One of the many things I love about the Clark/Lois relationship in Smallville is that it’s a slow burn where we know the ending. The audience is in on the destiny…on the destination...we know the future of them both as individual entities and as one iconic duo while they are blissfully unaware of where they will end up. While they banter, trading snarky remarks, her drawing a wry smile upon her lips and him the widest of grins, while they laugh, cry, hug, her fervor challenged by his steadiness and patience, his still nature rattled by her disarray and persistence, there’s hints, less than subtle nods scattered into the show about their story…about their ending…as if the show is nodding to the audience through this journey, recognizing that the audience knows, recognizing we already know how this duo is remembered, but that we should also be patient and watch as it unfolds…because Clark isn’t the only one discovering himself…they’re both discovering what they mean to each other…and what they’ll mean to each other in the end.

We don’t talk enough about the fact that OG Carter Hall and Daniel Jackson were the same person, and not just the same person but both with very similar backgrounds. If I didn’t tell you that these were from different shows you wouldn’t know.

Starting to think a cooler headcanon for Clark’s upbringing might just be that the entire town of Smallville collectively decided to just go with it and accept that Martha and John's kid has superpowers, but we don't talk about it.
Someone's tractor gets stuck and nothing can get it out? "Be a dear and run down to the Kents, would you? Ask for Clark?"
"Why Clark, we need a machine--"
"Run along now."
Or if he kicks too hard and the football vanishes into the upper stratosphere, no it didn't, we all collectively saw it land over there *vague hand movements*

Lois enters Clark’s life in season four with literal lightning energy, the universe, the heavens, fueling, igniting their first meeting, destiny, fate coded in their relationship from the start. And while in any other show, in any other circumstance, the weighted foreshadowing might be too over the top, in the case of Smallville, in the case of Lois and Clark it works. It works not because there isn’t a little air of exaggeration or bolded underline neon lights working through the script – but because of the performances – the portrayal of two people who are truly meeting for the first time and have no idea of what is in store for them on the road ahead and are oblivious and figuring out the situation. It’s two people working through their dynamic, figuring out what they differ on and what they have in common. It’s eventually growing together and apart, alongside one another and in separate spaces. It’s acquaintances to friends to best friends to romantic interests to partners in life, in every sense of the word, united for the sake of the world and in the face of love.
Lois enters Clark’s life with literal flashing clamoring lightning signaling in the background, and yet they find each other on their own, in their own time, at their own pace.

I tried out Talkville with Michael Rosenbaum and Tom Welling because they got to the Lois Lane seasons.
And boy.
This continues my streak of not liking Rosenbaum as a podcast host, especially since he really doesn’t like Smallville at all.
Tom, while he didn’t enjoy it and was upfront it’s not his genre, he’s a lot more open enjoying the show. And giving his insights about Clark, he also really lights up in the Lois Lane scenes.
Rosenbaum is just done with it, and he can’t even give the show the grace to develop character and storylines. Smallville wasn’t great at it but that doesn’t mean they don’t do it!
Anyway, I appreciate Tom Welling on his insights opinions, especially when he uses insights he gets as a director.
