutely staggering amount of support.

200 American ARA leaders hire 125-150,000 Russians on the ground

Commandeers (basically) over 200 ships

Sends over 912,000 tons of food

Sends over 7,500 tons of medical equipment and supplies

At one point has to convince Russia to unfuck its own railroad system and pay their workers so the grain can actually get anywhere

But it works

They set up twenty thousand kitchens

They start feeding 6 million kids and 4 million adults a day

The supplies help 16,000 hospitals and treat a million patients a day

Ten million fucking people don't starve who absolutely would have without aid

Now. We have to acknowledge that this isn't Hoover alone. Obviously it takes a fucking village to save a nation.

But he was the one who fought for it. He spearheaded it, and organized it.

He was also the one that insisted that along with edible food (mostly corn), the aid package include the wheat seeds to plant for next year's harvest, so this wouldn't be a Permanent Problem.

And lo and fucking behold, by autumn 1922, Russia starts to stabilize its food supply

And the famine begins to end

The wild part of this is that if Hoover, an ardent anticommunist, hadn't spearheaded this, the Bolshevik government probably would have fallen

But he cared more about feeding people than he did toppling a government he hated.

If you combine the 10M people he fed in Russia

The 3.1M children he fed in postwar Finland, Latvia, Poland, Estonia, etc

When he oversaw the federal response to the stock market crash of 29 and the start of the Great Depression (as President)

He basically thought that poverty relief would keep people from seeking work?

And thought that monetary and housing relief efforts were the responsibilities of the states, not the federal government?

And so basically his response to "help the banking and economic system is collapsing" was to make sure there were plenty of farm plans available and to try to stabilize businesses, not people? And ignored the fact that the people in charge of those loans were conservative dickheads?

So like. Not Perfect. None of them are.

But 13,000,000 people probably care less about that than about the fact that they lived.

okay so. tw for massacres and artificial famine. answer will be under the cut

okay so. first of all there's a Wikipedia page about list of massacres in India. you can go to the colonial India section and look.

in particular, i want to draw your attention to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. I'll copy paste the introduction from Wikipedia here.

"The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, also known as the Amritsar massacre, took place on 13 April 1919. A large, peaceful crowd had gathered at the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab, British India, to protest the Rowlatt Act and arrest of pro-independence activists Saifuddin Kitchlew and Satyapal. In response to the public gathering, the temporary brigadier general R. E. H. Dyer, surrounded the protesters with his Gurkha, Baloch, Rajput and Sikh troops from 2-9th Gurkhas, the 54th Sikhs and the 59th Scinde Rifles of the British Indian Army.[4] The Jallianwala Bagh could only be exited on one side, as its other three sides were enclosed by buildings. After blocking the exit with his troops, he ordered them to shoot at the crowd, continuing to fire even as the protestors tried to flee. The troops kept on firing until their ammunition was exhausted.[5] Estimates of those killed vary from 379 to 1,500 or more people[1] and over 1,200 other people were injured of whom 192 were seriously injured.[6][7]"

this was like the turning point for Indian Independence movement. the sheer cruelty of the British soldiers at a peaceful gathering shocked the colonial world at that time. the perpetrator, General Dyer, was dismissed from service after this. no other punishment. none. in fact, wait!

this is what he got for massacring over a thousand unarmed people. yeah.

And this is just one incident. one incident of colonial British cruelty upon Indians because we were inferior to them.

oh, I haven't talked of the Bengal famine right?

quoting this article here:

"Policy lapses such as prioritising distribution of vital supplies to the military, civil services and others as well as stopping rice imports and not declaring Bengal famine hit were among the factors that led to the magnitude of the tragedy, historians have maintained."

again, towards the end,

"According to experts, following the Japanese occupation of Burma in 1942, rice imports stopped, and Bengal's market supplies and transport systems were disrupted. The British government also prioritised distribution of vital supplies to the military, civil servants and other "priority classes".

The policy failures began with the provincial government's denial that a famine existed. Humanitarian aid was ineffective through the worst months of the food crisis, and the government never formally declared a state of famine.

It first attempted to influence the price of rice, but these measures created a black market and encouraged sellers to withhold stocks."

so they literally caused a famine in Bengal. my home area. which caused the death of about 1-4 million people. i kid you not

And this does not even scratch the surface of what went on in colonial India

This is. not even 1% of what the British did to colonial India

they never teach you these things because they don't want you people to know the atrocities they'd committed in the past. they just want to paint the picture of a proud nation. no hate to you btw im just a bit mad that they do not teach y'all whatever wrong things they did to other countries. sigh

Hello everyone, I wanted to talk about the Israel-Hamas conflict and the effect on it in social media.

Before I continue, I just wanted to say that I dont support what Israel is doing to Palestine. But that doesnt mean that I support Hamas. I dont support Hamas because they are also fucked up.

TW: Swearing with no censorship because im not trying to sugarcoat this situation.

So first I wanted to talk about how the people use the conflict for fucking clout. This isn't an okay thing to do as actual people and families are being separated from each other. Some people think they can use this stuff to get views and likes. Think of the people who is actually suffering out there.

The worst part is that if they are monetized, they can make hundreds of dollars just from a couple of views. Most of the time, they use it on themselves and not give it to fucking charity that actually helps the people in Palestine.

13 YEAR OLD GIRL RAPED IN PRISON BY IOF SOLDIERS.

A friend if mine lives in Jenin on the West Bank. During one of the raids of the IOF on Jenin, his 13 year old daughter Layan threw a rock at one of the IOF's armored vehicles. They arrested her and placed her under "administrative detention", a k.a. without charging her with anything.

They starved her for 5 days and gang-raped her both vaginally and anally, so brutally that she was ruptured from front and back. They released her this evening by dropping her off at a checkpoint near Jenin. Her father drove her to a hospital immediately where she us now undergoing emergency surgery to fix the ruptures in her lower body.

And people have the audacity to say Hamas is evil? Layan is not the only young girl who got this "treatment" from the IOF. They told her that if she would speak to the media about what happened to her in prison, they would do the same thing to her 9 year old sister.

La mataron de hambre durante 5 días y la violaron en grupo tanto vaginal como analmente, tan brutalmente que la rompieron por delante y por detrás. La liberaron esta noche dejándola en un puesto de control cerca de Yenín. Su padre la llevó inmediatamente a un hospital, donde ahora está siendo sometida a una cirugía de emergencia para reparar las rupturas en la parte inferior de su cuerpo.

“Find the one that was made for you” that’s what stood on the billboard in the airport, as you grabbed your suitcase from the belt and made your way to the exit. Advertisements from this company were everywhere nowadays. “Bullshit,” you muttered as you flagged down a taxi, with yet another ad plastered on the side. This company really thought they could seduce you with the promise of true love as if it was that easy. You didn’t believe it for one second. It was probably a scheme to get your DNA, to clone you and steal your identity. You gave the cabbie your address and opened the front camera of your phone. The 12 hour flight from Santiago to DC hadn’t done you any good, bags under your eyes and your skin just really… dry from the air in the plane.

You were absolutely exhausted and couldn’t wait to collapse on your couch under a blanket and catch up on the shows you missed during your 10 week work mission. You loved your job. You were basically the connexion between the local NGOs and the international aid organizations during a crisis situation in a foreign country. You had experience working all over the world, and because of your expertise in languages and humanitarian aid, you were in high demand.

When you returned from a mission, you usually got a few days off, to recuperate from the weeks you spent working, almost 24/7. But the quiet wouldn’t last very long, because even though your job was helping people, paperwork and securing donations were always involved in this bureaucrazy world (as you would call it).

As the cab dropped you off at your apartment, you took the elevator up and searched for your keys in your carry-on bag. Finally opening the door and dismantling the alarm (leaving you apartment empty for months on end without security would be crazy), you closed the door behind you and dropped everything you had in your hands on the floor. Your suitcase, carry-on, backpack and small purse were left in pile at the front door and you threw your coat on top of it, not being bothered with hanging it up - for now.

You did a quick prayer, hoping your cacti would still be alive after being left to collect dust for two and a half months. Cacti were the only plants that would survive your long trips, and normally you would never be gone for more than 7 weeks, but this time you were pushing it.

“Shit, not Dorian”, you sighed as you looked at the sad little almost brown cactus. Dorian was one of the first cacti you got since living your apartment. You put the little plant in your sink, filled it with a few inches of water and hoped he would revive himself. The other cacti Dante, Daisy & Frank(enstein) (all named after characters from books you read) were looking fine, but you put them with Dorian as well, just to be sure.

“Alright; cacti are watered, suitcase is not unpacked and fridge is-“, you opened your fridge, “empty. Who would have guessed?”

Refilling the fridge would be a chore for another day, you decided. After having showered and drying your hair, you plopped down on the couch with the taco’s you had ordered and you turned on the tv.

“—to be matched to your one true love?”, the interviewer on the news asked a couple, “well you know, I was really nervous before taking the test. I was actually with someone else, but you know, doubts started creeping in. Are they truly who I should be with? So we made a mutual decision to both take the test and then I matched with Yazz. It felt like I had known her for years and we had this instant connection. I’ve never felt like this before.” The interviewer continued talking about the matching service, because apparently everyone wants to find their one true love pronto.

“As you can see, there are many happy couples now. My company ‘The One’ just needs a simple piece of DNA, like a strand of hair, and in our labs. We trace what are called hydrocarbon pheromones and if two of those are the same, we have a match”, Rebecca, the founder explains, “you are genetically guaranteed to fall in love. Don’t you want your fairytale ending, just like me?” she ends her sentence as a man comes on stage and passionately kisses her.

“Alright, when are they gonna stop this bullshit?”, you say as you rolled your eyes and turned on Netflix to search though the catalogue. The marketing department of that company must be working overtime, you thought to yourself as you shoved a taco in your mouth.

The next day you wake up on the couch with an awkward kink in your neck from not using your pillow. You stretch your neck a bit and stand up, ready to start your day of cleaning up the mess you left in front of your door.

A few hours later and everything is tidy again, your fridge is filled and laundry is being washed, even Dorian is looking a little bit better. Your doorbell rang, and you knew exactly who would be behind the door.

“You can come in Sian, I know you’re itching to use that spare key I gave you!” The door immediately opened to Sian, probably your best friend since you left university. “You gave me a key for a reason, I don’t see why I should still knock”, she said while she gave you a hug, “honestly how long did they need you now? I hope they gave you some days off now?”

“Well, I can’t help that an earthquake decided to mess up everything we had already fixed, but it’s good to see you again Si, how are you?”

Sian opened her bag and pulled out some cupcakes, and you put your hands over your heart, as if saying a big thank you and turned on your coffee machine. “Well you know, everything is fine actually. The kids decided that they wanted to do three art projects last month instead of two, so let’s just say that paint was everywhere and the white t-shirt I had on is not white anymore.”

You laughed as you put two coffees on the table and grabbed a cupcake, "you knew what would happen with second graders so don’t complain about it!” You both munched on your cupcakes as you sat in silence. The silence was kind of odd. Usually after you’d be gone for a while you both had tons of stories to tell each other, so what is this?

“Is something wrong Si? Did something happen to your mom or-“, you left the question open, as you were blanking with what could have happened during your time away.

“Well, um, I know you said you would never do it, but I might have done it”, she rambled. “Well, I have absolutely no idea what you’re saying, but it doesn’t sound good”, you quipped. What could she have done now? Honestly it wouldn’t surprise you if she subscribed to a pyramid scheme. One time she even donated money to help an old lady (a 23 year old girl) get a lifesaving surgery (breast implants). So no, you wouldn’t be surprised with whatever she had done now.

“Well, you’ve seen the ads right? Like the soulmate match kinda thing? Well I might have send in a strand of my hair and now I’m waiting for the results”, she put up her hands as if you were holding her at gunpoint, because your eyes were shooting daggers.

“Girl, you know it’s like a big scam right? What if this is the governments way of collecting your data? Don’t come crying to me when your clone is walking around and stealing your money and identity”, you scoffed. Sian rolled her eyes, “well I don’t want to become a bitter old lonely lady, which you are quickly becoming”, she fired back.

“Okay, I know, I’m sorry, but it just sounds too good to be true you know?”, you picked at your fingernail, something you often did when stressed. Sian took your hand in hers, “I know you’re only looking out for me babes, but let’s use me as a test subject? When I get matched and it truly works, you can do one as well”, she squeezed your hand, “don’t worry okay. I’ve dealt with worse things.”

“Second graders are not horrible people Si”, you snickered, “I’ll think about it. But right now, I have a feeling I don’t need it. Maybe when I’m desperately craving some physical affection and when I’m not out of the country for weeks at a time.”

Spencer was sitting in Garcia’s cave as they were taking a break. “Yo, boy genius, what do you think of this DNA matching thing? Does the science check out?”, Garcia curiously asked Spencer. She loved love and if she wasn’t happily together with Kevin she would immediately do the test and find herself a partner.

“Well, it’s really quite interesting. Many studies have been done on animals - insects specifically, so pheromones are chemical signals that have evolved for communication between members of the same species, it’s like some sort of signal. Through evolution, these pheromones have evolved into odorant molecules in some species. Odorant molecules became signal molecules in two main ways. The first way is by developing increasing sensitivity for molecules that initially are simply a reliable cue, for example, to finding a sexually mature female. This may be how goldfish sex pheromones evolved. Hormones control the development of eggs in female goldfish, and some of the hormones leak out of their gills into the water. These hormones, or molecules derived from them, have become female-produced sex pheromones, attracting male goldfish.”

“Okay, Reid, in non-robot terms please, not everyone has a Phd in chemistry”, Garcia hit him with her pen. “Alright so it’s just some kind of smell that insects and mammals smell and they get turned on, that human enough for you?”, he exclaimed with a small blush rising on his cheeks.

“So this also works on humans then?”

“I guess they found a way, which is pretty impressive because for a long time, no one believed it was possible for humans”, Spencer concluded his info-dump.

“So, does that mean you’ll try it, my single doctor? You could find your soulmate!” Garcia was already imagining scenarios in her head that involved magical dates and a fairytale ending for her good friend, who wasn’t particularly lucky in the love department.

“Hmm, I’m going to read up the science first and see if it checks out. You never know what they’ll do with your DNA after all.” He stood up and went back to his own desk, actually thinking about what this might mean for the science community. He had been to a seminar about pheromones in animals before, but in humans it was pretty new.

He was also pretty single at the moment. On every date he had been in the last six months (2 dates), the girl just wasn’t really his type. Sure, they were both beautiful and accomplished people, but he just didn’t feel that connection. It felt as if he was on a trial version and could only say so many things until they looked at him weird and would end the date with a ‘it was so nice to meet you, hope I see you soon!’ As they dashed away without leaving their phone number. This could be the solution - if it worked of course.

If the science checked out, Spencer would gladly be a test subject in the name of love.
